Speaker 1 (00:15):
The Blue Beetles.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Weeping down from the Youngers slash Gangland, comes a friend
of the unfortunate.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Enemy of criminals, the mysterious, all powerful character a problem
to the police or a crusade of a law In reality,
Dan Garrett a rookie patrolman, loved by everyone but suspected
by none of being the Blue Beetle. As the Blue People,
he hides behind a strange mask and a sup of
interrigable blue shade armor, flexible ourselves but stronger than still.
(01:09):
Today's episode of The Blue Beetles is entitled Mashing the
Arson Rings. Numerous fires of suspicious nature have stirred the
civil authorities to a point where a concerted drive is
under way to discover who and what is back of
this unprecedented wave of mysterious conflagrations. As the city's fire
inspection department become obsolete. Is the increase of destructive fires
(01:33):
and abandoned factories and all law tenements due to coincidence?
Or is an organized campaign of wholesale arson being engineered
by a mastermind. As our story opens, the Troman Dan Garrett,
who in secret is really the Blue Beetle, discusses the
situation with his friend and confident doctor Franz. The Chemist
and Denny don't really believe that there's a ring of
(01:56):
professional arsonist woods setting these plans.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I am positive.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
You know, we've had a long dry spell. There's such
a thing as spontaneous combustion. I know that. Then on
what do you base your suspicions?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
The fact that in each case the burned building had
been vacant for a long time, or had been operating
on a.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Losing basis, and was heavily insured. Not those old tenements
on River Street. But surely the owners would be taking
a terrible risk of discovery if they set them on fire.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Not if I hired professional arsonists. They're pretty clever, you know, yes, But.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Look at the property loss and in some cases loss
of life. The property losses in each case I've.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Found are all covered by fire insurance. A loss of
life such as in that last tenement, fires and other
things that's equivalent to wholesale murder.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
You're right, Danny, and if someone deliberately set those fires,
that person should pay the extreme.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Penalty they will if I can get the evidence I.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Need to convict them of. What do you intend doing?
I'm asking the Chief to put me on special duty
to investigate these mysterious fires with Officer Mannigan.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yes, if Mike wants to work on them with me,
he will, all right.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
He likes excitement as much as you do.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
I know I can't stand in activity as long as
there are criminals to run down. I'll only be happy
when I'm on their trail.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
And I do hope you'll always be as successful in
the future as you have been in the past.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I've got a fire engines that's my exit.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Cue along that now, I'm Dan Garrett's a smoke here.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Oh man, God, more wild than the apartment house. But
the challenge your back on the top.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Guy.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
He's a hard guy, these houses, aren't.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
We're the part of the boat him up.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Because as a girl up as that's not fall window.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
He's gonna count here he killed if you don't, John,
But there's a cop warning or not to jump.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah. Now we're going right into the buildings. Yeah, and
there's another comp fly right after him.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
But they'll be playing to a crystal let inferno.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Boy.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Look at the flames pouring out of that window underneath.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, it's like counting for them babies, I guess.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Look the fireman just got a hose up that ladder.
They're pouring a stream of water into the windows. Too
late up man, Yeah, that's the end of the cops
and the girls. Yeah, gee, what a crack.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Look look up there on the roof. Yeah, it's the
two cops.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
And the girl.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
What do you know about that? They went up and
set it down just in time too. While I'm gonna
landing a ladder over to them from the hook and
ladder truck where but it will reach it's too short.
Oh why don't they jump across to the next room.
It's too far, honey, pot camp, it never made it.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
The fireman's stretch your nets or if they can't get
hearing up to their.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Buildings, that fire is too high. See you four out
of those lower windows.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I'm just that tack. No, no, no, look.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, one cup's hanging to the edge of the roof
by his hands.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Now the other one's crowing over him.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
But when they drying the dude that's taking cops hanging
from the face top's feet stuff. He can almost break
the ladder up. There's a fireman growing up the ladder.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Say.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
The girl's climbing down over the two cups hanging there.
Look out, see she almost lost hole.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
The fireman's gotta see, says, he says.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
He's say yeah, but say, looks like he sainted time.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Two cups gonna get down? I don't know. They're still
hanging up past my not back in.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
The hooking ladder truck a bed now out. The end
of the ladder is white under.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Him, don't you there? He goes, he dropped.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
He made it. Now there's only the top hanging into
the roof.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
He can't make it?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Who is?
Speaker 1 (06:07):
He looks like patrolman Dan Garrett.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
The other cup was manning in his town. And I've
cowered all right?
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah, but how's he gonna get out of listed him?
He look the fire is looking up to him. Now
he's trying to climb back onto the room.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Very close. He made it.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
How is he gonna get down from that?
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Which means or I would like to be in his place?
Say he's fit, the feary ain't here?
Speaker 2 (06:34):
He is, he's got a long pool.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
What's he gonna do? Hold warn across for the other room, gosha.
I hope he leaks it very good?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Oh boy, he.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Ought to get our medals for this day's work. M
hell Danny, I understand you distinguished yourself at the fire today.
(07:08):
I almost extinguished myself with all I could do to
hold on when Mannigan and the girl were both hanging
on to me.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
He's no lightweight, and I'm.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Proud of you, my boy.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
That took the nerve. You got to have nerve to
make good on the police force.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
And I know, but you've covered yourself with glory. The
important thing is I got some valuable information, Kah, from
whom the girl I rescued, Elsey Williams.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yes, I talked to her at the drug store where
the fireman took her when she fighted.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
She worked for Gordon, sort of a secretary and rent collector.
Is that how she came to be in that building
when the fire started?
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yes, she was collecting rents. She told me she saw
one armed man leave the cellar entrance in.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
A hurry as she entered the building. Oh, what's suspicious
about that? He might have been a friend of the janitor.
Miss Williams told me that she'd seen him in a
huddle with her employer early this morning before the fire,
But that still doesn't prove anything.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Weight.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
As he left, she heard him. Say to Gordon, don't worry.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Your troubles will soon be over.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
We won't miss.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
As Gordon been having trouble some sort, Yes, financial troubles,
been losing money on his houses.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
He also has a lost building. It's been empty for months.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
That's literally looks suspicious.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yes, and I figure my trail begins with mister Gordon.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
What are you going to do?
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Call upon mister Gordon and make him talk.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
As the carman down, Dolf do you I won't see
you one.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
I'm busy, so important to do.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Oh well, i'll see him the calmann John guard did
you go? Oh coming officer, Oh that's on your mind?
Very busy this afternoon, fire.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
This morning, and everything very upsetting. Every financial loss to
you or to the insurance company.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
What's that?
Speaker 2 (09:01):
I asked you to whom the fire.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Was a heavy financial loss? So you are the insurance company.
Oh okay, just because you're right that uniform, don't think
that you can be impertan into the taxpass.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
I'll report you just.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
A minute, mister Gordon, I'm here on official business. Your
buildings were heavily insured.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
You stand the gain rather than lose by this fire.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Today, the fire chief reports evidence of incendiorism.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
What do you mean?
Speaker 3 (09:24):
How can report such a thing.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
I have, mister Gordon. I'm here to help you if
I can.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
You tell me who the ringleaders are and miss Arston Rackett,
and I'll do what I can to get you off
lightly when your case comes up in court. Court? Who
said anything about court?
Speaker 2 (09:41):
I did?
Speaker 1 (09:42):
I'm going to be arrested shortly on suspicion of being
party to a conspiracy to defraud the fire insurance company.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
No, no, you can't do now.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Now, now, why don't you break down? Give me the
information I'm after.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
What do you want to know?
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Who is the one armed man who is seen to
leave the building just before the fire? One armed man fire?
Speaker 3 (10:03):
I don't know anywhere?
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Who had a confidential talk with you earlier this morning,
my secretary, or in knowing your secretary into this? After all,
she almost lost her life to day collecting rents for you?
Speaker 4 (10:15):
All right, I'll tell you.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
His name is Joe Duranda.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
It's called Stumpy. He worked for the Modern Wrecking and
Construction Company. They wrecked buildings and construct buildings that you're
coming and going.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
What a profitable business, I'd say.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Oh listen, I didn't want to do this thing. They
threatened to undermine my tenements, so they'd collapsed. I didn't
hire them to burn them down. The buildings collapsed, I'd
get no insurance at all, But did be a total loss?
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Oh that's their racket. What did they get out of it?
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Thousand dollars down and twenty percent of the insurance?
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Mm not sad. And I suppose they get the job
of rebuilding hairs huts part of the contract. Who's the
head of the company.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Somebody always spoke of his boss as.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Uh the skipper.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Something must have been in the navy at one time.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
I don't know that. What does the gang use that
makes the fire spread so quickly?
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Cathleen, No nothing. Will you go down with me to
the DA and tell him what you just told me?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Now, look here, officer, my life isn't worth a dime
ride Now for talking, we don't worry.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
The DA will have you guarded day and night.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
What was that one that sounded like my secretary's boy?
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Hold on, let's see you going in there?
Speaker 3 (11:31):
God hear not those men they're carrying along.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
You're right, hey, don't count count taper. I'll fix you
for sticking your nose.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
You know what, don't consent.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
You come on good and take a walk with me.
Oh kind I've got this gun in your back, so
don't open your trap. You and me's gone for a
little ride. This skipper wants to see you later that evening,
(12:04):
I up in one of the city's skyscrapers.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Stumpy is reporting to his skipper.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
You see, it was like this, skippers. I seen the
cuppa go into Gordon's office, and I figured maybe Gordon's
secretary a spill of beans to Garrett after he rescued it.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
So I called some of the boys, of course, and
when the copper stayed in with Gordon so long, well,
I figured the heat was being tained on. So I
decided to pick up Gordon as well as a girl.
You took a terrible risk by kidnapping them and broad daylight.
Well what else could I do, Skipper?
Speaker 3 (12:34):
The heat was on?
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Where are they all?
Speaker 1 (12:36):
I got him tied up in one of your budgets
down at the end of the River Street.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
You bring him out to my yard about midnight. We'll
see how much they've.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
Spilled to the police. Okay, skipper, and keep away from
waterfront saloons. If you get drunk tonight, you're all through? Sure, Sure, Skipper,
you can trust me. I won't take not even one drink.
You better not if you know what's good for you.
I've got a couple of jobs for you tomorrow, and
I want you sober. And you can trust me, Skipper.
I ain't a where my bread and burda comes from,
all right? Remember that if you want to be able
(13:04):
to continue eating bread and butter. What will happen to
Elsie Williams and the brave little Secretary?
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Will Garden be bumped off for talking?
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Can Dan Garrett recover from the blow on my head
in time to catch the thugs?
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Or will he lose the trail completely?
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Meanwhile, at doctor Franz's little apothecary shop, the Troman, Dan
Garrett is talking with Doctor Franz while donning his blue
beetle chain armor in.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Math, Doc, I've got a hunch.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
There's that sailor costume you brought along. Something to do
with your hunch. Yes, I'm gonna put it on over
my blue beetle costume. And what's the idea? Well, I'm
convinced that the Arson trail leads down at the waterfront.
M that's an interesting thought. A fire trail leading to water, yes,
but nevertheless that's the way.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I see it.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
But what you see the idea that clear leads in
that direction. Stumpy's reference to his boss a skipper, which
may mean that Stumpy's been a sailor, or that the
head of the Arson ring may have headquarters on a
ship of some kind. I see. Also, I learned from
Gordon today that napther's being used to saturate the buildings
before setting them afire. Napther is used extensively around ships
(14:54):
to remove grease and paint and rust. For what you
going to do? Disguise myself as a sailor and see
if I can pick up Stumpy's trail in one of
the waterfront cafes. That will be dangerous, Denny, and I
love danger duck, and it's in the line of duty,
a part of my crusade against crime. Well you better it.
Me change your face at it. There's some makeup. I'd
act a little tipsy if I were you, It would
(15:15):
be more convincing.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
That's a great idea.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
I'll hide my blue beetle mask until I go into
action as the Blue beetle. And when I do, some
people are going to get a pick surprise.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
As the matter tailor lost a twatt.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
I'm looking for my friend Stumpy blossom pal Stumpy.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
You know Stumpy?
Speaker 4 (15:53):
Sure, I know Stumpy. Gotta fine stumpages.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
What do you want with him?
Speaker 2 (15:57):
He's gotta give me a job.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
He's my pounds said, if I ever wanted a job ashore,
he'd steer me into or a good job.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Oh, I ain't seen him.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
Maybe you could find him down at the end of
River Street, in the River Street or something doing down there.
Sometimes he sleeps on one of the modern recon and
construction companies barge.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Well promised me a job. He did.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
I'll go find him and buy him a drink or
spy Stumpy.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Oh good, this is maybe. Look there's a guy.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Coming down there looking for Stumpy. Yeah, he said, he's
a power of Stumpy attending.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
These front But he ain't.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
He's cold, sober and he ain't snow power Stumpy.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Okay, goodbye.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Amber rough light and see can't find my pan Stumpy.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
You know Stumpy one arm Stumpy grunt.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
I'm sure I know him.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
He's down on the barge there.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Come on, bell let me see you are.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
That's very kind of you made.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Why don't mention it? I am a seafar and may
and mooselle a seat fair and.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Men gotta stick together. Stumpy is a seat Farnell.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
Watch your step matey. Yeah, he's the bodge Stumpy. He'll
be glad to see an old friend, Stumpy if you
will find him right down there.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
And he ain't down there now you.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Can talk to the rats until he comes. Yeah, what
are you doing? I just knocked an old family or
into the hole of this scale. Who is he? I
don't know the mazy phone he was asking for you
when playing drunk up at the cafe.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Yeah, probably a dick.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Yeah, what are you doing with him?
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Put the hatch cover on and pile some bags of
sand on it, and I'll go up the phone and
skipper at the office.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
It's okay.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
I'll take care of it.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
And if they're saying the hole gets noisy, open up
the hatch and fill the hole with sand and I'll
keep him quiet for a long time.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
What will happen to the blue people now?
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Can he escape from the racking fested tomb or will
he be smothered to death by sand.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
In the meantime, several telephones are busy.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Yes, mister mayor, Yes, yes, you're right, something should be
done about these costly fires. Whan Yes, yes, sir, yes,
need of be glad to serve on the Citizens Committee.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
Thanks, anything but the good of the city.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Oh, by the way, mister Mayor, I'd like to have
you and your wife spend.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
The weekend on my heart some die.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Oh no, not at all, not at all that it'll
be a pleasure. Yes, it's alright, Well.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Just let me know where.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Goodbye jumpy On the other songs y hello, yes, huh mm,
that sounds suspicious. It maybe that the throeman Dan Garrett
playing detective what Yeah, it's a good idea something. Tell
us to open up the sand elevator and fill the hole. Yes,

at the yacht in a half hour. Bring Gordon and
the girl. We find out the same, squealed, you'll.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Know what to do.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Good Bye, Hello doctor, friends speaking Hello doc, can you

Speaker 1 (20:24):
But where are you in the hold.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Of a sand barge at the foot of river streets.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Are you in danger? Not yet with what happened. Someone
knocked me into the hold and now they're.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Filling the bridge with sand.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
But Henry, you'll be very deling.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
I'll look back.
Speaker 1 (20:39):

Speaker 4 (20:45):
I'm in the bridge, hied up to the pier. Hurry back, hurry.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Where are you taking it out to the skipper's yacht?
Who's the skipper?
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Don't you wish you.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Knew and could tell somebody?
Speaker 5 (21:12):
I know who you are and what you do.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
Yeah, but it ain't gonna do you no good. You'll
never tell what are you moving? This skipper ain't taking
no chances on you or your boss at squealing heiny garden,
You awake? Oh eh, he's awake.

Say it did squeal? That's who the guy was that
Gus knocked into the hole of the sandbarge. Well, he'll
never tell nobody nothing. He's buried alive by this time.
All that must be the skipper now on his way
out to the yacht. We're both thinking about the same yay,
or maybe it's summer. Hide the counter.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
I'll slap you overboard. I should have left the gag
in your mouth.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
That's what a guy gets for being saw counted.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Okay, skipper sir, are you coming? Yeah, he's got your fire.
Follow it of be off.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Okay, just be yill and I'm gonna get you up again.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
Aunt.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
I regret very much Miss Williams and mister Gordon that
you saw fit to express yourselves to their poverties to
the extent you have. In my business, long tongues means
short lives. What are you going to do with it?
Speaker 5 (22:37):
My lawyers?
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Your lawyers will assist in settling your estate, mister Gordon.
Only your heirs will benefit by your long tongue.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
No, no, you can't mean that.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
That was my meaning. Very quickly, mister Gordon, we're all
going for a little sea boys, if you and Miss
Williams aren't coming back. Yes, the flu people, your prop
that gun thumpy you might injure the young lady. Why
it won't save you. Your record is smashed. Your folke
(23:09):
of respectability will no longer shield you.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Listen, you guys, not goey. Don't let this guy bluff you.
Any of you I'll blast you with my ray guy poast.
I'm gonna take me alive.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
Now I'll dive by water with timby Daddy, how did
(23:44):
you escape from the hold of that sand bar? I
discovered one of the hatches wasn't tight, so was the
hole filled with sand. I climbed up in the sand,
