The 1995 World Series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3. Jay Dawg and CJ chat it up, as Atlanta looks to take a 3-0 series lead.

In this edition of the Playback, Jadagg and CJ look
back on Game three of the nineteen ninety five World
Series as the Atlanta Braves face the Cleveland Indians on
October twenty fourth, nineteen ninety five from Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Just its second year of existence. Jacobs Field, now Progressive Field,
hosts the World Series. Forty one years for Cleveland to
host a World siege. That's crazy.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
That's two generations, you know, back in the like the
seventeen hundreds, that was like a lifetime ripe old age
of forty one.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
And we've got surpassed a great, incredible lineup here again
this time by the way. Yeah, broadcast, Yes, has your
one of your favorites?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
We again, we didn't have We didn't segue two. We
only segue to the city. Yeah, we go from Atlanta
to Cleveland. Same broadcast team here in Game three, right
on NBC, right the Baseball Network, Bob Costas, Joe Morgan,
mister Baseball, Bob Yucker. Those two are no longer with us.
Those two are Hall of famers. All three are actually
Hall of famers. Costas for the Fort Sea Freck Wing

of the Hall of Fame, as is mister Baseball Bob
Yucker and Joe Morgan in as a player for the
Cincinnati Reds.

Yeah, and the the graphics here NBC doing a great
job where me and Jay Dogg are both big NBC folks.

Correct, I'm going to NBC in the summer next year,
that's the big news. I'm gonna tour thirty rock Radio

show because again they're gonna be dark, So Fallon's gonna
be probably somewhere in New Hampshire. And Seth Myers, who's
from New Hampshire, he'll probably be somewhere. So that way,

Chuck Naggy, by the way, Connecticut's own a New Englander
by the way.

Love that, you know, it's funny. Maybe you can give
your thoughts on this, but I've always thought, you know,
growing up New Englanders, Yeah, they don't get along with
other New Englanders really well. New Hampshire people are very like, well,
you're not from New Hampshire. You're from Maine, or you're
from or you're from Massachusettsachusetts. New Hampshire is a border war.
That's a big border war. But I'm saying like, in general,

we're very proud people here in New England, and we're
all proud of the states we're from.

There are some people that don't consider Connecticut New England.

I know, New York, I know it's it's uh. I
understand that a lot of the fan bases are New
York fans in Connecticut, but I still Connecticut's New England
New England. Yeah, it feels yeah. But so my point
being is, we're all proud from New England. But when
I lived down south, the people I got along with

the most, Yeah, we're all from New England. I love
New Englanders. They were. Yeah, it wasn't no, we all
and and of course because we come from.

Southern hospitality is in theory.

Yeah, that's true that if you're not Southern, you don't
get the hospitality. So that's why they call it Southern hospitality. Yeah,

I'm gonna be kind of rooting for Naggy. I feel
like in this game, especially Grissom leads off for the Braves.

game three of them out to say five World Series.
This is Chuck Naggi versus John Smoltz. We get the
third guy. Yeah, I know, of the Big three. I'm
excited that I'm rooting for Naggy.

Uh. I was about to say it just as you
said it, because I want to see Cleveland try and
get one here and keep it a competitive series. They're
at home first time, you know, in forty one years
they've been able to host a World.

Series and only their second year at the time. Jacob's
Field now Progressive Field.

Did you ever get to go to Jacob's Field? Were
you ever able to attend that? When did it become
Progressive two thousand and eight? And so that was like
before you ever got to go out there. Okay. My
graduation present for Conquered High School was supposed to be
this is from my dad, was supposed to be, as
Grissom has it right till Lofton, So fellow outfielder, first

out fellow speedsmen who would be traded for each other
in ninety seven. By the way, my graduation present was
going to be Cleveland, the weekend series against the Saint
Louis cardinalsoo and Pooholes was a rookie that year. Ooh,

This was two thousand and one. Okay, well the present
never happens, and I am just crushed. Yeah, I was
gonna finally go out there. We're gonna go on the
bus and bus are away to Cleveland for a weekend
series against the Saint Louis Cardinals. McGuire hits a grand

slam in one of the games. Jim Tomy hits a
walk off.

Oh my gosh.

Boles hits a tape measure shot in one of the games.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Oh my god. Yeah, that's brutal. Yeah, so you never
got to make it to Jacob's field, then I take it,
no from that story.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Not from Jacob.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
No. Now, when it became Progressive Field, it's a it's
the same field essentially, right, Like I mean, there's probably
been some changes.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
It's a lot of adjustments. Yeah, a lot of a
lot of construction updates on the like out two down, excuse.

Me, Polonia is out.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
He grounds out and I don't go until twenty eighteen.
My best friend, it's Jim Tomy weekend. I missed out
seeing him play in Cleveland, So you know what, why
don't you go see him get retired with his number
and everything.

That was your first time going to Yeah to Progressive
was twenty eighteen.

Twenty eighteen. Wow, Chipper Jones at the dish. Yeah, that's crazy.
I didn't get to Cleveland until the year twenty eighteen.

That's crazy, I see because I've known you for probably
like almost two years now three years about yes, And
I could have sworn you had been married before that,
Like you could have. You could have convinced me otherwise,
you're obviously such a huge fan.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
I could have lied and said that, Yeah, no, I'm.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Chipper lays one down in between. That's a double. Oh
it's off the wall. Yeah, and Kenny gets it into
the cutoff, stand up.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Way, clean uni for Chipper Jones. YEP. One of the
best bats in Atlanta's lineup and obviously a rookie this season.
I mean, what an impressive player though he can't hate
and that's the thing I think Red Sox fans grow
up that way. But I think it's also just baseball
fans in general are very app to tip their cap

to to talent. I feel like in other sports rivalries,
I mean, obviously Red Sox fans aren't ever really going
to compliment Yankees fans, and there's rivalries are still going
to be rivalries. But the crime dog Fred McGriff at
the dish tipping your hat to like, good play, Chipper Jones,
great player, Like he's been incredible in this series so far.
He had that one blunder I think in what game one,

on the game two, he had an error in the field,
but then he made the final put away on a
speedy Kenny Lofton or something like that, and it was like,
I mean, great, great play.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
In one of the innings. It wasn't yeah, yeah, not
the end.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
The game, like one of the one of the later outs,
Like after he made that error, it was a key,
key play. He had to make a tough throw on
one of the fastest guys in the league. McGriff.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
This I believe was a Tuesday in nineteen ninety five,
if I remember correctly, Yes, Saturday Game one, Sunday Game two,
travel day.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
To Cleveland and then Tuesday Game three, McGriff lays one
in and that's probably gonna score Chipper.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah, there he is one nothing.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
One nothing in a clean Atlanta uniform. No one has
had to get dirty yet with two down. Yes, that's
that's a thing that I think most good teams, or
some of the what divides the great teams from good
teams is two out hitting. I think two out hitting
is so important when you it's it's that clutch factor

that can't really be measured. This is probably the closest
thing you can measure to. It is how good a
team does with two outs with their back against the
wall essentially, and Chipper Jones, I mean, comes through clutch,
gets on base, McGriff drives them home, easy money. Justice
now Dave Justice at the DO and it just doesn't
get any easier. It's just gonna it's gonna continue to
be a tough outing here for Cleveland of the although

David Justice two eighty six two RBIs he's two for
four so far. I mean, he's all right. He wasn't
batting that hot throughout the postseason in general, but he's
doing all right right right now.

In the he's not the hottest bad but he doesn't
need to be Yea. So Naggi has a six point
two eight e r A in the first inning of
games and has a four point I think it was

I could have guessed that Bell and Belle and Viscale

World Series again this year as the Los Angeles Dodge
Jays take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the World

Series for Fox and LA trying to repeat, whereas Toronto
trying to win their first World Series since last time
they got there nineteen ninety three.

season also mad Bums were and so was Buster Posey
Posy the dynasty that started for the Giants when they
won that in five games?

Mad But was that was Lynsicam on the team then? Yes?
Oh yeah, that was a solid Giants team.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Yeah, Sonny, I picked them to win in spring training
over the Minnesota Tweans in five games. So I got
the wrong. I got the wrong ex Washington Senators franchise.
It was the Texas Rangers instead, And that's funny. So
in spring training I said the Giants are gonna win
the World Series in five games, and you're.

Like, nah, Sometimes I feel like us US folks that
work in the sports media world, sometimes you can just
I don't know about you, but like the year the
Eagles won the World or the Super Bowl, excuse me,
the first time I had made a bet with my boss.
It's I've talked about this story a lot, but I
may He ended up wearing a two two because we

bet whoever. He bet the Patriots would have a better
season than the Eagles. Like week one, like first minute
of the season.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Kenny Lofton leading off bought of the first for Cleveland
in Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
And week two, U and I bet that the Eagles
would have a better season than the Patriots, and he
bet that the Patriots had have a better season. They
ended up beating They faced each other in the Super Bowl,
which was crazy. The odds that that happened were probably astronomical,
Like if I had guessed that at the beginning of
the season, but I just knew the Eagles had it
in him that season, Like and I could tell before
the season even started. You can just get almost like

a feeling, Kenny Lofton, fouls went off, by the way,
And I don't know if you're like that, if you
if you've you know, like when you predicted that, did
you have just like some sort of feeling like beforehand,
like almost I.

Heard about Buster Posey the pitching rotation was not too shabby,
So Bruce Bochie I think was you know.

You never go with intuition though, you go with like
just a feeling. Yeah, yeah, that's all I feel that.

I trust my gut a lot, which is probably why
I started off that this this season one in five

Not Cleveland. No, that's by the way, old Cleveland Stadium.
Why it was so spacious it was built for the
nineteen thirty six I believe they were trying to get
the nineteen thirty six Olympics and they didn't get it.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
That's crazy. I've always thought of that, like when they, yeah,
when they build stadiums and stuff like that for events
and then it doesn't happen. It's like and we wasted.
What Now we have this giant concrete like monument. What
are we gonna do with it? Exactly? Or it's like
even just old stadiums in general, like the Sonics, I mean,

like the Seattle Super Sonics until I mean, I don't
know if the crack.

And Arena they've essentially built around it. It's because you
know why the Sonics moved, right, Why because David Stern,
the commissioner of the NBA at the time, said you
got to get a new venue or you got to.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Move the real quick. Kenny Lofton, I believe they haven't
shown it yet. I think you still no, you didn't
steal second. It looked like you took Okay, Nope, you
were saying.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
They said you got to build a new venue or
you got to go because at the time, again, the
Key Arena is one of the oldest venues in the
NBA and and not modern.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
You got to be modern, right, But even then, like
so when when the Sonics left. It was just like
they just had this stadium sitting there and and I
mean there's arena arenas and stadiums that are are still up,
like right there, lotu bro when I Skell's a oh,

Lofton's gone. Yeah right, yeah, I just eat it. If
I'm the if I'm the cutoff man, that was a
triple safe, there was a triple Yeah if a SkELL
got a triple wow, Okay, it's a solid hit. No outs.

Yeah, the camera couldn't keep up with it. I know
the camera was doing where Lofton was running and where
the ball was going. They kept it on Lofton before
they went where the ball was. I was crazy.

We got a tie ball game. I'm surprised. Smoltz looks
not that good. I mean, not a good start to
hit zero outs, Lofton's already come home, and you got
a guy on third pass ball, pop fly, anything's gonna
give the give Cleveland the lead. Yeah, Oh my gosh.

You have to go to this field. You have.

I want to see every every baseball fap to go
to put this arena. This place is great. I go
every year. Yes, Well, that's why I thought you had
been before twenty eighteen is because I know how frequently
you go. Now I know, and obviously you're a Cleveland diehard.

When I turned forty, I made the solemn vow that
I would go to every home opener, and I so
far I missed out.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
I wanted.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
I was trying to go to the twenty twenty two
but remember baseball was on strike. Yes, so instead of
them facing Kansas City.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
That should be a run though, right did he go?

Speaker 3 (16:33):
Scale scores nice with a baseball strike and ended up
being on Robinson Day on April fifteenth. That's cool hosting
the Santa Francisco Giants, But again I couldn't go right.

The timing was thrown off.

Flights and everything became Yeah.

So I've never been to a home opener. I would
love to go. I want to go to as many
stadiums as possible, all of all sports. Like I mean,
I I don't really care love. I love sports so much.
I love the entertainment industry that I want to just
be a part of it, be around it. It's fun
to just be in that atmosphere. I'm so jealous, shouts

out to one of my best men at my wedding
and one of my best friends growing up, Brandon. He
is a software salesman and so he helps install or
he's not like a salesman. He works for a software
sales company and they sell software to sports stadiums so
they can you can buy food from the kiosks and

things like that, and he goes and travels all the time,
gets to see stadiums all the time, sending me videos.
He sent me a video of a giant Super Bowl
trophy the other day. I don't even know where he was,
but I'm just like, man, I'm so jealous, Like I
just want to go to all these places and be
able to step foot into these giant coliseums as we
described in the first two games of the playback Chip

or making a play that's two down on Albert Bell. Yeah, yep,
but yeah, I want to do whatever I can to
get out to these stadiums. I love seeing content creators
that do those like thirty stadiums in thirty days or
something where they try to see like.

Remember, well, if you remember in spring training, right, thirty
clubs and thirty days was what MLB Network used to do.
So they did that way back in like two thousand
and nine ten, Right, thirty clubs and thirty days where
they'd spend half of them in Florida and half of
them in Arizona.

Didn't. NFL didn't, didn't the four letter, four letter big mothership,
the mothership, Yeah, didn't. They used to do like a dish.
They did like an NFL training camp version of that
where they would take the bus during like training camp
to all the different camps. I would even do that too.
I had a great time I went to I know,
you went to Patriots training camp this pasture of twenty

twenty five, right and not? And something I didn't know
is not every team does open training camp, right. The
Philadelphia Eagles my favorite team, they only do I think,
like one practice that's open to the public. Yeah, and
that's going to do it for the inning. But the
Cleveland Indians take the lead.

Going to the second inning to Clusco, Hobby Lopez and
Mark Lemke do up front Atlanta. Is that look at that?

I So what is different about the stadium that you

You know they've changed that, Like, I wouldn't know.

A lot of the green is gone really, like the
green that you see is gone. It's blue essentially.

The backstop is green still. I don't know how much
longer that's gonna be. They may change it to navy blue.

The seating is blue seats now. These cages are gone. Now.
There was a time where a season ticket hollle could
be there and there right what a play get there

as the Indians. Yes, when I went there, I was
right again. I was in back of home play.

So oh nice. Yeah that's cool. Yep, I got to
sit the day game. You can you can catch the

a trip I had seats behind the red Sox, uh
like backstop.

of my life.

Moment and getting picked off at first in a key
moment that was brutal thanks to who was it? That
was Hovey Lopez. So that was basically Manny's saying guess

Yeah? Yeah, but it doesn't matter now. I mean I
think Hovey Lopez is still getting the last laugh at
the moment. Mark Lemke at the dish, come on, make

So one second baseman gets another second basement out.

That's crazy and we're going to the bottom of the
