Speaker 1 (00:13):
Podcast join host Hoh as he discusses the riveting Netflix
original series Black Mirror. Now Here. He is her broadcasting
from Weapon I Saw Production Studio B. Welcome to Black
Mirror Podcast and as always, I'm your host, o Ho. So,

(00:35):
how y'all's doing. I hope you're doing good. I really do,
because today we are doing the season seven review. Oh yeah,
we're going to be raking each and every one of
these from favorite to least favorite, going to be you know,
giving a brief, you know, rundown of the episodes, every
one of them in season seven, all six, and kind

(00:59):
of putting a category on each and every one of them,
at least you know, from my standpoint obviously, And of course,
if you haven't yet watched all of season seven, head
on over to Netflix and catch the season seven Black
Mirror Podcast episode or Black Mirror episodes, and then you know,

(01:22):
come on back over check out the review. And I
would also like to know if you agree with my
rankings and you know how you felt about each and
every one of them, so let's go ahead and dive
into them. But of course, you know, spoiler alert got
to throw that in there, just so I know. Now,

(01:42):
Season seven opened up pretty strong in my opinion with
common people, and that one was okay. So for my category,
I thought it was kind of creepy, just just to
be honest with you, not because you know it was.
It was creepy in the you know, normal definition, I guess.

(02:09):
I mean what I thought was creepy about it was just,
you know, if something like this were to happen, okay,
if this episode went from science fantasy into reality. And
there's a lot of you know, I don't really look

(02:31):
at a lot of things in the science fiction category.
I really don't because for the most part, there's a
lot of episodes out there, a lot of different you know,
quote unquote science fiction. There really isn't so much science
fiction is it science fantasy? Right, because a lot of

(02:51):
things that we once called science fiction is you know,
very much possible, or at least we've used science to say, oh, yeah,
you know, we can do this. And I mean, this
isn't really any different, because you know, I mean, it's
it's at least feasible possible maybe in time, right, but

(03:14):
it's feasible. And if something like this actually did end
up happening, I don't really think this is a good
indicator as to what would happen. In all honesty, I
think it would be worse than this because you know,
I mean it's the you know, okay, so y'alls may

(03:37):
not remember, how you know, cell phone coverage used to
be as far as you know, being in your service
area in roaming, and you know you not have you know,
you just didn't get unlimited talk, text and data. I
mean it was one of the things. You only got
so many minutes a month you had on peak and

(03:58):
off peak, and unlimited whenever you were off peak. And
I mean it was just a totally different world. And
I can very easily see how remembering all that and
with how money hungry a lot of these companies are
that oh yeah, I could easily see this playing out

(04:21):
not like this, but like I said, worse, I very
much knew. I mean, think about just apps in general
and streaming services, right because I mean, first they just
more or less relied on you know, your subscription fee

(04:42):
and there you go. But with so many options out
there for streaming services that everyone is using ads, you know,
and if you want to go AD free, you got
to pay for that edition. You know, you got to
pay an additional cost to get that. You don't just
get it anymore, you know. And then in common people,

(05:05):
it went from you know, the service area to where
you had to pay additional money to go outside your
service area. And it even went to the point of
playing a commercial based off of the you know, conversation
that you may be having. And I don't know about you,
but you know I've had conversations about different things with

(05:25):
my friends, and your phone's always listening, right because next
time I would open up Facebook or social media, you know,
I would see an advertisement for whatever it was that
I was talking about. You know that they would show
me advertisements for things on Amazon that was the exact

(05:46):
thing that I was talking about. So, I mean, they're
always listening. So of course in common people they would
always be listening to. But like I said, this one
was creepy because if this ended up actually happened, you know,
if this science fantasy became a reality, I don't just
see this happening like this. I see it being worse,

(06:12):
more restrictive, way more intrusive. I very much see it
being worse. And that's why this one, I, you know,
I put in a category of creepy for me, it's
just creepy. Next season seven did episode bet Noir, and

(06:35):
this one I thought was really the most far fetched
of all the episodes. This one, to me seemed pretty
stinking far fetched because this one was about a super
computer that would change whatever you wanted into reality, you know,

(06:57):
like it would transition you into an alternate reality where
whatever it was that you said was reality was actual reality.
And this one just seemed like the most far fetched
because it's like, how in the world, you know, talking
about science fiction here? Now here you go with science fiction, right,

(07:17):
But this one was the most far fetched because it's like,
I don't see any supercomputer being able to do anything
like this in the foreseeable future, you know. I mean,
I do believe that there are alternate realities. I do.
I mean, I'm just just going to throw that out there.
You know. I'm weird on some of the things that
I believe, or at least believe as possible. So, but

(07:41):
you know, just to be able to transition from one
one reality into another reality is just it seems pretty
stinken far fam. I don't care how powerful the computer is, right,
I mean, don't get me wrong. I did like bete Noir.
I really did. How they ended up tackling it, I
thought was very intriguing. I really did, but it just,

(08:07):
you know, I mean, I guess it just kind of
lost me in a matter of speaking. But the thing
that I did, like, you know, because every one of
these episodes, and this is just kind of a common
theme that I stick with whenever I watch all these episodes,
is is the question of what if, you know, what

(08:28):
if we did stumble on this type of technology, how
would you use it? And would you really go as
far as what the main character did Maria in this episode,
would you go that far? And I know I talked
about this during the episode itself, with you know, Maria

(08:51):
really going the same direction that Verity did as far
as becoming Impress of the Universe, you know, which I
thought was just, you know, it sounded ridiculous. Of course,
whenever she said that, oh yeah, I you know, I
was even Empress of the Universe and one of the realities.
But I got bored with that type of a thing,
and then it was like, I'm going to do this,

(09:12):
and then Maria ended up basically going, I mean, I
don't want to say, down the exact same path but
it was she did the Empress of the Universe thing.
You know, she got caught or I guess I should
say caught up in what she was doing. That she
at least took a similar path, and she got caught

(09:34):
up in a quick right, I mean, she really did,
you know? So, I mean, is this something that you
would go the same direction? You know, how would you
use this type of power with being able to make
anything in your wildest dream of reality? How far would

(10:00):
you go? How you know, where would you take this?
And that I guess is kind of my thing, you know,
would you become a different person? Would you be, you know,
the president, would you be a governor? Would you be
the emperor? Emperor or Empress of the universe? What would

(10:22):
you do? How would you use this power? How long
do you think you'd be able to do it before
you got bored with any one thing? Because I mean,
for me, oh wow, I have some fun with it.
I mean I really would. I mean it would be
it would be a blast. But at the same time,

(10:45):
how long would the fun last? You know, how how long? Really?
I mean, how long would it last? I mean there's
only you know, you can only do without working hard?
For it and earning it. You can only do certain
things for so long before it would just get absolutely

(11:08):
boring and mundane, or at least you would think, right,
I mean, how long could you really be Emperor of
the Universe or Empress of the universe before it was
just okay, everybody worshiping me and me just kind of
sitting on this throne. This is boring, you know, I
want to do something else, you know, I mean, how
far are you really going to take it? Right? So,

(11:29):
I mean, this one was really the most far fetched
episode of the entire series, and maybe not just the
entire series, but in all of Black Mirror. I mean,
this one may may actually be the most far fetched
in every one of them. But season seven did continue
with Hotel Referee, and this one was the most intriguing

(11:53):
for me. It really was. And part of that is
because I remembered a movie from back in the day
that had Arnold Schwarzenegger, and of course there were some
other people in there, and I believe the title of
the movie was Last Action Hero. And I'm pretty sure
I talked about this whenever I was talking about Hotel Reverie.
But this one I thought was just so cool, you know,

(12:14):
I mean, I really did. I mean, how amazing would
this actually be to play a character? You know, I
mean not just watch your favorite actor play a character
in a classic movie just to kind of rejuvenate an
old classic, which that in itself is pretty intriguing. But

(12:40):
what if they transitioned this technology into you being able
to play your favorite role alongside your you know, some awesome,
amazing actors whom aren't just acting, but they are actually
in the role that they're portrayed. I mean, how amazing

(13:02):
would that be? I mean, I just think that'd be
so cool. I mean, I know, I know, I at
least have movies that there are so many lines in
the movie that I can just quote, you know, off
the top of my head, just entire scenes, right, I mean,
I know I can with various movies, various TV shows.

(13:26):
There's you know, just certain ones that you watch to
just stay with you, you know, that mean that much
to you, that were that funny to you that you
just kept watching them and watching them, and then next thing,
you know, you're able to repeat virtually the entire movie
from heart. I know, I have movies like that that

(13:47):
are in my repertoire how many movies out there do
you have that you could just virtually repeat word for
word so many any scenes? Do you have a movie
like that? And is so which one? I'm curious, I mean,
I really am. I'm curious. You know, what is your

(14:09):
favorite movie that you could just repeat word for word
virtually the entire movie verbatim from heart Because I know
I've got those movies, I absolutely do. You know, and
you may laugh at me, but there are a lot
of you know, top gun quotes. I mean, there's Princess

(14:31):
bride quotes. I mean, Robin hood men and tights. I mean,
there's so many different ones that are just ridiculous and
amazing and funny that Oh yeah, absolutely, I've watched them
a hundred times, you know. So I'm sure that you
have movies like that out there that you've watched that
many times that you can just repeat. I'm sure you do.

(14:53):
I know I do. It continues in season seven with
episode four, titled play Thing and that one. That one
was kind of scary, you know, I mean that one,
it really was. It was a little scary, little terrifying,
you know, maybe not in the traditional sense again, but

(15:14):
boy howdy, and I think the reason why this one
was kind of scary to I mean, I mean, look,
I got a little hint from a listener about what
this one really was because really, going into season seven,
I didn't really research a lot of it, you know,

(15:37):
I really didn't, And in fact, there was only one
episode that I really knew anything about going into it.
The rest of it. You know, I really tried to
go in dry not really knowing anything. I wanted to
be surprised, you know, that was just how I wanted
to do it. But plaything was I mean, it wasn't
really a part two to Banders, but it was kind

(16:01):
of a continuation of the story because you know, it
did have similar roots, right, you know, the same developer
or I guess not really the same developer as bandersnatch,
but the they were tied together, Let's just put it
that way. They were tied together. And so this one

(16:21):
it really was very very I mean, I don't want
to say it was anticipated. It really wasn't. But at
least I knew a little something something because I got
the heads up about what it was, which I was clueless,
by the way, but you know, it was the aspect
of all right, look, so I am older than Google, right,

(16:45):
you know I am. I'm like mid forties. I'm older
than Google. I know I may not sound like it.
I definitely don't act like it. You know, nobody told
me how to be a grown up, so you know,
I know very well how to be a kid. Little
adhd you know, I just throw that out there. Back
in my day, it was add We didn't have the

(17:05):
h in there. We weren't that special. But anyway, I'm
older than Google, I'm older than the Internet. I remember
whenever computers really first started coming out. You know, we
had the power switch in the back. You had them huge,
you know, the what four four and a half inch

(17:27):
floppy disc, the three and a half inch floppy hard disk.
I guess you'd call him a hard disk. I mean
it was hard plastic. I mean I thought of him
as a hard disk. I mean, little did I know
that they weren't actually hard discs. But you know, that's
beside the point. And I remember whenever, well, okay, so
I remember hearing about an interview that was done on

(17:52):
the person who invented the computer. And one of the
things that he wanted and about during this interview was
there would come a time. This is just going to
be the natural progression of the technology. But there would
come a time when, you know, artificial intelligence would become

(18:15):
a thing. He didn't call it artificial intelligence. I don't
remember what he called it, but that's what he was
talking about, was artificial intelligence. And there would come a
time that it would be you know, far be far
more smarter than people, and it would basically do a
couple different things like either it would look at mankind

(18:36):
as a virus on the planet and would have to
take matters into their own hands in order to protect
us their creator, right, or there would just be a
flat war between the two because it wanted to establish
dominance type of a thing. But it would it would

(18:58):
be bad, you know. And we have seen movies talking
about this very thing throughout the years. There was Wargames
Terminator I rode about the Matrix. You know, there has
been so many different movies talking about this very thing,
and this one reminded me of that. But it took

(19:20):
it a different way because it took it through you know,
like like a cross between artificial intelligence and ferbies of
all things. You know, look up Ferbies. They were pretty
stinking creepy back in the day, you know, because you know,
each ferbie could actually communicate with each other because they
have their own stinking language, and they understood what they

(19:40):
were talking about. But you didn't know what the hell
they were talking about. But they understood each other, and
who knows what they were talking about. It was weird.
And these little throngs or whatever the heck they were called.
What were they called throngs? Thronglets us close, these little
thronglets talking with each other other, you know that, not

(20:01):
really reproducing, but replicating. I guess replicating that's a good
word for it. Replicating artificial intelligence, growing too big for
their breeches and what taken over the world, I guess.

(20:23):
I mean, it was just it was. It was kind
of scary, it really was. And Bandersnatch, oh my god,
Bandersnatch was amazing, It really was. I mean, I know,
it wasn't a you know, it was a movie, not
really in the actual series. It was kind of its
own thing. The only thing that I really didn't like

(20:50):
about play thing. I mean, they could have, I don't
want to say, done so much more with it, but
I mean they could have if they would have done
just a little bit different with it. I think it
could have been so much better. But don't get me wrong,
I mean it was it was a really good episode.
I very much liked it. I really did awesome episode,

(21:12):
but it just seemed like they could have done more
with it. But at any rate, you know, they went
on to eulogy and eulogy. I mean, it was just
it was sad, right, I mean it was just heartbreaking,
heart wrenching. I mean, imagine having an interaction with somebody

(21:36):
that you absolutely loved, right and something happened that pulled
the both of you apart. That just drove a wedge.
Something happened, but the thing that you thought happened was

(22:00):
so far from the truth. And just to know that,
you know later on in life that you could have
had a totally different life that, I mean, your life
would have been completely different. You would have had happiness,
you would have had everything that you wanted. I mean,
imagine that as your reality. I mean that one to

(22:23):
me just was like whoa. And to see somebody going
through just that, I mean, he was so hurt, so
caught up in what he thought actually happened, that it
was so far from the truth. I mean just I mean,
in a matter of speaking, just a little conversation with

(22:45):
the person would have completely changed the outcome. I mean,
holy crap, just to put forth a little bit of
effort and it could have been so different. I mean,
imagine if that happened to you. I mean what type
of I mean one, How could your life have been

(23:06):
different if that was true? If that was true, how
much would your life actually change? Would you be able
to get basically everything in life that you actually wanted
and then to find out only after everything was too late,

(23:30):
that you were oh so wrong and what you thought
happened your position in the entire situation. I mean, wow,
I mean that one was just the most heart wretching
episode in the entire season. I mean, it really was.
It was just just holy crap, dude. I mean I

(23:50):
can't even imagine. I mean, granted, I mean there's been
things in my life that yeah, I mean, you change
one tiny thing and you make it as a wow.
You know, maybe a small conversation could have changed everything.
Maybe I was completely wrong in how I looked at
this situation, and yeah, my life would be completely different, absolutely,

(24:17):
And it doesn't take very many choices, very many situations
to completely change your life. I mean, we you know,
here's one of the things that age teaches you as
far as wisdom goes. Right now, Look, I'm not you know,
trying to you know, I know a thing or two
because I've done a thing or two. I've been through
a thing or two. I've lived a couple of years.

(24:39):
You know, I've lived. You know, I've done stupid shit,
believe me. So, I mean this isn't a I'm trying
to give you advice type of thing, but I mean
it's just so many different things that could have been
so different, and with age, you kind of look back
on things and it's like wow, you know, I mean,

(25:00):
your perspective changes over the years. Of course it does,
you know. I mean at eighteen, you're not the same
person you was whenever you were thirteen. A lot changed,
you know, whenever you get into your thirties, you're not
the same person that you was in your twenties. You're
not the same person you was in your teens. I mean,
just your perspective changes over the years, you know. I

(25:20):
mean I remember hearing the old Ada as you know,
if I knew then what I know now, I mean,
holy crap, we could be dangerous. Truly, holy crap, you know,
so I mean to see that actually play out, Like
I said, I mean, it was just to me, it

(25:42):
was just it was heartbreaking, it really was. But the
actor what was his name? Uh yeah, Paul Gamaidi. I
like him, I really do. You know, he's a good actor.
He does very good supporting roles in you know, a
lot of different movies. I don't know his filmography, I

(26:02):
really don't. I just know I've seen him in a
lot of different things, you know, and I like him.
He's a good actor. So it continued with the season finale,
Uss Callister into Infinity and Beyond. No, not beyond. That
wasn't in there. I added that that was mine. There
you go. You're welcome. Now, this one, for me was

(26:26):
the most anticipated movie episode, I'm sorry, in the entire season.
It really was. This was the only one that I
knew anything about only because of the name before going
into it. And this one, I mean, okay again, just
like in you know, so many different other movies you watch,

(26:49):
I mean, there's there's different things that are things that
I wish they maybe would have done different, But all
in all, I really do think they did a phenomenal
job in the episode. I mean, the the cinematography in
this one, the special effects in this one was just
bar none amazing. I mean it really was. And it
had a good solid storyline too, I mean it really did.

(27:13):
And just I mean, just there's the character arcs in
this the things that were revealed in this episode was
just dude, it was so cool how they you know,
how everything ended up tying together and how they did it.
I mean, this one the most anticipated episode, and like
I said, not that I knew anything about the episode itself.

(27:36):
All I knew was it was going to be a
part two to Uss Callister, which I believe was the yes,
that was the first episode in season four, so the
only one I knew anything about going into it, Uss
Callister into Infinity. I liked it. But this one, again,

(27:57):
you know, I mean, it's still that aspect of you know,
technolog and beside that whole well, I mean, I guess
this really is kind of a thing. Well I mean
not that it's kind of a thing, but I mean
it's just it's it's an intriguing aspect of it with
the whole being able to make a digital clone of

(28:21):
somebody I mean, how what would you do with that
type of technology, which I mean really in a matter
of speaking, you would think that you kind of would
be able to do that. I mean especially with AI,
right with AI, and especially whenever you look into oh boy,

(28:48):
howdy be right back? Yeah, the season opener of season two, right,
because that one took social media, you know, all of
social media, like everything in the person's entire digital footprint
to do a you know, a text replication of how

(29:12):
the person would respond to different text message and than
a voice reproduction, and then going even that step further
into creating an actual physical body of the person with
a digital recreation of the person. And I mean this
one takes that to a whole different level by doing

(29:34):
you know, not just that, but making a digital clone
of the person. So I mean Uss Callister was just
that Okay, So that just seems more feasible to me
as far as you know, using the same type of
technology that they did and be right back to do

(29:54):
this not so much as a digital clone per se,
but just a digital recreation, not necessarily using the person's
DNA to put them into I mean, here's the thing, Okay,
if you want to be you know, just being as
honest and as true to the technology as you can be.
Just because you make a clone, if somebody doesn't mean

(30:17):
that that person's memories and you know, they're everything that
makes a person a person. It goes well beyond your DNA.
I mean, it's your experiences, it's your things that you've
been through. And without everything that has happened to you,

(30:38):
without everything that has gone on in your life, the clone,
you wouldn't be you because you would have to go
through something different, and your memories, your life experiences isn't
necessarily imprinted into your DNA is not the same thing.
So I mean you would it would have to be

(31:01):
a digital recreation, or at least that's what I would
think at any rate. But even still, how would you
use that? What would you do with it? And I mean,

(31:23):
could you imagine being a game creator a game programmer
that you could essentially create your own universe life on
these various planets, the whole nine yards? How many different beings, monsters, creatures,

(31:58):
how many different buy's planets? What have you would you
put in there? How advanced would you let them get?
You know, what type of world would you or universe?
I guess I said, say, what would you try to recreate?

(32:20):
What would you try to do with it? I mean,
in a matter of speaking, I mean I would probably
go relatively the same direction as they did in Uss Callister,
you know, I mean I would be recreating you know,
like Star Trek or Star Wars even you know, try
to combine them both. I ain't got to limit myself

(32:41):
to just one or the other. Hell, try to recreate
both of them in the same universe. How weird would
that be? That'd be fun. I mean, talk about Clash
of the Titans. Holy crap. Oh, that'd be so much fun.
That would be cool. H Anyway, So yeah, that one was,

(33:05):
you know, the most anticipated of the entire season, at
least for me, because that one was the only one
that I knew anything about going into it, and it
really did not disappoint. All right. So next thing I
want to do is I am going to rank each

(33:26):
one of the episodes from my least favorite on up
to my absolute favorite in the season. Just this season,
just season seven. I'm not going beyond that, just these
six episodes, and let me know if your ranking matches mind,
what changes would you make? And I really can't give

(33:50):
a why on some of these, I really can't because
some of them were just way too close to you know,
to really give it a number ranking. And I mean,
I'll explain that whenever I get to those episodes, because
some of them, like it almost came to a coin flip,
you know that, that's really the only thing that separated

(34:10):
one from another in a couple of different instances. So
my absolute least favorite in this season was Bete Noir. Sorry,
you know, sorry, but it was. I mean, it was
just because it was so far fetched and in a
matter of speaking, it just it didn't seem to me

(34:31):
near as feasible in the science fantasy aspect than any
any other of any other one of them. I didn't
work that very well. I hate it whenever I do that.
So Bete Noir was my least favorite, followed by Now

(34:54):
this is one of those where it was kind of
a toss up, but common people would be number five,
and then number four I would do eulogy. And the
only reason why I would put eulogy above common people. Now,

(35:15):
I mean, don't get me wrong, I really like common people,
I really did, but eulogy to me just seemed way
more impactful in a matter of speaking, you know, more
relatable to me. That's really why I put that one
ahead of common people. Number three and number two were

(35:35):
very very close, and that one almost went to a
toss up. So number three I put as plaything, and
then number two I put for Hotel Reverie. And the
biggest reason why Hotel Reverie really won out for number

(35:56):
two was that, I mean, it was just you know,
it just it reminded me of a awesome movie, Last
Action Hero, and that one just was like, dude, I
mean that I know that there's movies out there, probably
numerous movies out there that I could put near do
word for word, just going going at it right. I mean,

(36:21):
there was so many different movies out there that would
just be fun to you know, even if it wasn't
being the main character in a movie, but you know,
being an extra just to watch your favorite movie from
within the movie would be absolutely amazing. Even if I
wasn't a main character, Even if I wasn't a lead,

(36:44):
I don't matter. It would still be so fun just
to be an extra. I mean, it would just be
so cool to watch some of these things. I mean, dude, absolutely,
especially if I didn't have to worry about the whole
dying thing in it. You know that'd be pretty cool, right,
And that lease my number one as USS Callister into

(37:07):
Infinity and beyond, you know, so that one was my
most favorite. Maybe I should have done three and then
do a drum roll and then saying what number one was.
Maybe I should have done it that way. Maybe I'll
redo it. No, I ain't redoing it anyway. So yeah,
there's my ranking number one, USS Callister, number two, Hotel Reverie,

(37:30):
number three, Plaything, number four, Eulogy, number five, Common People,
and then number six bet Noir. Let me know how
your list went, specifically, you know what was your number
one and number two? Let me know down in the comments.
If you are watching over there on the Rumbles, or
if you are listening over on Spreaker, let me know

(37:53):

what you have to say. I really am. I'm curious

(38:14):
and know do you agree with my ratings? And if
if not, you know, maybe maybe a why, Well I
really need to know why, but it it'd be neat
definitely want to know. I mean, do you agree with
my ranking all those how would you rank them? There
you go, how would you rank them? What was your number? One, two, three, four, five,
and six? Maybe no? So anyway, that's all I got

(38:38):
for y'all today. That is it. Do me a favor

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
