Speaker 1 (00:28):
Welcome to another horrifying episode of Bill and Ashley's Terror Theater.
This week we're breaking down our top five horrors of
the year.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
All that right after these ads we have no control over.
Welcome back.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
I'm Ashley Coffin, joined as always by my co host and.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Terror Bill Bria. How are you doing, my darling, on
this last day of the year.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Literally, I am doing fantastic.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
So yeah, Happy New Year's Evash and Daze. Yeah, we're
looking forward to a brand new year. This is the
end of twenty twenty four. I've been and of course
reflecting as we all have, I'm sure and you know,
twenty twenty four is not a bad year. I know, people,
you know, tend to either sort of get pessimistic roptimistic
around this time of year, and I waver back and forth.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
But I'm feeling pretty good this year or this day.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Finish twenty four was great. But the movies were really good.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Well actually, you know, that's really what I was mostly
thinking of, because I don't have a life. I mean,
movies are my life. So it's like, as long as
the movies are good, my life is great.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Exactly. We had a lot of good distractions this year exactly.
All right, So let's break them down. I guess I
could just jump in and go first, going from yeah I.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
Have to one, number one being our favorites and number
five being you know, down the list of our favorites.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
How you say, But.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
Yeah, of course I mean worst, not worse, not worse,
because we could probably make up a list of ten
movies alone. Yeah that you know, and then ten would
be and even that, you know, these are the ten
that made it hunt to the list. There's obviously going
to be quote unquote worst ones that never made it
onto the list. So yeah, none of these are bad movies.
Let's just put that out there.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah, and I liked a lot of people wrote in,
which is fun. So we're going to see where everybody's is.
It's very personal, uh to the person. And my number
five took me a real That was the only number
I had a really hard time picking. But I'm gonna
go with Late Night with the Devil, all right. I
know it technically didn't hame oult in here, but still,
oh no, it did release this year. That movie was

(02:26):
just everything I wanted it to be, you know, it
was exactly It's a perfect Halloween horror. Rewatch movie, you
have possession, you have weird stuff going on. I thought
it was shot really cool. It looked like the seventies.
I really like David Bismalchin and at the end was
fucking crazy.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
So everything and a little bow for me. I really
liked it.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Oh no, it's fantastic.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
You know, obviously problematic elements aside in terms of, you know,
the stuff that we discussed in our episode, but I
think you're going to bring legacy. No, of course, but
legacy is gonna, you know, win out over that. I
think that in the years to come, people are gonna
you know, watch the movie forget about that, and they're
just going to really be taken in by the story,
the format, the structure, and of course des Melchian, whose

(03:07):
performance is just so good that even if the rest
was crap, like he would be worth watching it horror.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
But fortunately the rest is not crap. It's great. Are
we moving on? Okay?

Speaker 4 (03:17):
I guess I will be going on to my number five,
which already I do have to say, is there like
maybe a space for sort of an honorable mention sort
of thing, just because I don't know if there's you know,
because Obviously we've talked a lot about this show about
like what defines horror and what gets defined as horror,

(03:38):
and everybody sort of, you know, gets to sort of
make I guess, that call for themselves, even though obviously
there's an objective, you know, label that's put onto movies
as well. So I have two that would have been
in my top five if they were clearly horror, but
I think that there's enough elements in them that aren't
that have to be left off the list. But I

(04:00):
will just mention them because they almost made it. Which
is David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, which is the new Kronenberg
that hasn't gotten a wide release yet this year, but
I think it's one of my favorites that he's made,
the more that I've sat with it, and I may
even like it more than his last movie, Crimes the Future.
You know, it's not as high as you know, say
the classics like The Fly and Video Drama and all that,

(04:22):
but it is Kronenberg, you know, doing with noir, some
really creepy, some really like horny, weird you know stuff,
while also being very emotional, and yeah, when it comes out,
I don't know when it's going to get a wide
release in America. I think it may have had one overseas,
but I'm not sure, but yeah, when it releases, you

(04:42):
definitely want to check that out. And then the other
one is when I we've talked about I Believe, which
is It's What's Inside, which you know, was marketed as
a horror film. I think if you're in the market
mood for a horror film, you could watch it and
still have a lot of fun with it.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
But it's not a scary movie so to speak.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
You know, it doesn't even have have a huge body count,
but it has a lot of the sort of tension
and suspense that you know a horror movie might.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
But you know, it's borderline.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
You know, you might put that more in a different
category of you know, some other like a drama or
you know, satire or something. So it's off, it's off
the list, But I just wanted to mention those. So
that means that my number five is ironically immaculate, which

(05:30):
is the Michael Mowen Sidney.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Sweeney Nun movie.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, yeah, it's It's something that I didn't think was
gonna stick with me as much as it has, but
so much of its pieces have you know, continued to
you know, stick with me since I saw it in
I guess the early part of this year. And really,
you know, I think it goes all the way to

(05:54):
what I've said before on the show that Ray Bradbury
once said about an ending, which is great movie with
a mediocre ending is a media ochre movie.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
A mediocre movie with a great ending is a great movie.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
And I feel like this is the latter where you know,
you can have your nippicks about the rest of the
film being you know, kind of what you might expect
and going through the motions of a nonsplitation thriller, but
that ending is strong enough that like, it's never going
to leave my head, and I just kind of, you know,
want to keep revisiting it.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
So I yeah, I guess my honorable mention, since I
didn't know we were doing them, would be the first
omen and unfortunately for Sidney Sweeney, those two came out
at the same time.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
One way better.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah, it feels a gift to pick. It's a Sophie's
choice where it's like nothing.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
I have to pick. It's just when you put the
two of them next.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
To each other, right, Yeah, it feels like you have
to pick because they're so similar.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, you're just like, oh, maybe if there was a
spaced out thing here, it would have been a little different.
Yeah yeah, okay, okay, moving into my number four.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Number four, My number.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Four was Adity.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
I loved Aditi so much and I don't even like
I might have been that. I watched it by myself
in a dark room, just really fully immersed in it.
For me, it was the perfect run time, just the
right amount of jump scares that matter and mean something.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
It was shot well, I like an Irish horror. Yeah.
I was really happy with Odity.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah. No, it's it's fantastic.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
It it's obviously I mean, you know, maybe uh people
that follow us have seen me post my top twenty
five movies overall, not just horror movies of the year
that I made a list for the other day. Oddity
is absolutely on that list. I think it's number twenty
out of twenty five. I think the only reason I
didn't put it higher is just because I, you know,
like I was saying about Immaculate, there was just stuff

(07:35):
that stuck with me in a I guess a broader
way or a deeper way. Than this movie did because
of whatever reason. But I do think it absolutely needs
to be in a discussion of, you know, best horror
of the year, because, unquestionably, for my money, it is
the scariest horror movie of the year. I think that
there are images in the movie that well, like I said,
never leave my if I had nightmares, they would never

(07:57):
leave my nightmares is.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
But they're gonna say tents and cameras, Yeah, exactly tense. Well,
even like after that scene when what's her face? I
don't remember the blonde name runs to the car and
then you just slowly see that face coming through the doorway.
I'm like, out of there, girl. Oh yeah, they had
some great shots.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
My only gripe and I agree with Ken is we're like,
where's the rest of this house? Like we have this
huge square mansion with this courtyard and we only like
we know they're redoing it and stuff, but we really
only live in that one long area. And I was like,
I would really like to see the rest of this
house because this house is crazy.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Yeah, could we get a floor plan or schematic or something?

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, like where do you guys just living in that
one part? And why you even get.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
This big thing, right, Well, I guess they just have
weird ideas about living spaces.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
I don't know. Uh so my number four is one.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
They also talked about Out of Sundance, which you know
hit me hard and has has not left. And I
it did get a release in October, it kind of
felt like it got buried or passed over, which was
Your Mont's Her, which is the Caroline Lindy movie Starringlysabrera.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I don't know if you got to see it, Ash,
I didn't.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
I didn't get to see the other two you were
talking about either.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Oh darn it.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Well, yeah, it's like, technically did one not come out
in twenty it's not technicitely.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Not out right.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
The Shrouds did not get a wide release. Yeah, yeah,
the Cronenberg Plan Bill. God, but it counts as a
twenty twenty four movie. But yeah, so Your Monster did
get a theatrical release. It just kind of, I said,
it kind of got buried. And I think I hope
that it's going to be rediscovered, you know, on streaming,
home video, whatever, because I still am just enamored with

(09:37):
obviously Moth the Sobrera's performance, which I think is for
my money, her best performance to date. I mean, it's
the thing I've really liked her the most in. I've
liked her in a lot of other things, but it's.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Just the like beauty and the Beast. Yeah, Okay, I
just remember you're talking about.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
Oh yeah, No, it's it's where she you know, meets
her childhood monster in the closet or under the bed,
you know, but I think he's in the closet most
of the time, and as an a else, you know,
And and she's dealing with a lot of trauma and
you know issues that are both you know, physical, like
she has a a you know, a disease or some

(10:10):
sort of medical issue, and then she's also dealing with
you know, trauma from like this shitty boyfriend of hers
and having to you know, be cut out of this
play that he wrote for her and all this stuff.
So but it's really clever, it's really funny. Uh. It
has that you know ambiguity that I love in so
much horror of you know, is this happening this way,
is it happening that way?

Speaker 3 (10:31):
What does this mean? What does that mean?

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Without being too precious about it has some great original
songs that written that blissed performs. Yeah, So if you
get a chance to check it out, I definitely recommend
it because I love what it does with the fairytale
horror tropes that it brings up and uh and.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
It's just a great example of female led horror that.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Yeah, No, I remember when you were talking about that.
I wanted to see that one, and I wanted to
see another one with really hot friend check from Leah.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Oh so do well.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
The Beast, which again is one of those movies that
it is my top movie of the year overall because
it sort of blends into science fiction and period piece
and modern day tension.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
I'm I don't know if horror. I think horror could
go with it.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
It's a very lynching in sort of horror, you know, Okay,
And so it would be on my list were it
not for the fact that it does blend to the
other so many genres.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
So it's like, you know, is it pure horror?

Speaker 4 (11:26):
Not really, But if you want to another recommendation, The
Beast is definitely another one I would recommend highly.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
A completely ridiculous side note, but when we were watching Noasfaratu,
every time Lily Rose dep was like, come to me
in my head I'm like, I have recently really heard
that before, like in film recently.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Where is it? And I'm racking my mind. I'm like, oh,
it's doomed too.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
When she calls it, it's exactly the same, like come
to me, and I was like, okay, I knew I
heard it before.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
And I'm not.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
I like, not that it hasn't been in film a
million times, but I was like, kind of exactly like that.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
I just thought that you would think that was funny.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Hey, you know it's a real nos fa to No wait,
I was thinking that I could make a pun out
of that nos fara do nas farrad do too. No, okay,
almost got it there, but not really.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah, okay, so number three. My number three is Long Legs.
I really really enjoyed Long Legs. It was a fun watch.
It wasn't even more fun rewatch once, you know, to
look for all the little fun things like oh, let's
see how many demons we can count. But the imagery
stuck with me that that orange eyed demon thing was terrifying.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
I did not care for her being in my nightmares.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
I will not comment because it may come up again.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
So okay, my number three is one that We talked
about a lot on our episode about at the substance
it is, and I was just talking about your monster
is like, oh, this is a great example of a
female at horror, which it is, and the substance just
tops that even more where it's like, you know, this
is that if your monster is sort of the uh

(13:04):
more nicest too pythia word, but you know, more sort
of cuddly in a way, sort of you know, exploration
of of feminist themes. Then the substances like just a
scream at a at, a real rageful you know, yell
across the bow of of just you know, goopy gory,
you know, satire and and uh and commentary and it's

(13:29):
it's so great. It's just a fun transgressive like you know,
really balse the Wall movie.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
No comment because it might come up again.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Okay, around to number two.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
Yeah, oh and it rhymes. My number two is Nosparatu.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Guess what ash is it?

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Your number two?

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Number two is Faratu.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Just all over the place.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
We really did just get into it, but I mean
it was stunningly beautiful. It was it was what I
wanted from what Robert Egger said he was going to
give us, and I was very happy with everybody's performance
and what everybody did.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
Oh yeah, And.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
I saw it again last night for the third time
at the New Beverly on thirty five milimeter because I
had those tickets a month at advance and you know,
they're non transferable, so I was like, yeah, I'll go
again and I'll see it. And I was so happy
I did, because the print was gorgeous, you know, it
was it was obviously a new print that they struck,
but also it was packed at a four thirty in.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
The afternoon showing on a Monday. I know it's fun.

Speaker 4 (14:34):
I know it's a holiday week, but like still Monday
of four thirty, that's pretty impressive.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
And that's Tarantino's place, right too. Hell yeah, yeah, that
doesn't surprise me. Yeah, that's so fun.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
And the audience was, like I heard some annoying film
bros that were like sitting behind me after the movie
like dissing it and all that crap. But like, generally,
I'd say it because it was such a big audience,
I packed audience that generally the audience was into it,
and it's really a great movie to see with a
totally into it audience.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
I mean all movies are when their audience is like
locked in.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
But this one, I mean some of the the most
uh uh audacious moments in the movie had like very
audible gasps and reactions and everything, and it's like, ah,
that's so cool, that's so fun, And it's just such
a gift to get such a great horror film right
at the end of the year, because we don't always
you know, right, so.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Well, we're going to get into condas next year?

Speaker 4 (15:21):
Yeah, you know, yeah, what if we're what if this
time next year, Ash, we're putting in a ConA in
our top.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Five Crazier things have happened.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
Okay, well this is great because I didn't know if
we were going to have a lineup pick, but we did,
so that's what we did.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Yeah, I guess our I think our one two threes
are just swapped.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Uh maybe yeah, okay, yeah, you're right. I think our
one two threes are swapped. All right, let's do it.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yeah, because mine's the substance.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
I there's not a moment of that movie that I
didn't love, from the female leads to the female French director,
to the frenchness of the film, to the gore, to
the rage, to everything to the soundtrack, like the score,
it all just pulls you in to the commentary of
what's going on in the world, and it's just it was.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
It was perfect.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
It was the most enjoyable watch I've had, not just
the year, but I feel like a while it's long,
but it doesn't feel long. I was just as happy
to watch it again, like not even a week or
two later, so we could like when we were recording
on it, I enjoyed it equally as much, and I
will every time I watch it.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
The end is everything you know as.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
A as like a Sam Raimi fan and Gore and
Peter Jackson fan, that that ending is just you're like, oh,
this feels really for me, and it's like fuck everybody
who doesn't get it. And I really appreciate that, like
that kind of filmmaking. Bravo standing ovation. I hope that
the Oscars give it some some form of love because

(16:50):
just the we've seen this story before, it's not a
new story like we talked about in the cast, but
the way that they did it, like oh, I'm going
to literally rip out of your back and body heart,
it was it was.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Yeah, I think what you just said about you know,
what we've been saying, both of us and others have
been saying about I hope it gets some awards love.
I mean, on paper, this movie should never be approaching,
you know, the typical awards show love. It's just that
damn good that you know, it's undeniably fantastic and so
well made and so well crafted. As you said, it's
not a new story, but it feels so fresh and

(17:22):
unique that that's why it's in that conversation really, because
you know, it's the quality is so high that it
feels like even a staunchly you know, I won't say
anti but it kind of as anti anti horror, you know,
organization as the Academy would have to recognize something in
it where it's right, you know.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
And that's what fuck the Academy. Honestly, I'm not saying
it like we're not talking about it, like, oh, it
needs to be there. When they did when Parasite won
Best Picture, I thought, oh, are we finally going to
start having this conversation that so many more movies and
categories and things should be here where others can kind
of it's time to go. Yeah, Like I just still
think stunt people should be involved casting. It's interesting that

(18:03):
they're in casting, but we all know that one chick's
gonna win every year whatever, Right, But it's time to
start bringing these other magnificent stories in because yeah, so
what if it's horror, like we said on the other cast,
Tony collect crushed and hereditary and that performance is you
don't forget it, And that's what we should be looking for,
not just being like, oh, you know, this is a horror.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
We can't even like look at the performances. It's like
why why so?

Speaker 1 (18:31):
And then with everything everywhere all at once winning, it
gets you a little bit more like, Okay, we are
finally looking outside of the blind Side and the Green
Book and like all these other like.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Crash, let's do this. Let's let art speak speak for itself,
let the people see it.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
You know, Ash, do you realize that, as far as
that is concerned, you are the star of the New
Year's Eve showy?

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Everybody, dude, I loved that she had when she walked
out with Demi Moore's face taped on her face and
nobody noticed except for like a couple that tit's out
of course.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
That's going on with the back here.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
But yeah, oh, man, it's me Jessica.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
And yes, as we alluded to already, our our top
three are all sort of swapped around, but mine is
long legs. It I feel is something that, uh, for
whatever reason, speaks to so much of what I love.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
About the horror genre.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
You know, there's obviously a great deal of dread in it.
There's a great deal of ambiguity and dream logic. I
always am really responsive to stories about the occult or
you know, the nature of evil that postulate but not
for two falls in this category as well. That you know,
as soon as something so abhorrent or so evil is

(20:04):
introduced into.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Reality that it breaks reality somehow.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
You know that the rules of logic and reality and
real life and kind of what we expect to see
in everyday you know, humdrum life is gone out the window.
And you know, then just like our worst nightmares can
be realized or you know, perhaps they all were always true,
you know.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Sort of thing.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
And I love Perkins Osgard Perkins combining the sort of
you know, stayed very logical grammar of the procedural, you know,
the silence of the Lambs, the X Files, any serial
killer movie you can think of, with something that's you know,
so dread filled in a cult that you know, by

(20:48):
the end, it feels like we're in a different realm altogether.
And obviously the performances, you know, Mike Monroe and Nicholas Cage,
the two of them just being instantly some of the
most dolible horror characters. I would say, ever, I'm going
to be that hyperbolic. But and you know, and who

(21:09):
plays Alia.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
A Trade's too. She was great. I can never.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
At at least wit.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
Yeah, Alicia, Like, yeah, if you watch her work, she's
always been a kook, which is great.

Speaker 3 (21:21):
Love her.

Speaker 1 (21:21):
Yeah, even from it you could see it in her
little tiny eyes.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
And yeah, I think that for me, this movie represents
like the culmination of what I was kind of seeing
in Perkins's work from The Black Coat's Daughter, Uh, you
know early on where it's like, oh, this is the
kind of level he could get to, and he did
and it was so exciting to see. And yeah, it's
like I said about all of these on the list,

(21:46):
but you know, this one being the most it's it's
going to have I think the most impact on me
personally going forward in terms of just oh, remember that shot.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
Remember that scene, remember that feeling, all that stuff.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:56):
I did an episode of Multiverse News a couple of
weeks ago and the topic that they were doing that
night was the films that they were most excited for
for twenty twenty five. So of course I was like, well,
I'm only going to do hard because this is where
I am.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
So I did like.

Speaker 1 (22:10):
My top five that I was most excited for, and
definitely Monkey Paul. It was right like number two. My
number one is the Stodenberg Ghost one. That trailer just
sucked me in. I cannot wait.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
And that was another one I was lucky to see
at Sundance, and it is a special movie.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
I will say that.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
I showed it to Jay Scotti the trailer right after
we were done talking about it, and he was like
the cinematography. I was like, right, and is it Neon
or eight twenty five is distributing there? Yeah, very excited.
But that Oz Perkins trailer looks real good.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
Uh okay, so I guess we've we've got our lists.
Now let's see what all of you have had to say.

Speaker 3 (22:48):
Already.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
I will say real quick though, worst I had two worsts.
Oh okay, oh yeah, but we'll do them at the end.

Speaker 5 (22:56):
We'll see what everybody else does really, right, Yeah, I
think we'll start with Anthony Kapo Bianco, who writes, Hey,
Bill and Ash, these are my top five horror of
twenty twenty four and extremely brief explanation as to why
hope you guys have a wonderful twenty twenty five and
beyond Oh thank you, Anthony, we hope you do tea
all right.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
Number five the substance, amazing, direction, acting and message. Number
four Abigail super funny and had its scary bits, but
we all know Meghan is beating Abigail in a fight.
Number three terrifier three. Love this franchise so much. Sienna
has my heart mine too, Anthony. I gotta say number
two smile too. Naomi Scott carried this film and deserves awards. Also,

(23:36):
I agree with that it is abominable to me that
she is not shortlisted for Best Song. I think that
those one of those songs needed to be nominated for
Best Song with the.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Askers over Shelika Shan Shamala. Yeah, I mean, how do
you say? Her name is Selica?

Speaker 4 (23:53):
I think okay and hers were great too, and I
love trap, but yeah, I think if you're putting the
songs against each other, the sky Riley songs are just I.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
Really pushed to try to watch this one before we
did this, but I just didn't get time. Like I
told Bill, I am literally thirty minutes in a heretic.
I'm like, I'm running behind. I only haven't a couple
hours left in this year.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
And then just to finish Anthony's list. Number one is
also long legs.

Speaker 4 (24:16):
Love everything about this movie, especially the main protagonist, and
I agree, Anthony.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
There you go number one. I like this list.

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Yeah, great list.

Speaker 2 (24:24):
No Terrifire three.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
I mean it kind of goes without saying like that
is always going to be an honorable mention for me.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
As many times as they're doing it. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (24:31):
It depends on what they pull out with this story
if it'll be ever make it to my top five,
just because it's not that I don't love what they're doing,
but it's.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
Like this is wild. But I will say the first
one was Yeah, I will say.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
That if I had seen Terrifier two on the year
that it was released, which I was twenty twenty two, right, Yeah,
Unfortunately I missed it but if I had seen it
that year, it would have been in my top somewhere,
probably top fifteen or something like that, because I really
was impressed with how it elevates, you know, that franchise.
I think three continues the goodwill and obviously, you know,

(25:03):
as we talked about in our episode, it's still a
great movie, but it just wasn't like another notch it,
you know, and it wasn't another notch up yet to
be like, Okay, it's definitely got to be in the
top fifteen or something.

Speaker 3 (25:13):
But we'll see what happens with Terrifier four. Could be
a huge finale.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
All right. Next up is Chris Beatty.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
He says, Hey, Bill and Ashley just wanted to say
thanks for all the great content you provide this year,
with some truly stellar episodes and laugh out loud moments.
I'm still cracking up at pay your Bills. Oh my god.
They messaged me after a Grumlins two and I was like,
after I said it, I was like, I probably shouldn't
have made that joke, but I'm so glad people thought
it was funny. Oh my good, that's my humor. Here

(25:40):
are my top five of the year. I'm guessing it's
one to five. They didn't number it, but yeah, I'm
going to say it's one, two, three for five. So
one is the substance, two would be smile, two, three
is oddity that's a terrifier three and then five is
alien Romulus. Based on that year, it was a remarkable
for women in the genre. Excited for twenty twenty five

(26:02):
and what the podcast in Horror has to bring.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Thanks Chris, Betty.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Thank you Chris. That's another solid list. As I think
we've been saying like we were really spoiled for choice
this year when it comes to horror movies. Like we
it has been an unequivocally great year for the genre
and we've been blessed.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
I didn't even think about Alien Dah. Yeah, it wouldn't
have made my list, but.

Speaker 4 (26:26):
It wouldn't be top five for me, but it is
on my list of top twenty five. So our next
list comes to us from Isaiah Bigay. He says, Hi,
Bill and Ash, I hope you've had a great holiday
in New Year's Here are my top five horror movies
of twenty twenty four. One Terrifier, three, This is my
Empire strikes Back and Sianna means so much to me
as an adult who survived childhood abuse.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
Wow. That is yeah.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
Yeah Two Azrael, ooh that what interesting?

Speaker 3 (26:53):
Pick Samaras.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
Okay, Samorrow Weaving is one of my favorites, and it's
so fun seeing her have to convey so much emotion
without speaking. I agree Tomorrow Weaving is great in Israel.
Three Nasfaratu. It feels like a less whimsical Tim Burton movie.

Speaker 3 (27:07):
H like his films.

Speaker 4 (27:09):
It feels like a celebration of weirdos, almost like it
was saying some madness is required to bring darkness to
the light.

Speaker 3 (27:15):
Ooh, okay, Isaiah. Number four, I like it. I like it.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
Number four You'll never find Me. I used to be
a theater kid and this felt like a play. And
the sound design is amazing. If you can, I recommend
watching with noise canceling headphones. And number five Smile too,
another performance driven movie. I'd say Naomi Scott blew me away.
Naomi Scott is great and smile too, Yes, Isaiah, honorable
mention Your Monster not really horror, but it's fun and cute.

(27:42):
There you go, Well you know what, I'm stumping for
it for horror, Isaiah so it's on the list, But you.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Did say that some people wouldn't see it, thig.

Speaker 4 (27:52):
I know, I know, and I yeah, Like I said,
I have a nebulous top five depending on what you
consider horror and what you don't.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
So okay, sorry, I clicked off my screen. Here we
go on professional. I want to see that.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
And I honestly I didn't know anything about. I don't
know anything about. You'll never find me, so I have
to look into it.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
Yeah, did you see it?

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Did you like it?

Speaker 3 (28:12):
No? I didn't see it.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Ooh, some homework, thanks, I say, yeah, thanks.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
And lastly comes from friend of the show coworker on the.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
Network all the things.

Speaker 1 (28:27):
Yeah, Jay Scottie Saint Clair and I said it right, No,
Snatty's in this time and he said, yo, after y'all
doing this? So number one is the substance one of
my favorite films of the year, Horror or Not. The
Dennis Quaid eating scenes were probably the most revolting part
of the movie, which is saying something agreed, I just

(28:49):
like I loved him, but I could also see.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
The raliota of it all, like just be eating through like.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
He was doing like almost an homage to him.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
Through it and it was so good.

Speaker 3 (28:59):
Yeah, it was great.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
Ray shout out Ray two long legs. Listen the episode
we did, Smiley, listen.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
To the episode. We did see that episode. Whatever number
that is, yeah, well I did have it.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
That was a really fun one.

Speaker 3 (29:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
Number three.

Speaker 1 (29:16):
The first omen went in with very low expectations coming
off of another pregnant non chick film immaculate, but came
away reasonably impressed. I'd likened it to this year's Evil
Dead Rise. I think you and I agree, Scoots, that's
where we're friends. For the heretic, I had to include
an A twenty four outing. The third act fumbles a bit,

(29:38):
but the three leads, especially Hugh Grant, make it time
well spent.

Speaker 3 (29:42):
I will let you know I agree.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
And number five is alien romulus. Refer to the bat coverage.

Speaker 4 (29:49):
Oh, Scotty flexen flex and Scotti flexis baby.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
Worst Night Swim a horror movie can be so bad.
It's good, but there's no salvaging the cardinal sin of
being boring.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
Well, Scotty, don't read my official review for Slash Film
about Night Swim.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
Well, I agree with you, like one hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
I almost couldn't finish that movie, and I haven't been
able to not finish a movie in a long time.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
It was okay awful.

Speaker 1 (30:13):
So my other that was my worst of twenty twenty four.
And the other one was Tarot. I'm sorry, I know
you liked it. I we could hardly get through it
for our hate watch. I was ken refused. He only
watched the first ten minutes and he's.

Speaker 4 (30:25):
Like, yeah, yeahlake is a strong word, you know, it's
it's silly. It's silly in a way that I feel like,
you know, is charming enough that I was like, eh,
that's fun. So I'm not gonna Yeah, I'm not going
to get the trenches for Tarot, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (30:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
I was like, well, it's like pick a lane. You're
either a movie about Tarot cards or astrology. It's not
the same thing. No, it's not, but you know, whatever
they want to do.

Speaker 4 (30:50):
Yeah, it was clearly somebody with a pitch who's like,
you know, final Destinations already and it's whatever fifth or
sixth iteration, what can we do that's similar Tarot cards?

Speaker 3 (30:58):
Sure? Right, yeah, okay, Hana.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
Tarot deck never known before, all right, So I guess
that's that's pretty much it that's it for our yearly
wrap up. There was a lot of great movies, a
lot of things that weren't even mentioned, but you know,
it was a very strong year for her, and I'm
really excited to see what's to come because now the
bar has been raised and I'm ready to see new

(31:21):
directors and writers kind of step up. Can we please
stop with the remakes and keep making with the originals
because this year was so original.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
I really liked a lot of it.

Speaker 4 (31:31):
Well, you know, not to be a contrarian, but even
the one of the major high profile remakes in Nosparautu,
was so original in and of itself. So it's like,
there's a way forward with if you must do remakes, then,
you know, if it has to be people who obviously
have such an original take on these things, it's not
just we have the IP, let's exploit it, you know.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
So yeah, I was thinking of one specifically, what I
wasn't going to say it's name.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Oh okay, gee, I wonder what it could be.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Bell Scarsgar got to redeem himself, And I was like
these actors from nos Faratu, we were talking about it
just today, like how many of them we watched Craven
The Hunter pretty much right after Yeah, when I knew
it wasn't going to be good. But Aaron, he's very
lucky that this movie came out too, because I could
see that being a career ender. And then he also
has twenty eight years later coming out that he's you know, doing,

(32:24):
and Holt has Superman where I mean he we will
see how he is as Lex Luthor, We'll see, but
promising from how he was in nos Faratu. But it's
kind of more like what B Jay was saying, is
like he plays that a little bit perfectly, So let's see,
you know, when he is with Lex Luthor. But yeah,
a lot of people have a lot of cool stuff

(32:46):
coming up from that movie.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
Yeah, yeah, No, there's there's a real obviously, I think,
you know, both of us would agree that there's never
been a bad year for horror movies. It's just that,
you know, this past year was particularly great. But I
I'm excited for you know, the horror of twenty twenty five.
Have some great stuff coming down the line, some of
which I've been lucky enough to see you already. Uh,

(33:08):
which is going to happen in the first couple of
months of the year, so look forward to that and
uh yeah, we got some big names. We got like
you just said, twenty eight years later. I think Del
Torros Frankenstein is going to be coming out.

Speaker 5 (33:19):
To Frankenstein the Bride, you know the Hall as well.

Speaker 4 (33:26):
Oh yeah, we have the I guess the final Conjuring
movie last right, Yeah, I think, uh, Black Phone two
is supposed to come out uh next year as well.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
So yeah, and maybe Megan two point.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Zero kind of waiting in line for that one.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
I could hear the excitement in your voice. And then
what else?

Speaker 4 (33:52):
Oh well, uh, you know, like we just said, I
think do we say this on micro off? Mike soder
Bird's presence is going to drop right away.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
I think I told Jay Scotty to join us for
that one now because I definitely want to review it.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
I want to and that's only in a couple of weeks.
I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 3 (34:05):
Yeah, I know it's it's pretty right around the corner.
Josh Rubens.

Speaker 4 (34:10):
I think this is Josh Rubens right, hard Eyes, which
is I think is gonna drop Valentine's Day Sinners, which
looks incredible. If you've seen that trailer in full imax,
you know the Ryan Coogler directed Michael B.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
Jordan's starring period vampire movie.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
I was gonna say, is that vampires?

Speaker 3 (34:29):
Yeah, No, it looks yeah, that.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
Should be pretty That should be pretty interesting.

Speaker 4 (34:32):
Christopher Landon's drop, you know, the director of Happy Death
Day and and co writer, speaking of Final Destination, Final Destination,
Bloodlines and which of course we'll feature one of the
last performances of the great Tony Todd.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
So we've got like a ton of things coming down
the line. So it's really it's another exciting year for horror.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
It looks like, yeah, it'll be fun.

Speaker 1 (34:57):
It's been a fun year to have so many reviews
this year, like so many good films that we actually
wanted to talk about in between the usual episodes. Yeah,
I think it brought a lot of new listeners to
the show. And yeah, I hope we, you know, continue
to grow, share our stuff, let people know, five star reviews,
all that stuff really helps us be seen. We're going

(35:17):
to be reading five star reviews on the cast, So
if you go leave one on iTunes.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Or wherever, we'll be able to pick that up. We
were going to read one today.

Speaker 1 (35:27):
What we have as you know, what is it locked
and stocked and ready to go, but then we had
so many other things to do, so we're going to
wrap up and save that one for next week or
next time.

Speaker 4 (35:35):
Okay, and yeah, and also, you know, listeners, thank you
for joining us, and also let us know what you're liking,
what you want to hear more of. Like we said,
we love doing our retropective ded dives, We love doing
our review episodes. We love obviously having our guests on
to join us to yap about, you know, whether it's

(35:56):
a review or like our Shark exploitation episode.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
I feel like a none one is coming a none.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
One might be coming down the line.

Speaker 4 (36:03):
So yeah, definitely give us, you know, your feedback when
you can, let us know what you're liking, what you're
not liking, which you want to hear us talk about,
because we love talking about it all you can.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
You don't have to tell me what you don't like.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
You can keep that time. Okay, Yeah, you know what,
actually nevermind.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Yeah, actually, just only what you like. If you don't
like it, you're not writing it and you're not listening
to the show. So we're just going to take that
little lot. We'll take that back.

Speaker 3 (36:24):
Okay, take thanks take back. Happy New Year, Bill, Happy
New Year, Ash.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
So glad to be here and continue doing this with
you for the last couple of years, and here's.
