(00:20):
Then Pilot therefore took Jesus and scourged him. And the
soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on
his head, and arrayed him in a purple garment. And
they came unto him and said, Hail, King of the Jews.
And they struck him with their hands. And Pilot went
out again, and saith unto them, behold, I bring him

(00:41):
out to you, that ye may know that I find
no crime in him. Jesus therefore came out, wearing the
crown of thorns and the purple garment, and Pilot saith
unto them, behold the man. When therefore the chief priests
and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, crucify him,
crucify him. Pilot saith unto them, take him yourselves and

(01:04):
crucify him, for I find no crime in him. The
Jews answered him, we have a law, and by that
law he ought to die, because he made himself the
son of God. When Pilot therefore heard this, saying, he
was the more afraid, and he entered into the pratorium again,
and saith unto Jesus, whence art thou. But Jesus gave

(01:27):
him no answer. Pilot therefore saith unto him, speakest thou
not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power
to release THEE and have power to crucify THEE. Jesus
answered him, thou wouldst have no power against me, except
it were given THEE from above. Therefore, he that delivered

(01:48):
me unto THEE hath greater sin. Upon this, Pilot sought
to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, if
thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend. Everyone
that maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilot
therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat
down on the judgment seat at a place called the pavement.

(02:11):
But in Hebrew goabatha. Now it was the preparation of
the passover. It was about the sixth hour, and he
saith unto the Jews, behold your king. They therefore cried
out away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilot
saith unto them, shall I crucify your king? The chief

(02:34):
priest answered, we have no king but Caesar. Then therefore
he delivered him unto them to be crucified. They took
Jesus therefore, and he went out, bearing the cross for himself,
unto the place called the place of a skull, which
is called in Hebrew Golgatha, where they crucified him, and
with him two others on either side, one and Jesus

(02:58):
in the midst And Pilot wrote a title also and
put it on the cross, and there was written Jesus
of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. This title therefore
read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus
was crucified was nigh to the city, and it was
written in Hebrew and in Latin, and in Greek. The
chief priest of the Jews therefore said to Pilot, right,

(03:20):
not the king of the Jews, but that he said,
I am king of the Jews. Pilot answered, what I
have written, I have written the soldiers. Therefore, when they
had crucified Jesus took his garments and made four parts
to every soldier apart, and also the coat. Now the
coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said, therefore,

(03:44):
one to another, let us not rend it, but cast
lots for it whose it shall be, that the scripture
might be fulfilled. Which saith they parted my garments among them,
And upon my vesture did they cast lots. These things
therefore the soldiers did. But there were standing by the
cross of Jesus, his mother and his mother's sister, Mary,

(04:05):
the wife of Kloppus, and Mary Magdalen. When Jesus therefore
saw his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved,
he saith unto his mother, woman, behold thy son. Then
saith he to the disciple, behold thy mother. And from
that hour the Disciple took her unto his own home.

(04:26):
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things are now finished
that the scripture might be accomplished, saith i thirst. There
was set there a vessel full of vinegar. So they
put a spongeful of the vinegar upon hissop and brought
it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
he said, it is finished, and he bowed his head

(04:48):
and gave up his spirit. The Jews, therefore, because it
was the preparation that the bodies should not remain on
the cross upon the Sabbath, for the day of that
sabbath was a high day, asked of Pilot that their
legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
The soldiers therefore came and break the legs of the

(05:10):
first and of the other that was crucified with him.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he
was dead already, they break not his legs. Howbeit one
of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and
straightway there came out blood and water. And he that
hath seen, hath borne witness, and his witness is true.

(05:33):
And he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also
may believe. For these things came to pass, that the
scripture might be fulfilled. A bone of him shall not
be broken. And again another scripture saith they shall look
on him whom they pierced. And after these things, Joseph
of Aramathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for

(05:57):
fear of the Jews asked of pilot that he might
take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave.
He came therefore and took away his body. And there
came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to
him by night, bringing a mixture of murr and aloes,
about one hundred pounds. So they took the body of
Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

(06:20):
as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now
in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden,
and in the garden a new tomb, wherein was never
man yet laid there. Then, because of the Jews, preparation
for the tomb was nigh at hand. They laid Jesus.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
