Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to book Cast, the place to be if you
want all the juicy insights from best selling books, but
you only have you know, minutes to spare.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
I'm Paul and I'm Sarah.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey everyone, and today's deep dive while we're taking a
look at the start of Emily Henry's Funny Story. Yeah,
so you know, you shared the book and some of
your initial thoughts, and we're on a mission here to
figure out, you know, what makes this a best seller.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Right from the get go, right from the get go.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
So, Sarah, when we jump into this opening of Funny Story, like,
what's that first thing that really grabs your attention?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I mean you're just like right there in it with
Daphne and her world is imploding. Yeah, her fiance Peter
breaks up with her. Okay, fine, but he's already moved on,
Oh no, with his childhood best friend Petra Oof.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Talk about it, double whammy. It's brutal, right, Yeah, it's
like the worst of the worst.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's like getting kicked when you're already down.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah. You think about Daphne, She's expecting this nice little
welcome home.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
You know, they've got that waning bay house.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Peter's b on this getaway and instead of open arms,
she gets apartment listings.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Talk about a moodkiller.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
It's so jarring, you know, it makes you wonder like
was anything in that relationship real?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
It really makes you question their whole foundation. Absolutely, And
poor Daphne, she's just left reeling. Yeah, like her entire
life plan just evaporated, poof gone. And I think that's
why this book is such a hit, you know, I
bet it taps into that fear we all have, like
what if everything changes in an instant?

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Oh yeah, everyone's been there in some way exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
It's like that universal fear of the rug being pulled
out from under you.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
So true.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
So where does Daphne even begin to pick up the
pieces after all this?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
You know, where does she land?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Well? She ends up in this tiny little apartment, okay,
and almost because they're both drowning in heartbreak, she connects
with her neighbor Miles. Noak.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Miles enters the scene exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
And here's the kicker. Get this, Uh oh, Miles is
also freshly heartbroke. No no, because guess what, Petra, the
new girlfriend was his ex?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Oh my gosh, it's all connected.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Talk about a tangled web, right.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
It's a small world and not in a good way.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Definitely not in good way.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
So we've got these two casualties of the same, you know,
romantic explosion. Yeah, what are your first impressions of Miles
when we meet him?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You know, he's dealing with it in a classic heartbroken
guy way. Okay, how so lasting that music Jamie O'Neill
specifically for those keeping tracks, And there's coconut rum involved.
Oh the coconut ruh, which you know, classic breakup fuel.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
It screams trying to drown his sorrows.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
It really does.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
It's relatable, you know. It's that raw, messy side of heartbreak.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Definitely maybe less composed than Daphne's initial shock, but still real.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Absolutely so. This shared misery it kind of throws them together, right,
it does.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
It's this instant bond born out of awkwardness and shared pain.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
It's like misery loves company exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
And there's this one scene that just kills me. Okay,
offers Daphne weed.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
And a rom com classic combo.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Right, it's like his way of saying, hey, we're in
this together.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah. Meanwhile, Peter's over there with his apartment.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Listings, so unhelpful, like.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
It really shows you the difference between these two guys.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yeah, Miles, even if he's a little awkward, at least
he's got some emotional awareness.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
He's trying, you know, right. It's that contrast that really
sets things up, and.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
It kind of goes to show you never know where
you'll find support.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Sometimes it's in the most unexpected places exactly.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
So on top of this whole mess, Daphne starts thinking about,
you know, relationships in general.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah, she has this moment of reflection about how temporary
everything feels, like nothing is forever exactly, and it resonated
with some of the stuff you were saying earlier too.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Right, like sometimes relationships are just chapters in our lives. Yeah,
they come and go, and that's okay, part of the
journey definitely.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
So beyond all this heartbreak and you know, emotional turmoil,
we start.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
To learn more about who Dafne and Miles are.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
You know, right. We get a peek into their lives,
Like what do they do all day? Well, Daphne works
as a children's librarian.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Oh that's sweet, right.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
You immediately picture her like surrounded by books and kids.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, someone nurturing and organized.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Exactly, maybe a little whimsical.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
I like it.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
And we see her dealing with these quirky library patrons.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Oh, I bet those are interesting.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
And then there's Ashley, or colleague, who is a bit much.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Let's say, sounds like a character.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Oh she is.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
And Miles what about him?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Well, he throws as a curve ball.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Okay, I'm intrigued.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
He works at a local winery, cherry.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Hill, a whinery. That's not what I was expecting.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I know, right, It's a total surprise.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Yeah, especially after Peter's vague descriptions.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah, Peter painted a very different picture.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
So we've got a librarian and a winery worker.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
It's an unexpected pairing, it really is. And their connection
takes a wild turn.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Okay, tell me more.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
They both have a really rough night.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, those happen, and.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
They end up at this bar called meat meat Locker,
meat Locker all caps.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Amazing name, I know, right. So they're at this.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Bar, they're doing shots with this biker named Gil.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Okay, things are escalating.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
And then out of nowhere, Miles just announces that Daphne
is the love of his life.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
Oh wow, who ran off with her fiance. That's a lie,
complete fabrication. But why it's a drunken grand gesture I
guess so totally over the top and ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
I can only imagine.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
But here's the thing. It leads to this crazy agreement.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
What do they agree to?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
They're going to RSVP. Yes to Peter and Petra's wedding.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Oh no, they did it.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Oh yes they did.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
That's a bold move.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
It's pure rom com gold.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
It really is like the ultimate act of revenge.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Or maybe just a drunken mistake, probably a bit of both.
Daphne immediately starts having second thoughts. Of course, the alcohol
wears off in reality sets it.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
It always does, but.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
That RSVP is out there in the world.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
And there's no taking it back.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
The damage is done.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
So what happens next?

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Well, Peter being Peter, he calls Daphne after getting the RSVP.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Of course he does, and.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Daphne, in a moment of pure panic, fueled by you know,
leftover alcohol and Miles' crazy declaration, she tells Peter that
she and Miles are dating.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Oh my gosh, she didn't, she did.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
It's the classic fake dating scenario.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
It's a recipe for disaster and a whole.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Lot of laughs.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
That's why we love her homecoms.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Right, Yeah, why you think that fake dating trope is
so popular?

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I think it forces characters into this close proximity. Right,
they have to act like they're.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
In love even if they're not, and.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
All that pretending can lead to some real feelings.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
The lines get blurred, exactly.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
It's a great way to explore those what ifs.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, and how people change when they're trying to be
someone else.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
So what else is going on in this early stage
of their you know, relationship? Right?

Speaker 3 (06:53):
It's all very much in quotes.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Social media gets involved.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Oh boy, here we go.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Daphne posts this kind of suggestive pick with Miles.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
I bet Peter loved that.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
I'm sure didn't go unnoticed.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
So why do you think she did it?

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Maybe to provoke Peter, seems likely, or maybe to convince
herself or the world. It's a whole performative aspect of
social media. Right.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
We're always punning on a.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Show, especially after a breakup.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
It's like a public declaration of I'm fine.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Even if you're totally not fine.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
And on top of all this, we get a glimpse
into Daphne's family.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, her mom seems really close, uh huh, but her
dad's more distant, Okay, and those relationships clearly shape who
Daphne is.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Right, It's all part of her backstory.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
And how she reacts to all this craziness.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
It's fascinating how all these pieces come together.
