Speaker 1 (00:12):
Hey, I'm Sydney and I'm Delainey, and this is book cool.
Today we're talking about a book I never had to
read in school, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
I did have to read it, I don't remember when.
But to celebrate teens being really into their hair, I'm
drinking the ever classic Strawberry Crystal Light.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Gosh, I'm drinking the base of that drink, which is
just water.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Wow. Oh my god. Icon behavior.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Need better. Okay, but before we start, I do want
to read. So as you know, there's this picture, yes
book of a French bulldog mix perhaps, but it looks
like with the I didn't tell you about the back.
The note says this is April second, twenty sixteen. It

(01:02):
says Buster modeling his new scarf. Doesn't he look handsome?
Thanks Ashley. It's like going out. It's a banana, not
a scarf, but that's okay whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Close enough, Buster does look amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
And if you have this, if you're looking for your
picture and you left a picture of your dog Buster
and book a copy of The Outsiders, hit me up.
I will give it back to you because it's a
cute picture.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
But I us another picture of Buster to confirm and
we will send you.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
You got it? Yes, because I mean, what a guy?
He doesn't know?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
How fun?

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, that's the best thing I found in a book.
Better than that Starbucks receipt from the year two thousand
or whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I don't know, Sydney, You're never gonna beat my Uh,
I can't. I can only think of the word coll
an ectomy and that is not the word. With anoscopy
report and pictures that I found. How did that end
up in a book? Why would you put that in
a book?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
You'll need bookmarks.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, whatever, I have pictures of that man's butthole, well
inside of it, I guess.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Anyways, here's some fun facts that aren't cool and oscary related.
So Sie is a woman, I know, crazy what. She
wrote this book when she was sixteen ye in nineteen
sixty five, got it published two years later, So eighteen
published author. It's based on two gangs in her school.

(02:32):
She's from Oklahoma, so I'm like, okay. Sure she was
told by her publisher to use her initials and not
like her real last name, which was like Susie Eloise.
I think something along those lines because they didn't want
to alienate male readers. Was it like male reviewers, Like
you're gonna get bad reviews from guys if you are

(02:54):
a woman.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
So I'm like, yeah, in the fifteen sixties, definitely.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
I mean that's why JK. Rowling, it's pretty much any
female who writes like with a male main character for
young adults, it's like I can't let them know I'm
up girl. Yeah, so she just kept writing under that
name because this book blew up, so it was like
a no name. And also she likes to be private
and this isn't really let her like not she canna
be famous, but also nobody knows her, like there's really

(03:21):
nothing on her private life. She just does her own thing.
And this book is like known as being like a
big start of the popularity of young adult books. But
young adult books can be traced back like maybe to
eighteen hundred, so I might do a whole many on
it because they were was like conflicting things because like
teenagers weren't really a thing until the fifties. But yeah,

(03:43):
maybe not.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
It's so like one of the first like super popular ones.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, it got really popular immediately. I don't we'll get
into my thoughts on.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
That, Okay, I will say I don't know if it
came over the mic, but Nancy is laying behind me
and snoring. So if there are any weird little snorty
noises that make it through my microphone, that's my dog.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
I can't hear her, but I can't well, I was
able to see her. Now I can barely see her.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
She's yeah behind me. She just passed out. Okay, onto
this book though, which you guys may or may not know.
Who knows anyways, Pony Boy, our main character, is leaving
the movie theater. He loves movies, but he doesn't like
it to see them very much because none of his
gang likes them. And he's not supposed to go alone

(04:33):
technically because his gang is the Greasers and the other
gang is called the Socks, and like the Socks are
always on the lookout trying to beat up Greasers, and
like the Greasers are like the poor kids, and the
Socks are the not rich but like middle class ish.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah, they're like middle upper middle class kids.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, Pony, I'm gonna call him Pony most of the time.
He's only fourteen, so he's like pretty young. He's like
the youngest one in the gang, but his two older
brothers are in the gang too, Soda Pop, who is
sixteen and super pretty, and Darry, who is twenty and
super buff. Darry's actually named Darryl, but they call him Derry,

(05:14):
so whatever.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, I would like you to mention that Soda Pop
is his legal name.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
That's his legal name. Yeah, we'll talk about the names
later because I'm sure we both have a lot to
say about them. But whatever, there's there's no background, so
don't expect any explanations. Yeah, so Pony and his oldest brother, Darry,
they don't really get along because Derry's always like hassling
him about being better and Pony's not into that because

(05:40):
he's a teenager. But Pony doesn't like do crimes or anything,
even though he's like, I mean, they do like gang stuff,
but he doesn't like steal or anything because he knows.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Is a gang. Their gang is like just yeah, so
remember one and it's always sunny. Frank was like my
gang and it was like that do Op group. This
is like essentially yeah, guys and leather jackets who call
themselves a gang, but they just hang out.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, it's literally you know the movie Grease, how they
are greasers and they just sing and dance around. That's
that's it. They just put gel in their hair a lot.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
That's why grease mixed with a little bit of the
movie cry Baby.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
There you go. That's it, guys, I mean it makes sense. Yeah.
Also in my summary, I pretty sure I say Day
instead of Dary a lot because I'll get into it.
There's a guy named Dally too, because of course they're
I hate that these names are so similar.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
His name was Dallas, but yeah, he goes by Dowley.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Okay. Anyways, so, yeah, Pony doesn't do crime because Darry
wants him to like do good in school and stuff
and like get out of the greaser life and like
become somebody. But that's like really hard to do in
their neighborhood because they're poor. So he's Pony's walking down
the street and he knows there's a car following him,
and sure enough, like a group of socks get out
and start like yelling at him about they're like, you

(07:03):
want us to cut your greasy hair, Like we're gonna
cut your hair, greaser, And so they corner him because
there's like four or five of them, and they like
pin him down and one of them has a knife
and he's like, I'm gonna cut your hair and he's
like holding it in his face and stuff, and he
gets like punched a couple times and like kicked and stuff.
But then luckily his boys, his gang show up and

(07:23):
they like scare off the socks before like anything crazy happens,
which is good because a little while back, the other
young guy in the gang, whose name is Johnny, who
he's like more of the quote unquote gang pet because
he's just like a little guy, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
They just like that defensive thing to call someone, but
they're like, can we like him? He's cute, he's the gang.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Pet, like okay, but he got jumped by the socks
one time and they like fully fucked him up, like
he was found bloody in a field, like he's they
like one of the guys who punched him had a
bunch of rings on his face, so his face got
like fucked up and he's like totally scarred from this experience,
like totally spooky dude. But luckily that didn't happen to Pony,

(08:10):
So like he's his bros are all there and they're like, oh,
are you okay, And he's like trying not to cry,
but like he's fourteen and this was I mean, he
got jumped basically, so it's scary, but he's also like
it could have been worse, so I can't cry, and
I'm like, I guess. So he's standing with the boys,
which like so the gang. Besides his brothers and Johnny,

(08:30):
there's also two Bit Matthews, who they call him two
bit because he always like has to put in his
two bits, like he never shuts up about anything. And
then there's Dally Dallas. Dally he grew up on the
streets of New York, so he's like seen some shit
and he's basically always getting arrested, Like if anything happens
in town, the cops are like, oh dolly, we better

(08:53):
fucking question him because he's involved with everything. But also
he's like he's fun, he's a fun guy. Whatever. That's
the gang. That's it, that's all it, not a.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Pickang now a scary gang. Daly is the only one
who does crimes.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Just the neighborhood boys basically.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Just some guys who are relatively around the same age
from fourteen to like twenty.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, when you hang out. Yeah, so they're all giving
Pony shit for going to the movies alone, and they're like,
take one of us next time, like we'll watch a
movie with you. It's fine. And then Dally's like, ooh,
I'm gonna go to the drive in movie like tomorrow
to like catch some girls. Anyone want to come along,
and eventually like Ponies like, yeah, me and Johnny will
come with you, so they all go home. Whatever. Pony

(09:37):
goes to do his homework. He's reading Great Expectations, I'm
pretty sure for school, so he's got to like read
that because he's good. He does his homework because that's
what Dary demands from him, because like Darry, he was
also good in school. But he was like a killer athlete,
like he could have been part of the Socks because
he was like so cool in school and he got

(09:58):
like scholarships and all this. But even with the scholarships,
they couldn't afford to send him to college, which I'm like,
I guess whatever, but isn't that what, Like.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
He also couldn't go to college he had to work.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Yeah, well yeah, because he has to work two jobs
because they're orphans. But like that happened. I don't know
when exactly that happened. Do we get a timeline?

Speaker 1 (10:19):
I think their parents died probably around the time he
was graduating high school, so we just like couldn't do
it because he had to support his family because he
was a football player. He probably had gotten to college
to play football, and he was very smart and had
good grades.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah, but then his parents had to die in a
car accident. So he's got to take care of his brothers.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
They have bills and he's.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, so Darry's always working basically, and Pony and so
to sleep in the same bed to keep warm because
they're poor, so like they only got so much room.
So the next day, Pony and Johnny meet up with
Dally and they go to the drive in movie. But
they don't have a car, so they're like walking around
and like hanging, like jumping into like other greaser cars
and like mingling because they know a lot of the

(11:02):
people there. And then like they end up there's like
an area for like it's like seating for people who
don't have cars, because it's like only a quarter to
go in if you have a car. I don't know
the ambition with a car, but they end up over
there and there's two girls that are sitting alone, so
of course they go over there, and Dolly saunters over

(11:24):
and starts like bothering these girls, like full on like
harassing these girls will not leave them alone. They do
not want to hang out with him, but he will
not give up. And Pony recognizes the girls from school
and like knows that they're both socks. So him and
Johnny are just kind of in the background while Dally
is harassing them. And one of the girls is she

(11:47):
has like red hair and her name is Cherry because
but she goes by Cherry because of her hair. The
other girl's name Marsha, I think, And so eventually Cherry
starts talking to Pony because she's like, hey, don't we
go to school together, and he's like yeah. And she
also knows like soda and Darry as well, because like
everyone knows Darry. And then Dally like goes to get

(12:09):
SODA's for the girls and he gives them their drinks
and the one girl starts drinking it, but Cherry is
just like fuck you and dumps hers on him, which
is like, I was like, oh, that's fun.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Good for her, Okay, what a waste.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
He This like doesn't deter him either like I think
he gets a little mad, but he just like stays
on being annoying until like eventually Johnny's like leave them alone,
and like he actually listens because like Johnny never speaks
up like that, and Johnny like idolizes Dolly, so like,
oh my god, Dolly is like and leaves, and so

(12:43):
then it's just Johnny and Pony hanging with the girls.
And so Pony's talking to Cherry and she's like, oh,
like he's like saying like everything's easy for the socks
or some shit, and she's like, actually, life is a
sock can be like pretty stressful. Like we may have
some money and we always like have parties and stuff,
but like we still have problems, like everyone has problems.

(13:03):
And Pony's like, yo, okay, whatever you say, because he's like, ah,
a lot of my problems could be solved with money,
which is like valid, but he doesn't really believe her.
Later on, they have this like moment about like how
they both watched the same sunset, so like wow, they're
really not that different, and then Pony and Cherry like
they go to get popcorn at one point and then

(13:24):
two Bits shows up and he's talking about how Dally
like went and I think he slashed some people's tires
and then got caught, and it's like if he hadn't
got caught, it would have been fine, but like, I
don't know, he's like in trouble with some other dudes
because of that. Basically, yeah, and oh and I forgot.

(13:45):
When Pony and Cherry are getting popcorn, Pony tells her
about how Johnny got attacked by the socks and like
left for dead, and she's like, that's really fucked up,
but not all the socks are like that, and I'm like, girl,
calm down. And so after the movie, the boys offer
to walk the girl's home because they're alone, and they're
like okay, and they're all like walking and talking, and

(14:07):
Pony's still talking to Cherry and he's he's telling her
about Soda and how Soda used to have this horse
that he was obsessed with and like they had like
the best relationship, but then the horse got sold because
it wasn't really their horse. Soda was just like friends
with it and it was like a really nice horse,
so like it got sold for a lot of money.
And then Cherry is like, okay, well you've told me

(14:30):
all about soda, but like, what about your other brother brother,
Like what about Darry? And Pony's like, well, Darry hates
me and nothing I ever do is good enough for him.
And two Bit and Johnny are like, bro, what that
is not true? What are you talking about? And then
Pony gets all pissy and he's like you don't get it,
nothing's fair, and he's like crying, Well he's not crying,

(14:52):
but he's being a cry baby.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Yeah, this is when I decided I hate Pony. I'm like,
fuck this kid.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, he's just a whiner, he's a teenager. Whatever. But
then a car pulls up and it's Cherry and Marsha's
boyfriends and they're drunk and trying to pick a fight.
So the girls like are like, we'll come with you, like,
no fighting, because.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Drunk drivers, no problem.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
It's the sixties, it's the fifties, sixties whatever drunk driving
was legal, encouraged probably probably whatever. Before she gets in
the car, Cherry makes sure to tell Pony that like,
she likes him, he's a cool dude, but like she's
not gonna talk to him at school, so like, don't try.
And he's like, yeah, I figured and I'm like, that's.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
It's also when she's like, I would totally fall in
love with Dallas.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Yeah, She's like, if I hung out with him enough,
I would fall in love with Daly, So I have
to stay away from him. And Pony's just like what
the fuck?

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah, He's like, where did this come?

Speaker 2 (15:53):
You were so mad at him that whole time.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
You try, no explanation, nothing. She just says and leaves,
and he's like, I'm weird.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Whatever. So the girls and their shitty boyfriends leave and
then Tubit is like, I'm gonna go get drunk. So
then he leaves and I'm like why was he even here?
But okay, and then Pony and Johnny like wander to
there's like an abandoned lot, which is like the Greaser headquarters.
It's just like an abandoned lot, and they the lot

(16:24):
we hang out at exactly, and they just like lay
down and fall asleep because I don't think I really
talk about it. But Johnny has a terrible home life,
like his parents hate him and are like drunk all
the time and don't notice when he's not home, and
when they do notice, they like beat him and tell
him they hate him. So he really stays away from

(16:45):
home as often as possible. So he's like, I'm fine sleeping,
like they didn't mean to fall asleep, but he's gonna
sleep in that abandoned lot basically yeah. But they wake
up in the middle of the night and Johnny's like, dude,
we fall asleep and Soda or not Soda pu He's
like fuckcause and he runs home because it's past curfew.
His brothers are awake waiting for him. So Darry starts

(17:07):
yelling immediately, and he's like sorry, like I fell asleep,
and Darry's like you never think about anything because he's
still mad about, you know, earlier in the day when
he got jumped by the socks and so then Soda
tries to defend Pony because he's like give him a break,
you know, and then Derry gets mad. He's like you
always defend him. Shut up. So then Pony gets mad

(17:28):
and he's like, don't yell, it's Soda. So Darry whirls
around and slaps Pony in the face and they all
like freeze and he's like, oh, like I didn't mean to,
like I'm sorry, but Pony just bolts. He runs out
the door. He runs back to the lot with Johnny.
He's just hanging out and he's like, we gotta go,
and Johnny's like okay, So they just like run and

(17:48):
then when they calm down, Johnny's like, what what happened?
And Pony's like, Darry hit me and he like explains
what happened, and he's like I got it, Like I can't,
I can't be over there.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
I have to run away from home.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
I gotta go, And Johnny's like down because he hates
it there and basically said he was gonna kill himself if.

Speaker 1 (18:08):
My family every day. But cool, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
I'm suppose he doesn't hang out at the guy's house
because like later on it, like they talk about like
people just sleep at their house all the time. They
never lock the doors, so make sleep there.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
The guy in charge of the house is twenty and
their friend so like, yeah, I don't know why this lot.
They hang on some lot for no reason. When they
have a house with no parents.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
You're the gang pet, you should sleep in the house.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Like yeah, if this was any other like normal teenager,
they would just live with their friends.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
But whatever. Yeah, So they decided to like walk to
the park to cool down, and like think about things, basically,
and when they get to the park, they're like, need
this like fountain. When the socks from before come back
and they're all mad that the guy were with their
girlfriends basically, and Pony suspects that these are the same

(19:03):
guys that beat the shit out of Johnny before because
they have the same car and the one dude has
a bunch of rings on his finger. He's right, they
are the same dudes. They end up grabbing Pony and
they're like, mm, grease, sir, let's wash the grease out
of your hair. And they just like dunk him in
the fountain and he's like fully gonna drown, Like they're

(19:25):
just holding him under. He's about to pass out when
suddenly he's released and when he like spits all the
water out whatever, Johnny is like I killed that guy.
And he's like what and he's like he was gonna
drown you and I stabbed him and he's dead now,
and sure enough, there's just a dead guy and like
blood everywhere, so now really gotta go. Already has left, Yeah,
they his friends just leave. They're like, yeah, which.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
Could have He could have probably been saved if everybody
didn't just leave him.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
He grab him and go but whatever, just no one
likes Bob anyways, I guess, but they did so whatever. Anyways,
so they they're like, we really got to run away now,
but they need supplies, so they go. They decide to
go see Dally because they know he'll help them out
and because he's always doing crime, so he knows. So

(20:12):
they find him and he's like at a party and
he was like getting laid but stopped to to see
what they needed, and they're like, we just killed a
guy and he's like okay. So he gives them a
gun and like a bundle of money, and like he
gives a pony a new shirt since he's like soaking wet,
and he's like, go catch a train, go to this

(20:34):
town and like go hide basically, and then I'll like
check in with you later. So they run and get
on a train and they like fall asleep in the
train car for a minute and then like jump off
and walk to town. And they go and ask some
random dude where Jay Mountain is because that's where Dally

(20:54):
said to go, and he gives them directions. They find
this like old church, old like abandoned church to hide
in and just like pass out.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Well, yeah, dow. He's like, go this old church down
Jay Mountain in this town, hang out, but don't go
to the front church stand there. Like he had this
whole plan immediately.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
He had it thought out, I guess for in case
you ever need it before.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
Have to think about it. He said, okay, you need
to run. All right, here we go.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
He had this waiting for this day. I've had this
plan ready.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
Because someone was gonna need this church that I somehow
know of. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
So Pony wakes up in the morning and Johnny is gone,
but he wrote a note like in the dirt on
the floor saying he was getting supplies because they got
to disguise themselves, you know, because they're wanted for murder obviously,
So they got to cut off their hair. So Johnny
does ponies first and then he like has peroxide and
they bleach it a little bit too. And this is

(21:48):
like heartbreaking for Pony because he's been growing his hair
out for a while and it was like super tough
looking and like so good, and Johnny's hair whatever, So
they cut his It's not a big deal. Johnny's kind
of ugly, so it doesn't matter. But Pony's pretty, so
this matters.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Now. It's pretty as Soda, who is gorgeous.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Yes, I think in the movie, I think Soda might
be played by Bread.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Pitt so because Pony is Roblo, right.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
I think so. I've never actually seen the movie, so.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
I just know Robblos in it, and I assume Pony.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
It's got like. I looked it up the other day
and there's quite a few people like that, you know.
Nicholas Cage's dad directed, and I think a copy. Anyways,
back to this, Johnny also besides hair supplies, he brought
back like some snacks, some cards, and a copy of
Gone with the Wind for Pony since he's a nerd
and he likes to read books. They start eating their

(22:45):
snacks they have like chocolate bars and stuff, and he
also bought like a bunch of boloney because boloney's cheap,
and then they have a little freak out session about how, yes,
just yesterday they were at the movie with the girls
and now they're on the run for murder, and Johnny's
like shut up, and Pony's like okay, So they like
cry about it and then they're over it, and then
Pony's like that's it. We just had to get it
out of our systems. Like, Okay, it was murder, but

(23:09):
I guess.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
Defense, it's not full on murder.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
You're not going to get over it immediately no matter
what you're.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
I mean, yeah, you did kill, you did stab.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
Yeah, killed a guy. It was I mean self defense.
But like, like so for the next few days, they
read the book, they play poker. Johnny really likes the book.
I think it's uh. Pony reads it aloud to Johnny basically,
and Johnny's really into it because it talks about like
southern gentleman and stuff, and he's really into the idea
of the southern gentleman, and he thinks Daly is like that,

(23:41):
and Pony is just like, oh, I did not realize
how obsessed he was with Dally, but okay, don't see it,
but fine. And then one morning, it's like the fourth day,
I don't know, Pony's like up early and smoking a
cigarette while watching the sunrise, and then Johnny shows up
and he's like, wow, it's so there's like so much gold.

(24:02):
And then Pony like recites a whole ass poem that
he had memorized and one of the lines is like
nothing gold can say, can stay, and Johnny's like what
and He's like, oh, it's like a Robert Frost poem,
YadA YadA. And then Johnny's like, wow, hanging out with
you has really made me notice like nature and stuff,
like you and your brothers are weird. And Pony gets

(24:24):
all mad, but it's like not an insult, it's just like,
y'all notice shit. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
Well, Johnny's like, I have a shit life. It's cool
that you get to like go to school and stuff.
I'm always surviving over here.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
That too, He's like, I don't have time to enjoy life.
I am suffering.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
He said, my parents meet me. I was also almost murdered.
Now I kill the guy. It's really my life is terrible.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
He's just fifteen.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
Maybe I don't know Sean Johnny fixteen yike, but like
barely sixteen. Yeah, he's had the worst time.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Yeah. So by day five, Pony is sick of Bologney
pony baloney because that's all that they eat, which I'm like,
how are you even storing that? That's gross? But whatever.
He also owes Johnny one hundred and fifty dollars from
their poker games, which I'm like, I guess you have
nothing else to do, but like, stop while you're ahead, pony.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
Well, he's never gonna be able to pay it back,
it's not he's never gonna get that opportunity.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
But then he's woken up by Dally poking him and
making fun of his hair because he looks stupid now
with his short hair, and they're like yay, Dally, and
Delly takes him to breakfast because he's like, I drove here.
The cops think you're in Texas because like, of course,
as soon as there was a crime, they questioned me
because they figured I was involved, since I'm involved in

(25:44):
all of the crimes. He takes pride in that, by
the way, and he led them astray. He's like, I
let it slip. You were on your way to Texas.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
And is involved in this crime as an accomplice now,
so the cops aren't wrong. Don't want to bet, but
like they have their hunch.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
He knows about this crime. He knows everything, actually, but
he gives plenty a letter from Soda that's basically like, hey,
I heard you got in trouble. We're super worried about you.
Darry doesn't know what to do, like we miss you,
et cetera. Be safe, and he's like cool. So they
go to Dairy Queen and heat Hella ice cream and

(26:23):
cheeseburgers and Dally is like, yeah, so the guy that
you killed was apparently really popular. So the Socks are
just like attacking everyone all over the place and like
no one can travel anymore without like you gotta be
with someone, and you gotta have a weapon. So I
have a gun, but it's not loaded, like it's just
a bluff and it's working pretty well, and Pony's like, bro,

(26:43):
what the fuck? But like and Dolly just like shrugs
it off, like he literally is like what can you do?
And then he's like, oh yeah, Also, that red haired
bitch from the movies she's spying for us, so like
that's fun.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
Wow, what a cliffhanger, but yeahs like, hey, yeah, Cherry
showed up and we thought about jumping her, right, but
then she said that the whole thing was her fault
and that she testify that it was self defense, so
we did not jump her as initially we wanted to,
which still crazy dollly tells them it was a good

(27:20):
idea to cut their hair because like their descriptions are
all over the paper, and Johnny's like, thanks, it was
my idea. I am not stupid, and then I don't
know where. Johnny's like, h we're going to head back
home and turn ourselves in. Didn't he didn't ask Pony
about this, He just said we're going to do that.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Everyone aka Johnny or Pony and Dollly are shocked. But
Johnny's like, they probably won't go hard on me with
Pony and Cherry testifying your self defense, like we won't
say shit about Dolly helping us with like the gun
and the money and everything, because we don't want him
in trouble. And I was like, are you sure, and
He's like yeah, I feel bad making Pony stand in
this church with me when his brothers are at home

(27:57):
like worried about him, because that note was like what
the fuck you just left? We're worried, like you literally
ran out of the house and now you've been gone
for days.

Speaker 2 (28:04):
It's gonna.

Speaker 1 (28:07):
He's like hey, and then Johnny's like, here, my parent's
worried about me, and Dolly's like the whole gang has
been really worried, like we all miss you and He's like, okay,
but what about my parents, And Dolly's like, fucking no,
they're not worried obviously, right, But he's like, don't even
worry about it, Like my parents stuck and I don't
give a fuck, so you shouldn't either.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
They'll just like get over it.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
Like I guess. I mean, not the best pep talk,
but you have a point. So they're in the car
now and they drive. They're driving back to the church,
and now the church is on fire and there's a
crowd of people around it, and Pony instantly is like,
oh my god, we set the church on fire because
they were the ones in there, and they probably did
not confirmed.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
With lots of cigarettes, so who knows.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
He said they were careful, but they are also teams
who just murdered someone.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
Like so they smoked so many cigarettes.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
Also, okay, he's like a three pack a day happen now,
like he can. Throughout the rest of this book, he's
having breathing issues because he is smoking too much. So
they get out of the car to check it out,
and some lady nearby is like, oh my god, there's
eight kids missing. Because there's kids on a field trip around.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
An abandoned church. Where else do you take check out?

Speaker 1 (29:13):
So eight kids are not accounted for, and Pony and
Johnny instantly run into the church, into the fire. They're
going to save these eight kids. They find him very
quickly in the back and Pony starts throwing them out
the window, just tossing kids as you have to. Yeah,
I don't Johnny's doing something too, I guess.

Speaker 2 (29:30):
But people like they're doing like chain of children.

Speaker 1 (29:34):
And Dolly's right outside the window now and he's like, hey,
you gotta get out. The roof's gonna collapse. And once
all the kids are out, Pony jumps out the window
and like behind him, here is a crash and here's
Johnny screaming. So he tries to go back for Johnny,
but then Dolly knocks him out, like he hits him
on the back and he collapses. He wakes up in
an ambulance. There's this guy in there with him. He's like,
where's Johnny and DOLLI And he's told by this dude

(29:57):
that we're in an ambulance, Like they're in an ambulance.
Behind us, your back was on fire, but your jacket
prevented most of the damage and you're gonna be okay.
So Dolly like hit him to put the fire out
and then it knocked him out because he's weak, I guess.
But he learns that Dolly burned one arm pretty bad
trying to get Johnny out of the fire. Like he's
pretty good Johnny, though not good, bad condition. He was
hit by a falling piece of wood and might have

(30:19):
a broken back and also got severely burned.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Yeah, and they don't even talk about smoke inhalation, but
you know that's got to be bad too.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Yeah, I mean their lungs, you probably couldn't tell the
difference between like their normal lungs and their lungs.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
I didn't know about smoke inhalation back then. They were like, oh, okay,
that's just how cigarettes are.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Yeah. So he's like, you guys are like the three
bravest kids I've ever seen, and he calls them heroes.
But Pony, I don't know, it's like, nah, we're gracers.
Nobody what a graser is. But Pony's like, Johnny's wanted
for a murder and this.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Guy's like, what you know when you just like just
start yapping.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
And I'm like, dude, and but he's like, yeah, take
us to town and you'll find out. And the guy's like, well,
we are headed to town because that's where the hospital is,
and your idea said you lived there, so we're going
that way. And he's like, it's also wild that your
name is Lee pony Boy, and he's like, yeah, tell
me about it.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Yeah, and he's like, my brother's name is Soda Pop.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
Yeah. This guy's like, what the fuck is your wife? Literally,
I mean imagine meeting this kid. He just saved people.
Then he tells you he's wanted involved in a murder
and also his name is like Lee pony Boy, Nay
has a brother named Soda Pop. Right, I'd be like,
your life is stupid.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
So at the hospital to check Pony over and he's like,
your injuries are pretty minor. You could like you're good.
So he waits in the waiting room for news about
Dally and Johnny, and the guy in the ambulance stays
with him this whole time until his brothers show up.
So first SODA's like, oh my god, your hair, but
then he hugs him because the hair is and then

(31:53):
he when Pony sees Dary's face, he's like, oh my God,
my brother and my love me. I was just like
worried about me and cared, which is why he's like
been hard on me.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
What so crazy.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
So they hug and cry and like say sorry, and
they all three wait in the hospital for news reporters
and cops like keep stopping by asking questions. They tell
him everything. They have like no filter, They're just like
saying whatever.

Speaker 2 (32:17):
Truly, that's how it was back then. That's why you
could get away with crime so easy.

Speaker 1 (32:22):
Because if you just tell the cops exactly what happened,
and you're fine, like oh, like they just put the
reporters their whole ass life story.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
You tell them a reporter first, you know, then it's
just fine.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
But yeah, and so does like loving this attention. He
jokingly he's like reaching for a cops gun and the
cops just like laughs and they're like, oh funny. And
I'm like, okay, these kids are white, like what you're
reaching for a cops gun and the cop is just
like you silly kid, you silly little soda pop. And
you know they're not an actual gang. So uh, they

(32:57):
like do have to end up begging for infil On
Daly and Johnny because they're like not family, but like
we're part of the same gang. And the doctors are like, Okay,
that's not exactly what we're looking for, but whatever. They
find out that Daly will be okay, only his army
will be kind of fucked up. But Johnny is in
critical condition. His back was broken and if he lives,

(33:18):
he's gonna be paralyzed for the rest of his life.
This fuck's Pony up. Him and his brothers go home,
and Pony takes a shower and sleeps for a bit,
but wakes up before the others. He starts to make breakfast,
but he's interrupted by other gang members who come by,
just tubit and uh, Steve, who you didn't mention? Oh yeah,
he's so does Besty can't believe that I forgot about Steve.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Steve doesn't like Pony, so.

Speaker 1 (33:44):
He doesn't do much in general, but Steve is there.
So two Bit and Steve come by, and they like
show him a newspaper calling him a hero. But like
they're like, oh, also, if Johnny lives, he's gonna get
charged with manslaughter. Rude, I guess. And they're also like,
oh yeah, and your family might like, like, you know,

(34:05):
since your whole family situation was in the newspaper. The
you're gonna have to go to court and maybe get
taken away from your home to go to a foster home. Yep, yeah,
so doesn't love to hear that. Then they talk about
the rumble that's gonna go down like that night between
them and the Socks, because they like have this agreement
to fight it out, but like no weapons. It's seem

(34:26):
to be like I keep a little fight just for
funds wins. There's like if they win, they have to
leave them alone or something. I don't know. Yeah, it
seemed pretty low stakes, like what's the point of this fight?

Speaker 2 (34:38):
But everyone's gonna be there.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
And they're like, we're gonna get the other gang or
like our sister gang to help us out. Who has
a name I can't remember at the moment because you
don't think I ever wrote it down.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
It's like whatever their last name is or something. It's
not very exciting.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
Tony also does not been feeling great this whole time,
but doesn't want anyone to notice because he doesn't want
to miss out on this big fight. But he definitely
has a concussion definitely. So Dari and Soda have stuff
to do like that day they have jobs. So Pony
goes out with two bits to go get some soda
a coke. He loves coke. He's obsessed with coke. He's
addicted to coke, but the soda, not the drug. Yeah,

(35:14):
and that's how they're not actually fun. They're just kids.
He's just a child drinking soda.

Speaker 2 (35:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:20):
So while out they run into Randy, who is the
dead guy Bob's bestie, one of the guys who jumped
him in the park. And Randy he's like, hey, Pony boy,
come over here and like let's talk. And Pony's like, okay, weird,
but like he can't do anything because we have this
rumble plan, so like he wouldn't like, you know. So
he gets into Randy's car and d He's like, hey,

(35:41):
I'm not gonna get the fight because, like all my
best friend's death really fucked me up and I don't
like fighting anymore and I'm over it. Yeah, And Ponty's like,
you know what fair the tracks, bro? Yeah right, Bob
wasn't even a bad guy, and I'm like he was
maybe murdering someone, so he.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Kind of I've almost killed one guy and then tried
to kill another guy. So yeah, he.

Speaker 1 (36:05):
Even this guy, he's just like when he's drunk, he sacks,
but like other than that, he's great. And I'm like,
that's not it, and.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
Like he's kind of drunk all the time, but like
when he's sober, he's such a nice guy.

Speaker 1 (36:16):
Yeah, sorry, he tried to kill you.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
He was just drunk.

Speaker 1 (36:20):
Yeah, So ponya two but decided to go visit Johnny
in the hospital, and when they get there, Johnny's not
looking good. He is really weak, but he asked Pony
to like he said, hey, can you give me another
copy of Gone with the Wind so I can read it,
because like they didn't get to finish it, and also
their copy got burnt up. And Johnny's mom is also
in the hospital, but Johnny don't want to see her,

(36:40):
and she's like in the waiting room freaking out, be
like but I'm his mom, I served to see him.
And the doctor's like, fuck off, So she's unhappy. I'm
looking for Johnny for having boundaries.

Speaker 2 (36:52):
Good for him.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
So they leave Johnny to like rest and they go
see Dally and he's doing great. He's fine, Daly asked too,
but if he can like borrow this fancy switchblade and tuba.
It's like, yeah, here you go, guy in a hospital bed,
here's a knife. No questions asked, yep. So they head
back home and Pony runs into Cherry and she's like, Hey,

(37:17):
I don't want to visit Johnny in the hospital because
I'm mad at him for killing my boyfriend.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
Yeah. He's like, like, I know he was trying to kill you,
but like he was still my boyfriend. Yikes.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
Yeah, And she's like, you know, when he wasn't drunk,
he was actually pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (37:33):
Like I've heard this many times. He's like, when he
was drunk though.

Speaker 1 (37:38):
So I've had bad experiences. And Pony thinks she's kind
of a bitch for this and that she has bad
taste of men because she also said she was into Dally,
So Noally's a mess. So he's like, you you a mess.
Pony seriously is getting sicker and sicker, like he definitely
has a concussion, her head injury. He's nauseous, he's dizzy,
he's like has a headache. He's taking some pain meds

(38:00):
and just try to ignore it because he wants to
go to this fight and he knows his brothers he'll
be like, hey don't, and they should also just say
hey don't because he was in the hospital literally like
the day before.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
He was so.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
They all are getting ready for the fight. He first
admires how hot his brothers are. He has to make
sure to mention that a lot. He is obsessed with
his brother's appearances. He's like, Dally's shirt is so tight
on his muscles, and Pony.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
Is just like he's like so pretty.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
He's like, so does like a gorgeous guy, and Daly
is like so hot and ripped.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
My brothers yeah, and their sister Gang is at the
lot when they show up, and he's like, these guys
are like real deal criminals. We're just like guys who
hang out, like we don't actually belong here. But the
other side shows He's like, we don't really belong They do,
because like they're actual criminals, but we are just chill dudes. Yeah,

(38:58):
but the other side shows up. They fight. There's not much.
I mean, like it's really uneventful for the most part.
Dolly shows up in the middle of it, like having
left the hospital just to fight. The Gracers win to
like yeah for them, what does it mean? Nothing? Right? Afterwards,
Pony and Dally go to the hospital see Johnny and

(39:18):
they're like, see that he is for sure dying. Then
he dies. Then he just literally just dies.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
He just dies.

Speaker 1 (39:24):
He just dies in front of them. Dolly freaks out,
runs off, Pony has to walk home. He's in shock.
He's like, just should not be walking around alone. But
he gets home eventually tells everyone that Johnny died, and
then they get a call from Dally who's like, hey, guys,
I robbed a store and the cops are on my ass.
So they go leave to like find him and try
to help him out because he does rob things. He

(39:46):
has shoplifted, this isn't that crazy for him, but they
find him in a lot. But also the cops find
him too, and so dollly has his gun on him
that he gets previously said not loaded, and he decides
to commit suicide by cops. Races is gunna get shot
the fuck up? Which I mean a choice. Pony, being
dramatic and needing to be the center of attention, passes

(40:08):
out at this point. He wakes up at home, spend
some time like being depressed because like two of his
friends died in the same day and it's like traumatic
or whatever. I go and he's like starting to do
like really bad in school too, which makes Diry mad.
So they start fighting and eventually Soda is just like
can't take it anymore and he's like stop fighting. Also,
during all this time, Soda had a girlfriend who was

(40:29):
like trying to propose to but then she like moved
out of state.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
You know, like Florida or some shit.

Speaker 1 (40:34):
Yeah, so that's like a whole other plot line. So
he's already has his own shit going on, and now
his brother fighting. But Sota tells Ponies stopped fighting with
Darry and Pony's like, oh my gosh, Dard has done
so much for me. So he decides he's gonna write
a school paper about their lives. And that's this book.
Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (40:49):
The end, Yeah, because this teacher is like one big
project and it'll save your grades, so do good. And wow,
it's this book. Oh my god. So this had Hella reviews.
There's like thousands of reviews for this fucking book and
it got a four point six average, which is pretty good, Sydney,

(41:11):
one of the highest ones we've seen. I don't know,
just for volume. Basically, so my husband has been trying
to get me to read this for years. I finally
did to win a bet. I won the bet, sure,
but my husband was right. I did love this. I
couldn't put it down and cried multiple times. I almost
wish I had lost the bet. Five stars.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
I don't get it.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
Literally, so many of these reviews were about crying, Sydney,
so you're the weird one, not me.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
I truly did not cry at all. Didn't even feel
a little sad. Just like I got more kids, I
expected more kids to die.

Speaker 2 (41:45):
Who's not enough like no two or technically yeah three.

Speaker 1 (41:51):
I wanted more like if soda or dairy.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Died, then I'd be like, oh, the whole gang dead.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
I needed like one of the brothers did. Anyways, I'm
a tad confused. The girl Power four stars.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
I don't know what that one's about.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
Is the author being a woman and it's like a
popular book, so good for her.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
That was like one of the first ones I saw.
That was the first one I chose. I was like, yeah, okay, cute.
I wish I had grown up with it instead of
reading it retroactively. When I read in the interview after
the book that the author wrote it when she was
fifteen and flunking creative writing class, the quality of writing
made more sense. Lol, three stars.

Speaker 1 (42:31):
That does. Actually, that's a good point. That is why
I think the dialogue sounds fake as shit.

Speaker 2 (42:36):
She's fifteen, you know, all right.

Speaker 1 (42:38):
I give it, SIMI leeway for that. I just couldn't
get invested in this book and it doesn't relate to
me at all. Also, the EMPC is kind of sexist
and is denying through the beginning half of the book,
then stops two stars. I mean second, I don't I
guess seconds remain part of this book.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
Yeah, okay, okay, blah. I don't know why anyone likes
this book. I really don't get it. That one was
also two stars. I couldn't find a one star, and
then I got bored of looking, so.

Speaker 1 (43:07):
You know what that one? Yeah, I really don't get it.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
Yeah, I don't know. Most bitches like this book.

Speaker 1 (43:14):
Don't get it. Okay, here, and this is why I
think you write this book. But here's my question. Do
you think you tolerate ponymore because you're also the youngest
sibling and you just can relate to him.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
I think I just relate to teen angst.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
I just because like the whole time was like Darry
is right, Like this little bit is being such a
fucking piece of shit. His older brother sacrifices life for him,
he has to give up everything, like his older brothers
are doing so much for him, and this little bitch
is out here complaining.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
Yeah, okay, you're reading this as an adult who could
see past it. You have to read it like an
angsty teen who thinks that whole world is against them.

Speaker 1 (43:53):
I was the oldest sibling, I would have been like, yeah,
you have to be responsible, and I was.

Speaker 2 (43:57):
The angsty youngest sibling. Sydney.

Speaker 1 (44:00):
Yeah, I don't get the responsibility of it.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
My answer is yes, I really was.

Speaker 1 (44:05):
Like I think, do any just as a younger.

Speaker 2 (44:07):
Sibling younger sibling complex?

Speaker 1 (44:09):
Yeah, she just thinks that ponies, you know, normal. Nancy's
on my side. She is.

Speaker 2 (44:13):
Nancy's trying to push me out.

Speaker 1 (44:15):
Well, she's also the oldest sibling.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
She is the oldest sibling, and she hates being the
oldest sibling.

Speaker 1 (44:20):
Yeah, a lot of it's a lot more pressure than
you realize.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
I'd say, I can't relate, never will, So yeah, you
would have.

Speaker 1 (44:27):
Never had to raise your whole family if your kids
had to raise me. Yeah, this kid sucks.

Speaker 2 (44:33):
And I'm like, oh, saying he's great or anything, but
I guess I just get it, Okay, I mean anyways,
and do you think CPS should have been evolved this
entire time though.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
Well, I mean, yeah, the second he is accomplished for
murder and also in a.

Speaker 2 (44:51):
Fire, Nana, I'm saying even before that because okay, the
parent's side, even if Darry was eighteen, I feel like
there would be a lot more investigation. And I don't know.

Speaker 1 (45:01):
Nowadays, yes, but the sixties, I think they just want
to be he's legal. But yeah, I mean like they
wouldn't just let most eighteen year olds be in charge
of their younger cities.

Speaker 2 (45:14):
Well, and like I get it because they they at
that age and like with their little greasy reputations, they
wouldn't be adopted like Soda and a Pony would just
be in the foster system essentially.

Speaker 1 (45:29):
Yeah, they probably be in a home like for just boys.

Speaker 2 (45:32):
Because I mean it would be worse than the situation maybe,
but yeah, a little more structured.

Speaker 1 (45:39):
It was two years ago than Pony was twelve, so yeah, yeah,
nobody's adopting that twelve year old. Yeah, but yeah, CPS,
I mean should have I mean especially towards once they
like we're involved in crimes and.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
Things like I know that the judge kind of like
just waves it off at the end, but like there's
obviously some issues here. Also, they're in a gang, even
if it's not.

Speaker 1 (46:06):
A real gang, real gang. It's not like they're part
of the Crypts of the Bloods. They're not like over
here and throwing.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
Like greasers don't have a great reputation. So like I
think there's like.

Speaker 1 (46:15):
Kids who wear their hair weird.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
It's not you know, Yeah, they're not dally so.

Speaker 1 (46:24):
Yeah, they're not out here like murdering, you know how
they get jumped into this gang. They're just kids who
hang out who live nearby. Yeah, gang is a loose term,
very loose term. Okay, maybe this is also why I
hate pony Boy. But do you think pony Boy or
Cherry is more manny manic pixie dream girl? I mean

(46:45):
pony Boy the whole time is like I'm not like
other kids.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
He is. He is. I do think still Cherry more,
but like because I see her very much like she
reminds me of Alaska and looking for Alaska where she's
like everything's hard and everything sucks, even like memory, you know,
she's like very.

Speaker 1 (47:05):
Yeah, and she's like I would go with the crazy guy.
And also sunsets, I watch them. But he's also like,
I'm not like other boys. I watch the sunset, I
read books.

Speaker 2 (47:16):
I call moving movies.

Speaker 1 (47:18):
Yeah, like he is so much like I'm not like
other girls. I wanted to good.

Speaker 2 (47:22):
When he goes on that rant about like I can't
watch movies with girls because I don't want them to
like see how I'm reacting, and I can. I like,
he's so particular about watching movies because he's like, no
one gets movies like I do. They don't get into
them like I do. And I'm like, shut up, no
one cares.

Speaker 1 (47:38):
It's just a bad everyone else he's a snob crazy.

Speaker 2 (47:44):
Yeah, maybe he is, I mean mostly just because we
get a lot more of his perspective, but like he
probably is more of one from what we get in
the book.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
You know, just is Yeah, the whole I'm not like
other girl's attitude. He has truly annoying.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Okay, my next question, I know it kind of goes
with your question, but like, why did Darry get a
normal name, and also would you rather be named soda
pop or pony boy?

Speaker 1 (48:10):
Uh Dari got a normal name because he was the
oldest and the parents were not psychotic at that point, right,
But I'm see this is a hard one. I'm gonna
have to go soda Pop honestly, because here's my raising.
We didn't mention this, but his dad's nickname for him
was Pepsi Cola. And I think that's hilarious.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
That is hilarious and adorable. I think I would pick
pony boy because pony and I feel like it's at
least I think pony boy is a tiny bit more
less crazy.

Speaker 1 (48:42):
I wouldn't want to be called boy, Like I'm an
adult going by a pony boy. You'd have to get
shorting it to pony. But like you're, what's seventy years old,
they're calling you pony boy. Seems disrespectful.

Speaker 2 (48:55):
I don't know, well, I mean, this is just like
Daryl Darry, Like you tell people they're gonna call you
your nickname.

Speaker 1 (49:02):
But like pony boy, I just had the bowe in there.
Drives me crazy?

Speaker 2 (49:06):
Why? Right? And at least like I don't know, well, no,
we don't get any that's the thing, you don't get
any background for either of them other than their dad
just thought they were funny names. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
Yeah, well, here, what about the mom?

Speaker 2 (49:19):
What the fuck does she think?

Speaker 1 (49:21):
Apparently she was cool enough with it, because here's my question.
Do you think their parents deserve to die for naming
their kids still to pop a pony boy?

Speaker 2 (49:27):
Okay? You know, I just thought of so this was
like in the fifties and stuff. Was this back when
they just like put women out when they had babies?

Speaker 1 (49:36):
Yeah, this is kind of during So what.

Speaker 2 (49:38):
If she just like, well, her husband was like, I
named pony boy.

Speaker 1 (49:43):
Well, i'll see. The fun thing about Twilight Sleep is
you weren't actually like knocked out. You were just fucking
out of your mind. So they would trap you down
and you were like hallucinating hardcore. You just don't remember it,
but you are awake and just straight trip in. But
like having a it's like it was they had to
drop you down because you could get violent.

Speaker 2 (50:04):
I mean yeah, because you're still probably I mean, you're hallucinating,
but you're obviously still experiencing pain and confusion. So maybe
that's where it comes from. Maybe she was just hallucinating
crazy and her husband was just like, oh my god,
you have some great name ideas.

Speaker 1 (50:19):
Oh the husband wasn't in the room. They show up
later on.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
That's true. So yeah, I definitely think, yeah, those are
terrible names, and especially since we don't get the backstory,
kill them. Well they do die, so that's karma.

Speaker 1 (50:34):
I feel like maybe they had it coming in or all.
So maybe CPSH had just been involved from the very
start for that reason.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
Maybe whatever, Okay, I don't remember. I changed this last
question because it used to be about Soda Pop and
his girlfriend, But like, whatever, why did Dally call the boys?
Because I feel like he was fully planning on killing himself,
so like why did he want his friends there to
see that?

Speaker 1 (50:58):
I don't know her funds. Maybe he was like not
like he was thinking about it, but I think he
was just kind of in a panic, like, hey, oh
my god, this is happening. But when he saw the opportunity,
he was like yeah, fuck momay.

Speaker 2 (51:12):
Yeah, because that's pretty traumatic for everyone involved.

Speaker 1 (51:15):
But I guess yeah, an audience. I don't know. He
also couldn't have predicted, like he the cops were on
his tail, but like he could have predicted exactly that
would have happened because you didn't tell him where they were.
They just kind of like tracked him down.

Speaker 2 (51:30):
Yeah, he told them like where he was going or something.

Speaker 1 (51:33):
Well, he was like, hey, I robbed the store, I'm
on the run. And they're like, well, where would he run?
The lot?

Speaker 2 (51:39):
That's where they always go, And yeah, I guess, but wild.
I only have like four quotes.

Speaker 1 (51:48):
I have at most three, but perfect are they? My
first's at page thirty eight, and it is Cherry being
a bitch. But you if you have four, you go first.

Speaker 2 (52:01):
Okay, my first one's on page thirteen. It's just one sentence.
I just liked it. Me and Darry just didn't dig
each other. Okay, okay, yeah.

Speaker 1 (52:11):
Because Darry has to be your father and your mother now,
you little bitch. Gosh, it's responsible for everything. Okay. Here
is Cherry explaining why it's hard to be rich. Rat
race is a perfect name for it. She said, we're
always going and going and going and never asking where
did you ever hear of having more than you wanted
so that you couldn't want anything else and then started
looking for something else to want. It seems like we're

(52:33):
always searching for something to satisfy us and never finding it.
Maybe if we could lose your cool, we could like okay, bitch, bitch.
Imagine telling a poor person like have you ever had that?

Speaker 2 (52:45):
Everything that I want? And then song like girl girl. Yeah,
my next one I was on page eighteen. This was
just like deep angsty, you know, teenager talk. I light
at myself all the time, but I never believe me.
Oh my god, I hate him so deep. He's not

(53:09):
like other boys. He knows poetry.

Speaker 1 (53:16):
What did I Marcus one for? Oh? I remember here's
some egg recipes?

Speaker 2 (53:25):
Oh, I think I have this one.

Speaker 1 (53:28):
We all like your eggs done differently. I like them hard.
Dary likes them in a bacon and tomato sandwich and soda.
Pop eats his with grape jelly.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (53:37):
They also only chocolate cake for breakfast. What this is fat?

Speaker 2 (53:40):
I actually have? So that's really funny because I have
that same page, I think, well, yeah, next, well in
that same paragraph, So it's page one oh five for me.
It's about the cake because they're always making cakes. They
always have cakes in the fridge basically, so I like
Day's cakes better. So don't Pop always puts too much

(54:02):
sugar in the icing. I don't see how he stands
jelly and eggs and chocolate cake all at once, but
he seems to like it because that's what he has
for breakfasts, is jelly, eggs and chocolate cake. What the fuck?

Speaker 1 (54:15):
Like? He also drinks it with chocolate milk, eats that
with chocolate milk. These kids need supervision.

Speaker 2 (54:22):
Right, that's just prooves. Now.

Speaker 1 (54:24):
How many sixteen and fourteen year old boys do you
know that know how to make it chocolate cake?

Speaker 2 (54:29):
Especially back then, I don't think they had them Betty
Crocker boxes.

Speaker 1 (54:34):
If they do there, it's a.

Speaker 2 (54:35):
Lot of money that they're spending on chocolate cake supplies.

Speaker 1 (54:39):
Well, cake supplies mean flour, sugar. The chocolate powder is
the most expensive far, Like eggs, there's not that crazy expensive,
but they're making frosting and everything, Like are these fucking
bakers out here? Like? What are these children doing?

Speaker 2 (54:51):
This is unrealistic the amount of sugar that they are
going through. Yeah, but like, goddamn guys, what.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
Didn't want from this one? Oh? I remember the acrobatics, Okay,
page one thirty five and two bits Second's head in
the door just as Darry went flying out of it.
Leaping as if he As he went off the steps,
Dariy turned a somersault in mid air, hit the ground
and bounced up before Soda could catch him. Well, two

(55:22):
bits are cheerfully cocking an eyebrow. I see we are
in prime condition for a rumble. Is ever very happy?

Speaker 2 (55:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (55:28):
Scream Soda, as he too did a flying sumrsault off
the steps. He flipped up to walk on his hands,
and they did a no hands cartweel across the yard
to be Darry's performance. They're all just doing okay. First
of all, no hand Cartwell it's called like a fuck?
Is he like a full out or something? That's not easy?

Speaker 2 (55:46):
Guys? He says that like Dary taught them all gymnastics
or someone. They all learned gymnastics.

Speaker 1 (55:52):
Who took the acrobatic class. One person took it acrobatic.

Speaker 2 (55:55):
I think it's and they just taught everyone else all
the fun little tricks, which like ballad I guess he.

Speaker 1 (56:00):
Flips in the back, does some backflips. We could all
do acrobatics because Darry had taken a course at the
y and then spend a whole summer teaching us everything
he learned on the grounds that might come handy in
a fight. No, these are like some of the stuff
they're doing is like pretty intense gymnastics, Like that's not
no hands. Cartwheel is what really got me because like
you are, okay, like.

Speaker 2 (56:23):
This is interesting. I know it's a big deal. I
know those are like I could never I could never
even do a cartwheel. But these are boys in the
fifties with nothing else to do, so to me it
doesn't seem so crazy.

Speaker 1 (56:36):
I know all these kids are just like and now
we all just flipped out of the house. What that
really that got to me?

Speaker 2 (56:42):
That took me out randomly? Never brought up again or anything.

Speaker 1 (56:46):
How do you know?

Speaker 2 (56:47):
Now?

Speaker 1 (56:47):
I know she's a teenager who wrote this. This makes
sense because she's like and then they all did backflips, and.

Speaker 2 (56:52):
I'm like, okay, I guess yeah, but much. My last
quote is about Dally dying page one fifty four. He said,
that's hard. He was dead before he hit the ground.
But I knew that that was what he wanted. Even

(57:13):
as the lot echoed with the cracks of shots, even
as I begged silently, please not him, not him, and
Johnny both, I knew he would be dead because Dally
Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what
he wanted.

Speaker 1 (57:25):
Oh my god, the ang I guess. I mean he
needed help psychologically. He just committed suicide.

Speaker 2 (57:33):
He did well like hardcore angst. It's just angst, Sydney. Well,
that guy's like twenty Move on, sor you can't relate.

Speaker 1 (57:42):
To angst, just like these kids.

Speaker 2 (57:45):
Jesus, he was a very normal teenager. She didn't have
freak out.

Speaker 1 (57:49):
These I wasn't trying to commit suicide by cop.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
No, I wasn't either.

Speaker 1 (57:53):
But anyways, my final thoughts don't love it. The way
they talk, annoying hate the dialogue. Didn't find it realistic.
Makes sense that it was written by a teen. Yeah,
if Pony was talking to me like that, I would
walk away. Simply could not handle it. He's trying to
be so deep, but you're not.

Speaker 2 (58:14):
You're not.

Speaker 1 (58:15):
You're fourteen and you've read one book. Move on. Yeah,
And like I get that, their children whatever, they annoy me.
Like I said the whole thing with darry dary Ley
gave up his entire future for his younger brothers when
his parents died, and Pony's over here acting like the
pie's the biggest victim. Darry's out there doing manually for jobs,
trying to just keep his younger brothers out of foster

(58:37):
care and making sure that Pony has the opportunities that
were taking from him and ponies. Like he doesn't even
like hug me enough. He's like not even nice to me.
But she's supporting you. Yeah, she's obnoxious. This guy sacrificed
everything for you when you're act here telling people he
hates you. Rude, Like this kid is, he's twenty, he
could have a much better life. You talk about like

(58:58):
how smart and talented ideas and his life sucks. Also
super obvious that these are white kids, because like none
of this would be okay for anybody who wasn't a
white kid.

Speaker 2 (59:07):
No, yeah, yeah, whatever, I agree. So I however, I
think I read this in high school. Maybe I know
I've read it before, but whatever, I knew like the
basic plot, but it was like not bad to reread.
I did cry, Unlike you, I didn't get it. It's

(59:28):
the angst. I love it.

Speaker 1 (59:29):
No one part of this seems sad to me.

Speaker 2 (59:31):
Also, you know I cry while watching cars sometimes, so like.

Speaker 1 (59:35):
Cars is betder than this. I mean, these kids truly
had it come in for Johnny. Johnny's life sucked, Like
I get Johnny. Okay, that wasn't surprising or anything like
he was he was gonna die. They called him a pet.
Jesus fairly human to them.

Speaker 2 (59:54):
This book also super short, very quick read, so that
was kind of fun. I hated that the there was
a dairy and a dally. I literally had to write
it down because I got so confused and I couldn't
remember which one was which for some reason whatever. There
was a lot of weird names in this book, though,
so I don't think I can be that mad. I Well,
like I said, I would love the more explanation for that,

(01:00:16):
and we're never gonna get it. But like whatever, I
didn't think this book was bad. I didn't hate it
like you did.

Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
So well. The explanation is that I was written by
a teenager girl who literally doesn't understand things, and.

Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
Sidney hates teenage girls. Confirmed.

Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
I feel like, yeah, if you published something ever when
I was sixteen and two would be bad.

Speaker 2 (01:00:35):
I'm sorry, Yeah, oh god, I can't. Yeah. Anyways, Yeah,
if y'all like that one, we have so many more.
You should tune in wherever you listen to podcasts. Give
them a listen. We've done other old books I don't know,
And while you're there, give us a little five star

(01:00:55):
review just for funzies.

Speaker 1 (01:00:58):
Yeah, next week we're reading a much more modern book,
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.

Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
It's also set in the fifties.

Speaker 1 (01:01:06):
It is, but you know what, this one's feminist.

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
Sounds science y, it's really. I really like it so far.

Speaker 1 (01:01:12):
I know the plot. I haven't started it yet, might
know what it is.

Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
It's Yeah, I wanted to read it because there's a
I think that's on Apple TV, so I can't watch
it because I don't have that. But there's a TV
show with Reelursen. I love her so much.

Speaker 1 (01:01:29):
I think it is on Apple, so I also cannot
watch it. And just.

Speaker 2 (01:01:36):
To the role too, I'm really sad. Whatever. Anyways, Yeah,
tune in for that next week. Whatever. You're not part of.

Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
The what let me finish my whole thing? Anyways? You
can find us on Instagram at book Call podcast, on
TikTok at vocal pod, and one a book WordPress dot com.

Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
Yeah, so thanks for listening.

Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
You're now part of the gang. I guess technic gang
is such a loose term for it.

Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
Our group of friends hanging out. You know, maybe just
a group of boys is called a gang. I don't know.
A group of girls is called a click perhaps, I
don't know. Whatever, No, it takes these back seats. That's
the point. You're in for life. Guys. You're jumped in.
You're not leaving till the most part.

Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
You would just move away, Well.

Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
We'll move with you. We'll show up. You're in it.
That's how gangs work.
