S6E4 – I am not going to lie; this episode surprised me. I thought it was going to be a precautionary tale about being a celebrity and constantly being fallowed. I also thought it was going to be about the tole being a paparazzi takes on a person and how they will relentlessly go after a photo. And while all these are true, this episode takes an unexpected turn.

(00:11):
We Welcome to the podcast, joinhost Ho ho Is he discusses the riveting
Netflix original series Black Mirror. Nowhere he is broadcasting from the cat and
Studio. Welcome to Black Mirror Podcastand as always, I'm your host,

(00:33):
Ho Ho. So, how y'allwas doing. I hope you're doing good.
I really do. Today we're goingto be discussing see episode four of
season six titled Mazy Day. Ohyeah, I'll tell you what. I'm
not gonna lie. This episode. It surprised me a little bit, it

(00:54):
really did. It definitely surprised mea little bit. You see, I
thought this was going to be,you know, a precautionary tale about being
an actor and constantly being in thein the spotlight and having people following you
around like paparazzis, and you know, just how you've got to protect yourself

(01:15):
in a matter of speaking, youknow, you know, mentally and whatnot.
I also thought this was going tobe a precautionary tale about paparazzis,
you know, and the toll thatit takes on them doing some of the
things that they do in order toget that perfect shot. But that's not

(01:41):
exactly what we got with this episode. I mean, granted all those things
were true, you know, becausethe episode Oh oh yeah. By the
way, before I go any further, spoiler alert, we are going to
be talking about the episode. Soif you have not seen episode four of
season six Mazy Day, definitely headon over and check that out and then

(02:06):
come on back and listen to thisepisode. But let's assume that you have
already. So the episode begins witha gal by the name of Bo and
she is a paparazzi and she's sittingoutside of a of a hotel and she

(02:29):
starts taking pictures of the the malecouple that comes out, and one of
the uh, you know, oneof the people, one of the guys
comes over to her and you know, knocks on the window and is trying
to get you know, she hehe offers to buy the pictures from her,

(02:50):
you know, that's what that's whathe offers to do, and you
know, and and she's like,oh crap, you know, you know,
because he he approaches the vehicle wilesshe plugs it in, plugs the
memory card into her computer and ischecking out the photographs int of which case
it's like, dude, no,that's that's not how you're going to do
this. You know, it's kindof like Kenny Rogers, you know,

(03:12):
with the gambler, know whing tohold and knowing the fold and know whing
to walk away, know when torun. You never count your money when
you're sitting on the table. Andthat's what she did. You know,
she was sitting there at the placewhere she was taking the pictures, checking
out the pictures, making sure thatshe got the shot that she wanted,
instead of you know, watching, paying attention to what was going on.

(03:36):
So anyway, he was able toapproach her knocks on the window, offers
to buy the photographs for five hundreddollars, and you know, she takes
her keys out of her purse becausethey're not in the ignition. Another point
of why would you take your keysout if obviously you may need to take

(04:00):
you know, make a fast getawayor whatever. That seems kind of stupid
to me, But anyway, that'swhat she did. She you know,
she gets out of there and thenshe is selling the pictures to somebody and
you find out a little later thatthe guy whom she took the pictures of
the celebrity that she took the picturesof committed suicide, and so now she's

(04:24):
in crisis mode. You know, she didn't feel real good about that.
You know, it was definitely weighingheavy on her, and at that point,
it would be pretty easy to saythat she was questioning her her career
choice. You know. Now,this is somebody whom we kind of find

(04:46):
out through the story, through theepisode that she's been doing that for a
while. She has a lot ofcontacts. You know, this isn't the
it couldn't be her first time ofhaving something happen like this, but at
any rate, she's she's having anexistential crisis and she's in a situation where

(05:08):
she is, you know, thetypical paparazzi scene. You know, a
celebrity gets out of a vehicle goingup to wherever it is that they're going,
and they are surrounded by paparazzi andthey're taking the pictures, they're taking
the shots. You got flashes goingoff everywhere. I mean, this,
holy crap. And you have oneof the paparazzi that is, you know,

(05:28):
just taunting and just really being ajerk to this gal, to the
celebrity, whoever she is, andbo is watching this unfold you know,
and she doesn't like what she sees. She turns around, she walks away,

(05:50):
and she's done. She's she's outof the business. You know,
she's not doing it anymore. Andthen the scene goes to a celebrity in
a in the Czech Republic. Wefind out that she is an actress.

(06:17):
But she's in her hotel room andshe she takes a little recreational fungus.
She she she uh, she popsthe mushroom into her mouth, and she's
beginning to to trip, you know, she she's beginning to go down the
rabbit hole and she's going to findout you know, where you know,
the uh Matt hatter is and whatnot. But she's in her hotel room and

(06:42):
she's like, oh, I'm outof cigarettes. I'm not in a very
good headspace right now. And thisthis is after she you know, breaks
the glass and cuts her finger. But you know that's that's neither here nor
there. It doesn't really matter. But you know, she she's on her
way to go get cigarettes because shethinks the dry is a good idea when
you're taking some shrooms and you haven'tcome down off the high yet. And

(07:03):
so she's driving down the road. She goes into a tunnel. Next thing,
you know, bam, she shehits something. She hits something because
well she focuses on her finger andshe's not focusing on driving. Precautionary tale,

(07:24):
could be anyway. She is distraughtabout this. You know, she
does not take this very well. She finds out that you will. She
goes back to her to her apartmentor a hotel room wherever it is that

(07:46):
she's at. I think it's ahotel room. I'm assuming because she is
an actress in another country filming amovie. And you know, well it
cuts back to another point in theshow. You got both and he she
gets contacted by another paparazzi and it'slike, hey, you know this celebrity

(08:11):
maze day. She started acting veryerratic on set. She was very moody.
She was having mood swings and sheended up getting kicked off the set
because of something I don't remember what. At this point, at any rate,
she's been mia for quite some time. Nobody knows where she is.
She's not at home, she's notat her any usual places that she would

(08:35):
be. Nobody has any idea wherethey're at. People are offering like thirty
thousand dollars for a picture of hermore if she's messed up on drugs and
whatnot, makes her look even worse. She's like, I'm out of the
game, you know that, I'mnot not doing that anymore. You know.

(09:01):
She still has her contacts, butshe's not she's not a paparazzi anymore.
Well, she ends up doing alittle bit of research into it,
and she's like, wow, she'slike legit, like she fell off the
face of the earth. And she'sintrigued, and so she calls up some

(09:22):
people, you know, gets incontact with her contacts. She's like,
what, you know, what's goingon? What's all this about? She
she ends up tracking her down, you know, because she had read something
about her how she likes this particulartype of food or you know these particular
Yeah, this particular food from aparticular restaurant, and she ends up going

(09:43):
there to track her down, andthen come to find out, she figures
out where she's staying, and youhave her you know, Mazy Day now
is in you know, the theand we come to find out that it's
the home of a producer whatever doesn'tmatter, you know, and it's like
she's really having a rough time.I mean she's just emotionally just just done,

(10:11):
you know. I mean she isreally really doing she's she's not doing
too good. I mean, let'sjust put it that way. She's just
being simple. She ain't doing toogood, you know, and it's it's
understandable as to why. You know, she was in the Czech Republic.
She was on the job and shemade a mistake and it costs somebody their

(10:39):
life because somebody died. We cometo find out, you know, we
find that out during the episode.Somebody dies. She's not feeling you know,
she's feeling responsible, she's feeling guilty. She's not doing too good.
But as bo is sitting outside thisproducer's house trying to you know, get

(11:01):
the photo, trying to make surethat Mazie Day is there, you know,
the next morning after she gets there, that night, the uh oh,
the maid shows up to clean theapartment or the house, I guess,

(11:22):
and just the it's a wreck,you know, I mean it's a
wreck. She went on a rampage. It looks like, you know,
breaking all kinds of things, andit just it was bad. Somebody shows
up, Hey, I'm going totake care of you. We'll be all

(11:46):
right. I'm going to admit youinto a rehabilitation center. And that's where
they end up taking her to arehabilitation center. Bo follows her. They
get to a diner pretty close towhere the rehabilitation center is, and you

(12:09):
know they she was following way tooclose. You know that she is just
not used to following people, becausewell, needless to say, she got
spotted, which I thought was kindof ridiculous, because you know, they
give you the sense like this is, you know, some they're traveling some
distance to get to where it isthat they're going, and they almost make

(12:31):
it to their destination before you knowthe I guess it was the driver comes
out, walks over to Bow's vehiclesand puts a screwdriver through all four of
retires like you're not following us anyfurther. But it's like, dude,
I mean, come on, man, I mean, it's not like you
didn't know she was behind you.I mean she only had like, you

(12:52):
know, two or three cars followingdistance on a highway back road curvy thing.
It's like that you knew she wasthere. Why the heck didn't you
do this a long freaking time ago, you know, just just that's just
how I think whenever I'm watching stufflike this. I mean, I'm looking
at like that makes no sense, that's not what would actually end up happening.
Whatever. So anyway, she makesa phone call after she gets all

(13:18):
of her all of her wheels flattened, she calls up a friend. He
shows up. They take off tothe rehabilitation center because they find out whenever

(13:39):
they were at well, she findsout whenever she was at the diner that
some celebrity bought the whole just rentedthe whole entire place for the weekend,
send all the staff home, everythingelse. So it's it's it's just this
celebrity. Don't know who it is, but obviously it's a celebrity with some

(14:01):
money because this is kind of aritzy place that celebrities go to to,
you know, to clean up,to get off the drugs, to you
know, get get right. Sothey get to this rehabilitation center, some

(14:26):
other paparazzi show up because they puta tracking device on you know, the
h bo's friend that she calls to, you know, help her out.
And these guys are the quite essentialpaparazzi, you know, the ones that
will do anything, say anything. The the ones that just don't seem human,

(14:48):
you know, the ones that arejust I'm not going to say monsters,
but I mean it's just they're nothuman, you know. And so
they break into the place. Youknow, they get they get over the
wall, they get into the interior, they you know, go to a

(15:13):
somebody's dog is barking, but theyare, you know, they get into
the place, they you know, they get their marriage and they reach it
up through a fan, you know, an exhaust fan or whatever. You
know, I'm not even sure whatthe heck you'd call it. You know,
it's an exhaust fan, and youknow, they see that, oh

(15:37):
well, this might be her.I mean, this is where she's at,
obviously because she's the only one here. But holy crap, there's chains
around her neck. She's chained down. She's a captive and bo you know,
who's going through this existential crisis, whom whom is really rethinking her choices

(16:02):
and everything else, And she's Ineed the savor. So she breaks into
the room to go in there andget her. And the whole entire time,
you have, you know, thetwo people that ended up showing up
the two paparazzis that put the trackingdevice on you know Bo's friend. Well,

(16:22):
they're just taking pictures the entire timeshe's breaking into the room. Whenever
they go in, the whole entiretime, it's just flash after flash after
flash, Like, holy crap, people, you know, somebody's in needs
help. Bo was not allowing thisto happen. And she's trying to free

(16:45):
Macy day. She's trying to freeor trying to set her free, trying
to you know, help the situation, and you know, get her out
of there, get her out ofharm's way. Well that's when the episode
takes a turn. And holy cow, because Macy's like, you guys need

(17:08):
to go. You guys need toneed to get out of here. They
told me that I need to dothis by myself alone, you know,
nobody else around me. And youknow, in this excitement, I guess
you can say you see a goatpin and I'm like, what, why
is there a goat pen in herroom with her chained up? That makes

(17:32):
absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why isthere a goat pin in there with a
couple of goats? This is makingthis is crazy? Are you kidding me?
Holy cow? A goat pin.I'm like, what else are you
gonna throw in this room? Right? You know? I mean, what
kind of episode is this? I'mso confused. Something happens, macy Day

(18:04):
is in pain. Oh this isnot what I thought it was. Come
to find out, Macy Day isa werewolf and she starts to turn because

(18:25):
it's a full moon. Oh crap. Bo And the person that she had
called is like, uh, wegot to get out of here. We
gotta go now. Well, theother two, the the the paparazzi that

(18:48):
are that are taking pictures the entiretime. They they apparently had a false
sense of security because well, macyDay still has the chain and the uh
you know, she she still chainedup, she still bound. They apparently
had a false sense of security. It was definitely a false sense of security

(19:14):
because you know, the werewolf wasapparently she was hungry and apparently she figured
that paparazzi were food. Boe andher friend. Well, the two paparazzis
ended up, you know, dyingvery grisomely. And you know, they

(19:38):
never stopped taking the pictures to gettingthe shot, you know, they they
never stopped, you know, theyyou know, right, right, up
until it was like, oh,holy crap, we gotta go. And
then one guy was pulling on theother guys like we got to get out
of here now, you know. But by then, you know, hey,
it was too late because the werewolf got him. Bo and her

(20:03):
friend are able to escape to thediner. The were wolf shows up,
killing everybody, and it ends whereshe ends up getting the gun of the

(20:26):
police officer because well, you know, he was already attacked. The friend
that had showed up had already beenattacked, and then the werewolf does a
jumping leap toward Bo. Bo getsa lucky shot off and shoots the werewolf.

(21:00):
I guess it was a kill shot, I guess, but it didn't
kill her just yet, because thewerewolf turned back into Mazie Day and you
can still see the you know, the collar around her neck from where she

(21:22):
was chained up, and and MazieDay is just like, you know,
kill me, kill me, putme out of my misery, kill me.
Well, Bo does something that Iwasn't really shocked to see. You

(21:45):
know, maybe it was poetic,I guess, she can say. But
she hands Mazie the gun and it'slike, hey, you know, I
mean, no words come out,but it's a Hey, if you want
to die, you do it yourown self. I'm not doing it for
you. I'm not killing you.If you want to die, here's the
gun. You do it. I'mnot doing it. So Major grabs the

(22:08):
gun, she points it to herhead and is going to pull the trigger.
And this is where bo kind ofsurprises me because she picks up the
camera that her buddy You'd given herand she puts it up to her eye

(22:29):
to take the picture of the finalkill shot. Really, really that that's
what you're going to do. Imean I was like really, I mean,
don't get me wrong. Even withsome of the staff woos that.

(22:52):
It's like, dude, no,come on, that's that's just kind of
ridiculous. You know. The episodewas a it was a really good episode.
It was very well done. Itkept you in the dark about what
was going on until the last minute. I mean, they didn't hint at
anything, you know, they didn'treveal anything to let you know what was

(23:14):
going on. It was a verygood episode. I was I liked it.
I really did. I very muchlike it. So let's get on
with it. Let's go to thequestions all right, let's go to the
questions, because I got a few, I mean not many, but you
know I got a few. Doyou view this as a precautionary tale about

(23:42):
being a celebrity being constantly you know, have to constantly be on you know
what I mean, you know, never having that break from being in the
spotlight, never being able to beyou always having to wear some kind of
a mask and be on your bestbehavior, so to speak, you know,

(24:03):
in order to appease you know, the paparazzi and you know, the
everybody, the magazines, the thethe fluff piece writers and the fans that
follow it all having to appease everybody. I mean, do you view this
as a precautionary tale of being acelebrity? Do you view this as a

(24:33):
precautionary tale of being a paparazzi? And the toll that for a good person
with a conscience that you know, would never want that type of a that
type of a job. I mean, I mean if you had that being
a good, you know person notwanting to be intrusive, you know,

(25:00):
I mean, how would you beable to balance that between you know,
your personal and your professional you know, I mean how how could you even
compartmentalize something like that? I mean, would you be able to do that?
I mean, I don't, Idon't. I don't think I could.
I really don't think I could.I don't think i'd be able to
do that. I think it wouldtake a toll on me, and it

(25:22):
would just if I was able tostay in, and I think it would
change me. I don't think Iwould like the person I would change into,
you know. I mean, Ijust I m man, I wouldn't
be able to do that. Ireally just know. No, thank you,
no, thank you? Would yoube able to do that? Let

(25:47):
me know, because now I'm kindof curious, you know, And in
that type of sittion situation where Bohas her existential crisis, she finally figures

(26:10):
out what's going on with Mazie Day, would you pick up the camera and
take that that picture? Would youhave been able to do that? Because
no way I'd have been able toThere's no way I'd have been able to
take that shot. You know,I'd have turned around and walked out of

(26:36):
there, just hands down, noteven a question. There is no way
after everything that she had been through, after you know, even after getting
kind of drawn back into it.I mean, how hard did Bo work
to try to save Mazie just tofind out that maze is aware Wolf and

(27:00):
holy crap, I gotta run formy life. I mean it's like,
holy cow. You look at whatshe did and what she just went through,
and and still she reverts back tobeing a paparazzi. What the heck?
Yeah, I don't know. Whatdo you think? Did you like
the episode? Did? Did younot like the episode? Was a little

(27:22):
far fetched for you? You know, did did you? Did you like
it? I did it a reallygood job, you know, I liked
I liked the story. I likedthe special effects, you know, the
whole thing. I liked that theyyou know, they did it right.
There was a few things that theydefinitely got wrong, you know, I
didn't. I didn't like a fewaspects of it, but all in all,
it was a really good episode. What'd you think? Let me know
