care of the Star Times. Iffifty thousand dollars is of any interest
to you, come to see me. If it's adventure you want, this
is it because I want you tokill me at present. My address a
seven fifty six South Marvin Boulevard. Please come along. Don't tell anyone.
(02:24):
My address is seven six South MarbinBoulevard. Please come along, and don't
tell anyone about this letter. SimonAndrews. The letter was dated two days
before I received it. And thiswas one time I wish sleet or snow
or winds or anything had delayed theSwift Currier on his route. And now
(03:05):
back to Box thirteen and Dan Holiday'slatest adventure, Killer at Large. But
this was written two days ago.Mister Holiday, I know it's Susie,
and you were out of town,so I couldn't get in touch with you.
I wouldn't made any difference. Icouldn't have made it back in time
anyway. See, you're not goingto follow up this letter. Are you.
(03:28):
It's oppous for the work of ahandle, you know, one person
to latch letters and things. Oha crank. Oh but you're not going
I am sure, I'm susie.Oh no, you wouldn't kill him,
were of course not. But Ido want to know why mister Andrews wants
himself killed, and I'm going totry and talk him out of it.
(03:54):
The fact that I hadn't received aletter for two days had me worried.
A lot of things can happen intodays. So I went to the addresses
to Simon Andrews. It was night. There wasn't a light in the big
house. I walked up the frontstairs once the doorbell and heard it ring
inside. I want somebody in there, Bud. Huh where did you come
(04:19):
from? Never mind where I camefrom. The point is where do you
think you're going? I was goinginside. If the door opens, step
back away from that door with yourhands up. What's the idea. It's
not an idea, Bud, it'sa reality. Awful real go on,
step away and keep your hands upafter you thank you, straight ahead,
(04:49):
go on. I'd still like toknow what the score is about. Ten
to zero, then you're carrying theshot in keep going. Stop at that
door to the right, Get awayfrom it, Holly. This is something
that I picked up on the frontsteps. Mister Andrews. Bring them over
(05:10):
here? Was it you who rangthe bell? That's my usual way of
getting into houses? Who are you? Who do you want your Simon Andrews?
Maybe I am, Maybe I'm not. I said, who are you?
My name is Holiday, Dan Holiday. Well that means nothing. What'll
I do with him? Mister Andrews. Wait a minute, Holly, Holiday,
what did you want here? Icame here to kill you. Watch
(05:31):
him, Holly, at your ownrequest, mister Andrews, Look, keep
your hands away in your pockets.Wait a minute, let's see what you
got in there. Go ahead,no gun, no knight. I don't
understand. That makes three of usa nice cozy group here. I was
going to give you this letter.I thank you wrote it. Yes,
(05:58):
I wrote this, and you you'rebox thirteen. Yes I am. It's
all right, Tolding leave us alone? Huh sure at all? Yes?
Yes, go on go back toyour post. Sure. I'll be right
outside the window now, mister Andrews, what gives? I'm sorry, Holiday,
but I'm afraid afraid of what ofbeing killed? For a man who
(06:19):
wanted to be killed. You're doinga lot of unnecessary work. Why didn't
you come when you got the letter? I was out of town for a
couple of days. Oh please, siss Is Sadan. Would you like a
drink or nothing? I've had onemine. Go out ahead, it's your
house. When I wrote that letter, I wanted to be killed. Why.
Maybe I'm crazy, I don't know, but I was sick of living,
(06:42):
just sick of it. Can youunderstand that? Not yet? I
like to see flowers and bees andbirds. You're younger than I anyway.
I it was a kind of amorbid drill, thinking that someone was actually
going to kill me. Did youreally think I'd do it? I didn't
know. I took the chance.Well, don't worry. The only reason
for coming here to night was tosee what profited this letter, and to
talk you out of it, ifpossible. I wish you'd come two days
(07:05):
ago. Why I want to livenow? I'd met someone and I wanted
to live. Go right ahead.I have already paid someone to kill me.
You what you're crazy? Not now? I was? You can't be
serious, I am, I tellyou someone is going to kill me.
Someone I paid twenty five thousand dollarsto do it. I don't know who.
I don't know when or where, but he's going to kill me or
(07:27):
a foe. Go to the police. I can't. Your life depends on
it, I know, but Ican't go. If I do, there'll
be notoriety. I wouldn't have caredbefore, but I can't let that happen.
Now. You know, I've metsome strange people through my ad in
the Star Times. But if youwant the trophy, there'll be no argument.
Put it on your metal. Don'tjoke. I'm not. You've got
yourself into this, not get out. Maybe maybe you can help, Sure,
(07:47):
maybe you can. Oh, I'msorry. Look, I'll pay you
whatever you want. I can affordit. Sure. If you can afford
twenty five thousand dollars to get yourselfkilled, you can pay more to stay
alive. That's it, but notto me. Look, Andrews, all
you have to do is call offthe deal. Let the killer keep the
money, but call it off.Don't you think I've thought of that?
And what's the matter? Who didn'tread this newspaper? Did you? No?
(08:09):
Why? Look at the headline BennyFranklin slain, big shot of gamblings,
syndicated kill an underworld slay. Socries about this. Franklin was the
man to whom I paid the moneyI paid him to find someone to kill
me. Well, well, wellyou really locked the door on yourself,
(08:30):
didn't you do something? Oh?Just like that. Franklin was the only
man who knew about our our deal. I paid him in cash. What
do you think I could do anythingfind the man who's going to kill me.
I'll pay whatever you say. Look, Andrews, it isn't a question
of money. It's a question oflooking through the well known haystack for the
equally well known needle. I wouldn'tknow where to start. Take my advice
and take a chance on going tothe police, hire private detectives. Anything
(08:52):
I can't, I can't. Pleaseholiday help me. Good heavens, you'd
give help to a dog if itneeded it. I'm grasping at straws a
free to leave the house I had. Tolling is a bodyguard. But sooner
or later the man who's out tokill me will get to me. Please
hold day, Please all right, mister Andrews. But if at any time
I find things getting a little hot, I'll go to the police myself.
(09:13):
That's the only way I'll make thedeal. All right, all right,
anything now you paid Franklin. Franklinevidently knew someone who would be willing to
pull a trigger or use a knife. But you have no idea who none.
Then we've got to find a startingpoint, and the starting point is
Benny Franklin. He's dead, man, he's dead, very but he must
(09:33):
have left the family. Of course, the paper said something about his mother.
I'll try to see her tomorrow morning. Tomorrow. Why not tonight because
the police will be questioning you watchingher house. You'll have to wait until
tomorrow. Then I'll see her.Well. I didn't like to set up
(09:54):
Andrews was a fool and obviously apsychopathic case. But he in trouble.
So the next morning I saw Franklin'smother. I can't tell anybody anything else.
I told all I knew to thepolice. Yes, yes, to
the police a hundred times. Myboy's gone. What good is all of
(10:15):
this? I'm not the police, missus Franklin. Then why do you want
to know about Benny. Maybe I'ma friend of his. I don't know
you never saw you before. Look, Benny once did me a favor,
call me a friend of his villain. I don't know your name. It's
Holiday, Dan Holiday. Where didBenny know you? Oh, let's not
talk about that. What I wantto know is what did you tell a
police everything I could? What wasthat I didn't expect me to tell you.
(10:39):
I don't know. Maybe who hisfriends were or weren't. He was
killed. He was killed by somebodywho hated him. It was a man
named Scott. Scott. Did youever see No, I told the police
Benny saw him often. He alwayswent out to meet him. Why,
I don't know. Oh was thereanyone else? No? When I knew
(11:03):
then, he never brought his friendshere. I guess he wouldn't. Now,
Missus Franklin, did your son recentlycome into well? A pretty good
summer money? Money? You alwayshad plenty of money, I think give
it took any of it? Iwouldn't touch any of it, No,
of course not. But what didhe tell you if he came in to
say twenty five thousand dollars? No, he wouldn't kill me. Why are
(11:26):
you asking that? I have myreasons, Missus Franklin. Maybe if we
knew he had the money, andif we could find out if he gave
it to anyone, we might beable to learn who killed him. Don't
you want to see his murder?I don't know. He was your sin,
Yes, my son. I wasashamed of him for what he was.
(11:50):
That I loved him, yes,I know, But thank missus Franklin.
Did he have that much money recently? No? No, don't think
he did. You're sure then whenhe had money, spend it all at
once. Then if you'd had asmuch as twenty five thousand dollars recently,
he had put on quite a show. Yes, yes, yes, But
(12:11):
what good is this? I don'tknow yet, and you can't tell me
anything more about this Scott. Well, Benny went to meet him the night
he was killed. All right, missus Franklin, it's all for now,
thank you. What are you goingto do? Look for a man named
Scott who has suddenly come into twentyfive thousand dollars, That was all.
(12:41):
Look for a man named Scott whohad a lot of money. A killer
would make himself hard to catch.Well, the starting place is one of
Benny Franklin's favorite places, Then another, then another, then finally in the
bar of a little cocktail long.Yes, quite a bit, I hope.
What did you say. Look,my name's Holiday. I'm a writer,
(13:03):
and I thought perhaps you could helpme out. Oh you want me
to write something for you? Oh? No, but I'm interested in Benny
Franklin's gays. Oh I'm so yeah. He came here quite a lot to
me, lots of people. DoFranklin came here more than lots of people?
Maybe? Can you tell me anythingabout it? Mister Holiday. There's
(13:26):
something like five newspapers in this city. Pick up any one of them read
all about Benny Franklin. That's notthe kind of stuff I want. That's
the only kind of stuff you get, even for this. You could buy
a lot of newspapers for that fifty, but not a lot of information.
What makes you think I can giveyou anny this fifty? What you want
to know? Anything you can tellme? And I heard that any Franklin
(13:50):
wasn't the big boy in the gamblingoutfit? Oh you sure? That's what
I hear? Also that there wasa lot of talk around it Benny was
getting too big. Nice that I'mnot interested in that part of the story.
What do you mean I want toknow about a man named Scott.
I don't know him. You neverheard of Himore? No, who is
(14:11):
he? Where is he? Idon't know. I don't know nothing about
that. Got a trigger man?Isn't your killer? Well yeah, kinda,
But I'll tell you something, misterHoliday. Go ahead, you've got
something pintal mister sure, well, you're looking for a guy named Scott,
that's right, but you ain't gonnafind him ever. Why, I'll tell
(14:35):
you, and it's all I'll tellyou, and then you leave here,
mister Holiday, all right, goahead. You ain't gonna find a guy
named Scott because they're just ain't aguy named Scott. And now back to
(15:07):
Killer at Large Another Bot's thirteen adventurewith Alan Ladd as damn Holiday. So
there wasn't anyone named Scott. Ididn't believe the bartender in that cocktail lounge.
I didn't believe him because Franklin's motherhad told me Scott saw a lot
of Benny. But maybe missus Franklincould be mistaken. I went home and
(15:31):
thought it over. The more Ithought, the less sense of According to
the bartender, I was looking fora man who didn't exist. According to
Simon Andrews. I was looking fora man who was going to kill him.
Later that night, I decided tofamous Standrews a visit. I was
leaving my apartment build England. Don'ttell her on just keep walking holiday,
but just keep walking, I said, that's the idea. Away, go
(15:54):
on, it's gonna let I'll facethe wall of the billow of your hands
up, way up, I'll justbeside. Shut up and stay shut up.
You've got no gun. Everybody seemedsurprised at that. Maybe I should
(16:15):
carry a few guns to keep peoplehappy. It could be healthier for you.
Now, why were you asking forScott? How do you know I
was? I got friends, PeutenBar could come on holiday. Why were
you asking about Scott? I havean uncontrollable curiosity about man having that name.
I collect. I want to haveto do that again Holliday. And
(16:36):
I want good answers. That's thekind I don't have. Now, maybe
you'll tell me who you are.I could be Scott. Yeah, I
had that idea when you asked meto go for a walk with you.
Who sent you to the cuttail lunch? No one? I said, I
want good answers. I gave youone No one sent me to that bar.
It just happened to go in andask about Scott. That's practically it.
(17:00):
Who told you about him in thefirst place? Franklin's mother, You're
a liar, all right. I'ma liar whom i'd argue with a gun
around? Well, adaman, andI want to get a good look at
your face? Do I look anybetterfy? Matchally? I've never seen you
(17:21):
before. I wish you never had. Who got you in time? Who
did? What? Come on?Come on? You ain't one of them
out? You know I'm getting old. You won't get a gun? What's
your pitch? You know? Ithink we're going at this the wrong way.
We're asking each other questions. Supposewe just settle down to a couple
of true confessions. Where you're from? Why? I don't know what this
(17:44):
pitch is? But who sent youout to get me? Get you?
Yeah? You come in to putthe finger on me, and I didn't
come in here alone. Look behindyou, right? I don't please,
don't I I what a big differencea gun makes depending on who holds it.
Now? Are you? My nameis Nicky? That's name Scott?
No, would you like to takea rest? With your own gun.
(18:04):
Oh please, please tell Scott Iwon't do it a little more. Please
give me a break this time.I'll get out of tunnel. Do anything,
but let me go. Did yousay I should tell Scott? Sure?
I was just gonna put the biteon him once, just enough to
set me up, and then Iwas gonna blow down. I'll just tell
him that. Place them all withyour hands up. No, let's see
(18:25):
what trinkets you're loaded with. It'sjust a letter. H What are you
gonna do now? Well, sinceyou invited me for a walk and I
didn't really want to go, Ithink i'd better turn you over to the
police. Oh no, you woncomestart back here? Nothing, man,
I think at all. Just afriendly game of tag and I'm it.
(18:52):
My charming visa V disappeared into thenight, left me holding the bag.
And the bag in this case wasa letter. At first I didn't payny
attention to it. Later I lookedat the addressment thank you. He would
clear have some of this puzzle forme and didn't. Everything got worse,
so I decided to go and seemister Simon Andrews back again, mister Holiday.
(19:22):
Well, mister Tauling still the faithfulwatchdog. Let's go in, go
ahead. Where's Andrews? Same placehe was last night? This way?
(19:44):
Holidays back, mister Andrews. Holiday, come in, come in, tarling,
get back to your post. Yes, sir, well holliday, Well,
mister Andrews, I Heaven's sake,man, don't just stand there.
What happened? Who were you?Did you or anything? Which question do
you want answered? First? Whatare you trying to do? I'm sorry,
mister Andrews. What do you knowabout a man named Scott? Scott?
(20:07):
Scott name means nothing, nothing atall. No. I think Scott
is a man. We're looking forthe same Scott who might have killed Benny
Franklin. Scott killed Franklin? Butwhy could be for your twenty five thousand
dollars. I don't understand. Putit this way. You went to Franklin
hard to kill her. Franklin gotin touched with the invisible mister Scott.
(20:27):
Maybe Franklin tried to hold out onScott and, being a man of very
very short temper, mister scottie raisedFranklin. Did you find him? I
don't know. What do you know? That's a man? Andrews. I'm
in this game on a rain check. Don't shot at me or go back
of the bench. I'm sorry,Holiday, but you did learn something.
Do you know a man about thirtymedium high, dark hair and eyes,
(20:48):
small mustache, little scar over hisrighty. No, no, I don't
only knows you because he had aletter for you. Here. What's like
I said, it's a letter,but what's in it? I don't like
to be tried about this. Butyou could open it, you know,
Oh of course. Well, lookyou got until midnight tomorrow. Midnight tomorrow.
(21:22):
Lets not signed. It doesn't haveto be Holiday. It's from the
killer. Why should he send youa letter torturing me? That could be?
Why didn't you turn that that nikkyover to the place. Why didn't
you do something? What's your suggestion? Andrews? You put yourself and it's
all not climb out of it.I'm pulling out. Oh no, no,
no place. You're the only manwho knows who's after me. Please,
Holiday only's no object. Just findthat man. How you saw him
(21:42):
only once? Yes, but youknow what he looks like. Look,
let's turn this whole thing out ofthe place. Let them find him.
I can't I told you before Ican't holiday make one more, try just
one more and spend the rest ofmy life about my head. Take talking
with you and what about you?Oh? I didn't think of that,
mister Andrews. You didn't think ofa lot of things. One of them
(22:03):
was how stupid can you be?I know? But will you help?
On one condition? What's that? You paid twenty five thousand dollars to have
yourself killed, probably because you couldn'ttake your own life. You wanted to
thrill. Okay, you got it. You paid twenty five thousand dollars for
it. Now I'll pay fifty thousand. What I got a check, The
fifty thousand payable to any chart hereI name. That's the only condition,
(22:27):
the only one under which I'll tryto find the man. All right,
I'll do it. I'll write itimmediately. Good. Oh, I Understandrews.
The check had better be honored orI won't go through with this.
I swear I live. Take itwith you here I first thing in the
morning. Okay, Nah, whatare you going to do to find mister
(22:49):
Scott? Fine, mister Scott.Oh, it sounded so easy. So
I did the only thing I could. I went back to the little cocktail
lounge on the same bartender. Yes, I, oh you hello, what
(23:10):
do you want now? I'm lookingfor Nikki. Nikki, Yeah, Nikki,
you know him? I don't knownobody named Nikki. You didn't know
a man named Scott even I don't. We'll pass that, but I want
to find Nikki. Believe if Iknew a Nikki, why should I tell
you anything? Because Nikki is doingto get killed killed, That's it.
(23:30):
I don't believe you, mister. You've got to a man named Scott is
after Nicki. I want to warnhim. There ain't nobody named Scott,
nobody who cared to admit you know, but there is a Scott. He's
after Nikki. You are on thelevel. Yes, I am okay,
you'll find Nicky where he lives sixfive four South Rogers or one more thing?
(23:52):
Is NICKI mixed up in that gamblingSynicki? I answered your question the
only one I'm gonna answer. Now, you get out of here, get
out of the roof was in onme. Well, I was playing a
Hunts and playing it all the waythrough. I wanted to address the bartender
(24:14):
gave and walked up the stairs andcame to a door that had Nikki's name
on it. I started to knock. The door was open just a little.
I pushed it all the way openand went in. I stood in
the dock for a moment and walkedtoward the window. I stumbled over something
on the floor. I lighted amatch. Nikki, Nikki, he's real
(24:37):
dead, Holiday, real dead, tiling tilling Scott, Oh, how about
your own way? You know?I thought you were never gonna get here?
What are you doing here? Where'sAndrews? Give me that check he
gave you. You killed Nikki Agood guess, Holiday, Hand me that
check? Okay? Here? Thanks? Oh, mister Holliday, you're going
(25:02):
to be very sorry you came here? Am I calling? Tolling? Thank
you, mister Holliday. Andrews.Fight a gathering, isn't it? NICKI
toiling you? Good evening, misterScott. Oh you guessed? Eh?
(25:25):
No, I figured it out.I'm sorry. I haven't got time to
listen to it. My shop musthave attracted attention. Three men killed you
do all right? Franklin for tryingto take over the gambling syndicate. Nikki
for trying to blackmail you because heknew you'd killed Franklin and toiling because I
didn't trust him. I sent himhere to kill Niki, but I thought
to check you with from me wouldprove too much for his loyalty. I
(25:48):
must go now. Holiday. Thanksfor finding NICKI for me. I had
no idea who was blackmailing me,so you used me for our Patsy cooked
up that story. Certainly one ofmy boys would have been wreck nice.
But you are a stranger, understand, And I've got news for you,
mister Scott. The police will belooking for Andrews, You the higher up
in the gambling ring, the manwho kept out of sight looking for me.
(26:14):
That's right, because you slipped.Listen, you see, I made
a phone call to the police. That's why they're coming. Not because anyone
heard your shot, but because Icalled them bluff. Oh no. When
I went to see you with thatletter, I only described Nikki. I
never mentioned his name. But youdid. You said Nikki, you look
(26:42):
out. He's got a gun.Look out for him. You've got your
twenty five thousand dollars with mister Andrews. Gee, mister Halliday, you certainly
(27:19):
were smart to figure that out.Ever played poker, Susie? Is it
like Kim Romie. No, notquiet. But if you've ever played,
you'll know how good it feels todraw to an inside straight and make it.
I don't get it, how,Susie. The police are not coming
for Andrews. They were out ona call to stop a fight. Sure,
I didn't think of that Nicki routineuntil I was talking with Andrews.
(27:41):
You said you called the police.I say a lot of things, Susie.
A man has to say a lotof things when he's looking at his
own tombstone. Do you mean totell me that awful man actually brought your
tombstone along? And I? Why? Good night, Susie. Next week,
same time, through the courtesy ofParamount Pictures, Alan Ladd again stars
(28:03):
as Dan Holiday in Box thirteen.Batch thirteen is directed by Richard Sandville,
and this week's original story was writtenby Russell Hughes. Original music is composed
and conducted by Rudy Schrager. Partof Susie is played by Sylvia Picker,
and production is supervised by Burne Coxtonson. What's thirteen is a Mayfair production from
(28:25):
Hollywood Watch for Alan Ladd and hislatest Paramount picture, Welcome Back. Well.
I thought we had a at firstthat we had a silver medalist in
the Crazy Box thirteen ladders contest aboutthe gentleman. Turned out to be not
(28:48):
so crazy after all. This wasjust an incredibly well crafted mystery. The
one thing that's kind of interesting throughoutthis series is that Alan Ladd's Dan Holiday
character made a point of not carryinga gun, and I think one of
the reasons for that is that Lad'sfirst film that made him a success was
(29:10):
in this Gun for Hire, wherehe played a kind of an anti hero
character who was a hired assassin, and that an Holiday character definitely takes him
out of that gray area and opensthe door, perhaps to some of the
roles he would get later on inhis acting career. Well, I had
(29:32):
quite a few people tell me whoFatty was, and as I was listening
to the show, I knew Ihad an idea. I had heard it
before, and I would smack myselfwhen I found out that I was and
I was right. I got aboutfive different comments from different places, and
(29:55):
thanks to everybody who commented. Iwon't read them all just so we don't
repeat, but I read a couple. Adam, I really enjoy the great
detectives and the Dragnet Show. Aboutyour question about the voice of Fatty in
this episode, I thought you'd recognizeit right away. It's Alan Read,
known to old time radio fans asPisqually from Life with Luigi and to everyone
(30:19):
else as Fred Flintstone. Of course, Pisqually Luigi my friend. Hello,
Hello, Hello, Okay. Idon't do imitations that often, but that's
a very memorable voice. Different thanFred Flintstone, but Read was definitely one
of those actors who could do alot of different voices that you wouldn't necessarily
(30:41):
be able to identify him. ButI think that I think that he's writing,
so is everyone else. I'll readone more common here because there's also
a suggestion. Hello, I'm fairlynew to listening to your podcast. I've
come to look forward to your excellentcommentary at the beginning and end, and
regards to box Store team this week. I always thought the voice of Fanny
(31:03):
sounded like Fredsick Flintstones. For futureseries, I would love to hear Richard
Diamonds, Rogues Gallery or the same. While all of those are definitely a
planned planned to do Rogues Gallery thesoonest we should be getting started with that
in seven or eight months on Tuesdays, so be looking for that. And
(31:25):
thanks for the comments and everybody whohelped with the suggestions, Jeffrey and Earnest
and also Nathan and anybody else thatI'm miss Thanks so much for helping me
out on that one thing my wifebrought up regarding the Candy versus neuro vote,
Well, what happens if the podcastalley vote is a tie. In
(31:48):
the event of a tie on thepodcast Alley vote, we will have a
