The Minnesota Twins got off to a bad start last week, putting Ober on the IL, and struggled with Miami. But the bright side is that they started to turn it around with the Rays, and Buxton is now an All Star! That and more with our man Ted Schwerzler from Minnesota Sports Fan.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Ted Switzler back with another Ted Talks Twins at tlswhares
on Twitter, Minnesota sportsfan dot com. It was a lot
of I guess up and down for the Twins this week,
but they didn't really play to the expectations of their opponent.
I guess Miami is one of the worst teams in baseball,

(00:35):
but did come in to that series with a I
believe it was a seven game winning streak. They knocked
off the Twins in that first game and held them
to no runs. Minnesota won a one run game in
Game two, and then scored just a single run again
in the third game while dropping that and the series.
Miami held them to just three runs over the course

(00:58):
of that three game series. It's been an go of
it right now or lately for the offense. The pitching
as bad and uncertain as it's been without Pablo Lopez,
without Debbie Matthews. Now without Bailey Obert, it's held its
own and the offense has just kind of struggled to

(01:18):
put it together. They did win two of three then
coming home against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are a
good team above five hundred competitive within that wild card area,
the Twins finally decided to put Bailey ober on the shelf.
He'd given them reasons to believe all of June that
he was hurt and not pitching well. He had mentioned

(01:41):
hip discomfort, and the Twins continued to just suggest that
he was going to work through it mechanically. There's some
of that that I guess makes sense, but multiple I
believe he made five or six starts during the month
of June and just continued to get lit up. He
gave up fourteen homers in June, tying b I Loven's
team record. It's just not a good place for him

(02:05):
right now, and it's questionable to see what he comes
back looking like. Is this something that can be fixed
in the short term. Is it something that's going to
require a lengthy i El stint. I'm not sure how
any of that looks, just because they did continue to
run him out there so often he'll for sure be

(02:26):
out through the All Star Break and could be out
I guess through the month of July. That puts the
Twins rotation in a weird spot. They did call up
Trevis Adams, who made his major league debut on Saturday,
being used as an opener or with an opener, being
used as the bulk guy. The slat or the box

(02:48):
score wasn't as pretty as he pitched by no means
was he lights out, but he wasn't five runs bad.
He was close to getting out of a couple innings.
Got that first. I guess exposure under his belt and
he'll get you more turns the rest of the month. Here.
The Twins also, I believe it was this last week

(03:09):
DFA Jonah Bride brought back royce Lewis, who I believe
has hits in all or maybe one short of his
games that he's been active since returning, so the lineup
could get going here. They have Chicago and Pittsburgh this
week prior to the All Star Break. Chicago is one

(03:33):
of the better teams in baseball, whereas Pittsburgh obviously is not.
It's gonna be a tough stretch for the Twins. They
really need to get back to and even above five
hundred before the end of the month if they think
that they're going to either be buyers at the deadline
or even close to competitive for a wild card run

(03:54):
or a postseason run. Right now, I believe they're five
games back in the wild card race, but there's also
six or seven teams ahead of them, so they've dug
themselves quite an ugly hole. Notably, I guess for individual performances.
So next week, with the All Star break, Byron Buxton
will be the lone All Star for the Twins. I'm

(04:15):
kind of hoping that Joe Ryan does find a way
to get in as a replacement for someone that makes
a start over the next couple of days. Joe Ryan
has been great all season. He's got the eighth highest
F four among American League starters, so there's really no
reason for him not to be there. I get that,
you know, bringing a bad team bringing two starters or

(04:39):
two players is tough, but he could have been in
over Brian Wu of Seattle and a couple other questionable selections.
The Twins also will have Byron Buckston competing in the
home run Derby that was just announced on Monday afternoon.
That'll be exciting. He becomes the first twin to participate
in the derby since Miguel Sino in twenty seventeen. And

(05:03):
then over the weekend against Pittsburgh. It looks like Saturday's
matchups should be Joe Ryan and Paul Skian, so that
would be an exciting matchup as well. To check out
at target Field. We will catch back up next week.
