replaced that file with the correct one. So about two thirds of the audience

(04:15):
thirteen care of Star Times. Ineed your help desperately. Johnny Tide was
released from the state penitentiary this morningwith murder in his heart. I don't
know any of the details, butI'm sure that he'll be back here in
Watertown by nightfall at the latest. If you mean what you say in your
ad in the Star Times, beat the watertron to Monday in the Star

(04:43):
Times, be at the waterfront tonightand stop him. Remember if you fail,
Johnny Tide will kill or be killedby morning, and that would be
wrong because there's lots of good inhim. I know I love him.
Janice read, Yeah, that's theway it started, just a girl worrying
about a boy. But before itwas all over, a lot of people

(05:05):
were worrying about that boy. Theyhad to if they wanted to live.
And now back to Batch thirteen andDan Holiday's newest adventure designed for danger apris

(05:31):
Ntuliday, an ex convict on theprowl in the tough attaching of the city
that part of the city doesn't getthe carriage trade. As the expression goes,
well do we accept the challenge Susie'swe Oh hey, I'm on your
secretary, mister Holiday, And Iwas using the editorial wave Susie. Oh
well, then netcase, mister Holiday. I don't know what to day likely

(05:53):
I'm trumped, Susie. The wordis stumped. The word is stumped.
But maybe you've got something what Idon't know, I'll tell you what.
Suppose I get down to Watertown andnose around the why, Oh, I
don't know, Maybe to see what'sdoing. It was called Watertown not because

(06:14):
it was a separate city, butbecause it was a separate and different order
from the rest of the town. But to night there was none of the
usual routing noises, none at all. Watertown was quiet, too quiet.
I could feel a peculiar tension inthe airs. I walked as though Watertown
was waiting for something to blow up. The people I saw hurried along,

(06:35):
vanished in the dark doorways and shutteredhouses, afraid a place like Watertown lives
within itself, and those travels fast. Then I heard two men talking.
I stopped, stopped in the shadowsand listened. I know what I'm talking
about. Fatty Tide was sprung thismorning. He headed straight for here.
Oh maybe he ain't no Watertown.Maybe be afraid to come back, Oh,

(06:57):
Johnny Tide, afraid of what ofyou? Old Fatty Ralston. You
know he ain't afraid. He'd forgotshut up you talk back. I had
to be afraid of Johnny. Don'tyou have to do? You guys make
me sick? That punk's head itfor someplace else. He ain't coming back
to Watercown just the same. IfI was you, Fatty, I'd pulled
a blanket on me and hold upsome go on, beat it, get
out of here. You ain't afraidmuch, oh, hold not one.

(07:19):
He ain't afraid of Johnny Tide.Hey, Hey, why not, Fatty?
Why should you be? Who areyou? What are you doing here?
I just wanted to ask you aquestion, Fatty. You don't know
me. I don't know you. That's fine, and run along in Mind
your own business, mister. I'vegot business here. I just want to
know who is Johnny Tide? Andwho had your ears open? Didn't you?

(07:40):
Yeah? Wide open? So youwant to know how Johnny Tide?
That's right? Okay, you wantit here? It is, I'll say
that's for Fatty. He was quickwith his fist. By the time I
got my breath back, I sawhis three hundred pounds disappearing around a corner.
So if I wanted to know anythingabout Johnny Tide, Fatty was the

(08:01):
boy to ask. I got upand followed saw him duck into a place
that had a sign above it Patty'sPool. I stepped inside, stepped into
a dark corner and waited, allright, everybody, we're out. I'm
closing up for the night you hidme. Nobody asked me nothing now that

(08:24):
ought to make any of it?All right? Out block turning in early?
Aren't you? Fatty? Are youagain? Listens to you? I
don't like the way you teach. Now you're going to tell me about Johnny
Tide? Was I what makes youthink that I had an idea? You

(08:45):
might? It's another idea with details, starting with this que bowl. It's
your window, Fatty, Stay awayfrom me. I ask you a question
outside. I didn't like the wayyou answered it. You were cough,
no, stay with from me,Stay away. I don't sure. But
who is Johnny Tide? The punkkid? It's all? Anybody continue that.

(09:09):
I like the way you tell it. Come on, he's up with
you. That's where you are.I know it is. It was my
stomach out sigment. Look, Tide'sa punk kid, just finished the five
years stretch, was sticking up byplace this place. Yeah, yeah,
he robbed me a four grand, four thousand dollars. Try it again,
Fatty, I doubt if you everhad four thousand dollars in this place.

(09:31):
That's what it was. Why areyou afraid he robbed you and served time?
Why should you be afraid? Now? Shity, get me, let
me go. Sorry, Fatty, but your story doesn't make sense in the
first place. Like I said, you never had four thousand dollars knock in
this place? You're smart? Ain'tyou? Just medium? But I can
smell a bad story. It's juststake in this anyway? Who are you?

(09:52):
An hour ago, I was justa curious bystander. I wanted to
know who and what is Johnny Tide. But I took up buch in the
mid section. And now you're tellingme a lie. So that makes me
more than curious. It gives mea personal interest. Yeah, let me
go when I tell you that, all the pens go on? All right?
All right? I want to tellyou because I got to get out
of here before Johnny gets here.Oh so there is a reason for you

(10:15):
to be afraid of him. Maybe, But Johnny was framed Rick Martin,
Rick Martin, the Rick Martin,Yeah, big shot or so Watertown.
He gave me four grand then hetold Johnny I was a pushover for a
stick up, and Rick Martin alsotold the police, yeah he did.
Johnny was framed. Like I said, why should Rick Martin want to put
that frame around Johnny Tide? BecauseRick liked the girl, so did Johnny.

(10:37):
So Rick took the easy way inlove and war. Let me go,
will I told you everything. Igot to get out of here before
Johnny comes. You're in on theframe. Maybe not exactly, but Johnny
won't believe I wasn't, you know, fatty somehow I can't blame Johnny for
that. How did Johnny find outhe was framed? Somebody talked somebody that
don't like Rick Martin. Huh?Now is the girl Joannis read? Yeah,

(10:58):
Yeah, that's Johnny. I thinkshe was in on the frame.
Tone now, please let me go. I gotta get out. Yeah,
got your fenny, you can gonow. I gotta go far away because
Johnny Tide will go for Rick Martinand then me and then Janice Red.
So that was it. Johnny Tidewas coming back to Suddle Oh scores.

(11:20):
But where was he? How couldI help? I was thinking about it
from stop stop yo fu yo hoholdlove stop. He did it? He
broke my showcase window. That nogood Johnny Tide. I saw him.
He broke my window and took agun. So now Johnny Tide had a

(11:46):
gun. He was close, veryclose, but it was also out of
my hands and into the hot littlehands of Lieutenant Clint. I look holiday.
I know the Tide was released fromprison this morning. I know that
he's in Watertown tonight. I knowhe in tends to kill Rick Martin before
morning. But I also know thatall of this, including that pawn shop
he just knocked over, there's noneof your business. How do I make
myself clear? Yes, you do? Well? Before I go back to

(12:07):
my typewriter, one question, whatdo you know about a girl named Janice
Reid? Very little? Only thatshe's a single rope with the blue Chip,
water Town's most exclusive nightclub. Notanything else to any boy, No
nothing else, Lieutenant good night.Maybe I made a mistake when I asked

(12:28):
Cling about Janice Reid, because upuntil then I was convinced that the lieutenant
was right. I didn't belong inthis miss But now, well, I
couldn't just step out and forget thewhole thing, not without talking to the
girl. Anyway, I got atable at the blue Chip without too much
trouble, and ten months later Janisjoined me. She was younger, pretty

(12:50):
much more upset than I had expected. Mister Holliday, what have you found
out about Johnny? Well, rumorhas it that he intends to commit a
few murders tonight, so incidentally you'reon his list. Don't believe that.
Look, mister Holiday, I knowJohnny. I grew up with him right
here in this neighborhood by Johnny andI and Tyler Bennett were inseparable. Please,
mister Holiday, you've got to believeme. Maybe I do with Jennis.

(13:13):
Let's start off slowly. First ofall, who's Tyler Bennett? My
boss? He owned this place. He and Johnny and I used to play
together as kids. Oh we evenhad a secret clubhouse under the pier,
all that kind of stuff. Andhow Johnny loved you know that kid used
to climb the old water tower overthe clubhouse every day and pretend to sighte

(13:33):
pirate ships on the horizon. He'dget mad if we said they were just
barges, which has up to watchJanis. Johnny was never really a bad
boy, mister Holiday. He justcraved excitement, that's all. Well,
what about Rick Martin? How doyou explain that Rick meant action and fast

(13:54):
money and Johnny liked both. Hewas young and he made a mistake,
but he's paid for it. Heserved time, don't you see, mister
Holiday. He needs help. Heneeds it badly. He's certainly got a
lot of faith in in Janis. But what about you and Rick Martin go
out with me once in a while. I have to to keep my job,

(14:15):
don't forget Rick Martin runs water timer. That might be hard to explain
to Johnny time. No, itwon't believe me, mister Holiday. If
you can find him, you cantalk sense into him. I know them.
Oh, I'm not so sure,but you'll try. Okay, I'll
try. Oh, thank you, thank you so much. Find me,
but you're on in a minute.Janis all right, Tyler, Oh,

(14:37):
mister Bennett, mister Holliday, excuseme, I'll only be a few nut.
Janis was telling me how you twogrew up with Johnny tiede. Mister
Bennett. Oh, have any ideawhere he might be? Well? If
I did, I'd go directly tothe police for the information. Johnny was
a good kid once, but thatwas a long time ago. He's dangerous
Now he's very dangerous. Janis won'tby then. I know she was in

(15:00):
love with him five years ago.She can't believe he's changed. But mark
my word, Johnny Tide will killbefore this night is over. I only
hope he doesn't get to Janis. When I left the Blue Chip, I
knew that, in spite of bothKling and Tyler Bennett, I was on
Janis's side. Now. My onlyproblem was to stop Johnny Tide if I

(15:22):
could find him. I walked aroundaimlessly for the better part of an hour
before I got a break. Istopped to look up at the sky,
and I found myself staring at theremains of a rot of water Tower.
For a moment, the jumble ofold boards didn't mean a thing, but
suddenly it struck home. Johnny Tideused to play Pyre them at WaterTower,

(15:45):
and there was a secret clubhouse below. It could be just the spot for
a hide hour, I felt myway through the blackness. When you move
one more stepson and I blow yourhead off. Who are you? My
name's Holiday, down Holiday. I'mnot a policeman. I don't work for
Rick Martin. You're open, isokay, I'll keep talking all right?
Here it is you're Johnny Tide.I maybe keep talking. Well, Johnny

(16:08):
Tide, you're the world's biggest sucker. Yeah, he wasige five precious years
in prison, and on your firstday out with a clean slate, you're
going to do a jamine either Imean the chair or a pine box.
And what's that to you? Personally? Nothing? But I'm around because a
friend of mine believes in you,a girl named Janice Reed. Janice,
you've seen her. That's why I'mhere leaning against that forty five in your

(16:30):
hand side. Why don't you getsmart that girls in love with you?
What about Rick Martin? I'll forgethim sooner or later. The cops will
catch up with Martin. I'll puthim away for keeps sure. Sure.
Meanwhile, what's to keep Martin hisboys from coming after me? I'll do
what I care about that? Butthe play it's safe. Why don't you
get out of town, away fromhere for a while. What's that holiday

(16:52):
holiday? If this is a trap, you'll never leave here alive, then
we've got to do because that wasprobably a straight cat. Listen to me,
Johnny, do what I say willyou forget Rick Martin, get out
of town for your own sake andfor Janie. Yeah, yeah, sure,
forget the whole thing. Forget Iwas framed and went up for five
years. That's a long time,Holiday, an awful long time, I

(17:14):
know it, Johnny. But it'sdone now. Yeah, it done me
with a record, you can't wipethat away. Suppose suppose we fix it
so that everybody finds out about theframe. How well, first give me
that gun, then get out oftown and let the police take care of
Rick Martin. Hardy Ralston can bemade to talk how he talked to me
because he was afraid of you. He'll talk, Johnny. When he does,

(17:37):
that record of yours will be wipedoff. Come on, what do
you say? Well, here,I'm a set, a goal plated fourteen
carrot set. But but here, now that's a good boy. I'll go
someplace where you'll be out of theway. You lead us to the police.
Sure, but so help me,holiday. If I get another loop

(18:00):
thrown around me, if anything slips, Johnny tied, it'll be back for
you. When I left, Johnny, I was sure everything was going to
be all Ryan. I put hisgun in my pocket and started up the
street for Rick Martin's place. Iwanted to be sure that Martin would let
Johnny get out of town under hisown flower. I took a short cut

(18:22):
through an alley, brought her.How flush can I get? I hadn't
gone ten feet when I heard footstepsbehind me. I tried to duck,
but I wasn't quick enough. Uh, mister Dan Holiday in his usual possession

(18:45):
there for sticking out his neck.Go on, see if he can get
up. Claim to do something aboutthese buildings around here. They've fallen people.
Yeah, under these slug You knowI gathered that. That isn't all
you gathered. What are you talkingabout? Three guesses? Just take only
one, though you'll need. Stilldon't know what you're talking about. But

(19:06):
I know one thing, and thatis don't worry about Johnny Tide anymore.
I had to talk with him.So you had talked Johnny Tide and of
being a good boy. You letthat fast talking little Holiday while you were
lying here asleep. Tide got toRick Martin and killed him. And now

(19:30):
back to Design for Danger. AnotherBox thirteen adventure with Alan Lad and Damn
Holiday. The moment Lieutenant Cling toldme that Rick Martin was shot to death.
I plunged my hand into my pocketfor the forty five. I'd take
it from Johnny Tide, but itwas gone. Looking for this maybe the

(19:51):
gun, Yeah, we found itmixed with Martin body. Holiday. You've
been taken in by a fast talkingpunk. Anyway you look at it,
your name spells sucker. Ah,you're right. Johnny tired, sang a
pretty lullaby and I went to sleep. I get this claim before the sun
comes up. I'm going to plantRick Martin's murder right in your lap.

(20:15):
Well, sunrise was only six hoursaway, and that man I had them
fast. I remember Fatty's warning thathe and Janis Reed would be next if
Johnny Tide ever got to Rick.So I lost no time in getting to
the girl's apartment. What, misterHoliday, what are you doing here?

(20:36):
Rick Martin has just been murdered,Janis. I know. Tyler Bennett called
me a few minutes after it's happened. Look, Jannis, that Johnny's off
on a killing spree and you andFatty are next in line. No,
no, I don't believe that Johnnyisn't a killer. Rick Martin wouldn't see
it. That way, Janis Ilisten to me. I want you to
lock this place up tight and stannto cover, but I can't. I've

(20:56):
got to be back at the clubfor the late show. Call Tyler Benny
when it's time. You'll take careof you. Where are you going to
find three hundred pounds named Fatty Ralston? It cost me a fifty dollars bill
and a lot of leg work, but I finally located Fatty out on an
old oil barge anchored off the endof a deserted pier. I took off
my shoes, stepped to the waist, and quietly swam out to the barns.

(21:18):
Once on deck, I could hearthe voices of two men coming from
the cabin. One of them wasFatty. I couldn't see the other man.
I edged closer and then I bangedagainst the steel drum and the noise
it made shouted the silence. Lightin the cabin went out. Who's that?
Come on, who is it?It's an old friend, Fatty?

(21:41):
Huh you again? Let's go inthe cabin, Fatty arm I'm a little
wet sure why man, come on? Light the lamp? Anything to oblige?
See better now? Not yet.Who is with you? Nobody?

(22:03):
Where's Johnny Tide? I said,where's Johnny? He ain't here. Don't
get me that. Where did youlook around? Put on that gun first?
You're mixed up, feller. Igive the orders. I got the
gun. That's fine. Give mea cigarette. Will you smoke? No,
not even Egyptian cigarettes. This cabinis stick with smoke from Egyptian cigarettes.

(22:29):
Maybe you better go now, handme that towel, Batty. I'm
a little chilly here. Thanks.Call that gun, Patty to get breaking.
Stop that gun, all right, move back? Okay, Now,
I give the orders. I've gotthe guns. Don't do don't please,

(22:53):
Oh I'm not. I'm going tostand perfectly still and listen to you talk.
Okay, okay. Whoever fired thoseshots couldn't have miss Fanny, and
whoever it was got off the bargeand into the boat that was tied on
the opposite side. I ran overit. I slipped once on the oil

(23:15):
covered deck, and the motor boatmade on the shore. I had to
stand and watch Johnny tied get away, get away after killing Fatty. And
that made two down and one togo. And the one was Janus Reed.
I swam back, slipped into mythings, got to a phone and

(23:37):
told the police about Fatty. ThenI headed for Janus Reid's apartment. It
was dark, deserted. I foundan unlocked window and got inside, and
I had a sickening feeling that Iwas just one step behind Johnny Tied in
his gun. Then I knew itwasn't Jannus. She'd use a key.
I moved to the door quietly.Get your hands off me holiday. Why,

(24:02):
mister Bennett, I'm sorry, Ithought you were Johnny Tide. Obviously,
I came to take Janis to theclub. Where is she? I
don't know. I was just goingthrough the place when I heard you at
the door. Here, I'll switchon the lighter. Come on, let's
look in the bedroom. Well, there's nobody in here. I guess I'm

(24:25):
too late again. Wait a minute. This memo pad? Here? Another
phone? What about it? Whatdoes it say? It's written with an
eyebrow pencil? Here forty two atone? Sure that girl's just crazy enough
to keep a rendezvous with Johnny Tied. What time is it now? Ten
after one? Why? What areyou going to do? Maybe three is
a crowd, mister Bennett. ButI'm going to be there when Johnny Tied

(24:48):
and Janis get together. I'm goingto what is it holiday? What are
you staring at? Look they're onthe rock. They'll smudges. That's oil.
I don't follow you. What doesit mean the tide's been here already.
Those are his tracks? What yes? You see? He was out
on the oil barge an hour agoand the deck was slick with that stuff.
I know I stepped myself. Well, then couldn't those be your footprints?

(25:11):
No, I left my shoes onthe pier. I swam out.
But why would Johnny make an appointmentwith Janis and still come up here?
I don't know. Only Johnny cananswer that, just like he can tell
me where he gets those smelly Egyptiancigarettes he smokes. I took a cab
to in the block of Pier fortytwo. Then I got out walked quiet

(25:34):
because the bond of the spot Januswas already standing in the soft light of
a steet lamp waiting. So Iran back to the phone and called Lieutenant
Clean. But the girl set uplike a clay pigeon. I didn't want
to take any chances, and Igot back to Janis It was one thirty
on the button, and a secondlater a man stepped from the side door
of a warehouse. It was JohnnyTide. I moved closer as Johnny went

(25:57):
up to Janis. Johnny, JohnnyDarling, Hello, Janis. Oh Johnny,
it's been such a long time.Yeah, hey have five years,
an awful long time, Janis. What's the matter, Johnny? Aren't you
glad to see me? Sure?Sure, awful glad. Janis awful glad.

(26:18):
But what's the matter, Johnny? Why are you looking like that?
All right? I'm just trying tofigure out something. Oh, never mind,
now, Johnny, look you've gotto get away. Wait a minute,
listen, cops. He did itagain, didn't you. I don't
know. I was going to giveyou a chest to explain. Holo,
Johnny holiday you she didn't call apolice side it. I'll get both of
your life be Jo Doway. Don'trun away by your clain. Where is

(26:48):
he? You run into the warehouse? Okay? What are you run that
warehouse? By? Fair? Don'tlet him alone? Let him alone?
Okay, boy, let's go.I'm going with acclaim. It's no use,
Johnny, the polica here. Youlet kid, come on, give

(27:12):
up. Me and the law justdon't seem to get along. But Johnny,
it's your only chance. Will yougive up? Answer me? Johnny?
Look you heard Dan's just in theshoulder. Morning. There he is
up there on that rapped Kennedy youlike shouting up there there? No,

(27:33):
don't clan, don't you crazy Holiday? Not quite Kennedy showing your light behind
you up there? Hire, therethere's your man cling. Who is that
Holiday? That lieutenant is the manwho killed Rick Martin and Fatty Ralston and
tried to frame Johnny Tide for thewhole thing. The name is Tyler Bennett.

(28:00):
Well, how are they? Howare you this morning? Oh?
Pretty good? Clean? The docsays, I'll be out in a couple
of days. Good, I'll likeyou. Figured the whole thing was a
scheme of Bennett's to kill Rick Martinand take over his number one man in
watertime. Yeah, and with tiredframe for the murdering, Tyler Bennet would
also have had a clear field withJennis. He was the one to knocks
you out just before Rick Martin wasshot. He huh. He must have

(28:21):
followed me from the blue Chip toJohnny's hideout, or he heard me talk
Johnny out of his gun. Fromthere on out, he was in the
driver's seat. But I still don'tsee why Bennett killed Fatty out on the
barge. Because Fatty was Bennett's sidekickingthis frame, and when it looked as
though you might get the truth outof him, Bennett was forced to shoot
one of you. You were luckyFaddy made a better target. But now
I have got one for you,the jackpot question. When you were in

(28:45):
the warehouse, how did you knowthat Johnny Tide was innocent? I found
out out the hard way. Yousee, I was facing Johnny when I
was shot in the back. Shemissed your holiday. You certainly had a

(29:11):
long night in water Can. Butjust one thing I don't understand, And
what's that, Susie. Why didKayla been at follow you down to the
pier. He had to because ofthe oily footprints in Jannis's apartment. You
see, once I got to JohnnyTide and found out that he didn't have
oil on his shoes, I wouldhave realized the footprints couldn't have come from
anyone but Tyler himself. Besides,I would have also found out that Johnny

(29:33):
didn't smoke Egyptian cigarettes. But whatabout Johnny. Now I always on probation
for stealing the gun. Everyone knowshe was praying for the other deal.
You know what you holiday? Iwonder if I would have got of that
Egyptian cigarette thing. Nope, Iguess I wouldn't. Why not because I
don't know a single Egyptian. Ohgood night, Susie that week, same

(29:57):

(30:21):
thirteen is a Mainfair production from Hollywood. Watch bar Alan Ladd in his latest
paramount picture, Welcome Back. Youknow. The one thing I don't like
about Box thirteen is the lack ofcredits for the guest voice actors. I
know I've heard the actor who didFatty before. I know I've heard that

(30:47):
voice, and it's probably a voiceI've heard multiple times, but I cannot,
for the life of me identify thatat that point. And of course,
a few months back there was theepisode to Box thirteen that someone thought
Jack Webb might have appeared in,so I know I'm gonna remember who that
voice was eventually, but maybe notuntil you somebody emails me. This one

(31:11):
was a nice mystery story. Wegot to see Lieutenant Kling and he hasn't
been in as many of the laterepisodes here. And I also think that
they really kept with the idea thatit was the kid who just gotten out
of jail who was behind this, and then just turned really suddenly. It

(31:33):
was almost so fast at Major headSwim, how swiftly the story changed to
know he's not the guy, SoI can definitely appreciate the skill in telling
that story. All Right, well, I'm gonna grab a review off of
iTunes, and we actually got twoon the same day, after being about
a month plus since our last one. This one comes from Blue Sunflower,

(31:57):
a long time old time radio fanwho grew up after the shows had left
the air. I remember when theonly way to listen to these shows was
to tune in the occasional late nightbroadcast to order LP records from obscure catalog
companies. Having them available through iTunesis pure pleasure. If these podcasts don't
actually make your chores go faster, they certainly make them more enjoyable. Shelly

(32:20):
appreciate Adam's approach, his attention todetail and efforts to broadcast all of the
episodes of a given program and intheir correct order make his podcast. I
also subscribe to Dragnet in Superman andAndrew's Daily Western's my favorite. Well,
thank you so much, and reallywe've come a long way in the old
time radio technology, and he's absolutelyright. It used to be that old

(32:45):
time radio was just confined really toeither you know, to either late night
broadcast. The first time I everheard old time radio, it was actually
on cassette types that my parents gotfrom the store, and it was a
bunch of comedies. But now withthe Internet, we're able to put so

(33:06):
much of the knowledge and the recordsof these great shows, and so I'm
grateful to everybody who's helped bring themthere. And a lot of this is
what we're doing right now is acumination, accumulation of a lot of people trading
tapes, building libraries and sharing theirtheir favorite stories with one another, and

(33:30):
then going on to newsgroups, travelingthrough the internet over to archive dot org,
in to other sites where we havefound this and right available to your
iTunes. We're just kind of theend of the line on this, so
grateful to everybody who's made this allpossible. All right, Well, we
will be back tomorrow with our episodeof Jeff Reagan. Got a comment,

(33:52):
