This is the Brailan Edwards Show. Hope you had a
great weekend everybody. I'm Matt Shephard and Justin Sattawa is
filling in for Brailan. Who's smacking that little white dimpled
ball around some golf course out there. Hopefully he's doing well.
He's playing in the Michigan Football Golf Outing. So we'll
have some pictures and we'll have some stories from that tomorrow.
Justin good to have you on board. Of course, kool
aid is here, KG is here, and Ricky is here.
(01:34):
How was everybody's weekend? Did everybody roll in and out?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
And it was good?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
It was good.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
I watched a lot of golf. How'd you like that
open score?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah? See, I was way off. I thought about that
right away. I said ten under. Braylan said thirteen under.
Scottie Scheffler steamrolls.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Everybody you skipped over another guess say sixteen, And you
guys looked at me like I was crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, you know, I'm a pull to tape. Hey, I
don't have to take tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
No, I believe you. I totally believe you. Let's just
make sure we give him some love for that. Yeah,
because because because he would have won the pool, right,
I mean I was thinking.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
About it the entire time. He was fourteen under. I
think after the second day, the third day, and I
was just like third, I should have bet. I should
have bet, you guys, I'd be doubting myself.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
You know what. I apologized. I did not remember sixteen
under part. I used ten because last year on different cores,
I get it. Last year Xander Shoffley won it nine under. Yeah,
I don't think anybody would have guessed except for Ricky
sixteen seventeen under part and he could have been better
than that. That's how dominant he was. He's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Saying with Scotty, Scotty was playing good.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
That's what I'm saying, justin I'm saying. I'm saying Scotty
could have been better than seventeen. How was your weekend?
Speaker 6 (02:46):
My weekend was great, oh, man, I was. I had
a great time with my sister and my girlfriend and
her boyfriend Max. It was a great time. So it
was a double date, Yes, double date once you go
over to the concert and enjoyed it. I had a
great time and recharged my batteries and ready to get
to work. So I'm very excited to be here today.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
All right, Yeah, we're gonna have some good conversation. Kool aid.
How was yours?
Speaker 6 (03:09):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (03:09):
You know what?
Speaker 8 (03:09):
The weekend was awesome.
Speaker 7 (03:10):
Man rested a little bit on Saturday, but went down
to l C and with Bradley Edwards.
Speaker 8 (03:15):
And took in the Big Three action and it was
a lot more people down there than I thought. It
was lunch man.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up. KG you have
a good weekend, always good. You go to your first
what KG don't want to be on a microphone today?
For some reason, he's chosen to be out of the
chair today. First, that's your first mud Hens game. How
much did you enjoy it? Okay, it's it's a nice ballpark,
(03:43):
it really is, there, goes Ricky. Ricky. Yeah, so were you?
Were you watching certain minor league talent that the Tigers
hope to call up someday?
Speaker 8 (03:57):
Well, I mean, how you lee?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (03:58):
You know, he didn't do too bad. I'm trying to
think of who else was out there? Who was the
other guy they just sent down? I just I can't remember.
But either way, I believe they got the Like I said,
I was working during it, so I didn't get a
chance to just go out.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
So you're not watching it per se? Yeah, yeah, I
got so. Yesterday I did see Brailan. I didn't see
kool Aid. He was, you know, working the crowd with
the uh you know, the dignified people out there at
the at the Amps game, and I got my am.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Sure shout out. He killed it on socials.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
They were I agree with kool Aid. I could not
believe how many people were down there me either.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
They He showed me the picture a second ago. I
was like, oh my god, it looks like it sold out.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, it wasn't, but there were a lot of fannies
in the seats. I thought there would be. I don't know,
twenty five hundred three thousand people kool aid. How many
did you say it was down there.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
I don't know how many were down there, but I've
gotta at least eight. I'm getting this picture set up
right now so people can see it. It was a
decent amount of people.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Man, oh wow, later.
Speaker 8 (05:01):
I have it up here on the screen. This was
later in the day.
Speaker 7 (05:05):
Yeah, I told I was told that it was a
lot more people at the game than even what you
see here. And they said it was a cool thing.
Throughout the entire day, you have families that were coming down.
You have people that enjoyed those older basketball players, the
Dwight Howard's of the of the World and such, and
then they were looking forward to the iceman Joe Johnson,
Andy Triumplify as well.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah maybe obviously you're just watching the iceman George Gervin.
Joe Johnson was injured, so you didn't get a chance
to see him. I had a couple of Piston's legends
ask me, how come all these teams have names we
know and you guys don't. Which is Detroit? And I said, well,
Joe Johnson, it was the team was built around Joe Johnson. Sir, Yeah,
(05:48):
Miami has you know Lance Stevenson, Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers.
Guys you recognize. I think you know. The league's in
his eighth year. We're not gonna do a ton of
time on this, but league is in the eighth year eighth.
There are things that can do to make it more appealing,
like bring Detroit talent to Detroit. So I would ask
(06:09):
you if a guy who is from Detroit played on
the Detroit Ams, probably more likely to go down and
check him out. Let's just SAE and he's not from Detroit.
Let's just say Trey Burke was available, Okay? Or Chris
Allen who plays for another team in the league, who
played at MSU. Again, Chris Allen's not from Detroit, Trey
Burk's not from Detroit. Both played in the state. People
(06:31):
can at least recognize and associate with him. Do you
think that would help?
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Yes, one hundred percent. I think having a Wolverine or
a Spartan there would one hundred percent help if Trey
Burke was there for me personally, Trey Burke ignited my
love for Michigan basketball when I was eleven years old,
So I would have one hundred percent went down there
for Trey Burke. I would have even went down there
for Joe Johnson. Though I love Iojoe, I think that
he is an intriguing player to watch. I think he
(06:56):
is why this league is so special is because he
has that that ability to really just cross someone up
and create his own space on the court, and that's
what this league is about. So I really am intrigued
with this league. I chap in every once in a while.
I do think it's intriguing, and I think that when
there are these players that are coming back, you haven't
gotten to see, especially in a primary role on a team,
(07:16):
because a lot of these guys fall down into the
last rotation of the bench. But they're good enough because
they are volume scorers to still volume score So I
do think it is intriguing.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
I do, and it's the reason Johnson's a three time
league MVP. I was just really proud of Detroit because
there were a lot of people. The ownership group is
from the area, from the state, but doesn't live here,
so there was a big question mark. And I actually
went up to ice Cube during the game and said
to him, you know, I don't listen Tony your music,
but I'm just kidding. But I did say to him, look,
(07:49):
thanks for being here, appreciate it. Your crew's been really
good to work with, and I hope Detroit's doing it
proud and he's like absolutely, like everything was first class.
There were dignitaries, including Braylan back in the players club.
Speaker 8 (08:04):
You don't see that.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
In any other team in this league.
Speaker 7 (08:09):
I know it's only eight, but Matt, that's where I
was gonna go with this thing you talk about why
doesn't Detroit get those big players right now? I think
a lot of it has to do with the fact
of everything you're saying, Detroit shows up and shows out.
That was the theme of my basically recap video of
the Big Three, is that every event we put on,
I think people know they're gonna support what has Detroit
on it and what's done well. And I thought that
(08:31):
the Big Three. I thought Game Above, I thought the
Detroit Amplifiers. I thought that they all put on from
the introduction of the team, which you did a good
job hosting the event, to what you saw yesterday. And
I do believe that sometimes when you're trying to make
this league that much more popular than probably sending out
popular players to where the passion is a little bit less.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
I'll tell you, I love your passion, and I think
you're right for the most part, because I've said the
same thing about the city. There have been plenty of
examples where it's been disappointing. Okay, seriously, I mean there's
whether it be hockey tournaments at formerly Joe Louis Arena
or at Little Caesars that aren't necessarily sold out football games.
(09:12):
You know, we're supposed to be a football crazed town.
How many people go to the game above Sports Bowl?
I know last year was Toledo and pitt It was
a decently sized bowl, but it's not like we're packing
things in Okay. I it was a very inexpensive way
to spend the afternoon. What stunned me is I talked
to a number of different fans. I worked, I worked
(09:33):
all over the arena, sat at different spots, and talked
to a lot of different good folks, and they said.
Some of them were saying, this is the first time
I've ever been in the arena, Oh wow, And I said,
really wow, You've never been to assistance game, You've never
been to a Red Wings game. So I think the
pricing is about right if you're getting four games, if
you stay for all four games. I was just really
(09:54):
proud that Detroit did what they did, and I really
appreciate people like Braylon, Terry Mills, Jamie Edwards, Ron Holland
came out, Jalen Duran came out, a lot of people
showed their face. And when you get, you know, big
sports names in this town show up in an event,
it tells you something about the event.
Speaker 6 (10:12):
I think it does, and I think that it's debut
and Detroit it went as well as it could have.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
I think you're right. I think you're right. Now that's
a high bar for them to meet, because I don't
think there's any I'm not going to sit here and
tell you I watch all four games every weekend. I
don't think there's another city that is hosted that large
of a crowd. Number one and prior to the game
the day before on a Saturday at one o'clock they
(10:39):
have what is called the Young three event, and there
were nonprofit group kids coming down and getting instruction from
a lot of the players and guys. George Gervin Grant
Long spoke to the kids and their parents. There you
go about moving forward in life. Really cool. I love it.
And they all got a basketball, they all got a
(11:01):
water bottle. They all had an unbelievable experience in a
Jersey and that's what I hope is most important. I
hope we bring that forward. There's a phrase called bring
forth greatness. I hope we bring forth that greatness of
the city and the people who make this city up.
Speaker 7 (11:16):
Hey, Matt, everybody I talked to yesterday, I did the
same thing in some of those interviews. I'm going to
be making sure it hits the YouTube either today or tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (11:24):
That's what people were saying.
Speaker 7 (11:25):
They were like, Yo, this event has just been cool
to be at, fun safe, and it was interesting.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Man.
Speaker 7 (11:31):
All the kids that were sitting behind us silt to
the Motor City Jaguars or twelve and other football club.
They got to meet Braylon Edwards and showered him with
a lot of love. But they knew everybody that was
down there. It was interesting to see their generation knowing
like all of the different kind of side characters. And
obviously everybody knows Oshay ice Cube son, but they knew
everybody that were getting down there to take pictures, and
they were even.
Speaker 8 (11:52):
Understanding of some of the players.
Speaker 7 (11:53):
And one of the cool things I saw too is mentors, fathers,
parents and such like educating their kids on the next
wave of or that wave, their era of NBA players.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
If they know some of those.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Guys, Yeah, I hope they also. I had a chance
to visit with Michael Cooper before the game and Julius
Serving before the game and after the game, and you know,
that's my generation. Great players, both Hall of Fame players.
If you think about it, every coach in the league.
You know, Gary Payton was a coach, George Gervin, Michael
(12:29):
Cooper is all. They're all Hall of Fame players. But
if you want to move forward with the league, you've
got to have more than just Hall of Fame coaches,
because they ain't playing. You gotta have. You gotta have
players who people can relate to and recognize. How do
you get that?
Speaker 6 (12:46):
That's the next question for them to especially because the
way that NBA contracts have just soared in the last
couple of years. I think that it's only going to
become more and more of an issue trying to get
big names into the league because most of these players,
if they are even a Tobias Harris level guy, Tobias
Harris has made two hundred and seventy five million dollars
in his career. Yeah, he has no reason to play
(13:08):
in the Big Three. He should be seven.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Why would you want to love it a game? Yeah,
I mean hanging on. You know, we could have said
the same thing about Alan Iverson earlier in the Big Three,
but he gambled all his money away, So in all
likely Yeah, So a lot of those guys do it
for the love of the game, but they're also doing
it a little bit financially. They don't make a lot
of money in that league. No, they did, Okay, So
(13:31):
most of them, to your point, is for the love
of the game.
Speaker 7 (13:35):
So and Matt, you know, that's what they spoke to
when we were down that to reveal the Detroit Amps.
That's what all of them spoke to. We have it
on our Woover Sports socials when we covered it and
I remember you did the kickoff shout out to Anthony
to May one of the part of the ownership group.
But from George Garvin to Joe Johnson to Jeremy Pargo,
who is the captain of the team, that's what they
(13:55):
all spoke to. This is for the love of the game,
this is for getting back into it. And they all
looked around it that we didn't imagine that it could
be this. They looked around and they were like, look
at this, like this is the biggest and the best
role out we've had. And now guess what they stepped
into LCA which is probably one of the best better
turn offs that they've had.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Well, I think it's finest facility. So Little Caesar Arena
does everything right and it really helps that the city
does so many things right. There is a new standard, okay,
And I think there might be if it's not jealousy,
it might be people starting to worry a little bit
about one organization taking it to an extreme in their minds,
(14:37):
not in not in the minds of the ams. But
I think you got to do things right, if you know,
if you want players, if you want success, you got
to do it right. You know, we can we can
pat ourselves on the back here. What we're sports. What
you guys do social media wise? Does you do it right? Yeah?
(14:59):
We've had like fifty team shoutouts already this morning. Yeah.
So when you have that, when you have that social
media presence and you recognize how good it is, that's
a standard that other people, I don't care if it's
a radio station to TVC, they're going to try to
accomplish that. They're going to try to reach that. There's
something to be said for that, right absolutely, speaking of,
(15:20):
you know, setting a standard, I can't say that. Look,
we all drive differently in this area, especially on woodwork
where people are just weaving in and out right until
you hit that that light. H kool aid and I
had a little bit of an issue in the parking
lot today. We're going to get to that first. We're
going to get to Ben Johnson. Justin's got the man,
(15:40):
the myth, the legend who fights for everybody out there.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
Yeah, let me tell you about Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson
is the best in the game. Justice. It just means different,
just means different things to different people. But whether it's

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yeah, horn didn't work for a month when I was
in high school.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Yeah, goodness, Oh that was a high school car. What
was your first What was your first car?
Speaker 5 (18:53):
Nineteen ninety five? It was a dark money green Pontier
Grand m with.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
The dual GT.
Speaker 8 (19:01):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
How much did that cost you?
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Six hundred bucks?
Speaker 2 (19:04):
That's it?
Speaker 5 (19:05):
Yeah, it needed it needed a new transmiss which then
cost me around like eleven hundred. Okay, there's how much
Bondo was on it? And he no, actually the body
wasn't that bad. It was a little rust. But why
did you get rid of that bad I think Radiator?
Speaker 1 (19:18):
I can't remember. It was a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Oh man, yeah ride.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Oh yeah, well I think it worked.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Let's just say it worked justin first car.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
My first car was a Ford Fusion.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
I loved it.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
You did it?
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Wow?
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Well, I mean it was a pretty new for Fusion.
I was lucky enough to get a pretty new car,
and I drove it for four years.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
I loved it.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
Gave it back because the least sure, and now I
have a new Ford Escape that I loved.
Speaker 9 (19:44):
Okay, OKG ninety eight four contours, Rest in peace, Connie.
She was a nice gold color and shout out to you. Yeah, dog,
you got to name.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
The first car.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
You got it Mullah. Her name was Mula.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
What's your current car's name?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Oh you know what? No, you know I didn't name
this one.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
This one? Oh my card?
Speaker 1 (20:07):
Right, so my last one went out. I literally just
grab whatever.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
You know what? My daughter names her cars. I've never
named mine. Really, what's your car? What's the name?
Speaker 6 (20:17):
I call the babble Bill because it's it's it's black
on black.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Gotcha, but it's but you don't have an it's it's
not necessarily unnamed. You don't name it a person's name
or something like that.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
My first car I named a person's name.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
Okay, yeah, KG, what's.
Speaker 9 (20:30):
My last car was named Felix because it was a
for Fiesta.
Speaker 8 (20:34):
You know, no name of the cars. The sweet you
gotta throw it.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
It's the first I heard. It's awesome, though, I think
it's great kool aid.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
Hey, you know what, At this time, I know that
KG and I are definitely brothers. My first car was
an all white ninety seven for Contour.
Speaker 8 (20:50):
Contour game. I was I was bouncing up and you
were bouncing it. That was my first one.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Did you name it? Uh?
Speaker 10 (20:57):
No?
Speaker 8 (20:57):
Because I had no I wasn't even trying to have
people see me.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
That's awesome. My first car was a nineteen seventy seven
yellow Camaro with black leather interior, nice CLA stripes in
the bottle. Cost one thousand bucks. That's it. It's a
lot of money back then, according to my father. Then
I got a seventy eight Firebird muscle cars Burgundy with
(21:21):
white interiors.
Speaker 8 (21:23):
Just stun on us. Why don't you?
Speaker 2 (21:24):
And one of my buddies sat in the back with
a flipping blue pen in his back pocket. Oh no,
got up and blue stripe up my light.
Speaker 8 (21:34):
Oh no, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
I was so pissed. So Firebird didn't have towers for you.
Firebird did not have the tea to to get I.
Speaker 8 (21:43):
Know, I run the cars for you. I'm sitting here
listening to to your car collection.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
I'm thinking it back to my like ninety seven four Consour,
ninety five Vovo, this is in the mid two thousands.
Speaker 8 (21:53):
Meanwhile, you pushing all the muscles.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Yeah, but you know what it's they were. They were
muscle cars, but it's it's not like they were, you know,
in prime shape.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
I dream to drive a prime muscle car. It's actually
one of my life goals is to have my own
old Detroit muscle cars. Go get it, and I get
I'm so excited. But one thing we do have to
go get is a couple of these super chats that
we've missed over this. Alright, fire Away shout out to
Dante one five to one for the four ninety nine
super Chat. Went and saw the movie Eddington and what
(22:23):
a weird interesting movie to watch. But I mean what
Quane Felix plays through weird roles. Really well, I've never
heard of the movie. I've never heard of the movie either.
I am a fan of wa Keane Phoenix. I think
he's a great actor, but I didn't personally have not
seen anything about that movie, even any promo for it.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Cool have you seen? Have you heard of the movie?
Speaker 8 (22:42):
I have no idea what he's going about. A no
an actor. I like his stuff.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Oh yeah, he's not really good.
Speaker 8 (22:47):
I haven't heard that.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
Actually, you know, you never heard of the movie? Kg
you heard of the movie?
Speaker 11 (22:50):
Not?
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Not at all.
Speaker 6 (22:51):
The only movies I've been tapped in lately that I've
been wanting to go see is Superman the f one movie,
and then I'm really excited for Fantastic Four later this week.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
One hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
How many? Okay, so I'm glad you guys are here.
I'm glad you guys can can relate to that stuff
that the interest for me on that is just below
the W n B A. I'm glad. How many? How
many Superman movies are there?
Speaker 6 (23:19):
Do we have any idea there are?
Speaker 8 (23:22):
If you're going back to back in the day.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
I'm not talking Christopher Reeves, I'm talking.
Speaker 8 (23:27):
I wanted them to finish the last one. Just finish
the last story before we started another one. I wanted
to for you there. I was one that, look, let
Harry Cavill do this thing.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
We already doesn't the story always end he lives, right?
Speaker 11 (23:42):
What?
Speaker 8 (23:42):
What?
Speaker 6 (23:42):
What the hell is the end? I wrong? It depends
on what common storyline, because he he does die in
like two or three movies ago. But this is completely Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
Yeah, that's a spoiler alert for anybody out there who
hasn't watched Well, I hope they've watched that movie and
the Final Four they got when he got a Final
Four movie out too, coming.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
Out a fantastic for both of these are brand Final Four.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Final watched the Final Four, it's fantastic.
Speaker 7 (24:10):
You got the right things on your mind right now. Yeah,
we're talking about fantastic.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
God, I'd love to know who's playing in these things.
Speaker 6 (24:17):
Pedro Pascal is playing.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
It doesn't help me.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
He's a guy, is a great actor.
Speaker 6 (24:23):
Yeah, he was a Narcos.
Speaker 8 (24:27):
You don't watch like dramas and stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (24:29):
I watch a lot of sports sports, that's all. I
haven't been able to a TV show.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
And three, I gotta slip outside the box. Right the bubble.
The bubbles got to break. I just I'm gonna tell you, man,
I can't believe they've got a Fantastic four. I thought
that was a long time ago.
Speaker 7 (24:44):
It was.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
Here's the thing people complain about old guys like me,
and then young people go back and watch the old
guys movies from back in the day and try to
make them and try to remake them, because is there
any creativity left in Hollywood?
Speaker 8 (24:59):
Not really?
Speaker 5 (25:00):
You know what it was years ago they twitched up
to buying like ips, so they knew they could sell
merch merchandise because they didn't make the money off the
DVDs and tapes.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
I'm a media nerd here, so they used to make money.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Off the tapes and stuff like that, so they could
you know, they'll spend thirty million on your movie, mess
mess around made thirty five million on the back end.
Once they stopped making that, they want to get something
they can sell a lot of merch from. That's why
you see all these rehassed ips that they just like,
all we can rebrand it and put it back out
like Barbie.
Speaker 6 (25:27):
Yeah, like this is a completely storyline. All of these movies.
The Fantastic Four movie and the Superman are completely new
storylines with new characters that haven't existed yet, Like new actors,
new directors.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Buy that.
Speaker 6 (25:40):
And they're even a new world. Like it's even like
completely a different set.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
It's a new world. They're not in this world. They're
from out of this world.
Speaker 6 (25:47):
Yeah, well, wearing multiverses and stuff, and it's so messy, yeah, point.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
But it's got you. So that's cool.
Speaker 6 (25:55):
I mean, I'm a huge superhero nerd and I always
have been.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
So you're always gonna go, Yeah, I'm always gonna get
So they've got you saying they've got me.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
I've even admitted that the last couple of movies they've
been there's definitely been some flops in there on both
sides of the DC marble.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
But they got your money, but they got me. Okay,
that's that's cool for you, said the f One, who's
the lead actor in The f One, which strike too
for Do you believe he's like get a real race
car drive?
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Well, there's actually the entire of the cast is race
car drivers.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
It's actually except for the main characters. Because he's got
to fall in love with some hot woman, right, and
and we're supposed to believe that he's in an arcade
driving falling in love.
Speaker 6 (26:37):
With Well, they actually recorded they recorded the movie on
F one tracks with F one drivers, Like they sent
Brad Pitt out there in an actual F one car
with the rest of the cars to film the movie.
That's why I'm driving it.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Yes, okay he was driving at that speed.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
I doubt he was driving it at full speed, but
they're going to make it look like he.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Is for sure. Okay, that's cool. It's one of the
things I love most about Miracle, those guys Miracle, outside
of Kurt Russell, obviously, those guys are real hockey players.
Speaker 6 (27:08):
Yes, yeah, you could tell. Yeah, I play hockey, and
it is.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
A huge difference. Look, Mystery Alaska, bad movie, Russell crowe
can't skate. Yeah, so it's the need is, oh, we've
got to get a big name to sell it. Okay,
but is it believable? Yes, that's the big question.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
And that's my issue with Mighty Ducks and how it
hasn't turned up like time after time. I know they're
youth hockey players, but just some of the stuff that
they're doing is like what am I even watching right now?
Speaker 2 (27:35):
And that can't skate? Either. No, hockey is a tricky one.
Speaker 6 (27:40):
It is a trick why there's not a lot of hockey.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
Yeah, that's why there's not a lot of hockey.
Speaker 6 (27:44):
And when you do them, it's not well known actors.
Like you said, with Miracle, like they did it right.
They went with hockey players who can act instead of
actors who can kind of play hockey exactly.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
And that's the way it shows and it's it is
probably my favorite. My favorite sports movie.
Speaker 6 (27:57):
Well, my favorite is super Chats. And we got one
more of.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Them, okay, one more than we got something speaking of
f one and cars.
Speaker 6 (28:05):
Yes, sir, nobody five hours super Chat, Joe Jay gets
buckets and Detroit loves getting buckets. CHP always enjoyed listening
to you in Grand Rapids. Also, is this the youngest
host you've ever worked with? I'm twenty three.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Probably. I've never asked people are ready questioned.
Speaker 6 (28:24):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
I don't ask people their ages. It doesn't matter to me.
I care what kind of people they are more than
anything else, and whether they're prepared. And you're prepared. So
I'm fine with that. So might be I Again, I'm
not even sure. Early on in my in my broadcasting career.
There might have been somebody who was equally as young
as I was twenty two to twenty three, but I
wasn't hosting the show, so I never gave that much thought.
(28:47):
I should probably think about that a little bit. So
you're mentioning F one, we're talking about cars a little bit.
I'm pulling into our parking lot here at Birmingham.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
Yeah, let me hear the story.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
And there's a car stopped in front of our entrance.
There's a parking spot that is prime. Oh man, right,
Usually we it's it's tough to find those parking stuff.
So there's a good looking car in front of me
that's parked, and you know that. You can see that
there's a couple of heads in there and nobody's moving,
and I'm like, okay, pause, pause, song's about to end.
(29:23):
Pause pause, Like okay, I'm behind somebody, so I'm not
afraid to go beep. You know, there's a difference between
laying on the horn and just giving a quick beep. Right,
laying on the horn, you're being kind of a jackass.
A quick beep is hey, I'm here right now, so
I just give it a quick beep. Passenger side door opens,
who comes out kool Aid? Kool Aid looks back, flips
(29:49):
me off.
Speaker 8 (29:55):
I was gonna tell you. In the car, we were like, oh,
let me go out there. So, whoever is it on?
Speaker 6 (30:01):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
It was. I don't want to say it was uncomfortable,
but it is one of those things like as he's
getting out, you're like, oh crap, that's a buddy of mine. Hey,
what's going on? Man? I just want to say he
low you try to play it off, Ricky, Hey, it's
good to see you. Man. Just wanted to say hi,
all the best.
Speaker 8 (30:21):
As soon as I turn around, I just saw his smile. Bro,
that's it.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
I was like, you know what.
Speaker 8 (30:25):
Shout out to Shep man because me personally.
Speaker 7 (30:27):
I saw the spot and instantly I was like, oh crap, brother,
like where is somebody's way?
Speaker 8 (30:32):
Then I saw it with Shep, I'm like, you know what,
I'm glad we saved that spot was on the way.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
You want, we want the real story inside the car
with the doors shut, the windows rolled up. Who's that
son of a bitch with the Maverick glasses? Come on, man,
tell him to tell him to chill out. Tell him
to chill out, be honest, be honest. Whoever was dropping
you off? What did they say? Be honest?
Speaker 8 (31:00):
It's okay.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
I've heard a lot worse. Trust me. Okay, Scottie Bowman
has called me names. Don't worry about it.
Speaker 8 (31:05):
She sent me out there to go handle it. And
I was like, man, I wonder who this is. I
was like, all right, babe, were all good, We're all good. No,
she was cool, man. She she was more nervous than anything.
She's a nervous bird behind the wheel. I like you straight.
I was like, that's just she just started crying, cracking up,
not crying.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
Shout outli. She is awesome and I am. The funny
thing about that is that has happened to me a
million times in the morning with kool aid, where I'll
be pulling in and He'll just be sitting there getting
dropped off and I'm trying to pull into the spot.
It happened so often.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Because these spots are valuable.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
They are valuable.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
You get one of those, you feel like you've won
the lottery.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Turned that corner. I hope.
Speaker 6 (31:46):
I'm like, please, please enough in the morning, I get
one every time.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
Yeah, I filled it in the other day in the
morning it was.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
There was always a lot of satisfaction to that it
was worth it up at four thirty in the morning
for this like this.
Speaker 6 (32:01):
This morning, I pulled up a little late. I pulled
up at nine instead of eight when I usually get here,
and I still got a spot. And I was like,
because I usually they're gone by nine, they're gone.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
So you're going, it's gonna be a good day today. Yes,

We back.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
So in the chat somebody sends us so no sports
real nice. Well, we did talk about the Detroit Ams,
talk about the city. This is a show in case
you were wondering, this is a show where friends get
together and talk sports, but talk about everyday life too.
So if this is not going to be if you want, well,
(36:00):
I can't even say Sports Center because they've got a
lot of clowns on Sports Center. But you're looking for
from twoh one to three point fifty nine to fifty
of sports every day, you're probably not going to get it. Okay,
because we talk about a lot of different things. Our
first show, we talked about going to Braylen's house and
he had us over for dinner and a camaraderie. That's
(36:23):
not what it's about. Now. If your time is precious
and you can't spend the time with us, then I
suggest you, you know, carve out a little bit of
a niche that we'll put it up on social media
because our social media group is the best there is
and you'll be able to find it. So I just
want you to know that. I mean, it's not going
to be wall to wall sports for two full hours.
(36:43):
We will do the majority. I would guess ninety percent
of our show will be sports, but I'm going to
take the time, especially after a weekend, to see how
my friends did over the weekend and enjoy some storytelling.
That's just the way this show is going to be.
If it's not and it's not for you, It's just
like sports.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
When you watch in the game, sometimes you DV eight
and talk about life or just like when you add
a game, you're not just gonna talk about sports the
whole time.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
Well talk about life.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Hell, the broadcasts aren't about the game that part a
lot of times, so don't give me that. But speaking
of broadcasts, last night, Tigers play on Sunday Night foot
which is great. Beat Texas to one. Matt Vierlin comes
through just as fifth RBI. Everybody wanted him going. I
understand why, but suddenly he comes through. So Terrek Scooble
(37:30):
was outstanding eleven strikeouts seventh time in his career already
he's had double digit strikeouts, that is a franchise record.
He's gonna win the Cy Young again. During the broadcast,
David Cohne, who's a really good dude. I met him
in New York, really good broadcaster as well, has really
good insight, said he's gonna be the highest paid pitcher
(37:53):
in baseball history. Not himself, he's already retired. It's Trek Scuoble.
Carl Ravi, who calls the games for ESPN, immediately said
are you talking about four hundred million dollars? And David
Cone didn't answer that, nor would I expect him to,
but he did say that Yoshi Yamamoto is the highest
paid at three hundred and twenty five mil. Right now,
he's highest paid complete package, not per year, per year.
(38:17):
At Zach Wheeler, he makes forty two mil. All right.
He signed a three year extension with one hundred and
twenty four million. You're not going to get that with
Trek Scuble. Immediately, when they said four hundred million, I
just cringed, and I cringed because that's the number forty
million a year that many Detroiters associate with. Tarek Scuoble
and Aiden Hutchinson, which to me are both highly irresponsible,
(38:43):
but that's probably what it takes. Like Justin you and
I were talking before the show about Max Schurzer, and
people were wondering, well, this franchise isn't going to pay
it and all this other stuff, and you know, I
think not that. I want to stick up for Chris Hillige.
He gets a little bit of a bad rap. Back then,
they were willing to give Max Scherz a twenty four
(39:04):
million year that was less than Justin Verlander. Verlander was
making closer to twenty six. They had a mono v
mono type battle between the two, which I think is healthy.
I got no problem with it, as long as you're
not throwing each other under the bus and so on
and so forth. He bet on himself, He did the
right thing. He did the right thing for himself. He'd
(39:24):
do the right thing for the Tigers. I suppose they
could have done something different. It's funny how the bar
is always rising. We always hear people talk about, well,
you know, look who reset the bar? Who's who reset
the bar in the NFL? Well was Jamar Chase or
and then who is it? Well, then it's Miles Garrett
or was it vice versa? And now it's going to
(39:45):
be t J. Watt And you know Aiden Hutchinson's going
to reset the bar Micah Parsons is going to reset
the bar. Well with the Tiger situation. Back in the
day Verlander and Schuzer, everybody got pissed that Schuzer wanted
to say I'm going to reset the He did reset it,
he just didn't reset it with somebody else, right, forty
(40:06):
million a year for Terrek's Scooble ten years he's thirty nine.
Tiger fans had all kinds of problems when the gel
kber being that old and making as much money. Why
do we think it's gonna be okay for Terrek'schooble.
Speaker 6 (40:22):
I don't think that people think it's okay. I think
that people believe in at least for my case, that
Terry Schouble's usage is going to be worth it over
that time span, not necessarily in those years, because you're
gonna get screwed on the back end. That's how all
these MLB contracts worth any No MLB player stays as
(40:43):
good as they are when they're twenty eight, when they're
thirty nine, it's just an unreasonable expectation to have for
these players. But what they can do is he can
be worth more than forty million for the next five
to seven years because he is the best pitcher in baseball,
And like you said, there's going to be probably six
more pitchers that reset the market during that time span.
(41:03):
So let's say, in six years, is Terry School being
the sixth highest paid pitcher in the MLB? Is that okay?
Speaker 2 (41:09):
I don't care where he ranks, I care how much
he makes. Rankings to me mean nothing. I want to
know how much he makes and is that worth it?
You're okay with somebody who participates in nineteen percent of
your games making forty million dollars, which is almost half
of what their payroll is, well, not quite half, but
(41:30):
about a third of what their payroll is.
Speaker 6 (41:32):
Now, Yeah, I mean you have to be. It's a
non salary cap.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
You don't have to be. You don't have to be.
You don't have to be fine with it at.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
All, and you'll never be. You'll never compete with the Yankees.
You'll never like they're just gonna pluck him away.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
You're not competing with dude, You're not compete with the Yankees. Now,
they're not compete with the Dodgers. You're not compete with
the Red Sox. You're not compete with the Mets. Okay,
you're not in the same Juan Sota wasn't looking at
you like, hey, I might go to Detroit.
Speaker 6 (41:54):
But Terry schoopl is he wants to commit. He if
he gets four hundred millillion dollars from the Tigers. I
mean I have complete certainty that he will commit.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
Now is complete certainty that he's.
Speaker 6 (42:07):
Not complete certain okay, but I would be betting. I
am a betting man. And if you were to give
me even odds, if his contract is four hundred million
dollars and the Tigers are willing to pay it, and
the Dodgers and the Yankees are in the same ballpark,
he will stay because because he loves the city and
he has gone on. I can only go off from
what he says.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
You realize there's a lot of players in sports over
the years who've said I love this city. Right, Okay,
So money talks, man, money talks.
Speaker 6 (42:36):
And if and if the ballpark is the same on
the contracts from the Dodgers and from the Yankees and
the Tigers are willing to pony up the same amount
of bread. I do believe terror Schoo will will be
a Detroit Tiger.
Speaker 8 (42:47):
Well, justin a lot of that.
Speaker 9 (42:48):
You know, when he said he loved the city and
he will love to stay here, A lot of that
may have been posturing by him and his agent, like
Scott Boris, you.
Speaker 6 (42:55):
Do have to take to take into account that that
is his agent.
Speaker 9 (42:59):
Like the sure, there's a right, right, and that relationship
with the Tigers ain't necessarily the best. But my question, yushv,
is why can't the Tigers be like those other teams
that you name.
Speaker 8 (43:10):
I'm not saying that's holding them back.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
I'm not saying they can't, Okay, And I know there's
no salary cap, but there there is a tax. Yeah, okay,
So for us, I'm not in the habit of spending
other people's money.
Speaker 8 (43:22):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
I think it's very easy for me to say, or
justin to say four hundred million dollars, go spend it
ten years, take them to thirty nine. It'll be bad
on the back end, but it'll be worth it on
the front end. How's it been for Philadelphia? They want
a World Series? Zach Wheeler? How has it been with
Garrett Cole? Have they won a World Series with Garrett Cole?
(43:47):
That's like I say, it's not the every day I
know this is taboo. I know this is not what
people believe. I think we have what happens in this
time probably more than any other. Maybe it happens in
a lot of times. We get someone who think is
the best and we just want to throw money out,
whether we think it's responsible or not, because we want
them to be here, and we think it's great that
he loves the city and all this other stuff. You
(44:09):
know what I want. I want the best team possible.
And if his payroll is not going to exceed a
whole lot more than what he is right now, or
even let's say one hundred and fifty million, spending that
much on one guy is not very responsible.
Speaker 9 (44:28):
But shit, what he is right now is a damn
near two times cy Young winner back to back. Like
entering I would say the prime, he's he hasn't even
scratched his prime yet, Like he's getting toward his prime.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
I think he's. Yeah, I think he's in his prime
for sure. Yeah, and he's probably got you know, four
or five more years of this stuff easy without without
a doubt, you don't think that's worth that. I don't think.
I don't think a picture is worth forty million dollars fair,
I don't. Every day player might be something different. I'd
take that forty million and I would spend it on
you know, a couple other really good pictures, is what
(45:00):
I would do.
Speaker 6 (45:01):
I think that because of how this Tiger's organization is
set up, with the players being young, a lot of
them already being locked up, and then obviously you're gonna
be dealing with the arbitration where you're going to be
able to get a lot of these guys for a
for very cheap deals, right, and you have the Max
Clark's coming up, you have the mcgonaicles coming up, which
are obviously.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
Yeah, I don't know, I don't know about I don't
count on guys at double A who took a while
to get through a ball and and not not all
these guys are locked up. You're talking about arbitration eligible.
One guy's locked up and that's Cole Keith. Yes, your
that's the good point though. The good point is you're
not spending the money on anybody else, so you're right
when You've got players like Parker Medows and Carrie Carpenter
(45:44):
and Spencer Torklesen and Cole Keith and Zach McKinstry. To
a certain extent, although he's thirty years old, Dylan Dingler.
They're not gonna count a lot of money against your
salary structure. You can afford to go get a guy
like Trek Scoubele, give him that money without crippling your budget.
(46:05):
That's the argument, Okay. The argument for me is not, hey,
he likes it here, he wants to be here, all
that other stuff. I've seen plenty of athletes who wanted
to be here in the town wanted him gone. So
I don't care about that. I care about production, but
I worry about long term. Ten years, four hundred million dollars.
You better flip and win. Okay, And we say that now,
(46:28):
not knowing what we're going to get in a couple
of years, doesn't take many guys carry Carpenter, hurt, Riley
Green hurt, turckles him with the down year, suddenly you
got I mean Steve Carlton in nineteen seventy two won
twenty five of his team's got fifty three to fifty
four games won the cy young one guy. You gotta
have more than that.
Speaker 7 (46:46):
Yeah, I'm sitting here looking at the chat right now,
and it's a lot of chatter on both sides. Now,
Cardier believes Chef is being sol but the Tigers version.
But then you got some other people who believe diffly
that ain't crazy clown. He says the Mickey contract dragged
this team down for years, and he also said the
Prince Fielder contract didn't deliver us anything. And so you
(47:10):
got people on both sides of it, some who believes
you got to get this man of money because of
the impact culturally, the impact on the field, his ability
to go out there and and and and run it
up one or two times, two times in a playoff series,
as well as you.
Speaker 8 (47:24):
Know that he's going to preserve your bullpen.
Speaker 7 (47:27):
You know that he's going to go out there and
if you wanted to, you can extend those innings. And
I do believe that that matters because they have other
games where age hitch has to rely on things like pitching.
Speaker 8 (47:37):
Chaos he has And then I get it you're saying
you'd rather bring in a couple.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
I don't know if he preserves your bullpen. You're not
letting him go three one hundred and five pitches. Last
night they took him out with gosh, you got two
men out and two men out. Okay. I guess to
a certain extent, he's throwing deeper than a lot of
other pictures. I look at the I look at the
highest paid pitchers. Maybe this is the wrong way to
look at it, so I'm open to it. I look
at so Zach Wheeler makes forty two mil. Jacob de
(48:04):
Gram makes forty mil. Garret Cole makes thirty six mil.
Corbin stop me when you've got the the World Series champion,
will you please? Corbin Burns makes thirty one mill and
has him pitched? Okay. Tyler Glass now has got thirty mil.
Shoey Otani makes twenty eight mil.
Speaker 6 (48:24):
Is he a piccher of glass? Glass now technically won
it last year? Yeah, Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
Yeah, was hurt, bus hurt, but okay, technically yep. Carlos
Rodin makes twenty eight mil. Blake Snell makes twenty seven mil.
Speaker 6 (48:40):
He won one with the Dodgers, okay.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
Sonny Gray makes twenty five mil with the Cardinals. Jack
Flaherty one one with the Dodgers. Twenty five mil. Okay,
if I'm Trek School, I'm making ten mil. And Jack Flaherty,
you know who's got an ERA close to five and
it's four up, nine down whatever he is and has
(49:04):
a one point two whip and he's making more than
twice me. I'm pissed, right, But Scott Borrows is gonna
get his guy his I'm just I'm talking about it
from a responsible standpoint, yes, of where this team's going.
If you said to me today forty million for Terrok
School over the next five years like that, the ten
(49:25):
year thing scares the hell.
Speaker 6 (49:26):
Out of me, and I think it should. But I
want to ask you a question about the ten years.
Do you really think the Tigers can have ten years
of sustained success where even in the back end, wouldn't
it most likely they be bottoming out anyway?
Speaker 2 (49:43):
Says who? Why would they bottom out after ten years?
Why is it eight years?
Speaker 6 (49:47):
It's hard to It's hard to sustain successful for a
ten year period where.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
You are tamp has been able to do it.
Speaker 6 (49:54):
Cleveland's been really smarter people in there.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
You Tampa, you hire are guys who are supposed to
be really smart. We're giving these guys all this credit.
What happens is we think there's a window. Let's be honest,
here to your window.
Speaker 6 (50:07):
And I don't.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
I don't believe windows. I don't believe in them. Okay,
because I think the time and time again has been
proven incorrect. We feel like, oh, we've got to win
right now, and if we don't win right now, we're
gonna miss our opportunity. If you've got a really good
front office Saint Louis, Tampa, I'm talking about the past, Okay,
even to a certain extent the current. We think. We
(50:29):
think New York wins based on money. When Brian Cashman's
a good general manager, it helps to have the budget, right,
I get all that. But in Saint Louis has had
a big budget. There's he's supposed to be. Scott Harris's
brought here to be the smart guy. Just be We're
gonna give credit to all these other front offices and say, well,
they've got really good front offices. That's why they're in
Tampa and Cleveland. Why can't Detroit be that.
Speaker 6 (50:52):
I there's no reason why they can't be. I just
don't think we've seen the sustained success to stamp the
stamp of approval that the Tampas have, the Cardinals have,
who have sustained the success for ten years. We've only
seen two years of success, a year and a half
of success, honestly, where the sample size just isn't big
enough for me to stamp, Like, all right, every move
(51:13):
that Scott Harris is going to make is going to work,
and I have an unwaivered amount of confidence in him
like I do with Brad Holmes. Brad Holmes has built
that Scott Harris is getting there. But I can't stamp
that right now.
Speaker 2 (51:24):
You get it. Although brought up you're the one who
brought up mcgonagal and Max Clark. You didn't say Bryce R. Rayner.
But those are the guys you're thinking of. Yes, they're
attached to this guy who you are willing to say
that's the future. They're gonna be fine. And yet on
the other hand, you're gonna say it's a ten year window.
That's gotta be one of the other ship.
Speaker 9 (51:43):
At the same time, you have to be able to
take risks because the moneyball strategy really just has.
Speaker 8 (51:48):
Not worked historically.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
It's not a moneyball.
Speaker 9 (51:51):
You don't think it's this is a moneyball type strategy
like your approach.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
Nope, I don't. I don't think they're signing Dave Justice,
you know, at the end of his career.
Speaker 6 (52:00):
I don't think they're trying to move guys to a
movie either.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
Not.
Speaker 8 (52:03):
So what do you say to the people in the chat?
Like Blake?
Speaker 7 (52:07):
I don't know if you've seen it, but he's turned
into your nemesis in the chat. Now he is just
going to go on to going and he says this
in all caps. So I got to do with some
justice paying a man or someone else will. He's wondering,
if there is no cap, why should we worry. Now,
you've been around sports for some time. You've see how
his work, especially with the Tigers. He's wondering, if there
(52:27):
is no cap, why does it matter?
Speaker 2 (52:30):
Well, again, there is a you have you get taxed
on it at the end. Ask the Dodgers about attacks,
ask the Red Sox about attacks. So let's not get
too caught up and well, there is no cap. I'm
talking about responsible spending here, Blake. It's not that I
don't like trek school. It's not that I don't believe
in trek school. It's not that I don't think he's
the best pitcher in baseball. I worry the hell out
(52:52):
of giving somebody a ten year deal at the age
of twenty nine.
Speaker 6 (52:56):
You literally just said you would give him a five
year deal at the same price point.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (53:00):
Would you give him which is extremely realistic? Unrealistic because
he's gonna sign for eight or ten years.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
He's gonna yeah, he's good. I mean, that's what Garrett
Cole did. I mean, that's he's going to get the
four hundred million.
Speaker 6 (53:12):
Would you give him four hundred million over six years
to make sure that you can ensure every ounce of
good baseball out of him?
Speaker 2 (53:23):
That that is? That is really steep. I would have
to give that a long thought. Probably not from a
financial standpoint, I probably would not.
Speaker 6 (53:33):
It definitely seems irresponsible.
Speaker 7 (53:35):
I mean, what do you guys think of Randalls. Small's
in a chat. We know that he's one of the
biggest Tigers fans out there. He says he believes Cooble
doesn't want to stay in Detroit. He believes that the
Tigers took the chance to draft him while hurt Dodgers
and Yankees can spend the six hundred million Tigers max
probably six.
Speaker 8 (53:54):
Hundred five hundred. He said six.
Speaker 2 (54:00):
Six hundred million dollars.
Speaker 8 (54:03):
Dollars. It's just it's not a million dollars.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
It's not Juan Soto, it's not shohe O Tani. But
it's it's more than Let me ask you a quick question.
Vladimir Guerrero Junior. You think he's a good player, He's
a really good player. I think he's a really good player.
Speaker 8 (54:18):
You're gonna give.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
Terreik School more than Vladimir Gerro Junior. That's what you're talking,
you are, That's that's what you're suggested. Put it that way,
that's what Okay, Yeah, you're he's gonna make more per
year than you're in Judge. So you said there's a
you're not sold yet on the you know on Scott Harris,
it's only a year and a half. You're sold on
Trek School for a year and a half, but you're
not sold on the front office. In a year and
(54:40):
a half, Aaron Judge makes forty million dollars, Terrek School
is gonna make more than that in all likelihood. I'm
not asking you which one's deserving or not. I just
I'm playing I'm the everyday guy. Yeah, I'm probably that's
that's the going great pictures. That's tough for me to swall.
Speaker 7 (55:00):
Now, night Owl in a chat, night Owl in nineteen
seventy eight, and thank you chat family for you guys
getting those comments in Blake.
Speaker 8 (55:06):
He just continues to hammer the chat.
Speaker 7 (55:08):
But he's saying, letting homegrown generation some talent just leave
doesn't seem like a good strategy to me.
Speaker 8 (55:13):
But you're not saying just let him leave.
Speaker 7 (55:15):
You have a price point you assigned for it, and
you also believe you gotta get something right.
Speaker 2 (55:20):
Absolutely not. I hope that didn't come across that way.
I don't care if they're homegrown. Yes, I know it's
I know it's a big deal. Okay, when you celebrated
in two thousand and four, how many Pistons were homegrown?
Speaker 1 (55:38):
Yeah, fact be.
Speaker 2 (55:41):
With Chelsea Phillips home grown, Richard Hamilton homegrown, stupid homegrown,
Tayshawn Prince and that's it pretty much right, Carlos Williamson
won homegrown. I mean, come on, let's stop that. Jared
Golf wins you a Super Bowl this year, are you
gonna go damn it? We didn't draft him. I don't
like it.
Speaker 8 (55:58):
Hey, stop it this out. Lindsay was homegrown.
Speaker 7 (56:04):
Even the year they want to take somebody, they still
were like, hey see. And then when they cut Lindsay, yeah,
they went on hand and brought them back. But you're right,
and we drafted Lindsay Hunter.
Speaker 1 (56:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
I think a lot of it is, you know, we
have personal pride with certain things you want to draft
and develop. I'm with you on that. I love like
Riley Green, love them. Okay, really I want all the
homegrown guys to be successful period. But we're all we
all harken back to like nineteen eighty four, Okay, Gibson, Trammel, Whittaker, Morris,
(56:34):
Petrie Parish. That's awesome, right, Yeah, guess what. Larry Herndon
was important, not homegrown. Chet Lemon was important, not homegrown.
Dave Bergman was important, not homegrown. There were a ton
of guys, darryl Levan's not homegrown, all right. Those guys
were instrumental too. I don't have to be not all
these guys had to play together at Eerie and and
(56:55):
Toledo for me to love them and feel like they
got to be part of it.
Speaker 6 (57:00):
And if you feel that way about Glabor Torres, you're insane.
Speaker 2 (57:03):
Yeah right, He's been a really good player for this team.
He's at eight hundred OPS. This team's top artic the
best here of his career. Yeah, pretty close to it.
You know, he's at higher ops. It depends on what
state you look at. But he's been outstanding for this team.
And I was wrong about glabor Tours. I didn't want him,
but he's been really, really good. Do I hold it
(57:23):
against him that he's not the second baseman because he
paid his dues through Eerie or West Michigan.
Speaker 8 (57:30):
Hell no, Hey, hey, set.
Speaker 7 (57:32):
They start off the cell like, oh, he's just not
talking sports. Then you talk sports and you got.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
Him mad Let's go.
Speaker 6 (57:39):
I do believe, though, to win a World Series you
need the caliber of starting pitcher that Terror school is.
I think you have seen starting pitchers be the catalyst
on World Series teams plenty of times in the past.
The one that I referenced the most is the Madison
Bumgarner years and the way that he was able to
pitch in every facet multiple games coming out of the bullpen,
(58:01):
and he really secured that win for the Giants. And
I see Terry Scouble as something extremely similar. And when
you put that guy in that type of environment, the
competitor that he is, I truly believe he's going to
do that type of thing. And I think that is
what you're paying for. And that's what the Yankees and Dodgers,
if they are willing to go above the pay that
(58:21):
Tigers will that they will be getting.
Speaker 2 (58:23):
Unfortunately, Yeah, they're all competitors, so that's a given. With
Terrek Scooble, that's a given. And yes, those teams are
going to be in the market for his services. They'd
be stupid not to be unless Detroit locks him up
prior to.
Speaker 6 (58:39):
Which will not happen, which it is too late.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
Now, well, no, you could do it in the offseason.
He's got another year arbitration eligibility. Yeah.
Speaker 9 (58:46):
Yeah, but at this point, why wouldn't I want to
go to market now I'm gonna get the best price.
Speaker 6 (58:51):
Don't I don't believe Schooble wouldn't test the market just
to raise his price point.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
But you but you said earlier that you think he
wants to be here, Then why would he test the
market if he wants to be here? Because that's just
good business exactly, And is it not good business?
Speaker 6 (59:07):
You can want to be here like Sures wanted to
be here. But they weren't willing to pay the bread.
It's just how it is.
Speaker 2 (59:12):
Yeah, well they were, Yeah, they were willing to pay
not enough, not enough, not enough bread.
Speaker 8 (59:16):
Yeah, chev Now I'm interested. What do you think is
a fair deal.
Speaker 2 (59:19):
For Schoogl for Schoobl, Yeah, that's a really good question.
So personally that he would never go for it, but
I would do. I would do a six year deal
two hundred and fifty million dollars. Okay, Okay, that's over
forty million year. You're still getting him in his prime.
That's a selfish deal on my part. He is the organization,
(59:39):
fair team. I can feel free to do that me
as an organization. That is a selfish move. That is
me looking out for me, not looking out for him.
All Right, I can't do I don't How many pictures
do I want at age thirty eight and thirty nine?
That's all? That's a lot. Look, guys are throwing a
(01:00:02):
lot of pitches these days, is okay, And I know
they're not going as deep as as you want him to.
I just I'm all for drafting and development, folks. I'm
just you gotta be careful with it because when they
went to the World Series in two thousand and six,
Pad Rodriguez was he homegrown? No, okay, was Placido Polanco was?
(01:00:25):
Carlos Gilla? Was Craig Monroe. The answer to that is no.
Was magli Ordonez was Marcus Timms. It's it gets a
little much for me when we hold on to certain things.
Bonderman was Nobody liked him. Verlander was, People loved him.
(01:00:46):
Nate Robertson was, Actually he wasn't. He wasn't homegrown either.
Zach Minor he wasn't. People didn't like him. Kenny Rodgers
was the best pitcher of that year. He won homegrown.
So I can I can make way with guys who
are not coming up through the system. I would prefer
to have their prime years and get them, you know,
(01:01:09):
from Double A to Triple A to the big leagues.
But if I got to say goodbye to him, I
got to say goodbye to him because I got to
do what's right for the organization long term. Yes, he
is signing a guy at age twenty nine, thirty. He'll
be thirty next year, won't he? Is he be thirty
next year?
Speaker 6 (01:01:25):
Guys twenty nine I think twenty nine. Believe he's twenty
eight right now.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
Okay, if he's twenty eight, he'll be twenty nine next year.
You sign him to that ten year contract, and I'm
assuming that maybe that's an nfaor assumption. I'm assuming it's
going to be a ten year deal.
Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
Minimums eight.
Speaker 8 (01:01:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:01:40):
I meels like, yeah, if you're the agent, that's what
you're asking for, right, without question? Quick time out.
Speaker 6 (01:01:46):
Doctor Pierce Graham is thirty seven?
Speaker 2 (01:01:49):
What's that?
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
De gram is thirty seven and still pitching at an
elite level. And I think it is important to bring
up because I do think the sustainabilities is important for
pictures these days. But he also did have a major
arm injury.
Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
Yeah, I just gonna says he's pitching elite level this year, Yes,
the previous two years. Texas is kicking themselves in their
own slabs, going why the hell do we sign this guy?

Second hour of the program. Brailan Edwards will be back tomorrow.
The Brailean Edwards Show Monday through Friday two till four
here on Woodward Sports.
Speaker 6 (01:06:36):
And uh, I can put this magazine above my face.
So you think I'm Brailan Edwards.
Speaker 2 (01:06:39):
It's gonna take a lot more than that. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (01:06:44):
You got standing chair too, right, Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:06:49):
I go up to about Brailan's abs.
Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
He's so tall.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
Yeah, I think his arms are thicker than all of
our thighs, thicker than my head. But it was it
was great to see brailin yesterday. Uh, it's funny. I
saw a couple of guys in at the game at
the Amps game and they're they're looking at me, and
then they're looking down and they're looking at me and
then they're looking down and I'm thinking, either a they
(01:07:13):
have gas or they want to ask me a question.
So I went up to him and they said, hey, man,
aren't you working with Braylen And they show the picture
they went out on Woodward Sports on the show and
I said, I think you got the answer right there. Yeah,
I am. I'm excited you know, and they said, uh, yeah,
where's brailing At. I said, I'm sorry, I don't know.
(01:07:33):
I mean the smart assid you want to say, it's
not my turn to watch him. But I said, I
don't know. And I said, but I know he's coming.
I know he's coming to the game. So they said,
i'll tell you what, I'll call him. I said, yeah,
it's it's pretty loud. I don't know if you're going
to be able to hear it. The one guy says, well,
I'm good friends with his dad. I said, yeah, I
love Stan. I don't know if he's going to be
able to hear it. So the guy does it. He
calls and you know, at those games, it's it's super loud.
(01:07:58):
The music. I a headache, okay by the end of
that thing. I mean, the guy screaming on the microphone
telling them me to stand up and cheer and all
that other stuff. And he's got stand on speaker on
his phone. I'm trying to talk to him, and I'm
saying to the guy, it's it's okay, don't don't worry
about it. We'll find Brailen. It's gonna be all right.
(01:08:19):
He stan, it's so and so where's brailing at? I
can't hear Stan.
Speaker 1 (01:08:25):
There's no way the men somewhere, his grown son is at.
Speaker 2 (01:08:31):
I have no idea. I don't know what the hell
is going on, but yeah, it was pretty funny. It
was pretty funny. I did DVR the the remainder of
the Open Championship with Scottie Scheffler. How good he was?
He's He's simply amazing. I think the most amazing. So
(01:08:52):
there's two statistics and then we'll get into football.
Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:08:55):
The fact that Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods, and I
think it's an unfair comparison. It's ridiculous to compare Scottis
ship to Tiger Woods right now that they're they won.
The difference between their first and their fourth major was one.
Speaker 1 (01:09:09):
Ninety seven, same as that time. That's eerie.
Speaker 2 (01:09:12):
But here's the other eerie part. Their first major for
both was the Masters. Oh yeah, their fourth major for both.
Speaker 5 (01:09:21):
Then I know Scotty's got that's his third. Oh no,
you're right, he has four good, He's right, you're right,
he needs the other the fourth leg.
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
I mean you're talking about you're talking about names, and
you're talking about uh some of some of the all
time greats. I think we rush people too quickly to
try and compare them and make them the next great.
I mean, I think of Harold Minor. Oh baby Jordan,
what did anybody watch him at Florida State. He's not
He's not that good, right, He's not. He's not Michael Jordan.
(01:09:50):
We want to find the next Jordan. We want to
find the next Joe Montana. Now, Tom Brady.
Speaker 6 (01:09:54):
I think Cooper Flags a great example.
Speaker 2 (01:09:57):
Yeah, yeah, we want to find the next great instead
of just letting these guys kind of develop under their
own skin, if you will. So I thought it was
a really good theater what Scotti Scheffler was able to do.
And I think he's a really humble champion and I
like him a lot. I think he's got a lot
of things in perspective. The perspective of David Montgomery and
(01:10:17):
the Lions is an interesting one and I love it.
Like he's telling people, it's almost as if people have
forgotten David Montgomery's part of the offense. Literally, when I
say Lions offense, who's the first name that comes to mind?
Speaker 7 (01:10:31):
Jared Goff, Jared goffm and Ra Pennay Okay, and.
Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
Jared golf Amara.
Speaker 8 (01:10:39):
Gibbs.
Speaker 2 (01:10:39):
Okay, how much is that as the quarterback or how
or do you if it's just the biggest name, because
I think Penny Seul right away, because I think he's
the best player on the team. But I think Penny.
You guys think GoF. I get there's no wrong answer here.
I'm just wondering.
Speaker 6 (01:10:57):
I don't think GoF. I just think the fan base
thing you think. I think it's Penny Sewell or Jamier Gibbs.
Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Okay, I agree with that.
Speaker 8 (01:11:05):
Tonight was my thinking, that's my favorite nobody. Oh offense,
Yeah you would think GoF.
Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
Yeah, you would think because of the quarterback position. Okay,
fair enough. Not many people are thinking David Montgomery anymore.
I was thinking Davi Montgomery a couple of years ago.
I love him, man, he runs like a mother. I
just I love everything about him. Okay, he did once
he went hurt, he did get a little overshadowed, and
rightfully so. Jamiir Gibbs, I think it's a top three
(01:11:34):
running back in the national foot But he's come out
and David Montgomery said, I'm tired of being close. This
is the year of reckoning in Brad Holmes, I trust
I think it's a year of reckoning for Brad Holmes.
And I'll tell you why. With the injuries, to injuries
(01:11:54):
to McNeil and you know, Davenport, Barnes, all all these
guys who not that they're hurt, but they have had
some rough time staying healthy. Instead of him going out
and addressing with maybe a little bit more familiar name,
doesn't have to be a superstar. I wasn't expecting him
to trade for Trey Hendrickson or Max Crosby or something
(01:12:16):
like that. But instead of him addressing it in that regard,
he has kind of pushed his chips into the middle
of the table with the guys he feel almost obligated to.
I think it's a year of reckoning for Brad Holmes.
What's your guys take on it?
Speaker 7 (01:12:33):
Look, when we were talking about this before the show
a little bit and just where everybody's thoughts were, I'm
telling you, man, that was what stood out most importantly
to me, that this is a year of wreckoning for
Brad Holmes.
Speaker 8 (01:12:44):
For years, we've talked about what we want the Detroit
Lions to do.
Speaker 7 (01:12:48):
We've talked about the edge problem, we've talked about other
issues on this squad, We've talked about addressing certain position groups,
and Brad Holmes just continued to honestly march to the
beat of his own drunk with success, with improvements.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
Every year he's been he's been awesome. But but by
the way, when I say reckoning, I don't mean like,
if you don't get it done, you're fired.
Speaker 8 (01:13:05):
Hell No, Okay, yeah, it will sound a little extra.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
I should have defined that first. I just think when
when I see that word, when I see David Montgomery
saying it's the year of reckoning, right, I think it's
a really important year for Brad Holmes, for for him
to keep the trust of not that you do it
for the fan base, but to keep the trust of
people because of his decisions to go with guys who
(01:13:32):
have had speckled pasts from a health standpoint, I think.
Speaker 6 (01:13:37):
That's fair to say. You see him do it with
the Marcus Davenports the world. You even see it with
his draft strategy. He grabs JMO and JAMO has worked
out to his credit. But I think that maybe it's
a year that if we don't get it done, he
has to completely change how he goes about doing his
business going for guys. That sustainability that can be sustainable
because availability is a skill and availability is needed to
(01:14:00):
win a Super Bowl. You saw it last year with
the Philadelphia Eagles in twenty one of twenty two Day
one starters starting in the Super Bowl. That's a big deal.
And I think that that's only done with how you
build this team. So yes, I think that if we
go through another injury riddled year, I mean you're already
seeing it. Rag Straw went out of practice yesterday. Azeloni
has how and he's had some injuries, yeah, right, yep, Azeloney.
(01:14:22):
As as his injury that he's dealing with, Decker's dealing
with an injury. Like the injuries are already starting to
pile up, and they might be minor and they might
only be things that are keeping him out of camp
for a little while. But even then, how like, when
we're going through the ebbs and flows of a season,
how many little injuries can we sustain? Can we have
guys playing through because it does dip their production when
they are playing her And that's something that I think
(01:14:44):
is something that we have to take a look at
and think, does Brad Holmes have that eye for guys
who are going to stay healthy or is he just
drafting guys hoping that they're staying up yet.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
I don't think there's a football player on the planet
who goes a full year without getting hurt. No, I
mean that is constant, and as you get older, it's
going to be more challenging to overcome the injuries you
suffered the year before. See Frank rag Now. So I
don't I get all that. I think coaches and I
(01:15:16):
think Dan Campbell does a really good job of this
of making sure in order from my guy to be
available for me on Sunday, he's going to miss some
practice time this week. That's okay, right, But I think
when it comes to Brad Holmes and I trust him implicitly.
So don't take this out of context. I mean, you
bring up Jamison Williams. Let's use Jamiir Gibbs. You love
(01:15:39):
Jamiir Gibbs, but you didn't want him opening day, you
didn't or you didn't want him on draft night, nobody did.
Everybody wanted something else addressed, so he had and I
didn't either. Just so we're clear, I'm not pointed just
to you. I didn't like to pick I don't think
anybody said that's it awesome way to go. I don't
know what person who said that. Okay, I will say this,
(01:16:03):
he has proven with his scouts that they know what
the hell they're doing, so I'm more apt to give him,
you know, that leeway when it comes to these players.
But I was surprised that he went with a guy
like Davenport, a guy like Derek Barnes. Yeah, and some
(01:16:24):
guys who have had that history. I hate to call
players injury pron it's not fair, but have had that
history of injuries when you could have taken you know,
maybe save that money and give it to Zadaria Smith
or get closer with Zadarias Smith because he has been
proven to be a little bit healthier in his career.
Speaker 7 (01:16:42):
And that's why I was getting at earlier, is that
effectively Brad Holmes has put himself in a position or
what we do just say, trust him Brad, even if
it goes against what we generally or technically would want
to see the team do, because he's had that success,
which is why I do believe it is pivotal to
say this is a year of reckoning for Brad Holmes.
It has to work out because he's putting more eggs
in the basket of the way he does things and
(01:17:04):
less in the way we think. And some of that
recipe has centered around players that you can probably get
at a discount, but we know that when you look
at their past in terms of availability, it's questionable. He's
not signing players that we think are bad, but are
they going to be there when it matters most? And
that's where we saw them get snake bit last year
to the tune of going into the playoffs and then
(01:17:25):
losing more players that day. Once your death is already riddled,
you want to know that at least the players you're
hoping to depend on that you don't think have.
Speaker 8 (01:17:33):
That injury history.
Speaker 7 (01:17:34):
What if they do get injury, but then everybody else
you brought in is already sitting on the bench because
you're trying to take these risks. It's worked till now,
so we all say trust in Brad, but this is
going to be a big litmus.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
Test for it. Just because you question a manager, a coach,
a general manager, a team president doesn't mean that you
don't trust them, and doesn't mean that you don't I
can have a disagreement with him like I trust aj
Hinch implicitly anybody else? Of course, right, he's gonna be
the manager of the year, and rightfully so. He's one
of the best technicians in all of baseball. It's clear, okay,
(01:18:09):
not just because you're watching it, and but how many
people were pissed off about him pulling Terrek schoobl last
night with two outside Yeah in the eight I didn't
get it. Yeah, understood, right, So a lot of people
didn't get it. I understand that. My immediate thought is
I turned fandom for a moment and think who's better
than him? Who's better than him coming in in this situation,
(01:18:32):
you're going to bring in another lefty and Tyler Holton, right,
and don't give me this. Well, he throws stuff in
the dirt. Trek Scooble threw a couple in the dirt,
two that were blacked by Dylan Dingler. You can blame
it on Dylan Dingla that he should have blocked it.
That's up to you. That's fine. But the point is
that you pulled the guy after one hundred and five
pitches and a guy who it's just he's the best
option you have if this, If that were a World
(01:18:53):
Series game, and I know it's not you're leaving him
in there. Okay, So it's okay to question a guy
like aj Hinch even though you believe in him. It's
okay to question Brad Holmes a little bit in this guy.
Speaker 6 (01:19:06):
I agree with you. I think that when you look
at these Super Bowl teams that have won it in
the recent history of the NFL, they have two very
good ed rushers. We're talking in the upper twenty five percent.
Both of the ad dressers in most years are there.
(01:19:27):
The one I think of the most, the most dominant
defense that has won the Super Bowl in the last
ten years is the Denver Broncos when they had Von
Miller and DeMarcus Ware. I'm not saying that we need that, yeah,
but I'm saying we need a lead enough group where
they are constantly pressuring the quarterback because that is the
only way you beat the Mahomes of the world, the
(01:19:48):
allen of the world, and the Jacksons of the world.
The only way you do so is by putting them
in pressure situations where they are running for their life.
They have to make off platform throws, they have to
make throws with guys in their face. And that is
where you can beat those quarterbacks. Going into a shootout
with those guys is honestly a death sentence. And that's
why you saw the Eagles win last years because they
(01:20:10):
were able to consistently put pressure on Mahomes and make
him uncomfortable.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
Yeah, a lot of that. I like to pressure up
up in the middle. I mean, I think you cause
more problems for quarterbacks with pressure in their face. So
I don't think I'm in the minority here. I don't
think you need two elite pass rushers. I don't know
many teams in the National Football League right now that
have two elite pass rushers. But you have to have
(01:20:36):
two healthy, productive pass rushers. Okay, that's what I want.
If Aiden Hutchinson, you expect me to get seventeen and
a half like Trey Hendrickson a year ago. Probably not.
If he got your fourteen sacks and opposite him got
your seven and a half, I think you'd feelate that
all day. Sure you would, right, But I wouldn't say
(01:20:58):
the seven and a half guy is elite. No, So
I'm not trying to mince words here. I'm just saying,
you get those two, then you're gonna have some guys
who spell them once in a while, get one or two,
sprinkle some love, and you get the guys in the
middle who are pressuring. They're gonna help you. They're actually
gonna funnel some of those to the guys off the edge,
and maybe some linebackers on a blitz or whatever the
(01:21:19):
case may be. Right, So, I don't know, it's a
good question. How many teams in the National Football League
right now have elite pass rushers?
Speaker 1 (01:21:26):
Not a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:21:27):
I would say the Steelers with high Smith and TJ.
Speaker 2 (01:21:31):
Watt.
Speaker 6 (01:21:31):
Okay, I would say both.
Speaker 2 (01:21:32):
Of them are e leat, Yeah, all right, you know
we love TJ. Watt. I think that's a really good answer.
I don't know if high Smith's elite, but he's pretty
damn good.
Speaker 6 (01:21:40):
Okay, Elite is probably not the right word. I think
that you're qualifying factors of seven and a half sacks
or above is where you need to be for a
Super Bowl contender. You need to be able to put
concert pressure on the quarterback. And I think in a
dream scenario, is they're putting up nine and a half,
which I believe high Smith put.
Speaker 8 (01:22:00):
Up last year.
Speaker 2 (01:22:01):
That's pretty damn good.
Speaker 6 (01:22:02):
Yeah, nine and a half and then fourteen plus is
an elite edge combo. We'll put it as a combo
elite edge combo.
Speaker 2 (01:22:10):
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
Speaker 6 (01:22:11):
I don't know how. I don't think there's a lot
of other ones around the league. I certainly can't think
of it off the top of my head. But I mean,
forty nine ers, they make do with Nick Bosa and
then their opposite usually puts up around seven and a
half sacks and that keeps them competitive.
Speaker 2 (01:22:27):
Yeah, and that's what I think we should be looking for.
Speaker 6 (01:22:29):
I think Kadarius Smith is the perfect person to put there.
I think that you can pencil in next year that
he will be able to get seven and a half
sacks and you are looking at a super Bowl caliber
edge combo.
Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
Absolutely, I assume he's keeping himself still in really good shape.
I think he was really really productive in Cleveland because
he was helped out by Miles Garrett, no doubt, YEP.
I would guess that Miles Garrett probably was helped out
by him a little bit. And I think Aiden Hutchinson
would be helped out by him too, But he's not
(01:23:01):
on this roster.
Speaker 1 (01:23:03):
Do you know, why?
Speaker 2 (01:23:04):
Do you know? Do you wonder I wonder why I
do wonder why. Yeah. My guess is, look, I'll call
myself out here. If he's that valuable and I would
want him. But if he's that valuable, how come no
one else has picked him up? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:23:20):
And that's the second part of my question, is like
he's still just sitting at home with his girl.
Speaker 9 (01:23:24):
He's a he's an older pass rusher, though, I think
that does play a factor into it, but shep. I
wanted to ask you, like, how much credence do you
give into Brad cares about his own guys too much?
Because I said earlier in the day that you know,
I feel like Zadarias Smith would still be on this
team if Cleveland hadn't to put so many void years
on his contract.
Speaker 8 (01:23:43):
They ended up.
Speaker 9 (01:23:44):
Saving about a good six to seven million. And then
you look up and Kirby Joseph's getting paid so and
when you look at his Brad home strategy, he loves
to pay his own guys. It's not like he hasn't
shelled out money. It's just been for draft picks that
he brought in that have been highly productive for the team.
Speaker 2 (01:23:59):
How much credence do you Yeah, I think that's valid
for sure. I don't think he pays him just because
they're his guys. I think he pays Kirby Joseph because
he's one of the best safeties in football.
Speaker 8 (01:24:07):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
I think he's gonna pay Brian Branch because he's one
of the best safeties in football.
Speaker 9 (01:24:11):
But you need money to do that. You know, you
got to you got to make cuts somewhere. That's perhaps
that's like Angeloni does Zadarius Smith situation. There are certain
things here that you you know eventually you're going to
have to start cutting corners somewhere.
Speaker 1 (01:24:27):
Yay.
Speaker 2 (01:24:28):
Not everybody can get paid the max, yeah, or in
the top five of their position. And perhaps that's the
reason Brad Holmes hasn't signed Zadarius Smith yet is because
he's worried about some of the other guys that he
either has to pay or is going to pay on
his roster right now. If he wants to take care
of his guys, I don't care as long as those
(01:24:51):
guys are productive. If he's taking care of Kirby Joseph
and Brian Branch, and he's taking care of Jack Campbell
and Aiden Hutchinson and Jamiir Gibbs, and I'm on Ross
Saint Brown and Penny Sewell, I'm I'm fine with that.
Who else do you want instead of those guys so
all young? By the way, they're absolutely young. Men are
(01:25:11):
still young, productive, know the system, good in the locker room,
Dan Campbell type of guys. Give me the negative of
signing any of those guys long term. I haven't even
mentioned Sam Laporta. Yeah, you know he's signing a Lee McNeil.
I was happy about that. I don't think either. Yeah,
I don't think he's signing guys because those are my
guys and I'm covering my ass. Hell no, he's signing
(01:25:34):
those guys because they're really good players. They're really productive players,
those are winning players. Those are the guys I want.
Speaker 6 (01:25:42):
I completely agree. Yeah, paying a guy who's going to
force you ten turnovers like Kirby Joseph is so valuable
in a league what's dominated by offense, and defenses rarely
get to get them on punts. So I think getting
interceptions and forcing turnovers is pivotal for defenses. A guy
like Kirby Joseph who can constantly contribute.
Speaker 2 (01:26:03):
That, and even if he's not giving me that many
because I can't expect that, conch. If he gives me
what Hunter Smith provides the Vikings, what Kyle Hamilton provides
the Ravens, I'm all for it, man. I need some interceptions,
you know, I go ten, that's okay. Are you knocking
guys across the middle? Are you covering different people? Are
(01:26:25):
you understanding schemes? Are you getting home on a blitz?
All those other things? Amen?
Speaker 8 (01:26:30):
And you know what else? Then he's gonna make people
think twice.
Speaker 7 (01:26:33):
So even if the interceptions aren't there, if the red
zonceptions aren't there, do you think people want to test them?
Aaron Rodgers tried that several years back, and the league
tried it again. They ran it right back as if
Kirby Joseph wasn't what he put on film, and what
did he do? He went out there again and was
a red zone ball hall. Now I do wonder what
does this do for a quarterback when they get into
(01:26:54):
that red zone and they have to think Kirby Joseph
is over there.
Speaker 8 (01:26:57):
We've tested it.
Speaker 2 (01:26:57):
They have to come from. Yeah, they have to come from.
My experience with quarterbacks is they don't care my experiences.
I look, I'm really good too, and I'm gonna beat you,
and I'm gonna trust my guy. I'm gonna trust Justin Jefferson.
I'm gonna test trust TJ. Hockinson. Who's ever matched up
with you can get burned, and it's happened obviously. But
(01:27:19):
most of those guys, with their mentality, I don't think
they're walking up. I could be wrong here, but in
quarterbacks I've talked to and players I've told you, they
go up to lives screams, they don't give a crap.
They're gonna count for him. Oh my god, there's Troy Palomelo,
there's Ed Reed. Absolutely, But does that mean sorry, I
can't throw there? Hell no, because guess what then you
start counting out the guys that you got on your team. Oh.
(01:27:42):
DJ Read's pretty good, right, Brian Branch is pretty good?
Speaker 11 (01:27:45):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
Oh yeah, so is Kirby Joseph. Does that mean all
I can do is throw a Terry on Arnold? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (01:27:51):
No, No, I hope that's how to come in thinking,
because Karby Joseph has shown if you do not respect
the fact that he will take the ball away in
a red zone, he will take it away in the
red zone. That's why we've seen him get better year
after year. Think about all the reds.
Speaker 8 (01:28:05):
On interceptions he had and if you just take away those,
get it. We don't play the f game. But that's
why he was lunching.
Speaker 7 (01:28:10):
So for me, the game if a team don't get
smart about mister Carby, I think that you're gonna see
him go out there on lunch again this year.
Speaker 2 (01:28:16):

Speaker 1 (01:32:47):
I didn't think I was gonna make it through that
one that.
Speaker 2 (01:32:51):
Make it through. I knew you would. I knew you would.
Talk a lot about the Lions and the narrative and
the constant conversation nationally. I don't think it's as much locally.
Maybe I'm wrong there. It's about the coordinators. It's always
I kind of laugh at it when people go, you
can't win with two new coordinators. Oh, Philadelphia didn't win
(01:33:12):
with two new coordinators last year? Hell yeah they did. Yeah, okay,
and won the Super Bowl win. I think you have
success and players gotta make plays. You know, we can
break down all that other stuff that people want. But
Dan Campbell had a really good answer to this the
other day when people were asking about it. He said,
first of all, it doesn't matter what I say. That's
(01:33:34):
already a narrative. So I'm not going to change that.
None of us will. It's a great point. It's going
to be constant. Man, it is going to be constant.
He says, will be good. He's looking to the offensive line.
Calvin Shepherd's the new DC. John Morton is the new OC.
He's that quote right there, will be good. He's talking
about the offensive line. But from the the coordinator's standpoint,
(01:33:59):
the constant discussion on this, it's going to be all
year long. Okay, it may not be from a local
standpoint all year long, but they they're gonna play a
lot of nationally televised games when if you're watching it,
and maybe you're gonna be at Ford Field, but if
you're watching it, that's what you're gonna hear. It's gonna
be constant about the coordinators.
Speaker 6 (01:34:19):
There's no doubt about that. And just wait until there
is any size miss queue by either of them. It
will be blown out of proportion like it's Hiroshima. Yeah,
and that is absolutely absurd. You gotta give them the chance.
Do you remember last year that people were questioning this
offense because Ben Johnson started the year struggling a little
(01:34:41):
bit where the offense wasn't clicking as much as they
were the year before.
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
I don't recall that that narrative. Maybe I just tuned
it out because.
Speaker 6 (01:34:52):
I'd love to know, first of all, especially after the
Tampa law.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
Yeah, yeah, I was gonna say, how quickly? How quickly
do you want to jump on it? Okay? I mean,
are you gonna tell me the first game? Every team
Cincinnati's offense was damn good. When all is said and done,
they didn't make the playoffs, Obviously their offense was really
damn good, wasn't it.
Speaker 6 (01:35:15):
Yeah, it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (01:35:15):
Do you remember their first game against New England? How
awful was that?
Speaker 6 (01:35:19):
They were?
Speaker 2 (01:35:19):
Okay, terrible?
Speaker 6 (01:35:20):
We'll completely attitude.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
Yeah, so I guess what I would like? Detroit opened
up last year with the Rams? Correct, Yes, yes, didn't
they score like twenty six? Twenty seven points?
Speaker 8 (01:35:29):
Thirty one?
Speaker 2 (01:35:30):
Thirty one? Okay? All right, I thought I thought it
was about too. So if it's thirty one points, what's
the problem. Oh, you're gonna look at game two? Is
that what we're doing against Tampa? Yeah, so we're forgetting
game one and we're focusing on game two. Okay, I
got you. I don't know. I thought they scored twenty six.
Let me see here, Yeah, it was twenty six to twenty.
Speaker 6 (01:35:51):
I'm thinking about the playoff game. Oh no, I was
talking about the re Yeah, I know, I just I
switched them.
Speaker 2 (01:35:55):
Yeah, okay, and then they lost twenty to sixteen, and
then they won twenty to three team Okay, I get
it right.
Speaker 6 (01:36:02):
That's when the narratives started to catch a little speed.
Speaker 2 (01:36:04):
Before they pumped in forty two one Seattle.
Speaker 6 (01:36:06):
Yes, and then it went over Yeah, gotch. I think
you gotta give it to I think game four is
a little too early.
Speaker 2 (01:36:13):
Still.
Speaker 6 (01:36:14):
I think game six is maybe when you can let
that name, that narrative creep in a little bit, because
now you're you're almost to the halfway point. But you've
seen how teams can turn around in the second half
of the season in the NFL. You see it every
year team comes from the bottom of the standings all
the way to the top of the second half. They
catch fire. So I really don't think if they come
out of the gate a little squirrely, a little off,
(01:36:36):
that there should be any narrative that is pushed about
the coordinators, because there's still you saw it with Aaron Glench.
Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
The year before they were in Glenn. People want on fire.
Speaker 6 (01:36:46):
They were fired with ho talent.
Speaker 2 (01:36:48):
I hesitate to put numbers on things or timelines, but
at some point you know there is something that's going
to be it's worth trying to figure out who the
team is. Oftentimes were wrong about that. It's just the
nature of sports. Last year we were all wrong about
the Tigers. We had a decision on who they were,
(01:37:08):
We had defined them who they were. We were wrong
about it. Earlier this year, there was a definition in
Boston about Rafael Devers because my wife's family's from there.
They how much he struggled, turned out that he was okay.
There was a decision about Riley Green he needed to
go down to the miners. It turned out to be wrong. Okay,
(01:37:29):
So things like this are having I don't know if
it's four games, five games, six games. I think a
lot of it is based on what you're watching and
how it's trending. If they scored twenty points in week
one end up scoring twenty four in week two, their
offense looks good, but they miss an opportunity here and
unfortunate turnovers there, then I'm going to look at things
(01:37:50):
a little differently. So I don't know the number, but
I believe in the people who are performing the acts
of the offense. I believe in Jimi or Gibbs, and
I'm on Ross Saint Brown and Jared Goff and Jamison
Williams to a certain extent, Sam Laporta and most of
the other guys on that offense. I don't know what
they got in the middle of their offensive line. Nobody
(01:38:11):
does yet. All Right, A little worried about that, not
gonna lie, But overall, I feel pretty damn good about
the talent that they have on that side of the football.
Speaker 6 (01:38:21):
They are still one of the most talented offenses in
the entire National Football League, and I think that a
lot of people just speed past that to talk about
the coordinators and they don't want to talk about the
returning production. Yes, Frank, you're right, there are some cause
for concerns with the interior office.
Speaker 1 (01:38:39):
Hell yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:38:40):
And that is okay. That is a narrative that should
be talked about because there is no reason to show
that that is going to be a certain yes, that
they are going to be a top five unit like
they have been the last three years.
Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
It's a fact. Graham Glascow was okay last year. It
wasn't great. He's got another year. You're hoping he's better.
Tate Ratlie never played center. Look, they drafted him for
a reason that high. They know he's athletic. They how
fluid is he? How does his feet work? How does
he pass off one blocker to the next, How does
(01:39:14):
he get to the next level? Can he call out
the blocking schemes? All those things need to be decided.
But if you don't, if you're not concerned, then maybe
you're living in a Pollyannish life, because I would definitely
be concerned about that. And then the fact that Christian
Mahogany who played seventy three snaps last year, Right, it's
(01:39:34):
taking the place of a guy who played over a
thousand snaps. That's a massive difference. Right, guy doesn't have
a huge resume. He may be a beast, he may
look good. I hope he's going to be good. I
don't know that he is. But Dan Campbell said this
about the coordinators. He said, look, when asked about those
who think the lines may take a step back due
to their new coordinators. This is from the Detroit News.
(01:39:56):
He says, if you're asking me personally, yeah, I don't
think it's what it's played out to be. I've said
this before it's hurt to lose those two guys that
have been here from the beginning and who I have
a lot of trust and faith in. There's a lot
of communication that goes on that's not even said a
look here, there a nod of some body demeanor. But
(01:40:18):
it's just a little bit of what we have to
gain together between myself, Johnny Morton and Kelvin Sheppard. He
used the word shep but that's not me. But that
takes a minute, and it's gonna take some time, but
it's gonna come. So that's really good stuff, you know,
and I love the fact that he addressed it that way.
The problem with that is that people are gonna read
(01:40:40):
right past that. Yeah, we're reading right past it, and
it's gonna be a constant theme.
Speaker 7 (01:40:46):
They've been reading right past even national media who stepped
to the podium to say, this is an offense that
is Dan Campbell's, it is not Ben Johnson's. We don't
take away what Ben Johnson an Airgland bought, but there
was a lot of the foundation in a table setting
that was Dan camp from prior uh you know, times
with Bill Parcells and Sean Payton with the delights and
with the Saints.
Speaker 2 (01:41:07):
Why do you think they brushed past Dan Campbell? Tell
me why.
Speaker 8 (01:41:09):
I feel like they want so badly for their initial
reaction to be right.
Speaker 7 (01:41:13):
I feel like people, even though they have to tip
the capital respect, I don't think that people have quite
like the national narrative have quite come to the place
that we all know about Dan Campbell, and it's easy
for them to revert back to that when they think
the situation is giving. I think that this is a
year where Dan Campbell. We talked about what Brad Holmes
is in terms of a year reckoning. I think this
is a year where Dan Campbell is going to stand
(01:41:34):
out as a head coach.
Speaker 2 (01:41:35):
Why do you think they bring that up all the time.
I think that they or don't give him enough credit
for offense.
Speaker 6 (01:41:42):
I think they're easy to forget the struggles that he
had in year one with his ocs and where he
took over the play calling.
Speaker 2 (01:41:48):
Oh talk to Anthony Lynh.
Speaker 6 (01:41:50):
Yep and they figured out how this offense was going
to be successful and looked at hell of a lot
better when he started calling the plays. And Ben Johnson
only got that Moniker to start the next season. So
I think that there is a disbelief because he never
technically had an offensive coordinator job, that he's not a
play caller and can't install an offense.
Speaker 2 (01:42:11):
I think that's good. I think it has to do
with his opening press conference. Yeah, and I think people
view him as an ex player in a tight end
and the kneecap stuff and the cute little sayings and
all this other stuff, and they view him as more
of a director of the symphony rather than somebody who
actually plays an instrument in it. Yeah, And I don't
(01:42:32):
think that's fair at all, because I think he's a really,
really smart and good coach. Like coaching, I've never been
on headset. I've talked to head coaches plenty, but I've
never been on headset. Coaching is so much more than
just talking to us. It's part of it. But people
(01:42:55):
act like, Okay, you're not drawn up any plays. He's
involved in all that stuff. Yeah, all right, he manages
it all. He may not come up with every single
game plan, but he's part of every single game plan
that that team gets ready for. And too many of us,
i'll include myself, gloss over it, like Dan Campbell's just
(01:43:18):
putting on a headset and he's listening to what Kelvin
Shephard's defense is this year, and he's gonna say, all right,
go get him, guys, and it's one big I'm gonna
hand out the game ball at the end of the
damn show, right, give me a break man, you know. Oh,
he's signed the football and he forgot to give it
to Jared Goffer when eighteen for eighteen. That's ridiculous, that's
(01:43:39):
not what it is. Right. He's involved in all that stuff,
and he's got a really good player.
Speaker 1 (01:43:46):
He's a mascot, yeah exactly.
Speaker 7 (01:43:48):
No, But no, no, no, because I've heard that, and
that's where I think it's ultimately disrespectful to a Dan
Campbell and to all the people he identifies.
Speaker 8 (01:43:56):
Can you imagine if you're the next up and they're
saying you picked a mascot.
Speaker 2 (01:44:00):
No.
Speaker 7 (01:44:01):
Dan Campbell has meticulously gone and handled everything from instilling
the plays, getting even John Moore in the beginning to
lay a foundation, and then bringing other people who he
knew could come in and take it further from there
as a manager, as a play caller. He has had
this thing down pat and I don't think he gets
more the credit.
Speaker 2 (01:44:18):
I don't either, It's funny how you know they'll complain
about some of the sayings that he has because he played.
But Marty Morningwood comes in and if you can't stand it,
he never played. I give me the football guy right now.
That doesn't mean it's always going to be top to
bottom best every single week. But he's proven he knows
(01:44:41):
what the hell he's doing, all right. And it's not
just hey, you know what, he's a coach. He's a
player's coach and all that other crap. No, that dude
gets after it. He knows what he's doing. He puts
in those long hours. He deserves a lot of that credit.
Now he's got a lot of talent. Pro Football Focus
has come out with its top fifty players. How many
Lions are on the top fifty?
Speaker 1 (01:45:04):
We we know.
Speaker 8 (01:45:04):
So Chat family, what you think? Man? Get your answers
to how many thinks?
Speaker 1 (01:45:07):
I don't want to answer in the top four.
Speaker 7 (01:45:09):
Yeah, that's why I got the screen just on you
right now. Give our chat family a little bit of
time to play along.
Speaker 2 (01:45:14):
So there there are there are when you want me
to hold off on the number, I mean, they don't
have to answer. That's that's okay. There are four in
the top fifty, Pennay Sewell, Aiden Hutchinson, I'm on Ross,
Saint Brown, and Jamier Gibbs. It's not surprising. Do they
(01:45:35):
deserve more and if so, who is it? I like
this list better than writers lists, and I like this
list better than some of the ESPN lists where we've
talked about where they've had executives, scouts and coaches unnamed
Pro Football Focus. They don't have to put a name.
It's all about numbers, and it's about wins above replacement.
(01:46:00):
So that's not just a baseball thing. It's wins above replacement. Like,
if you like wins above replacement, look at Aaron Judge
leaders wins above replacement. He's a baller. Okay, it's ten
point eight a year ago. Put that in perspective, Trek
Scuba last year was what six point eight? And it's
not one of those things where you're making up on
a test. Oh I just missed too, and I can
suddenly make my percentage go from seventy percent to eighty percent. No,
(01:46:24):
it takes a lot to make that up. Takes a lot.
So that's what I like about this. I love the
fact that this is Pro Football Focus and they're basing
it on all the different numbers that are most important
in the sport of football.
Speaker 6 (01:46:39):
I do like that aspect of it, but I believe
the numbers are flawed in this regard because I think
that the people who are taking the stats are a
little biased. Shout out to Easy and Spencer for really
diving in on this one. They showed they got into
a Twitter argument about Pro Football Focus and about Penny
Stool versus Lane Johnson, and they were pulling up tap
(01:47:00):
of Lane Johnson and Penney Sool and they're counting one
thing as a sack for Penny School who only let
up one sack last year, but at the same play
didn't count as a sack for Lane Johnson for whatever reason.
So I have a very big issue with how they
take their numbers to make this list because I personally
think that the a couple of these numbers are too low.
Speaker 2 (01:47:22):
But how would they Homers when it's it's it's Pro
Football focused. They're not. They're not in Detroit, they're not
in Philadelphia.
Speaker 6 (01:47:29):
I'm not saying it's home it's a Homer thing. I'm
just saying that I don't think that there's a consistency
with how they measure the stats. I think that they
have some I don't understand it. I've just seen these
the tape that Spencer and Easy have pulled, and it
is Jalen Hurts scrambling to the right lane. Johnson lets
his guy go and he sacks Jalen Hurts, and they
(01:47:51):
don't count it as a sack.
Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
Penny seool kind of a tackle for losses what they counted.
Speaker 6 (01:47:56):
They might have, but he was still in the pocket.
Speaker 2 (01:47:59):
And Jared, oh, I thought you said he scrambled to
the right, so he's still in the pocket.
Speaker 7 (01:48:03):
He was.
Speaker 6 (01:48:03):
If we're counting the pocket as where the tackles are
at their edges, he was still in that area, So
I believe it should be a sack. They kind of
believe counted as a tackle for the loss, like you said,
And I think that's where.
Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
Do you think that? And look, that's a really good example.
Give him credit. How many examples could you use the
other way?
Speaker 6 (01:48:24):
There no one we can be able to provide any
examples in the counter tweets at Spencer.
Speaker 2 (01:48:29):
Because because we could, we could be very selective in
art art decisions with our guys too. Can you separate
yourself from your fandom of the Detroit Lions and recognize
the Eagles offensive line was much better than the Lions
offensive line last year, and that Lane Johnson actually might
be a really good player, as good as, if not
(01:48:52):
better than, a guy like Penney Seoel. I'll take Penny School.
Don't get me wrong.
Speaker 6 (01:48:56):
I'm just saying I think there's definitely an argument to
be made. Lane Johnson is a better PAS blocker than
Penney School, but Penny Stools a better run blocker. And
I think that you could go either way, and the
cases have been made on a lot of different occasions,
and I personally believe that Penny Stool is more dominant
on a play to play basis versus Lane Johnson, and
(01:49:17):
that's why I would take him over Lane Johnson.
Speaker 2 (01:49:19):
I'll tell you what's interesting. The highest rated tackle is
not Lane Johnson, and it's not Penney School.
Speaker 6 (01:49:26):
It's Tristan Wurf's.
Speaker 2 (01:49:27):
No, it's Jordan Malata. He's the highest rated player. Kristin
Wurfs is the second highest rated tackle and all of them,
and Rashawn Slater is higher than Penney Seoel and Lane Johnson.
Trent Williams is higher than Lane Johnson and Penne Sewel,
(01:49:49):
and Lane Johnson is higher than Penney Suel, but they're close,
They're really close to one another. Penny Sewell is ranked
twenty one, Lane Johnson is nineteen. So if we're looking
at Lane Johnson only, I mean, unless we want to
break it down by right tackles, okay, because Trent Williams
is a left tackle, as you know, and a lot
is a left tackle as you know, so so is Worfs.
(01:50:11):
So maybe it's a little different. Okay, So if you
stick to right tackle only, Lane Johnson is ahead of them,
all right. I'm not gonna nitpick over you know, two
spots there. I just look at I think we in
Detroit look at Penney Sewel as a as the best
offensive lineman dash offensive tackle in football and pro football
(01:50:33):
focused and ESPN's would say, no, how do we how
do we deal with that? And we're convinced that our
guy is the best, and then somebody else is telling
us they're not.
Speaker 7 (01:50:46):
But that's when when you look at the argument they
have right now, b John Robinson ten spots effectively ahead
of Jamiir Gibbs.
Speaker 2 (01:50:54):
Even though I like John Robinson a lot, I think
he's really good.
Speaker 7 (01:50:57):
I like him a lot, But everything Jamiir Gibbs did,
even sharing a backfield, and he still outperformed by John Robinson.
Speaker 8 (01:51:04):
That's the stuff to me that I just don't understand.
Speaker 7 (01:51:06):
It took so many more touches for b John Robinson
to barely barely have more.
Speaker 8 (01:51:11):
Rushing yards than Jamier Gibbs.
Speaker 7 (01:51:14):
But Jamier Gibbs sixteen touchdowns to the fourteen for bijon
five point six per carry versus four point eight, and
Jon had three hundred and four carries to two hundred
and fifty for Jamiir. Then you look at Jamiir Gibbs
in the receiving game, you're talking about five hundred and
seventy seventeen yards, four touchdowns and almost ten yards a catch.
(01:51:34):
That's huge when you compare that to just one receiving
touchdown seven point one average receiving four of b Jon
Robinson and just four hundred and.
Speaker 8 (01:51:42):
Thirty one yards.
Speaker 7 (01:51:43):
So for me personally, I'm looking at a guy in
Jamier Gibbs who didn't have as many opportunities, but still
I performed the B John Robinson. But PFF will tell
you there's a ten spot difference between the two.
Speaker 2 (01:51:55):
It just it doesn't seems like a lot. It seems
like a lot. I don't know what numbers. This is
all up to the individual. What numbers are matter most
to you. I mean, if you like you bring up
the rushing touchdowns. I mean, if that's the case. Barry
Sanders is never in that conversation because the most he
had was sixteen. It did lead a league. But for
the most part, he's ten eleven rushing touchdowns and he,
(01:52:18):
to me, is the greatest running back of all time.
So I think we got to be careful when we
start comparing numbers. PFF takes more than just those numbers
into account for a player. I'm not saying i'd take
b John Robinson over Jamiir Gibbs. I wouldn't. I think
the discrepancy were talked about is the thing that bothers
us most. You can almost accept that your guy is
(01:52:38):
second on the list of best running backs or or
or best you best tackles.
Speaker 8 (01:52:45):
I'll never accept Bison in front of Jamier Gibbs.
Speaker 2 (01:52:48):
I can't.
Speaker 8 (01:52:48):
I respect him, Okay, but Jamiir has just been a
better back to this point.
Speaker 2 (01:52:51):
So you'd take Derrick Henry over him, You're okay with
that because Derrick Henry is way over him too.
Speaker 7 (01:53:00):
How come you don't have a problem with Derrick Henry
because Derek Henry has been a better back as it
relates to a number one as well.
Speaker 2 (01:53:07):
We're talking about last year. We're talking about last year only, right, Yeah, okay,
so you you would take.
Speaker 8 (01:53:14):
Derrick Jamior Gibbs was better than bee John Robinson last year.
Speaker 2 (01:53:17):
He just was. He's been better, not better than Derrick Henry.
Speaker 6 (01:53:21):
Yeah, so you can make an argument for Derrick Henry
better for sure. And I think that the only players
I'm willing to accept above Jamiir Gibbs is Derrick Henry
and Saquon Barkley. I think that that's where the list
starts and ends.
Speaker 7 (01:53:36):
In this almost out of a with Derrick Henry. There's
a certain level of respect with Saquan. He absolutely earned it. Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:53:45):
Yeah, Look, I get it. I give you a lot
of credit for willing to say, you know, oh, there
was a respect and stuff. We're talking about a year
to your basis here, I mean, if you're gonna go respect,
so you're you're telling me that Garrett Cole is going
to be better than kerk schoolbl right, because I mean
I don't respect and what he's done and what he's
won and all that other stuff. But let's talk. Let's
talk about one year and one year alone. Okay, I'm
(01:54:09):
not I'm not saying Derrick Henry is worse because he
had a He had a really good year, don't get
me wrong. But who do you want? Who do you
want to throw the ball to? I mean, because you
brought up the yards receiving and all that other stuff,
who do you want? B? Jhon Robinson was third in
the league in rushing? What was wrong with that? So
you can't you can't tell me that you could accept
Derrick Henry because of the respect thing.
Speaker 8 (01:54:31):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
B John Robinson's earned some respect too, man.
Speaker 8 (01:54:34):
He earned some respect.
Speaker 7 (01:54:35):
But when you look at Derek Carry, you're looking at
almost four to five hundred yards rushing more than B.
John Robinson and Jamier Gibbs. You're looking at a couple
hundred yards receiving. So he wasn't absent in that part
of the game. But you know, when you put the
ball in his hands, he too was going out there
and getting you more yards per carry over B.
Speaker 8 (01:54:53):
John Robinson.
Speaker 2 (01:54:53):
So it's yards it's yard per he put up.
Speaker 7 (01:54:56):
He put up overall more total yards than the Jamiro Gibbs,
So it's like by a little bit, and that's why
I took the cap. And when you're talking about the yards,
with Derek Henry being third, that's fourteen fifty six on
a year Jamier Gibbs was fourteen twelve on nearly fifty
five less carries.
Speaker 6 (01:55:13):
Yeah, I think yards per attempt is probably my biggest
value stat when it comes to a running back, and
I think that Derrick Henry deserves that respect purely off
of last year putting up nineteen hundred yards deserves a
ton of respect almost.
Speaker 8 (01:55:30):
Six yards of carry.
Speaker 2 (01:55:32):
Do you think running behind Detroit's offensive line hurt Jamir
Gibbs in this Pro Football Focus, Deshaun Robinson doesn't have
the offensive line that Jamiir Gibbs had.
Speaker 6 (01:55:41):
One hundred percent?
Speaker 2 (01:55:42):
Okay, And we all know this is a team sport.
We all know that that's a factor. Okay, So how
much should that weigh into account when we're talking about
this type of stuff.
Speaker 6 (01:55:52):
I'm assuming they also weigh yards. I don't know the
technical term, but untouched yards where the ball carrier is
free running through the offensive line where he doesn't get
a hand on him for the first three yards. I
think that some type of stat they do take into
account where I think clean pockets and running lanes are
(01:56:15):
very valued. Sure where I do think that did hurt
Jamier Gibbs because he had plenty of clear running lanes
where You're right, Bejon Robinson does not have that luxury.
That Atlanta offensive line is nowhere as good as the
Lions offensive line, especially because he's leaned on a lot
more in the screen game than Jamiir Gibbs is because
(01:56:35):
of the fact that they need to get the ball
to him in space with open areas to run.
Speaker 2 (01:56:40):
Bejon Robinson is top ten top ten in Pro Football
focuses grades rushing, passing, and mistackles forced. So there's some
there's a method behind their menness. I'm not saying it's
the right way. I'm just saying their method was. You're
looking at attempts forced, missed tackles, yards attempt after contact,
(01:57:07):
and b Jon Robinson was second in each of those
to Derrick Henry. Hmm. So that's why I'm not again,
I'm not telling you that it's right. I'll take Jamiir
Gibbs every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Speaker 7 (01:57:21):
I think that they're favoring probably more of the workhorse
that we've seen Bjeon b because he's had to.
Speaker 8 (01:57:27):
Be there, Like I can't.
Speaker 7 (01:57:28):
I can't deny that he has had to be a
bell cow and a workhorse for them that Jamiir hasn't. Yeah,
but that's what makes Jamiir Gibbs so intriguing, is that
what happens when you start to increase that usage even more,
And we saw it when David Montgomery went out, Jamiir
Gibbs took another step forward. But Bijon has proven he
can definitely take the hits, he can take the contact,
(01:57:49):
he could take the physicality. He can make people miss
at all levels, you know. And so I don't I
don't disrespect Jon.
Speaker 2 (01:57:57):
He's one of the most dangerous dual threat players, not
just running backs, dual threat players in the National Football League.
Jamier Gibbs is without a doubt. It'll be very interesting
to monitor how much usage David Montgomery gets compared to
Jamier Gibbs this year.
Speaker 1 (01:58:17):
I agree.
Speaker 6 (01:58:17):
I think it's going to be leaning even more Jamiar
Gibbs than it was last year. But I don't think
that David Montgomery will have some miniscule role where he
won't have over ten touches a game. He still will
get his carries, he still will play a pivotal part
in this offense. But I do think some of the
goal line work that he gets where in the beginning
of the year, you went down to the goal line
(01:58:38):
and you knew the ball was going to go to
Dave Montgomery. Yeah, I think there will be times where
Jamiir Gibbs is in the game on the goal line
to give you a different look. I think that's going
to start to happen more. And I think that you're
going to start to see Jamiir Gibbs in there as
a blocker at some points, which I prefer.
Speaker 8 (01:58:52):
To be good at that too.
Speaker 6 (01:58:54):
That to it, he proved it.
Speaker 8 (01:58:55):
It was very That's what That's what I like about him.
Speaker 2 (01:58:57):
I mean, I I think he is literally the all
everything back. I think he's a really good blocker. First
of all, he's a really smart player, so he sees
what the quarterback has seen when it comes to Yeah,
so I really like the high football like Q and
I think he's really good at every phase of a
running back. Now he'll he'll be the first to admit,
you know, I've got stuff to work on, but I
(01:59:18):
love that aspect of him blocking, catching, running, you know,
the the intricacies it takes to play the position. It's
really fun to watch him. We're lucky, Okay, we're lucky
because we we've got two really good backs as long
as Montgomery is one hundred percent, two really good backs
that they can rely.
Speaker 6 (01:59:34):
And we're lucky enough to have two explosive enough players
who every time they touch the ball they could score
a touchdown, and Jamiy Gibbs and Jamison Williams, which a
lot of teams in the NFL cannot say that they
can give two players the ball at any point on
the field and they can go score a touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (01:59:49):
And every defense has got a you know, account for him.
Speaker 7 (01:59:52):
I got to get to some of these supersats over here,
and one that's not a super sat all right, Blake
Apollo being on Ye he took a take a smoke
break and he's okay.
Speaker 2 (02:00:02):
Now he doesn't have to apologize. He said, that's okay.
Speaker 8 (02:00:05):
He loves it.
Speaker 2 (02:00:05):
He's fine. I mean, I love I love the debate.
I think it's really healthy, you know. And you helped
me think of things differently too. That's what this is
supposed to be all about.
