fan of the show on Facebook,Facebook dot Great Detectives dot net. And
we actually turned to the dragment Facebookpage. You got a comment from Chris
who says, hand, I'm alittle bit of news for you. A
new graphic novel has been released witha reimagining a Box thirteen. It's by
Comictology. It's a great twenty firstcentury adaptation of a great series. Check

(01:11):
it out and I actually found thepress release from Comicscology is created by Dave
Gallagher and Steve Ellis and the storiesThey've got it here. It follows investigative
author Dan Holliday, who has spentthe last several years of his life researching

(01:32):
the secrets behind the mk Ultra project. His latest book has brought him a
degree of notoriety, but a mysteriousnumbered box left on his book signing table
is too much to resist. Onceopen, the box sends him spending on
a harrowing journey of self discovery anddriving mystery What is in Box thirteen?

(01:52):
While inspired by the noir serial ofthe nineteen forties, the reimagining blends in
the orientined action mysteries of the nineteensixties like The Masuring Kennidate, The Prisoner
and The Modesty Blaze, wrapped ina modern tale in a digital medium.
There's gunplay, conspiracy, romance, psychological drama, train chases, motorcycle chases.

(02:13):
In Danger, author Divid Gallagher toldCBR, but at its heart,
it's a story about rediscovering your placein the world after everything in your life
changes forever, so it sounds prettyinteresting. There have been several actually old
time radio shows that have inspired spinoff graphic novels. The most obvious example

(02:38):
was Pat Novac for Hire, andthere was a Yours Truly Johnny Dowler,
as well as The Boston Blackie. And I can definitely appreciate these artists who
are getting inspired by some of theseold radio shows and bringing them to a
new generation through a different media. And you can always hope too that that

(02:59):
will lead to some interest in athe source material, kind of like somebody
doing Othello in space. All right, I want to let you know about

(03:45):
now let's go ahead and listen toBox thirteen The Treasure of HANGLEI thirteen with
the style paramount us Alan ladd asDan Holiday Box thirteen Careless Star Times.

(04:12):
If your advertise me is on thelevel, I think you'll find this worth
your time. Be in the KunHigh Shop in Chinatown at two o'clock tomorrow
afternoon. Pretend you want to buysome jade. Reject the first two pieces
offered, then mentioned the Hangley piecein the window. Buy the hang lea.
This will be worth a lot ofmoney to you. Remember it's the
pun high stoop in Chinatown. Askfor jade, but reject the first two

(04:43):
pieces. Then mentioned the Hangley piecein the window. Go back and wait
for further inspections. That was theletter, no signature. It sounded interesting,
and it was if you like murder. And now back to the Treasure

(05:10):
of Hangley. Another Box thirteen adventurewith Alan Ladd as Dan Holiday. Get
it, mister Holiday, Why shouldyou reject the first two pieces? Ah,
that's what makes the letter interesting,Susie. Why reject the first two
pieces? And then mentioned the Hangleypiece? All right? Why I think

(05:31):
I've got an idea? What isit? Pretty obvious, Susie. Look,
the letter doesn't say anything about identifyingmyself, doesn't No, it doesn't.
Well, if I follow instructions, follow them exactly, I'll be tipping
myself to someone in the store.Do you get it? Oh? Sure?
Who ever wrote the letter will bethere too, waiting for you to
follow instruction. That's a great deduction, and I get it all myself.

(05:57):
You should, okay, Susie,I'm to make like Marco Polo and visit
our Chinese friends. It took mea half an hour to drive to Chinatown,
another ten minutes to find the shopof Quan High. I looked in
the windows. It was the usualline of stuff, backscratchers, quan yins,

(06:18):
bamboo trinkets, red lacquer bulls, but only one piece of jade.
It was roughly square and seemed tohave been broken it It looked like a
part of a bigger piece. SoI went into the shop. There were
six or seven other people besides myselfand well they were looking at curios,
and no one paid any attention tome. Then a young Chinese clerk smiled

(06:40):
and came over to me. Ohyes, can I help you please?
Oh yes, I am. Iwant to buy a piece of jade.
Yes, sir, you want acertain color. Oh, I don't know.
This is a very nice pizza. It is what we call the mutton
fat color. It's very nice, but not quite what I want. A
ring, perhaps coff links is snuffbottle, I don't know. You see,

(07:01):
it's for a gift. Oh,this piece is very fine, sir,
and the carving is excellent, butit is not very old. There's
a piece in the window, theonly piece. What is that the piece
in the window, sir. Yes, it's a hang lea piece, isn't
it. Well, if you willplease to follow me, sir. But

(07:23):
the pieces in the window, Iknow, sir, But for that piece
you would have to see mister Quan. This way, please, if you
please, sir, in here,I will send for mister Quan. You
will please excuse me now, sir. The other customers, yeah, sure,
thank you, here's nothing at atYou went out, and I heard

(07:49):
the key turn in the lock ofthe door. For a moment, I
was left alone in a room thatwas different in the rest of the story,
very different. Instead of the usualjunk that tourists by, the room
was a treasure house. Rose quoteswonderful jade's screens, beautiful porcelain bowls have
seemed to be lighted from inside blackaware that's shone like satin in the dim

(08:11):
light. I was looking around me. Well, good afternoon, sir ah,
how do you do mister Kuan?I am mister Quan. Please to
sit down sir, thank you.May I help you? Mister? My
name is Holiday, Dan Holiday.I am mister Holiday. Um your klerk

(08:31):
told me i'd have to see youabout that Hangley jade in the window.
Yes, that is true, youwarn the piece, mister Holiday. Yes,
I'd like to buy it one moment. It is strange that a hungry
piece has lain in the window fortwo weeks. Now you are the first
to ask for it. I amI saw it like it. Of course

(08:54):
you are a man of excellent taste. It is a very fine piece,
incredibly ancient and incredibly valuable. Ohmaybe maybe I can't afford it, the
Hanley piece, mister Quan. Thankyou lad. That is all. Yes,
mister Quan does he always lock thedoor when he leaves this room?

(09:18):
There are very valuable things in thisroom, mister Holiday. Ah, I
see, But the Hangley piece. Is it valuable, mister Quan, Yes,
mister Holiday, so valuable that thereis no price on it. Odd
that you should ask for it.You have no idea how odd? It
is a piece of a larger work, at twelve inches by twelve inches to

(09:41):
be exact, this is only onethird of the original. May I see?
Certainly it looks like a wonderful pieceof jade. Do you know what
Confucius said about jade? Well,I seem to have heard quite a few
things Confucius was supposed to have said, but I doubt if any of them
would fit the bell us. Now, yes, but Confucius said that jade

(10:05):
is like truth. It gives outthe bright rainbow, and it shows a
pure spirit among the hills and dreamtruth gives out a bright rainbow. That's
a very pretty figure of speech, mister Klan. Yeah, truth is very
often a figure of speech, isit not, mister Holiday. Yes,

(10:26):
I'm afraid you're right. But aboutthis piece, Oh yes, you will
note the calving, very beautifully done. There's a Chinese characters, aren't there?
Yeah? It is too bad theother two thirds of the entire piece
are missing. Oh why is that? I mean, beyond the fact that
it seems a shame there on sucha magnificent thing. Foolish old Chinese legend,

(10:48):
mister Holiday. It says that hewho translates the writing will be led
to a treasure beyond all price. But you'd have to have all three pieces.
You would need all three pieces, and where are they? The two
I do not know. Say,well, mister Quang, how much for
the space? Mister Holiday? Ithas no price? You mean it's not

(11:09):
for sale. It is not forsale, But I don't understand. It
was in the window, yes,and no one inquired about it, perhaps
because collectors would not be interested ina broken piece. That could be.
That still doesn't explain why you hadit in your window and yet not have
it for sale. Because, misterHoliday, the piece is yours. I

(11:30):
beg your pardon. What did yousay? The hungly piece is yours.
There is no price on it,but I can't take it without paying for
it. You ask for it,of course I did, mister Quan,
But I'm prepared to pay for it. I am sorry. There is no
price. The piece is yours forthe taking. Well, suppose someone else
had come in and ask for it, would you have given it to anyone,

(11:52):
only to one who asked for itby name as you did. I
don't understand. Truth, mister Holidayis a figure of speech. I have
told you the truth. The homelypiece is yours. Please take it no,
if you will excuse me just themoment, mister Quarn, suppose I
refuse to walk out with us Itis a matter of indifference. To me,

(12:15):
that is a matter of curiosity. How much is the piece? Worse?
That depends upon who has it.That means that is hard to say.
To a collector. The Hongly piecewould be worth there perhaps no more
than a hundred dollars. To you, it is worth what you make it
to me. To me, itis priceless. Ah, here is Lund

(12:41):
Lund. Please show mister Holiday tothe door. His business here is concluded.
It will be great honor mister Quarts. So well, go by,
mister Holiday, and may the bedroots upon your roof. May the quiet
asked faint? Where the bet isa Chinese symbol for good fortune? Goodbye?

(13:01):
Pleased to come with me, misterHoliday. Sure you won't change your
mind, mister Klan, the Hangleypiece it is yours. Perhaps we shall
meet again, mister Holiday. Ohwait just a minute, mister Quan,
he is gone. Mister Holiday,Now if you were pleased to follow me?
All right? Thanks? Is thereanything else you wish, mister Holiday,

(13:24):
Yes, I think there is,and that is I wish someone would
tell me why I advertise for adventureand get mixed up in things like this.
Goodbye. So with the Hangley piecetucked under my arm and a great
big question mark tucked into my hat. I left quan Lee's place for a

(13:48):
moment. I stood in front ofthe store. No one followed me out,
although I knew that whoever had sentme the letter was watching. So
I drove home and waited in myapartment. I didn't wait long. Hello
Holiday, Yes it is I'm theone who sent you the letter. Bring
the Hangley piece to seven twenty oneSouth Ferry Street, Room six. Just

(14:13):
a minute. How do you knowI've got the piece? I was in
the store this afternoon. Why didn'tyou ask me for it? There?
You're wasting time. Please bring theHangley piece. You will be sorry.
I was that address again, twentyone South Ferry Street, Room six,
in the name. You've got allyou need to know. I'll be waiting.
Well, well, well, allright, mister south Ferry Street.

(14:39):
We'll see what you have to offer. Please go back in, mister Holiday.
Oh I've got company, Please goback. Sit down. I just
gotta sit down. Oh thank you? Won't you? Yep? So much
younger than I thought you'd be.Oh is that so? Keep pointing a

(15:00):
gun at me and I can ageten years. You have quite a sense
of humor for a murderer. Murder. Well, this is news. Go
on, miss ring Greta Loring. How do you do? Doesn't the name
Loring mean anything, mister Holiday, beyond the fact that it belongs to a
very pretty girl holding a very uglygun. I'm completely at lost. Lying
seems to be another of your doubtfulaccomplishments. Oh yes, I'm very talented,

(15:22):
but I'm no good at puzzles. You see, I give up too
easily. I had a hard timefinding you, especially since you changed your
name. No, this is news. I'm a murderer, a liar,
and I'm living under an alias. This afternoon. You gave yourself away by
getting a Hanley jade from that shop. Sooner or later I knew i'd trace
you through that piece of jade,so you were there too. I've watched

(15:43):
that shop the days waiting for youto get the Hanley, and now that
I've got it, I'm going totake it then kill you in that order.
I suppose give it to me rightthere on the table in front of
you. It was a long timeago that you killed my father. I
was a little girl, then, lady, how you've grown up complete with

(16:04):
a gun in a murderous desire tokill me. I've had that desire for
a long time, ever since Ifound my father did murdered. Go on,
Miss Lowing, what then? Youknow as well as I do?
And being charming and flip won't help. I like this, Slowing. Maybe
you've got the wrong man. Haveyou thought of that? After all,
you said, I seem to bemuch younger than you thought i'd All I

(16:26):
know is that you went after theHangley jade. No one else in the
world but you would want that piece. No one would else would know what
it means. That's circumstantial evidence,Miss Low, Say where you are?
You're through talking, Mister Holiday orshall I call you Vincent? You can
call me anything you like, butthink before you squeeze that trigger. I've
thought quite a lot. No,I'm going to take the jade, all

(16:51):
right? Yeah, giving it tome won't solve everything. Stay there,
No, don't. But the slamof the dormos flowing was gone. So
was the Hangley jade, and sowas a piece of my coat with a
bullet from her gun ripped through it. But I had the gun. Maybe

(17:11):
it could be traced, But firstI had to see a man about a
piece of jade at seven to oneSouth Ferry Street. Yes, who is
it? Holiday? All right?Just a minute, come on in now

(17:37):
give me the Hangley piece. Sorry, but you are about a half hour
too late. What are you talkingabout? Well, I haven't got it.
Maybe this will show you. Idon't like jokes. Now look,
whatever your name is, take thegun out of my ribs developing analogy,
Give me the Hangley piece. Whathave I told you? A girl who
called herself grattel Loring took it awayfrom it longing. You have that name,

(17:59):
right, I have every reason toremember it. But good, where
is she? I don't know? Were you all right? Turn around?
Face the window. I'll look fellowto turn around. Now where did that
girl go? I told you,I don't know. How did she find

(18:19):
you the same way you did?She was in Quane High Shop this afternoon.
Uh huh oh, came mister Holiday. Thank you for running that errand
for me. And now back toRot thirteen and Dan Holiday's newest adventure,

(18:45):
The Treasure of hang Ley. Itwas a nice hit at the top of
my head when the birds and thebees left my skull. I sat up
and start. I started to getto my fate. When you're feeling better,
mister Holiday, mister Quan, ohhim fluttered. You recognize my voice,

(19:08):
But you are feeling better except fromyour head, I couldn't ask for
anything more. I'm sorry I didnot arrive in time to save you that
inconvenience. But now that you arehere, why why am I here?
I came to see your friend today, I have no friends. Wait
a moment, I shall turn onthe light. I could use some most

(19:32):
on what's going on? It's hereyou gave our friendly hungry jade. Oh
wait, a man, just amoment before you once say you had better
look in this little altcove. Look, mister Holiday, who's that? He's
dead? Yeah, quite dead, stabbed in the back. But he's not

(19:55):
the man I came here to see. I'm afraid no, I wish he
were all that. Who is thisone of the men I have been seeking
for ten years? Ten years?Look, mister Kuan, I have a
large headache. You're no aspiring withyour your Chinese puzzles. The man you
came to see was named Benson. That doesn't help the dead man. There
is a man named Tesha. Andwhat about a man named Loring? Oh

(20:18):
you know a man named Loring.I met his daughter to day. His
daughter. No, I am beginningto see. But I presume you gave
mister Benson the hungly jade you gotfrom me today. I did not.
Mister Loring's daughter releave me of it. She has it, you know she
has. I have only your wordfor that. That's all you're gonna get,
mister Kuan. I think you meanthat very well, mister Holiday.

(20:42):
I should have to leave now.Oh, no, you don't. There's
a murdered man here. How doI know you didn't kill him? That
there's a reasonable question. You haveonly my word that I did not kill
him, and you'll go with meto the police. Oh it's funny,
h No. I was thinking ofsomething, a proverb, and being Chinese,

(21:07):
I am permitted one proverb. I'vegot one for you, mister Quan.
A burden a hand is worth twoin the bush right now, you're
the number one bird. Very good, mister Holiday. But my proverb is
more to the point. Two menof different minds must soon say goodbye.
We're going to the police. MisterQuan. You'll leave me no alternative,

(21:27):
but this would you use that gun? I am afraid I would if you
tried to stop me. But pleasedo not blame me, mister Holiday.
This is the fault of my ancestors. Your ancestors, they invented gunpowder.
Goodbye, And so there I was, but where I called the police and

(21:55):
requorted the murder without doing my name. I didn't want to stick around because
I had other things to do.I had a bullet hole through my coat
and out of my head in abig bunning desire to catch up with mister
Benson and miss Loring, not tomention a certain mister Quan. The only
lead I had was Gretta Loring's gunthat I'd taken from him. If she
had bought it in the city,it would be registered. So I made

(22:15):
one more phone call and bought outwhat I wanted. Her address there's no
a part from the building and herpartner was number eight. That's the buzzer.
Yes, good evening, miss Loring. How did you find me?
Oh? I had to. Ialways return things that I borrowed. I

(22:37):
believe this is your gun. Whatare you going to do? Play?
Questions and answers? Please get outof here. This afternoon. You call
me a murderer. Why I thoughtyou were someone else who Benson? Yes?
But I know that now? Oh, now, she tells me after
she puts a bullet through my coatand almost loring two inches higher, and

(23:00):
you'd have had yourself a carps meI disliked. Bring the carps. Now
you'll talk. Benson killed my fatherin China ten years ago. It seems
you also killed a man called Fisher. David Fisher David or not? He
is just a number at the Morgueby now. Then then Benson is still

(23:22):
alive. I think he is.And you came here, of course,
why not? But don't you seewhat you've done done? Think about it.
Oh, you wouldn't know where tofind you. But I told him
I met you. You'll keep trackof me and come here. Listen.
Have you still got that Hanley's jade? Yes? All he wants that if

(23:42):
you give it to him, maybeyou'll go away. My father was killed
because he had the Hanley piece. What is there about that piece? There
were three pieces, all part ofthe same screen. There was something about
a treasure, and the carving onthe screen would head to the treasure.
Yes, you have one piece Bensonhas the other two want to kill your
father to get the other kil Fisherto again, and they'll come here after

(24:03):
this third piece. Come on,we've got to get out here. Wait.
Why's your phone? All right? There? But manna call the police?
Not yet, mister Holiday Kuan.Yes, I followed you, mister
Holiday. Then, because I fearMiss Loring would not extend their hospitality to
me, I came up the fireescape, Quan Quan. My father told
me Loring. Yes, your father, Fisher and Benson killed an old powers

(24:29):
priest in China to get the Hungryscreen and its secret. My father never
killed any one, I'm afraid hedid. But there are three pieces off
the screen. Yes, mister Holiday. The three men did not trust one
another. They broke the screen upinto three pieces, one valueless without the
other two. Why why did theydo that? Because they had to leave
China and go their separate ways. They arranged to meet later. But Benson

(24:52):
killed Long. Yes, but Loringdid not have his piece of the hung
Lee. I thought it before Bensongot to him, and you put the
piece in the wind of the trap. Benson. Why, mister Quin why
the towers priest was my honorable father. Oh I didn't know. I didn't
know that. I'm sure you didnot. I've been all over the world

(25:15):
waiting, waiting, hoping that sooneror later the murderers of my father would
trap themselves. Two up dead andthe third Benson. Yes, Benson,
he let him in, mister Holiday. Let me know, your crazy kwine
is a killer, said let himin. One moment. I would take
the gun you put on the table, and mister Holiday give it to me.
Take it, thank you. NowI have two guns, and mister

(25:37):
Benson probably has one. Let himin, mister Holiday. If you think
I'm gonna open that door and lethim in, you're crazy. Two guns?
Are you afraid? Mister Holiday? All right, slow and get back
thanks to the law. Now,Hugh, get back in there, not
come in, Benson? Well theway up? Who's that? Come in?

(25:59):
Mister Benson? Holiday, stand infront of me right where you are?
All right, go ahead and shootsHoliday. That's right. I'm sorry,
mister Holiday, but you seem tohave been caught between the dragon and
the tiger. I want that Hanleypiece. I'll give it to Let's do
that, Miss Loring, give itto him. That's when you've already killed

(26:19):
two men. A third will makeany difference. A Hanley piece, Miss
Loring on the table, take it, take it? Good enough? All
right, Holiday, move in frontof me, always in front of me.
Now stop hand me the jade you'remiss Loring. Hand it to me.

(26:41):
That's it now. I'm going tomove back toward the door. If
you shoot, Holiday gets it.Stop right here, mister Holiday. My
life means nothing because I have devotedit to this moment. But I regret
this inconvenience to you. Go on, think what you're doing. Benson won't
get away. The police will havehis description will be picked up within an

(27:03):
hour. Nice streaming Holiday, misterKlan, don't stay where you are.
I regret, mister Holiday. Justthe way quickly, twister away. It's
the Holiday. I'm all right.I got out of the way. But
mister Benson has gone to his ancestors. Mister Quinn, are you all right?
Yes, it's quite all right, thank you. Go ahead. Let's

(27:27):
Lauren call a doctor fast. No, no, please, the three pieces
of the screep. Give them tome. You will find two of them
in mister Benson's pocket. But misterKlin, you're hurt. Badly. You've
got to have a doctor. No, that would do no good, Old
Chinese Brovo. Greatest code is hewho feels this. And sorry, mister

(27:53):
Quinn. They holy pieces. Pleaseput them together, all right? That
they are the treasure of Homely righthere, treasure but not gold. My

(28:18):
people learn centuries ago that real treasureis not gold. Of Homely is written
here jade. But happy is theman who is contented with his lot to

(28:38):
mist quant mist Quand it's all rightthis morn, mister Quants. Contented.

(29:02):
You mean that was all there wasto the tregonister Holliday, just that proverb.
That's right, Susan. Maybe it'sthe best after all. You see,
we beat our brains out going aftersomething, and when we've got it,
the thing on the other side ofthe hill always looks better. Happy
is the man who is contented withhis lap Gee. You know something,

(29:23):
mister Holliday, what's Susan? Ican't think of anything silly to say.
That's as it should be. GoodNights next week, same time, through

(29:44):
Batch thirteen is directed by Richard Saville, with this Week's original story by
Mark Coplin. Original music is composedand conducted by Rudy Schrager. Martin Susie
is played by Sylvia Picker, andproduction is supervised by Verne Carstenson. Watch
thirteen is a Mayfair Duroywood watch forAllen lad in his latest Paramount picture,

(30:10):
Welcome Back. I think that misterQuan has been my favorite guest character of
the entire series, um at leastwho's been saing. The insane ones have
been um entertaining, but there's thischaracter was definitely very well played. They
didn't have detailed credits on box thirteen, but uh, definitely hats off to

(30:34):
them and to me. I thinkthis does show one of the great strengths
of the detective genre, where atits best there's there's somewhat of a message
behind it, particularly the in ahard boiled story like this, because the
message of the story flows from theevents of it. The more the one

(30:57):
challenge you get kind with the lastintellectual detectives or the more intellectual detectives is
the crimes are not seen as havingthe same impact because it's played more as
a game. So that's another thoughton this. All right, Well,

(31:18):
We're gonna go ahead and wrap itup. Got a comment, Send it
