Speaker 4 (08:27):
Buddy, yeah but he, said you know, what H i'm
going to refuse this opportunity Because i'm very loyal to
McLellan and the fact that he understood his own lack
of military experience and detached part of his core in The.
Sport Major General John Pope's army Of virginia in The
Northern Virginia. Campaign he received telegrams at this time For
Major General FitzJohn porter which were extremely Critical pope's abilities
(08:49):
as a, commander and then he forwarded those letters to.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
His superiors in.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Concurrence this episode later played a significant role In porter's court,
martial Which burnside appeared as a. Witness he again declined
command Following pope's debacle at The Second Ball run like.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
No burnside was then given command of the right wing
of The army of The, potomac which was the First
corps and his own Ninth.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
Court so if you don't want to accept any we're
just Gonna we're.

Gonna give you at least that wing right that was
at the start of The Maryland campaign for The battle
Of South. Mountain bob mccleollan separated the two corps at
The battle Of, antietam placing them on the opposite sides
of The union battle, line then Returning burnside to the
command of just the Ninth. Corps burnside implicitly refused to
give up his authority and acted as though the core
commander Was First Major General.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Jesse, reno who was killed At south, mountain.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
And Then Brigador General Jacob cox finally in orders threw
them to the.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Court so now he doesn't like mcclaugh that.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Well this cumbersome arrangement contributed to his slowness and attacking
and crossing what is now Called Burnside's bridge on the
southern flank of The Union. Line burnside did not perform
an adequate reconsisance of the. Area he did not even
take advantage or several Easy ford insights out of range
of the. Enemy his troops were forced into repeated assaults
(10:07):
across the narrow, bridge which was dominated by rebel shopshooters
on the high. Ground high, noon McClellan was losing. Patience
he sent a succession of couriers to Motivate burnside to
move forward, or in one, aid tell, him if it
costs ten thousand, men he must.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Go now do. Something and this is, McClellan of all,
people saying that.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Right when he further increased the pressure by sending His
Inspector general to Confront, burnside who reacted, indignantly he, says
McLellan appears to THINK i am not trying my best
to carry this.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Bridge you are the third or fourth.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
One it has been to me this morning with similar.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Orders, right, well then do.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
It the Ninth core eventually broke, through but the delay
Allowed Major general Ap Hill's Confederate. Division they came up
From harper's ferry and repulsed The union.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Breakthrough.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
McClellan he Refused burnside's request for, reinforcements and the battle
ended in a tactical.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Stalemate after McClellan failed to Pursue General lee's retreat From,
Antietam lincoln order McClellan's removal on a fifth Of november
eighteen six, two and he Selected burnside to replace. Him
on the seventh Of november eighteen six. Two burnside he,
SAYS i really don't want, to BUT i will obey this,
order the third such order in his brief. Career he
(11:16):
only did this in part because the courier told him
that if he, refused the command would go instead To
Major General Joseph, hooker Who burnside.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
Despised he's, like, oh hell, no.
Speaker 4 (11:25):

a change of command ceremony at the farm Of Julia.
Claggett in the clampits, right the, clampits The claggett's the
farm Of Julia claggett In New, Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
VIRGINIA i didn't know they had ceremonies to turn over,
command but all, right, Well i'm McCall and visited troops
to bid them. Farewell Columbia, Claggett julia's daughter in, law
testified after the war that a parade didn't transfer the

At New, Baltimore virginia ninth Of november eighteen sixty.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
Two fantastic oh.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Abe he Pressured.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Burnside to take aggressive, action and then he approved his
plan On november fourteenth to capture The confederate capital At.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Richmond little too soon for that, money.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
Right this plan led to a humiliating and Costly Blue
coat defeat at The battle Of Frederick byergun in Thirteenth
december eighteen sixty. Two his advance Upon fredericksberger was, rapid
but the attack was delayed when the engineers were slow
to marshall pound tooon bridges for the crossing at The,
rappahannock as well as his own reluctance to deploy portions
of his army across fording. Points this Allowed Old generally
(12:33):
to Concentrate Long Mary's heights just west of town and
easily repulsed The Old Blue coats attack him.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Easily assault south to town were also, mismanaged which were
supposed to be the main avenue of the, attack and
Initial union breakthroughs were. Unsupported burnside was upset by the
failure of his plan and by the enormous casualties of
his repeated feudal frontal, assaults and declared that he would
personally lead an assault by The Ninth. Corp his core
commanders talk him, out but relations were strained between the
(13:02):
general and.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
His subordinates except in full. Blame he offered to retire
from THE Us.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Army it's just a squitter, retirement but this was refuse
obviously all. Right burnside's detractors labeled him The butcher Of.
Fredericksburg oh, no, where let's assess scrink gets labeled that as.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Well.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Right In january of eighteen sixty, Three burnside launched a
second offensive Against, lee but it bogged down and winter
rains before anything was even, accomplished and has derisively been
called the Mud march Mud march in its. Wake he
asked that several openly insupporting offers be relieved a duty
And corn, Martialed and then again he offered to resign all.
(13:43):
Right lincoln quickly accepted the latter, option And i'm twenty
sixth Of. January he Replaced burnside With Major General Joseph
hoogan Oh, geez one of the officers who had conspired against.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
HIM.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Bm burnside offered to resign his commission, altogether But lincoln
declined stayed.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
In there could still be a place for him in the.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
Army, right let, go, nobody mufu.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Dust he was placed back at the head of the
Ninth corner and sent to commanded The department Of, ohio
which encompassed the states Of, Ohio, Indiana, kentucky And.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
Illinois, yeah it's very better for.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
You this was a quiet little area with little, activity
and The president reason That burnside could not get himself
into too much trouble over.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
There.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Well, however anti war sentiment was riding high in The western,
states as they had traditionally carried on a great deal
of commerce with The, south and there was very very
little in the way of an abolitionist sentiment or the
desire to fight for the purpose of ending. Slavery they're,
like we don't even, care, man you, know we just
want to. Trade we don't even consider ourselves a part
(14:38):
of you freaking Weird. Easterners we just want to be out, here,
man and get support from the federal government when we.
Needed burnside was thoroughly disturbed by this trend initiate a
series of orders forbidding the expression of public sentiments against
the war or the administration in his Department Communists Mother.
(15:00):
Right this finally climax With General Order number thirty, eight
which declared that any person found guilty of treason will
be tried by military tribunal and either imprisoned or banished
to enemy lines whatever.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Than being, killed like treason usually.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Is may eighteen sixty, Three Ohio Congressman clement Val Digham Valen,
dingham a prominent opponent of the. War he held a
large public rally In Mount, Vernon, ohio in which he
didn't Ounce President lincoln as a tyrant who sought to
abolish The constitution and set up a.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Dictatorship chees.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Whoever heard this Before burnside had dispatched several agents to the,
rally who took down notes and brought back their evidence
to The, general who then declared that it was sufficient
grounds to Arrest Valan.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
And that's not trees and it's free. Speech.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
Wow a military court they tried him found him guilty
of Violating General order Number General, order despite his protests
that he was expressing his opinions. Publicly Uh Valaln dingham
was sentenced to imprison for duration of the, war and
he was turned into a martyr by anti war. Democrats.
Interesting burnside next turned his attention To. Illinois whether The
(16:12):
Chicago times newspaper had been printed had been printing anti
war editorials for?
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Months what's going on? Here who?
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Cares The general dispatched a squadron of troops to the
paper's offices in order them to cease.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Printing what is, This charlie?
Speaker 5 (16:25):
Hebdo holy?
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Shit, Well lincoln had not been asked or informed about
Either Valen dingham's arrest or the closure of The Chicago.
Times he remembered the section of The General order number
thirty eight which declared that offenders would be banished to enemy,
lines and finally decided that it was a good. Idea
So Valen dingham was freed from jail and sent over
to The.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Confederates.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
Cool bad.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Mistake he tri trying to overthrow the.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Country, Meanwhile lincoln ordered The Chicago times to be reopened
and announced That burnside had exceeded his authority in both.
Speaker 5 (16:52):
Cases, yeah that's.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
True The president then issued a warning that generals were
not to arrest civilians or closed down newspapers again without
The White house.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Permission, right, cow what are you doing OVER.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Yea burnside also dealt With confederate, raiders so that Says
John Hunt. Morgan in The knoxville, Campaign burnside advanced In, Knoxville,
tennessee first bypassing the old rebel Held Cumberland gap and
ultimately Occupying knoxville un.
Speaker 5 (17:19):
The post he just walked in and was, like, oh
that was.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Easy he then he then sent troops back to The
Cumberland Gap confederate, Commander Brigadier General John. Fraser he refused
to surrender in the face of Two union, brigades But
burnside arrived with the, third forcing in the surrender and
his two only three Hundred confederate soldiers.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Two union Major General William.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Rosecrans he was defeated at The battle Of, chickamauga and
Then burnside was pursued By Lieutenant James, longstreet against whose
troops he had battled At Mary's. Heights burnside skillfully out
maneuvered Long street at The battle Of Campbell station and
was able to reach his entrenchments in safety In, knoxville
where his pre fleet besieged until The confederate defeat at
(18:04):
The battle Of Fort sanders outside the.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
City, yeah that's.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Terrible tying Down longstreet's corps At knoxville contributed To General
bracks And braggs defeat By ulyss Assessed grant At chattanooga
troops Under Major General WILLIAM. T. Sherman he marched To burnside's,
aid but the siege had already been. Lifted, longstreet he,
Said i'm going back To, virginia but he ain't worth.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
It, yes it's crazy.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
Try burnside was in order to take The Ninth corps
back to The Eastern, theater where he built it up
to a strength of over twenty one thousand men In, Annapolis.
Maryland The Ninth corps fought in The Overland campaign Of
may of eighteen sixty, four but they fought as an independent,
command reporting initially to. Grant this corps was now even
assigned to The army Of potomac Because burnside outranked his,
(18:45):
Commander Major General george Meado, oh who had been a
division commander Under burnside At. Fredericksburg this converersome arrangement was
erectified on twenty Fourth may eighteen sixty, four just before
The Battle North, anna When burnside agreed to waifest presidents
of rank and was placed Under mead's direct.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Command he then fought at the battles Of wilderness And Spotsylvania,
courthouse where he did not perform in a distinguished, manner
attacking piecemeal and appearing reluctant to commit his troops to
the costly front assaults that characterized these. Battles After North
An End Cold, harbor he then took his place in
the siege lines At. Petersburg he, said, well nestled down right.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Here.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Wow as the two armies faced the stalemate of trench
warfare At petersburg In july of eighteen sixty, Four burnside
agreed to a plan suggested by a regiment of formal
coal miners in his, core the forty Eighth. Pennsylvania he's,
like why don't we dig a mine under fort Named
Elliott salient in the old rebel. Entrenchments we'll ignite it
where that we'll ignite it and we'll achieve a surprise.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Breakthrough i'll tell you. What they don't even see us.
Coming burnside was like all, right all. Right burnside was like.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
Okay so the fort was destroyed on the third Of
july and what is known as The battle of The
crater where everybody went into the crater and got plunked in.
Lookinhead basically because of interference From, Mead burnside was ordered
only hours before the infantry attack not to use his
division Of black, troops which have been specially trained for the,
assault and said he was forced to use untrained white.
(20:14):
Troops he could not decide which division to choose his,
replacement so he had his three subordinate commanders draw.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Lots so who's gonna get slaughtered? Today?
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Boys oh?
Speaker 4 (20:23):
