Reinstatement and Expansion of U.S. Travel Restrictions is in effect today

Effective 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025, citizens of 12 specified countries will face a full suspension of entry into the U.S., while nationals from an additional seven countries will be subject to heightened, though partial, entry limitations.

This directive resurrects a hallmark policy approach from President Trump's first term, signaling a renewed emphasis on stringent, nationality-based controls over admission to the United States.   The ban fully suspends entry for citizens from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Additionally, heightened restrictions are in place for individuals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The administration's stated justifications for this policy include national security concerns, perceived deficiencies in vetting processes, high visa overstay rates, and a connection to a recent terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado. Important exemptions to the ban include lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, certain visa categories, and specific allowances for major sporting events.
