Speaker 1 (00:06):
We're now let's do the Bison Bits with TJ. Jeff.
Good morning, good afternoon, good evening. No matter where you
are and when you're listening to this, thank you for
tuning in. I'm TJ. Bison Bits and we're moving along.
(00:27):
It's good to have you with me tonight. And boy,
oh boy, if you live in the Dakotas or Minnesota,
it's been chilly, has it not? Boy? At least where
I am, it was in the low forties and I
think it might even hit upper thirties this tomorrow morning,
(00:50):
which should be Thursday morning. So it's been cold, cold, cold,
But I guess it's getting to be football season, so
it's par for the course. That's the way it has
to be. The NFL is kicking off with the Cowboys
at the Eagles. This would be Thursday night. I'm excited
(01:12):
about that, so the football season is going to be
well underway. I'm also excited about my Vikings, who will
be in Chicago to take on dub Bears. The Bears
are a three and a half point favorites. If I
understand that right, I'm not really sure. I'm not sure
why the Bears are a three and a half point favorite,
(01:35):
but they are so the Vikings don't play very well
on Monday night on the road, so that could be
part of it. And JJ McCarthy, you have a rookie quarterback,
well rookie enough, so I get it. But I'm looking
forward to that. That should be a good game. Football's here.
(01:56):
Let's hope the Vikings can play well on the road
on Monday night football. But I know a team that
played well on the road on Saturday and that's our
NDSU Bison thirty eight. Nothing over the Citadel and beautiful Charleston,
South Carolina, and it sounds like the local media fans
(02:17):
had a great experience. It is amazing how certain people
didn't that work for the local newspaper did not know
how beautiful Charleston was. Not everyone even understood the Civil
War history behind Charleston's key city in the Civil War.
(02:38):
Beautiful city, great history. I believe it's been around since
the mid sixteen hundred. So for those of you that
had the opportunity to go to Charleston, I'm so thrilled
you had a great time. You should have a great
time in Tennessee because it's Nashville. It's party central, baby.
After Vegas. It's got to be Nashville for party Central,
and the Bison will be there to take Tennessee State.
(03:00):
But let's read, let's take a step back. Let's relive
a little bit with the Citadel. The Bison go in there,
it rained. Something they weren't expecting was the rain, and
it rained, and it made problems, did it not? Bison
struggled a little bit out of the gate. I said
(03:21):
last week that I don't expect the Bison to come
out real sharp. I think it's going to take a
few drives for them to get their poop in a
group and get it in a rhythm. And I was right,
but for different reasons. I didn't realize the rain was
gonna come like it did. I don't think anybody did.
It didn't seem to be forecasting that heavy, but it did.
(03:42):
And Cole Payton slipped and fell a couple of times.
He threw a ball to I forgot even who it was,
and it floated, it got dropped. As a matter of fact,
Cole's very first pass almost got picked. That was to
Bryce Lance on a little out and that almost got picked.
And so that was a that was a little bit
(04:06):
of a different set up there didn't go very well.
Took a while, but the defense really stepped up, even
though Logan Cob dropped a potential interception, but the rain recaboc.
There was a lot of slipping and sliding with the ball.
It wasn't great, but once the rain quit and the
Bison had a little bit of a dry ball to
(04:26):
work with, they started clicking. And there's some great stats
in this game. Nothing eye popping, but wonderful stats. And
the thing that really sticks out to me is the
Bison threw for two hundred and sixty three yards and
rushed for two hundred and fifty six yards. If you're
a football coach and you see that kind of even stats,
(04:47):
you have to be smiling from ear to ear because
that's about as great a balance as you could ask
for out of your football team. Cole Payton led the
way eleven to seventeen for and a touchdown, and like
I said, once the rain ended and things dried up,
he threw the ball with much more authority, played really well.
(05:09):
He rushed eleven times for one hundred and one yards.
Rika Penu twelve carries for seventy nine that's six point
six yards of pop in two touchdowns. DJ Scott, we
were wondering how he was gonna be the James Madison
transfer ten for forty three in a touchdown. And when
he gets hit. When DJ Scott gets hit, he falls forward.
(05:30):
It's really refreshing to see. He rarely gets knocked backwards.
And then you had some of the reserves come in.
Courteil the Grant came in, got a few carries, Miles Mitchell,
who people are high on him. Miles Mitchell's for four
carries for four yards didn't do much. And then you
had Trey Drake, Owen Johnson got a couple carries, Bryce
Lance got a carry, and Nathaniel Hayes, backup quarterback got
(05:55):
in there in the third quarter was five for five
for seventy one yards and a touchdown. And he just
rolls such an awesome rocket for a football. And he
threw his to Isaiah Saint Romain, a North Dakota boy,
and his one and only catch of the game was
a touchdown. What a great job by Hayes. And I
thought the Bison would probably throw for maybe one hundred
(06:17):
and nine yards but rush for maybe three four hundred yards.
But because they brought in some of those reserves Hayes
at quarterback. They still threw the ball. They still needed
to see what they had, and I think the can
feel really good about the fact. Even though Hayes did
get some playing time last year. He's fairly green, but
he's got so many good skills. He is unbelievable. It's
(06:38):
good to watch him, and he's got a lot more
to learn. Rajah Nelson from the receiving end two for
sixty with a beautiful catch late in the first half.
Chris Harris had three carries for thirty six, and I
think that's who I was referring to. I think it
was Chris Harris that dropped that pass. It was a floater,
but the ball was so wet. Bryce Lance four for
(06:58):
thirty four. Even up the ball in zone coverage, you
kind of nestle up in a near the seam and
drop the pass. The Kay Collins had one for twenty,
Rika Kemp who had one for twenty. DJ Scott had
to catch, Logan Conklin had to catch. They spread the
ball out. That's one thing I always love about this
team is though they might have a receiver with a
(07:21):
really big game, they still get the ball distributed to
their tight ends, to their running backs, to other wide receivers.
It's so great to see. It is just unbelievable to see.
Reese Kessel the tight end, young tight end had a
great catch one for thirty one, and the offense loosened
up after a nice play. I'm trying to remember who
(07:42):
it was. I think it was the Rajah Nelson on
a rollout to the left after the rain stopped, and
that really got everybody loosened up. Cole got loosened up,
the offense started to click, they got in time, and
that was brought up in the press conference by the
Bison coaching staff. Now, that was brought up, and I
thought that was an important factor that they realized. With
(08:04):
the rain, it was. It was a trouble. It was trouble,
but once it quit, things got rolling. And I think
I really think that the coaching staff, I think overall
is I think overall they were happy. It's hard to
gauge in a team like in a team like the Citadel,
(08:25):
and that was brought up. That was brought up by
coach polisek. Hey, it's a team that's still trying to build,
trying to grow. But I think what was impressive. Is
I told you last week that they had a really
good defensive front. It's some really good defensive linemen, some
really good cornerbacks, and they were they were big boys.
They could push, they could get leveraged. They did a
(08:46):
nice job of some good man the man coverage. Coach
Polisek was not happy with the pad level on both
sides of the ball, meaning that he thought they got
up too soon and got on top of their opponent's
pads when the important thing is to get under the pads.
When we get under the pants to control, especially offensively,
the control that defensive lineman or that the linebacker. You
(09:07):
got to get under the pads. He thought some of
those things need to get cleaned up. And he was
happy with Cole Payton overall, other than a run late
in the I think it was the first half where
Cole took off, went to his checkdowns one progression, two progression,
three progression, nobody go and the offensive line gave him
plenty of time. He took off and he hurtled the
(09:28):
guy and I think he actually scored, but they marked
him at about the one, just inside the one, and
that was something that coach Polosek was not happy. You know,
we can't have that. We can't be hurtling guys understanding
it's competitive, but the Bison had control of the game
at that time, it wasn't necessary. He doesn't want to
(09:49):
see his quarterback get hurt, so he wants to talk
to him about understanding when to do those things when
the time is right. I get it, I get it.
You don't want to get hurt early because you played
so so well. For what it's worth, some team stats.
Take a peek here. Some team stats that should come
(10:10):
up there. The Bison that twenty five first downs, Citadel
had eight. Bison were seven to twelve on third down,
not too shabby. The Citadel two of twelve. The Citadel
really struggled. And I'll get to some stats there. Individually,
fourth down Citadel was one of two the Bison of
one and one total yards. The Bison racked up five
hundred and nineteen yards to the Citadel's one twenty six
(10:30):
in the time of possession thirty six minutes and three
seconds for NDSU, twenty three fifty seven for the Citadel.
I said, look out for the BYU or not the BYU.
I'm sorry. The Air Force grad Quinton Hayes he was in.
He was one of three for fourteen yards. Passing. Colby
Tompkins did some rotating. I thought they'd run three quarterbacks.
(10:53):
The only ran two, Kobe Tompkins one of three for
eight yards. They were two six for twenty two yards
passing carries for one hundred and four yards. That's two
and a half yards per game compared to the Bison,
who ran forty seven times or two fifty six five
point four yards. So the kind of domination you expect,
Endeus you would have they did. In some answers questions
(11:18):
have been answered, one being yes, Colepayne can throw the
football if I'm a batman, I think what they'd like
to see. And because they had to use reserves, they
didn't get a chance to grind out that fourth quarter.
But I think in the fourth quarter Pennu only had
one more carry than Cole Payton in the fourth quarter.
I think in a game that has meaning to it,
(11:40):
where maybe you're not going to run so many reserves,
I do believe you're going to see Pennu in that
fourth quarter get more carries because I'd never seen him
run so hard. I've never seen Brica run so hard.
I think in the fourth quarter, Coach Poulsis looking for
that fourth quarter running back that can take the ball
grind out yards, and I think I think you're gonna
(12:01):
see more carries out of Pendue. But we'll see what
this week holds in the great State of Tennessee as
we now look forward to Tennessee's state. They won twenty
four to twenty one against North Carolina A and T.
Jonathan Palmer is their quarterback. He was eleven to twenty
one for only one hundred and twenty three yards, a
touchdown and a pick. They ran the ball thirty times
(12:23):
for one hundred and twenty nine yards, led by Kendrick
Rimes with twenty one carries for one hundred and seventy
four and going back to Jonathan Palmer the quarterback with
one hundred and twenty three yards, he threw one hundred
and two of them to Devin Slaughter four for one
oh two. So that's something that's a good connection. That's
something North Dakota State I'm sure we'll be aware of.
(12:43):
They only gave up two hundred and ten yards in
the air to North Carolina A and T. They gave
up three point two yards of carry forty one, carries
North Carolina A and t for one thirty three. So
this is not the same Anie George team we had
last year at George, I believe is in Bowling Green.
You have a whole new coaching staff. But one thing
(13:05):
of note, if you know me being a Viking fan,
the O nine year five NFC title game, Greg Williams
was the Saints defensive coordinator. He is also defensive coordinator
for Tennessee State. So let's see how hard Tennessee State hits.
Let's see how far they pushed that envelope of fair play.
(13:28):
I'm curious about that. Greg Williams does not have a
great reputation. Tennessee State was fairly efficient, well not really.
They are only two of eleven on third down, so
this team has got some question marks. Penalties. They had
eight for sixty eight, and that's something that Politics said
of his own team. Too many penalties, Too many penalties.
(13:52):
We can't have these penalties. And a lot of them
were false starts. A lot of them were early in
the game, which can be natural first game jitters, et cetera.
But that doesn't fly with North Dakota State. So I
think that's something that's that they're going to clean up,
because you can't win when you're going backwards, and I
(14:12):
think that'll be that'll be something they'll clean up as well.
But it'll be entering interesting to see how that plays out,
I expect. And I'm going to check the weather because
the weather was nothing, nothing to get too worried about
once to quit raining in Charleston. And I'm going to
get a long term forecast for Nashville, which I did
(14:33):
not do. So the forecast in Nashville ten day Saturday,
wahaw right now as we speak, high at sixty four,
chance of rain. Northwest wins at eleven. So that's really good.
(14:56):
And the issue is going to go into Nashville with
probably even more I would assume there's gonna be more
fans there. They're a little bit closer. Nashville. I think
it's expensive, but I think it's a little cheaper flight wise.
It might be a little cheaper than Charleston. I was
told Charleston, and I did look at hotels and flights,
and the hotels, god, the hotel total may have been
(15:19):
more than the flight. So Charleston's a little expensive. Nashville
is not cheap, but it's cheaper than Charleston, so the
buys are gonna travel well. The weather's gonna be great
in Nashville at least currently what I'm seeing with the
weather forecast, and what do I expect out of this game?
I expect a more run heavy, get Penu going, get
(15:43):
that offensive line more solidified. Because something of interest. Griffin Empi,
who played center at one point in the game, went
out the left tackle and that completely blew our good
buddy dom is a way nobody saw that. The media
had not seen that in practice, and people weren't quite
sure what was going on. Lewinskey ended up playing some
(16:04):
at left guard, stepping in and replacing replacing the starter
there at left guard. So I thought that was that
was really interesting and played very well, by the way,
played very very very well. And so yeah, you had
(16:25):
some switching around on that offensive line. But Empty going
to left going out to the left left tackle was
quite fascinating, I thought anyway, and it seemed like everyone
was quite surprised by it. So Donovan Wallen played really well.
You really couldn't complain too much about the way he played,
(16:48):
and so I'm sorry, was it? Yeah, Griffin Empty went
from Yeah, a little bit of center went out to
that left guard. Lewinsky went into the went into left guard.
So it was really cool that they they did what
they did. Meganan played great at the right tackle. I
thought he was really really solid. Bo Johnson he started there,
(17:10):
the red shirt freshman at left tackle. We had that
offensive line right. But they did some switching and I
said that that might happen. That was been brought up
that it's gonna be a few games before they get
some things figured out. They move some people around and
and it was it was empty the left. The empy
was the guard that went over to left tackle. Trent
(17:32):
Freeley was still have center played well. I thought the
offensive line played great. They really kept Cole Payton clean.
Tennessee State with Greg Williams as the defensive coordinator will
blitz They will bring blitzes from all over and they
will get after it. So the clock and Cole's head's
gonna have to speed up a little bit. He's gonna
have to learn to get that ball out. But we
(17:53):
saw what he could do. He's you know, he doesn't
have the quickest release, but in that zone when they
they'll play zone, it was amazing. He could just zip
it right in the spots. I mean, BOO one, two three,
backfoot gets planted, that left foot gets planted, and the
balls out and he could get it into the holes
in the zone with very little effort. And that's going
(18:14):
to probably have to happen. The listens are going to
get dialed up. Greg Williams is going to come after
you and hit and hit and hit and try to
wear you down and make you start working towards your
weaknesses by taking away his strength. And I know the Bison,
I know the Bison staff is going to be used
to that. I know they're ready for that. So I'm
(18:40):
sure they're studying it as we we speak. It's nothing
they don't already know, so I'm pretty confident of that. So,
Dan Larson, your first game as a new offensive coordinator,
you were a great man. You did a good job.
I'm sure loved to see. I'd sure love to see
(19:02):
more from under center. But they did run a little power.
They ran the old I formation, which which is great
to see. I watched the local Wday broadcast, but I
went to YouTube later in the day and picked up
the highlights from the ESPN Plus, which I believe is
a Citadel broadcasters, and they were just loving the fact
(19:24):
that Bison old lineup under the old school I formation
and when the Bisons start doing that, and if they
can run, if they choose to lineup under the eye
old school and they can get some yards that way
off that Greg Williams defense, it's going to be a big,
big thing for them. But they're gonna have a bigger challenge,
a much bigger challenge than they did last week at
(19:47):
the Citadel for Tennessee State. In many ways, it's not
a home game technically, but it's a home game. It's
in their home state, and so they're going to have
a good turnout. They should have a lot of excited fans,
should be a lot good Bison fans, and watch the
Bison try to establish to run a little more and
then watch them run that off the play action. You're
(20:09):
gonna see typical Bison football. Not much is gonna change defensively,
I don't know what more you can ask from the Bison.
Last week. They played wonderful football. Citadel quarterbacks were swarmed
the whole game. The Bison rarely had the blitz. I
think they blitzed just to see what it looked like
(20:31):
in a live game. They bottled up the Citadel quarterbacks,
but I don't see that happening. I don't think it's
going to be that. It might not be that easy
this week, so they're gonna have a different quarterback. Jonathan
Palmer did run three times for minus seven yards. I
don't know how much of a threat he is there,
but he can throw the ball a little bit, so offensively,
(20:53):
I don't know. They did put up twenty four points
on North Carolina A and T, but that might not
be saying much. But you're gonna watch that defense. I
think you're gonna see some good fundamental defense, and they're
going to take their shots to blitz trying to get
Tennessee State in those situations where they're going to have
to throw the defense right now, man, they were good
(21:17):
other than a couple runs of about ten or twelve
yards later or early I should say early in the
fourth quarter, but that was with a lot of reserves,
and then the Bison said the hell with that, and
they put their starters back in and shut down the
Citadel on fourth and goal at the three. So I
think you're still going to see the same thing that
defense is so solid. There's so many good players on defense.
(21:39):
I just can't get over how well defensively, and they
were calling names that I never even I never even
heard of that they were going deep into the well
with their defense. They got a lot of great guys
that they got to play, and I think that's just
(22:00):
I think that's awesome. I think that's exactly what it's
about for those younger kids. One of the secrets of
Bison football is they have they can get leads where
they can run some of these younger kids out there,
and I think that is so important. I think that's
so valuable that they get to do that. And one
(22:22):
kid who blew things up was Elijah Wayne six four
two seventy three. He's got the arms and legs of
a much more mature player. His first game in college
true freshman. Now, remember Elijah Wayne signed with SDSU and
then pulled out before signing day and went to North
(22:44):
Dakota State and he paid dividends right away. Amazing to
see what Elijah Wayne did, it was so it was amazing.
Great job his first game, the scouting report, from the
scotting report, from the Bison themselves, as he got a
(23:05):
little too high. His pad level is high. They want
to get him lower so he can really push forward.
But other than that, he played great. Kelton McCastle and
played really really well too. He's flying all over the
ball and everything you hear about the Bison defensive linebackers,
oh boy, it's true. The linebackers played so so well,
(23:28):
and I'm going to try to look up some of that.
I can find some stats. But they played really well.
Linebackers were solid the whole the whole, the whole day.
So it was great to watch. The Wooten played well,
com played well. Everyone just played a solid, solid game.
(23:49):
And so they're gonna have to bring that next week
or at least, i'm sorry, at least this Saturday. They're
gona have to bring that this Saturday and get there,
get ready to go, because it's going to be it's
going to be a I think it's gonna be a
tougher match, a tougher game, I really do. I think
it's gonna be a little bit tougher. Tennessee State's not
(24:09):
gonna lay down for anybody, and we'll see, we'll see
what happens there. But the guys will be ready. I
think they'll be ready. I'm excited for them to be ready.
I think you can see good turnout and the Buys
are going to try to go to and er so
Bison run the football, that linebacking and that that just
(24:30):
a whole defensive unit for ENDIUSU is gonna have to
play the same kind of defense they played and no
turnovers and cut down on the airs the penalties, and
I think you're gonna get another buys and win. My prediction,
my prediction for Byson football, that's a good one. I
have it thirty four to seventeen. NDSU thirty four to seventeen.
(24:54):
We'll see how they improve and we'll go from there.
And by the way, if you watched any FCS football,
to end the show here, if you watched last weekend,
STSU had no problems with Sacramento State. Sacramento States all
smoking mirrors right now, in my opinion, all smoking mirrors
in the India. STSU win like twenty to three. It
(25:18):
was three to three after the first quarter. It's all
smoking mirrors from Sacramento State. They fell in the polls
USD was USD didn't even try. Iowa State took it
to the woodshed, with them early, and I don't know
what University of South Dakota was doing. The Kyles looked terrible,
look confused on offense, could not tackle on defense, got
(25:39):
shoved around on defense really ugly. And you and D whoa.
I'm a big Chris Climbon fan, and he cannot be
happy with his Kansas State team because you and D
had that game won within two minutes and Climbing's team
pulled it out. I don't know what if Case State
(26:00):
it's not that good. I think that's probably more they're
not that good than you indeed being that good. But
time will tell. But you indeed, they moved up in
the polls because of it. In Montana State was blown
out by Oregon the number I think Oregon was number
eight or number five or something like that in the country,
top ten. And that game was over after the first quarter.
(26:22):
So the Bison got their chin up. They're number one
in the nation. And after that game against Tennessee State,
we'll take a look at it. And I appreciate you listening.
I love to ramble. I love the Bison. Until next week,
take good care of yourself and each other. Bye bye,
