let's go live to Bison Hotline. Here's your host, Andy Rickoff.
Speaker 5 (01:18):
I formation with Peyton under center, the give to Penu
off left side inside the five, bounces off a tackler,
States honest paint, stretches for the goal line.
Speaker 6 (01:26):
Pas got it.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Touchdown.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
Bison Barrika Penu bouncing off of tacklers and stretching across
the goal line are in Nashville.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
A ten yard.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
Rushing touchdown and the Bison are on the board first
six to nothing.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Good guys, the Bison were on the board first and
often in this one, fifty nine to three the final.
NDSU takes down Tennessee State in a game that didn't
feel that close. Andy Rickoff out this week, Brad Jones in.
Please be joined by Luke Wurtz as we get set
to break down what was about as thorough a game
(02:02):
as you are going to see with NDSU cruising to
a fifty six point victory. Luke, we both picked blowouts
in the in the game to start things off when
we had game day. This was even more than what
we were expecting. It was thorough all the way through.
Speaker 7 (02:19):
Yeah, it was. It was a beat down through and through.
My heart dropped a little bit when I saw that
kick go through the upright. So I was hoping for
the shutout, but wasn't. Wasn't in the cards this week.
But it's still a great Bison win. Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
So we hear that often that the ones will get
on the twos and threes. If that if that shutout
goes down late in the game, is that a real thing?
Does that actually happen?
Speaker 7 (02:39):
You just want to see it. Keep a shutout. You
put in all that work and then it goes away
at the end. It's it's always a rough thing to happen.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
So it's it's always tough when you see a game
like this. It was pretty clear from the outset that
Tennessee State was very overmatched and NDSU did everything that
they that they wanted to. Were you more impressed by
the offense or the defense?
Speaker 7 (03:00):
I think defensively another great game. I mean, it was
just there was a lot of people running around making
good hits, good tackling. Yeah, it's a great start for
the season for that group.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Of course, that's former Bison linebacker Luke Worri Bias whatsoever.
But that's about as impressive a defensive performance as you
are going to see. Uh as NDSU in the first
half on the defensive side of the ball, seven drives
for Tennessee State. Every one of them ended in three plays,
four punts, a fumble, an interception, and the end of
(03:32):
the first half nothing more than three plays, zero first downs.
Even by NDSU's standards, that is impressive.
Speaker 7 (03:40):
That's domination. I mean, get off the field. That's that's
what you preach as a defense, and those guys have
spent a lot of time sitting on the bench, which
is always a good thing.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Absolutely, An NDSU's offense was was right along there with it.
Parerika Penu. That what you heard in the open the
first of his three touchdowns. Uh, he just continued to
bounce off people and look like a different guy than
what we saw a year ago.
Speaker 7 (04:02):
Yeah, he's getting those carries by the end zone too.
He's getting fed the rock there and making good and
good use of it. For sure.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Absolutely, we want to hear your thoughts on the game
as well. Give us a call seven oh one four
seven six sixteen sixty, especially if you're out in Nashville,
if you made the trip down we'd love to hear
from you on the experience. You know, get a little
bit of that insight just in case NDSU makes a
trip back there in January. We want to make sure
we know where we need to go. We are live

Got a lot to get to again. We want to
hear your thoughts as well. Give us a call. Seven
oh one, four to seven six sixteen sixty NDSU with
(05:17):
a fifty nine to three win over at Tennessee State.
Couple of road games. You start out and NDSU doesn't
do that often where the first two games are out
on the road, and even when you are heavy favorites
going in, it's important. And we heard coach Polisek during
during halftime, right before halftime talk about how we play
sixty We don't play we don't play half, we don't
(05:38):
get up and let it go, we play sixty its.
Certainly it's got to be challenging, I would say, at
times to keep that same energy level up for sixty
minutes when you're in the environment, which I think the
announced attendance it was just over what was it just
over eight thousand? Was that what they said? In a
sixty thousand seat stadium? It's uh, that's an It was empty.
(06:01):
It looked empty on TV, and certainly a lot more
green and yellow than blue. Their energy did not seem
to be a problem at any point for.
Speaker 7 (06:08):
NDSU, No, not at all. And there's a lot that
goes into roadue games. Logistically, travel wise, you're not sleeping
in your own bed, so there's a lot that goes
into it. As a player, and to see those guys
prevail like that and to have their own energy on
the sidelines for sixty minutes was really fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
We're gonna do a deep dive in of course, we'll
get a look at what you saw on the defensive side.
Talk through that NDSU offense, which was a well balanced
attack all the way through. And of course make sure
if you get a chance come out here at Applebe's
sign up to win some Byson tickets. We've got two
tickets to give away to the USD game. That should
be a fun game coming up here in three weeks.
(06:47):
So swing by the table, got some Bison sixteen to
sixty swag and sign up to win some some Bison
tickets here as as well. We're going to take our
first break here. We've got lots more to get to.
We'll take a look at others, the wars that are
happening around the country. We'll name our player of the game,
our highlight of the game. All that coming up, and
of course your thoughts as well. Give us a call
(07:09):
and we'll take your calls here live on the air.
A lot more coming up. This is Bison Hotline.

Buys it got it? Byson recover the bub ball Rhymes
coughed it up at Taylor at eighty. The safety he's
got his first career bubble recovery buys it takeaway with
twelve seconds to go in.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
The first quarter. Welcome back into Byson hotline, the Bison offense,
Byson defense, Everything got going for the Bison today. Fifty
nine to three is the final NDSU taking out Tennessee State.
You look across the look across the stats for the
Bison today, really well balanced, which is what you're gonna
(12:01):
expect when you get as many guys in as NDSU had,
but also efficient. Cole Payton thirteen of sixteen. He just
played the first two quarters one hundred and sixty six
yards and a score. Nine different buys and players had
a had at least one reception, Two different Buyson players
had receiving touchdowns, three different players had at least one
rushing touchdown. It was it was across the board, which
(12:22):
you want to get some of those guys reps early
because you never know when you're gonna need players down
the road.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Yeah, it's great to see that the rock who was
getting spread around and everyone has seen some love today.
In games like this, it's really important in the beginning
of the season to get those guys reps and make
sure that they're continuing to see success in the field.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
What do you when you were early in your career
and one of those players coming in and getting those
reps late in some of these type of games, what
were you What was your goal? What were you focused on?
What were you trying to either show your teammates, your coaches,
anybody when you were in those situations.
Speaker 7 (12:58):
Yeah, when you're a young guy and you're trying to
make any for yourself, it always starts on special teams
at NDSU. So when you're making plays on special teams,
the coaches see that and they want to put you
in at the end of the game and make sure
that they can trust you in that situation. But when
you're playing defense at the end of the game, especially
for me, it was do my job, do my job,
earn that trust of my coach so I can play
in big time games.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Have you ever seen I mean, it's hard to measure
up to that. Have you ever seen anything like the
level of dominance that we saw from the defense in
the first.
Speaker 7 (13:27):
Quarter, first half? Rather, that was unreal. Three and outs,
three and outs, three and outs, get off the field,
making good tackles. I mean it was a great sight
to see.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
Yeah, it was, I mean wild when you look at
the stat sheet that somehow this game was as close
as fifty six points twenty four first downs compared to
four for NDSU. With Tennessee State that number in the
first half was seventeen to zero first first just for
first downs. You know, you look at the rushing yards,
(13:57):
thirty nine carries one hundred and ninety one yards for
the Bison, twenty eight carries for seventy yards for the Tigers.
If you go up and down the list here for
the Bison two hundred and forty two yards total through
the air compared to sixty one for Tennessee State. And
we talked about we spent a lot of time during
the pregame during Bison game day talking about the talking
(14:19):
about the coaches and talking for Tennessee State and the
NFL pedigree and everything that they were bringing. I don't
know that we knew there was a talent differential coming in.
I don't know that we knew it was quite this big.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
Yeah, I don't think the coaching had much to do
with the outcome of this game. I don't think there is.
You could have had Bill Belichick on the opposing sideline,
I don't think that much would have changed.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
Well, based on what he did last week, I certainly
don't think that that much would have would have changed
in that one. But the Bison get two big wins
out on the road before coming back home here to
open up the Fargo Dome and celebrate another national championship
with the what giving away three thousand replica title rings
(15:05):
next week for the Yeah, first three thousand fans coming
in is is pretty cool. Now, I know that as
soon as as soon as workouts start for the following season,
no championship stuff does. So who does the head coach?
Speaker 7 (15:18):
Does?
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Coach Kramer? Who hates more that we're that we we're
gonna celebrate last year's team at the start of a
game this year?
Speaker 7 (15:24):
I think it's Coach Ramer. He's been here the longest,
he has the most rings, so that's fair. But he's
the first guy that'll say and that last year did
not matter. This year is all that all that we're
worrying about. So it's definitely Coach Kramer here. Yeah, he
gets mad in that in those areas there you go you.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Give us a call seven oh one four seven six,
sixteen sixty, or you can text in seven oh one
four seven six sixteen sixty. We got a text from
Tony in North Carolina. His question, I'm gonna have to
do a little research on this. What is the biggest
blowout in Bison football history. We're gonna get on that. Well,
we'll see if we can do some some dig and
Tony stick with us and we'll see if we can
(16:01):
we can track that down. It's certainly not this one
which is which is certainly saying something about the history
that that NDSU has had. But we'll see if we can.
We'll dig through the website see if we can track
that one down. But either way, fifty six points pretty
thorough for the for the Bison all the way all
the way through today. So and all of our game

Let's get back to the breakdown of today's game for
the Bison. This is Bison.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
Hotline Gold to go at the five eye formation with
DJ Scott in the tailback and off to Scott behind
Lee blocking bounces outside a lane all the way into
the head zone. Touchdown, Bison, DJ Scott on touch marking
the right side five yard rushing touchdown, and the Bison
(21:30):
beat goes on. Here in Nashville, they laid at thirty
to nothing with ted O four remaining of the opening half.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
And the beating went on and on and on before
we finally landed at a final score of fifty nine
to three. Brad Jones Luke works with you here up
at Applebee's across from the Fargo Dome in North Fargo,
where you can catch us after every NDSU game. Hole

(22:01):
boys in sixteen sixty swag or as we're giving away
today two tickets to the NDSU USD football game, which
should be a that's those are gonna be fun tickets
and that's gonna be a fun game coming up here
three weeks from today. All right, we uh we tony.
We did our due diligence in the during the break here,
we used AI. I think AI gave us three different answers,
(22:23):
but we were fortunate to have a have our research
team here and we finally came up with the biggest
margin of victory for NDSU. We're going back to nineteen
twelve against Wapaton. One hundred and twenty three to zero
was the was the finals. So that's that's what we
what we landed on. There was a one hundred and
five to nothing win in nineteen o three over Flandro.
(22:47):
There was a ninety two to ten win over MSUM
in nineteen oh four, So we went through some some
pretty pretty sizable margins of victory back in the back
in the day. But that's that's what we got.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
So did the games last like two hundred and forty minutes?
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
I don't maybe plan on a fifty yard field. You know,
who knows what happens happened at that point, But this
one was on the full hundred and was just about
as throw. I think NDSU could have scored about as
much as they wanted to today. Everything was working, Cole
Payton was outstanding. It's these games are always tough, and
we talked a little bit about this, even with NDSU
(23:25):
against the Citadel last week, where the Citadel was overmatched.
That game ended up being a thirty eight to nothing
final final score was probably aided by the weather and
the early game downpour that didn't allow NDSU or really
either team to get anything going on the offensive side.
Early on, the weather was clear down in Nashville, and
(23:45):
NDSU showed the type of firepower that they can have,
I think most importantly out of all out of the
game though, seemed like everybody came away healthy, which is
about all you can ask for.
Speaker 7 (23:56):
Yeah, that's huge, and in a game like this, I mean,
it just helps you get into the groove of the
season playing week to week and it's tough on your body.
Guys that maybe were banged up the past two weeks
can get better. Yeah, games like this are really just
a good check of the pulse and the season ahead
and everything to come right.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
We had talked during pregame a couple of guys and
injuries from last week. Rajan Nelson who played and scored
a touchdown today, Finn Diggins who was a little bit
banged up he played today. The big loss, of course,
is senior wide receiver senior captain Chris Harris. Looks like
he's going to be out for the best we can
tell is a while, and that's the most optimistic optimistic
(24:37):
way I guess we can put it at this point.
But an injury that happened in practice, which you hate
injuries at any time, but when you get something like
that in practice.
Speaker 7 (24:45):
That's tough. That's tough. Yeah, So that's awful.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
You had to deal with You had to deal with
an injury during the playoffs last year. What was that
like going through the injury in that time for you?
Speaker 7 (25:00):
Awful? I mean, there's no other way to put it.
You're watching your your best friends play big time games
and you want to be out there with them. And
there was a couple of guys in my senior class
that had some injuries last year. Which were just devastating
for us. But in that in those moments, you just
got to stick together and do what you can for
the team. Even though it might not have ended the
(25:21):
way that that I wanted to personally on the field,
it ended the way that we all wanted to as
a team. So there you go.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
Yeah, all right, we are going to you give us
a call here join the program on Bison Hotline seven
oh one four seven six sixteen sixty. We will head
to the All Star Construction Hotline where we are joined
by John and West Fargo. John, I'm told you have
a serious question for us.
Speaker 7 (25:45):
Thanks for joining us, Yes, I do.
Speaker 25 (25:47):
First of all, let me say it was quite a game.
I mean, it's perfect in every way. The guys just
totally dominate, and they did it last week too. Here's
my serious question. When I get we're we're we're season
ticket holders. When I see the schedule, I can right
away say the Bison are gonna are gonna win most,
(26:08):
if not all the games. It's only gonna be a
couple of competitive ones. You're almost are waiting to the
playoffs to say the latter part of the playoffs are
going to be they get better games so my question
is in Luke, you were in the uniform, So I
really want I don't want a serious thought on this.
It really appears to the fan like we're just over
(26:28):
matts for this league. You can't get any FBS games.
They don't want to play the Bison. Everybody other, every
other FPS program seems to be able to get FBS games.
What's it gonna take to really get serious and get
to the next level because it just looks like the
Bison are just so much better than everybody else. And
(26:50):
I'll hang up listening to guys.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
All right, John, thanks so much for the for the call.
It's it's certainly a fair point one that a lot
of people have been making as nd SU has entered
the current era of where f C S is. It's
it's tough, and I'll obviously we'll get we'll get your
thoughts on get your thoughts on it. Uh, But I
(27:15):
honestly this will we'll go through the home slate this year.
I think the home slate is a little bit. It
should have some fun games this year, but it is
a different landscape and that's just kind of the way
it is. What's it going to take to get to
that next level. I don't know, can you make a call.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
I don't know if you've got that, it be made.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
So what what are your what are your thoughts when
you when you look at that, what's you've you've played it,
you've lived at the last couple of years as the
f c S level has has changed. What's what's your
message with his comment? Yeah, I mean it's tough. I
mean in the Missouri Valley at nd s U for
the home games, you look for the Dakota schools if
they're they're coming to the Fargo down that year, and
(27:58):
then there's teams like Southern Illinois might have a good
year here and there. Before it was Missouri State might
be okay every once in a while. But now the
landscape is tough. I mean it's when you look at
the FCS in general, it's the Dakota schools and the
Montana schools. I mean, that's that's what it is. That's
where the competition is.
Speaker 7 (28:15):
So I mean, as a player, not having the fans
at the home games and having them leave at halftime
was always It's not fun. I mean, you want everyone
to stay as long as they can. But we also
understand that if we're beating the team handily. It's kind
of hard to watch at times.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Well, and here's the thing, and it's it's any given
Saturday is still a Montre out there. We can and
any NDSU fan can name a few games that we
thought going in we're going to be laughers and did
not end up that way. And so you know, you
see upsets, you see you know, you see a team
Army gets beat by Tarlton States last week, Austin p
(28:54):
was hanging with Georgia through the through the first half.
Any anything can happen, But I don't think that the
alternative is better. Do you want NDSU to not be
as good and then have more competitive games. I want
to continue to see NDSU keep that standard of excellence
that that we have had, and there's so much change,
(29:16):
sometimes changes fast, and sometimes there's parts of that change that.
Speaker 7 (29:20):
Lag a little bit behind.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
I'm confident that NDSU, when the when the dust settles
with where FBS ends things, is going to find a
spot that will allow them to have competitive games and
hopefully bring back bring back some of the excitement and
in the meantime, if that means we are going to
win more national championships, and we're gonna have more experiences
like going to Nashville, like going to Vegas in a
(29:45):
few years. There are a couple of you know, Oregon
is on the schedule for for FBS games, Colorado obviously
last year. If the if the side effect is, hey,
we might have to wait a few years, but we're
going to get to see greatness. There are worse things
than that.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
Yeah, I mean, you take what you can get. And
my message to the fans would be the game of
football is so different than any other sport where the
offset is, season is long, and you're preparing for only
eleven guaranteed games, Like that's all you're guaranteed in this sport,
So come out, show out support the Bison because nothing's
(30:21):
given in this sport. I mean, every every win takes
a lot of energy and effort throughout the week. So
that that would be my message to the fans. Come
out and show.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
Out, love that and hey, I there's no place I'd
rather be win by one hundred, have a tight game,
no place I'd rather be than the Fargo Dome on
a Saturday. All right, let's head back to the All
Star Construction Hotline. Cody and Fargo wants to talk about
the wide receivers. Cody, you're on Buyson hotline.
Speaker 26 (30:45):
Hey, how's it going, guys.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Good game, We're doing great.
Speaker 5 (30:49):
Good.
Speaker 26 (30:50):
I like the you know, throwing the ball around the
different receivers, you know, hittting the younger receivers experience. But
is it a couge for concern that Lance only has
seven catches for eighty yards against quote unquote lesser competition,
you know when it gets to you know, with USD
coming up here in a couple of weeks and then
the Missouri Valley or we should we not be worried
(31:11):
about that yet with the emergence of the younger receivers
and and Rajah coming back and stuff.
Speaker 18 (31:18):
I'll hang up and listen.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Thank you all right, Cody, Yeah, thank you so much
for for the call. It's it's the and I think
that's fair. You look at numbers versus watching the games,
and I think that's maybe the difference there. Those numbers
for Bryce Lance are coming in half, are coming in
a half of football in each of the two games
probably you know, played into the third quarter a little
bit last week. Uh that's I'm I'm not really concerned
(31:44):
about about that. Bryce is going to get his opportunities.
But when you have two things going for you, number one,
you're not having to play the full game, and number two,
you're winning by a lot and running the ball a lot,
the numbers aren't necessarily going to follow up with the
with the talent and certainly what we're gonna see from
uh from Bryce when the games get a little bit tighter.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
Yeah, Bryce is gonna make big time plays and big
time games like you saw all throughout last year. But
then to that point, when opposing coaches are preparing for UNDSU,
they're looking at a guy like Bryce Lance and saying,
how can we stop that guy? So, I mean, there's
gonna if he doesn't have maybe the stats that he
did last year, but he takes up two defenders at
times and lets other people have big time plays. He's
(32:26):
making a big difference in a different way. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
And and the other thing I would I would say too,
is if Bryce had been playing in the third and
fourth quarter today, we'd have had a lot of questions.
I could play a little bit in the third. I
don't think he saw the field at all in the fourth,
but if he was, if he was on the field.
We'd been like, hold up here, why is he out
on the on the field. So the numbers I think
(32:49):
certainly could have could have been there, But like you've said,
we talked about with the injuries, it's a long season.
Speaker 7 (32:55):
Let's make sure he's he's ready to go.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
So appreciate the call, but I've got I got a
feeling there's some some big numbers in Bryce Lance's future.
All right, we're going to take our next break here again.
Feel free to give us a call or send a
text seven oh one four seven six sixteen sixty to
be a part of the program. We'll take that break
and come back with more here on Bison Hotline.

Bison Here is the cool performer of the game.
Speaker 5 (37:30):
McNair takes a snap Bison rush beries under pressure Alutin

home on a pick six and he returned it all
(37:50):
the way up the weft sideline. Code Green continues this
flawless first half in Nashville Wooland with a pick six
thirty seven. Nothing buys it.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
Oh, we're gonna have Luke Wurtz come in for his
UH for his first broadcast on Bison sixteen sixty. We're
gonna go defense for our player of the game. You
called it during Bison game day. You wanted to see
something from Donovan Woollen taking it to the house. It's
about all you can ask for in that respect.
Speaker 7 (38:19):
What a prediction. I don't want, I don't want to
to my own horn do Absolutely did it was.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
It was a great play, a great read coming up
from underneath on the on the sideline right where he
needed to be. Well from from a linebacker's point of view.
And it's different obviously on the TV broadcast versus being
able to see the whole field. What did you see
from Wollen on that play?
Speaker 7 (38:43):
Yeah, that's scrambled drill right there. So the quarterback gets
out of the pocket, Donovan's staying in coverage. He's not
drifting with the quarterback. He's staying right there and made
him made a play on the ball, a one headed
snag and took it to the end zone. Because he's
a great athlete.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
Is that one of the in those scrambled drills is
that one of the hardest things to do as a
whether it's linebacker or secondary is wanting to have that
tendency to drift and stay home. That feels like that
goes against everything that your body is.
Speaker 7 (39:11):
Telling you to do. Yeah. Absolutely, and it takes a
lot of practice. I mean there's countless reps in camp
where we're watching film on Hey, this wasn't a good
scramble drill. Rep. You gotta not move with the quarterback
because everything's telling you too, right, But yeah, that was
just well executed by Donovan.
Speaker 4 (39:27):
It was well executed by don and Dona by one
and that makes him our dri I Player of the Game.
Dakota Refrigeration helps athletes succeed behind the scenes, from the
training room to the dining room, from milk to medicine,
from ice to ice cream. Dri has been serving Minnesota
Montana and the Dakotas for over forty years online at
(39:49):
dak reff dot com. We look at the let's go
back to that defensive side again. It's a testament to
the volume of players that that got a chance to
play for NDSU today. Nobody had more than four tackles,
which is, you know what happens when the opposing team
runs as few plays as they as they did during
(40:12):
the during the course of the game. But again, everybody
getting a little bit of a little bit in there.
You look at the tackles for losses. What five, six, seven,
eight total tackles for loss by the by the Bison front,
and those tackles for losses, you want to look at
where those where that total yardage really became a problem
for for Tennessee State. I'm doing my quick math here,
(40:36):
thirty four yards lost on those on those tackles for losses,
and that doesn't take into account the recovered fumble, the interception.
That's just taking care of business up front. It was
a It was certainly a combination of a couple of
different couple of different things. There was one play where
I believe it was Keenan Wilson was just left completely
(40:58):
unblocked and managed to tackle both the quarterback and the
running back during the exchange. I don't know that I've
ever seen one person get the tackle for a loss
by tackling two players at once before.
Speaker 7 (41:09):
No, that was incredible. I was watching that play. I
was like, well, whoever has the ball is on the ground, that's.
Speaker 4 (41:16):
Right, and it was.
Speaker 7 (41:20):
I don't know. You hate to kick a team when
they're down.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
But we go in talking about the attention to detail
and everything that goes in with the experience and the
NFL experience that this coaching staff has. Mistakes like that
should not happen where you're the detackle over the ball
is going in free to and getting to the exchange
almost before it's made. And the number of times that
(41:43):
you saw a number other than eleven players on the field.
For Tennessee State, they had to call a time out
because they only had ten guys on the field before
their first offensive play. It's it went against the narrative
I think that we were looking at pregame.
Speaker 7 (41:59):
Yeah, I mean, it's undisciplined, it's losing football. And you
look at the dichotomy of that where NDSU even look
at guys in interviews post game, it's always my coaches
did great, my teammates are great. Like there's no me,
me me, it's all the team, the team, the team,
and that's the difference in these games.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
Yeah, I mean, penalties were something that NDSU certainly battled
a little bit, some of those pre snap penalties, A
handful of false starts that they that the Bison had
last week. I'm looking at I believe NDSU had one
penalty if I'm remembering correctly today, one penalty for ten.
Speaker 7 (42:35):
Yards clean football.
Speaker 4 (42:38):
I mean, you don't even give the opposing team an
opportunity to give everything moment. We are giving you nothing
for free. You are outmatched, you are the talent level
is not there. But on top of that, we're going
to be spotless yep. And that puts an opposing team
at a really, really difficult spot.
Speaker 7 (42:56):
And put them in a bind. And like I said pregame,
the key to the game was limit the explosives. I
don't think there was there might have been one.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
Yeah, let's let's sa any if there was anything.
Speaker 7 (43:07):
There was not what the longest play was.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
Longest play was one thirty one yard run that came
I think in the fourth quarter. That may have been Oh,
my memory is gonna get stretched here, might have been
that one that set.
Speaker 7 (43:19):
Up field goal. There's the field goals that they ultimately got.
But that was it.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
One thirty one yard run that was the only play
over sixteen yards. Wow, that Tennessee State had. They that
was the longest reception of the day. Their their leading
receiver was one catch sixteen yards.
Speaker 7 (43:35):
Co Greens off to a great start.
Speaker 4 (43:36):
It's it's hard to get much better than much better
than that. We'll we'll take a look going forward here
later on in the show. At at Simo, NDSU's opponent
in the home opener next weekend. Simo's been up and
down a little bit over the over the years, but
you see them as a as a playoff team popping
up in there. So is NDSU still going to have
(43:58):
an advantagey? Absolutely? Is it going to be quite like this?
I don't think so. But then you're also coming home
and and welcoming, welcoming everybody into the dome for the
first time of the year too, right.
Speaker 7 (44:11):
Yeah, it's gonna be a rowdy group of fans there,
the white out uniforms. Yeah, that's gonna be fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
Okay, are you Are you pro pro white outs?
Speaker 7 (44:18):
There's been so much discourse. Yes, No, Do I like it? Do?
I don't? Do you? I like it? Yeah? Right. I
think it looks good and I think it's gonna look
really good on field. I think in videos it's hard
to tell what an actual uniform will actually look like
in real life. But I think it's gonna look great,
and I think it's fun. I think it's I mean,
as a player, I think would be awesome to change
it up, like when we did those throwback uniforms. It
(44:39):
was really cool.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
Yeah, And I think that's that's a part of it too,
is you know, for the I'm getting into the old
guy crowd a whole lot sooner than what I would
what I would like here, but it's not for me,
like like they're not as in And I'm not saying
that I don't like them. I'm saying they're not doing
this for me. And if if people like it, if
the kids like it, if the players like it, awesome,
mix it up as much as you want and give
(45:02):
give a little bit of a different look and a
change of pace, and I think that's all that's all
that we need.
Speaker 7 (45:07):
Yeah, agreed. Okay, before we get.

Welcome back to Bison Hotline on one oh seven point
nine the Fox and Bison sixteen sixty for more breakdown
of today's game, Let's go back live to Applebee's off
sixteenth Street North in Fargo.
Speaker 5 (50:27):
Third and seven, Shamsa Hayes rushes on. He throws right
for Collins Cock and he's got nowhere to go. It's
side the thirty. It's sign the twenty. He'll go on
the way to the house. Touchdown, buys it. Mackai Collins
sixty eight yards from Nathan Hayes, a touchdown for NDSU
with seven to eleven.
Speaker 7 (50:48):
To go in the third quarter.
Speaker 4 (50:50):
Sixty eight yard biggest play of the game for NDSU.
Mackay Collins takes it to the house and that is
our high light of the game brought to you by
it Northland Vapor and CBD in Downtown Fargo, South Fargo,
OZ Goood and Bemidgie Life too short for water down
Choices experienced the best at Northland Vapor and c b D.
(51:13):
Big play there for McKay Collins. You were just you
were waiting for somebody to bust one big for for NDSU.
McKay got one on the on the top side, on
the right side, and you saw two Tennessee State players
hit the deck and it was off to the races.
Speaker 7 (51:29):
It's not gonna be a fun film session for that
Tennessee State team.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
No, no, you don't. You don't like to see two
of your players on the ground. That's that's that's never great.
Absolutely not fifty ahead. Let's talk about how deep that
wide receiver room is. McKay collins with that huge catch.
I mean, you see a guy like Bryce Lance not
produced like maybe he did last year and over these
first two games, but other guys are filling those gaps
and just an incredibly deep room. Yeah. I mean Fid
(51:55):
Niggins even at the tight end getting three catches. Raj
On Nelson, we know what he can do. He had
three catches and including a score today. Collins has got
some breakaway speed and a really big frame to make
some catches. Even Reese Kessel picking up a forty one yarder.
I mean, they've got some guys who again give him
the field. Let him see what that ball looks like
coming in in a in a real game. You never
(52:17):
know when it's you know what, we need one catch here,
We need a third down catch in this spot in
a four wide receiver set, those guys are open. They
need to be able to make that play.
Speaker 7 (52:26):
Absolutely. It's fun to watch a guy like Reese Kessel
have this success that he's had early on because I
remember last year on scout team he put up great reps,
just some incredible catches against our starting defense, and I
always knew that he was going to be a great
player for the Bison.
Speaker 4 (52:41):
Hopefully that continues continues to go as he gets more
and more opportunities. All right, let's take a peek at
that Jiffy Lube of Fargo scoreboard. Some interesting scores from
around the country. I think, looking at the FCS side
of things, probably the most impressive one Austin Pe They
(53:01):
picked up an FBS win last week over Middle Tennessee
twenty eight to six. Is the score that's at Georgia,
not an FCS Georgia, not a directional Georgia. The Georgia Bulldogs,
number four team in the country. Austin P hanging right
with them this score. It was fourteen to three at half,
(53:21):
and Austin P never really let that get out of
get out of control. That's what we were hoping to see.
I think last week in a couple of those other
FBS matchups South Dakota and Iowa State, Montana State, Oregon,
both of those games ended up being being blowouts. Good
on the governors. That's a tough place to go in
(53:43):
and do it, and that's about as much as you
can hope for.
Speaker 7 (53:46):
That's super impressive. I mean, to hold a team like
Georgia to that few points is I mean their defense
must be for real. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (53:53):
Chris Parson, the Austin Peak quarterback, sixteen completions for twenty
three yards through a pick. None of the stats really
are really jumping out a lot of it, I think
is Georgia maybe just not finishing. You look at Austin
p rushing twenty seven carries for forty three yards. That
doesn't exactly inspire a lot of a lot of confidence,
but you know it, you find ways, and certainly Austin
(54:16):
p has has done that to at least keep that
keep that game close, and make Georgia have to work
for it. Gunner Stockton had to throw the ball thirty
four times, which you don't want to do that if
you're Georgia playing and playing an FCS team. Right absolutely
looking elsewhere. We talked about this game earlier. Minnesota picked
(54:36):
up a sixty six to nothing win over Northwestern State
in a game that ended with a little under six
and a half to go in the fourth. Apparently there
was some severe weather in the area and the coaches
got together and said, we're good here, right, We don't
need to send the guys back. Let them get stiff,
let you know, and get them, you know, get them
off of the off the field, and then try to
come back and get rewarmed up. We're good to here, right, Yeah,
(54:58):
we're good. Let's let's let's.
Speaker 7 (55:00):
Hit the plane. Mother nature. It's seen enough of that one. Yeah,
that was it. Yeah, she was she was done with that.
Speaker 4 (55:08):
Another interesting game, Idaho at home against Saint Thomas thirty
seven to twenty three is where the where the final
ended up on that But that game going into the
fourth quarter was a seven point games so knew that
the Tommies as they got got rolling, made the move
up to UH to FCS and football, we're gonna have
the resources to potentially do something. It's a little bit
(55:29):
of a slow build, but Idaho's likely going to be
is likely going to be a playoff team.
Speaker 7 (55:35):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (55:36):
That's encouraging if you're if you're a fan of the Tommies.
Speaker 7 (55:39):
I agree, definitely, how about the Tommies. How about those Tommies.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
So that one getting close to the end of the game,
fourteen point lead, it looks like Idaho is is going
to take care of business there. Northern Iowa ended up
losing thirty one seven to Wyoming. That was again, it
was a ten point game at the half, but that
offense for Northern Iowa, you know, undergoing a coaching change
with coach Farley retiring and stepping away. The valley was
(56:08):
more fun when Northern Iowa was good. Agreed, And I
missed that, hoping that they can get back to that
because that was a real rivalry in the early parts.
Speaker 7 (56:18):
Of the last decade. Yeah, and that dome in Northern
I was really fun to play in when it's packed
and then the fans are going at it.
Speaker 4 (56:25):
Absolutely elsewhere in the valley, thirty eight to fourteen win
for Indiana State over Eastern Illinois Youngstown fifty six seventeen
win over Bob Morris seven o'clock tonight is going to
be the big one of the weekend, though South Dakota
State on the road favored by a few at Montana
State also be keeping an eye on Southern Illinois at
(56:47):
at Purdue. Perdue is about a three touchdown favorite in
that one. But again, this is a show us something.
If you're Southern Illinois, make us believe that this is
a game that can be interesting. This Lukies are in
Fargo this year, so that make us believe that that
game can be something.
Speaker 7 (57:02):
I could see the Sloop's hanging in that one letely, honest. Yeah,
they always I remember playing at sau was always tough.
I know, I'm assuming they're at Purdue, but yeah, there
was a solid team. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (57:13):
A couple other games we're keeping an eye on up
in the FBS. Clemson just scored a touchdown. They're up
by one in the third quarter, on Troy. So Clemson lost.
I believe with LSU last week that they that they
lost to and now having some issues at home against Troy.
Florida just scored number thirteen Florida. They're up one on
(57:35):
South Florida. You'd never like to be in that close
of a game against a directional school from your own state.
Not great, not exactly what you want to see there.
And of course six thirty coming up in about fifteen minutes,
Michigan and Oklahoma will get started. But otherwise that's looking
at the FBS games, probably the big takeaways there, I
(57:57):
guess Iowa State beating Iowa for STSU quarterback Mark Gronowski
at Iowa, but the Cyclones picking up a three point
win at home there.
Speaker 7 (58:07):
Bar Murner there, that.
Speaker 4 (58:08):
Was exactly what you'd expect from that game. I don't
know what the over under was, but take the under
you're probably all right. All right, that's our Jiffy Loop

Let's get back to the breakdown of today's game for
the Bison. This is Bison hotline.
Speaker 5 (01:02:49):
Ermeier and Cokecat Burrika the running back. Saint Remain receiver
right snapping give to Pennu running up the middle, driving
the pile. Watch again, He's gonna get all the way home.
They push across the ball line. Touchdown Bison Brika. Pedu's
already got the hat trick here in the Music City.
His third rushing touchdown, this one with a little alf
(01:03:12):
from his friends, all the wayhead six yards and the
Bison are pouring it on early twenty three to nothing
at Asu with thirteen oh eight to play in the
verse half.
Speaker 4 (01:03:24):
Three touchdowns in the game for Brika, five overall on
the season, and Luke, you had asked earlier taking a
look at, Hey, what's what is that single season rushing
touchdown record? Because the start that Barrika has had at
least mention is warranting a mention. It was Jeff Benram
(01:03:45):
has the school record in nineteen eighty six, coming from
the quarterback position running the old veer option, he had
twenty three. Lamar Gordon had two seasons of twenty two
back in the D two era. You're looking at the
D one era record John Crockett with twenty one in
twenty fourteen, and he's tied with Tyler Roll who had
twenty one in two thousand and seven, five and two.
(01:04:08):
You've you've got a chance. And certainly with the hold
that's he seems to have on that feature back spot
right now, he's he very well could see his name
on this list before the season's done.
Speaker 7 (01:04:19):
Absolutely, I don't want to jinx anything, but he's looking
off to a really good start. And I mean, if
he gets those red zone reps like he's getting, he's
gonna have a lot opportunities to score.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
And I think you know, you see that sometimes when INDSU,
especially during the you know, twenty ten's the big national
championship runs there. There was the season certainly when John
Crockett was easily the feature back. We saw that with
with DJ mcnorton back in twenty ten in that in
that range, but Indisu's had a couple of different backs
(01:04:50):
and while the stable is there and we've seen Scott
look good this season as well. I don't think there's
a question who the best back in that room is,
and that's going to to give a lot of opportunities
to to rack up the scores.
Speaker 7 (01:05:03):
Yeah, there's no question. Yeah, it's hard nowadays in the
landscape of college football that to not go running back
by committee. I mean, those guys get banged up throughout
the season and you need to be able to create
depth in that position. So it's but it's really cool
to see Brika take hold of that.
Speaker 4 (01:05:18):
Yeah, and it's yeah, it's the advantage that he has
certainly starting this he may not I don't think he's
probably going to be approaching some of those those yardage records,
but he's certainly going to be there on touchdowns. When
you get in your you know, air quotes limited, I
guess touches.
Speaker 7 (01:05:33):
That you get, he's he's right there. He is absolutely
right there.
Speaker 4 (01:05:37):
So fun stuff, certainly from from Barrika today, adding to
what we're we're hoping is a is a very impressive
season for for Barrika and the Bison rushing game. Looking
at the offense, we we talked certainly about the game
that that Cole Peyton had today want to touch on
the We touched on a lot of the backups that
have gotten in, not a lot on the on the quarterbacks.
(01:06:00):
Nathan Hayes got in there. He was two for six
with a touchdown. He threw the touchdown to Collins and
did throw an interception, and then Trey Drake getting a
little bit of run there as well, completed the only
pass that he threw. Also, good to get those guys
a little bit of run. I think fans are really excited.
(01:06:20):
We've seen what Cole Payton can do. I think everybody's
got faith in Cole at this point. But senior year,
you know you've only got him for a year. I
think people are just as excited to see what Nathan
Hayes has the potential to do next year.
Speaker 7 (01:06:31):
Yeah, I agree. Nathan Hayes is an incredible athlete. He's
a lot faster than people realize, yea, and also just
has a rocket of an arm. And then Trey Drake
kind of more of a pocket passer, but has a
really good arm as well. I think that being a
backup quarterback at NDSU, it's you kind of take on
the responsibility of watching the starter and seeing how he
(01:06:52):
handles his business, how does he drink water, how does
he go to sleep at night? And that's what Cole
Payton has done with cam past four years. So now
that he's taken the reins, he's fully ready to take
control of that. And you're gonna see that out of
a guy like Nate Hayes, who's gonna be watching Cole,
watching his every move.
Speaker 4 (01:07:08):
He he threw and I forget who he threw the
deep ball to. I know it was on the on
the top side of the screen going right to left,
and he threw the ball sixty yards in the air,
about as fluids and as easy as you're gonna see.
Look like he just kind of just I'm gonna step in,
just kind of toss us a little bit, and sixty
yards later the ball hits the ground. It is a
(01:07:31):
rifle that he has and it is it is a
different type of weapon that the Bison are gonna have there.
Speaker 7 (01:07:35):
Yeah, the ball just jumps off his hand. And I
think that the Bison offense is a good system for
young quarterbacks to play in. Yeah, I think that it's
really friendly for those young quarterbacks to come in and
demand the offense. You could see their qbrs for this game.
I mean they all played really well. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:07:52):
Fun, It's gonna be fun going down. Of course. Cole
Payton a senior, Hayes a junior, Drac a sophomore, got
some talented guys that that we've gotten a chance to
see play a little bit, and that we're going to
get a chance over the next few years to see
what these guys can do. All right, we are going
to take our next break. We'll come back, take a
look at this game, and also coming up, take a
(01:08:13):
look at what what you can expect to see what
that NDSU schedule looks like coming up as well.

is It feels like every time he touches the ball,
he is just itching, itching to break one out.
Speaker 7 (01:13:44):
Yeah, he's a special return man and it's fun to
block for a guy like that that can break one
at any moment. Yeah, let's talk a little bit about
the special teams because I want to paint a picture
for the listeners just how much time and energy goes
into special teams at NDSU. We always say that special
teams will be the difference in games, and it likely
is in most games when offenses and defenses, yeah, they
(01:14:07):
play for the majority of the game, but those big
time plays and special teams can create a spark. And
there's so much time that goes into meetings. I don't
I don't even know how many six am punt meetings
I've been in in my lifetime. It haunts me, but
it's important because it's it's it's so so important in
the game of football, and a lot of teams don't
put a lot of time into it, and that's where
(01:14:29):
you see those big time differences happen. And then a
guy like Jackson Williams going out there and being as
electric as he is, it makes it easy to block
and easy to play.
Speaker 4 (01:14:40):
For a guy like that, you know it's something that
it isn't going to stand out in a game like this,
and even in games where it does matter, there's those
times where you won't even think of it, but it's
it's making a tackle that saves ten yards, that keeps
a team out of field goal rangeold they end up
being five yards out of field goal range and can't
can't attempt a field goal in a close game that
(01:15:02):
that wouldn't have been the case had that special team
or not made that tackle. It's the extra five to
ten yards that you get because you know Jackson Williams
on a kick that's not a punt, that's not kicked
down cleanly, just grabs it and sits on it and
doesn't even get a return. But that saves you ten yards.
Those little things can make a big difference. Now, is
(01:15:24):
the focus on special teams something that you saw all
the way through?
Speaker 7 (01:15:28):
Did that change at all when coach Polosek came in. No,
it's always the number one priority at NDSU. During each
practice and fall camp, there's probably thirty minutes spent on
special teams each practice. So it's important and you see
it come up in games. I mean, and I want
to illustrate just how difficult special teams is too as
(01:15:49):
a player, whether it be running down on kickoff it's
a fifty yards sprint and you're throwing your body at someone.
It's not necessarily it's something that you got to get
up for you I just go out there and have
do it. Or whether it be the punts, which is
the longest play in football and you're playing offense and
then going on to defense. It's the only play in
(01:16:11):
football that you actually switch offense to defense, like basketball
or something like that. So or even on punt return
where you're holding a block for forty yards down the field.
I mean, these things are not easy. It takes a
special athlete to do it. And it's where you're in
your stripes.
Speaker 4 (01:16:26):
At NBSU, we've seen a change in the kickoff at
the professional level where it looks very different than what
we've seen from football for as long as we've been
watching it, with the team with the kicker being the
only one back in the team's lining up whatever it is,
five ten yards apart from each other. Do you like that?
Speaker 7 (01:16:44):
Is that a change you think.
Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
Should be coming to college football?
Speaker 7 (01:16:47):
Where do you stand on that? It's soft? I knew
it a head like me. I lived to run down
on kickoff. There's nothing like that feeling before a game
when you know you're going out there. First, the crowd
is m up after a long tailgate, and then it's
you parking lot and uh and you get to run
down and throw your body at someone and run through
(01:17:09):
someone's face. I mean, there's nothing like it. And that
that that new rule just takes that completely out of
the game, which is sad for me.
Speaker 4 (01:17:15):
Okay, I appreciate giving you the opportunity to get that off.
I feel like you needed that. Yeah, yeah I did.
And then Eli oasick. I mean nothing really under pressure.
We knew he had a big leg from last year.
I don't know, you had one field goal attempt at
twenty two yards and you made it. I guess we
can't ask for a whole.
Speaker 7 (01:17:30):
Lot more than that. Good operation there.
Speaker 4 (01:17:33):
There you go, all right, so take a look at offense, defense,
special teams. We're going to take our final break here
and on the other side, we are going to look
at what is coming up next. Finally, we're gonna get
that first home game here at the Dome next Saturday.
We'll get to the upcoming schedule and what to look
forward to here. Coming up next on Bison Hotline.

Mitchell running left side, barreling his way in. That's stretching across.
Speaker 1 (01:22:07):
The goal line.
Speaker 5 (01:22:08):
Boy the touchdown, touchdown, Bison touchdown files Mitchell, the true
freshman when his first career touchdown, and it comes here
in the Fusic City. As the Bison continue to cruise
here at Nissan Stadium, a two yard touchdown run by Mitchell,
(01:22:28):
they laid at fifty eight to hing when the twenty
seven to play.
Speaker 4 (01:22:33):
Fifty nine to three would be the final margin. NDSU
moving to two to zero with the win over Tennessee State.
One more game in the non conference next Saturday, Southeast
Missouri State will make the trek up to the Fargo
Dome simo so far this season. They lost last week
at Arkansas State, so an FBS loss forty two to
(01:22:54):
twenty four was the final there, and they're just underway
at home against North Alabama. They'll be up for the
celebration of last year's championship team and one more opportunity
for NDSU in the non conference before a bye week,
and then we get it rolling right off the bat
in conference play, hosting the Coyotes from South Dakota.
Speaker 7 (01:23:15):
Yeah, it's gonna be a fun week in this Southeast
Missouri State game. I know a guy who's gonna get
up for this game. And that's Ryan Napoli, Okay, strength
coach at DSU, who used to work there. Ah, he's
going to get the guys going in the weight room
for this one. This one's personal for him, and I
know that the guys are going to be firing on
all cylinders because of that.
Speaker 4 (01:23:32):
Is there something special about that home opener?
Speaker 7 (01:23:35):
There is? Yeah, absolutely. I mean it's the first time
back at the Dome. They've been on two long away trips.
You're comfortable at the Dome, You're in your own fans.
It's gonna be a great show out the white out uniforms. Yeah,
So it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be a fun experience.
Speaker 4 (01:23:50):
Three of the next four weeks at or four games,
I should say at home. Simo mentioned USD. The Bison
will go on the road to start October at Illinois
State and then back home on the eleventh for Southern Illinois.
So that's a that's a good start to the conference
season at home South Dakota Southern Illinois. Two good programs.
They're going to test NDSU. We had fun today. I
(01:24:14):
wouldn't call today exactly a test of what we're going
to see as the season goes along that all changes
when you get into Valley play.
Speaker 7 (01:24:22):
Yeah, it does. It seems like these non cons there's
like a slow build up into yeah, the climax at
South Dakota versus South Dakota. So it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
Gonna be gonna be fun. Today has been fun. Appreciate
you joining and getting your your first taste of the
