(00:08):
Hello everybody, Welcome back to thesecond bonus episode of Behind the Wand first
things first, thank you so muchto everyone who messaged saying they enjoyed the
first bonus episode. That was reallyreally lovely to hear. Obviously, it's
the first thing I've done where it'sjust been me speaking with no guests,
(00:30):
so I was really nervous, butso many of you sent me really lovely
messages, which has made me feelreally really good about the bonus episode,
and that is why we're back foranother one. I'm hoping you will also
notice that the sound quality should bea bit better, as I have invested
in a microphone at long last.It has taken me about an hour to
(00:54):
try and work out how to actuallyget it to work, but hopefully that
hour is worthwhile and you will enjoylistening more as the audio should sound a
lot better. And also, lastly, before I get into answering your questions
and get going with this episode, sorry the episode is out a bit late.
It was my birthday yesterday and Iwas going to record, and then
(01:15):
the day just sort of got awayfrom me and I was spending time with
my family, so I'm having torecord on Friday, so I'm hoping this
is coming out Friday night, butif not, it'll be out Saturday morning.
So future Flick, I don't knowwhen she's getting that and getting this
episode out, But anyway, let'scrack on again. You have said so
(01:38):
many brilliant questions and they make melaugh. Somebody asked me about why Hermione
changed her hair parting from the fourthfilm on which I don't know, so
I can't answer that one, butit did make me laugh. The things
that people notice and are curious about. But today I'm going to be answering
(01:59):
a little bit about get paid.I'm going to be answering a little bit
about photos and taking photos whilst we'refilming. I'm going to be answering talking
about the casting process and how Igot cast, also about taking things from
set, and then lastly a littlebit about the new Harry Potter. So
hopefully that all sounds good, andlet's just get straight into it With the
(02:23):
first question, which was about gettingpaid. The person who sent this in
wasn't actually asking me to be superspecific about how much I got paid.
They were just asking whether I wasfinancially compensated for working on the film which
I was. I'm not going togo into too much detail about the exact
amount, but it obviously wasn't asmuch as Dan Rupert and Emma. It
(02:46):
wasn't sort of life changing money thatI'd never have to work again, but
it was a really decent amount. And obviously, being ten years old and
getting paid like anything'sht a lot.So I obviously got paid. My mum
obviously got paid when she came asa chaperone, and our pay was actually
the same. I thought. Whatwas interesting as well was I didn't get
(03:06):
paid per film. It was literallya daily rate, so every day I
worked, I got paid. SoI had an agent who would sort that
out and sort of invoice for thedays that I worked. She obviously took
I think ten percent, maybe fifteenpercent of whatever I earned for getting me
the job. On a film, you also get paid for sort of things
(03:28):
that you might not expect. Soif you got your hair cut or had
something changed to your hair, you'dget a bit of extra money. If
you did a stunt, you'd getextra money. I'm not sure how that
works with stunt doubles, but ifI did anything that was sort of remotely
in the realm of stunts, whichI think if you've heard me talk before,
I did a jump once, whichwas a bit stunty, my first
(03:50):
and last stunt that I did Asmione, and I also did some testing of
like riding the hippogriff and those sortsof things you get paid extra for.
If you're away on location, youget per diems, which is sort of
money for each day for food andextra things that you might need, because
(04:11):
obviously, like I said in lastweek's episode, I was talking about having
breakfast and lunch at the studios, but dinner you have obviously you'd have at
home, but when you're on location, you're not going home. You're eating
in the hotel or at a localpub or restaurant or something. And they
would give us money for that, which always was way more than you would
need just for a meal, sothat could add up quite nicely. I
(04:33):
mean, it'll be no surprise toyou that film is like a big money
business, and Warner Brothers definitely paidus fairly and paid us well. And
yeah, that money obviously was allput into an account, and you know,
I've used bits of it for Iwent traveling for a year when I
was twenty four, so I usedsome of it for that. I actually
(04:57):
gave some to my brother and sisterand they did a bit of traveling and
they've done some stuff and we've donesome family holidays with it. So that
just gives you an idea of sortof, like I said, I'm not
a millionaire, but that's you know, it was enough to be able to
afford those sorts of things and stillhave a little bit more left over.
So yeah, I hope that sortof answers that question. And I'm not
(05:17):
being too frustrating not disclosing an actualamount, but it just feels like,
I don't know, maybe it's veryBritish, but it feels like not the
thing to do, to go intolike nitty gritty. But I think that
gives you an idea of how wewere financially compensated, and I think pretty
much most doubles were the same.I don't think there was like huge disparity
and like who gets paid what.Like I said, it was a daily
(05:38):
rate, so if you're in more, obviously you'd end up getting paid more.
But I don't think it was likebig negotiations. I think there was
just a standard amount for that role. Which we all sort of got paid,
right. So that's question one, done and dusted. Question two so
this is asked by Blabs Blabs withsomebody I absolutely love. I've been on
her what's a YouTube channel side scrollers, but I've been on their show,
(06:01):
and Blabs is a huge Harry Potterfan and just like a totally fantastic person.
So, hey, Blabs, youasked about having lots of pictures from
my time working on Harry Potter, and I do. It's a funny one
because they were really really strict onus taking pictures. They actually, especially
when we were in costume and wewere working, you weren't really meant to
(06:23):
take pictures. But saying that, when we were on the first film,
we were all gifted cameras by ChrisColumbus. I think it might have been
for Christmas or like a Thanksgiving gift. I can't remember exactly, but he
gave all of us cameras, whichI thought was a weird choice of that,
if you don't want us to betaking pictures, maybe don't gift us
cameras. They were I mean, this is so old, but they it
(06:46):
was how long ago it was? They were tiny, little silver cameras,
which you know, film cameras, like you had to get a film for,
not digital or anything like that. That is how far back we're going.
So naturally we did take pictures.I think you've probably seen on my
Instagram there are obviously pictures of mein costume and when we were actually filming
at the studios. Outside of filming, we were obviously free to take as
(07:08):
many pictures as possible as possible,as many picture as possible, not as
possible, as many pictures as welike of what we were doing. I
think there was probably a bit ofsensitivity around like Dan Rupert Emma and when
they're having downtime and obviously pictures takingpictures of them and where they'd go,
but saying that there was no socialmedia, so no one was going out
(07:28):
taking pictures putting them on Instagram orFacebook or anything like that. You literally
had pictures, like I said,on a film camera, got them printed
and put them in a photo album. So that's all where my Harry Potter
memories are are in photo albums, and you know, I love looking back
through them. I'm going to actuallyput up some I've put up a few
here and there, but I'm goingto put some more up because I went
(07:49):
through the other day and found loadsof good ones and my friend told her
who was the Harry Double. Harrystunt Double actually sent me a picture the
other day that he found in hisloft a Ron double. Also, this
is like last year or something sentme a picture from when we were filming
in Scotland. So it's really niceand people you know that sort of not
(08:09):
that I've lost contact with, butI don't talk to all the time,
but I have on Instagram occasionally, like they'll send pictures that they stumble across,
and I try and do the same. If I stumble across a funny
picture, I try and locate whoeverit is and send it to them,
like I had loads of when meand Emma used to do a dance class
together with a dance instructor called Holly, and I actually reconnected to with her
(08:30):
on Instagram recently and I've sent hersome of the pictures from the dance class
because I think it's just nice toreceive those if you don't have them,
just to keep keepers memories. Soyeah, I'm going to try and put
up some more pictures on Instagram.I always have a bit of fear still
though I shouldn't do it, andthat Warner Brothers are going to just come
and like shut this down. ButI think it's okay. And like I
said, Chris Columbus gave us acamera in that first film, So if
(08:54):
you don't want pictures taken, don'tgive us a camera. So that's quite
two now. Question three. Severalpeople asked about this. This is probably
the most asked question this week wasabout the casting process for me. So
it began with, like I said, I had an agent. But that
(09:16):
sounds a lot more glamorous than itactually is. Well that it actually was
for me. I went to anafter school drama class when I was in
sort of primary school, and thewoman there who ran the drama class would
go and just do like improv andlittle skits and it was just, you
know, something, There was nota serious anything serious in it. For
(09:37):
me. It was literally just afun club and something fun to do after
school. But the woman said,oh, I run a little agency and
said to my mom, if youget me some pictures of Flick, I
you know, could possibly put herforward for auditions if anything comes my way.
My mum really didn't think that muchof it. Took a few snaps
of me in the garden and gavethem to her. And literally the first
(09:58):
thing that I was ever asked auditionfor was Harry Potter. They'd already cast.
I never, like I said before, like I'd never auditioned for Hermione.
I had nothing to do with HarryPotter. Those guys had all been
cast and then they looked for thedoubles. And I think the reason she
had a really small agency, butthe reason why Harry Potter got in contact
(10:18):
is for when they were casting forall the main cast, they were literally
looking for children all over the UK, So they were really in touch with
all the agencies, no matter howbig or small, all across the UK
looking for kids to be in thefilm. So I think that's how they
stumbled across the woman who was myagent, and they just asked me to
come in. So I went intoLeaves and Studios and I think there was
(10:41):
probably about five or six girls, maybe five, and Dan Rupert and Emma
were there, and they literally justtook us onto one of the sound stages
and they had a set which Idon't even think was a Harry Potter set.
It was almost just like a livingroom. It was nothing Harry Potter
related, but they just wanted usto stand there under the studio the like
(11:03):
the set lights and look at usthrough a camera. I know that sounds
really weird because obviously you can justlook at us normally, but I think
it was just looking through the cameralens and seeing how similar we looked.
So the first thing is I metEmma and they looked at us and they
said, like, stand next toeach other, look to the right,
look to the left, to turnaround, and just to look at how
our height, our hair, ourjawline. I think those are the sorts
(11:26):
of things that are important for adouble. If you're filming over the shoulder,
I think a jawline's really important.You've got a similar sort of it's
a chin look, and like Isaid, your hair, and obviously like
height and a body shape have tohave to be similar. So they did
that with Emma. Then they tookEmma out and actually brought down and rupert
(11:46):
in and just had me line upwith them again, just to see that
it looked believable that I could beEmma. If they're like you know,
a lot of the times they're filmingover Hermione's shoulder when she's like talking to
Harry Ron. So they sort oflike looked at that. Oh, I've
got to say. So it wassort of Chris Columbus, David Hayman,
(12:07):
John Seele was the director of photography, but he was operating the camera.
Oh, j Mino, since Iwas looking to him. He was there.
It was like a lot of peoplewho were to do with early production,
so producers and then heads of departments, so hair and makeup were also
there, and wardrobe were there. So once they sort of so once like
David Hayman and Chris Columbus and JohnSeale had sort of looked at us and
(12:28):
said, yep, that kind ofworks. Then we went over to hair,
who then actually looked at our hairand what it was like and whether
they were able to be able toget as similar to Emma's. I think
my natural hair color is quite similarto Emma's, so that was fine.
And then the same with wardrobe againjust looking at our shape and size,
whether they thought that would pass withthe costumes, that we would look similar
(12:50):
enough. And can I say, whilst this was happening, they gave no
sign of whether they were like thiswas positive or negative. They just literally
didn't make any comments about it.So the whole time I'm doing this,
I've got no idea whether they're thinkingI'm a good match or a bad match,
and saying with the other girls, you know, we were all no
one knew what they were what theywere thinking. They were just moving us
(13:13):
through from department to department. Thenthey told us to go and wait in
the canteen, and then I can'treally remember, because obviously they did come
over to me and say, oh, yeah, we'd love you to literally
that so they said like, yeah, we'd love you to join join the
production. We'd love you to beHermione's double. I'm not sure what they
said to the other girls. Weobviously weren't sitting together. We were all
sort of separately with whoever had comewith them, So my mum came with
(13:35):
me, so I'm not sure.I'm not sure what happened to the other
girls. I actually went to schoolwith a girl who auditioned. She was
in the year below me. Hername was Stephanie, but she didn't get
she she didn't get the part. She was just she was there, so
I don't know. She never saidwhat they said to her. And obviously
we never spoke about it, butyeah, they sorry. I thought there
(13:58):
was a perhaps want to come intothe recording then, and it was Chris
Correris, who was the first assistantdirector, just talked us through sort of
what the commitment would be and thesort of stuff I would be doing.
I think they originally said it's goingto be about twelve weeks. I think
they just say that to you soif it doesn't work out, they can
get rid of you. But obviouslyfor me it ended up being three and
(14:22):
a half years of my life, almost four I think in the end.
So yeah, and they all said, we'll send you a contract, and
then you need to get a license. I think I spoke about this a
little bit last time. I can'tremember whether I did or not. But
you have to get a license towork, So you have to have signed
off medical and your school has tosay it's okay, and all these sorts
(14:45):
of things to get a license towork. And the license will last I
don't know, like ninety days maybe, and then you have to keep renewing
it. So they told us allabout that and then so we'll be in
contact. And then that was inthe all. And then the next thing
I knew obviously got my license. That was all fine. And then next
(15:05):
thing I knew, they called mymum saying we're going up to Newcastle tomorrow
to start shooting, so we needto be at the airport at sort of
six am the next day. Thatis how last minute it was. Me
and my mum had to do amad dash to the shopping center just to
get me like a few bits. And this is always really funny is that
we went and we bought like agap fleece hoodie. I feel like if
(15:26):
you're two, an early two thousandsteenager, you will know about this,
this gap fleece iconic. You couldget it in like every single color.
And what was funny is that whenme and Emma turned up at the airport,
we were both wearing the exact samepink, like bright pink gap fleece
jumper. And I always remember thatthat we were like, hey, great
style and obviously looking very similar, which was which was great. But also
(15:52):
what was so funny is when we'reat the airport traveling up and then we
got a coach the other side ticksto the hotel. No one really knew
who anybody was, so you didn'teven know who what characters people were.
It was like, who's this personplaying? Who's this person playing? Is
this person a double? Is thisperson? Trying to sort that all out?
There is a cat in here? One second I thought I could hear
a cat. Yeah, So that'show I how I got cast. I'm
(16:19):
not sure if it was the samefor every double. I think people I
like stunt doubles and stuff were scoutedfrom gyms and stuff like that. But
that's how I got the part asHermione's double. Next question, did I
take anything from the set? Now? Again, I get so scared even
(16:40):
saying this. I don't know,Like, Oh, Warner Brothers, do
they listen to this podcast? Doesanyone from Warner Brothers listen to this podcast?
I hope not? Well not,I hope not. But if you
do, sorry that I did steal. I don't like to say steal.
There wasn't anything like that couldn't bereplaced. A few things like quills and
a few little like parchment bits andthings that i'd done a lot of the
(17:02):
time when we're filming classroom scenes, they would like give you parchment and just
you do don and just pretend you'reright, especially Hermione like furiously writing notes,
so stuff like that I had.But I'd say the worst thing I
took, or the thing that Ireally shouldn't have taken, which I did,
was in the in the first film, before they are sorted into their
(17:26):
houses, they all have a plainblack tie as part of their school uniform
with the Hogwarts Quest on its obviouslythey don't know what house they're in,
and then once they're sorted, itmagically turns into whatever colors of the house
you've been sorted into. And Itook that black tie, which you know,
(17:47):
I just thought it was really cooland you know, something that not
a lot of people would have, and why is it? It's also with
arties there. The Hogwarts quest wasall like beautifully embroidered on it, but
with the extras it was like aniron on patch. So it was like
a really beautiful tie with like thisembroidered Hogwarts crest. And yeah, and
(18:08):
once we'd finished shooting that, likewe knew we wouldn't go but it wasn't
something I'd need after that we'd needafter that scene because then obviously Hermione's wearing
the gruffinda tie all the time.So as soon as that scene was done,
I did take that tie, andyou know, I'm glad I took
stuff because they're my memories. I'vegot so many boxes off my loft and
I do love getting them down andlooking through them because it just, like
(18:32):
I said, just brings back suchgood memories and they're really special things to
me. And I have other stufflike in my house. I've got like
posters up. I've got a lotof the movie posters that are all signed
and have like really personal messages tome on which means a lot. I've
got all my call sheets, I'vegot scripts, a lot of pictures.
(18:56):
Whilst we're filming, there was likea lot of T shirts and stuff that
you get, and a lot ofthem were like the baseball style, like
like three quarter lengthsle T shirts andit would say like Potter two or whatever,
you know, if it was twothousand and two, two one oh
three whatever. And then each departmentalso had sort of their own T shirts
and stuff. So I've got likea really cool like Prisoner of Azkaban fleece,
(19:22):
which yeah, you know, justthat sort of stuff's like really really
cool. But that isn't taken thatwas stuff I was actually allowed to have.
But like I said, I've justgot like boxes and boxes. I'll
try and get some pictures of theT shirts and the department stuff so you
can see, like, actually,i'm looking now on the back of my
bedroom door, I've got like astunt Harry Potter like stunt jacket, which
(19:44):
like a little bomber jacket. Soyeah, if you're interested, I'll try
and get some pictures of some ofthose like department tops and stuff that they
created. They obviously design them themselvesand make and then you could get those.
Gosh. I feel like last timeI talked about ages, I'm flying
through this week. Am I givingenough detail? I don't know. And
(20:08):
then the last question is this isfrom Don Weatherall, and he asked about
my thoughts on casting for the newHarry Potter series and if in my mind
I had anybody that I thought wouldbe good for each for different characters,
and I actually don't really. Ifeel like I saw somewhere that someone said
that Helen Mirren would be a goodMcGonagall, and I kind of agree,
(20:30):
like she would be great because she'sjust great in everything. She's a great
actor. But I don't know. It's so hard. I find it really
hard to think of other people beingthe characters that we know and love.
Like I can't imagine like a differentHagrid or a Dumbledore or a Snape or
even like a Harry Ron Hermione.I can't even imagine somebody else being those
(20:56):
parts. But you know, I'msure when it happens, the people they
cast will be absolutely brilliant and wewill love them. But it just feels
like so weird to think of that. I saw somewhere else that somebody had
said that they'd like Tom Felton tocome back as like Lucius Malfoy, and
maybe things like that, like acouple of the old cast coming back and
playing roles. I'm not sure likewhether I feel like such a big role
(21:22):
would be. I don't know whetheri'd like that, but I hope they
do do some easter eggs, youknow, when there's like little you know
they might be cast as like asmaller part, or you know, there's
little easter eggs of the original filmsthat they've put in through the series,
because I feel like I really lovethat in a film, you know,
when they did it in I don'tknow if anyone's seen the series The Last
(21:45):
of Us, and you know, people who were voices and they use they
like scanned for the game then appearedin the series. So it wasn't like,
oh my god, that's that person. But if you knew, if
you know, you know, andI really enjoy that sort of thing where
you're like, oh, that's thegirl from the game is actually playing her
mom in it. I was like, I personally love that. But what
(22:07):
I thought would be really fun isif you let me know if you've got
anybody in your head that you thinkwould be good for certain parts, and
then we can like discuss it onepisodes and we can read out like the
good ones, and then we cansee if we get any of them right
as well, which would be exciting. So that's this week's bonus episode of
(22:27):
questions. Like I said, Ikeep all your questions, So if you've
sent one in and I haven't answeredit this week, I'm really sorry,
but I might answer it next week. You know, I'd love to he
answer really all of them, andhopefully we will get through like a lot
of them. But I said, like, really, luckily I get sent
so many lovely questions, which isso lovely because it means people are listening,
(22:48):
it'll be a bit sad if Ijust got one question. That's this
week's episode. I hope you've enjoyedit. On Tuesday, we have the
regular episode going out, which isTim Burke was head of visual Effects,
so interesting. He was the visualeffects supervisor from the Chamber of Secrets through
to you know, he even didFantastic Beasts, so there was nothing he
(23:11):
didn't know about Harry Potter and visualeffects. So he was really really great
to speak to and I think youguys are going to absolutely love that.
So yeah, tune in on Tuesday, and I will see you back with
the Burundus episode next Friday. Ipromise it won't be late. It will
be on time this time, andI love you all right,
