It is another episode of Behind KentuckyBaseball and we're brought to you by Assured
Partners, proud to offer Frankenmuth insurance. Start a Frank conversation today at www
dot Assured Partners dot com. DarrenHedrick alongside my co host Darren Williams,
you all know him as Dub.We got a special guest with us this
week. I know it's a moretechnical term, but head equipment manager,
(00:22):
the athletic team coordinator of apparel, something like that. Jeffrey pools with us
and Jeff, have you ever seenthe show behind or Between two Ferns or
anything like that, because this isway more serious than that. Okay,
we'll make sure to keep all thejokes to a minimum. Right always always,
but also team therapist right vibes,Yeah, TikTok creator here a couple
(00:48):
of times. So we'll dive intoall the stuff that Jeff is involved with
because he is huge behind the scenesand that's why we wanted him on the
show. But first, guys, let's kind of recap Kentucky's coming off a
two to one series win over Missourion the road, first time they've won
a series at Missouri since twenty seventeen. But bigger picture, only one of
three SEC teams right now with Arkansasand Florida that have been able to win
(01:11):
a series in league play on theroad, dub that was a significant Even
though Missouri is struggling this year, they've got a new coach, they're rebuilding
their program. That's a significant serieswin to start off for Kentucky. You
definitely can't apologize to anyone for winninga series on the road in this league,
Like it's almost impossible, Like onlythree teams have done it so far.
And I was watching that Florida LSUseries, keep them eye on that
(01:33):
all weekend, and like that wasa really hard series for Florida to go
win. Like, these road atmospheresare tough. I know Missouri was freezing
cold and windy all week. Jeff, you it had its own atmosphere,
be honest. Yeah, Like it'stough to go in there and win and
create your own energy. And ourour guys did a great job of it
and we gotta do it again thisweek too, So that's right in Old
miss It's gonna be a great atmosphere. We all know about Swayze Field.
(01:56):
They throw the beverages in the airwhen they score and all that fun stuff.
But Jeff, you were out there, what I guess kind of stood
out with the way Kentucky was reallyjust able to grind out a series win.
Yeah, it's just kind of whatyou guys were saying. It's a
different environment and being on the roadin the sec from me being with the
team for so long now, everyplace has its niche and to me,
(02:17):
Missouri is the weather because you don'tknow what to expect of. I mean,
well, you know it's gonna becold, windy and all that.
The sun hardly ever shines there. But just for the guys to go into
an environment that's just a lot differentthan what we're used to hear, different
field to play, obviously, likewe said, the wind, for them
(02:39):
to just kind of they took acouple of shots, regrouped and fought it
out. I mean, obviously wedropped the Saturday game, but even in
that game, I mean, thepitching was phenomenal. Yeah, you hate
that you couldn't get the run support. But overall, I mean, like
you said, it's a win onthe road. It's tough to do in
this league. And yeah, justthe way the guys fought all weekend.
(03:00):
They didn't back down from Missouri. They didn't even when they we might have
got down by one run or two. They just battled back and did what
they needed to do. I thought, even in the loss, like you
look at the loss as such abig negative, but Dom was unbelievable.
Oh efficient, Like he had eightysome pitches for seven innings, Like that
was textbooks. I want to sayhis his like pitch quality, strike percentage
(03:21):
was like ninety two nine, amazing. He was unbelievable. It was a
really fun game to watch. Listento a little part of it. You
did great there up there talking talkingto yourself in that closet, Yeah,
little booth. Yeah, but itwas great to see. I think you're
seeing it from different people, Likeobviously help the team win. It's tough
to win fourteen plus sec games ifyou have like two really dominant pitchers doing
(03:47):
all the heavy lifting. It wasa whole team effort this week. Offense
obviously had a breakout inning there andextras on Friday night, and pitching was
great all weekend. I thought itwas also big for this team going forward
that they found away in a gamewhere it was almost like you can feel
the pressure on the you win Sundaybecause you need to win that series.
Mason didn't have his best stuff, gave up four runs, and you still
(04:09):
found a way to back him upand win that game. That's big when
you've got a guy that doesn't havehis best stuff, give you five innings,
keep you in the ballgame, andthen the offense gets the win.
It didn't matter, Like you're notgonna have your best It's not gonna be
all sunshine and rain by Yeah,in this league, it's just not you're
gonna have a day. Had agreat season last year, I had a
(04:30):
bad day or two like as partof it. Right, Okay, Mason
had a bad day, as youcan say, and it was a five
innings, four runs, kept usin the ball game and helped us win.
If he implodes in three innings, gives up six or seven, it's
a totally different, right, that'sa that's a real bad day. Yeah,
you can overcome one run once youget the five or six. Like
we've seen the opponents for Kentucky. It's Mason. Mason got punched in the
(04:54):
face and battled through. I thoughthe handled it great. I thought it
was You're not gonna have a plusoutings every time. It is great,
that's right. And also let's notforget about Trey Pooser with the spots start
on Friday, Travis Smith unavailable andTrey pitched great. Jeff, he was
fun to watch Friday night. Yeah, and I'm not saying we didn't expect
anything like that, but for thelength he went, what was it six
days, right, yeah, awhile for him to do that. I
(05:15):
mean, and because of the weather, you know, we try to get
him out of the wind and thecold for a little bit, give him
COEs, handwarmers, all that stuff, and I mean, man, he
was positive attitudes no matter what wasgoing on, like just ready to dominate
on the mound. And then evenJohnny Hummel coming in after him, was
I mean, he those two rightthere just I mean, they did exactly
what they needed to do to keepus in. Obviously we hope we wished
(05:39):
it didn't go into extras, butsure that happens. I mean, I
was at the ull. They fixedit real quick once it went to the
eleven. They did. That wasthe heck of an ending. I was.
I was at the state tournament Fridaynight, watching that kid from Harlan
County score like forty eight points.Awesome performance. When we had the game
on me and my buddy had thegame on our phone and Johnny Hummell his
curveball and splitter man are discs watchingit from that camera angle a Missouri where
(06:02):
it's like literally behind his back andyou can see it. Man, good
stuff. I hope he keeps itup. He came in from one of
the probably the second inning. Hecame in and you could tell he was
like just wanting us to score arun, just to he could for sure
close it out. And I waslike, Johnny, don't worry. They
cannot touch you. They will nottouch you. I'll throw it. So
that's right. Not that that youknow, made him go that extra mile,
(06:25):
but you know, the words ofencouragement from me tell you something you
have saw from Johnny coming from Dtwo transferring in like getting that first taste
of the SEC because you really don'tknow until you're thrown out there, right,
And he has really handled Georgian Missourivery well so far. He's been
a bright spot for sure. Wellhe's an older guy too, and yeah,
that works for Kentucky, it doesit? Works out. Well,
(06:47):
we're chatting with our guests, JeffPoole, he's with the equipment team.
He actually is the manager of Kentucky'sequipment. He's the one behind all these
great ideas with the designs of theuniforms and the helmets and all the awesome
unifor you see. We'll talk moreabout that coming up in just a moment,
but guys, I really wanted totouch on just for a minute,
bigger picture in the SEC and kindof explain to folks in baseball when you
(07:10):
think about trying to make a regionalhow the math works. It means you
take care of business at home andyou don't get swept on the road,
You get to fourteen wins, yougot a chance to play in the postseason
two weeks in Kentucky, I thinkmathematically is plus two to the good.
Right now, they swept Georgia athome, there's one, and now you've
won a series on the road, there's two. So now it's almost like,
(07:30):
okay, you're plus two if youcan at least go to Ole,
miss which is an extremely tough placeto play. The rebels are tough.
Let's say, worst case scenario, you're one and two, you're still plus
two to three weeks into the season, and if you can get to fifteen
or sixteen wins, now you're talkingabout hosting a regional again. So I
think the start's been huge for Kentucky. Yeah, definitely. I think what
you say is is spot on.You got to take advantage of I don't
(07:53):
want to say the weaker matchups, but you know, we know the Gallin's
coming, right, Like the topten. Yeah, I think you must
amaze nothing but top ten teams.Yea, exactly, So you gotta when
there are significantly easier teams to play, you gotta. You gotta take advantage
of the wins. Take like yousaid, when you're at home. I
don't know if anybody expected to sweepGeorgia, but that was awesome. I
mean we just from top to bottompitching, hitting, kick the crap out
(08:16):
of them. Uh yeah, itwas. But then in the sec you
never know, like you might catcha team at the wrong time, you
might catch them up the right timefor you get out and and like you
said, don't get swept. AndI think this team can for sure host.
I see the talents there. Likewe just talked about the pitching has
been unbelievable so far. I thinkthat'll continue. And in your strength,
(08:39):
the schedules really good non conference. In the midweek games you have coming up,
three of them are on the roadXavier, Sanford, and Louisville and
then you get Louisville here, Soyour RPI is going to stay up with
your midweek right. I think youwere talking about the math. The math
I think is everything in this league, and every single team knows like it
doesn't matter until you get to fourteen. That's something we talked a lot about
(09:00):
last year early in the season withour success, like we started off what
eight and one, like it didn'tmatter, Like we didn't we had eight
wins, we didn't have fourteen,So it's just sprinting to fourteen. Like
that's why the Sunday game of Missouriis so big, because you've got to
get one more in that win columnand fourteen you got it. It's not
like you can just coast either, like you'd go to Missouri you win on
(09:20):
Friday, it's like, oh therethere's our one win on the road.
No, we got to like wegotta keep going and sprint and the more
wins you can rack up in theplus side of your column. Then that
way if you happen to run intoa buzzsaw of a red hot team where
you just have a bad weekend.Yeah, I mean, and that's coming.
Like we said, it's baseball. It's baseball. You're not gonna win.
Arkansas's probably the only team in theleague not worried about the math is
(09:41):
they sit there this morning the overwhelmingfavorite to win the league. We're chatting
with Jeff Pool here on behind KentuckyBaseball. He is the athletic equipment Coordinator.
If you want the official title forJeff, We've been giving him a
hard time on here, but that'shis official title. Before we really dive
into him, we want to remindyou about Assured Partners. When the unexpect
it happens in business, your insurancecoverage is the real MVP. Assured Partners
(10:03):
and our partner, Frankenmuth Insurance aretrue team players. We provide unique coverage
to face risks head on so youcan stay in the game. Let's get
frank about your business insurance. CallAssured Partners today at eight five, nine,
five, four, three one sevenone six or visit us at Assured
Partners dot com. That's www.Dot Assured Partners dot com. Jeff,
(10:24):
one of the first things I wantedto ask you about is you have an
opportunity as the equipment coordinator to designnew jerseys or anything working with Nike to
get this done. What's the feelinglike when you get a design drawn up
and then you see the finished productand the excited reaction of the guys when
they see a new jersey or anythingunveiled. Yeah, it makes the job
(10:48):
a lot better just because there's aprocess you go through and you're kind of
like there's times where I kind ofsecond guess myself of like, thanks,
what if I we tweak this ordo this? And you never know what
the guys are gonna think. Butyou know, when you got a guy
like Darren Williams who comes into theoffice all the time, I usually just
ask and see like, hey, what do you think about this? And
they'll I mean, he'll shoot youstraight right, He'll tell me if it's
(11:09):
a good idea, a bad idea. No, it's just really neat because
I kind of put my own spinon things. If you've noticed since I've
been a part of the program,I always try to throw the state logo
in there, like they're just astate because me being from Kentucky, it
just not to be kind of oneof these guys, but it just means
(11:30):
more to be a part of theprogram, you know. So it's just
it's a neat process for me.I never thought as a kid that,
you know, watching UK sports allthe time, that one day I would
be helping create uniforms and designs. And then you know, fast forward years
and it's on the field and it'sjust kind of neat to see. And
then you the love I get onTwitter. Matt made does a great job
(11:50):
of posting things and giving me shoutouts and all that, which is definitely
helps helps me get through the jobat times. You know, it's not
all glorious and rainbows and butterfly, but it has its moments which really cool
and and uh yeah, it's justit's just a neat thing. I just
never thought it would have happened. You know, how proud of you are?
Are you of those black jerseys becausethose things are sharp, man,
(12:11):
I love them. I love them. They're winning more games. Last year
we had a bad streak going wherewe weren't winning anything, but New Jerseys
coach Manage actually had a really goodquote. He said, how many freshmen
are actually good in your SEC?First year, first year in the SEC,
so second year in that's why welove them. Speaking of the uniforms,
(12:35):
the new gray batting helmets this week. Those are fire. Those are
all over Twitter. Yes, Isaw a few college Yeah nice. Yeah.
I thought it would help us out, even from kind of my job
perspective, traveling and all that.If there was just one helmet we took
on the road, just make itto match the pants and the To me,
a Matt finish on a helmet justlooks phenomenal, whether it's baseball or
(12:58):
football. To me, it's justit's icing on the cake. And then
you know, we got a guythat does those three D decals. To
me, that just took it toa hold another level on the design process
and logos and all that. Soyeah, I'm happy the way they turned
out. The boys. The boysare looking good out there. Now.
Why haven't we wore our best uniformyet? That's the only that's the only.
(13:24):
We won the black too. Man, you know the cream, we
gotta have the cream with the Kentuckyscript, what are we doing? I
don't know if you've noticed this yet, but we have like three people in
the program that wear their pants up. I know, you know how it
is. That's the look. Yep, they don't like it. That's bad.
It's tough. Hey, vintage wentout when you graduated. I guess
(13:46):
he Every time I got to pickthe uniforms for a start, I'm picked.
We know, yeah, we know, I love I love that.
It was actually funny and the staffmeeting got brought up because Travis was gonna
wear them. It was the GeorgiaFriday right and coach Man's and Cozy.
We're kind of saying, well, why don't we wear our school colors on
the home opener? I said, well, because the Friday starter always picks
(14:07):
what they want to wear. Iwas like, he wants to wear a
cream, so let's make it happen. They're they're kind of they're like,
well, we're gonna talking about itbecause they want to wear blue and white.
I get, you know, schoolcolors, uh, but your your
pitching coach said, what don't creama midweek thing? I was like,
no, Darren Ward all the time, what are you talking about? So
(14:28):
that was pretty funny. I don'tknow they'll they'll make an appearance at some
point. Got to dude, youcan't wait for that one. Maybe we're
working waiting for a special game. There we go, There you go.
Hey, let's talk about the teamthat you've built around you as the equipment
coordinator. You've got a great groupof guys that work super hard and really
their only chance to get any kindof shine is through social media with their
(14:48):
Twitter account, the manager's Twitter account. So tell us a little bit about
the guys that you have working withyou and and how they how the idea
for the manager's Twitter account came abouta couple of years ago. Yeah,
So, I'm all, my guysare rock stars. I've I haven't had
really a bad worker since I've beena part of the program. We do
it kind of a for an extensiveinterview process, to be honest with it's
(15:09):
a it's a three step process andbasically once you make it to the third
step, you got to meet withCoach Mans and if you pass his test,
like you know how, he's goodof finding out if you're a good
person or not. So uh,most guys can get through that and man
from top to bottom, like MarkSchuemaker, He's phenomenal. He he's the
guy that like he'll take care ofstuff that I forget about because there's a
(15:33):
thousand things going on. And thenI just he's like my safety blanket because
I know if I didn't get it, like whether it's be something simple like
hangers from lockers or folding VP towhatever, I know, he's gonna knock
it out. And he's a hecan do anything for us. He can
throw ep if he's asked, hecan catch bullpens, he can hit fun
go. So you got him.Who's He's been in our program for three
years now. He's been great forme. And he's also he I don't
(15:58):
know if he'll listen to this, but he's also really I just won't say
that to Yeah, those guys areout there with us, man, they
are practice every day. Everybody's dappingthem up. I'm joking with them.
They're gotta have them. Thank Godfor them. It's crazy to think because
like the normal fan doesn't realize it, but they and I'm not trying to,
you know, float our boats here, but they're very important to the
pro Like the amount of bullpens thatare thrown need to be caught. The
(16:22):
even guys catching it first, secondbase, extra work with the guys,
like feeding machines. Yeah, it'sit takes everybody to make a program successful.
And all my guys are good.Uh. The next guy got up
is Jordan Peele. We call himJP cat. I mean, yeah,
he's a stud He's just a getit done guy. Like you know,
(16:42):
I say something needs to be done, He's on it, you know.
Then I got three new guys tothe program. Had a had a lot
of guys leave just from graduation andall that. So then I'll go to
Peyden kessel Ring. He's in gradschool. Great guy. Uh again,
he's another on field, can doanything you ask him to do, catch
(17:02):
bullpens, hit funk, goes allthat. He was he was a transfer.
I ain't even in a transfer portalsgot to hit it. Yeah.
And then I've got Wyatt and offSinger and he kind of replaced Matthew in
the tech tech world. He canalso help on the field, catch at
bases and all that. He's usuallywith the outfielders and they take good care
(17:23):
of him out there. And thenI've got the legacy of a Caden Roller.
Yeah, and he's another stud man. I got nothing bad to say
about any of my guys. Theyshow up early, stay late, help
me with everything I need to do, and they're rock stars. We have
to give some love to the managersbecause yeah, god, they're working a
lot right now, and I liketo think about the work they do kind
(17:45):
of in every day as you goabout your business, kind of goes unnoticed
because it gets done. If theydon't do it, then it's like,
well, what happened to this orthat? I mean, for the fans
at home, these are the guysthat are rubbing dirt on baseballs, they're
getting uniform whatever, were the guysgetting it ready for him? They're hitting
bp like you guys mentioned. Imean, there's just so much stuff they
do that really you don't think aboutuntil somebody doesn't do it. So follow
(18:10):
their Twitter account and share their contents. Well that's what speaking of the Twitter
thing, So like, I don'tdo anything with it. To be honest
with you, it's all them.I let them run it now. Obviously
if something's questionable, go back ina little bit. But uh, for
the most part, Mark is theguy who runs. He's being the longest,
so I just I let him havefun with it, cause like,
you know, the season's long. It's hard on them too. It's gotta
(18:32):
have some fun with it, exactly, gotta have fun with Speaking of fun,
did you make the pink hat andthe dugout? Or we have been
I've been trying to figure out wherethat came from. So far, everybody
tells me, I don't know.I gotta talk to about that. I
gotta have a conversation. Who doyou think? Yeah, yeah, your
old roommate, right, yeah,Mason Moore, there you go. Hey,
whatever gets the boys buzzing. TheyNico Lop has put up a post
(18:55):
on Instagram, the best dugout incollege baseball. You're right there with them,
man and me and Darren commented onthis last week during one of the
ball games. Like them boys looklike they're having a great time in there,
man, and that that's the markof a good team. Is a
lot of mojo. The the anticsthat I've seen this year have been on
real, just like the creativity, the energy. Like it not to sound
(19:18):
corny, but it actually does matterwhen you're doug Like this weekend at Missouri,
if they weren't into it, weprobably would have losed two games,
not just one. They were backto imitating manage this weekend too, just
coaching third base. That was thatmight be the best thing I've ever seen
a dug out do. Yeah,I don't know how he can concentrate with
that. He's locked in. Hedoes. He does a good job and
(19:38):
staying locked in, because I wouldbe cracking up. I wouldn't do.
I mean when they were doing ithere, I guess it was the Georgia
series and James McCoy was standing atsecond laughing while he's trying to get whatever
the play call is from the dugout. I mean, that was fantastic.
I did hear speaking of the dugout. Just Ethan Hendle has a buddy that's
(19:59):
on Missouri's team. Apparently on eitherSaturday or Sunday's film review, Missouri had
just our dugout and their coaches said, that's what a doug was supposed to
do. I love that. That'sgreat. That's unreal, exactly right there,
whatever it takes. I mean, that's great. I mean, just
think about the last few years we'vehad Harney going to work. We've had
(20:19):
trash can lids, we've had vessand all kinds of stuff, So why
not a pink fuzzy hat. Let'sget weird, right, Let's get weird
whatever I gets the boys going. We're chatting with Jeff Pool here on behind
Kentucky Baseball. He is the athleticcub equipment coordinator. Easy for me to
say for Kentucky Baseball. But wewere talking about the social media stuff,
(20:42):
the guys having fun with that, and at one point, you guys even
had your own podcast, right,Yeah, fun was that? That was
really awesome. Me and Kendle Roller, we just it was one of those
things that we had some free timebecause a lot of stuff was getting done
before like the six thirty games, and we were just joking about it one
day, like yeah, like don'twe just do our own podcast. So
one day we just hooked it upto our phone, started recording, and
(21:04):
he just kind of tweaked a littlebit. We kept going back and forth
and we we ended up getting twentyfour to twenty five episodes. So now
he's a girl that we have that. He's a grown married man and he's
got his own life going. He'sgot to get back to record a podcast
or to everyone, So I wouldlike to actually it keeps me going,
you know, agree, man now, so hopefully you know, we call
(21:26):
it the JK Podcast, just reallysimple Jeff and Kendall. Not much creativeness
behind that. Whatever works. Yeah, we just follow the guys, you
know, talk about the season. It was fun. We got a couple
more minutes to left here on behindKentucky Baseball. Let's talk about the other
side of what you do and thatwithout betraying confidences with a lot of stories,
(21:48):
the relationship you form with the guysand is dub set off the top.
You're sort of a therapist for theseguys. What what is that like
to develop these relationships and these guysconstantly come in and out of your office.
So at first I was a littlenot weird it out, but I
just like wasn't expecting it, becauseyou know, when you get hired,
you're you think your job is goingto be exactly what it says. It's
obviously in athletics is just not it. You know, it's other duties as
(22:12):
a sign. So once you kindof build that relationship with the players,
and honestly, I think what startsit is I I don't treat them like
they're this gift from God, likeyou're this you know, oh my God,
you're a golden glovelin or I gotto get everything for you. I
just treat like a normal person, right, you know, they wake up
cotton shirt, gray cotton shirt, and I just I think a lot of
(22:36):
guys actually respect that of like theyknow if they come talk to me,
it's gonna be just me and themhanging out. Just I don't even care
if we talk about baseball. It'sjust hey, man, how's the family
doing, how's life. I justlook at them more than just a baseball
player, because at some point that'sgoing to be over right, And instead
of people putting them on a pedestalbecause they play a sport, like you
(22:57):
know, dog was just gonna talkto him about life, man, because
there's more. Guy. We alllove the sports, we all love athletics,
but like there's more to it justplaying a game. So I think
that definitely built a trust with theguys. And then I've heard some things
that I probably shouldn't have, butthey know in full confidence they can come
(23:21):
talk to me and and just ventor just hang out just to get a
break from everything because their lives arebusy, man, you know it like
from last to live to practice.Yeah, right, Yeah, and I
enjoyed a lot. Man. It'sit's awesome for me just to kind of
have that type of bond because I'min a in a weird spot too,
(23:41):
where you know your coach is yourcoach, Like there's a there's a level
of respect there, there's a levelof just like I don't think I should
tell my coach everything, which Iget that, you know, but where
I'm not exactly an enforcer. Theyknow like, Okay, it's another guy
in the building. He's with usevery single day, Like, yeah,
we can come talk to him andabout literally anything. Yeah. I'm similar
(24:03):
to that with my job is Iwant these guys to be able to trust
me, and coaches too, orJeff or dub or whoever to cut you
know, if they just want totalk talk, let's talk shop whatever,
you know, and you know it'snot getting beyond the two of us.
I get that. You all travelwith the team too. Yeah, throughout
the week. So you see aguy at breakfast in the hotel, you
know, sit there and just talkabout everything but baseball, right right,
(24:25):
I'm not gonna pick the other tablejust because he's sitting there. I'm want
to sit bye. I love that. So Jeff talking you obviously you have
a strong connection with all of theseguys and we're almost halfway to the halfway
point in the season. What's gotyou pumped up for the next few weeks
and month of the season, justto know what this team can do.
Yeah, I think the potentials there. I think we can definitely repeat what
(24:48):
we did last year, if notgo a step further. Man It talent's
there. The group of guys,it's it's very similar to last year where
