First time to first time to Welcometo podcast joint host Hoho as he discusses
the rinting Netflix original series Black Mirror. Now Here he is for broadcasting from
(00:27):
the Cottage Studio Welcome to Black MirrorPodcast and as always, I'm your host.
So hi, y'all was doing.I hope you've done good. I
really do, because today we areon episode two of season six titled Locke
Henry. Oh. Yeah. Now, this one I was a definite fan
of. I really was for fora few different reasons. You know.
(00:50):
One, it was more of asuspense thriller kind of a thing, and
it had, you know, afew different filming styles in the you know,
I mean, you had the regularfilming style that you know, we've
come to love and appreciate with BlackMirror, and and we also had the
documentary film style, which which II do enjoy. I like a good
(01:15):
documentary. And then it slid intoa found footage type of a show.
And you know, I'm I'm afan of found footage things. I really
am. I like found footage filmsvery much, so, you know,
because you know, it's one ofthose things that you know, for an
(01:37):
indie film producer It's something that youcan do without spending a lot of money
on you know, gear, cameraequipment and whatnot. You know, I
mean you can do you know, with with a you know, a handful
of friends, a you know,a a thousand to twelve hundred dollars worth
(02:01):
of gear, you know, prosthetics, lateax, you know, dy homemade,
you know, fake blood, agreat idea, a really good writer
and and an amazing filmographer. Youcan do a really really good found footage
(02:21):
film. I mean, it doesn'tit's not going to break the bank,
and you can make quite a bitof money, you know, especially just
you know doing you know, streamingservices or what have you, or you
know, subscription based kind of thingusing Patreon or locals. I mean,
you can you can do a prettydecent job, make some money on that,
(02:42):
and you don't have to spend awhole heck a lot that That's one
thing I think that's really cool aboutdoing you know, found footage films.
You know, it's it's really intriguingto me. I like the aspect of
it. Maybe one day I'll domy own. I don't know, I
have no idea, you know,I mean, I do got some documentary
stuff that I'm wanting to do andhave some idea. Idea is that a
buddy of mine and I've been workingon for doing a found footage type of
(03:04):
a thing. But whether it'll actuallyever see the light of day, who
knows. But that's one of thereasons why I really did enjoy this film.
So this episode starts off with witha couple, you know, a
you know, a guy by thename of Davis in college and his a
(03:25):
friend that's in his same class filmography. I guess her name is Pia,
and you know that they are goingon a road trip to you know that
they're going to do a project fortheir film school. Okay, that's what
(03:46):
they're doing. They're in college, okay, And you know along the way
they stop off at Davis's mom's houseand we meet Janet for the first time,
and you know you in the opening. Oh yeah, and by the
way, before I go any further, and I'm sorry it took me this
long to get here, but spoileralert, we are going to be talking
(04:10):
about the episode. We we reallyare, man, spoiler alert. Y'all
know how this works. So,you know, we meet Janet Davis's mom,
and you know that there's some thingskind of immediately that we find out
and some things that give me pause. Not because it's it's more of a
(04:33):
suspense thriller type of an episode, there are certain things that you expect out
of them, and you know,a little bit less of a oh I
didn't see that coming, you know, because I mean, let's face it,
you know, whenever it comes tothe genre, you know, there's
certain things that we expect to happen, and we kind of we look at
(04:56):
it, and when things don't quitelook right, it's a little more noticeable
because it's such a well known typeof a genre. Certain rules that just
play. And I'm not just talkingabout the movie's scream, but there is.
I mean, there's a certain levelof expectation that comes along with it,
and this one was no different. So although in a matter of speaking,
(05:18):
there was a little bit fewer surprisesand it didn't take us as long
to figure out what was going on, there was still that oh, okay,
well, I knew something was up. I kind of had it figured
out, but they took it ina direction that I really wasn't expecting.
(05:38):
I don't know about you, butyou know, some of it was a
surprise. But others of it wasn'tso early off in that in that first
sequence where they're at the house andyou know, they we meet Janet Davis's
mom. You know, there's there'sa couple of things that we find out.
You know, we find out that, you know, Davis's dad is
(05:59):
no longer in the picture. Hewas a police officer that that died.
We don't know how just yet,but we know that he died. And
there was something that I noticed prettyearly off that gave me reason for pause,
like, oh, that's not right, okay. Whenever we go to
(06:24):
the shelf that has all of thoserecorded VHS tapes that just has the Burger
Ak word on it, you know, the the name of the miniseries that
that all of them were, andthere was like fifteen or so of these
VHS cassette tapes, and I'm like, oh, there's something off about that.
(06:47):
There's a story behind those or youknow better yet, those cassette tapes,
those VHS tapes has a story totell. Because I don't know about
you, but you know, whenyou're talking cassette, you know VHS cassette
tapes that you are recording yourself, you know, you never just put the
(07:10):
series name on it, and that'sit, especially whenever you're talking so many
stinking ones that just say the samething, Burger Act. There was something
wrong there, and I picked upon in the media. I know about
you, but I picked up onthat immedially. I'm like, there's something
off about that, you know, because you're going to have more information on
there, so you know what ison the tape. You know you're going
(07:31):
to have episode numbers, you're goingto have season numbers. There's just there's
things in there that you're going toput You're not just going to put the
name of the series and leave itat that. Especial whenever you have fifteen
VHS tapes or so I'm guessing onthe amount that I'll say the same thing.
(07:53):
There's something going on there, youknow. I picked up on that
right immediately, you know. Andof course we learn whenever they are outside
the door at Davis's mom house,you know it's it's there's there's that.
Oh okay, so they're doing adocumentary type of a thing. Okay,
And I got excited about that againbecause I like I like documentaries. I
(08:15):
like watching documentaries learning about things. You know, I very much of a
fan of the genre. I likelearning things. Documentaries to me are fascinating,
you know, it really is.It's fascinating. I'm like, oh
cool, okay, so I likewhere this is going. I'm liking this.
And then that night when they're upin the room and pe sees and
(08:37):
notices that camera, I'm like,oh, okay, now we're talking found
footage type of a thing. Allright, let's see if they actually play
into this. Let's see what seewhat happens. And then you know,
he uh. I don't remember ifit was that day, you know,
(09:00):
that that first day, or ifit was the second day that they were
there, But Davis takes Pia tothe lock and it's gorgeous out there.
I mean, it really is,you know. I mean, it's it's
the thing that landscape pictures come from, you know. And they talk about
that, you know, and oneof the other things that they talk about,
(09:22):
at least Pia talks about. It'slike, dude, this area is
gorgeous. This area is beautiful, you know, But why is there no
tourism? Why is there nothing goingon? You know? And it's like
you can tell by Davis's reaction tothis, that there's a story behind this,
(09:46):
and he is intimately aware of it. And you can just tell this
by his reaction to it. Youknow, it's just he's you can tell
that he's distraught about it, thatit affected him in his life personally.
You can tell this. It's like, okay, okay. And then,
and I'm pretty sure this was daytwo, you know, Davis takes Pia
(10:07):
over to the only bar this leftin town, I guess, you know,
there were originally three and now downto just one. And we come
to find out why the dark secretbehind this nice little town that should be
(10:31):
by all intents and purposes, justlike a hot spot for tourism. And
it's not what's the dirty little secret? Well, it's the story of and
I'm going to probably mispronounced this name, but Ian Adair, a serial killer
(10:54):
whom his father, Davis's father wasdirectly involved with taking down, with bringing
him to justice and finding the gruesomedungeon in the basement of his parents house,
which just so happened to also bewhere a triple well a double murder
(11:16):
suicide took place. And so,you know, p had decided that she
really wanted to do a documentary basedoff of that the serial killer in Adair,
you know that's She's like, dude, here's the house. You know,
(11:37):
let's tell this story. Let youknow, maybe we can you know,
bring some tourism back to this town. Maybe we can tell the story
of you know, your father andyou know how he was, you know,
the last victim of the serial killerthat whom you know shot his father.
(12:00):
Granted he didn't die of those wombs. He died from complications while being
at the hospital and getting sick anddie in that way. I mean,
it was a indirect death caused bythe serial killer. And it's like,
dude, let's tell the story.Let's get this out, let's do this.
You know, you know, wegot you know, we have a
really good idea here. Let's doit. And he's very like, I
(12:22):
don't want to do it. Youknow, he did not want to do
it whatsoever. You know, itjust it hits a little bit too close
to him, you know. Imean, it's a childhood scar that hasn't
quite healed with him, and notjust because of his own situation, but
with his mother because she had neverbeen the same since you know. So
(12:45):
he's like, no, I don'tyou know, I don't want to do
that. Well, she talks himinto it, but not just her,
because you know that night going tothe bar talking with Stewart, which is
Davis's friend, the son of theowner of the are, it's like,
oh, well, you know, let's you really should do that. You
really should do the documentary on thisserial killer. And who knows, maybe
(13:09):
doing this story can bring some tourismback to town and we can save the
town because you know that's where Stuart'syou know, that's that was his motivation
behind doing this. You know thatthey all have different motivations in this.
You know, Pia wants to tellan awesome story because you know, the
(13:30):
story they were originally going to dowas kind of blow, kind of bland.
You know, it really wasn't goingto go anywhere. It wasn't going
to give them you know what whatPia was wanting. You know that that
fifteen minutes of fame, if youwill, It wasn't going to go anywhere.
And she kind of knew that. You know, it was kind of
boring, boring, and it justwasn't going to go anywhere. But this
(13:52):
was something that really has that potentialif done right to really go somewhere,
you know, and she had thatvisionary aspect about it. She can see
it without seeing it yet you know, it's like, this is a good
story. We can do this. It'll be awesome and amazing. And Stuart,
you know, his motivation was simple. He wanted to bring tourism back
(14:13):
to the town. He wanted tosave the town and in essence save the
bar, save the business that hisdad had built. And so you know
Stuart's mom, who passed away fouryears before you know, the the the
(14:33):
goings ons of the episode. Youknow, she apparently followed the news on
this story with with Ian Adair, followed it okay, and had a bunch
of stuff, you know, newspaperclippings, you know, pictures, different
(14:56):
information of that nature. And youknow, it was around the same time
frame two that we find out thatyou know, Stewart's dad, the owner
of the bar, you know,he was he really was not keen on
what was going on. He didn'twant them doing this documentary. He really
didn't. Okay. Now, followinglogic on this, okay, there was
(15:24):
some things or at least I guessyou could say, following the normal trends
of the genre that we're talking abouthere, with a murder mystery, suspense,
thriller, found footage kind of athing. Okay, I automatically had
suspicions about what's going on. Okay, because of all those Burgerac tapes,
(15:56):
the TV series that the apparently Davis'sdad was really into and his mom as
well, was really really into those. To me, had a story to
tell. There was something off aboutall those cassette tapes sitting there and this
being roughly what fourteen years after thefact, because you know, he's Davis
(16:22):
is in college. Davis's dad diedwhenever he was I believe eight, and
so all this took place went downwhen Davis was, you know, seven
ish years old. So we're talkingto good fourteen fifteen years since the fact,
and with Stuart's dad, the ownerof the bar, with how he
(16:47):
was you know, destroyed, youknow, just defeated he was, he
was a drunk, and how hewas angry and upset about them doing this
documentary on this. My suspicion washe was involved. My suspicion was that
he was, you know, aco conspirator in this whole thing. That
(17:10):
Ian didn't act alone. And thatsomehow Janet was involved Davis's wife because of
all those cassettes being there. Shewas, in fact a fan of this
series, Burger acting, I'm like, she's got to be involved in this
somehow, because those tapes are verysuspicious to me. And what if Davis's
(17:36):
dad was collateral damage, you know, somebody that found out too much and
they had to deal with it,tie up loose ends, if you will.
(18:00):
And that's that's where my mind went. Okay, that's where my mind
went. I'm like, this isyou know, there's things going on.
This makes sense, that fits thepattern of the genre of what we would
normally expect with this. I wonderjust how right I really am. So
they're talking with somebody about their newdirection for the film, going from what
(18:26):
they were going to do to doingthis documentary and offering something new, something
that, you know, a partof the story that hasn't been told before,
something that they could offer the wentbeyond what is already known. Do
(18:48):
you have access to the house?Oh? Absolutely so the trio, you
know, Davis, Pia and Stuartthey break into the house Ian at There's
house and they go to the locationwhere they know the the dungeon of death
is in the basement of the house, and they go in there and you
(19:11):
know that their their their thought processwas, you know, this isn't going
to be all that bad. Weneed to make this look a lot worse
than what it really is. AndStewart, for some odd reason, kind
of knew how to make that happen, you know, by by putting lemon
juice on surfaces and it being blacklight reactive and it will look, you
(19:36):
know, pretty nice. So theyput some lemon juice down and then they
turned the lights out. They turnedthe black lights on, and oh,
holy crap, because they didn't needto use the lemon juice because that basement
(19:57):
under a black light lit up likea Christmas tree. There was that much
remnants of biological material down their bloodthat there was no need to doctor anything.
So they're in they're in the space, they're in the area where the
(20:18):
whole thing takes place, and it'slike, wow, you know, this
is kind of creepy. You know, this is kind of creepy. On
the way back home to Davis's mom'shouse, they get into an accident.
(20:45):
They're at the hospital. The onlyone really injured was Davis he was the
one that was driving. Stewart wasokay, Pea was okay. But you
know, Davis had a neck braceon and he was going to be staying
overnight for you know, observation. He had a concussion. So they were
like, we're going to keep youovernight for observation, make sure nothing's wrong.
(21:06):
And you know, no big deal, is just precaution. You're fine,
but you know, we want tokeep you under observation just in case.
And for some reason, and Idon't remember what that reason was,
but Stewart's dad was there, theowner of the bar, and you know
he's he's mean mugging or at leastpaying a lot of attention to Davis and
(21:32):
Stewart and Pia. And after Stuart, Pia and Janet leave, Davis is
all by himself and there's some cuttingback and forth going on because whenever Janet
(21:53):
gets Pia back to her house, you know she's going to be making the
shepherd's pie and nice dinner for them, and you know, Pia retreats to
the upstairs wherever where they were stayingat, you know, Davis's room,
and she's like, you know,I got some stuff that I need to
you know that I need to goover. I need to digitize some of
(22:15):
these cassette tapes. I need todo this, you know, and work
on this, so you know, let me know when when supper is ready,
and I'll be up here doing this. And she's going through and digitizing
the cassette tapes because you know, they use the same camera that her dad
had, or that that Davis's dadhave in order to do the documentary.
(22:37):
That's the camera they decide that they'regoing to use. And apparently they ran
out of VHS tapes and well theypopped in one of the Burger AC tapes
and recorded over it. Oh nobig deal. Mom will never know.
(23:00):
So she's digitizing this cassette tape andthen it cuts back over to and I
might have some of my you know, factoids in here, a little off.
But you know, we got twothings going on simultaneously. We got
Pia digitizing the VHS tapes, andwe have Davis alone at the hospital,
(23:25):
laying in the bed and he's perusingyou know, he's got a cell phone,
he's looking through social media, youknow. And Stuart's dad gets out
of the bed and walks over towhere Davis is he sits down on the
bed and he's like, I youneed to stop what you're doing. You
(23:49):
need to quit because there's something aboutian Adair that just never quite sat right
with me. And roughly at thattime, in the process of Pia digitizing
(24:15):
the VHS tape, the part thatthey record is done, and now you've
got the ending to you know, whatever episode was on that Burger Act tape
and I'm probably not pronouncing that righteither, it doesn't matter, you know.
And then next thing, you know, the end of the episode,
(24:36):
and now you've got a home recordingat the end of that, and who's
in the camera frame other than ianA Dare? What's he doing there?
This is Janet's VHS tape? What'sgoing on here? Oh? Holy crap,
(25:02):
there's there's Davis's dad. You meanhe was involved in this. And
then they talk about, you know, because you have the missing couple that
was there, you know, thestory that brought all of this to light
and start started the ball rolling onall of this. You see that couple
(25:27):
in the dungeon of death at ianAdair's house, and then the camera pans
over and then you have Janet comingin through the door. Davis's mom.
Oh, holy crap. This wasn'tjust one person whom was a serial killer.
(25:51):
This was a trio of them. And although I was right on my
assumption to a point with Davis's mombeing involved, I mean, of course,
you know, she's the one,you know who was a fan of
this TV series that there's like fifteenVHS tapes on there. But you know,
(26:14):
I was wrong in my assessment onStuart's dad's involvement and with Davis's dad
his involvement, because I was wrongon that. I didn't think he was
a co conspirator in this, youknow, I thought he was collateral damage.
I thought he was, you know, just a loose end that had
(26:34):
to be tied up. I thoughtthat Stewart's dad was involved, not that
he you know, he really hadsome deep, rude of suspicions that he
never could prove, and that's whyhe didn't want them to do this documentary.
I was wrong on that, youknow, I was. I was
definitely surprised on it. I reallywas, you know, I mean,
(26:56):
there was like not entirely surprised. You know, I'm used to the genre,
man, I'm used to some ofthe curveballs they liked to throw at
you. But they definitely went adirection that, although good, surprised me
a little bit. I was like, huh, this went a little bit
(27:18):
deeper than what I thought. Itdid a little different of a direction.
And then they went and surprised memore because well, now Pan knows the
truth. Pan knows that Davis's mom, or wait, hold on, I
(27:48):
misspoke. Pian now knows that ianA Dare didn't act alone, that both
davis mom and dad were directly involvedin this. So she now is terrified,
and rightfully so. And then wouldn'tyou have it? Janet walks through
(28:18):
the door, Hey, supper's readynow quickly. You know, Pia shuts
the computer screen down, shuts thatpuppy down there. You go, okay,
but she couldn't she Pia can't playpoker. Let's just put it that
way. She can't play poker. And I mean, come on, I
don't blame her. Would you beany different? You just found out something
(28:41):
that horrifying, you know, beingin a house all alone, basically nobody
to Janet. You know, shedidn't know. You know, Janet didn't
know Pia. You know, Daviswasn't there. It was a two of
them alone. She can do whatevershe wanted to to Pia, and nobody
(29:02):
would be the wiser. Oh,I don't know what happened she you know,
she just left, took her stuff, she's gone. I don't I
don't know. She got upset aboutsomething. I have no idea. And
why wouldn't they believe her? Youknow, Pia wasn't part of that town,
wasn't part of that community. Shewas a stranger to everybody. The
(29:23):
only only three people that knew herreally was Davis, Janet and Stewart,
the only people that really had contactwith her. Other than that. No,
she could come up with any storiesshe wanted to and get away scott
free. So Pia obviously is andand rightfully so she's terrified now she knows
(29:49):
that she is in danger. Youin danger, Molly, you endanger girl,
Like holy crap. And then theythrew the loop in there because Jane
(30:11):
is now suspicious because you know,Pia has a horrible poker face. Pia
ends up leaving, walking down theroad trying to get cell phone services she
can call Davis and tell him whatshe just found out. Janet is suspicious
of Pia's sudden change in her mood, character, demeanor, the whole nine
(30:36):
yards. She gets this, Oh, looking upstairs, I wonder what was
going on. She goes into Davis'sroom and at this point, the VHS,
the VCR just finishes rewinding the cassettetape that Pia was digitizing, and
(31:00):
it ejects the VHS tape and loand behold, she sees what has written
on the label Burger AC and Davis'smom knows full well what's on that tape
(31:23):
and knows that Pia knows she's gotto do something about it, hops into
the car, drives down the road. But pa is smart enough and she
gets away from her. Unfortunately,in the process of getting away from Janet,
she slips, she falls down, she you know, tragic accident,
(31:44):
and she dies. But Janet, not knowing Pia's demise, thinks that Pia
got away and knows now that thetruth will come out, and so she
goes back to the house. Shetakes every one of the Burger Ac vhs.
(32:09):
She stacks him all up. Shewrites on a note, along with
other memorabilia and trophies that she hadkept over the years, and for your
film mom, the only thing written, the only explanation given, and then
(32:40):
she hangs herself. Davis, ofcourse, now finds the truth, finds
out the truth. He is dead. Davis's dad was not the hero that
(33:00):
he had grown up thinking that hewas. His mom was not the woman
she or he thought she was.His whole life now is flipped upside down.
Holy crap, you know, aan ideal of who you are?
(33:29):
Your own identity is now it's beendestroyed. Everything you thought was true is
now nothing. And he feels nowas though his entire childhood, everything,
his very identity was based off ofa lie. Wow, he wins the
(33:54):
film award and all is right inthe world. Tour comes back to Locke.
Yeah, just an awesome, awesomeepisode in a awesome awesome episode.
(34:21):
So a few questions here, youknow, let's let's get right into this
portion of it. So how doyou feel about found foot and how do
you feel about Found Footage films? Are you a fan? You like him,
you don't like him? How manyof you seen? Which one is
your favorite? I'll tell you mineif you tell me yours. And honestly,
I'm I'm a huge fan of theHell House LLC series. There's three
(34:46):
of them right now. You takethe last twenty minutes out of the third
one, and you've got like theperfect found footage series right there. Loved
it, really did, But Igotta I gotta be honest with you,
though. I hear they're making apart four and I'm curious. Can't wait
to see that one. I hope, I hope I got I got the
(35:07):
right one. But I heard theywere doing a part four. I'm hoping
I got my my facts right onthat one, because I am definite fan
of the The Hell House LLLC seriesone, two, three, awesome,
awesome shows. So you're a fanof found footage? If so, what's
your favorite? I'm curious, now, what's your favorite? And do you
(35:30):
think that would be something you wouldlike to do? You know, not
not your own found footage, althoughyou know, hey, if you would
like to do that, let meknow on that one too, why not,
let's throw that one in there too, But as far as doing some
type of a documentary thing, becausethat that's the thing. Man, you
know, a camera is easy tocome by. I mean, come on,
you know your your cell phone takesgood pickers, amazing videos. I
(35:54):
mean it wouldn't take a whole heckof a lot to create some awesome kind.
And we all live in places. We all know things about our own
hometown or area that we live,or our own block or something. Every
town has an Elm Street, everytown has horror stories, has a history,
(36:15):
whether it be dark, whether itbe inspiring, whether it be whatever.
We all know people or have peoplein our families that have an amazing
story to tell. Would that besomething that you would like to do a
passion if you will, that youwould like to pursue. Let me know.
(36:38):
I'm I'm curious on that. Youknow, do you have a hero
in your family, a dark historymaybe that nobody would like the light to
be shined onto. I mean,I doubt you'll let me know on that
one, but hey, please doyou know? Let me let me know
in the comments, let me knowat Black Mirror podcast dot com. We're
(37:02):
sending an email, let me know. I'm curious, let me know in
the discussion board. When I finallyget season six, episode two put up
there. How would you feel ifeverything you thought about your childhood you're growing
(37:23):
up, you know a person inyour family that you know it had previously
been a hero, for the wholething to come crashing down and for you
to realize that everything was a lie. You know, has that ever happened
to you? How did you takeit? Is that something that you think
you would be able to handle verywell? I personally, I don't think
(37:45):
so. I don't think I wouldhandle something like that very well at all,
you know, just to shock, especially coming from somebody whom you know,
fresh well not even out of collegeyet. I mean, he's not

know Davis was just kind of justthere through the whole end of the show,
