The opening phrase of this verse may explain why Paul dwells so much on concepts such as bravery and spiritual strength when writing to Timothy. It's possible this represented a spiritual weakness which Paul was helping Timothy to overcome. Perhaps Timothy was content in his role of serving alongside Paul and did not prefer to be the outspoken leader of a large movement of Christians. And yet, this was the role Timothy held in Ephesus at the time Paul wrote this letter. However, Paul urged Timothy to stand strong. Rather than fear, God had given a spirit or attitude of "power and love and self-control."

(00:00):
So today we're going to be readingSecond Timothy chapter one, verse seven.
For God has not given us aspirit of timidity, but of power and
love and discipline. So I knowthe King James version and the New King
James version kind of reads a bitdifferent. A power, love, and
a sound mind. So let's takeit back here. We are called not

(00:20):
to be ashamed of the Gospel ofJesus Christ. According to Roman chapter one,
verse sixteen. For those who areashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
the power of God does not reston them, because the power of
God is revealed through his Gospel, and his righteousness is revealed as well through
his gospel. So in verse eightof chapter one the Second Timothy, Timothy

(00:41):
Paul says that therefore, do notbe ashamed of the testimony of our Lord
or of me his prisoner, butjoin with me in the suffering for the
Gospel according to the power of God. So this kind of emphasizes the verse
that preceded it, which is verseseven. We're talking about living for Christ
and not being ashamed of Christ,of God, or the Good News or

(01:06):
His Word. We ought to notbe ashamed of these things because it is
the power of God that saves us. God's righteousness and his powers revealed through
his good News, through his Word, through his gospel that enabled us to
be saved. So Paul is tellingyoung Timothy at this time that in order

(01:30):
to not be ashamed, right tolive that life unashamed and bold for Christ,
we must remember that God has notgiven us a spirit of timidity.
Now, the interesting thing is becauseTimothy is relatively young, a young pastor,
that Paul emphasize this word timidity. You know, we're not to be

(01:53):
timid, okay, passive or orjust kind of willy nilly. You know.
We have to be bold for ChristJesus, and especially Timothy because again
he's young. You know, he'sgonna have a lot of people that as
a little older than him that's goingto challenge him, you know, or
people around him that's going to talkabout him. So being timid is not

(02:15):
the way they go right, isnot to shrinking back is not what is
Christ like, and that's not what'sgoing to you know, get you further
in your walk, you know.So Paul says that God has not given
us a spirit of timidity. Butwhat God did give Timothy, what God

(02:36):
gives us as followers of Jesus Christis the spirit of power. Through the
Holy Spirit. We live by thespirit of the Living God, the Holy
Spirit by his power. Ain't noneof us is going to be able to
live for God if it wasn't forthe Holy Spirit helping us, empowering us
through every which way life circumstance isimpossible. God, God did not give

(03:02):
us the spirit of timidity, buthe gave us the spirit of power.
He also has given us the spiritof love, enable us to love others
as Christ loves the Church, asChrist loves us personally, as God through
the person of Jesus, Christ lovesus. We were given the spirit of

(03:22):
love, and we have been giventhe spirit of self control or of discipline.
Now, the spirit of discipline issomething that's not really talked about too
much. The spirit of discipline involvesus having self control. You know,
we're not talk too often anymore aboutthe importance of self control. A true

(03:44):
follower of Christ has the spirit ofthe Living God living inside of him.
So the Holy Spirit is not goingto allow us to just go out and
do whatever we want to do,good or bad. You know, He's
there to regulate us to the wordof God. Regulate our emotions. Our
actions are these, our thoughts, our feelings, and emotions based on God's
word. We must practice self controlin light of God's word, as in

(04:10):
light of what the Holy Spirit hasrevealed and reminded us. We must.
That's our job to have self control. It's Christ Jesus's job to the power
the Holy Spirit to remind us ofthis truth. But brothers and sisters,
we must because we have the spiritof discipline, to have self control.

(04:30):
We have to do everything in moderation. Everything something we can't do at all,
but some things we can do inmoderation. Some things, you know,
it's not for us as Christians, but we must have self control.
And I pray that God will giveall of us the spirit of self control,
of discipline, of love, andof power to live this life for

(04:54):
him as he has called us to. God is not going to tell you
to do something that he didn't equipyou to do. Him already God is
not over here trying to figure thingsout. He's figured it out he already,
He's rested. He's in a positionof rest, never to create again.
So he has given us all thatwe need. We must rely on
the Holy Spirit to live for himalways. Thanks for watching. Please be

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
