flat number six. Who is?Who is box thirteen? Glad to let
(03:57):
it with you? Yes, I'vegot it. Put it under there,
Okay, here it comes. Standinto that light across the horror so I
can see you, all right,Come on, he noriyah, No,
(04:24):
no, no, keep away fromthe window. The shades down, no
one can see, and keep awayfrom it. You've got enough bolts and
chains on that door to hold offa tribe of Indians. I know what
I'm doing. Yeah, And wegat a good look at you and the
yellow light that came from the oneglobe dangling from the ceiling. The man
looked at me, and I lookedat him. He was about fifty.
(04:46):
His face was drawn and pinched, his hands shook, and his eyes squinty
and sharp, slid over me.I didn't like him. Then he seemed
to be satisfied and sat down onthe chair opposite me. Sure you have
to adventure. Eh, that's right. Did you see anyone following you here?
Not that I know of? Whyexpecting someone else? Was expecting someone?
(05:11):
No? No, I'm not. What do you want with me?
Are you free to go anywhere? That's what my aunt says. We'll go
anyplace, do anything I usually do. Would you be willing to go?
As far is he Philippine Earners. It's a man sized arran. Would you
go? That's what I want toknow? Would you go? All?
That? All depends on what I'vegot to do? There's anything crooked?
The answer is no, there's nothingcrooked. I want you to go there
(05:34):
and bring back something that belongs tome. Here's something I've got to have.
What's stopping you from going yourself?Look at me? I'm sick.
It could be, but you're surethere's no other reason. What do you
mean? Well, the balls andthe locks on the door, the fact
that you said in your letter youwouldn't be at this address after tonight,
(05:55):
the shade's drawn. You're afraid?I was following? Sure? So two
and two or four and the fourin this case comes out to you're afraid
to show your face? Hey haveenemies, the ordinary kind or the kind
that would kill you. They killme. I see, what's your name?
You have to do it? There'sa little peculiarity of mine. I
(06:17):
like to know the people I'm dealingwith. My name is Krill, Joseph
Krill. Does it mean anything toyou? No more than mine would mean
to you? Holiday down Holiday? There's ten thousand dollars in these four year
Oh I don't care about that.Oh the money doesn't interest me. Does
need money? Doesn't? I musthave said something very funny. You did
(06:44):
holiday? You did? You see? Ten thousand dollars doesn't mean anything to
you? Oh, no, itdoesn't. I'd better explain you. See,
I'm a writer the stories I get. In response to that box thirteen
ad, you answered, well, they pay me amply for my efforts.
There's one born rominute. But willyou go and do what? I'll give
you the name of a man fromyou're to contact in Manila. That's all
(07:08):
you have to know now that whathappens that will take care of yourself.
Why do you want me to bringback? I told you something that belongs
to me. Something I've got tohave, something that means life or death
to me. That important. We'rewasting time. Will you do it?
It's adventuring and when you get back, I'll give you ten thousand dollars.
Do anything you want with it.I don't care, but bring me what
(07:30):
I want. Do I have toleave as soon as you can. One
more question, Where are you goingto get the ten thousand dollars? Well,
I'll have it when you get back. Honestly, do I come here?
No, I won't be here.I've got to keep moving because he
(07:53):
never mind when you get back.Put another ad below the one for bucks
thirteen to see your back. I'llget in touch with you and the name
of the man I'm to meet inManila. You'll find him at the addression
and the slippet paper. He's expectingsomeone from me. And here take this
enfralope. Don't open it, butyou get in touch with the man seal
(08:16):
instructions and holiday. Take good careof it. Vlope hide it. If
he knew you were carrying it,he might kill you. And with that
little jam as a bangvaias from Krell, I left him. When I got
(08:37):
home, I took the envelope hehad given me and had it sewn into
the lining of my jacket. Fourdays later I was Manila. After a
nice, pleasant trip on the plane, I went to a hotel and registered.
Later that evening, I took acab to the address of Krell's man.
It was a tiny, ramshackle placein the street that was so narrow
the cab couldn't get through, soI had to get out and walk.
(09:00):
And right there is where I shouldhave said quits to the whole thing at
all. Familiar feeling began tingling myspine. As usual, Foolishly I paid
no attention to it. I gotto the house. There was no answer.
(09:20):
I tried the door. It waspitched black inside. I closed the
door behind me. I stood therefor a couple of seconds, trying to
see through the blackness. Who wasthat? The light went on and facing
me was a man with a gun, and from where I stood, the
(09:43):
muzzle was neatly in line with mythird rib. The man looked at me
for a moment, then turned aroundback to me. See idea, I
don't know yet, but we'll see, okay, faceful, who are you?
Never mind that? Who are you? Down? Holiday doesn't mean a
(10:03):
thing? Look down it? Yeah, we got company, sergeant, So
I see, sergeant, what isthis? Sit on. Look, I
came here to see someone. What'sthe name of the person you came to
see? I don't know. Ifyou don't know this man, why did
you come here? Come on?Talk? I don't see the reason why
(10:24):
I should. Would it give youa reason if I told you we're police.
I don't know. You don't knowmuch, do you? Why did
you come to see this man?You don't know? On business? What
kind? I was sent here bywhom? A man named Joseph Krell Krell
well will will? Evidently that explainsa lot of things, doesn't know?
(10:48):
It? Couldn't it? Couldn't?You say? Your name is Holiday?
That's right, all right, misterHoliday. Step over to this other room
with me. Come on, openthe door, Sergeant in Hollidy, Oh
do you have to keep that gunon me? It's better that way.
I want to see him in Yeah, i'd look on the floor behind the
(11:09):
bed. Now you've seen him.Who killed him? We'd like to know
that too. You didn't think Idid. Maybe you'd like to talk now,
tell us why you came here, why you had to see Carlos Carlo?
Yeah, the name of the deceasedhim? All right? Lieutenant,
Lieutenant Keith, Manilla Police. Thisis Sergeant Enrica Cotis. Okay, I
(11:33):
was sent here by Joseph Krell.I was to see this Carlos why,
I don't know. I was togive him an envelope? Where is it
at the hotel? And we'll findout about that later. Now, this
Krell, what did he send you? He couldn't come himself. But whatever
it was he wanted me to bringback. He said it meant life and
death to him. He offered meten thousand dollars to get it for him.
(11:54):
I was in the end. Idon't know. Is that your stock
answering? Look, I'm telling thetruth. You don't believe it. Check
with the least in the States, verify my identity. We will, But
first let's get something straight. Ohthat would be a pleasure. Krell sent
you for something that was worth tenthousand dollars to him. Did anyone else
know about it? Hardly? Why? Hardly? Because Karl said I might
(12:15):
be killed and you didn't talk toanyone on the plane about it. No.
Okay, we'll get back to yourhotel and check on a few things.
Sergeant stay here, no one inor out. Meet me at headquarters
as soon as you can get away. See now, Holiday, we'll see
how much trouble you're really in.On the way back to my hotel,
(12:39):
Keith didn't say much, neither todie. But I was doing a lot
of thinking, and suddenly it hitme something Keith had asked me, something
he had no right to ask,and something he couldn't have asked unless I
looked at him. He was smilingto himself. Oh, hey, I
(13:00):
had to take a chance. Bythe way, lieutenant, what that building
over there where just you are rightlook out the window. What building are
you talking about? Driver? Driver, stop the cab? What is it?
My friend he met with an accident. We should maybe go to a
(13:22):
doctor. No, I don't thinkso. When he comes to ask him
a question for me, William,Yeah, just ask him how he knew
I came to Manila on a plane. And now back to sealed instructions.
(13:48):
Another Box thirteen, a denture starringAlan Ladd as Dan Holiday. So there
I was out in the middle ofa big puzzle and a murder. Sure
Keith had killed Carlos to keep mefrom getting to him. Keith must have
followed me from the States. Ohit was smart at him not to play
(14:09):
his cards on the plane or assoon as I got to Manilla. He
waited until I tried to contact Carlos. Then he planned to get the envelope
away from me without any more fussor bother. Now I had to get
back to the hotel and get thatenvelope before Keith came too, because when
he did, he was going tobe very, very nasty. So back
at the hotel, I had abellhop goat in my room and bring down
(14:31):
the jacket. Is this the rightone, mister Holliday? Oh yeah,
yeah, that's the one. Hereyou are, Thank you, sir.
Will it be all? Oh waita minute, yes, sir, come
here behind this pillar? Something wrong, sir, yeah, there is.
Look over that entrance. Do yousee that big man standing there, white
(14:52):
hat, gray suit, Yes,sir. I don't want to meet him.
Oh I see. Look you gothrough the lobby paging me. He'll
follow you to see where I am. Lead him a Mary chase. Guy,
I got it, mister Holiday.Okay, keep going, aging,
mister Holiday. Mister Dan Holiday. The bellhopped at it up good. Keith
(15:16):
fell into the gang and followed thebellhop just far enough behind him so that
he could surprise me if he sawme. But he didn't. I ducked
out of the entrance and took acab to police headquarters. There, let
me get this street, mister Holiday. You say this, Keith pretended to
be an officer. That's right,Lieutenant Marinas. But why so he could
get this envelope away from him? He'd already killed once to get it.
(15:37):
Maybe you thought killing me would attracttoo much attention. But this envelope,
where is it? And what isin it? I'm going to see that
right away. You got a knife? Yes? Here? Oh? Thanks?
Well, this was a good jacket. There it is open it?
(15:58):
Sure? Well? What's this?May I see it? Here? M
This is very curious, mister Holiday. It looks like like a map.
It's half a map of ten ofmarinos. Carlos had the other hand,
of course, of course, buta map of what and to what?
(16:21):
To whatever? Karle wanted? Krell, Yeah, that's the name. Why
you did not mention his name before? Why not? Well, I didn't
think it was important to the Pilipinos. It is very important. I don't
get it. Why. During theJapanese occupation of the islands, Joseph Kreil
was a collaborator. Oh no,wonder he didn't Dare come back. But
(16:45):
the rest of this business, howdoes it fit in? I do not
know as yet. However, Ithink I have an idea, mister Holiday.
Yes, what's that? Before thewar, before the Japanese imbrasion,
Kreill was a gambler. It wasknown that he ran a gambling house with
a partner, partner Keith. Thatcould be although Keith was not his name.
(17:06):
Then so what's the rest of youridea? The partner fled when the
Japanese came, Quail did not.Now I think the partner would like to
find Quail. Mister Holiday, wemust find the other half of this map.
Keith has it? I know that, and find Keith. That would
be much easier said than done.Unless unless the tenant, Unless you help
(17:29):
in the Holiday. I do notthink that Keith will suspect that you have
come to the police. He foundme from the States. He must think
I'm in with Kraill. If hethanks that, Danny think I wouldn't Dare
go to the place exactly. So, uh, Oh, I see you
want to tie me out as live? That is that it? It is
the only way to get him becausehe will come after this half of the
(17:53):
map. Of course you can refuse, and I do not say it.
I would blame you. No,I guess not. But well, you've
got yourself a piece of live bait, and I hope it stays that way.
It was the only way to getKeith. Besides, I was very
(18:15):
curious as to what that map meantand why getting something meant life and death
to Joseph Krell. So I checkedout of the hotel and with one of
Lieutenant Moreno's men following at a distance, I took a room on the other
side of town and waited. Anhour passed two. Then, when it
was beginning to look as though ourmister Keith was smarter than we'd figured,
(18:38):
come in. Well, hello, mister Holiday, you've given me a lot
of trouble. You don't want anapology, do you? No? All
I wants the other half of thatmap. Oh shure, you're knock on
the door. I say, comein, give you the map. And
that's that. Very simple, Yeah, very simple and very smart. But
(19:00):
you don't think i'd have the mapon me, do you? Maybe not,
but you know where to get it. Let's go. Oh wait a
minute, what for Why why don'twe make a deal? What kind?
Well, neither half of the mapis any good without the other. And
I'm sure you haven't got yours withyou, Oh but I have. I
see. Was it very hard gettingit from Carlos? Now? Not very
(19:22):
No harder than it will be toget the half you got. Oh,
look, we can still make adeal. Keith or whatever your name is,
Keith will do Okay, how aboutit? Maybe you're smart at that.
Okay, let's go after you holidayand don't forget this. It's loaded.
You make it easy to remember.Yeah, I can make it very
(19:45):
easy to forget by pulling the trigger. No, no, the backway,
the backway, backway? How arethey? How dumb do you think I
am? Or how smart do youthink you are? You forgot all about
I'm rinky? Didn't you all theside? Yeah? This story you see,
Enriki followed us away from Carlos place. He knew you slug me in
(20:07):
the cab. En Rickie seems tohave done all right, just perfect,
getting this car go ahead, andRicky looking for your cop friends holidays.
Yeah, you see when you pullthat bellhop trick at the hotel, Enriki
was outside. He followed you.So you go to the police. Still
(20:32):
bad Holiday, but there are nopolice. Oh, I see, and
Rickie took care of him. Isthat it? Enriki has been very busy.
Now let's have that half you gut. I told you I haven't got
it. Quit's stalling. It wasto be bait for me, wasn't it.
Jo and Marinas were so sure you'dhave me. You didn't bother to
leave the half at headquarters. Let'shave it now. Keith looked at me.
(20:55):
Sure he knew you held all theaces, and he held the gun
right at my head. There wasnothing to do but drag out my half
of the map and give it tohim. He looked at it, held
it against his half. They matched. All right, Holiday, this is
the end of the line. Youget off here. What do you mean?
What do you think? Take thenext turn right on, Ricky and
slow down a little. Mister Holidayis leaving us for good. Keith met
(21:21):
it en. Ricky started to takethe next turn to the right, but
I had a different idea. Igot the handle of the door, twisted
it hard and jumped, took afold fall on my shoulder, rolled over
into the digital side of the road. Keith jumped out of the carst out
of tourn issue as he came. And then you alo hurt, mister Holiday.
(21:52):
No, no, not, lieutenantOh we are a majority of two,
Lieutenant Marinas Keith, he is takencare of. How did you get
here by putting two strings to mybow? Mister Holiday? The one man
I had follow you was how shallwe say? Eight? Decoy? Well
let's say it and be very happy? Is he all right? We're a
little lump on his head? Butall right, you know this was very
(22:15):
close. Yes, I am verysorry, mister Holiday, but I did
not expect mister Keith to have acar. However, all is well?
That ends well, yeah, sure, now how about that map? Come?
We will see about that. Nowfor the two halts of the map.
He went to work. Kraill hadhidden something in the hills back of
Vanilla HEADNT before the Japanese invasion.Three hours later, Lieutenant Marinus and I
(22:40):
sat on a box and watched hismen digging into the earth, and Marinus
talked, you see this. Carloswas Kreaile's servant. When Quail left the
Philippine Island, he left half themap m in case he was caught a
half map would do no one anygood. And that is right. Keith
was Quaile's partner, Key leapt Quailsstayed to become collaborate, playing two games
at once, the Chaps one he'dbeen with them, the Allies one.
(23:06):
We had to have what he hadhere exactly. We have found it.
This box, an iron box,Sergeant break the log. Yes, sir,
mister Holiday, you may have thehonor of opening it. Oh thanks.
(23:26):
I looked at the lid and unwrappeda large package done up in waterproof
oil silk. It is quite alot of money, yes, quite a
lot of money, perhaps half amillion, mister Haliday, from the looks
of it. Yes, and itall belongs to mister Craile, a man
who betrayed my people and his country. We shall be happy to hold it
(23:51):
in trust for him until he caresto come and claim it. Yeah,
I think I'll take him back.Something else though, something else? What
that? What that over there?Mister Holiday? You are a poet.
(24:18):
I left Vanilla the next day withLieutena Marinos saying goodbye with me. Was
the iron box I'd come across theocean to get. But in it was
something a great deal, different fromwhat Krell expected back in the States.
I put an ad below my boxthirteen AD. I waited, and then
here it is mister Halliday. Rightbelow the box thirteen ad. It says,
(24:40):
Holiday, come to one, twofive six chickering place. Okay,
that's as Susie. But why don'tthey arrest mister Krell? Arrest? I
think they've got something much better,Susie, much better. Who is it,
(25:06):
Holiday? Let me in if yougot it? Did you get it?
Yes? Here it is? Ohthat's it. Yes. I waited
too wrong, so very long, and I'm very anxious to see what you
think about it. You didn't,nobody? The luck looked like it was
(25:30):
opened. Why don't you look inside? Crow, I've saved this key.
Oh your ex partner is dead. Now you won't have to worry about him
killing you for double crossing him.Good God, I pay you well,
Honiday, I pay you a way. Well. What who is this?
Who is this? Surprised? It'sGod, you're talking. But I brought
(25:56):
you something in place of the money, Crow, flag of the New Philippine
Republic, the flag of the peopleyou betrayed. You're very sick, aren't
you? Crow? Very sick. You never lived a stand trial, but
you could have lived well and allthat money. Please certainly, Crow.
(26:26):
Oh, here's the other half ofthe map, which is why you wrote
to me originally. I'm not doublecrossed you. You're gonna have your treasure
anytime, Crow, any time youwant to claim it in Manila, and
anytime you want to go back andclaim it. I think the people there
will be very glad to see you. A half million dollars. Wow,
(27:07):
who does it belong to? MisterHolliday. It's mister Crow, But I
don't think he'll ever claim it.Geez, but what about him? Will
he go? Well, what'll hedo? I don't know, Susie,
and I don't think I really careabout a man who would double cross his
own country. Well, anyway,it was exciting for you, you know.
(27:27):
