(00:27):
Welcome to the Great Detectives of OldTime Radio from Boise, Idaho. This
is your host, Adam Rand. What Box thirteen lasted for fifty two weeks
and we have all fifty two episodes, So I want to have to worry
about any other show in this timeslot. For about fifty two weeks between

(00:49):
Pat Novac for Higher and successor shows, I pretty much figured out what I'm
gonna do for the next forty sixweeks at that time slot. But I'm
always looking for new detective stories andum a fan of those. In figuring
out what might be interesting to bringto listeners, and I had a couple

(01:11):
of things is just very surprising. The baked thing is how fortunate we are
with the shows that we've we've beenable to listen to and their preservation.
Um, really, it is incrediblyrare to have good, well preserved shows.

(01:38):
Um. You take a look at, um, you take a look
at at some of these shows thatlasted an incredible amount of time, and
there's next to know episodes for allthat lasted. Um. You take for
example, The Thin Man, andyou know, most sources I can find,

(02:02):
there's maybe eight episodes in existence. The series ran about ten years,
The Fat Man about twenty five thirtyepisodes, depending on where you go Finman
and Fat Man. I'm gonna tryand maybe run those consecutively. But incredible

(02:27):
lack of preservation of some of theseshows. But we found something that'll be
interesting to play and we'll go throughwhat we do have. I'm very grateful
for the Old Time Radio Researchers group. They have done an incredible job of

(02:50):
of finding some of finding some prettygreat show pretty great shows out there and
getting through getting them UH into orderso that they can be listened to and
UM and their goal is to makeup all available for for for free.

(03:13):
And it's excellent work that they're doing. UM. One thing I found in
my research and it's a nice acollection. UM. Not they're not a
sponsor of the show, but ototr cat has a disc dat detectives.

(03:34):
UM let's see an actually series inwhich UM women were the lead character.
And that there's only a smattering ofthese series. UM. Probably the most
successful is Kitty Keene, which ranfor thirty seven to forty one, so
four years, but that one there'sonly four episodes in existence. UM.

(04:00):
Hendy Matson forty nine to fifty onethe kind of actually a female hard boiled
detective. There's about fourteen episodes ofthat in existence. We might do then,
and I'm leaning towards doing Kenny Matson. It's kind of a female version
of pant Novak at some point alongthe way. Others are these one they

(04:24):
found Phyllis Collin. That was actuallymore of the appeal of that one isn't
so much wasn't so much the plotof the show. It was it was
the fact that there was a contestand you could win a prize. Now,
unfortunately, folks, I just don'thave the you know, thousands of

(04:44):
dollars to give away that the sponsorsof the original show had. So but
I'm continuing to look and find greatshows, and I'd love to hear some
of your suggestions as well as wefigure out what type what other shows we're
gonna do on this series so thatwe really can't enjoy it and I don't

(05:05):
like a pretty good variety. Wegot some like we have playing. We
got some hard boiled detectives, We'vegot some soft boiled detectives. I don't
know exactly where to put Dan Holidayon the you know, the hard boiled
soft boiled scale because he's got someaction, but he's also not necessarily not

(05:35):
necessarily somebody who just throws himself intoa lot of physical action. I also
can't really figure out where George Valentinefits on that skinny scale. So got
some soft boiled, hard boiled, and I don't know mid boiled. Is
that director? All Right, Well, we're gonna get into today's episode of
Box thirteen in just a momentum. As I mentioned last week, and as

(06:00):
if continue to mention, well,we just I'm just have a comble recommendations.
There's no specific sponsor the show.Um, but I um, Netflix
continues to add subscribers every day.And one thing I discovered actually looking at
the uh survey from the drag Netshow, uh, is that we have

(06:24):
very Uh is that our average listenerhasn't hasn't doesn't go to a whole lot
of movies. UM. Perhaps becausethey know it's a it's a lot of
money, um and uh maybe thequalities not as well. What's notice with
Netflix is you can get access toso many classic films. Uh. They've

(06:46):
got an outstanding library ninety thousand,uh, and so you don't watch a
wide variety you've got new releases, you've got old releases. UH. And
it's very affordable UH. For onlynine ninety nine a month or eight now
and nine a month, you canget access to more than to more than

(07:06):
nineties thousand different titles in various genres. You can watch some of the stars
we see here at all I'm ladJimmy Stewart, see them at their at
their best. You don't end upwith a house full of DVDs. UH.
And it's and you can shrine outfor free for two weeks. If

(07:30):
you'd like to try on Netflix, please go to our affiliate link go to
Netflix dot Great Detectors dot net.UM. But without any further ado,
let's go ahead and get into today'sepisode of Box thirteen. Box thirteen with

(07:57):
the style of Paramount Pictures. Alanlad has Dan Holiday box routine bux hiruteine
buck routine. The body lay likea squashed melon at the foot of the

(08:26):

Yes, a sloop and then theysail off and dump you on the
beach at Timbuctoo. They couldn't sailoff and dumping on the beach at Timbuctoo.
Why not Timbuctoo happens to be inthe middle of the Sahara Desert.
Oh yes, oh, and pleasetie an anchor to that imagination of yours.
Okay, mister Holiday, but ifyou wind up on the other side

(10:46):
of the world, please don't writeme a letter about your voyage. No.
No, Just reading about the oceanmakes me sea sick. Well,
Holiday, this is it taking alung full of that fresh ocean breeze.

(11:07):
M smell that fresh salt hair andfish not so fresh? Well, A
letter said I was to board theRuthie Jay. I wonder where she'll be.
What she'll be? A schooner, trim and neat forty two foot or
twelve foot beam. There's your dreamboat? And brother, what a scowl?

(11:31):
Neat like a tub of dirty clothesand a mud puddle. I I
mate, hey, you over there, you're calling me mac. Yeah,
what's with this? AHOI make stuff. You're a seafaring man, aren't you.

(11:52):
Don't let these tight pants fool you. And just because I'm standing on
this seat at me, don't makeme no sailor boy, ah my mistake.
Where's the skipper. Hey, look, man, I told you I

But Susie was right. You've beenshanghoed. You're out at sea well
and a pretty girl apport. Hello, mister Holiday, I see you're up

(13:20):

a glow. Mister Harday, youmean the one on my skullar? The
one outside? Oh I'm sorry aboutthat, sapp And you took sometimes Manny
leans a little heavy with that blackjack of his. If you'd leaned any
heavier, you'd driven me right throughthe deck. Was it you who asked

(13:45):
my head for adventure. Does thatsurprise you? I wouldn't have associated such
a violent reception with a lady you'veembarked upon a real adventure. I suppose
I decided to sit this one out. You could go ashore? Now which
direction is ashore? Immediately? Astern? Oh? Thanks about fifteen miles?

(14:05):
Oh well, in that case,I think I'll stay good I didn't want
you to decline my invitation, whichexplains Manny and his blackjack as a reception
committee. Oh well, since you'rein back of this, just who are
you? My name is Marie Goodon. I felt you might be in need
of a vacation, mister holiday.Oh sort of a holiday for holiday?

(14:30):
Is that? It? Exactly great? Now? Just where do we go
on this vacation? You go fishingwith the captain. Oh, I go
fishing with a captain. What aboutyou, mis Gordon? I remain locked
in my cabin. I have thingsto think about. What about Manny and
his convincer? He didn't sail, other business kept him ashore. The plot

(14:54):
flickings, I fished with a captainwhile you stay locked in your cabin and
Manny with his blackjack prows a shore. Correct and Speaking of plots, mister
Holiday, I've always admired those inyour books. Perhaps you could confirm something
for me. I could try establishthe case of someone having something not his

(15:15):
own, wishing to keep it fromanother person who desires it as well.
Where would you put it? Well, in the place you at least expect
to find it, of course,of course, mister Holiday, good night,
good night, Miss Gordan. Rememberthe fish bite early. I know,
especially the suckers. There's a strongodor aboard this ship, and it

(15:41):
isn't just fish that. There's nothingyou can do to night, Holiday,
so you might as well get somesleep. Oh. A sailor's life is
the very best life. So it'sa sailor's life for me, a sailor
life for You're the captain yep Warnership, come through last night school.

(16:03):
Okay, ay, except for thisbump on my knocking. Got to get
a station in twelve bit rough roughis ride. Oh, I understand you
and I are to do some fishingas these grounds is good for swordfish might
even catches a bullin Just where arewe captain? Their Milin's way off?
There is the Catalina's and the Albucohere too, doesn't Miss Garden like the

(16:27):

me in the routiej Then this isn'tMiss Gordon's boat. Nope, she's mine.
We're just charted for this trip. How long have we provisioned for?
Four or five days? Could putin a devil one if you want to
stay out wronger, I didn't wantto stay out this long. Not ready

(16:47):
to go ashore? So soon areyou, mister Holiday? A few days
fishing is just what you need? What I need is to have my head
examined. That bumps still bothering you? No, but what might be happening
in Tomas? Relax, mister Holiday. Everything will be taken care of.
Yeah, yeah, But I'm wonderinghow and what and why? Why?

(17:15):
Is right? Just why would agirl like Marie Gordon Morono on a fishing
boat? What's the gag and how'sit going to be pulled? And on
whom Holiday is an author? You'renot even a good fisherman. You're quite
a fisherman, mister Holiday. Whyin just four days you handle it heavy

(17:36):
gear like a real deep seaman. Thanks, but don't you think we've got
enough fish? You've got another. There goes your line off, y'all rigging.
It's a big Let him unch hurt, No, hit him hurt.
God, you've got him hurt.Don't look now, But but I think
he's got me. He's amlin.I think let him play. Let him

(17:59):
go play with someone else. I'mtired. That's too bad, mister Holiday.
It's such a drag too soon. That's why you broke the gear.
I wanted to break the gear.I'm sick of fishing, Captain. I
want to be put ashore now.Sorry, sir, Miss Gordon will have
to give me new orders. I'lllook, captain, I'm going ashore.
I'm going to be there before tonight. Mister Holiday. You heard the

(18:22):
gentleman. He's going ashore. Amen. Do we run for the mainland or
the island? Neither? We stayhere. But you said mister Holiday was
to go ashore. That's correct.Lower the dinghy, captain, and hand
mister Holiday the oars. The oars, ma'am. We're more than ten miles
off Catalina. If mister Holliday wishesto be ashore before tonight, you'd better

(18:47):
start rowing now. Oh you abeautiful box thirteen. I could have hadn't
a been for you, I wouldn'tbe out in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean in a row boat. Thebetter rest on your rs A minute holiday

(19:08):
because the wind is coming up,the bump on your head is swelling,
ach in your back is growing, and the blisters on your hands are spreading.
When Susie mentioned the beach at Timbucktwo as you knew what she was
talking about, there's no ocean there. Hey, Spalding, you're looking for

(19:33):
me, although you are many Yes, yes, I've been looking for you.
Now what does the great Edward beSpalding want with d right? Really,
you should know better than mention meby name getting that boat? None
of your penthouse type clientelent being ajoint like this. Have a seat,
Spalding, I'll tell you that doesn'tmatter. I just shouldn't be seen even

(19:56):
talking. In that case, hitthe road. I gotta keep my rep
too, meaning what, I'm anice, honest hood And even though you
at and looked like the owner atTiffany's, to me, you're just offense.
Where's your boss, Marie? She'sout fishing, fishing. She couldn't

(20:18):
be looked pretty boy if her andthis holiday want to do in a fishing
trip. It's their business. See, it's my business to get what I've
paid for a lot of shipment's overdueing. I warn't, Dear Sunday, kind
of tough for you or the amountof money this deal involves. I can
get tougher. Well, I don'tknow from nothing. You gotta talk to

(20:38):
her. If Marie's trying to pullsomething, he wait a minute, you
mentioned a holiday, but wouldn't beDan Holiday? Did I say holiday?
Thought I said Hollohan? Or wasit Holloween? All right, man,
they'd be a comedian. Tell yourboss. If she doesn't whose that merchandise

(21:00):
by tomorrow, there'll be trouble. If I told her, she might die
of fright. If she doesn't comethrough, somebody is going to die and
it won't be from fright. Well, Holiday, you finally made it.

(21:21):
You were towed into Katalena hockey, watched for a ticket, and threw right
back to town. This is adventure. You'd better stick with the more dangerous
sports like croquet or something. Susie. Oh, I forgot about Susie.
She will wonder what's happened. I'mfour days late for lunch. She's not

(21:44):
here. I guess she got hungry. She's not here holiday? But I
am Yeah, who are you getin that office? All right? All
right, all right? Now what'sthis all about? I want to know
where you've been for four days.I don't think I've had the pleasure.
It may not prove to be apleasure. What I suspect is true?

(22:07):
Where's Marie Gordon? Marie Gordon? From your expression of surprise, I gather
you know what I'm talking about.Did you catch any fish? Or was
it larger game you were after? Not knowing who you are, I'm at
a disadvantage, disadvantage is even greater. Now, how do you talk?
Or do I shoot? Oh?Do I have a choice? No?

(22:32):
In that case, I'll talk. You are listening to Box thirteen starring Allen
Ladd as Dan Holiday and now backto Box thirteen starring Alan Ladd as Dan

(23:04):
Holiday Holiday. You can run intomore trouble than a kid playing football with
a pea hid You know, Idon't think this guy's in the mood to
believe you just got bopped on thebean and taken for a boat ride.
He thinks you're in on the deal. Yeah, but what's the deal?

(23:26):
Come on holiday talk. Oh,I'd love to, but what do we
talk about about five minutes? Andif by then you haven't told me where
you and Marie have been instead offishing, I'm gonna pull this trigger.
Now. Believe me. I caughtfive tune and ten albacore four sword fish
in a pair of blistered hands. And that's no fish story. Hey,

(23:48):
where you're going over here to turnup your radio? You see, I'm
very considered of others. It's avery big gun, makes a very big
noise. I don't want to disturbthe neighbors when it goes off. Okay,
mister whatever your name is, I'mgoing to tell you exactly what happened,

(24:12):
and if you don't believe me,you can start shooting. You sound
very brave, Holliday, and Iact very dumb. Now. I know.
It was stupid of me to accepta blind invitation to visit a boat
named the Rootie J because when Igot there, a tough character in tight
pants use my head for a dinner? Gone? Somebody slugg you? Yeah,

(24:33):
and I've got the bump to proveit. This character's name wouldn't begin
with the letter M. As faras I'm concerned. It ended with a
N N Y, So it wasmany or going. While I was unconscious,
I was tucked Betty buy in thecabin of the boat. When I
woke up, I was gazing intothe lovely blue eyes of one miss Marie

(24:55):
Gordon, a woman I have neverseen before in my life. Then I
support was you in this total strangerwhen fishing for four days? Now you
took the words right out of mymouth. We'll find some more and tell
me. You didn't ask any questions, but you were just brought back home
with salt spray in your hair,a beautiful tan, and nothing else.
I asked plenty of questions, towhich I got plenty of no answers.

(25:18):
And for your information, I wasn'tbrought back home. Oh you swam.
No. I rode ten miles allaway to Catalina. There I caught a
plane, took a cab from theairport, and found you here waiting for
me. That, brother, ismy story. You turned off the radio.

(25:41):
What's the trouble? No gunplay? No gunplay? Great to buy the
change of heart holiday. I understandyou're quite an author, but even you
couldn't make up a story like thatone. So holiday got rid of them,
mister man with a gun. Anybut what about Susie. She's not

(26:04):
here, she's not at home.Start times, they'll know what happened to
her. Well, if it isn't, then holiday, have a nice vacation.
Oh wonderful, Jonesie. Hey haveyou seen Susie? Not since the
other morning she came in with awire telling her to take a few days
vacation. Hey, who told herto take a vacation? Now? You
did a cart, don't you remember, Jonesy. Sometimes my left hand just

(26:29):
doesn't know what my right hand iswriting. Let's you go? She didn't
say. She came in with aman wearing tight pants. She looked for
the mail. It wasn't any Theywent away. Man with a tight pants
Manny, I'll see you later. No, not, Wait, all this
mail came while you've been gone ina box too? Box? What could
this be? Maybe candy? Oh, nobody loves me that much. Wait,

(26:53):
but you hear something ticking that boxright now to take you think it's
you? Think you better get thatthing on he here, Pa Jones,
I had a police headquarters. Getit out of the building fast. It
might blow up any minute. You'vewritten in many a taxicab holiday, But
this is the first one you've takenwith a maniac in the driver's seat,

(27:15):
in the bomb in the back,Inspective Blake, that's my man, you
say this thing? Yeah, itsounds like a clock in there. Come
on, hurry, where are wegoing? I got a bomb shutter down
the basement. That's great, butwhy take the bomb with us? We're
going to open that box. That'sall I need. I've been talking for

(27:37):
thirty minutes. We're safe now,Who thanks, Inspective Sadie. Mind shoving
my heart back in the police forthere's nothing to worry about, my boy.
We'll open up this beauty and seewhat we've got. Holy smum,
these are jewels holiday? Now?What made you think this was a time
bomb. I haven't a versioned anythingthat ticks, and I haven't a version

(27:59):
too. People like you come inhere talking about time bombs when all they've
heard her from loose jewels clicking together. Well I'm sorry, Inspector. Well
I think I'll beat it. Justlet me wrap up those stuff. Oh
no, you don't, No,you don't. Those jewels stay here.
You can prove ownership. How won'tyou get them to whom do they belong?
Give me about thirty minutes, Inspector, and I think I'll be able

(28:19):
to answer you. So that's whatit was. Holiday, a stunt to
smuggle jewels in the box thirteen Noless at Marie Gardens. She's a clever,
clever girl. No one of themysterious character at the office was waving

(28:42):
that gun at me. Oh thinkof what would have happened if I'd tried
to lie to him. Come onholiday, You've got places to go and
some people to meet. I wishyou're worried about you rote or let wait
the holiday. Oh that's okay, captain. Hey, what I came here

(29:03):
for was to locate miss Gordon.Do you know where I can find her?
She's a popular woman. Two othermen come are looking for her?
Two men, yep. One wasa smooth looking sort of feller. The
other was a tough but tight fansthat you mention it? Yes, he
was here when we got what happened? Did you hear the conversation? Only
that the tough one was to goright quick to a place called ramblers In

(29:27):
and wait. Then the other manarrived. Yep, he seems sore about
something. They got in a cartogether and drove off. That's the last
I see them. Captain, you'reterrific. When my blistered hands hel up
You and I are going back afterthe mole and it got away all right?

(29:49):
Man? Where do you think you'regone? Eliphant? Ain't mister Holiday
again? Only this time I don'tthink you were invited. Yeah, that's
right, And this time you're theone who's going pretty by pleasant dreams,

(30:11):
Mannie. Yeah, just in caseyou get restless in your sleep, let
me tie in bed with his failingWhy I didn't have time to ask you
in which Kevin there were? Manny? For those angry voices I heard on
the line, I don't think theywould be coming from honeymooners for the last

(30:34):
time. Where are those jewels?Don't threaten me, Spaulding. Manny's right
outside. One call for me andhe'd be all over you like a rug.
I gave you the money to payoff the smugglers. I want the
jewels. At first, the boysdidn't want to turn over the stuff.
When they finally did, I thoughtthey might try to get it back.
So you went off on a fishingtrip with a man named Holiday. Why

(30:55):
certainly and for a good reason.Holiday has the jewelry? What how did
he get into this? You knowabout his ad in the startime? What
about it? And I thought wemight have trouble with the boys. I
had to think of a place toput it where they wouldn't expect to find
it. So I send it toBuck thirteen. Where are you going?

(31:21):
Hey, another visit of Dan Holiday. Don't bother, I'm here, Manny,
Manny, I'm afraid Manny won't hearyou what. He's taking his nap
and you look sleepy too, say, Manny's blackjack works fine. Your friend's

(31:42):
fawling is sleeping like an infant. No now what now? What's this about
my having that smuggled to me?You could share in it with me?
You're very genness. I can affordto be duty free and with Spaulding's wealthy

(32:02):
client. Oh you decided to cutSpaulding, and after all, why should
I? What do you mean I'drather cut you in, mister Holliday.
No thanks, I'm not interested. But that's foolish. Think of all that
money. I am, but I'malso thinking of a great tag for the
yarn I'm going to write. Butwhat will that get? You Royalties,

(32:27):
Lady Royalties. This is Box thirteenstarring Ellen Ladd as Dan Holiday, Well

(32:53):
Holiday, prepare yourselfer and I toldyourself from Susie when she comes in,
brother, wait till she finds outshe was right about those smugglers and my
being shangho Holidame. What is itinspected? We've been after that smuggling gang
for a long time. That GordonDame hadn't gotten so greedy and tried at
Chiselong spailing, we wouldn't have caughtup with him so soon. And of

(33:15):
course, sir you helped a bittoo. Coming from a police inspector,
those are very kind words. Well, Susie, it's about time you showed
up. Oh hello, mister Holliday. My what a beautiful tan. Catch
any fish all kinds? Tell me, Susie, where have you been out
of town? The wires yet meto to take a vacation for five or

(33:37):
six days. Oh the wire Iscent which I didn't send. Well anyway,
you didn't decify which, so misterHolliday, I took six I see.
And mister Holliday, yes, Susie, you know the nice man.
And I went down to box theirteam with Yes, Well, I told
him how I warned you about beingtaken by smugglers And do you know what

(33:58):
he's said? What did he say? He said you were right about the
smuggles. They wouldn't hit you onthe head with a sloop, they'd use
a black jack. Oh fine, next week, same time. Allan Ladd
stars as Dan Holiday in Box thirteen. Allen Ladd appears through the currency of

(34:30):
Paramount Pictures and may currently be seenin Wild Harvests. Box thirteen is directed
by Ted Hedeger with original story byFrank hart Tausi. The part of Susie
is played by Sylvia Picker. Originalmusic was composed and conducted by Rudy Schrager.
This is a Mayfair production. Welcomeback, Uh. This episode of

(35:01):
Box thirteen and UH featured uh StacyHarris, who is just absolute veteran character
actor. UM. You hear himas well on Pat Novak and he did
a lot of Jack Webbs shows aswell. This episode was interesting because Susie

(35:22):
really did get uh really did getproven right. Uh. This was this.
I guess there's a big moral inhere about responding to personal ads from
or responding to responses from strangers.I have to to imagine that they have
