Welcome back into Behind Kentucky Baseball. We're brought to you by Assured Partners.
Try a frank conversation today. Visitwww dot Assured Partners dot com. From
Kentucky Proud Park. I'm Darren Hedrickjoined across the table. If you're watching
on video by my co host,Darren Williams would call him Dub. And
in the middle, two outstanding individualsthat played a huge factor in Kentucky's Lexington
(00:22):
Regional championship. Immediately to my rightwe've got pitcher Robert Hogan, and to
his right we've got first baseman RyanNicholson, who was the most outstanding player
voted on in the Lexington Regional.Guys, welcome to Behind Kentucky Baseball and
congratulations on a terrific run so far. Thank you, Proud of you guys.
(00:44):
That was as dominant a regional asanyone had in the country. Y'all
bawled out, So it was alot of fun to watch you guys this
weekend. You had this guy firedup in the rag Man. I gotta
say I was letting it eat didSaturday that clip on Twitter of the home
run, I was you were rightnext to me, but we were getting
after it. Man short Sell, this guy you called his first home run
(01:07):
of the WEEKND I did, you'rewelcome number. I was like, well,
he said, you know, he'sgot nineteen pumps on the year,
and I was like, man, number twenty right here would be real cool.
Thank somebody else. I think likeKendle came in the dugout and he
was like, hey, like Icalled that or whatever, and I was
like, he's called, like Iwant to say, at least four yeah,
(01:29):
year. So it's been kind offunny. We need him to continue
calling. Let's get a couple morein there, right, I gotta speak
on I got to ask you somethingabout the home run because I've been thinking
about this. You know, weput this interview together. Like you have
pop to the APO field like notmany players in the country have. You
can take some balls to left centerfield and it looks like you're a right
(01:51):
handed hitter pulling the ball, butthat just comes as being a really good
hitter. How much do you workon hitting the ball the other way?
Because I couldn't hit the ball, you know, to begin with up the
middle, like at all, Iwas terrible hitter. But you just like
Flick your wrist bomb left center field. Dude. It's honestly something I don't
really try to do. I thinkreally the pitch kind of dictates where it
goes. I never really thought oflike trying to like hit the ball or
(02:15):
pull it for a homer or goIt's honestly, just like wherever the ball
is, I just try to turnbehind it and wherever my barrel catches it
at. Yeah, with the angleof where I hit it, that's where
it goes. And sometimes it's opo, sometimes it's pull, sometimes it's you
know, center. But I don'treally try to be like, oh,
like I have to like pull theball to get out or do whatever.
(02:36):
That. Well, I know thathome run against Indiana State was pulled and
wallowed. That one felt like afour iron Tiger Woods like stinger. Right.
More of that, baby, Yeah, take us a little bit into
your approach, Ryan, because Iknow some hitters they they look middle so
(02:58):
that way they can drive the ball, like you were talking about laughter,
they can pull it, right. What's kind of your approach when you're going
up there, no matter the armyou're facing. Well, that's the thing
is I feel like the arm isit kind of dictates vary a lot of
like on like skying report, butI think in general, I think it's
just try to see something high orwhatever. For me, like I like
(03:19):
to do damage up and if that'ssomething that I can really see early and
really just get in my zone andreally try to do damage with, that's
kind of what I look for, especially something firm early. Lately it's been
a lot more the opposite, witha lot more off speed, which getting
used to that, but you know, just something that I can really handle
(03:39):
and be slow and early. Iknow, me and me and Ammo try
to work on that as much aswe can. Just I mean, hitting
every day, you try to findit every day, so just really try
to be slow, controlled and justlike do the same thing every day.
I gotta speak on the best homerun of the year down in Gainesville,
(04:00):
Oh ninth inning. So story,I was coaching in my high school baseball
team and I checked the score. All we're down, okay, go coach
for half an inning? Come back? Oh my god, and see the
home run. I forget you.Robert Hogan. What was that reaction watching
that home run in Gainesville? Likein the bullpen and the dugout because it
(04:21):
looked like you guys were going nuts. We were going crazy. And every
time this guy gets up to bad, it's one of those things where it's
like, all right, he's gota chance of absolutely just going yard.
Yeah, you know, and thatthat's what's pretty cool. Yeah, when
you're getting in such like a dogfight like you all were in that Florida
game, and like he comes upin the big moment two outs in the
ninth, well, like, didyou think like he could go deeper?
(04:45):
Yeah? I think I think thewhole team thought that, honestly. I
mean, he's one of those guyswhere it's like, yeah, he's hot.
He's just like he's got that likeit factor. Right Hey, we
got a few of them on thisteam. Oh yeah, speaking of right
here it factor. I gotta asnub from the All Regional team and Robert
Hogan because it won us the gameon Friday against West and closed it out.
(05:08):
Dude, what was your mindset goinginto that? I know you had
been extended in the SEC tournament reallyfor the first time you've've usually been a
one or two in a guy.Yeah, and then SEC Tournament down on
Hoover, you throw like fifty sixtypitches, nails, nails, He's nails
and then you just go out andsix seventh inning and got the whole game.
Yeah. So I guess my thoughtprocess was like, just as soon
(05:29):
as they handed me the ball, like I'm finishing this oft Yeah, I
said, I'm not leaving it inthe hands like I'm of anything outside of
this. I said, I'm goingall out. Yeah. Oh there,
yeah, there we got sorry,And so I was just like, you
know what, I'm just gonna goin there. I'm gonna throw strikes,
attack, right, and I meanmy seventh inning was six pitches, yeah,
you know, And that was thebiggest thing too, is like just
(05:50):
being able to limit the pitch countand at the same time just going and
be on attack and not walk guys. Yeah, that's a big key in
the you know, postseason. Wewere speaking about it on the radio broadcast
Illinois. Would the guy got intoso much trouble because he just hit people?
Yeah, and then you get RyanNicholson up and he does damage against
them. They're guys like that. So, you know, is that like
(06:12):
a mantra of the whole entire bullpen, Because the whole bullpen all weekend was
nail like we ain't given we ain'tgiven free passes away. If they hit
us, they hit us. Idon't know what you're all psyche was Yeah,
I was the message there. Ithink the message was played for the
last year. Guys. Yeah, this is like the last time any of
some guys are going to be ableto play on it, like right this
field here in Kentucky and play forthis state. And so I guess that
(06:33):
was the biggest thing, was like, hey, let's go out out,
let's do this for these guys.Let's uh, let's let's do it for
them. Let's not give anything tochance, have to one more week,
one more week here in old KPPmassive, massive chips on their shoulders.
Yeah, well, guys, wedon't normally get to do this, but
(06:53):
we're going to break a little newson the podcast right here is we're recording.
It has been announced that the superre between Kentucky and Oregon State will
be Saturday, Sunday and Monday thisweekend. A six o'clock starts Saturday night
and then Sunday night, June ninth, we get cats after dark. It'll
be a nine o'clock first pitch wowabout that, I mean Monday morning at
(07:14):
six thirty. Man, they don'tlike me sleeping, but I love it.
Baby, Primetime Saturday night. Oneone more off day for you boys.
It's gonna be a long day oftailgating Kentucky Faithful Nation's gonna be ready,
Yeah, they gonna be ready.Hey, what was the crowd like
from the perspective down on the field, Ryan, you're playing first base.
(07:36):
I know your head's in the game, but I'm sure you guys could feel
the energy from the fans this weekend. Yeah. I mean I think first
when I felt it was like we'recoming out of the rain delay and I
walk out there and I'm like, holy caw, Like there's like all these
people stuck it out in the rain, like I honestly did not really expect
(07:58):
it, but or maybe they werelike waiting a car whatever, Like I
thought. I didn't think that theywould just be like wearing it like on
in their season yep, like we'rejust gonna wait here, But they didn't.
Now I was so impressed. Andthen yeah, just going on through
that, the atmosphere, like everypitch like everyone was just so dialed,
(08:18):
like it was every pitch everybody wason it. Like the collapse, the
cheers, blue white, whatever, like everybody was was in it, and
I feel like it affected. Like, I mean, there were guys on
Indiana State They're like this is thisis crazy, like the noise and everything.
I was like, yeah, it'spretty noisy watching Mason. Let's give
(08:41):
this guy a shout out Sunday. He was not one hundred percent. He'd
been battling through a little stomach bug, but he was his defense. You
guys picked him up all night long. Throughout the night, he was getting
the balls in play that he needed. You guys made the plays behind him.
But every once in a while youcould just tell the fans were like
willing him to make a pitch anda spot, get strike three, or
(09:01):
get the ground ball, get thefly ball. You could kind of feel
it building him back up as hewas trying to empty his tank on the
mount. Yeah, yeah, totally, he was. I felt like he
I know that he probably didn't thinkhe had his best stuff, but he's
like one of those guys who's likehe competes so well with like himself to
try and manipulate the game in hisfavor. And yeah, like you could
(09:26):
tell. I remember there was aninning I forget which one was, but
I think it was the fifth, might have been the fifth. First and
second nobody out, and I thinkwe had a couple of mound visits and
he he was just like upset withhimself. And Devin comes out there and
he was like, dude, likeyou gotta like basically like believe in yourself
stuff like that, and you know, coach Dan Roselle comes out there and
(09:48):
says the same thing, and it'sbasically like it's all on his shoulders really,
and he he comes out, Hecomes back, I think from like
a two zero count, punches theguy out and like, I mean,
this place erupts like I'm like, all right, well we're gonna get of
this. At this point, likethe you could just see the momentum flip,
and I think that was due tolike the crowd having basically like they
had the momentum like in their handsand they flipped out. I can speak
(10:09):
on that last year in the regionalfinal, like it was the first,
second, third, fourth inning whenI was throwing and the crowd was so
into it, like every single twostrike pitch, like it was like everyone's
standing up. It's the ninth inningout there, in the second. That's
what postseason baseball. That's the greatthing about postseason baseball. I gotta go
back to the mound visits though, because Mason Moore is a different personality than
(10:33):
my man Bobby spins here. Ireally need to go in town. And
I love that Bobby's intense, NonStopRobert with this right now when he's on
the mound, he's a different guy. You gotta be you gotta be totally
different. Mason Moore needs a littlemore firing up sometimes. This man right
here. What do you think aboutthat guy when he's about so intense.
(10:54):
I love playing behind him because it'sso fun because he like it looks like
he's just salivating on the mound justto like get out. And the fire
that he pitches with, it's itjust is infectious, especially guys around the
infield. And it also again likecreates momentum. He gets as a guy
(11:15):
to end you know, the side, and he's coming in with with juices
flowing and then it's like, allright, well now our offense is right.
Where does that come from? Iguess this comes from like the competitor
side of me and like I'm justhaving fun, you know, I haven't
been able to experience that much inthe past of being like a true competitor
(11:35):
and showing like what I actually loveto do, and that's like go crazy.
Yeah you know what I mean, you got that's the fun part of
baseball for us, right, that'swhat we do, Like you gotta go
nuts. And so I mean forme, I'm just like, you know
what this is for everyone behind me? Like these are for the guys,
and like if we're in a spotlike I'm just gonna go crazy after this,
absolutely why not? Yeah, that'swhat you're doing it for. Where
does that come from? Did youplay other sports growing up? Do you
(11:56):
have brothers, sisters where that madeyou so competitive? So those competitive juices?
Yeah, I would say, likeI played football growing up, I'll
do it, a little bit ofhockey growing up, So definitely had like
I had some competitive in that. And then I have two brothers, five
sisters, so wow, there yougo. That'll do it. That'll do
it, dude. So definitely gotsome competitiveness in there. Always wanted to
(12:18):
win growing up, no matter whoit was, my dad, my stepdad.
I was like, you know what, I'm not letting nobody win,
right, Oh, so hockey.Growing up, I can't skate. I'll
a minute, can't skate. How'dyou get into that? What was that
growing up? Like? I guessfor thinking about First off, where are
you from, I'm from Minnesota.Minnesota, Okay, there you go up
(12:39):
north so as we call it thestate of hockey. Yeah. So I
mean, I guess if you don'tplay hockey, if you're not good at
skating, you're kind of weird inour eyes. So I guess growing up
like that, and all my friendsplayed, and so it was like we
got to like, I'm like, all right, I got you. I
love just like smacking people. Ohmy gosh. Yeah, like people.
My thing was just like I Ilove just being rough right. It didn't
(13:01):
matter, like it didn't matter whatwas going on, Like if I didn't
like something someone did, I'm sorryyou're getting laid out absolutely, but I
love that. I would kill whatSean Horney, you played on team two
years. You know one of mybest friend shout out Sean. He always
played Hockey's from CONNECTICU from Massa alwaysplayed hockey. And I'd be like,
dude, I'd love to see thatdude play hockey because I mean that's a
(13:24):
really intense We're watching NHL playoffs becausethat's all that's on Tuesday nights on the
ESPN now and just laying people outlike that's that's so cool. I love
watching It's it's pretty fun. It'sone of those sports where I wish I
was good enough to like play, but like keep playing. But at the
same time, baseball is just oneof those games where you can't you can't
(13:46):
go wrong with, right, So, how did you relate you know,
hockey growing up? I would assumethe competitive side to baseball In Minnesota,
I would say, like, it'ssame with football too. Yeah, like
football and hockey, they're very hardcontact sports, and honestly, they're both
like mentally tough, right like,And that's where I was able to get
that with with baseball. Like Iwould get hurting football, I'm like,
(14:09):
no, I'm gonna keep playing, you know, And then if I got
hurt in baseball, it's like,no, I'm good, I'm gonna keep
playing right all my go through it. Yeah my arm hurts, Nah,
No I don't. Yeah, youknow, it's like love that toughness.
Yeah, that was Bobby Like onwhat was that the last day of the
regional and he's like, yeah, like I'm hot today. I think,
yeah, fifty pitches forty eight hoursago, I'm going again. He's like,
(14:31):
yeah, I'm gonna sure. Hey, whatever it takes, dude,
whatever it takes to get the seasonto one more week. That's what I'm
saying. Let's call a quick timeout here on Behind Kentucky Baseball and remind

com. Ryan Nicholson and Robert Hoganour guests here on Behind Kentucky Baseball,
And Ryan, what you do youmake look very easy at first base?
(15:16):
It's not. The picks can beincredibly difficult. But when you see guys
like Mitchell Daily, Grant Smith, and Amelian Peatree making some of these diving
catches or whatever, and they're tryingto get the relay to you. Man,
what's it like like trying to finishsome of these plays because they're they're
slinging that over to you. Imean it's pretty sweet. You're like,
well, I want to make thisa top ten player, right, that's
(15:39):
what you want to do. Imean you see, like, I mean
Grant's number one on this last weekend. I mean, Daily's in the hot
corner making picks. I mean,Pete's been making plays all year. I
mean I could probably pull highly realise, but yeah, yeah, it's just
you know, all those guys aremaking plays, and you know, I
just try to, you know, connect it really at the end there.
So I mean, honestly, it'spretty cool. I have a front row
(16:03):
seat to like all these guys arejust nasty gloves. Yeah. Other than
that, I just try to beover there and just pick the ball and
make some plays. At first, got to give a shout out to our
guests. Last week, g Moneywas sick unreal, Like what were you
all thinking? It was like Waldy, Waldy, Waldy, Waldy. I
(16:23):
was like, Waldy, sprint, call him off, get out of here.
Literally, We're in the bullpen andwe're like yelling at Waldy like in
in, in in, and thenall of a sudden we see g sprint
and we're like, no way,G gets to this, and G like
comes out of just nowhere getting itand were like me, Buyers and Johnny
are on the fence just banging onit, just like going crazy. What
was even more amazing about it wasthe third. The runner at third was
(16:45):
so amazed he caught it. Heforgot to try and tag and score because
he might have scored on that play, but he was watching Grant like the
rest of us reaction thinking. Iwas like, Okay, where's this runner?
I thought he makes that play? And I'm like, wow, like
that was that was insane a lotof other terms I probably couldn't use,
but he makes that playing. Yeah, the guy third is I think he
(17:07):
was maybe like a couple feet offthe bag had to go back and tag,
and I was like, no way, he didn't just tag. And
the guy at first he's he's palmsup, I think, and uh,
I'm like obviously again like moment orwhatever, like all right, well we're
gonna get this third out unscathed, and uh it just just took the air
right out of there. There's nothingbetter, honestly after that than all the
media, like the national like done writers and stuff, just starting compliment
(17:33):
in our middle infield, like we'vebeen saying it since the fall, best
middle infield in the country. Yeah, what's it like pitching behind that because
you get the ball to Grant,Peter Mitch or this guy right here.
It's an act. No, That'swhat I'm telling you. Even I even
said it, uh the other day, it's so easy. Yeah, when
you have guys like ron A pdG and Mitchell behind you, even like
(17:55):
in center field, I mean NolanWaldy, James's arm like dev behind the
plate like this defense. Yeah, you can't like it's just so easy because
it's like, I know, ifI felt like, that's why it's so
easy to throw strikes, it's likethey hit the ball in the field.
It's like, all right, it'snot yeah unless obviously I make a mistake,
And yes, exactly. So,I mean, how many teams have
the luxury of having three short stopson their middle or in the infield and
(18:21):
then their outfield. I could youcould argue may have three center fielders because
James covers a ton of territory.Waldy's fast. Obviously we know how good
Nolan is in center. I mean, this defense is just elite. Yeah,
it's unbelievable. I've never seen anythinglike it. I mean, and
then plus, I mean you haveyou see Ron's That's what we were talking
about. What he makes it lookeasy. It's not put Ron out at
short stops. They take fun goesout as short. I would love.
(18:47):
I remember when I was at Sincy, like they would like when we would
do VP, like our fungo guys, they would just like hit to like
the middle and like I want toget fungos. So I would just trot
over to short and just kind oflike want screw around right like I loved
it. But Lefty flip yeah, and like being Lefty, it's just it's
whatever. You got to be overat the bag at first. But playing
shorts super fun. I was justgonna say, it looked like, I
(19:11):
mean, obviously, you guys enjoyhitting because you're good at it, but
it looked like this team was havingmore fun playing defense this weekend than you
guys were hitting. We were wewere so dialed. I just remember,
like I think there was a momentin the game where I think, I
want to say, Mitch, butI could be wrong. I think we
might have a mountin visit and hewas like, dude, just like hit
(19:32):
the ball anywhere you're It's like whenyou get like the the fire the fire
net, and like, yeah, heat check, the heat check. What
was that game? It was like, was it NBA jam? The NBA
jam when you just like can't miss, Like you're just like, well you
could shoot from the logo whatever,Like you're not screwing up. I was
like, we are like scalding hotright now in the field, Like let
(19:55):
him hit it. We've talked aboutit. And such a fun brand of
baseball to watch, such a funbrand of baseball to watch, Like,
our offense is crazy. The defenseis awesome to watch too. I had
to back that up a little bitto Robert though. One of the best
things that Dan Roselle ever like coachedme on was like, dude, your
defense is insane. Yeah, LikeI had Ryan Ritter here, I had
Grant Smith here, I had DanielHarris here, and I had a million
(20:18):
peach right here. The defense wasstupid good. Yeah, And obviously that's
something that they preach all the time. You get the pound the zone,
get the ball to them. Youknow, pound the zone, get the
ball to them. Easy. What'ssome adjustments that Coach Rozelle has made for
you? Because last year at Aand M didn't go the way you wanted
to, didn't pitch as much asyou want. You take a bet on
yourself. You jump in the portallike, all right, I'm going to
(20:40):
the sec to Kentucky. You gethere with Coach Rozelle and you're You've shot
up like crazy. You're one ofthe best arms we got. Now,
what's that process been like with youand Coach Rozel in your training? So
he's done a like unbelievable job withme. I mean, obviously last year
was not good, could not findthe zone. I was scared, I
was not confident, didn't believe Ihad it. And this year he's like
(21:04):
I hear it from Ammo, Ihear it from Salo, I hear from
Fits, I hear from all ofthem, like, dude, you've got
like the best stuff we've seen.Like, don't disgust him, Like you
don't have to, you don't haveto do anything crazy. I was like,
Okay, he's like plus look atyour defense, you know, and
it's like and like not only that, but it's like you if you're like
on the field, you can hearRon, you can hear p D,
(21:26):
you can hear g you can hearMitch all just talking to you, just
being like, dude, you gotthis, Like they're all hyping you up,
and like that's just like all right, yeah, I'm going out there
like you're cocked and you're like,yeah, I'm ready. Like that's just
one of those things where it's justlike I think it's just cool. Like
when he throws, like his slideris so ridiculous where I'm like Bobby spins,
(21:47):
but I'll just like look at Pete. I'm like, and that's and
that's one thing that even Roselle waslike, dude, just throw it in
the zone. Yeah, like youliterally don't have to try that hard with
it. I think that's something Iread on Mac Sureser. He's like,
obviously Max Shurser throws four pitches plusin the big league. Yeah, It's
like he leads the whole entire leagueand pitches right down the middle. Yeah,
(22:10):
because it's just as nasty of stuffas I can throw right down the
middle exactly. Yeah, that's allyou gotta do. Speak on that slider
a little bit because I needed andI have talked about that slid. Yeah,
I need a lesson to teach myhigh school players on this thing because
and you need to teach everybody inKentucky how to throw that thing because it
moves at a different level. Youthrow at eighty six eighty eight like it's
(22:34):
two. It's as legit as yousee. And he's got baseball speaking on
that slider. So how you foundthat? What your mindset is throwing that
kind of like like Darren saying, like I kind of throw it two different
pitches. Like my hard one ismore like the little cut kind of like
slider. Yeah, but it's notlike a cutter where it just goes side
aside. It's got the depth toit. But I just like to throw
(22:56):
it hard when it's like, allright, this is swinging miss time.
So you hold that all like slaughterand wrist or you go fast by fastball,
and I like spike it. Soso with this you're going straight down.
So if this is the you,I put my finger like this and
I spike it, yeah, andthen I just throw it like a fastball,
right, and then if I'm throwing, like trying to just go like
in the zone, get a littlebit more movement. I same thing,
(23:18):
but then I just go a littlebit with your wrists on the side.
Awesome. I mean, folks notwatching this on video, they're missing out
because that was a great tutorial.Yeah, if you need a slaughter lesson
from Bobby spins bit like this, turn your wrist and throw the Yeah,
throw the crap out of that ball. Yea at eighty six. Let it
eat fella's letity. It's so funto watch. I mean we've been talking
(23:40):
about it all year. Obviously you'vecome into your own in April, May
and June with the boys. Man, it's so fun to watch. Like
the hitters know it's coming. Weknow it's coming, Like everybody in the
stadium knows that slider is coming. And I love to see the report.
Yeah, like an opposing team likestanding out of their dugout like how every
team does, and they're like whatdoes this guy have? And it's like
(24:00):
you know with this like he's walkingout to the spins by what do you
think he's throwing? Speak on thatwalk out? Man, where did that
idea come from great great song.Yeah, Macmillan, rest in peace,
great song, right, I'm gonnabe honest, I was. It was
weight. It was like right beforethe season because I still hadn't picked one
yet, and I was like,I don't know what to do. And
(24:21):
then I was like thinking about him, like, you know what, I
spinned the ball a lot, andI really liked the Spins. Yeah,
it's like I kind of like thissong and then I did it, and
then like because I had to changeit because the first time I had like
a weird song, it was notlike it was one that got me fired
up, but it was not good. And then I was like, you
know what, I'm doing the Spins. And then the boys are like yeah,
because it's not like like something Iwalked out to which was nuts,
(24:44):
crazy hype up music. It's likejust a good vibe song, like I'm
not gonna get ready to run througha brick wall listen to the Spins,
dude, But it's just such agood vibe. We know this latter is
coming, so it's great. Ilove it. It's awesome. It's a
lot of fun. It's like Roselle'sbeen He's been great. He's and really
help him with that, and likehe's like dude. And then the sinker
too. I've never had a sinkerbefore, never thrown one before. There
(25:04):
you go, throw him off ninetythree. Yeah, slinging in the zone.
Baby. We've talked in this showso far about Mason Moore, the
sinker, change up, slider he'sgot. We've talked about Bobby Spins.
I want to talk a little bitabout Trey Pooser because you've got to watch
him Ryan. You may have facedhim in the fall in a scrimmage.
How nasty is that change up?Well? I think uh, I want
(25:26):
to say, did he develop thechange up a little later? I feel
like he started like, yeah,he was more of the slider. I
think first his like thing was likehe got so good at like getting comfortable
with like obviously like our new surroundingsbeing transfers, and it just like he
kept on like, Okay, nowhe has this pitch here, he's got
(25:47):
like he's got the break. Nowhe has two different fastballs. I think
he developed the sinker there. Ithink it was like during the season he's
got like a at least a fouror five pitch arsenal with like the two
fastballs, the change up in theI don't know if he has two breakers,
but he's just throwing all for strikesand like he's just up there like
he's cools the other side of thepillow, Like he's up there like just
(26:07):
the dude from from Charleston, justup there king it. And uh,
the moment's never really too big forhim. I know, he's just very
cool and calm. I mean, you saw me like fell the other day
Illinois. He's laughing, he's jokingaround, like he's he's very jovial out
there, and I think that isa very big part in how he throws.
(26:27):
So well, yeah, I would, I would one hundred percent agree.
I mean, that man is justlike he's just smiling all the time.
It's like that's just so fun towatch, Like he's just like you
just know, because like a lotof people do not like playing against people
who are just smiling on the mouth. That just kind of pisses you off.
And like so that's kind of funbecause you get to see them and
they're like seriously and then he's justlike, yeah, I think that's why
(26:48):
Florida got mad or when they whenhe gave him Homer. Was it like
Shelton or somebody, and they werelike John and him. I think he
was just like he's just smiling, just because I feel like he always smiles.
Meet Home. It's like, okay, next question. I love that
quick mindset. You know, veteran, veteran guy there in the locker room.
He's been a lot of fun towatch this year. Guest on the
(27:08):
show last week. Both of ourguests on the show last week, you
know, had pretty good weeks. So obviously Oregon State has the mess of
speak about the early thoughts on theSuper Regional. Obviously it's the first one
we've ever hosted a KPP in ourschool's history. Two out of three to
get to the big one. Omaha, man, your two wins away,
(27:30):
congrats on that and thank you.Just what's the mindset? Is it?
Win game one? Like go allout? Yeah that thing. I think
the mindset is, yeah, obviouslywin game one and we gotta, you
know, put everything out there.I think, like, I think there's
just a mindset in the locker room, and I think it's built off of
last year. I remember asking likea couple of my roommates like Hags and
(27:51):
Buyers and Nolan. I was like, what's like the difference from like this
year and last year, like winningthe regional. Like last year like yeah,
like we dog piled and like wejust didn't think that, like because
we lost that game two. Yeah, we lost game ten, Like there
was a little bit of doubt gettingto like that final moment just because of
(28:11):
like what you had to do tolike give that region, where like this
year they felt like, all right, like we're supposed to do this.
Yeah, we have like a biggerlike end in mind. And I think
that that's what transpired at the endof the game, where it's like,
yeah, like when the region's nice, but like we know, like we've
made some noise in like this upcomingweek and then you know maybe two weeks
(28:33):
from now. Yeah, absolutely,And that's I mean same here. It's
like being at a and M winninga regional, winning a Super and going
to Omaha like that was crazy, but being here it's it's almost a better
feeling right now because I I meanit's one of those things where it's like
you got guys you love, youknow, you've got a state that is
(28:56):
just in love with crazy, yeah, in love with the team, and
it's just so much fun, youknow, and I think with the Supers
coming up, I just can't waitto see BBN show out. I can't
either. I think this place isgonna be insane Saturday night. Yeah,
one more day for old Trey Poosterto rest. That's right, Give the
man the rock and Bobby Spins. We're wrapping things up because I know these
(29:22):
guys have to go get ready forthis weekend super Regional. But I just
wanted to compliment. We've talked aboutthe pitching staff and the defense, but
overall offensively, Ryan, I justwanted to compliment you and the other hitters
for the business like approach. Thisoffense took all weekend long, Illinois and
Indiana State. You guys, youknew you would face their best arms,
desperate arms to try to get wins, and you guys just chipped away.
(29:45):
It was just like watching somebody goto work on a concrete wall. You
guys just kept chipping and chipping isa run here and a run there,
but you kept adding on and thatwas huge. Yeah. I think that's
a testament to like our mean, like we menu, I think we manufacture
really well, and like we don'tlive and die by the long ball,
and I think that's huge, especiallyif we get to TDM Ror Trade,
(30:06):
which we all know how big thatpark plays Graveyard wind blowing out. Yeah.
So it's just like I feel likeit's it's very like it's like a
well oiled machine when you look upat the score where and you see like
four to one stack together. SoI feel like it's just like it's almost
just like another death nail for theopposing team, where's just like they put
another one up, all right,we're going to the fifth, we don't
(30:27):
score, they put another one up, a right, so now we're down
five. Like it's it's very justlike it's it's almost like I feel like
it's like it's it's a slow deathyeah yeah on other teams. And I
think when you factor in that andthe way the guys are going on the
mound and the defense is playing threenothing is going to feel like six nothing
in that other Because we've all beenthere at some point, whether we're announcing
(30:47):
the game or playing in the game, you've been there where it's like we're
in this game, but man doesit it feels like it's a huge hill
to climb. Yeah, And thenyou get like the Waldly homer in the
eighth where it's like, all right, well now we're dolfin Nils. Yeah,
coffin nails with the Patriot home run. Yeah, shout out my man,
Mitch barnehard Now I don't know theman was losing it. We were
(31:10):
all fired up. That was awesome. Did you guys have to try to
keep Johnny Hummel in the bullpen becausehe was climbing that fence on the home
run. After he was like,Johnny, were you climbing the wall?
He's like, yeah, like Iclimbed. He was losing gosh, that
was awesome. I was literally Iran down to go to the bathroom.
(31:30):
I come out of the bathroom,I'm on the step about to run down,
and then Pete gets up and Iwas like, I'm just gonna wait.
One more hitter. Yeah, allof a sudden whammy. I was
like, no way. And thenI see I look over and Johnny's literally
on top of the fence, likeover it. I was like, oh
my gosh. The best part.I didn't even know if that ball was
gone. I was working too high. Yeah, yeah, I was.
(31:52):
I think everybody was talking to thatbaseball, especially in our shout. I
think Coach ro yelling at it fromlike inside, but uh yeah, I
mean when he when that left theyard, I think, I think everybody
except cool head Ammo, and there'sjust like yeah I Coach Amo just standing
there with his arms crossed. Okay, I gotta ask. You know,
(32:14):
obviously this is awesome, right,Regional's going on craziest time the year,
mister Darren Hendrick. Yep, Wellwe're recruiting, right, I mean the
transfer portal opened up yesterday. Youspeak a little bit about your results experience
in the portal last year, andyou know obviously we're going to lose a
lot. But just as like atransfer, what does coming to Kentucky really
(32:37):
mean? Because all three of usobviously did it. I want to speak
first. You got it, yougot it. I think for me,
my experience in the portal was veryhectic. I didn't like I ended up
coming in because of a coaching change. Like I loved my time at Sinzi.
I loved it there. I lovethe guys. Everything about it I
loved, and I think it wasjust a time for me to move on.
(33:00):
And so when I got in,like I was getting a lot of
I remember talking to first. Iremember talking to Griffin Marrit, who ended
up playing at UH Tennessee, andI was like, hey, like,
what should I do, Like I'mkind of in the same situation as you
last year, and he was like, just go in. Like due to
(33:20):
the coaching change, you can kindof you can go back if you want.
You can wait and see, likeit gives you kind of like a
breather to kind of say like, hey, like let's just see what happens.
Ended up doing that, and likethe first day, I remember I
was on vacation with my girlfriend inJersey, and uh, I'm just getting
calls like yeah, nonsense. Ididn't really anticipate. I was like it
was kind of you were at thebeach and I'm like, I'm sorry,
(33:42):
like I have to take Yeah,he's called. And so then I ended
up, you know, I endedup going to play like summer ball for
like a couple of weeks, andI'm still getting a bunch of calls and
I end up getting a text onTwitter maybe or something from coach Kuzi,
who I knew was a scout inthe Louisvoe area for like the Tigers and
(34:04):
the Rays, and he was somethingthat I had a relationship prior to,
so he was someone that I kindof like trusted that I was like,
okay, like you know, someof these coaches that you're talking to.
You're talking to a lot of coachesand they're all like, you know,
they're they're just feeding, you know, They're just they want you to feel
good and stuff. And I've beenrecruited before. You know, I'm an
older guy, so it's like Iknow what it feels like to be you
(34:25):
know, your tires pumped. AndI'm just like all right, well and
coach Becuz he's just you know, give me this spiel about it, and
I really liked it. I thinkI also got, you know, the
talk from Ryder, who I playedagainst a bunch in the American Conference,
and he's like, listen, likeyou'd fit imperfect at first, Like I
know how you play. I've watchedit for four years. Like I also
(34:47):
knew seth Log. I played againsthim and played with him, and he
was like, yeah, Kentucky wouldbe a great option, like the first
base would be perfect for you.And all these voices are telling me to
go to UK. Like my brotheris a senior year I'm still close to
home. Yeah, like and thencoach Coozy just you know, when you
talked to me, I was like, yeah, it sounds good, let's
(35:07):
do it. Let's do it.What about you? So for me it
was kind of a little bit different. I entered the portal kind of not
knowing what was gonna happen. Oneof those things where I know I didn't
have a good year, right andI had to kind of prove myself in
summer ball. And so first dayI went in, I got a few
(35:29):
calls, not many from like bigschools and stuff like that. Weeks go
by, I was like, really, still not getting much. So I'm
playing summer ball. I throw,I'm doing like really well, like oh
Claire Northwoods okay yep. Ended upthrowing. I had like a two five
ERA with like thirty six punch outsand twenty innings. Yeah, so not
(35:51):
bad at all. And then Iwas like still not getting anything. And
then u ab hits me up Universityof Alabama, Birmingham, and I like,
I was like one of my buddiesfrom summer balls ended going there.
I was like, you know, what, how do you like it?
He's like I like it. He'slike it's not bad. He's like,
he's like, if that's somewhere youwant to go, you could definitely.
He's like, you'll probably be oneof the weekend starters. I was like,
(36:13):
okay, awesome talk to him.Actually got it along really well with
the pitching coach talks with their likeanalytics guy, and then I ended up
verbally committing yeah. And while thatprocess is going down with UAB, I
texted Ammo because I saw he followedme on Twitter, and I was like,
texted him and I was like, hey, coach, anytime we could,
any chance we could talk, Andso me and Emmo ended up talking
(36:34):
went like unbelievably well talked to Rosellewent amazing, and then they were like,
hey, we just need to getif guys get drafted and the spot
opens up, like we'd love tohave you. And I said, well,
if that happens, like I'm committingto Kentucky. And this is right
before I committed to u a B. And UAB gave me the deadline of
the day of the draft and Iwas like, all right, well,
(36:59):
I guess I'm gonna have to committo you a B because if that if
it doesn't go through with Kentucky.I got nowhere right, So I committed
to U a B. And thenliterally two days after the draft, I
get a call from Mozelle. Pleasedon't don't just give me thing. Yeah,
He's like, please just hear meout, and I was like,
okay, So I talked to himone more time. I talked to mine
(37:20):
and I was like, yeah, let's do it. I like connected with
Mane just with everything, especially faithbased and with Roselle. I just love
the way he coached. And Iwas like, yeah, this is this
is the spot for me. We'reabout to get a new handful of him.
That's right, no doubt. We'repumped. Uh, that's right.
We're pumped to interview some more ofthem boys. But yeah, thank you
