Episode 23 The Richardson Family Murders

Join Alicia and Sierra from the Twisted and Uncorked podcast as they discuss a case that is beyond bizarre. In 2006, Marc and Debra Richardson and their 8 year old son were found murdered in their home. Their 12 year old daughter was missing. But she was not abducted – she and her 23 year old boyfriend had killed her family and run off together. Jasmine and her boyfriend Jerry Steinke shared a passion for vampires, and both were members of a vampire fan website. They got the idea of murdering Jasmine’s family after watching the movie Natural Born Killers. Jasmine and Jerry were convicted of murdering her family, with Jasmine being the youngest person in Canadian history sent to prison on multiple counts of first-degree murder.

(01:19):
Alicia and I'm Sierra and we arethe hosts of Twisted and Uncorked podcast.
Bizarre and Twisted stories with a doseof comedic relief are our specialty, but
our stories aren't always true crime.Today we are bringing you a true crime
story that is beyond bizarre. Thisis the case of the Richardson murders in

(01:44):
Medicine Hat, Alberta. On Apriltwenty third, two thousand and six,
a young boy in the neighborhood wentto see if his friend, Jacob Richardson
could play. After getting no answerat the front door, he went around
back to see if anyone was awakeYet, when he pequed in a basement
window, he saw the bloody bodiesof Mark and Deborah Richardson. The boy

(02:07):
ran back to his mom and said, there are dead people in Jacob's house.
She went to investigate it for herself. She peeked through the same window
that her son had, and herheart sank. She called nine one one.
Mark Richardson was born into a Catholicfamily and had four sisters. He

(02:28):
was described as a bear of aman with a bushy mustache and dark hair.
Mark met Deborah in nineteen ninety ata jim They were both previously attics
when they met, and they workedstrongly on their sober existence together before starting
their family. The two married inToronto before moving to Alberta. They were

(02:50):
very much in love and supported oneanother no In Alberta, Mark became an
engineer. Deborah was a happy motherwho was interested in Native American spirituality and
raiki, something we are also veryinterested in if you check out our podcast.
Mark and Deborah had two children together. The first was Jasmine, and

(03:15):
Jacob was born four years later.Jacob, who was eight, was known
as the class clown. He wasjust a funny little boy. He was
into hockey and being a Jedi.Oh my God, my heart. He
loved his family and he looked upto his big sister, Jasmine. Jasmine,
who was twelve, was considered tobe a good girl, a good

(03:37):
student, and she loved spending timewith her younger brother. She was into
art and poetry, but as shewas getting older, she started to express
herself differently and became interested in gothascetic She went to a Christian school,
but she started to push the limitsof the dress code. She liked to

(03:58):
wear dark clothes, skirts, chains, chokers, fishnets, darker makeup,
all the cool stuff. We alldid it right, Yeah, of course,
I'm sure she got a daily talkingto as well. I roll.
Her parents wanted to support her expressingherself. They thought she isn't hurting anyone,
just leave her alone. Eventually,Jasmine rebelled more and more. She

(04:25):
pushed curfew. She went to allage punk concerts on the weekends, and
when she was just eleven, shehad signed herself up on social media sites
claiming to be sixteen, with theuser name's x Underscore Madness, Underscore X
and Killer Kitty and Runaway Devil LoveIt. The interests that she posted on

(04:50):
her page included hatchets, blood,Moonlight, crime stories, and kinky shit.
I like moonlight also and crime stories, Hey yeah, and crime stories.
Her heroes listed were Jeffrey Dahmer,Batman, Chris Angel, and Marilyn

(05:13):
Manson. Okay, yeah, it'sgetting a little too far. Yeah,
it's a little extra. All ofit was just a silly rebellion that I'm
sure we can all relate to,even if it's extremely cringey to know that
we lived that way once upon atime. But that was until she met
Jeremy Stinky. Stinky is a howyou say it? Okay, it makes

(05:39):
me laugh every time. Jeremy hada rough upbringing. He had an alcoholic
mother and lived with her many abusiveboyfriends. They beat him, dragged him
by the ears, tied him tochairs for hours, pushed his head into
deep freezers, all horrific things. No one should have to grow up like

(06:00):
this. No, and by thetime he was a teenager he had already
attempted suicide once. He was alsobullied in school, where the kids called
him stinky. He did, however, mesh well with one group. Once
his family moved to Medicine, hadAlberta. It was the Gouf group.

(06:23):
Of course. He loved ac DC, he drank, he smoked weed,
He did mushrooms and acid. Eventuallyhe dropped out of school just three months
into the tenth grade. That's alot of drugs for high school. Yeah.
I mean we all tried the odddrink and maybe smoked weed, but
mushrooms and acid just h Most interestingly, Jeremy believed that he was a three

(06:47):
hundred year old werewolf, and hewore a necklace with a vial of blood
around his neck. Do we notall? If that's not beyond bizarre,
I don't know what is. Hesaid he was part of a like in
brotherhood. On social media, hislikes included fellow like in Brethren, mosh

(07:10):
pits, gothic beings, kinky fetishes, blood, nails, aggressiveness, like
just general aggressiveness, eyeliner, darkclothing, and punk metal and rock music,
and like does he mean nails andfingernails or nails as in like a

(07:33):
hammer, totally a hammer and nails, like you know those gods people are
like I eat nails for breakfast,Yes, true, true enough. I
picture the one yeah, without anymilk. If you've seen SpongeBob, you
might laugh. He also had aset of dislikes online that were they're disturbing,

(08:01):
such as pigs, prostitutes, spiderwebs, backstabbers, and getting his heart
broken again, although he did mentionliking to kill quote unquote prostitutes on his
page, so there's that not Jasonmet Jeremy through a friend of hers that

(08:22):
hung in the same crowd as Jeremy. She thought that they had a lot
in common and that they should meet. Terrible friend. Yeah, it was
like, and why is she hangingout with like a group of twenty three
year olds right at the same timeas this twelve year old? Yeah?
Yes, right. They also startedtalking on a few different social media platforms

(08:43):
and started chatting on Vampire Freaks dotCom and Nexopia, which Sierra and I
discussed in a bonus episode of ourson Patreon that when we used to,
you know, be on my Spaceand that kind of stuff, and I
believe Nextopia is a Canadian thing. You had never heard of it? Correct?

(09:03):
I have never heard of it?Okay, Okay, I might have
been sheltered though, never know.Yeah, yeah, it was it was
sketchy, like it was public toeverybody. I bet you if I googled
my old page, I would beable to find it. Yeah, which
would be very crazy. Isn't justsocial media? Yes, okay, it
wasn't like instant Messenger. No,okay. Jasmine and Jeremy had their first

(09:28):
date at a punk rock concert, and allegedly Jeremy was under the impression that
Jasmine was closer to sixteen. Butthat's still a problem here because, like
we said at this one in ourstory, Jeremy is twenty three. Oh
and by the way, Jasmine istwelve, not sixteen, yans. The
two quickly fell into an US againstthem relationship. We all had one of

(09:54):
those in high school, right.Definitely. Jasmine thought she loved him,
She loved his energy. They hada lot in common, and they hung
out in similar crowds. They talkedon the phone every night, and he
would serenade her with songs that hewrote about her and make her feel special.
They exchanged disturbing and mushy messages andemails and poems and notes. Okay,

(10:20):
I'm all about romance, but unsolicitedsinging is always gruneworthy to me.
Please don't sing at me. Jasmine'sparents obviously were not at all okay with
her dating a twenty three year oldman, even if the abuse that he
suffered led him to behave like hewas mentally younger and believe that he had

(10:41):
lived in a fantasy world where hewas a vampire. It's still not okay.
He's twenty three. Eventually, Jasmine'spersonality started to change for the worst.
Her school guidance counselor was starting tobecome worried about her looks and her
attitude. She said that she wantedto be put into foster care because her
family were assholes and wouldn't let herdo anything. They started to fight a

(11:05):
lot, and she was getting groundedmore and more. When her parents finally
decided to dig through her things tofind out what was going on with their
little girl. Emails and messages backand forth with Jeremy and even the way
that she presented herself on social mediawas awful. Yeah, and they were

(11:28):
like so supportive of her, likeexpressing herself through her clothes and things like
that. Right when it takes adeep turn when your heroes are you know,
Jeffrey Dahmer, we got a problem. Well even I could say,
I mean, I'm not saying herhero should be Jeffrey Dahmer. Let me
correct that real quick, for everybodyturns this off. Children say dumb things.

(11:50):
Just because she says her heroes JeffreDahmer doesn't mean she actually believes that.
Like, yeah, I'm sure Isaid some super cringey dumb things when
I was little, but I didnot dated twenty three year old man and
I did not claim to be olderthan I was. So yeah, those
things are criminal. Yes, thoseare worrisome. Yeah, for sure.

(12:13):
Jasmine's parents took away her phone andher computer rights, and they even went
to family counseling together. At times, the Richardson parents would start to feel
that they could trust Jasmine again, and they would even give her back some
of her privileges, like here's yourphone, here's a little bit of computer
time, you can go to aconcert if you want. But then they'd

(12:33):
catch her sneaking around with Jeremy again, like making out in the alley behind
the house, and they'd have totake it all away all over again.
But the forbidden love story only madeher want him more, and she spoke
to Jeremy by using the library computers. Soon they were so serious that they

(12:54):
were paven sets and Jasmine began doingdrugs with Jeremy at twelve. Yeah,
that's not good. And then theydecided it might be best to model the
movie that they loved, Natural BornKiller, to kill Jasmine's family. And
there is a written record of theentire plan, because all very intelligent criminals

(13:22):
based their next moves on a movieand write it all down through emails,
right of course. Oh good times, And this is where our story is
going to take a bit of adark turn, so trigger warning. On
the night of the murders, Jasminehad herself a goddamn bubble bath and told
her friends that she wasn't going tobe able to go to the mall with

(13:43):
them the next day because she wasplanning to murder her family and obviously was
going to be on the run.Goodness, gracious, any good twenty twenty
two TV show, right, yougot to get ready for all good murders
for the good bubble bath. Jeremyhad asked his friend on one occasion to
help him do it. They weredoing drugs at the time, though,

(14:07):
so the friend declined but really didn'ttake it seriously. He did ask again,
though, and his friend obviously saidno. Again, but when Jeremy
realized that he knew he was beingserious, he said that he would kill
him if he told anyone about this, and that is why that friend never
came forward to report this prior oahmy goodness. He and his friends,

(14:30):
like Sierra said, watched Natural BornKillers, and Jeremy went to get cocaine
and alcohol. He did at leastsix lines of it, according to his
dealer's girlfriend, drank half a bottleof vodka, and then headed to the
Richardson home. Jeremy pulled up inhis mother's pickup truck snuck through a basement

(14:50):
window at four am that Jasmine snuckout of often and in the process he
woke up Deborah. He had aknife in its pocket, and Deborah though
that Jasmine was trying to sneak outagain and went down to the basement to
confront her, but instead came faceto face with a coke fueled Jeremy.
Jeremy immediately began slashing at her,and she did try and fight back.

(15:13):
She had many injuries on her handsand forearms, showing that she did try
and fend off the knife, whichis really sad. He stabbed her over
a dozen times Jesus. In thisprocess, Mark was woken up to the
screams of his wife. He randown to try and attack Jeremy instantly,
and he put up a hell ofa fight. Unfortunately, though, he

(15:35):
was overcome due to the number ofstab wounds that he had endured. Kind's
gracious, I know, like allof this is happening so quickly. By
this time, Jasmine had gone downstairsthat I had seen her mom lying in
a pool of blood and Jeremy andher dad fighting. Jasmine recalled later that
Jeremy had yelled at her father thatJasmine wanted this. She ran back up

(15:58):
stairs, not helping her dad becauseshe sucks. And also, the last
thing that Mark heard was that hisdaughter wanted them dead. So that's really
heartbreaking. It is heartbreaking. Butdo you really think she wanted him dead.
She's twelve, This adult molded hermind. It's disgusting. I don't

(16:19):
think she knows what she wanted.I think she just wanted to be with
her boyfriend and made a series ofreally poor decisions. We've been however,
we've been talking a lot about conmen lately. I think she was brainwashed.
Yeah, definitely groomed for sure, yes, yikes, but these next

(16:40):
moves will make you dislike her alittle bit. Jeremy went upstairs to find
Jasmine after Mark was conceivably dead.Jacob was cowering in his bed, crying
and screaming for his older sister. Not knowing what was going on. She
tried to console him, but hadall so tried to hurt him at the
same time. While she was hugginghim, she tried to squeeze his neck.

(17:04):
He was able to break free andran into the hallway, where he
was basically ganged up on by Jeremyand Jasmine. Jasmine slashed her little brother's
throat from ear to ear, andhe died choking on his own blood.
He was only eight years old,and Jeremy recalled that she was scary calm

(17:25):
while she was doing this. That'sjust that, he said, she said,
though, Yeah, and they allturn on each other in the end.
Yeah, we see this with manykiller couples. And the saddest thing
ever too, that I read inthe book Runaway Devil is Jacob tried to
defend himself with his lightsaber. Ohmy goodness, I know, yeah,

(17:49):
yeah, just hurt my heart, that poor goodness gracious. Following the murders,
the couple cleaned themselves up, tooktheir bloody clothes with them, disposing
of them in a trash can. They then took Deborah's purse and made a
withdrawal at the bank before going toJeremy's coat dealer's home. They tried to
stage the situation as if Jasmine hadbeen kidnapped after this attack ensued, which

(18:15):
like, why would man? Thatjust doesn't happen. If kidnappers are going
to kidnap, they don't usually killan entire family in the process. Not
usually. I'm not saying it doesn'thappen in our case before it does,
but it just doesn't feel likely.Jasmine and Jeremy attended a party that very
evening, and they acted as ifthey didn't just murder an entire family.

(18:37):
They also had sex, and partygoersstated some pretty heavy PDA During the party,
they told everybody about the murders, and Jasmine had even bragged about it,
saying, quote, my little brotherGargles don't like that. No,
That's where I'm like, You're kindof a monster, a young impressionable monster,

(19:03):
but young impressionable monsters. Casey,a friend of theirs, along with
two other people, were planning ongoing to Leader, where one of them
had family in the next province over. They offered to take Jasmine and Jeremy
with them, not knowing what theyhad just done, but just thinking that
they were trying to run away togetherbecause Jasmine's parents wouldn't let them be together.

(19:26):
Meanwhile, as Sierra said at thestart of the story, the bodies
were discovered. Following the news ofthe murders, some of the partygoers started
to come forward with the information thatthey knew and what Jasmine and Jeremy had
been saying at the party. Bloodevidence would be their undoing, though an

(19:47):
Oh boy, was there a lotof it. Oh goodness. Jasmine's photo
was plastered everywhere with people looking forher and Jeremy as murder suspects. In
addition to the blood evidence, theyfound a cartoon drawing in Jasmine's locker outlining
the plan, as well as allof the emails that the couple had sent

(20:08):
back and forth. They're so immaturelydumb, yeah, right, Like they
were like, Oh, this isa brilliant plan. Let's first sketch it
out so we know what we're gonnado. Yeah, that's that's kind of
what makes me think that, like, she wasn't in a right state of

(20:30):
mind to actually know a childish stateof what's going to happen. Yeah.
A rookie cop named Aaron Eworth Ialso read in some places as Ewart,
So take that how you will, was on his first shift in Leader and
had seen the All Points bulletin aboutthe two suspects involved in a triple homicide.

(20:53):
He was a smartass rookie, though, and he thought, Hey,
if they're coming from medicine, hatgoing to need gas. So he decided
to hang out at the largest gasstation off the highway and waited for a
few hours to see if anything happened. As he sat there, he noticed
a truck come rolling in. Assoon as it stopped, three girls came

(21:15):
spilling out of the front seat andwent into the gas station. While in
there, the girls noticed a newspaperwith the news of Jasmine's family and her
face with the wanted sign above it. They grabbed food, drinks, and
the paper and went back outside toshow them. Initially, they thought that
maybe somebody had broken in and donethis, but when they showed Jasmine,

(21:38):
she giggled and proceeded to tell themthat they were responsible for this again so
young in dudge, that they wentto the biggest gas station. Like,
if you were actually trying to bea criminal and get away with things,

(22:00):
these are big mistakes, right,Maybe, friends, can we take this
side road and go to this verysketchy gas station instead. Yeah. The
friends realized that they needed to getthe heck out of there quickly, but
meanwhile, the same rookie officer hadbeen following them. He called for a
backup and an arrest was made.Twelve is the youngest possible age at which

(22:23):
a person can be charged with acrime in Canada. Convicts who were under
the age of fourteen at the timethat they committed the crime cannot be sentenced
as adults and cannot be given morethan a ten year sentence. Jasmine,
who had just turned thirteen before beingconvicted, was the youngest person in Canada

(22:48):
to ever convicted of a multiple firstdegree murder. Her ten year sentence was
completed by May of twenty and sixteen, and her sentence included credit for the
eighteen months that she had already spentin custody. We followed by four years
in a psychiatric institution and a fourand a half year served supervision in the

(23:08):
community. So I mean, Ikind of like that Canadian laws are a
little bit more lenient than we typicallyseen in the U, at least on
children, for sure. Yes,because we just did the case of our
Sierra discovered Sintoia Brown, who wassixteen at the time that she committed her
crime and sentenced to have a verydifferent outcome. Yes, So, and

(23:33):
I think it's good as well thatif Jasmine did all of like when Jasmine
did all of this, like,it's good that she was able to,
you know, be in psychiatric careand receive treatment and treatment and important.
Yes, you clearly have some thingsgoing on that we need to talk.
Yes. Jeremy Stanky, now goingby the name Jackson May, was also

(24:00):
convicted on three counts of first degreemurder. He was tried in November of
two thousand and eight and found guiltyby a jury on three counts of first
degree murder for the deaths of Deborah, Mark and Jacob. He was sentenced
to three life sentences, one foreach murder count, and they were to
be served concurrently. He will beeligible for parole after serving twenty five years

(24:26):
and the thought is he changed hisname because he's responsible for killing a child
and as we know, that doesn'tgo so well in prison, right,
or maybe they were calling him stinkytoo, a little bit of prison yard
justice and bullying. Casey Lancaster, their mutual friend that had helped them get

(24:51):
away in all of this, didreceive an accessory to murder charge, but
this was dropped when she pleaded guiltyto an obstruction charge in medicine hat at
the provincial court. She received oneyear of house arrest as part of the
plea bargain and was ordered to refrainfrom drugs and alcohol because remember she was
the same age as Jasmine. Yeahyeah, so hopefully that changed should be

(25:15):
the bettering this level of drugs andalcohol as well. So yes, I'm
very hopeful that that did change herlife for the better. But just in
case anyone was wondering what happened toher because she was driving them out of
the province. So and yeah, that is our very dark story with a
little bit of twists and turns anda three hundred year old werewolf. So
