First ever trip to the state of South Carolina for
the Herd, and it is a successful one. The twenty
twenty five season kicking off the way the twenty twenty
four season ended with a Bison win, and this time
in dominant fashion, they hang the goose egg on the board.
They shut out the Citadel thirty eight nothing. The final
(01:17):
score and the Benison are one and oh on the
season Welcome into bonnieson Hotline with you live to break

one being on the road a lot of folks down

you can walk away with some great prizes each and
every week here on Bison Hotline, brought to you by
Keia of Fargo. I'm your host, as nice man, said
Andy Rikoff, and of course with me, former Bison defensive
end Jay Cava as well was with us on Bison
game day earlier this morning to preview this game. We
(02:20):
both thought the Bison would win, win convincingly. Neither of
us thought it would be a shutout today, but that's
what it was.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
No extremely impressive day by the Bison defense. I mean,
anytime you can go out, I don't care if you're
playing you know, little league football, high school, JV, whatever
it may be. If you can shut out the other team,
that's always a great day for a defensive defensive unit.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
And really only one almost scoring chance for the Citadel.
They got within the inside the ten went forward on
a fourth down, Logan Cop comes up with the big stop.
I love that the starters are still in there in
the fourth. They want that shut up more than anybody
probably At that point.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Well, I thought, kind of what happened is I thought
they started rotating in some of the ball. They did,
and then all of a sudden, coach polsickers like, yeah, no,
like send the starter, send the news back end, like
they're not putting this sailing.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
And I saw a cop, I saw Wolln Yep, you know, Wilson.
All of a sudden, here come the big boys change, ye,
especially when they're gonna go four down to fourth down,
not just settle for the field goal, And I liked
them go for it. The game's over right now, you
try to put a touchdown up. Anyways, they went for it,
didn't get it, and the Bison able to secure the shutout.
They win it thirty eight to nothing. And we'll break
this one down plenty here for you over the next
(03:23):
couple of hours. If you want to be a part
of the conversation, we definitely want you to be a
part of it today. Seven zero one four seven six
sixteen sixty. That is the number to call and or text.
You can text that line. You can call us there
and we'll get your comments here over the next couple
of hours. The Bison open up the season with a win.
If you're down there in Charleston, if you were at
(03:43):
Johnson Hey Goods Stadium, give us a call as well.
Let us know about what the atmosphere was like down there.
I know it was kind of rainy during pregame. It
was rainy during that first quarter, a little bit during
the second as well, and then the clouds kind of part.
It ended up being a decent game, especially weatherwise, at
least in that second half, but definitely rainy early the
first quarter. Nobody scored. It was a zero zero game,
(04:04):
but it had the feeling of one of those kind
of ugly, sloppy rock fight first game of the season
things with weather thrown in there makes it hard to
throw the football. But then things opened up for NDSU.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, that first quarter was a little I wouldn't say concerning,
but I was like, oh, I did not think we'd
be tied at zero zero. Then you obviously take in
the weather to account and you know what the conditions
were out there. But yeah, like you said, obviously after
the first quarter they turned it around and saw Cole
Payton make some you know, really nice passes through the air.
Obviously we saw we can do with his legs. I
mean that hurdle was you know, no one and Phil
(04:37):
and Sam were talking about it like that's a that's
a different level athlete when you're going vertical like that.
But yeah, you know, did what they needed to do.
We knew NDSCU was a better team than the Citadel.
The outcome of the game was never really in question.
It was just how we got there. And obviously a
slow start, gotta get off to a fast start. Maybe
we need to start saying.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Hey, that's why I said fast art start. You don't
need a fast start to win. That's what I've been
saying this entire time. It's not a key to the game.
I did knock it off to a fast, fast start,
and they still won. All the same thirty eight nothing
the final Here, we will go through some of the
final stats. I will get your stats, but that doesn't
tell the whole story, which is some highlights in there
as well. We'll answer some calls and do all of that,
but you know, stats would tell a story. I just
(05:16):
want to know from you, the former football player, you
saw Cole Payton out there. What do you take away
from from start number one for CP nine.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
I definitely think right away there, I know obviously the
wetness and throwing a wet football is hard, if anyone's
ever tried to throw it, like when leather gets wet
at slippery.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
I think we saw that.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
I didn't think there was some nerves from him right away,
but I liked how we settled in and was able
to hit you know some of those over and you
know a little sideline out route, and I was I
think I I saw what I thought I was gonna
see nothing blew me away. I think taking it for
what it's worth, playing the Citadel, how good was their
defense game?
Speaker 3 (05:51):
One of the seasons, one of the seasons for improvement.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Yes, I don't think, like all my questions aren't answered
at this point, but I think it was a good.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Start, good start, fast start.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
It was well. Col didn't get off to a f start,
but I think it was out of the blocks though.
I think it was. It was a good step in the.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Right direction, step in the right direction. Definitely had that
for Cole Payton. I know a lot of people are
going to chime in. Some people already are ugly start
for Cole Payton. We need more out of the quarterback position.
You look at the final stats, they're good. I think
he settled into the game. That was what today was
going to be. It was going to be not just
the Cole Payton, Josh Megan, Nate Tosstat, Bo Johnson, DJ Scott,
(06:27):
all these guys on offense and on defense. You know,
Finn Diggins making his first start, just settling into a game,
and it can't be easy when you're already getting ready
for game number one of a season, your first start
first chance to play as a Bison for some of
these guys, and now the weather is a factor and
things just aren't quite perfect.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Yeah, you know, it just adds to just, you know,
one more thing.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
You're already a little bit nervous. You know, you're excited.
You know, you dream of this since you're a little kid.
You're starting your first division in football game, and then
it's raining and it's just a lot of factors that
go into it, and you're you know, halfway across this country,
never played there before. Yeah, I thought it was a
good start. I mean, once again, thirty eight to zero win.
I mean, we can pick that all we want. Yeah,
(07:07):
there's half the team's lost to day. They wish they
could be in the same spot we're at right now.
And that's the difference of just expectations. Some teams will
win ugly seventeen to fourteen against the team they thought
they were a lot better then, and everyone will praise
them and say you're great. Whereas NBACU win thirty eight nothing,
probably be some people wishing no I could have been cleaner,
but thirty eight nothing is obviously a great win. Things
to improve on, some penalties and things like that that
(07:27):
put the ball on the ground a couple of times,
didn't turn it over. I just put it on the ground,
but got back on it. Did force to turn over
there as well, Logan Cop. Of course, Johnny on the spot,
guys always around of football. Donovan Willen had a chance
to pick it up, wasn't able to Logan Cop got
it on that film of recovery and then a few
plays later Ndsu was able to punch that one in.
But here we go off and running first Bodies and
(07:48):
Hotline of the Year stop on out North Fargo location
here at Applebee's. Chance to win a lot of prizes,
some tickets, some sweatshirts and t shirts as well a
different free giveaways here at Appleby's. I think there will
be every single week. After some buis and football games,
we'll also keep our eyes here on some other games
going on across the country, including one that just got
going South Dakota on the road and aims against Iowa State.
(08:11):
The Cyclones in early seven to nothing lead on the Coyotes,
but the Coyotes are driving across midfield here on their
first offensive possession, first break for us, We'll come back
break down this season opening victory for the herd when
we come back on the other side.

Thirty eight Nothing to Win for NDSU today over the Citadel,
the bindings are one and oh on the season on
the March to Music City, I think that's what we're
gonna call it, like that, the March to Music City,
trying to get to Nashville, the Dashed nash Ooh, I
like that one too. If you got any thoughts on
what we can say to try and get to a
national championship in Nashville, let us know that as well.
(12:54):
Seven zero one four seven six sixteen sixty, I will
put you in charge of something, Jay Cavam for the
remainder of this season. When we get to the semi
final at home against whoever decides to still be playing
football at that point other than US, yep, and we
win that game, what song do we play? Oh? Because
we're not playing in Texas this year for a national championship.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
I think, just like for energy and like a younger generation,
I think Broadway Girls by Morgan wall And would be
really good.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
I just don't know if that's gonna fit the crowd inside.
That is true, that is, but I mean it works
a little bit so not right now, but like the
season that's something we're gonna need to know. By the
time we get to December, I'll be I'll be texting
with Matt Larson to see you.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
Yeah, we'll be. We'll figure that out.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Matt Larson could dance Broadway Girls upfront or something like
on the field. I think they could work. We'll find out.
We'll find out what we gotta do for that as
the season goes on, especially if we're gonna be winning
thirty eight nothing each and every week like we did today.
Offense was looking good. Defense was phenomenal throughout this game
for the Bison. Did not allow the Citadel to cross
midfield in that first half, had three different sacks from
three different players, Toby and Nate getting on the board
(14:00):
with the game number one. How about our guy in
the middle of the Bison defensive line, Keenan Wilson, We've
been talking about for a while. He got a sack
as well, and newcomer jack Ileano getting in on the
act as well. The transfer from Albany in that first half,
and then a whole host of them in the the
second half, including Elijah Wayne, a big freshman d tackle
(14:22):
from Omaha, Nebraska.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Yep, no, everyone has completely forgot who were a number
fifty four before him?
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Yep, who was that who most starts?
Speaker 5 (14:31):
Yeah, I don't know who he is. That his name
Elijah Wayne. I saw him.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
I was at the fall camp practice probably three weeks ago.
He does not look like an FC. I'm like, I
saw him walk by me. I'm like, this guy should
be playing at like Clemson, right he's he's as different?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Yeah, him and then go on the offensive line. Ryan
Babbitt's the guy you're mentioning pre game, but already at
three h five if not more. Imagine Coach Kramer and
coach Nap get their hands on him for a year
with those you know who could do with those those
frames as well.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
And that's just a testament to what coach p and
his staff is doing in the recruiting trail. Like those
are guys that you I'm sure they had looks late
from bigger schools, but to keep that commitment and keep
them from flipping late to a different to a power
for school has been huge for the staff.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
We do want your phone calls today seven zero one,
four seven six, sixteen sixty. Let's go to the phone
lines now. Tadak the Polish Bison first in line on
game number one post game show number one of the season.
That is an honor that is all alone to you, sir.
Congratulations first phone call of the season. What do you
want to talk about?
Speaker 14 (15:34):
Hi, guys? So, first of all, shout out to the
Fizon Nation. Showed up big numbers from throughout the whole
country and they were cheering loud and hearing during particularly
in the first quarter. The other thing, what I know
is Baytan can throw. I mean he's proved it very well,
especially with this beautiful touch them and I think we
found ourselves a really good tight end and obviously the
(15:57):
defense fantastic to day hang up the.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
List and that Biden, Go Bison. Thank you, Ted Dak
first phone call of the year. Uh yeah, that's a
storyline coming in. And by no means whether Cole Peyton
had come out today and thrown one of fifty for
six yards or if he had gone fifty to fifty
for five hundred and thirty yards. You cannot come onto
(16:19):
the show today and say he is amazing or he
is bad. It's one game. It's the first game of
a season. No one's gonna have their final story written.
We've seen that throughout the season if you saw it.
You know when your senior season with some struggles in
the regular season and then you turn things on, you
make a nice run in the playoff. Unfortunate came up
just a little bit short. So you can't have final
say on things quite yet, right, But overall, I'll say
(16:40):
this about Cole Payton, where there's some throw, some slightly
off target ones in that first quarter, Yes, with a
wet ball, wet field and some nerves in there as well.
I thought that touched on past de Rajus. But the
only spot that possibly could have been and that was
his unbelievable what he was able to do there. Guy,
like I think Phil was saying on the badcast, he
was like, he's been here for a decade. It's close
to it. But how great is it if you're Cold Payton,
(17:01):
not only to have a Bryce Lance, but to have
someone like Raja just so dependable out there at receiver.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Well that's one thing too, with you know, cold Paint
like he doesn't. You don't have to be not every
throw is gonna have to be perfect this year. You
have Mackay Collins, you have Bryce Lance, you have Raja
like you have a stable of receivers that can go
and make plays for you, which takes a lot of
pressure off coal on some of those Like you don't
have to be, you know, extremely precise every throw. Just
get it there, get it where the defender can't get it,
and those guys will go up and make a play.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
And I think we touch on this in the the
pregame show. We all love the throw to Rasha, great throw,
want more of those, but those plays are great. We
like the mundane plays too, And I thought as the
game went on, Cole Payton did a good job of
making the mundane look easy. Like we say it in basketball,
you better make your layups. You better make your free throws.
(17:46):
You know, those are the gimmes. You have to be
able to make those. You can build off of that.
But I felt like as that game went on, the
free throws and the layups he was making pretty consistently.
Will build on it from there.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
At that point, Yeah, you just started to get more
confident with it, see right away, Like you said earlier,
just the nerves. I don't know, if there's the ball,
we could have been a plethora, plethora of things. Nice word, yeah,
thank you, But yeah, he just hit the nail on
the head there. Just make the easy throws easy, don't
try to complicate him. And then once you start getting
in the rhythm, getting the timing down, and then that's
(18:17):
when you can go deep and take shots guys like
Bryce and Roger.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
I almost said Trey there. Wow.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Wow, Trey is Bryce's older brother, I know by the way. Yeah.
And then the other point there from from tadak it
looks like we got ourselves a tight end. I think
we got a number of them. Finn Diggins was the starter.
We saw. Carson Williams. I think he is referring though
to a re castle. But a nice catch there in
the the second half. I think it was late third quarter,
early fourth quarter. Another guy from right here, Fargo South
(18:43):
High School, Fargo, North Dakota and Nada. The guy don't
Did you play against him in high school? No, I
don't think so, right he.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
Would have been No, I was quite a bit older.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Yeah, so now you're coaching people like that. But another
guy right here locally, you know what it's like to
be the local kid on the team. He's a little
bit of time, just trying to figure it, get his
footing in under him a little bit. You know, can
I compete at this level? Some people when a guy
gets signed from local high school, it's like, oh, it's
a great local story. I'll see if he ever plays right. Well,
Reese is on the field, He's making impact plays, and
(19:12):
that room is kind of up for grabs. I feel like,
still early on in this season, and who's going to
go out there and make plays on the field when
it matters.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
Yeah, very much so.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Obviously Reese came in from Fargo South. He was he's
a walk on, preferred walk on, and you do hear
those things like you're even your own buddies and your
friend You're like, oh yeah, like just like the walk on,
Like give him an opportunity because he's a hometown kid.
And then for him to like, you know, bow through
that red shirt his first year, work with Kramer and
Nap in the weight room and then be able to
come out and gain one of his red shirt ear
and make plays is awesome. And you know, like Tadak said,
I think as a downfield threat, he's a bigger body.
(19:42):
Apparently he's one of the faster guys on the team.
I think Izola was saying, he was like top twenty
on the forty yard dash. That could be like more
of a downfield Josh Babbage Noah Gendorf type deep.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Threat right in the seams, right right through the middle
of the field, and went up and had to jump
to catch that one as well. So I got up
there and made a nice play. And we'll see how
he continues to rest of this season. But that is
a position to go. I'll be watching here during the
non conference an early portion of conference as well. Okay,
who's separating themselves He's maybe taken advantage of because I
think a lot of them are going to have opportunities.
They got to take advantage of those opportunities, right, and
(20:13):
I think he was able to at least take advantage
of it there. How about Bob, who is currently leaving
Charleston down there at the game, Bob giving us a
call here on Bison Hotline. Bob, thanks to the call,
appreciate it. What do you want to talk about.
Speaker 15 (20:26):
Hey, guys? Well, aside from the game being really wet
in the beginning, Cole looked a little bit nervous out there,
we'll call it that. And when you compare that to
Nate when he came in He looked really sharp on
his first half dozen throws that he made, and so
that stood out when you're watching it live. But it
(20:49):
was good to see a number of penalties were an
issue from my perspective, but beyond that, I thought it
was a good game to start the season.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Bob, can you tell us what was the turnout of
bys and fans there at Johnson Hey Good Stadium? What
was it? What was it looking like there?
Speaker 15 (21:04):
I would say there was probably about twenty five hundred.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
That's awesome. There you go, Thank you, Bob, appreciate it.
Enjoy your time down there. Are you going to Nashville
as well?
Speaker 15 (21:14):
I am thinking about it right now.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
I am okay, So that means yes, thank you, Bob.
Appreciate the phone call here on Bison Hotline. Great to
hear over to. That's what they were saying on the
broadcast too. With the salmon. Phil look like over two thousand,
at least two thousand buys and fans on both sides
of the stadium. So it's like a really good, you know,
turnout for NDSU fans. And that was why, you know,
Todd Phelps, Matt Larson, you know, you throw in the
(21:37):
coach at the time being, matt Ens, why do you
kind of schedule this game? I think it is a
destination game, which is something fun for the fans that
is a Citadel a premier program. No, they're not, let's
be honest about it. But this is a spot to
go watch a game that NDSU had never played in
this state before and never played this team before. You're
kind of a destination game that feeds into Nashville coming
up next week.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (21:57):
Absolutely, I think getting I mean, I don't know how
many my I was the way the Citadel or Charleston is,
but to get twenty five hundred guy or guys, twenty
five hundred Bison fans down there, I think that's unbelievable.
In just another testament to you know how well Bison
Nation travels.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Absolutely one hundred percent. So brought up there that Nathan
Hayes looked really comfortable when he came in, and I
would agree, Nathan Hayes looked really good. Yeah, and we
expect Nathan Hayes to look good. That he looked good
last year. He's a good quarterback. It's that's a big
luxury to have that you can say we've got a backup.
We feel really really confident in as well. That's a
good thing to have already at this point of the season.
I'll just say this because I think we're we're already
(22:32):
trying to start a QB controversy week one. It's easy
to be really confident coming into a game when you're up.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
By thirty points.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
It's a little different when you start a game at
zero zero, right yeah, yeah, and just not a shot
at Nathan Hayes. He looked great, but you should look
great there.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
It's kind of like that, you know in bass what
the six man like.
Speaker 4 (22:47):
It's a little bit easier to come into the game
once the game has already been established. Obviously, do I
wish Colpayton would have came out just like Nathan days
and when like five for five right away, just slinging it. Yes,
But it was different circumstances, and I just think it's
it's a good thing. It's a good problem to have
that our backup came in and looked sharp, because that
then we just know, you know, knock on, what if
something were to happen to our starter, we do have
a guy that can come in and we're not gonna
(23:07):
miss a beat in the offense.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
Yep, So Nathan, heyes, look good and that's a good
thing to have and in case you need it. And
for the future of this program, he's you know, potentially
you're starting quarterback next year as well, and we'll see
what happens throughout the rest of this season. Also, Mark
in America, a man who has been waiting for this
game for far too long. I bet you enjoyed this
one a lot, sir. Thanks for the call today, Mark
in America with us on Buyson hotline, really just marking
(23:31):
the Carolinas and you had to be enjoying this one today, sir.
Speaker 16 (23:34):
Down there, guys, I absolutely enjoyed it. You know, even
though I got a shower in the hotel room, they
had the same kind of water pressure coming down. In
the first quarter, everything was soaked. That wasn't on the pontos.
So I will not fall gold pate for a tough
first quarter or just the buys and offense struggling. It was.
(23:58):
It was heavy enough.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
Brain.
Speaker 16 (23:59):
It's the kind of rainy you you go into the
clubhouse and to the nineteenth pole instead of finishing finishing
a round. Nathan Hayes did look he looked very last
really sharp. I will say that I think what's gonna
happen this next week is there's gonna be some false
start drills, which was, uh, I don't know, call it
(24:24):
first week, call it, call it some some youth on
the on the front line. But we had three fall
starts that, uh, you know again, like you said, our
expectations are high. But I know that, even jed Ra
Sear said after the game, because they're gonna be working
on fall fall starts.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
This week, Yeah, I sure will be. Mark, Thanks for
the call, appreciate giving us some time here on Bison Hotline.
Enjoy the time down there in Charleston and in the
Carolina as a place I know is near and dear
to his heart. A frequent caller here on Bison Hotline. Yeah,
fall starts were an issue, no doubt about that. But
I think when we wait, when you start a season,
no matter what if you've got a lot of returners
(25:03):
or not, especially though, when you don't have as many
returners and only five returners on the offense and three
new offensive linemen, things you can expect in the first
couple of weeks, whether you like it or not, is
fall starts. Probably a few missed alignments where you get
an illegal formation or something like that, and maybe a
delay of game here or there with the new quarterback
as well. So that was kind to be expected and
(25:25):
not a good thing needs to be cleaned up going
forward here. But that's what it is.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
Yeah, I agree with what you know, Mark said, like,
obviously we have an extremely high standard and it doesn't
matter if your first start, your fiftieth start. You gotta
play to that standard. The standard doesn't slow down or
doesn't lord to no one or to anyone. But uh,
like you said too, I mean it's kind of to
be expected. You don't want it to be expected just
with the you know, new faces on the old line,
new face.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
I don't think we had a delay a game or
an illegal formation.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
No, it is good, which is good, but yeah, I
mean you did hit the nail on the head there, Mark,
with the standard is the standard and that doesn't even
get fixed.
Speaker 5 (25:55):
Doesn't matter if.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
You're a first year player starting your first game or
you played in fifty games and you're an old that
you gotta play to the standard, and I'm sure that'll
get fixed that practice this week.
Speaker 3 (26:05):
What is the false start drill of choice?
Speaker 5 (26:07):
You think, I'm sure they're just gonna have to run
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
That's the drill for ever fall. We're running sprints. Yeah,
that's just the drill. I guess you would say at
that one, more like a negative reinforcement. By the way,
a couple other games going on right now. How about
South Dakota and Iowa State the Cyclones. They had something
dialed up for the yoha's under the gate. They threw
about a seventy yard pass on their first play. All
(26:31):
of the game went down inside the ten. They would
score about a play or two later, take a seven
to nothing lead. Then USD fights all the way back.
They go down and score, make it seven to seven.
Now Iowa State has just scored a touchdown as well.
They are up fourteen to seven with about a minute
and a half to play in that first quarter down
in aames, this is a potential upset special for Jake Kills.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
I have that. I like South Dakota. I thought, you know,
just with the veteran quarterback.
Speaker 4 (26:57):
Obviously, I know their entire old line kind of hit
the portal and lift, but uh, interesting game to start
A couple of touchdowns. Hopefully had the over in that one.
You got twenty one points in the first quarter, so
overs looking good.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Yeah, a lot of points early on. I think it's
an explosive offense defense going through some changes there, defensive
minded head coach with Travis Johansson his first time through.
We'll get the SD issue later on tonight at six
o'clock against Sack State, So that will be starting well
after we are off the air here on Bison Hotline.
But if you have any comments or questions, seven zero

You take a look at some of the finals in
this one for the Bison overall, Jake, Obviously, the shutout
is the main one there. You don't go up any points.
That's a great one. Only allowed them across midfield once,
only a handful of first downs in that first half,
(33:10):
I think only three of them, and in the second
half wasn't a whole lot more. What was working for
the Bison defensively in this game other than you're going
up against the Citadell team. That's up. Face it. They
weren't going to pass at all. They played multiple quarterbacks.
They only threw it twice in the first half. That
was that. But what was working for the Bison on defense?
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Yeah, I think with make it or not even us
making them them making themselves very a one dimensional, just
run heavy team, we were able to you know, stack
the box and you know, hit rum fits extremely fast.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
Guys tackled well.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
I know that was one of the things we talked
about in the pregame show was you know, how are
we going to tackle?
Speaker 5 (33:41):
In Game one?
Speaker 4 (33:42):
I thought we tackled probably the best I can remember
in a season Oprah in a while. And I just
think Nate Staling was extremely consistent in the middle. Logan
Cop was Logan Cop. We knew what we were gonna
get with him. And then the front four played well
at Jackson Duton have for Logan Larsen, Kean Wilson and
then Toby and A and A and cut mccow'slyn are
solid and I just think they everyone did their job
(34:03):
and didn't overthink anything that didn't No one got you know,
gapped out or push out of their gap and there's
they tackled well.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
Tackling I think was a big issue last year. We
were talking about that throughout this season. That was something
grand Olsen said in our pregame conversation. They really wanted
to improve on and until we do that, we can't
be taken seriously as an elite defense. It did seem
like with a team that wants to do some misdirections,
some option stuff, the tackling was pretty good today.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
Yeah, I just thought, and the easiest way to be
a better tackling team is get more hats to the football.
Speaker 10 (34:30):
Right.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
If you're making one on one tackles all game, eventually
someone they have scholarship players too, they're going to make
a make or you miss or and break a tackle.
And I think we had eleven hats of the football
more often than not. And it's a lot easier to
tackle when you got through your buddies next to you.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Sure was for NDSU today. They get to win thirty
eight to nothing over the Citadel. Bryce lanced not a
huge day, but Rajah Nelson has the big catch to
the thirty one yard touchdown reception. That's gonna be something
to watch this year. Is Bryce had an amazing year
last year, and he's the best receiver in the subject
from my money. There's some other good ones too, but
he's got to be up there when you're mentioning the
(35:04):
best receivers in the entire country for the FCS and
frankly some of the best FBS receivers too. But with
the depth of this receiving unit, a day where he
doesn't really touch the football whole lot, didn't get targeted
a whole lot either had to drop in there whatever
first game, but you still put up this amount of
yards through the year, over two hundred yards. There. You
still have Rajah Nelson connecting on some Makai Collins, Reese
(35:25):
Kessel that we mentioned. The depth of different weapons to
use is gonna be really impressive throughout this season.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
Yeah, I think that's not something obviously. I'm sure Bryce
will have breakout games or big games this year, but
defenses are going to key in on him this year
and that's just gonna open up, you know, opportunities for
guys like Raja or McKay or Chris you know. So,
I do think is Bryce gonna have a better year
this year than last year? I would hope not, because
I would hope defenses are gonna bracket him and double
(35:52):
cover him. But on the flip side of that, that's
gonna leave one on one coverage for guys like Raja
On And like I said earlier, but I don't think
it's anything to be too concerned about Bryce Lance when
his numbers called, when he's able to make a play,
he'll make that play. But like we were talking earlier,
Cole Payton, you don't need to force the ball to Bryce.
You have you know, five to six other options that
are more than capable of making big plays downfield, and.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
That's gonna be a luxury that he and Dan Larson
has as well throughout this season. Yeah, when you're going
from you know, a quarterback of cam Miller's experience and pedigree,
it's gonna be hard to have the same kind of
season you're a receiver going to whoever was going to be.
And that's not a shot of cold Payton. That's more
of a respect of cam Miller type of thing. And
even if you had cam Miller again to put up
the same numbers, Bryce died last year of over one
(36:33):
thousand yards seventy five receptions, seventeen touchdowns and pretty hard
to tie those numbers again. This sure, but doesn't mean
he's not going to be a good player and have
some really really good numbers. Today wasn't quite that day.
How About on the running back side, seeing what Perico
was able to do a couple of rushing touchdowns. We
got our first look in a game of DJ Scott
kind of physical downhill running back Owinden Johnson getting in
(36:54):
there at that Cort has like Grant, looked really good
in the few carries he got late in this game
as well. The running back room that I think for Springbow.
He said, Man, we got Brika. That's kind of thin
in terms of guys that have contributed and difference makers there.
Looks like it's a little bit deeper right now.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
Yeah, I thought Brika played extremely well. He ran hard,
just how we knew we would. He's definitely gonna be
the bellcow in that backfield, but having guys like you
said to come in and spell him, I think Owen
Johnson's gonna find himself a spot on you know, that
third down back.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
He's really good in pass where we can get out
and catch the ball a little bit. On the last
year exactly like.
Speaker 4 (37:24):
A TK Marshall and then you know, just you know,
like you said, the other you know cast of characters
we have in there. I think it's gonna be a
really good mix. But I do think, you know, that
was one thing Paul's like did mention when we came
in here from why only is he wants a running
back on a billboard.
Speaker 5 (37:39):
We're not.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
It's gonna be Brika is gonna get the lion's share
that carries as we get in the conference play and
throughout the season.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
Yeah, he will be. And I think he got Cole Peyton.
They'll run the ball quite a bit as well. We'll
see that out of the quarterback running game. But it's
nice to have a few other options in there. I
think DJ Scott's a really good player, someone that will
contribute throughout this season at a high level. And I
agree with you on Owen Johnson being kind of that
third down back role for Indie issue. On the offensive
side of this, you will see how Money Mitchell works
his way in that freshman out of the Chicago, Illinois
(38:06):
area as well. By the way, the Yoats just turned
the ball over so a deep pass by Bowman picked
off by Iowa State. The Cyclones will take over deepen
their own territory somewhere around like the five or so
yard line. About wobbler thrown there by them. Can't have tipped.
Speaker 5 (38:22):
You can't have that turnover in the high red zone.
You're putting together good offensive drive.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
You gotta you'd hope he's gotta be a six year.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Quarterback would be a little bit smarter than that, right
playing as.
Speaker 3 (38:30):

As well, put a little bit wait, and you know,
I think that's a good thing too, because he's obviously
don't have Marty Brown.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
Five ten, two thirteens where he's listed at.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
I'll give you five to eleven.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
I got you, brother, But uh no, And like obviously
last year we had now Jerry riceword winner Marty Brown
on the backfield that Brico was splitting carries with.
Speaker 5 (44:59):
So it'll be interesting to see, you.
Speaker 4 (45:01):
Know, as we go further along in the season and
he starts, you know, playing against some higher level defense
in the FCS. Let's not let's be honest, This Citadel
defense wasn't the best to see, you know, where he's
gonna be at. You know, come, you know, early November
into December as a running back for the Bison.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
Yeah, twelve attempts the most of any player today including
Cole Payton. Twelve attempts eighty yards six point six yards
per carry. We will take that. Sorry, I believe my
math wasn't very good, but times three is the first
time sounds like a first down every two times you
test the bulb. And also two touchdowns on the day.
Had a long of twenty four yards. He is again
our dri Cool performer of the game. Dakota Refrigeration now
(45:41):
known as DRI helps helps athletes succeed behind the scenes,
from the training room to the dining room, from melt
to medicine, ice to ice cream. DRI has been serving Minnesota, Montana,
and the Dakotas for over forty years online at dak
ref dot com. You get that out of Barrika every
single game will be in a really, really good spot.
He did. By the way, I also have a reception
(46:03):
for twenty yards, so pretty good stuff. Out of Perrika
all day long. Has one hundred total yards and we
had in receiving and rushing there for game number one.
Some other stats for you in this game, let's go
through those quickly. Before we go back to the phone lines. Obviously,
Cole Payton kind of the storyline of this one. We
wanted to see what he could do out there. Ten
completions on sixteen attempts, so ten of sixteen that's sixty
(46:25):
two and a half percent completion percentage, one hundred and
ninety two yards and a touchdown. Did not throw an interception,
was not sacked in this game. A lot of that
goes to the quarterback, also to the offensive line with
three new starters, is not up a sack in game
number one, Nathan Hayes comes in. He goes five to
five for seventy one yards and a touchdown. Extremely efficient.
Obviously touched on pass to Isaiah Saint Romain of the
(46:46):
young Wilson Williston State of North Dakota receiver for a
ton about him in fall camp. He had a really
really good camp. Unfortunately for him, it's a stasher. I mean,
you're like the ninth receiver because you've got Bryce and
McKay and Chris Harris as a captain, and Raja and
Jackson Williams and Isaiah Saint Ramams is going to be
a piece here for NDSU. Had one reception for fifteen
yards and a touchdown today just in a really really
(47:09):
good wide receiver room here at NDSU receiving wise Rajah
Nelson two receptions sixty yards and a touchdown. Chris Harris
two receptions thirty six yards. Four receptions for Bryce Lance
thirty four yards out there, eight point five per reception
for Bryce actually had the most receptions of anybody on
the team, so said down day, but he still had
the most receptions of anyone on the team, right, league, Yeah, right,
(47:31):
you're doing well there. Reese Kessel won for thirty one.
It's a good per catch average, right, thirty one yards
per reception. Really good stuff there. Out of the Fargo
South product McKay Collins one reception for twenty, Barika the
one for twenty as well. DJ Scott one reception nineteen yards.
I think he'll be a factor out of the backfield
Doll in the receiving game based off fall camp. The
guy can catch, especially some screen passes or something and
(47:52):
can make some plays some yards out of that. Logan
Conklin another North Dakota guy, why not why not? Sception
sixteen yards. Isaiah Saint Romain that one reception for a
touchdown on fifteen yards and Jackson Williams onon reception for
twelve yards there as well. Was good to see Trey
Drake also get in the game late, the third quarterback
from Jamestown, New York. Did not throw a pass, but
(48:13):
was in the game. Rushing wise, Cole Payton eleven attempts,
one hundred and three yards gained on the ground net
of one oh one. Barika again twelve carries, seventy nine
net yards on the ground. DJ Scott ten for forty
three another really good per carry average of four point three.
Cortez la Grant probably the fastest running back on the room.
If he can get to that second level, it's gonna
(48:34):
be hard for anyone to catch him, but it's hard
for the Bison to catch him in Flould camp. He
is quick, it's just a matter of getting through that
initial push. Five attempts, twenty two yards. He's also a
transfer into this Bison program. Trey Drake one carry for
four yards. We saw Miles Money Mitchell, that freshman who's
making an impact. Came in early last year last semester
and was in for spring ball for carries for four yards.
(48:56):
Nathan Hayes won for three Owen Johnson two carries for
two yards. Just feel good for him, you know, round
of applause virtually on the radio show for Owen Johnson
gone for a year and a half. It's a really
gruesome and nasty knee injury numbers are whatever they are,
that doesn't matter in the fact that he got back
on the football Fiel. It's pretty awesome for oj.
Speaker 5 (49:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Just I remember, I mean that happened at und my
senior year when he went down and it was like
there's acl and ligament injuries. His was a step above that.
And just to get him back and get him out
on the field playing.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Football again, it's just it's great to see one of
those multiple ligaments, multiple things going aroung with the knee
kind of all at the same time. Always makes me
as a Vikings person. They got like Teddy Bridgewater, everything
in your knee was just messed up. And great to
see Owen back out there. He will be a factor
I think for NDSU offensively throughout this season. On the
defensive side, Nathaniel stealing a quiet seven tackles out there
(49:47):
leading NDSU and tackles his first game at the middle linebacker.
I would just see from the young man not so
young anymore, but the first time starter out there at
the middle linebacker.
Speaker 4 (49:56):
Just extremely solid, a really good job getting all eleven
guys on the same page, which has the linebacker. That
is your number one job is getting the call from
you know, Coach Olson and getting everyone lined up and
ready to go. And then just a solid tackler, I
mean putting his chest on people, not you know, arm
tackles are bad in college football. Putting his chest on
people and bring guys to the ground and I just
you know, it was a really steady game from them.
Speaker 5 (50:15):
That's what you want from a middle linebacker. Just be
extremely steady.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
Did have a half tackle for loss as well. Logan
Cops six tackles one tackle for a loss or one
and a half tackles for loss that have a fumble
recovery as well. Just Logan Cop always around a football
somehow he is right there for the fumble recovery. Ray
James coming in there on the second half backup linebacker.
He had five tackles in this game. Ryan Jones with
four of them. I had three tackles a piece as
well for Duton Effort McCaslin. The sacks in this game
(50:41):
for ENDSU. You had Toby Anane with a sack. You
had we mentioned a couple other guys, Jackie Leono, Keenan
Wilson with a sack, Elijah Wayne getting in there on
a sack as well. Those are gonna be some of
the players to watch out for on that defensive line.
It was good to see a consistent push and a
consistent pressure from guys there. Calton mccastlyon was on the
backfield couple of times too.
Speaker 4 (51:00):
Yeah, and just have a number of guys that can
get the job done so I can stay fresh. And
you know, the rotation at d line that NSU has
been doing since you know, back when Kyle and even
before him, when those guys are playing Kyle Manuel, that
is that's a that's a huge factor, especially as you know,
the gruesome, grueling season of a Missouri Valley Football Conference
conference season, you know, starts winding down. It's it's huge
to be able to you know, rotate guys in and out.
Speaker 3 (51:21):
One guy we're still very very high on, only had
one tackle today. Donovan Woolan didn't have like the first
game whatever, didn't have that stellar performance we were looking
for out of them. I didn't have that maybe game
breaking play, but you didn't need that in this game.
You were't gonna have an opportunity in pass coverage. I
think that's where he's gonna really excel. He's going to
be awesome in coverage, the athlete that he is. You
say that a team that wasn't gonna throw it today
(51:42):
and never really give you a chance. So there you go.
Some of the final stats for the bodies and in
game number one before we take a break, Mike in
Sue Falls giving us a call here on Bison Hotline. Mike,
you're here with us on the show. Thanks for giving
us a call. What do you want to talk about?
Speaker 26 (51:57):
Yeah, not on my way home like usual, but actually
calling from Sue Falls. A great game today, God a
great year after the awesome victories. Overest you it's too
much better at work that way, and I would just
like to talk about one here, what you guys thought
about the offensive line play, and particularly interested in Meet
tossed and by the way, folks, it's tossed it on
(52:19):
roll at. I know all that said correctly, and so
just just want to hear how you thought Meet tossed
it played and the rest of the team and I'll
I'll hang up and listen to you guys take care.
Speaker 3 (52:30):
Of Thank you, Mike, Yeah, thanks for the call up.
You enjoyed it down there, and Sue falls First off,
no sacks give it up. So that's always a positive
for the entire offensive line. You'll face better defensive lines
and more pressure consistently than you did today. But no
sacks is a good thing. Fall starts were an issue
for the entire offensive line. But what'd you think of
the play of the line and Nate, you.
Speaker 5 (52:51):
Know, I thought they're they're solid.
Speaker 4 (52:52):
It's just, oh, line is such a chemistry thing right now,
you're hearing it like Jalen Sendell and Greg are gonna
start next to each other for the Seahawks. Those guys
have so many bank reps playing next to each other. Obviously,
these guys had a lot of reps.
Speaker 5 (53:03):
Through spring ball and fall camp, but those games like
this was game one of this unit playing together, and
that's a huge thing on the offensive line, is just
having that chemistry between all five of all five of
the offensive lineman.
Speaker 4 (53:14):
But yeah, I mean it was. It was good, especially
to the sack point. Having a quarterback like Cole Payton.
If one guy gets beat, you're probably okay. Right, one guy,
I don't think he's gonna sack Cole Payton very often.
He's shifting enough where you can step up in the pocket,
he can get outside the pocket exactly. So that's kind
of a you know, a safety blanket for this old
line is you just can't have two guys get beat.
(53:35):
Cole Payton gets two guys with pressure in his face,
odds are they're probably gonna be able to get him
down to the ground. But I know there's one I
was thinking of, you know, Josh Megan got beat on
the edge of the speed rushing cop. Payton was just
able to step up get outside the pocket, and I
think he ran for fifteen yards. But it was a
solid performance from the old line. But like I said,
it's gonna take time for these guys to start building
chemistry and log those game reps to get better.
Speaker 3 (53:55):
Definitely room to grow, Definitely can be better. But hey,
they moved well down the line, down the field. Let
should say they ran for a ton of yards in
this game. So that's all positive and thought. For the
most part, offensive line looked good. You got to correct
some stuff, especially the false starts me be a little
bit better in pass protection, but overall, first game, we'll
take that from a young, less experienced Bison offensive line
(54:15):
in game number one of the season. Take another break here.
We'll come back at our play of the game for you.
Then we'll take a look around the country and update

Lance into the boundary right.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
De high snapped to Peyton, rushes on, he loads up,
looks long, fires left side of.
Speaker 3 (59:14):
The end zone.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
Oh my goodness, a diving cats and a pison touchdown.
Rajah Nelson, the sixth year senior, says, I am back
a diving touchdown on the left side, A beautiful throw
by Peyton, and then dsu leads at sixteen to nothing.
Speaker 3 (59:35):
What a past. That one was out of the arm
of Cole Peyton, to the hands of Rajah Nelson and
into the end zone. That was the point where we're like, okay,
this one's it's done. Yeah, you know, we kind of
knew it going in. We kind of knew it before
that play, after due had already been on the scoreboard
a couple of times, they're up ten nothing. That one
was really like, okay, seventeen we got we got this
(59:56):
one and Cole Peyton looks like he has a heck
of an arm at him there as well, thirty plus
yards on the money, diving right into the hands of
Rajah and Nelson. That is our highlight of the game.

to make col Payton feel pretty good?
Speaker 5 (01:00:30):
Yeah, I just think too.
Speaker 4 (01:00:31):
I mean, just you saw his excitement after Rajah made
the unbelievable play and just to see that excitement kind
of almost maybe a deep breath from Colporton and be like,
all right, hey, all you guys saying that I can't
throw the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:00:42):
Look at this, you know pretty good, But uh no.
Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
It was fun just to have a guy like Raja back,
Like everyone would say, he's been there for just just
under a decade.
Speaker 3 (01:00:51):
I think it was there. You came in the year
after he got here, two.
Speaker 4 (01:00:54):
Years he was in my he was in twenty twenty,
so he was a COVID class so he was. But yeah,
he's been around for a while. And just like we
were talking earlier, just the cast of characters in that
wide receiver room, it's gonna be a different guy every game,
I bet. I mean, you got Ricelands, Raja, Chris Harris
mkaik It just the list goes on. Jack, Yeah, and
it's just you know, I think, don't forget about my guy,
(01:01:16):
John Gors. I'm a Shanley spweshert on today. But we're
gonna say it till we get boom in the face.
But it's just the fact of the matter that we're
just that deep out wide receiver this year. There's any
one of those guys can go off on any given Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:01:27):
And Raja was really banged up. He was going through
some tough injuries fighting through that growing injury. Only played
the four regular season games and then played in the playoffs,
but he had to gut it out of every one
of those playoff games, especially and talking to him a
little bit during the offseason when he got the surgery,
he got everything taking care of that he needed to.
He just feels so much better. He feels like himself,
feels more confident. And he was a confident player to
(01:01:49):
begin with him and was even last year. And he
made some big plays. I think about the catches he
made against stsu right to help them win that game
in the regular season and come with the two touchdown receptions.
But to say that you know, he's a confident player
begin with, but now feels even more confident, feels more
like himself, feels like he can be a whole new
type of player that's going to be a weapon to
half for Subste. Yeah, looking forward to seeing what Rajah
(01:02:09):
knows he can do. That one is our highlight of
the game again, brought to you by Northland Vapor and CBD.
Let's check in on Facebook our Bison sixteen sixty facebook page.
You can go there and comment your thoughts on this game.
NDSU wins at thirty eight to nothing over the Citadel
and the comments are kind of what we thought they
would be today. Hayes has a rocket arm. We have
(01:02:30):
a little bit of a pretty good backup quarterback in
the making there in Hayes. Another one here from Reid
saying thinking I'm going to be paying close attention to
Isaiah Saint Romain for the next four or five years.
Love that one from Reid on our Facebook page. Definitely
like Isaiah Saint Remain. The only issue for him is
he's buried on that super team wide receiver depth chart
right now. But a heck of a player as well.
(01:02:52):
This one from Bison Nation as well. On our Facebook page,
Cole Peyton touchdown pass to Raja was a beauty. Anyone
asking for a bat against a choice wordero to thirty
eight team needs needs a clue whor doesn't have a
clue whatever he's trying to say, they're basically what a beauty?
Anybody asking him for the backup I think doesn't have
(01:03:12):
a clue type of thing. So we're split on the
first game. Who would have thought that from our fan base,
great stuff out there. We do appreciate everybody for chiming in,
Dan saying great job, buys in, great game from Karen
as well, David saying fantastic start, go Buison looking forward
to the rest of the season. Same with a lot
of other people out there, and Darren saying we have
two very capable quarterbacks. I would agree with you there.
(01:03:33):
I think Nathan has is a very capable quarterback and
even saw Trey Drake got there. And I think both
true freshmen showed some stuff in fall camp here as
well Xander Smith the freshman from Florida and Preston Brown
as well. Watch out for that guy, he's an athlete.
There's something there if you can figure it out out
and put it together. He's going to be a really
really good athlete here going forward. So keep on chiming
(01:03:55):
in and there on that Facebook post. Also text or
call seven zero one four seven six, sixteen to sixty.
Let's check out on some other scores here across the
country at the FCS ranks. First off, you take a
look at this one for NDSU, they get to win
thirty eight nothing over the Citadel. Other games that have
gone final already today in week number one, we talked
a little bit about the FCS over FBS win for
(01:04:19):
Tarleton State. They take down Army in double overtime on
a walk off field goal last night. The first win
for an FCS team over an FBS team here this season.
Congratulations to the Texans on that one, getting the victory
and getting themselves a win against an FBS opponent in Army.
We'll see how good Army is throughout the entire year,
but may the wins a win against an FBS team.
(01:04:40):
I make no apologies for that other ones that have
gone final earlier today when you look across the FCS,
we've got a win. I'm gonna scroll down here, I'm
gonna stall I'm just gonna admit it to you, fifty
two to seven for Navy over VMI. A little military
military crime right there, fifty two to seven. Pittsburgh took
down Duque sixty one to nine. Kent State beat Merrimack
(01:05:02):
twenty one to seventeen. Lee Hih versus Richmond, a rematch
of a playoff game from last year, was very close,
then very close again this year. Lehigh wins at twenty
one to fourteen with a fourth quarter touchdown. They were
tied fourteen to fourteen going into the fourth, So Lee
High one to oh Richmond oh and one. I believe
Brad Jones picked that one correctly in the Bison Tailgate Show,
so I'll give him some good job credit. Give brought
(01:05:23):
a shout out today for his work on the Bison
Tailgate Show back for year number nine. Also some games
going on right now at the fcs rinks. How about
some FCSFBS games. Iowa State is hosting South Dakota. Number
twenty two ranked Cyclones have the lead twenty one to seven,
nine to twenty to go in quarter number two in
(01:05:43):
the first half there bombing with a touchdown pass but
also a interception in the first half for USD. Iowa
State has hitting some big plays over the top of
that USD defense.
Speaker 5 (01:05:54):
They have Eli Green. I saw him on the screen
a couple times.
Speaker 4 (01:05:57):
He's very familiar with the South Dakota brings a tear
to my eye, even more loaded wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
But good job, you love stuff happens. Take it to
those coyotes. Yeah, Bryce Land's doing pretty good things for
us right now. Wouldn't have happened if you like, you're
gonna still here too. Air Force over Bucknell right now,
twenty one to seven, seven minutes to go. There, Northern
Illinois with a three to nothing lead over Holy Cross
playing an FBS team seven to fifty six to go
in quarter number two. There Holy Cross with the football
and they are on Northern Illinois twenty four yard line
(01:06:25):
looking like they might sign up set up for a
game tying field goal here early on or midway through
quarter number two. We're in the first quarter out in Eugene.
I feel got team is getting no love at the
FBS ranks. Is Oregon number one seed last year, but
nobody's talking about them this year. Their ranks seventh. They're
up seventeen nothing at home against Montana State. That game
in the first quarter of the Ducks not really messing
(01:06:46):
around with the FCS team.
Speaker 5 (01:06:47):
It looks like this year keep fighting Montana State, you
never know.
Speaker 3 (01:06:49):
Never know what could happen there in that one. Also,
Arkansas up seven nothing against Alabama A and m some
other scores around the FCS. The one that we wanted
to touch on, though, Top three matchup FBS number three
Ohio State, defending national champions taking on number one Texas,
first start for arch Manning as well for Texas at
all the makings of a shootout, a dual, big offensive explosion.
(01:07:15):
Fourteen to seven is the final. Instead, if you had
the under your feeling really good about that decision. Fourteen
to seven, Ohio State gets the win. Arch Manning seventeen
of thirty, barely over fifty percent there, one hundred and
seventy yards, one touchdown passing.
Speaker 4 (01:07:31):
Yeah, the Arch Manning and Brownie James comparisons are coming
out in full force right now.
Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
You knew whoever lost this game they were going to
be dragged the mud on social media, told that they're
never going to win a game again. I'm just saying
I think both of these teams are gonna been in
deep runs in the playoffs. The defenses are legit. Yeah,
i'd say starting quarterbacks for both making their first kind
of appearance. You know, the offense is going to be
a work in progress.
Speaker 4 (01:07:52):
Yeah, especially two new quarterbacks. This is their first time,
you know, being the guy being that starter for you know,
Ohio State in Texas, which obviously to the premier programs
in college football, a lot of pressure. As a defensive guy,
I love watching the game. But obviously I can see
for your standard fan, everyone loves points.
Speaker 5 (01:08:08):
Points.
Speaker 4 (01:08:08):
You know, scoring points puts the butts in the seats.
But yeah, like you said, those defenses were incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
Most important thing here. Lee Courser got the last pick, right,
he did. He picked Ohio State. He put the Buckeye
head on one more time and that one came true.
He got that last pick right, So congratulations the coach
Corso on a illustrious career. In another correct headgear pick,
he picked the Buckeyes. In his farewell episode of College
Game Day one more, he wanted to mention a number
(01:08:36):
eight Alabama on the road at Florida State in Tallahassee.
We mentioned this because our old buddy Jeff Golahankall in
the games of Florida State down there. Last I saw,
I was fourteen to seven Florida State with the lead.
I think they have the lead right now on Alabama
midway through quarter number two. I think at this point
down there at Doe Campbell Stadium.
Speaker 5 (01:08:57):
So yeah, man, they got the ball back and they
got the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:08:59):
Back up fourteen to It would be good times to
be had down there in Tallahassee. We'll watch out and
see what happens the rest of that game. It's actually

of today's game. Let's go back live to Applebee's off

Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
Shotgun for Hayes gets the step, he tries to run
a quarterback draw, has nowhere to go, loss his helmet,
and he is gobbled up drop down in the backfield.
Toby at Nady was able to deck them back at
the forty one yard line, a loss of three and
a big code green stop here on third down, one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Of three sacks for the bodies in the day and
they're thirty eight nothing win over the citadel. We aim
number one and a good let's start a fast start
for assu here in the twenty twenty five season. Welcome

locally owned and operated locations. Swinging to make sure your
vehicle is ready for the road and you can travel
stress free because your Jiffy lub Bafogo has you covered.
Jiffy Lubaffargo, you can do more in a jiffy field
goal there for Florida State. They're up. Now, what would
that be? Seventeen to seven on Alabama early, but an
(01:15:59):
early upset alert.
Speaker 4 (01:16:00):
This Castianos kid from his Boston College track, he can
play some ball.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Those jitterbug back to have to bring up and he's
just and you just watch him and you feel energygized. Yeah,
for sure, he's got some energy out there. I think
he's providing energy to a newly renovated stadium out there
for Florida State as well. To see how that game
keeps on going throughout the rest of the day. But
we play that sack highlight from Tobyaanane coming out of
break because I want to touch on the Byson defense,
(01:16:26):
and we went through the offensive numbers and some of
the stats about a segment or two ago. Want to
go through some of the stats just for the Citadel
on their offense. Here first downs in the game, eight
eight first downs the entire game. They ran the ball
forty one times for one hundred yards. This was a
team that average one hundred and eighty five yards per
game on the ground a year ago, so they were
(01:16:46):
a decent running attack. And now that option look that's
what they're going to usually get his rushing yards. But
the Bison held them to an even one hundred yards,
which is a lot. You know, Oh we give them
one hundred yards, but it was two point four carry. Yeah,
that's pretty good. We'll take that. By the way, NDSU
two hundred and fifty seven yards per game per for
the game. Five point five per carry was their average
(01:17:09):
in this one. Only two receptions for the Citadel for
twenty two yards receiving. It's only twenty two yards passing
in this game on a you know, eleven per carry
or per reception average, but only six pass attempts and
only two completions. So you went into a game and
the Citadel basically made themselves a one dimensional team, which
is kind of strange.
Speaker 4 (01:17:28):
You know, I respect the Citadel, you known't normally when
you get down by a lot of points, they start
throwing it around to try to catch up. They stayed
tried and true to their colors, very disciplined in military school.
Speaker 3 (01:17:37):
We're going to learn who we are and try and
perfect what we do.
Speaker 4 (01:17:39):
We're gonna do what we do and we're not changing.
It doesn't matter if it's one hundred to zero. But yeah,
at some.
Speaker 3 (01:17:44):
Point without the yeah, now they're main starting quarterback. They
were hoping to be the starting quarterback this year. They
get injured and kind of in the off season that
is job at a restaurant. I don't really know the
details on it. I don't know what did he just
hand burned on the stove fourk into the hand. I
don't know. You're theft with a couple of other options
at quarterback, and you're kind of mixing and matching, and
that probably plays a factor into we just don't feel
(01:18:06):
comfortable throwing the ball putting this guy back there in
harm's way as well. But only two completions in this game,
just two point six yards per play. And I want
to give NDSU special teams some credit as well, Carlton
Little John kind of taking over the coordinating role of
that third of the game. I thought it was a
really clean game special teams wise for NDSU, only thirteen
kick return yards for the Citadel only had one actual return,
(01:18:29):
a good job of kicking it through the end zone
as well, good on the few punts that they did,
and in terms of having to cover those ones, one
of them in that first quarter went into the end
zone from Bickerton probably want to try and pin them there.
You only ate got I think like sixteen yards net
on that one because you were punting up from kind
of no man's land there on that fourth down in
the first quarter. But other than that, I thought it
(01:18:50):
was a good special team as you know as well.
And this was a Citadel team that we said has
a lot of coaches with special teams experience at the
coordinator level at the NFL. You felt like special team
was an area they were gonna try and maybe flip
the field a few times. Never really happened.
Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
I will say that the Citadel's punter was a stud. Yeah,
he was a good punter. Boomed a couple of them. Yeah,
So there you go. Said that though you got a
punter and.
Speaker 3 (01:19:10):
These first team all so ok. Yeah a preseason and
was last year, and they've got some good specialists out there,
so that's something that watch on for them. But ANYU
did a good jeb kind of covering that stuff. And
even the opening kick return, Jackson Williams took that thing
out to the thirty six and kind of sounded like
if you're listening to Sam Niederman on the call, I
thought it was he's up the sideline, there he goes,
and he got tackled by the kicker. The kicker, so
(01:19:32):
Jackson Willis probably gonna get to get for that one,
I would think, Yeah, it's probably a little bit that
would be in the film room, I would assume.
Speaker 5 (01:19:38):
Unless you have a kicker like Jake Reinholtz who was
like six three two twenty five and was a miss
the electric athlete. Yeah, state record holder for goals in
North Dakota, right, Yeah, multiple support athlete for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:19:50):
But yeah, Jackson Willams got caught by the kicker on
that one on the opening kickup. But over all the
special teams was pretty darn good. And obviously those numbers,
those stats tell you that the defense really ruled the
day for NDSU. What they were able to do on
that side of the ball and completely take the citadel
out of any chance to score. They only got one
legit scoring chance they went forward on a fourth down
logan cop then with the tackle on the running back
(01:20:12):
behind the line of scrimmage and turnover run downs. They
never sniffed the end zone again after that or before that.
So defense ruled the day.
Speaker 4 (01:20:19):
Yeah, just good, good, good building block to start the season,
start the twenty twenty five season. I know they're gonna
go back and I'm sure Goo and all those coaches
they'll they'll nitpick and they'll find stuff thing and get
better at But it's a great building block to go into.
Speaker 3 (01:20:32):
The season with Go second year being the defensive coordinator too.
Talking to him this week, he just was like, what's
different this year than last year? Just I know what's happening. Yeah,
it's not even like how to call defense or it's
it's almost nothing to do with the team or the game.
It's what's my schedule, Like, I know where I'm going,
I know what interviews I have, No, I know what
(01:20:53):
I'm doing on a week's people. Absolutely, a little bit
of a just routine and a rhythm to life for
anybody in any walk up life, that stuffs important. I
think having him kind of settled into that role too,
is just going to make that defense that much better. Absolutely.
There you go our thoughts on the Bison defense here today.
If you've got any thoughts, let us know. Seven zero
one four seven six sixteen sixty. Another field goal for
(01:21:15):
Iowa State right at the end of the first half,
A long one there as well. Don't know exactly how
long that won fifty yards I think fifty Okah, I
thought there was a five up there, So a fifty
yarder for Iowa State. At the buzzer of the first half,
they lead twenty seven to seven in ames Iowa over
USD South Dakota trying to get that FBS upset, but
in a pretty deep hole going into the second half.
(01:21:36):
They will USD, that is, get the second half kickoff
to start half number two.
Speaker 5 (01:21:42):
Maybe they'll score. I don't think they will try.
Speaker 3 (01:21:45):
Wait to make it again.
Speaker 5 (01:21:45):
That's longer than fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:21:46):
I mean he's basically at midfield past it, so a
sixty yarder might have been close. We will find out.
We will do it to research. The investigative team will
do their research, and we'll let you know when we
come back on the other side. A few more segments
to go here on Bison Hotline, and you gets a
season opening win thirty eight nothing over the Citadel.

Let's get back to the breakdown of today's game for
the Bison. This is Bison.
Speaker 2 (01:26:10):
Hotline thirty one yard field goal leptask Caleb Bowers to snap,
Aaron Bickerton to hold, and here's a snap in spot.
Oaick's kick is on the way and Ozicks kick is good,
so the Bison are on the board. Here in twenty
and twenty five, Eliosick connects on a thirty one yard
field goal and NDSU takes the.
Speaker 3 (01:26:30):
Lead here at the Citadel three to nothing. First points
of twenty twenty five go to Eli Oazick, new kicker,
moving on, new guy there, new punter as well. Aaron Bickerton,
the guy from stoke On, Trent, England to England, which
that was said by Sam Niederman. Philhanson's at stoke On
(01:26:52):
Is that three words? You know? And I had a
fun little back and forth on that one. Aaron Bickerton
definitely a fun character. I can tell they work well together.
When I've been talking with the Specialists this year, they
always kind of they're in the background of interviews, kind
of making fun.
Speaker 5 (01:27:04):
Of each other.
Speaker 4 (01:27:05):
Yeah, the Specialists, Sorrery, they're an interesting group. I'll just
put it at that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:09):
Caleb Bowers back there as a lot of snapper as well,
Bowser who want to go that way. Bowers out there,
But Elioasick going to be relied upon this year as
the man the kicker. Griffin Crowson no longer there. I
set records at NDSU Eli probably a bigger leg. We'll
see that at some point this year. Potentially has made
a fifty four yarder. Maybe he'll make the longest ever
(01:27:29):
field goal in NDISU history, which needs to go a
couple more yards to have that one by himself at
fifty six. The all time record by Ken Johnson at
fifty five yards, but he attempted at fifty six and
missed it I think against etsu Yep last year. But
Elioaick did get the first points of the season. What
are you looking forward to from the new specialist? And
mainly Eli Ozick there, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:27:49):
Kind of I think a page out of Phil Hanson's
book here, just we don't want to notice you obviously
like the big kick, the game winning kicks, like yes,
but the best special teams, the best snappers, the best kicker.
It just you gotta be just so boringly consistent that
you just go out there, do your job, trop back
off the field and it's like to watch it exactly. Yeah, Yeah,
that's the best special Your best specialists are the ones
(01:28:11):
you're just they're just so consistent and you just kind
it's kind of mundane, boring.
Speaker 5 (01:28:14):
They just do their job and they do it really well.
Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
Well, he did his job really well, and so did
whoever the kicker is for Iowa's tickets. We have done
our investigative work, the crack team of investigators here on
bys and Hotline look back, and that Iowa state field
goal was a sixty three yard field goal. Sixty three
yards kickers are just getting ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (01:28:32):
Now, yea, And that is the longest in Iowa state
history and the history at Jack Trice Stadium, and ames.
Speaker 3 (01:28:38):
I hope so as well. For Yeah, that's a big
that's a elioasc when when talking to him, I said,
I think I'd like to attempt to sixty in the far.
I think he's got a good condition, he's got.
Speaker 4 (01:28:49):
The leg, he has the power, just a matter of
you know, the snap, the spot, the guys up front
holding the block for a little bit long because that
kick is going to come out of a larger directorory. Yep,
but uh I could see it. Especially he's only a
couple of years. Here is a sophomore leaf. Yeah, he's
right sure that time.
Speaker 3 (01:29:05):
Yeah, he's got some time. He got a couple of
years to potentially hit one of those through NDSU gets
the win today thirty eight nothing over the Citadel, your comments,
your questions against seven zero one four seven six, sixteen sixty,
a few more of them on our Facebook page. One
from Roberts has started out kind of shaky, but it
might have been the weather really strong rebound after that.
(01:29:27):
I would agree that the weather wasn't ideal. Look at
the weather right now in this Alabama Florida State game.
It is coming down pretty darn good right now. It's
gonna be a wet one out there in Tallahassee for
their season opener against Alabama. Florida State has the lead
seventeen to seven, one twenty six to play in the
first half.
Speaker 5 (01:29:43):
I hope Jeff has a better booth out there than Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:29:46):
He definitely does. I hope he does, and he definitely
does because he's at home for that game. But the boot,
the I think they called it the ledge. We're at
the on the ledge. They were living life on the
edge of Jackson hay Goods State out there in the Citadel.
But they did get the win. And I'm proud to
say Jake Beck told our great engineer had torps on
(01:30:06):
the gear because we were not in a booth. We were,
like we said on the edge. I have some torps
on their make sure stuff doesn't get wet because you're
dealing with electronics and electricity. Next thing, you know myself
and you are calling the game from our studio. If
that were to happen, I would have been interesting. That
would have been very interesting at that point. I do
agree with you Jim as well, saying, good thing we
play in a dome looked good. It will be interesting
to see how it goes when conference play starts. A
(01:30:27):
couple of weeks to get ready for conference play. What
would you like to see between now and the end
of September when we'll host USD for homecoming.
Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
Honestly, the biggest thing I talked about this probably a
few segments ago, is just the chemistry between our young
old line. Just they just need to keep building every
day in practice, every game reup they're gonna get. They have,
you know, three more three more non conference games before
we you know.
Speaker 3 (01:30:49):
Two more before we have conference, but three more total.
Speaker 4 (01:30:51):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, so two more games in the
bye we just just the chemistry of the old line
and then just same thing, more game reps for Cole
Payton drop back passing, having full control of the offense
and then obviously his relationship too with Dan Larson being
a first time NDSU play caller, just kind of that
(01:31:12):
once again chemistry between the two of them, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:31:14):
Pairing what he likes to do and what you like
to call and how that kind of relationship works out
in those key moments. So again, thanks for all the
comments there on our Bison sixteen sixty Facebook page. One
more break for us and we'll come back here and
wrap things up. Our final thoughts and NDUSUS thirty eight
nothing win over the citadel next here on Bison Hotline.

Final segments of buys and hotlines. Not much time to
call into that number if you want you right now,
your stots. We want your thoughts after each and every
game this season, NDSU gonna have a lot of them.
What do you make of twelve games going forward each
and every year? Now twelve game schedules in the regular season.
Speaker 5 (01:35:57):
Than it's good? I mean, we can't playing about more
football right right? More football is a good thing.
Speaker 3 (01:36:02):
Yeah, I was as a player, have an extra game,
just the wear and tear on the body. What do
you like of it? There?
Speaker 5 (01:36:08):
I think in twenty nineteen we played sixteen.
Speaker 4 (01:36:12):
Honestly, you don't really think about it. I mean, just
another day, another day, next game on the schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:36:18):
Camps, which maybe a week earlier, end of July.
Speaker 4 (01:36:20):
Exactly, Yeah, that would be I guess I do remember
starting like it's you have to come back from you're
just you start football a little bit sentoner.
Speaker 5 (01:36:27):
We're already everyone's up here for summer anyways.
Speaker 4 (01:36:30):
It's not like you're well, I was always home, but
for the guys that are from out of town, you're
always here. So it doesn't really make that big of
a difference from a players standpoint. Just another game, just
one more week, week on the schedule. Just everything comes
to ground hogs. They're around here.
Speaker 3 (01:36:44):
And the next week for NDSU is going to be
another fun one. It's in Nashville, right down Broadway at
the Tennessee Titans Stadium, Nissan Stadium there against Tennessee States,
a return of the home and home from last year.
We had them up here last year and now go
down to their place playoff team from a year go,
but new coach Eddie George's moved on to Bowling Green.
Shout out to them. I believe they got a win
(01:37:05):
in their first game, had a kickoff return as well.
Speaker 4 (01:37:08):
Their vollyball team beat their volleyball team or volleyball we
beat their volleyball team out ye go Jen Lopez three.
Speaker 3 (01:37:13):
Sweep of the Bowling Green State University Falcons. I found
that out yesterday from Brad Jones. It's not Bowling Green,
it's Bulling Green State University. Not Bowling Green State either,
Boiling Green State University. They want to make sure you
get the university out there. But no matter what you
call them, they got swept by Gen Lopez and Bison
volleyball yesterday inside of the BBF thirty eight. Not the
(01:37:34):
NBSUO gets the win tomorrow or not tomorrow. But next
week's game against Tennessee State is a one thirty kickoff.
I know a lot of fans are going to that one.
Should be a packed, very Bison heavy crowd. I would think,
once again, Nashville is a great place to go. Have
been there a few times, and I know we're hoping
to be there again at the end of the season,
but one thirty for the kickoff next week, which means
we'll get going right at about seven thirty for kick
(01:37:59):
or for a Bison Report show with Ross Ouglam to
start off our coverage on Bison sixteen sixty one on
seven point nine The Fox. You'll get going with Bison
Game Day next week for that one, and that will
be right at about ten thirty is when we'll start
on one on seven point nine The Fox with our
pregame coverage for week number two, thirty eight nothing over
the Citadel Final thoughts Jay Cavos's.
Speaker 4 (01:38:20):
Great started the season. Obviously, you worry a little bit
about championship hangover. I think came out played well. A
team we should be, a team we should handle to
handle them, thirty eight to zero, move on to next week.
Speaker 3 (01:38:31):
Some room to grow, but a lot of pauses to
take away from this first game. Thirty eight nothing obviously
a very good score. We'll take that one going on
into week number two before we say goodbye. How about
some thoughts on a couple of games tonight Chris climbing
Kansas State against und That one kicks off at six
o'clock tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:38:48):
I know you know Case State tough Loskins Iowa State
last week. I think they're going to be trying to
get back and there's no one better I could think
for Case State and a former Bison coach Chris Climban
to get back against than that team from up north.
Speaker 3 (01:39:02):
I would think they're going to be uh juiced up,
to say the least, to try and get themselves on
the winning side of the ledger and get to one
and one. And then six o'clock tonight down in Brookings,
SDSU against Sack State, the battle of two very new
rosters and new coaching staffs.
Speaker 4 (01:39:16):
Yeah, it'll be interesting obviously. You know, Dan Jackson's his
debut with South Goes State. Everyone knows what Sacks State
and they're seventy one new players. Yeah, and you know
they're have told everyone they're going to the FBS. They
have all this money and stuff. So we'll see. I'll
definitely keep a close eye on that one. I would,
just as history goes, think STSU wins that game, but
(01:39:37):
who knows.
Speaker 3 (01:39:38):
Yeah, with a lot of new stuff there, who knows
new players? But you tend to think at home, the
Missouri valid team typically does beat the big skyes. That's
what I would I'd be on that side of that
matchup as well. But the next week SDSU at Montana
State going to be a heck of a football next week.
But we'll enjoy Week number one as long as we can.
It will keep on going throughout the night. Big things.
(01:39:59):
Do you so well done Week number one? Be fun
to do this all years.
Speaker 5 (01:40:02):
Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (01:40:02):
Yeah, there we go one and oh four NDSU. Big
thanks to everyone that was a part of our game
day coverage on Bison sixteen sixty and one oh seven
point nine. The Fox from Ross Uglum Jay Bartley, Brad Jones,
Ian Longton producing all of our stuff back in the
studio today pulling triple overtime duties in the studio and
our Bison Sports Studios Roman Porterfield helping with the engineer
(01:40:24):
and of course our great crew at the game in Charleston,
the Voice of the Bison, Sam Niederman and Phil Hanson,
the Hall of Famer and Noah Gendel first working his
way towards Hall of Fame status on the sidelines, and
Jake Beck told the great Engineer dealing with the ledge
and the crowd mics and the ref mics that we
weren't given and the weather and keeping everything dry. He
did a great job with all of that of our
Jake Cava as well and the rest of our crew
(01:40:46):
