Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Bookcast, where we bring you best sellers in minix.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
I love that tagline, bestsellers in minutes. It's so catchy.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You know, we try. Yeah, I am ready to take
a deep dive into wild Side by Elsie Silver. Okay,
the third book in this rose Hill series. And you
shared some excerpts with me. Yes, And let me tell
you something. This book is. Oh, it's everywhere, it's all
over the place.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
An obsession, I mean an obsession, a total obsession.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Now, just so you know, these excerpts that you gave me,
they do have some content warnings. Okay. There are references
to addiction and drug use, death by overdose, and they
touch on themes of child welfare and abuse and neglect. Now,
it is important to note that all of these are
off page and the author actually consulted with a lawyer

(00:48):
and a clinical therapist. Oh wow, to make sure that
she was handling these sensitive areas appropriately.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, that's great.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
So our mission today is to figure out what makes
this book so popular. Okay, Why are people so obsessed
with this book?

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, let's get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Why are these initial chapters so gripping? Okay, we're going
to unpack the main characters, the conflicts, all that, let's
do it. Okay, let's start with that initial encounter. Okay,
when Tabitha, the sister of the new tenant, arrives to
speak with Ris.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yes, she barges in pretty much.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Oh, she barges in. She is not messing around. No,
she's very assertive confrontational. Oh, absolutely, almost confrontational.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, I mean she basically tells him I need to
talk to you now while my sister's not here, right.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
And Riss is like, whoa, yeah, he's totally thrown.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, he's thrown.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I mean, this is not what he expected.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
This is not what he expected at all.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
No, he wanted a quiet tenant, someone unobtrusive, and he
gets Tabitha.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
And he gets Tabitha who is anything but but even
with that tension, Yes, did you send some chemistry?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Oh my gosh, yes, right away, that mutual once over?

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Oh yeah, that look they give each other, are so
aware of each other?

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yes, and it makes you think, is there more to
this than just this initial conflict.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
There's something simmering beneath the surface, for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yes, And I was surprised by how upfront Tabitha is.
Oh yeah, about her sister struggles with prescription drugs.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Right away lays down the law like these are not
allowed in the house. She is so protective of Erica.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, I mean she says, my sister is charming and beautiful,
and she's finally back on track. But then she says,
never say never, right, and you know there's a history there.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
You know there's a history.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
There is not the first time that she's had to
protect her sister.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
And then we get that glimpse into the past, yes,
with the flashback to when Tabitha was desperately searching.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
For her sister, Yes, during those housing crises.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
And the places that she looked.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
It's just heartbreaking.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
The hospitals, the police detachment, to shelter, the shelter under
a bridge.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
A campground.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
I mean, you really get a sense of how vulnerable
Erica was, yes, and how terrified Tabitha.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Was, and you can feel that weight that she carries with.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Her and that promise she made never again, never again.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I'm never going to let her end up like that.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
And so when she finds out that Reese is somehow.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Involved, oh, she loses it.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
She is furious.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
It's like this protective rage takes over.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
And there's this mystery, yes, about how Erica ended up
at this party.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
With this guy. No one knows who he is.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
And Tabitha immediately blames Reese.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Of course, right, He's the one who disrupted Erica's life.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Right, got her off track, right. And then when Erica dies,
Oh my gosh, I mean, the rage must be just.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Overwhelming, overwhelming, and she wants revenge. Yes, he wants revenge,
but she has to take care of Milo.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
She has Milo to think about.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, he needs her now more than ever.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
She's dealing with the grief and the anger, and.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
She has three days to pack up Erica's entire life.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
And then we get that confrontation where Reese is insisting
on meeting Erica's permissions.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Noah, it's like so cold.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
To enter the unit.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah, she ureaucratic in the face of such grief, right,
you know.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
And for Tabitha, who's already on edge, of course, it
just seems so insensitive.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, it makes her even more defensive. And then she
just breaks down. She breaks down, tells him that Eric
is dead.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yes, and that she's the Mexican.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
It's just raw emotion, raw emotion pouring out of her.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
You'd think that that would soften Rice up a little bit,
I know.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
But he doesn't.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
But he doesn't.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
He actually gets physical.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yes, when she tries to slam the door, stops her,
stops her, puts his foot in the door.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
So much tension, Yes, physical tension on top of the
emotional tension.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
And we see Tabitha packing. Yeah, it's just chaos.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
She's exhausted, she's grieving.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
And then they have this awkward conversation.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
About Erica's things, and.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
You can tell that Tabitha is.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Just misinterpreting everything.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Race says, yes, she thinks he's blaming her.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, and she's already feeling guilty.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yes, the what ifs?

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Who I have done more right? I have saved her?

Speaker 1 (04:56):
And when you hear about all that Tabitha did for
Erica and Milo.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
I know she was there for them every step of.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
The way, the visits, the childcare, working her schedule around them.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Taking on debt to help them pay for treatment.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
She was their lifeline. It's amazing, It is amazing. And
you can understand that resentment, the.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Feeling of being taken advantage of.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
But also that guilt. Yeah, and then Reese drops the
bomb about the will about Erica's will.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Tabitha is like why, Yeah, she doesn't believe it doesn't
make sense Erica having a will, why would she have
a will? And she's suspicious, suspicious of Reese of course,
relationship with her exactly, why would she leave anything to him?

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Right? What's he up to?

Speaker 1 (05:36):
And their reactions to Eric's death so different. Tabith is
just raw grief. Yeah, Reeves seems so calm.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
I know she thinks he's cold, that he doesn't even care.
And then there's that sound, the laughter, Yes, a woman
and a.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Child coming from Rees's property.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
It just changes everything, It really does makes you wonder
what's going on?

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yes, and then we meet.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Milo, Oh, sweet Mia, and that interaction.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
With the caterpillar so cute shows their bond.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah, they're close.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
But then Milo runs to Rees.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
And jumps right into his arms.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yes, like they have this special connection. I know.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Tabitha's stunned.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
She is stunned.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
It's like everything she thought she knew about Rees's wrong.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
And it makes you wonder what did Erica tell her
about race?

Speaker 2 (06:20):
And why is Milo so comfortable with him?

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right? And Tabitha has her own history with the foster system, right,
so she is determined to protect Milo.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
She doesn't want him going through that.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Oh, and then her parents show up at Rees's house.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
I know, it's a curve ball.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
It's like, what are they doing here?

Speaker 1 (06:37):
But they're all concerned about Milo.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah, despite all the tension.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Right, maybe they can work together.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
It's possible.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
And then Tricksy shows up. Yeah, someone impartial who emphasizes
the importance of putting Milo first.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
He needs safety and love.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yes, a community, a team.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Right, everyone working together for him.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
And then Reese reveals that he can only stay in
rose Hill for a limited time because of his work,
and Tabitha's like, what do you do? Yeah, she's curious,
very curious, and Reese is reluctant to talk.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
About it, like he's hiding something, right.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
And he says the entertainment industry.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
That's so vague, so vague, and Tabitha immediately jumps to porn.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I know, I laughed out loud when I read.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
That, me too. It's funny but also kind of.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Sad, right, because it shows how little they know each.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Other, yeah, and how much is left unset.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
And Reese is having his own internal struggle with.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Being Milo's guardian, right, he doesn't understand why Erica shows him, and.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
You can feel that attraction between them simmering under.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
The surface even though they're fighting.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Tabitha's anger seems like a defense mechanism.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, and Reese offers to follow her home, which is.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
A bold move, very bold, but it shows he's interested.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Oh yeah, he's definitely Andrews.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
And we see Tabitha replaying.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
That night in her head.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Yeah, because she had prevented Erica's death.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
That guilt is eating her alive and.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
They're essentially strangers.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Thrown into this intense situation.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Then West shows up the neighbor.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah. He is a nice contrast to Rees.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yes, And we get to see Tabitha at work in
the kitchen. Yes, she's a chef and she's tough, demanding.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
He runs a tight.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Ship, but she's also attracted to Ree's.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
She compares him to a lion playing with its food.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Which is such a great image it is It captures
their dynamic perfectly.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
The power and balance, the danger. And then there's the
banter with Scottie.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Yeah, he's a flirt, he is, and Tabitha and Reees
are teasing.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Each other, calling him mean.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
It's like a little crack in the ice.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yes, maybe they can be playful maybe, but Tabitha is
determined to figure Reees out.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah. She made a promise to Erica to look after
Milo and she's going to keep it.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Even if she's falling for Reese. And Reese is starting
to realize that he wants this.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
He wants to be a part of Milo's life.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
He wants to be in rose Hill.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
That's a big shift. It is from obligation to actually
wanting it.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
And they agree that he can stay in.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
The for now, for now, a temporary truth.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
And they're starting to show each other consideration.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Like Tabitha leaving him food.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
And Rees knowing that she has a gun.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
Yeah, it's like they're starting to trust each other just
a little.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Just a little.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Well, this deep Dies into wild Side.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Has been a whirlwind. It has grief, suspicion, attraction, it's
all there and that ending. I know what's going to
happen next.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
I can't wait to find out me neither. You can
see that there's going to be a relationship.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Between Tabitha and Reees. Yes, but it's going to be complicated,
very complicated. So many obstacles and so many questions, like
what did Erica really feel about Rees?

Speaker 1 (09:39):
And what does he really do for work?

Speaker 2 (09:41):
And can they put their differences aside? For Milo?

Speaker 1 (09:44):
This book has it all. It does compelling characters, high stakes,
and a romance that will keep you guessing.
