go live to Bison Hotline. Here's your host, Brad Jones.

Speaker 13 (04:40):
Oh, welcome in. We get to do it one more time.
Let's finish up and wrap up another Bison victory, this
time on the road in Valley play. Thirty three to
sixteen is the final. North Dakota State will remain as
the number one team in the country taking down the
number six six ranked Redbirds out in normal Illinois. Brad

(05:01):
Jones here with you along with three time national champion
Luke Wertz. And we always get a chance to celebrate
a victory. We love being able to do it. They
had to work for this one today, Luke. Yeah, they did.

Speaker 14 (05:12):
It was a little bit closer than we both expected.

Speaker 13 (05:14):
I think, Yeah, it absolutely was. It was a first
half that looked a little dicey at times, and certainly
a lot of it just because the NDAU offense didn't
have the ball. Illinois State dominated the ball in the
in that first half of play and somehow was still losing. Yeah,
and that was that was wild that NDSU somehow had

(05:35):
the lead despite Illinois State out playing I guess forty
two to nineteen in total plays run in the first half.

Speaker 14 (05:42):
Yeah. Wow, I think that's safety really set them up
for that kind of just swung the momentum all to
them having the whole time of possession for the especially
with the first half.

Speaker 13 (05:52):
You want these tests early NDSU. Typically we see them
have at least one fairly decent test in the non conference.
Didn't really happen this year. You get to open up
valley play against a team you thought was gonna be
good at home coming in South Dakota, who just might
not be good. You go on the road against the
number six team, the first real test that NBSUS had.

(06:15):
They came out with a win. In your eyes, did
they pass the test on this in the way that
they played.

Speaker 14 (06:21):
I think they showed a lot of resiliency. I think
the team came together in that game, and and when
we say that had a lot of momentum in the
first half for those first couple possessions, I mean they
were up for a little bit and then just kind
of had a lot of momentum going and the team
came back and showed a lot of resiliency throughout the
rest of the game.

Speaker 13 (06:37):
It was it was a battle, had to earn it,
but they did just that. And anytime you can get
a three score win on the road at the number
six team in the country, we'll take it and we'll
get to celebrate it and get all of your thoughts
as well. Feel free to give us a call on
our hotline at seven oh one four seven six sixteen sixty.
Speaking of we're gonna get right to it. We got
Less in Washington on our Brady Marts and Associates hot line.

(07:01):
Less Yer on the air, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 15 (07:04):
Hi, thanks a lot. I think that Col Payton can
throw and hurdle, and I credit him and Coach p
squarely for their success so far, because not only Col
Payton playing so well, but coach p for using his
players effectively. I remember maybe two years ago when they

(07:25):
played SDSCU under a different coach, they had an eight
minute drive to score in the fourth quarter when they
were behind by seventeenth points. He had a really beautiful drive,
but it took him eight minutes. So that's changed. I
don't think we're going to have to see that.

Speaker 13 (07:43):
You know, those those eight minute drives certainly have a
place and certainly have a place in NDSU. Less, thanks
so much for the for the phone call you want
him in certain situations, but it was it was a
mixture today from that NDSU offense and you came out
of out a halftime and we saw NDSU go to
the no huddle a little bit and try to get

(08:05):
things moving. When you see that, obviously from your perspective
as being a former player, is that something where you
think NDSU coaches saw something in the Illinois State defense
that they thought they could take advantage of. Or is
that just something to just switch up the momentum and
kind of change the pace a bit.

Speaker 14 (08:24):
I think it could be both. I think, especially nowadays
where they have the iPads and the sidelines, coach can
get in touch in the middle of a game with
what a defense is doing. Maybe if you came back
and ran a no huddle play once they were caught
off guard, maybe that's something you can come back to
later on in the game. But I think also just
the swing in the game kind of cause them to
want to go get into a no huddle situation. And

(08:45):
having a guy like Cole Payton who command the offense
and not necessarily has to have the perfect play called
right away, he can make checks at the line. It's
an easy, easy switch to make.

Speaker 13 (08:55):
And less I think had a great point with with
Cole Payton. What a job he did. You know, you
look at his pass numbers, you know, twelve of fourteen.
It seems like, oh, this is just a ground and
pound type of game for NDSU. The play calling was
much more balanced. It wasn't the thirty six runs to
the fourteen passes that it shows went back and this
is unofficial, just me going back and looking at the

(09:18):
stats from the game. Cole Payton had fifteen rushes, but
ten of those were designed pass plays. He had nine
scrambles and took and took a sack there as well,
So the play calling was really balanced. But Cole with
his legs, it seemed like a lot of times he
took a bad play and made it okay and made

(09:40):
what could have been an okay or a neutral play
into something positive.

Speaker 14 (09:44):
Yeah, there was a lot of plays where you're watching
him roll out of the pocket, You're like, oh, he's
gonna get caught by that guy, but he just somehow
rounded the corner and gained four to five yards. And
that's that's a part of his game and a part
of the reason that he's so hard to stop.

Speaker 13 (09:56):
Yeah, some of that showed up in the stats. I
think the play that Brika got called for a holding
penalty that was another one of those where it really
looked like the Redbirds defense had an angle on him
and then he just turned the corner and is gone.
I called him I think during the game in the
studio here a tank with a nitrous button on it,
and he yah ends up with twelve or fourteen hundred

(10:19):
and ninety four yards and a score through the air
and fifteen carries for seventy nine yards and a score
on the ground. Pretty good. And when you've got that
type of inability to bail out a play that isn't
going the way you hoped. It's one of the hard
parts with watching the game on TV and not being
able to see it in person is just getting a

(10:41):
look at the secondary. The numbers and the way that
game went sure looked like the secondary for Illinois State
played well. I don't think there were a lot of
NDSU players open. But you also had mentioned too Cole
had to run a lot because the Redbirds were coming
after him.

Speaker 14 (10:56):
Yeah, I think the Redbirds d line posed the biggest
threat that NDSU's seen so far. And the young o
line struggled at times, but the fact that you have
Cole at quarterback, it's really nice to have that guy
that can bail you out of times where maybe you
missed a block here, miss a block there, communicated something wrong.
Cole can scramble and make something happen.

Given a congratulations to the coaches and players on a
valley win. Peyton developed into another great quarterback and it's
great to see that he cannot overthrow Bryce Lands beautiful pass.

(11:57):
We'll talk more about that. One defense was good. Special
teams needs to needs to shore up his play and
asking asking to explain the logic of when to catch
the punt and when to when to let it roll.
It always felt like it used to be kind of
the ten yard line was the was kind of the
dividing line where if it's in front of the ten,
you catch it, behind it let it go. Kind of

(12:19):
feels like that's moved back a little bit as it's
as it's gone, but it's how's.

Speaker 14 (12:25):
The ball going to bounce? And you either look good
or not? Right, Yeah, I think that ten yard lines
are pretty good. Yeah, kind of just coaching point as
far as what those guys are taught, and yeah, you
just hope if it lands anywhere within the ten yard line,
it's going to roll into the end zone. So, I mean,
Illinois State made a great play on.

Speaker 13 (12:41):
That they did and one on that on the punt too,
their punter took a sec he caught the ball, took
about a second second and a half because NDSU was
playing safety, they weren't coming after the punt. Certainly no
reason to have your punt return on in that with
where that ball was being punted from. It allowed his
guys to get down the field a little bit more.

(13:03):
They were right there to get the punt and ultimately
take that safety in the two nothing lead. Yeah, all right,
we are going to take our first break here though again.
Give us a call, send us a text. We want
to hear your thoughts on NDSU moving to five and
zero with a win over the Redbirds in Illinois, will

Welcome back to Bison Hotline. We want to hear from
you on today's game. Call us now at seven oh
one four seven six sixteen sixty.

Speaker 26 (17:29):
Tight end right, Williams, tight end left, two flankers left, Bareka,
the single back gets the call off left tackle at
the forty batsing outside thirty he stiff arms a man
on the twenty.

Speaker 12 (17:38):
There he goes down the sidelines, Barrika Pedu he will
scarm touchdown Bison, Barrika all the way forty two yards,
broken tackles and a Bison touchdown to give n DSU
the lead again thirteen to nine.

Speaker 13 (18:00):
Big play there from Brika, getting the Bison in front
there in the first half. He finishes with fourteen carries,
one hundred and sixteen yards and another touchdown. He's up
to eight rushing touchdowns now through through five games. That
run from Berrika showed a lot, showed some speed, but
it wasn't all just a smooth sailing, wide open hole through.

(18:22):
He left some bodies in his wake there.

Speaker 14 (18:24):
Yeah, he did. That was nice stiff arm on a
guy on the outside and prancing at the end zone.
That That was awesome to see out of Burrika.

Speaker 13 (18:31):
Yeah, he had quite the game, you know, eight eight
yards of carry and he was pretty consistent. You were wondering, okay,
first play of the game, the one offensive play the
DSU gets ends up with a safety and Brika didn't
have much of a much of a chance there. He
was met before he was able to able to get started,

(18:52):
but just solid all the way through. You could go
to him multiple times and he's showing that a give
me the ball eighteen twenty times a game. Whatever you need,
I've got it. Certainly showed that again today and DJ
Scott he had a couple of nice runs in there well,
got got into the end zone as well. Five carries
for twenty one yards. As much as Berrika may want

(19:12):
the ball every play, still got to give him a
little bit of a breather. I thought Scott looked pretty
good too.

Speaker 14 (19:18):
Yeah, I thought so too when it sprinkled in at times.
He's a good back and it's good to have a
guy like that behind Berrika because he needs to blow
every once in a while. But Rika's really slidified himself
as the number one back and it's really cool to see.

Speaker 13 (19:31):
Yeah, I don't think there's any question about that. The
running game for NDSU is going to be it's break
and Cole and that's where that's where those yards are
going to come from. They do what they did today,
both of them over five yards of carry, both of
them getting a score. NDS, you certainly going to be
tough to beat. Ball got spread around a little bit
for for NDSU as well. Twelve completions for Cole Payton,

(19:55):
seven different receivers getting those getting those twelve passes. Jackson
Williams kind of knew that he had had the speed,
had the ability in the from what we've seen from
him in the return game. A couple of big plays
from Jackson the passing game today and he was close.

Speaker 14 (20:14):
On one of them. He almost broke away on the one. Yeah,
Jackson just an electric playmaker. Whether it be in the
return game or in the passing game. He's going to
continue to be an incredible player for the Bison.

Speaker 13 (20:24):
It almost feels like that was a role that we
maybe thought Raja would have a little bit more of
this year, where Okay, get him into a little bit
of space and let him do some work. But Jackson's
just got a little bit of an extra jolt. We're
just going to have to live with Rajah making thirty
yard diving catches down sidelines every week because that was

(20:45):
the catch on the sideline for NDSU. Needed a big play,
needed to get something going on. That was an outstanding catch.

Speaker 14 (20:52):
That's just incredible catch after incredible catch for Raja.

Speaker 13 (20:55):
It may only be one or two a game, that
maybe all he gets, but Raja's going to find him
find himself in the highlights. You know, you look at
the NDSU offense and you see the first half NDSU
only scoring fifteen points, Like, okay, that offense, it only runs,
you know, only runs nineteen plays. Got to get going
a little bit. And then you take a look at

(21:16):
what their drive chart looks like at the end of
the game. Started out with the safety, then it's touchdown,
missed field goal touchdown. You know, one play at the
end of the first half, field goal touchdown, touchdown. Kneel
it out. At the end of the game, no punting,
not once, no punting for the Buyson offense on what

(21:36):
for thirty minutes of football kind of felt like a
down game for them.

Speaker 14 (21:41):
Yeah, the first thirty minutes did feel like that. Yeah,
I think especially the time of possession that Onoi State
had that they were always on the field. But the
second half, the offense really turned it into to second
gear and they started rolling.

Speaker 13 (21:53):
And it's where it's where sometimes the feelings and what
actually happened can kind of have a little bit of
a disc because their offense was fine in the first half,
they just didn't have the ball and it's all you
can all you can ask for there. You know, I
had an eight play fifty two yard drive that ended
in a missed field goal by Eli Oazick. But you

(22:14):
get a seven play forty seven yard drive for the touchdown,
you get the big Barika run for the for the touchdown.
And then the offense in the in the second half,
especially when it looked like Illinois State was just going
to score, their offense was really clicking. And we'll kind
of dive into how much of that was the NDSU
defense versus how much of that was the Illinois State offense.

(22:38):
It kind of looked like for a little bit NDSU
was just going to have to outscore Illinois State, and
the offense said, yeah, okay, our defense needs a little
pick me up today. We're gonna be able to do
that because we're going to score every time we touched
the ball.

Speaker 14 (22:50):
Yeah, the offense is indestructible in the second half, and
I think the defense there were yards on the defense,
but those takeaways were absolutely huge throughout the game.

Speaker 13 (22:59):
You know, we did Buison game Day earlier today up
at Applebee's and one of the numbers that really jumped
out to us was seven fumbles, only three of them loft,
but seven fumbles for Illinois State coming into the game.
Put another one on the ground for NDSU today and
you just if you want it, if you want to
hang with NDSU, you cannot make those mistakes.

Speaker 14 (23:20):
No, And who was that the forest that fumble?

Speaker 13 (23:22):
Believe that was Calvin McCastle, my guy picking up the
forest fumble, staling almost to scoop and score there. He
really had a shot. Is that something that will be
talked about during film this week.

Speaker 14 (23:37):
He'll get teased about those eleven tackles make up for it.
And he played a rock solid game as well.

Speaker 13 (23:44):
It's it's nice when that's not your only play that
you're gonna have. It's like, okay, we got we got
other things that went really well here that he'll be
able to talk about, but but yeah, NDSU needed it.
That's where they got their first touchdown, the Cole Payton
touchdown off of that off of that turnover, and NDSU's
just going to make you pay when you make those
kind of mistakes. There wasn't that many of those kind

(24:07):
of mistakes for Illinois State, but you give them one
and that just allows NDSU to stretch it and now
all of a sudden, Okay, we went from either being
tied or maybe having a two point lead to now
we're down six, and that gives NDSU one score away
from a two score lead. And if NDSU's up two scores,
good luck to you. Yeah, that was a huge swing.
Kind of reminded me of the STSU game. And Cody

(24:28):
Heisman forced that fumble kind of a similar where it
could be anyone's game. Maybe you almost sit had a
little bit of momentum there, but just shut it down
with that fumble. Absolutely so fun stuff from the NDSU offense.
We've got a lot more to get to. We want
to hear your thoughts as well, offense, defense, anything that
you saw today, give us a call seven oh one
four seven six, sixteen sixty. We are going to take

(24:52):
a break. On the other side, let's dive a little
bit more into that NDSU defense that's coming up next.
Here on Bison Hotline.

North Dakota State.

Speaker 13 (29:53):
For a human being as big as he is, it
doesn't feel like you should be able to hurdle somebody
and make it look as easy as he did on
that play. If you're looking for something to put on
a highlight reel for some for some scouts, if you
put the touchdown pass to Bryce Lance and follow it
with this run. That's something pretty special for Cole Payton.

Speaker 14 (30:16):
That's quite the resume. And I've seen him with my
own eyes jump forty inches in the weight room, so
I'm not surprised by that by any means.

Speaker 13 (30:22):
That's okay. So is he winning a slam dunk contest,
then he's got to be up there.

Speaker 14 (30:28):
I mean, I've never seen him dunk of basketball, but
I assume that it'd be pretty easy.

Speaker 13 (30:33):
And with some power too. The cold Payton touchdown run.

the defense. Spent a lot of time talking about the offense.

Speaker 13 (31:24):
Back here on Bison hotline, Brad Jones and Luke words
with you here along with Nick Brindemule in the increase
all right on our text line. Bison defense was clearly
caught off balanced by the Redbirds hurry up offense, something
that we got to get fixed. What was your read
with the pace that Illinois State was playing with.

Speaker 14 (31:41):
Yeah, I think that they found something that they liked
in that hurry up offense, and I think that they
can catch a defense off guard. I think that Tommy
Rittenhouse is getting outside of the pocket a lot, which
extended plays and was a real problem for our defense
this game, along with the hurry up offense. The hurry
offense is as hard as once an offense gets into
a groove, and you're maybe not making tackles as good

(32:04):
as you used to because you're a little bit more gassed.
You're not getting to play in as quickly as you
want to. It could be a real issue and something
that throughout the game we corrected. But something early on
that we struggled with.

Speaker 13 (32:16):
I'm gonna I'll put you on the spot here. If
you remember a game where maybe long gave up a
long first drive, turn around the offense either three and
out or turnover. Something happens where you're back on the field.
It feels like right after a long drive and all
of a sudden, you've been on the field for ten
of the first eleven minutes of the game. What's that
feeling like for a defense?

Speaker 14 (32:38):
Not a good feeling that's crushing, it's but I mean,
you condition throughout the summer for those for those reasons,
get to get in the best shape possible in order
to play football like that. I remember a game in particular,
the Incarnate Word game in the playoffs. I think that
was twenty twenty two or twenty three.

Speaker 13 (32:58):
Yeah you're twenty three.

Speaker 5 (32:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (32:59):
They ran a hurry up offense and it just seemed
like they ran play after play after play after play, and.

Speaker 13 (33:06):
It was a long game that they sprinted a marathon
in that game. We've seen some hurry up offenses that
have come through the Fargo Dome over the years. Most
of them they start running a hurry up offense and
then they get hit a few times, and all of
a sudden, that hurry up offense starts to move a
little slower. It was all gas, no breaks for incarnate

(33:27):
word in that game. I don't think we quite put
Illinois State in that category today. But Rittenhouse was solid.
He threw one interception to Ryan Jones kind of late
in the game that really helped steal things up for NDSU.
Otherwise overall, took pretty good care of the ball. And
we talked during game day about Winkers right, he's a

(33:50):
tough guy to bring down. But even with that, it
felt like every time he was touching the ball it
was five or six yards, but he didn't really get anything.
He didn't really have any home runs. His longest carry
today was eleven yards. So even though it felt like
he would break a couple tackles, Byson defense never let
him get away.

Speaker 14 (34:10):
No, and that's huge. Don't don't let up the explosive play.
That's something that we preach all the time. As long
as you're not doing that, you're gonna win a lot
of football games.

Speaker 13 (34:17):
Yeah, the longest play, let's see, what was longest play
that NDSU gave up today? Twenty six yards was the
longest now was a pass play that gave up one
run to Dawson for twenty three yards. But there wasn't
any of the big strikes. There wasn't a forty two
yard you know, a forty two yard run that Barika had.
There wasn't the fifty one yard run that Jackson or

(34:37):
a fifty one yard reception that Jackson Williams had, not
even the thirty two yard or that Rajah had, even
their big plays. It was constantly eight, nine, ten, eleven,
you know, fifteen. They weren't getting any of those big
home runs that are going to change the scoreboard in
a real hurry.

Speaker 14 (34:53):
No, And that's frustrating as an offense. Yeah, their thing
and when are we going to get one to go? Like,
when is it going to just break open? And and
that never happened. And it seemed like the defense overall,
maybe they didn't tackle as good as they have for
the first few games. Maybe they struggle a little bit
with a hurry up offense, but overall they didn't have
any major lapses. And that's winning football.

Speaker 13 (35:15):
Yeah, And some of that I think as well as
Illinois State played and as much closer of a talent
level as Illinois State is to NDSU than what we
have seen for any of the four opponents for the
Bison prior to that, there was still a difference. I think,
a different level of athlete. There was probably some space

(35:36):
to get there, but NDSU was able to close and
make some of those plays that didn't allow them to
get to be something out of hand.

Speaker 14 (35:42):
Yeah, I agree with that. I think that that there
definitely is a margin there and I think that that
was something that they shrunk a little bit in the
first half and other than that, throughout the rest of
the game, it was.

Speaker 13 (35:54):
Nails Illinois State on the offensive side. How does this
game make you think that Illinois State is going to
be a team that'll be a factor come playoff time.

Speaker 14 (36:05):
I think there'll be a solid playoff team. I think
that they have a really talented quarterback that's going to
be leading them, and I think that they're wide receiver
group's good. They looked to me, they looked good in
the trenches. I mean they were blowing us off the
ball every once in a while and getting in fist
fights in the trenches. So I have no doubt that
they're going to be a solid playoff Teambkowitz was really good.

(36:27):
And some of that it's again it's it's the TV
versus in person view. That's a little bit tougher to see.
But he was open a lot. And how much of
that is him winning one on one matchups? How much
of that is just familiarity that Illinois State has with
NDSU's defense and knowing if if Rittenhouse gets a little

(36:48):
bit of time, we're going to be able to find
some gaps in the defense. But he looked good and
he caught almost everything that came his way. Yeah, he
looked really good. And at the beginning of the week
of every every game week, coach Wilson said, the defense
down and have a couple of players outlined as hey,
these are their guys, like soap quotes. Is definitely a
guy that he starred. This is one of their playmakers.
We got to make sure we find a way to

(37:09):
stop this guy. And he still found ways to make plays,
So shout out to him. I mean, he's a great athlete.

Speaker 13 (37:13):
Yeah, had a twenty six yarder, but even that, you
know his seven catches seventy five yards. Most of his
catches were under ten yards, so he had a few nice,
nice ones on third downs. I think that's one area
that if you're NDSU, you're really looking. I mean, they
gave up in the first quarter, gave up two third
and tens. You know, you get Illinois State in those

(37:34):
third and ten situations. Historically, that is you're off the
field for NDSU in Illinois State. It's not what happened.
They were able to extend those drives and make that
NDSU defense work a little more. They had another third
and ten later on where I think they got nine
and a half and ended up getting getting stopped. So

(37:55):
those long third downs, that was the one thing that
kind of stood out to me from the defense like
that it's very uncharacteristic.

Speaker 14 (38:02):
Yeah, I agree with that, and I think that it
was almost like Groundhog's Day where it would be Rittenhouse
rolling out to the right, throwing across his body and
finding an open receiver. That's what seemed to be like
almost all their third and tens. So something that we
definitely need to work on. Containing the quarterback. There were
a lot of times where he got out of the
outside of the contain, even if it was a corner
coming on a blitz or yep, someone just trying to

(38:24):
a d end maybe get down to his gap a
little bit. So definitely something that I'm sure Coach Olson
is going to be preaching on for this next game.

Speaker 13 (38:31):
There'll be some film, there'll be some some things to
go over there, that is for sure. All Right, We've
got more to get to here. Again, give us a
call or send us a text at seven to one
four seven sixteen sixty and we will. We'll get to
some more things, including let's call it the experience of
watching that game on the production side on ESPN Plus

(38:55):
today that was well, that was entertaining. We'll get to
exactly what it was on the other side. This is
Bison Hotline.

All right, there's a Cole Peyton with the with the

got you in here. I think we gotta go defense
for our player of the game. The broadcast crew they
went offense. They went with with Barika. We gotta go defense.
You know who we're going with.

Speaker 14 (44:59):
I know you gotta see it.

Speaker 13 (45:01):
Kelton McCaslin. McCaslin with the force fumble. It was it
was an outstanding play. That was a big one for
NDSU to get the get that momentum shifted over a
little bit and get things going in in NDSU's territory. Nick,
do you have that, Well, let's grab that highlight here

(45:22):
for Kelton. We'll play that here in just a sec

Speaker 12 (45:47):

Speaker 5 (45:59):
Dawson coughed it.

Speaker 12 (46:00):
Up, staying pous time and then DSU will take over
what sixty three remaining in the first quarter.

Speaker 13 (46:08):
It was an awesome play by Calton and again that
the Bison defense needed a play. It was one of
those one of those situations where you felt like, okay,
that momentum is going. Illinois State's moving the ball again,
and just like that, that momentum shifted.

Speaker 14 (46:24):
Huge play, big time play in the game. And I
know Calton Neilson made some other plays throughout the game.
I remember a big hurry that he had on a
big time play. So yeah, he was all over the
place to this game.

Speaker 13 (46:34):
Yeah, at the at the d N position, four tackles,
two of them solo had had a TfL and a
quarterback hit along with that force fumble, not the only
one on the on the d line though, is something
you don't usually see from somebody in the middle. But
Keenan Wilson and you would you'd mentioned him before the
show started. Seven tackles to solo and had a sack

(46:56):
and a quarterback hit in there. That is some work
from a big fellow. You usually don't get your hands
on people as often and that often. And Keenan Wilson
was outstanding today.

Speaker 14 (47:05):
Keenan was an absolute monster today. He's got a twitch
to him where he can shock shed get off blocks
really fast in the pass rush. I know the sack
he had hit a nice spin move as well. Yeah,
just he has a huge motor and he's playing super
well in the first part of this season.

Speaker 13 (47:23):
Yep. You mentioned also on the defensive line, you had
mentioned during game day Toby and Aa was your guy.
He had half a sack in there as well, teaming
up with Donovan wollen to take down Rittenhouse. The linebacking crew,
I would say, not a ton of plays that really
jumped out at you necessarily, but they made the plays.
They didn't leave it for the secondary to have to

(47:44):
make tackles. We mentioned Staling earlier. He had eleven tackles.
Logan Cop I would say, probably a quiet nine tackles,
but still nine tackles, including three solos. Wollan had eight
tackles and a pair of solos as well. You want
to see those linebackers at the top of that tackle chart.
They're not letting the players get to that safety and

(48:05):
get to that corners where they're having to try to
make any of those touchdown saving tackles.

Speaker 14 (48:09):
Yeah, those guys are tackling really well. I'm playing with
a lot of confidence right now. Like you said, Cops
had like a quiet nine tackle game. It seems like
he's had a bunch of those in a row. But
I know he's gonna have a game where he just
breaks out here pretty.

Speaker 13 (48:21):
Soon he's around the ball too much for it not
to find him at at some point. But he's he's
he's right where he needs to be. Go to the
text line for for a couple of things. One comment
that we got in says, I think moving to FBS
is more attractive simply to get away from the the
Valley TV production. Uh how does this game draw the

(48:42):
C squad? The TV coverage was I'll edit it and
we'll say not great.

Speaker 6 (48:48):
It was.

Speaker 13 (48:48):
It was rough on a on a few spots there
where uh where we missed, we missed the safety they
the TV crew went to the media breaking. Some of
this is we have a little bit of an advantage
sitting in the in the studio here where we're listening
and we know when they're supposed to go to uh,
go to the media breaks in the media timeouts because

(49:09):
Sam Niederman is a professional and he gets us to
the media timeouts when they are supposed to happen, and
he kept it there and all of a sudden we
looked TV It's like, why why did they go to break?
And they're having to come back and show us and
the number of times that we missed plays. Was was
not that, I would say, not the production level that
we're used to.

Speaker 14 (49:26):
Yeah, and I think the view on one of the
extra points, like is that good or is that not right?
I can't tell at all.

Speaker 13 (49:33):
It looked like it was a mile wide to the
left and like, oh, no, that's actually the that's the
right side of the of the upright, that's not as Yeah,
there were a couple of camerangles that were that were interesting.
So yeah, it was. It was an interesting view experience.
I'm with you there. Uh Mark texted in, was there
anyone on the team that was hurt? I don't It's

(49:53):
hard to say. I don't think so. I can't remember
if it was on the air, if it was during
one of the breaks. But but Phil Hansen had asked
Andy Rickoff doing sidelines during the game if there were
any injuries, and Andy was like, nothing, nothing really, that's
jumping out. So Andy, if if anybody would know outside
of the team, would be Andy, who was who was

(50:14):
right there on top of things. But on the road
against number six team in the country. We talked pregame
that yes, you fairly healthy so far. We saw Chris
Harris get back in and he made a big catch
in the game as well. Seems like things were Things
were pretty good other than oh you're our back, our
linebacker that we talked about pregame, Ray James, thank you

(50:35):
didn't play. I think he was. He wasn't in shoulder
pads for most of the game, so was doubtful for
most of the week. Looked like he was gonna be
a go earlier and just must not have been feeling
right with the shoulder.

Speaker 14 (50:47):
Yeah, and getting that guy back would be awesome for
the depth and the lineback and crew. But that that
that crew right now is firing on all the cylinders,
so as long as they can stay healthy, it's going
to be a good a good show for that.

Speaker 27 (50:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (50:57):
It was a really fun defensive effort by NBSU and
one that you're going to have some of those games
that are that you're going to have to put in
a little bit of extra extra time in. They did
that proved that that they can do it and hopefully,
hopefully next week, you know, the offense will put a
few more longer drives together and give them a little
bit more of a breather. All right. Our game week

pointing over.

Speaker 7 (55:54):
The line, Clapps with the ball rush is on.

Speaker 13 (55:56):
He throws quick. It's caught the end crowd.

Speaker 12 (55:58):
It's caught by jack Williams, a crossmitfield at the forty.
He's got his sideline in the thirty. It's side the
twenty and then take it down out of bounds. Dexter
Nee Camp had the tackle, but not before action Jackson
with a huge third down pickup third down at eighty
takes it to the twenty, a gain of fifty one

(56:19):
first down at DSU.

Speaker 13 (56:21):
Boy nicknames can sometimes be hit or missed, but I
don't know that action Jackson can fit any better for
Jackson Williams. That was an outstanding play and Andy Rickoff
actually had this on the sideline. It was confirmed by
coach Polisek after the game. That was a Cole Peyton call.
He saw the blitz coming, made the call to adjust

(56:43):
the route to Jackson Williams to that inside slant and
Jackson just took off, so great great job by Andy
noticing it, great read by Cole Peyton and Jackson Williams
and get him an open space and away he went.

Speaker 14 (56:55):
I love that Cole Peyton in action, Jackson get chemistry
going early on in the year, going to be a
connection that we're going to be seeing a lot of,
I think for the rest of the season.

Speaker 13 (57:03):
Man, he just adds such a different dimension with not
just on some of those you know, talk a look
at a guy that you want to get a bubble
screen if you see some numbers advantage on the outside
or something quick. But if he's on the side, if
he goes deep, that's gonna be another place that Cole
Payton's gonna at least keep an eye on. You know,
his focus is always going to be on number five.

(57:26):
But if Jackson's on one side and you see those
safeties tilting a little bit too far over there, man
throw it and let's see if let's see if any
of the corners can keep up with eighty one.

Speaker 14 (57:37):
Yeah, and you see the ball in his hands, you
do it. You don't know what's going to happen, but
it's it's something. Something's good to happen, gonna happen for
the buys and similar to I'm a big Bears fan,
so watching Devin Hester returns sure punts and kicks, it
was like, oh, is this He's here to turn this one?
I don't know, but a similar feeling I have when
when Action Jackson has the ball in his hands.

Speaker 25 (57:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (57:55):
We've had a few of those guys over the years.
I mean, you think punt returns a lot of times,
I think we go Ryan Smith and R Ryan was different.
He certainly had some speed, but it was his shiftiness
and acceleration that I think really set him apart and
gave him some really good opportunities and fun memories on
some of those returns. It feels like with Jackson it's

(58:17):
if you let him get three steps and get up
to speed, you better have an angle because otherwise it's
going to be real, real tough.

Speaker 14 (58:22):
Yeah it is, and I think recently Jayden Price also
was a guy could get yep, get and make something happen.
But yeah, with Jackson, it's more just straight line speed.
He's gonna outrun you.

Speaker 13 (58:32):
And he certainly did that on his fifty one yard reception.

It was certainly the most impactful pass play. I would say,
when you flip the half the field on one play.
But I don't know that we've I don't know if
we've mentioned it yet if we may be a little

(59:15):
derelict in that the touchdown passed that Cole Payton through
to Bryce Lance. That was about as pretty ball as
you are going to see in that in that scenario,
you know how much time those guys have spent together
practicing that. But when he threw that ball, Bryce was
on the what somewhere between the ten and the fifteen
yard line when that ball left his hand, and I

(59:37):
don't think you could have paused time and placed that
ball in a better spot than where Cole Payton threw it.

Speaker 14 (59:42):
It was absolutely perfect. And yeah, that connection is a
fun one to watch whenever the ball gets thrown over
to Bryce Lance, you're you're you're in for a treat.
And it's been like that through last.

Speaker 11 (59:52):
Year as well.

Speaker 13 (59:53):
Yeah, it's it's it's just so much fun to watch.
You know, those guys are are gonna be able to
to make those connections. Got one other, one other text
that came in. We were talking about the injuries watching
the highlights. It looked like Barika grabbed his right hamstring

(01:00:13):
after his touchdown run and went, don't fall for that, folks,
this is listen. I'm an old guy here, certainly the
resident old guy in the studio. It's all part of
the celebration. I thought he was gonna he didn't go gritty.
I thought he was gonna go into the gritty afterwards.
But Barrika was fine, Yeah, it's a new age celebration.

Speaker 6 (01:00:31):
There.

Speaker 14 (01:00:31):
You go a little bit mean to the fans because
you know, you don't know, you don't know what's going
on with it at times. But yeah, hopefully, hopefully it
never happens where it's not the celebration.

Speaker 13 (01:00:40):
That's right, that's right. But it was it was fun
stuff and certainly again Buyson offense was great today. Byson
defense great when it mattered. They just did not let
anything big happen. A couple of touchdowns for Illinois State.
But if you give up sixteen points on the road
at the number six team in the country, we'll take

(01:01:02):
that all the time. Our offense should be able to
score more than sixteen points in every game this year

Speaker 26 (01:05:44):
Receiver right sack the whiz receiver left his lord. Here's
rittenhouse out on the gun on first and ten. What's
her up the middle and he's going down? He is
down back in the midfield logo. Kaden Wilson with the
Bison sack. He takes them all the way back to
the fifty Yeah loss up twelve.

Speaker 13 (01:06:01):
There's your guy, Keenan Wilson with the sack there in
the first quarter thirty three sixteen NDSU taking down Illinois State,
Brad Jones and Luke Wurtz here wrapping up the game
on Bizon Hotline. Not the only game going on.

Speaker 27 (01:06:15):
It was.

Speaker 13 (01:06:15):
It was almost kind of I don't know, scary Saturday.
I guess as a lot of the top teams in
the FCS, they were tested today. Certainly we just finished
watching one of them here a little bit ago. Montana
moves to five and oho overall two and oh in
the Big Sky. But they needed fourteen points unanswered in
the fourth quarter to do it forty two to thirty

(01:06:36):
eight win over Idaho State, which Idaho State has been
about as big of a non factor in the Big
Sky as you can possibly be. But that's that's one
that they had to work for. And if you want
to run a gun game, that was it. IoT threw
for three hundred and fifty yards, a touchdown and a
score for Montana. Cook for Idaho State, threw for four

(01:06:56):
hundred and twenty one yards on fifty four passes, had
two touchdowns, and through each quarterback through a pick. Leading
rushers were fifty one yards and forty eight yards between
the two teams. So we weren't worrying about the running
game there. Let's just throw it and have some fun.

Speaker 14 (01:07:11):
Yeah, those secondary coaches are gonna be having the next
couple of days now.

Speaker 13 (01:07:15):
They'll have a lot of things to look at, that's
for sure. The other headliner in the FCS today was
STSU on the road at Youngstown State. The Jacks, they
were down seventeen to seven at halftime, scored twenty one
straight in the third quarter to take the lead. Youngstown
State came back, made a game, came down to an

(01:07:37):
on side kick with about thirty seconds left, but the
jack Rabbits able to hold on thirty five thirty was
the win. Loftridge, the running back for South Dakota State,
twenty five carries, one hundred and seventy six yards and
four touchdowns, all four touchdowns coming in the second half.
That's about as good a line on the road, especially
a Youngstown team that I think is going to be

(01:08:00):
a factor in the valley this year.

Speaker 14 (01:08:01):
Yeah, I'm hoping to see that stat line out of
Devon h Chan this week from my fantasy.

Speaker 13 (01:08:05):
Yeah you go. We should also throw a boat brunt
guard for Youngstown State through for two hundred and seventy
five yards, was twenty nine to forty four through for
three touchdowns, had twenty two carries and one hundred and
thirty yards and another score on the ground. So if
we're looking for a dual threat quarterback, there's our guy
in DSU. I believe. November one, Youngstown is coming to

(01:08:27):
the Fargo Domes. So that's that's gonna be maybe a
little bit more interesting of a game than we thought.
Their wide receiver Tom Zak, actually caught all three of
those touchdown passes from Brunt Guard as well, so they
got some players on the offensive side.

Speaker 14 (01:08:42):
Yeah, the Valley has great teams. It's no should be
no surprise to anyone. I think we overlooked even the
Sollinois State team a little bit. I mean, yeah, they
came out playing.

Speaker 13 (01:08:50):
So yeah, we'll also throw Bullock in there for South
Kota State. Ten catches one hundred and sixty two yards,
So it seems like South Kota State's always got the
at least one or two receivers that have a lot
of talent, and Bullock certainly had a good game today. Elsewhere,
another rank versus rank matchup in the FCS out in
the UAC, Austin p is able to hold home field

(01:09:13):
a forty four to thirty win over the previously unbeaten
West Georgia Wolves, So good win for the Governors. I
think they got a good shot to be a playoff
team this year. Parson threw for three hundred and forty
six yards and three scores for the Governors. You see Davis,
another top ten FCS team. They had their hands full

(01:09:33):
with cal Poly, who's been another team who has been
a long time since cal Poly has been a factor.
But Davis, they had to come back in the fourth quarter.
Thirty four to twenty seven was the final. A win
on the road. That's one of those if we can
borrow every cliche, you know, you throw out the record
books on the rivals and cal Poly though at least
frisky frisky out in the Big Sky. You're you're too

(01:09:57):
young to remember it. I remember the Great West Football
Conference back in the day when cal Poly and NDSU
had had some pretty good battles. Another rank versus rank
matchup out in the Big Sky. Montana State thirty four
to ten win on the road at Northern Arizona. The
Lumberjacks had gotten out to an early lead, but twenty
seven unanswered points in the second and third quarter for

(01:10:18):
Montana State put that one away. Lampson had two hundred
and thirteen yards in the air and a pair of scores.
Davis had ten carries, seventy three yards and a score.
Woods had three catches for one hundred yards, all for
Montana State to lead the way for the Bobcats. Bobcats
now at four and two in the valley. The one
team that did what they were supposed to do, begrudgingly,

(01:10:40):
would have to be the Fighting Hawks thirty five to seven.
They go on the road to Cedar Falls and take
down Northern Iowa in the Unidome. Speaking of teams that
are non factors, I guess we present the Northern Iowa Panthers.

Speaker 14 (01:10:52):
Yeah, I guess we can. We can absolutely present that
at this point.

Speaker 18 (01:10:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:10:56):
Next week's opponent for NDSU, Southern Illinois held home against
Indiana State fifty five to twenty seven. Was the final
in that one, So I hope you had the overs
pretty much across the across the landscape today, Southern Illinois
now I believe four and one and one to zero
in valley play. Williams had was nineteen to thirty one

(01:11:19):
for two hundred and twenty six yards and two scores,
and Robinson had nine carries for one hundred and twenty
four yards and a score. So, LOOKI team should be fun.
It should be be an interesting one coming back to
the Fargo Dome next week. A couple other interesting games
around the FCS Tarlton State fifty two to forty two
at home over a Southern Utah team that played well

(01:11:42):
today Incarnate Word who still bad for them thirty one
to nine. They lose at home to Stephen F. Austin.
Take a quick look at the FBS as well. Ohio
State blows out the Gophers forty two to three. That
one in the Horseshoe. A couple of upsets though in
the FBS, the Big One, Ucla picking up their first

(01:12:03):
win of the season at home hence Penn States. The
Nitney Lions falling to three and two and zero to
two in the Big Ten after losing to Oregon last week.

Speaker 14 (01:12:12):
Oh Man losing to it. It was a emotional loss
last week in overtime the Oregon and then this is
kind of a hopefu we'll get back game and they didn't.
They didn't do so, so rough start from Nitney Lions
for sure.

Speaker 13 (01:12:25):
I mean, they're pretty much going to have to win
out if they want to see the playoffs at or
have even have a chance at the playoffs at this point.
In the SEC, Florida with an upset win at home
in the Swamp over number nine Texas Arch Manning unable
to get the job done there twenty nine to twenty one.
The final, Florida picking up a win over the Longhorns.
Going to be an uphill climb for the Longhorns now

(01:12:45):
as well. Those two losses were starting to see some
teams that are going to be at that two loss
two loss threshold a little bit earlier than they want
to be, that are going to need to win out.

Speaker 14 (01:12:54):
The SEC is such a beast. Yeah, yep, MVFC of
the FBS.

Speaker 13 (01:12:59):
There you go, There you go. Alabama thirty to fourteen
win over Vanderbilt. Miami goes on the road at number
eighteen Florida state, Miami number three in the country. They
stay undefeated twenty eight twenty two as they pick up
the win. I'd say those are kind of the big game.
So a fun weekend of football. If you had multiple

Speaker 12 (01:18:00):
Peyton gets the knee high snap, fades it down the
left side looking for price. He's got it on the
left side of the end zone and it is a
touchdown touchdown Bison Bryce Lance from Cole Peyton twenty three
yard strike. He tucked it in on the left side
of the ed zone and the Bison laid it by

(01:18:20):
two scores.

Speaker 13 (01:18:21):
Again it's twenty four to sixteen. Bison would stretch it
out thirty three sixteen is your final NDSU winning on
the road at Illinois State. All of our game week
coverage of NDSU against Illinois State brought to you by
Rusco Windows and Cabinetry over seventy years and four generations.
It's easy to see how more than a million installations

(01:18:43):
have made Rusco the Window and Cabinet Experts online at
Rusco Window Company dot com. All Right, we'll say kind
of special teams towards the towards the end here part
of it was there, just wasn't a whole lot of it.
It was you know, NDSU did not, So it'll kind
of erase that, erase that part of it on the

(01:19:05):
on the special teams for NDSU returning not not a
whole lot there for for nd s U. On the
on the return side of things, Eli oasick missfield goal.
Had you know, you get you get thrown out a
rhythm a little bit when you kick one, have it
blocked the guys off side, you recover the fumble, have
to turn around kick it again, miss the kick. But

(01:19:27):
also you're the kicker, make the kicks, so you know,
and Eli's gonna, yeah, Eli's gonna be the one that's
gonna say that above anybody else.

Speaker 14 (01:19:34):
Yeah, to be fair, I couldn't tell if it was
in or not Mas on the team, but yeah, he's
got to make that one for sure for the return team.
I guess I'll just highlight the South Dakota pund that
or sorry not sounds good. Illinois State pund that led
to the the safety. Uh, just an incredible play for them,
at least on that end, but not much you can

(01:19:55):
do if you're if you're Jackson there.

Speaker 13 (01:19:57):
You know, we were all talking in the studio and
it seemed really strange for Illinois State to be punting
at their own thirty four yard line or wherever it
was they were on. Like, I get that, your kickers
not Eli Ozick, who can make kicks from fifty yards,
so it limits your options a little bit. But the
way their offense had been moving the ball, I didn't
understand why they didn't go for it. Like, yeah, it

(01:20:19):
was a little bit longer, it was least seven eight
yards something like that. But I had a little bit
of confidence in my offense there. But I guess if
you can down it at the one and get a safety,
then that ends up working out pretty good too.

Speaker 14 (01:20:30):
Yeah, you see that one going for a touchback and
you're thinking, why did they go for it? But right
the fact that it worked out for him, it did
pretty well. Yeah, three kick returns for Jackson Williams for
twenty three yard average. There so nothing nothing there, And
later in the game we did get the get the
field goal from Eli Oazick from thirty eight yards out.

Speaker 13 (01:20:52):
That looked in the third quarter that that was a
big one. That stretches it to two scores. And you
always feel good when an NDSU defense out there. If
you can get up two scores in the second half,
you feel like you're bringing it home. Yeah, and you'd
love to see you get back and make it right kick.

Speaker 42 (01:21:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:21:09):
I also want to highlight after that safety. I can't
remember it was a punt or a kick that we had.

Speaker 13 (01:21:13):
We kicked it. We kicked it.

Speaker 14 (01:21:15):
Eli just boomed that kick and we tackled them at
the twenty five yard line, which usually doesn't happen on
after a safety because you're backed.

Speaker 5 (01:21:21):
Up so far.

Speaker 18 (01:21:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (01:21:23):
I Eli did kick one out of bounce during the game,
and I think the return guy for Illinois State let
that one go thinking it was going to bounce out
of bounds because it was real close to the sidelines.
Got a nice bounce that that brought it back in
and kept it alive. But you know what, a lucky bounce,
a lucky bounce here or there, you know what we're

(01:21:45):

Touchdown Bison, DJ Scott. When a Biason touchdown five yards
and into the house and now NDSU with a two
score lead.

Speaker 13 (01:27:07):
Per Good and there it was kind of the that
final exclamation point that NDSU needed to put the game away.
DJ Scott finding his way into the end zone thirty
three sixteen the final, NDSU with the win. As we
turn our attention now to next week and a different
Illinois team, Southern Illinois will be making their way from
Carbondale into the Fargo Dome, Southern Illinois last year against

(01:27:31):
NDSU was a twenty four to three final. NDSU picked
up the win. Luke, you were a part of that game,
it was. It was an interesting game, to say the
least from Southern Illinois.

Speaker 14 (01:27:41):
Yeah, playing down in Carbondale was always kind of an
odd place to play. I don't know, it always felt
like a game there was just always had weird outcomes.
I remember we broke a long winning streak in Carbondale
and I think twenty twenty one maybe it was. But anyways,
last year they had they were starting a true rushman quarterback.
I think their top three guys were injured and they

(01:28:03):
had a GA dressing up to make sure that they
can they could have another backup quarterback if if that
guy got hurt. So from last year, I remember they
had a solid defense, limited the run game pretty well,
but they ran a lot of screen balls. I think
that was partly to do with the fact that they
were had a true freshman quarterback starting back there and
they didn't want to let our pass rush get to them.
But I do remember that about the game, and I

(01:28:26):
always I always know that Southern is going to put
out a good product.

Speaker 13 (01:28:29):
Yeah, I've been solid so far this season. They are
coming in at four and one. Their only loss is
to Purdue. That was a thirty four to seventeen win
for the boiler Makers in West Lafayette two in week
two of the season, they beat you T. Martin. They
beat Thomas Moore, which I believe would be a non

(01:28:50):
D one win. There beat Simo, so we got a
common opponent with them so far this season. That was
a fifty nine to thirty one game two weeks ago,
so certain we'll give up some points. Gave up some
points to Indiana State today. They won that one in
Carbondale fifty five to twenty seven. So they've back to
back weeks putting up fifty burgers on teams. NDSU's offense

(01:29:12):
is gonna have to bring it, but that defense is
going to be tested as well.

Speaker 14 (01:29:15):
Yeah they are. It's gonna be a good Valley game.
We're into Valley Conference now, anything could happen.

Speaker 13 (01:29:20):
Absolutely. Yeah. DJ Williams is the Selukis quarterback. He's been solid.
You look at the Simo game, he was eighteen of
twenty five for three hundred and forty two yards and
four touchdowns. Also ran the ball, had ten carries for
one hundred and fifty one yards and two scores, including
a seventy five yarder. So he's a playmaker. And NDSU

(01:29:41):
is going to have another guy at quarterback who can
make some plays and a solid receiver to Vincent Davis.
The third eight catches one hundred and eighty five yards
and two scores against Simo. So they'll put up some
points and they'll be they'll certainly be ready. But they've
given up some points against some certainly inferior teams to India.

Speaker 14 (01:30:00):
Yeah, Vincent Davis, I've heard that name for so many
years now. We've been on the team forever. But I
do remember that quarterback as well. I remember watching film
when they played Oklahoma State last year. He played really
well in that game.

Speaker 13 (01:30:12):
Yeah, Vincent Davis last year against NDSU had three carries
in that game for a total of negative one yard.
But did have five catches for twenty nine yards. So
it's gonna be gonna be a fun one. It'll be,
like I said, an entertaining brand of football. It's gonna
be a lot of fun in the Fargo Dome. One
other score, we were doing our Jiffy lue Bfargo scoreboard

(01:30:33):
that I forgot to mention. Indies used volleyball team picking
up a win today down at Omaha. So that's a
three to one win for the Bison volleyball team. Shout
out to Jennifer Lopez' squad. That's a good win for them.
And they'll be back home here this this upcoming week
as well. So we'll get into the end of the
show here, Luke, what are your what are your final

(01:30:53):
thoughts going away from Illinois State now and into well,
you know what, let's get final thoughts on the Illinois
State game today.

Speaker 14 (01:31:01):
Overall, solid game. The team came together throughout the game
and had to get over a little bit of adversity
coming spiraling Connor from that safety and then moving on
for the first half where Illinois State seemed to have
possession of the ball for the majority of it, but
coming back in second half. Watching the guy's rally together.
I think it was an overall solid win and a

(01:31:21):
good way to propel yourself back to the Fargo Dome
back home to play against Southern Illinois team.

Speaker 13 (01:31:27):
May have felt dicey at times, but you got a
three score win at the number six team in the
country and you'll take that all day long. So big
shout out to everybody here involved with the broadcast today
