Speaker 2 (00:50):
Do not blame my partner for him looking over his
shoulder every once in a while. Now you have that
bubblegum machine, you know, the one that goes red and
blue and white yellow. Welcome everybody on the first day
edition of the Brayln Edwards Show. Kool Aid Ricky are here.
We're glad you are here with us on Woodward Sports
as well. A little long piece of paper there in
(01:12):
front of you.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Look, man, I'm telling you like this, I knew it
was bound to happen. I haven't gotten a traffic citation,
if you will, I think the last time I got
one was COVID. Imagine that last time I got one
was COVID. But today, driving back from DGC, got a
chance to go out there, played with doctor Serie. Appreciate
you having me out to DGC. Played so well. M
(01:35):
I'll get back into that though. But as I'm leaving
them around, I get pulled over right before nine mile
on what We're pull over to a side street because
I'm very safe. I'm a safe individual, take my time
pull over to the side street. Also, I think cops
respect that. I think so you know, it changes the
energy and what they come up to you. So cop
comes up to me, said, you know I'm pulling you over.
(01:57):
I said, no, officer, actually I don't, because I saw
you were I'd literally just come down the ramp. He said,
you were going forty eight to fifty and thirty five.
Like I said, whatever, I don't believe I was neither
here nor there. Takes my driver's license. He disappears for
about seven minutes. He comes back and he said mister Edwards,
(02:19):
he said, I hate to have to give you anything,
because I appreciate what you did. I'm a Michigan fan,
he said. But they literally put me out here today
for blah blah blah blah blah, he said. But I'm
gonna do you this favorite, he said, as opposed to
two hundred and seventy five dollars and two points, he said,
I'm gonna just give you this unsafe start, and it's
(02:40):
one hundred and thirty dollars no points. You can take
care of it ten days. I think it's half of that. Wow,
So I think it's even cheaper than that. So as
opposed to approach this like everybody else. Oh, going back
to the golf rond, I played so well today. I
didn't even know what about it I played. So I
sat eighty four and a d g C south from
(03:01):
not north, so not north, which is a more difficult course.
South still is the DGC course. Eighty four played well
down in very very relaxed and very chill that.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
How many potts you caught? Your putts? Uh?
Speaker 5 (03:15):
The golf app does, let me see it one A
ton of puts. Putting has been the best thing that
I've done in the last three four weeks or so.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Proot three one that's really good, that's really.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
It was a blow up on thirteen a triple bogie.
That's the only I had that was.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Everything else was either a bogie or double bogey.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
Or part and then the last whole told Doc, I said, hey, look,
let's finish on a birdie. Let's finish on a birdy
part five dog right, I was essentially on in two.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Got a badge your funny just off thirty right.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
I was probably about seven inches off the frames seven
in Okay, you know, got a batter read. Sorry, Doc,
I gotta call you. I got a horb red from
a member.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Horrible read.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
From Amber members. Even the member Doc is a stick.
Doc is a too handicapped. Docs were giving me the
line all day, and I followed the line, mixed in
with what I saw, and all of a sudden he
gave me a completely bogus line. Bogus line, and it
even breaks the same way. It'd be different if it
was like broke a little bit after or you know,
(04:28):
making sure it took it out just a little bit
for the opposite way.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
So I had to recover for a park, so you know,
and I marked it. I didn't recovery though I didn't
do anything funny. I still took the park, but doc
he blew the read. But no, it was just such
a fun easy run. Man. The weather was beautiful outside.
So you know, they came up to me and told me, hey,
I'm gonna give you a ticket, but no points, no
two seventy five. Cool. I think so many people get
(04:56):
caught up on forgetting that they did break the law. Yeah,
at some point, like you still broke the law, regardless
of if you know, the cops should have not pulled
you over, if he could have been cool or whatever
was going on. I was at fifty according to him,
So I'll take the one thirty, I'll take the round.
And I got a chance to get back to the
show and kick it.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
And you were here on time. That's that's all it
really matters.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
You really, you really, Scottie Seffler, for real?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, you really are.
Speaker 6 (05:21):
Without the picture.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
First of all, without the picture, without the jumpsuit.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
First of all, you ain't putting hands on me. I'll
tell you like this, you got another thing coming. You
got another thing coming. You track with hands on me.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I'll tell you, man, I I got a number of friends,
some in Detroit, some of the suburbs of Detroit, to
or police officers just to respect them, like nobody's fas Yeah, because.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
It's a ton of it's a ton of jackasses, but
it's a ton of jackasses in every profession. This guy
was cool, He was very nice, he was very polite.
You know, he didn't have to give me the one thirty.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, it doesn't take much. Anytime I get pulled over,
and I got pulled over in Ferndale or the late
I think two years ago, I put my hands right
right on the wheel right away, right away. I could
be handled away, and I just, you know, don't not
making any sudden movements. I'm not. Buddy of mine told
me that he's been a captain. He was a captain
in the warm police department. He's a captain elsewhere now
(06:17):
and he's just said, look, all it takes is this,
roll a window down, put your hands on the on
the wheel, steering wheel. You'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
No quick movement.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, I'm good with that. You know, once I ran
a stop sign, pulls me over right away, even if
it's just running stop. You know what you did I do?
Know what I did. I didn't come to the complete stop.
There's the paper ticket. Okay, we're good. I admit it.
I didn't come to the complete stop like I should have. Yeah,
but you handled it the right way. Good for you.
I'm glad you got a little bit of a break there.
But I'm even more happy that the golf game continues.
(06:48):
Have you played every day this week?
Speaker 5 (06:50):
No? No, no, no?
Speaker 7 (06:51):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Once?
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Well yeah, I think so you go for a perfect way.
I know you played Tuesday night. I know you played
Wednesday night and Monday, so you have played every day?
Speaker 5 (07:01):
All right, So I'm not playing tomorrow, I'm not playing Saturday.
I'm not playing Sunday. I'm going to take a couple
of days off. Even that process goes a little different
from certain people.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Are you progressively getting better? Do you notice it?
Speaker 5 (07:13):
I am? I am, because I'm starting to doll into consistency,
Like I'm starting to understand the shots, like when I
get in certain places, I know a club, I'm starting
to I'm starting to ask the questions, how far to
the front right? Yeah, where's the pin placement? Because there
was a shot today where I asked the question, Tell
you know, you know how much to the pen? So
(07:35):
one seventy. So I grabbed my seven iron. I said, cool,
I hit a light seven. I can take my seven
hour like two some change, but light seven is to
be fine. Then I asked, I said, where's the pin at?
He said, well, the pens in the back it's one
seventy he said, it's one fifty nine to the front,
and the greens were rolling today. Immediately take the seven out,
(07:57):
put it back in the bag, grab my nine iron,
playing my nine to the front, and a rolling about
twelve feet from the pen. But those are the type
of things I'm downing into now. I'm not doing that
last year to the year before that. I'm just one
seventy club gets me one seven now.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Course management, I mean, that's what you've got to know
where you're playing. Anytime I'm playing with somebody, hay, is
short good here? Or is long good? Yeah? You can
see right or left for crying out loud because you
got either bunkers or you got water or you crap.
But are if do I want to be long on this?
Speaker 7 (08:31):
Like?
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Is there a ridge there? If I don't know, there's
a there's a two tiered ridge on the green. I
want to hit that back when I'd rather be long
than short, right, putting up two different ridges, I'd rather
be a little bit longer.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
So also, what I'm trying to do is like women
have no ego in golfing, Like I mean, obviously there's
when you get on tour, but women don't have ego
with golfing. They just want to do what you're supposed
to do to become better men Do men want to
pull out the big sticks loan ball. I'm trying to
take the ego out of the game. So, yeah, I
can drive on this hole. But is should I just
(09:04):
fill my five out?
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Should I just take a five irons to this? You
know what I'm saying, give myself a better shot, so
I don't risk the left where there's no space on
the left side or there's water on the right. So
even things like that are getting me better in the game.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah. I remember reading an article by Tiger Woods who
said you take the danger out of it. Right, So
if you've got to if you've got a bunker that
is in front of the pin, all right, I'm talking
about your where you hope to land it. What's wrong
with landing it? To the left and then taking the
approach there, yeah, you know, or landing a short or
(09:37):
short and doing that. What I've started to do is
hit two yardage. Where am I good from? I'm really
good from one hundred yards, then I'm going to hit something.
I don't have to smoke every single ball that I hit.
That's that's the hardest thing, man. So why would I
hit to let's say, sixty five yards just because I
can hit this club a little bit longer than another.
When I'm not great at from sixty five, But if
(09:58):
I'm really good from one hundred back off a club,
hit it to one hundred and then I'm bound to
get it a little bit closer, you see what I'm saying.
So that's good for you. I mean, that's that's how
you learn the game a little bit better. I mean,
it took me way too long to learn that, and
it still doesn't really help my score that much. But
it's hard to get away from the game, the game
(10:19):
that you love the most, you know, football for you,
for sure. We're all different a little bit. But there's
two of the greatest players in the world, Connor McDavid
and Leon Driveside love hockey They are truly two of
the I would say to the top four players in
the world. Connor McDavid's the best ones. The way he
(10:40):
skates is just absolutely beautiful. But it wasn't long ago
where they were in Ontario, I believe, and they were
caught up in a They saw a Beer League hockey
game taking place, so they put on there Edmonton Eulers
practiced jerseys and joined the guys playing on the Beer
(11:01):
League and had a black seemed to be having a
lot of fun doing it. They obviously weren't going full board,
not one hundred percent. They didn't score, their team lost
six to two. They were just having some fun though, right,
I mean, this is a lot of times what pros do. Yeah,
have you ever been in that situation? No where guys are, hey,
come on, join us, And I don't like football is
(11:22):
a lot different.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
But football is different because like hockey players like d
Mac and you know some of those guys, they still
go out And I went to the Red Wings Hall
of Fame alumni game that they do every year. Guys
are seven, You're still playing out there. So the sports different.
Basketball players they still can kind of just sit in
the corner. You put up some shots flag football like no,
thank you, Like when I hung my cleats up, I
(11:44):
hung my cleats up. But other spaces softball and give
me on the golf course, give me the softball feel
like I'm diving to some softball and get competitive and
try to get those uses going. But I don't get
I don't get pulled into that. You get to these
golf outings, guys, get the drink in or you're wherever. Hey, man,
I bet I can beat you in this. I bet
(12:05):
I can do this. Hey, line up right now, I
bet I can cover you. I bet I can take you.
When I was thirty, like now, no, First of.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
All, it did take the bait when you were younger.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
I was younger. Yeah, yeah, And you know Connor mc
david was a younger player. He is a younger guy.
So it's fun. Thirty, I'm having fun. I'm out there,
I'm getting it in. I'm still doing it. But at
this age, no, you can't and I'm not interested.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, this is a good shot of it. Good job
by kool aid to get us this to uh, just
to be on the same ice as that dude and
look at all the people. Suddenly he draws a massive crowd,
and of course in Canada, you're about to do that.
The referees were interviewed afterwards. They were in awe that
they were on the same ice as that guy. It's
I think it shows a really fun personal side of athletes. Yeah,
(12:51):
I think the one you know, we can complain about
social media we want, but the one thing it has
allowed is that it's allowed some athletes to showcase their
personality and change people's opinion. I said this for a while.
Bryson Deshamba was a guy who was an absolutely most
people thought he was an absolute jackass. Well he starts
(13:12):
doing these videos right, these YouTube videos shout out to YouTube.
Since we're on that right now on what Ward Sporting
there and I was waiting for the bell and then
but here's what happened, better late than ever. Suddenly people
love this guy because he showedcasing his personality.
Speaker 5 (13:29):
I think a lot of times when you're young in it,
you you can only focus on what you're trying to accomplish,
and that's golf. Like you know saying, for me it
was football, but for him it's golf. I need to
dial into golf. It's all I'm doing is golf. I
want to be the best golfer. And then once you
start playing well, here comes the pressure. Now you gotta
deal with pressure, and then you have to deal with
other things. I don't think he in the beginning he
(13:51):
didn't have enough wherewithal where he understood the game, he
understood the fans, and he understood how he can implement
this and be less serious here. This that the third
now with social media, with COVID, with a couple of things,
and he's you know, he's now showing you on social media.
He's got the whole in one challenge at his house
where he's shooting over the house and he's got people
coming to do that and it's fun. Then you get
(14:13):
relaxed and like you said, you d R and people
like you DR and people, oh, you know, this guy
isn't like that. This guy isn't what I thought he
might have been. Or this guy is now better, he's different,
he's growing, he's maturing, so that's cool. I didn't like him.
I had a chance to see him at the Rocket
Mortgage and like that was when that energy was still there.
It was twenty twenty two, twenty twenty one, and he
(14:35):
had a bomb on his part. Five man, I thought
he was like four hundred and five yard he hit
four hundred and five. But yeah, like then he was
he was all golf and he didn't know anything else.
Plus he's a little different. Yeah, and that's the other
thing people are talking about, like he's on the spectrum
a little bit, and that's cool. I got on a spectrum,
So it's not it's not disrespectful at all. And people
(14:56):
have to get used to operating in that space. And
now fast forward a couple of years, he's used to
operating in that space. People have made it easier. He's
got more better people around.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Him that So yeah, I would guess golf probably almost
as much as any other sport, gets what we were
just talking about with econor McDavid, where people actually want
to see because anytime somebody would have covered you, knocked
the ball away from you when you were younger, beat
you in anything, that's the line they deliver at the
(15:29):
next tech part. So it's hey, man, what's going on?
Not much and good game by Michigan today. Yeah, Brayln
Edwards three touchdowns. That's awesome. By the way, you know,
I covered him one day when we were in high school.
I covered him and he didn't catch pass against me.
He caught five on the day, but he didn't care.
That's the line every single time for somebody against somebody
(15:50):
like you.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
And that's real. Like if you if you don't believe
that's real, try to find footage of Lebron James getting
war and camp. Guess what you can't because they scrubbed it.
He got worked over three times, three times, and one
of them was.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
From Detroit High School.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
George Joe Craft. Yeah, no, it was George Jordan's Je's brother. Yeah,
it was Joe's brother, Jordan Jordan's destroyed hand on him.
This is when he used to do his camp. So
Ron used to camp. But to your point, people were
trying him. Does mean to make a name. Dunked on
him Lebron and his team, but it took him innute.
(16:30):
But yeah, that's serious.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Yeah, there's a little video of uh grateful. Yeah, there's
a video of uh of Tyler Kill Tyreek Hill covering
a little kid at one of his foot Yeah, well,
you know, the kid kind of fakes him out.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
He did after making a happened a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
It's a jab step one way and he circled back
the other. Yeah, I mean that kid's gonna he's got that.
Mom and dad have that locked in their phone, and
that kid until he's fifty, we'll be talking about that
without question.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
The funny thing about it is like athletes or like
younger kids, they take that man, I got Tyreek killed,
and then people take it like, oh, man, Treik's not
this or this that, And the third he's a wide receiver,
like who is passionate? Who is passionate about helping kids?
So he goes all these camps, like when Tarika's out
there doing that, Like he's doing that with every kid. Yeah,
so imagine through the course of three days of camp,
(17:25):
he's done this with a hundred times. And yes, some
Florida kid, they have talent minds you makes a play
on them, congratulations, Like I'm sorry, is he Diona Sanders?
Is he Patrick Certain? Or certain? Where this is?
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Like whoa, yeah, no, it's a It's a great point.
I mean the kid was only eight, but still, that
is a really good point. I think golfers, perhaps and
all of us love the sport. We're not very good,
but that's okay. You know, we're not as good as
we'd like to be the challenge. It's part of the challenge, right,
because it's it can be really frust but so rewarding.
(18:01):
But even if you just play around with a pro,
you might par a hole. Hey, I part sixteen by
the way, you know what it's part sixteen, Ricky follower.
So I shot the same. That's what we're constantly, you know,
comparing ourselves to because I think golf is one of
those sports where because you can go out and hit
(18:22):
how far does this this dude and I are playing
the same hole and you can actually tip it from
the same Uh. Yeah, I wouldn't play tips. You're right,
you would.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
I played today, you can't.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Eighty four from the tips is.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Wait for I damn, I didn't know. I didn't really
play the tips. Ricky saw my first seven holes? Yeah,
you can see. And then.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
That's impressive, man, that that's really impressive from the tips. Okay,
that's you got you got me?
Speaker 5 (18:55):
South is easier to know if I filled that out. Listen,
a craft.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
I don't care if you're playing are threes from the tip?
Speaker 5 (19:01):
Right?
Speaker 7 (19:01):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (19:01):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
I'm just telling you when you were playing the same
hole as somebody you feel like you can actually do something.
They're doing something that you're watching on team and you're like,
I'm doing that later on this afternoon. Yeah, I'm gonna
hit an eight iron? How far am I going to
hit it? I'm gonna play a hole like that? How
am I gonna fare with it? It's one of those sports,
I think where you can actually try to compare yourself
even though there really is no compar You're right.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
In every other sport, Like you know, you can go
to check this out. You can go to LCA. You
can get on that court. If you have connections somehow
or whatever, you can get on that court and you
can nail a three from Steph Curry range and say, man,
I'm out here, like yeah, insert insert athlete. But you
know who's not out there. The crowd, you know who's
not out there. The defense, you know it's not out there. Fatigue,
(19:45):
you know it's not out there. A coach is on
your head. Now you're in your head. Football, you don't
have pass. You can catch passing the end zone.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Go to the u M.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
They take people on tours all the time. You can
catch pass in the same corner at Desmond Hower. You
know struct the polls or try what it should have
struck the post. Guess what's not out there? Pads one
hundred and fifteen thousand, fatigue, the whole nine yards golf,
you can do the same thing. The fans aren't out there,
but they're not that loud anyway.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
Yeah, they literally tell them to be quiet.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
It's and what's Brooks? Brooks is good for that? Kea kepka.
He's good for shutting the crowd.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
I've always I've always wondered that too. Like I was
playing with somebody a couple of weekends ago and they
were talking and I was, you know, addressing the ball
if you want to, and they said, oh, I'm sorry.
I said, I don't care. I play music. I don't
care you guys. I don't want you to scream at me. Yeah,
you know, but I don't mind if you guys are
having a conversation. That doesn't bother me. I've never understood
(20:40):
why golf had to be that. But that's a little
different with live right, live plays music. Yeah, it is.
It is much different that it.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
Is kind of like drunk and chaos.
Speaker 8 (20:49):
Yah.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
I saw a video today.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
It was a whole in one video and uh, it's.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Kodak back Kodak Black playing in the background.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
But there though like him as Rocky and they have
a whole line up. For a matter of fact, Live
is at the Cardinal and at the twenty second at
the end a huge party and I think at the
end of it is Swedish House Mafia, who by the way,
I thought they retired like twenty years ago. Every year
request for them last week, man, I love the music
when I was younger, but like Jesus strikes, how long
(21:18):
can you listen to house Man?
Speaker 2 (21:21):
So, yeah, they're gonna be there. Live is going to
be there.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
I'm gonna try to go.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
It's gonna be It's gonna be a really fun I
mentioned it's a really fun event.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
It is.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
It's gonna have a much different feel than the Rocket
Classic Rocket.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Rockets been fun. This year was you know, so you
won't say anything like that, but you can see that
they're turning over preparing for a different influx of what
rockets gonna look like. So it was a little on
the chiller side this year. I think next year you
get back to Live Slash PG.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, the Waste Management Part three Arena a hole if
you will there's there's one for that. There's in the
Canadian Open. They've got a really cool heritage. Yeah, I
would like to see, yeah where they can where people
get really loud and crazy.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
Did you see the RBC heritage was two years ago?
They put that sixty foot was it sixty feet up
in the air on the scaffold that you could take
you could pay to do. And it was a bar.
It was a floating bar and it had I want
to say, maybe ten seats, five five bartender in the middle.
Pretty cool and it was floating above like maybe like
the fourteenth sixty to seventy feet up.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
No, thank you, I wouldn't I wouldn't mind doing that.
I do think I love the folks at Rocket. I
think they're fantastic. I love that that event is in Detroit.
I think it's really important to the PGA. A shout
out to to Mark Hollis who works for Rock, because
he's the one who really pushed hard to get bigger
names at the Rocket Classic this year, and they did.
(22:54):
This is their this was their best field, even though
a lot of them didn't make the cut. I do
wonder about that a little bit on why so many
didn't make the cut.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
But because they got pain.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Yeah, but but I digress. I would like to see
them do something of that ilk. I'm not saying a
floating bar, but I would like to see something become
a signature for them. All right, there are certain things.
Anytime there is something special, all right, then there's a
chance to at a at a facility, an arena, stadium,
(23:25):
whatever the case may be, you remember it. You want
to be known for something. Boston's known for, you know,
the Green Monster. New York's known for, Monument Park whatever.
I would like to see the Rocket Classic be known
for something. What that is, I'm not quite sure yet,
but I'd like to have somehow, some way Detroit incorporated
(23:45):
in there where I don't know if you have, you
know you have the t boxes that are that are
Rocket Classic, something with something on each hole that might
represent Detroit, a car someplace, a mode town record, a
large Motown record, someplace, something that allows people when they
tune in to know right away, oh that's the Rocket Class.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
I will tell you this. The the North completely torn up,
completely torn up. They put a addition of five point
five million dollars into the corner. I cannot wait to
see what that North looks like. Yeah, it's gonna be sick.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
I got some buddies to belong there. I don't know
if everybody's super enthused about that they or not, but
the people who don't play it every day absolutely are enthused.
We're always enthused anytime we hear about Ven Johnson. Ben
Johnson is there to fight for you.
Speaker 5 (24:35):
See this ticket that I got, man, I don't need
to call Vin Johnson on this one. I don't need
to call him because he's too aggressive. He's a fire,
he's tough, he's tenacious, and for this little ticket, I
don't need him, but you you may need Van Johnson. Look,
justice it means different things to different people. Whether it's
a settlement of Verdi. Let then fight for you because

Like you ever have one of those issues where you're
you have some problems with your computer and then everything
falls apart. Like I have an automatic subscription with uh
the two Droit newspapers free pressing the news, Okay, no problem.
Every time I go to four subscribers boom, probably.
Speaker 6 (31:02):
A lot, so as you keeping them in business.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
It could be not for dollars months. I think it's
pretty important. But for some reason now, I mean, after
I rebooted my computer, nothing there can't get to the
can't get to the any of the subscribed articles. Yeah,
I wish see.
Speaker 5 (31:24):
The good thing is it's such a professional you're so
good at what you do, it won't hinder you. And
the people wouldn't have known if you didn't give them
a little insiet.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
I don't know about that. It just it kind of
drives me crazy. It's important, just because from the standpoint
of what we've talked about with and we're going to
dive into Brailan's Top eleven, which is going to be
kind of a weekly segment pause, the work will stop eleven.
We've got his Braylan's breakdown. Really excited to kind of
move this along as our show moves along too. But
(31:53):
just real quick on the Tigers. I know people were
freaking out about the nine to four loss yesterday and
the issues this team is having. They're having all kinds
of problems scoring runs, They're having all kinds of problems
of getting on base. The confidence level like covering you
in an NFL locker room, the confidence level has to
be really high. But it's always amazed me how quickly
(32:17):
you have to be so confident to get to where
you are at the professional level. It's rarefied air. It's
not just all skilled. You've told us it's a lot
of it's between the years. With the Tigers, you could
tell in June that they were walking around with a swagger. Yeah,
it's a different feel right now, not just because they'd
(32:37):
lost six of their last seven series, not just because
they're struggling to score runs and they can't get anybody
out since June first, their era from the bullpen is
over five. There's a different vibe on how they're carrying
themselves now, and they've got to find a way to
turn that clock back two months to get it where
what used to be.
Speaker 5 (32:54):
Yeah, and I wanted to say, you know, the tough
thing about when it's still new is is there's still
a lot more, you know, uncertainty. There's still a lot
more like, Ah, man, are we that good? Am I
that good?
Speaker 4 (33:06):
You know?
Speaker 5 (33:07):
Are we the team? Are we moving in the right direction?
I remember when I was with the Jets, got traded.
Excuse me, Jets have been a bad organization, you know,
been to the playoffs, losing the playoffs first round, then
not go to the playoffs. So when I get traded
there we end up going to AFC Championship that year
two thousand and nine, should have beat the coach. That's
a whole other topic that I get into at least
(33:28):
three four times a year. But coming back that year,
we do hard knocks. Now we're on hard knocks. Now
we bring in more people. Now there's more anticipation about
what we're gonna be and what we can be. But
you know, you get into this funk and you know,
in the middle of the season, let's see, we started
off nine and two, so ninety two. Then we lost
(33:48):
one and we lost another one some losses in there.
Now you're starting to question was last year real? Like
are we really that team? Like it's Rex Ryan really
that coach? You have these little games that you play
in your head when it's still new. The Tigers are
still new in this space. The Tigers won last year
at the end of the year, and they've won this
year so far. But now when you have things like
(34:09):
this in that adversity, if you're not held together by
someone like an aj Hinch that has won a World Series,
that is down in that understands the ebbs and flows
that come with one hundred and sixty two games and
the pressures and things. If you don't have that, it's
easy to get in your head and it's easy not
to get out of it in.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
So how do you get it back? How do you
steer it back on the tracks? You just I'm glad
you mentioned aj Hinch. Charlie Morton's been there before, right,
but he's relatively new this team. Labor Torres has been
there before, but he's not a one year deal. I
here by us. He's won something with the Cubs, right,
so he's been there before. Who do you turn to
(34:47):
to kind of steer it back on the track? And
at what point do young players? And I don't think
they're they're not veterans. A lot of the Tigers aren't veterans,
but they're not rookies either. They're young pros. How are
they learning to help the team get it back?
Speaker 5 (35:01):
You gotta dial it back into some fun and kind
of what like why you what's your what's your why?
When you get into these points? What's your why? Why
do I play this game? The start bear? You got
to go back to the bear? Sometimes? Why do I
play this game?
Speaker 1 (35:13):
You know?
Speaker 5 (35:13):
How we have in this season? Sometimes it's just fun.
Sometimes now they're pressing like coming into.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
This can see it?
Speaker 5 (35:19):
Hell yeah, you can see them pressing. You can see
at bats guys trying to go for the de fence.
You can see the pictures trying to place the ball
in the exact perfect spot. And I know the picture
job is to place it, but when you're trying like this,
you're missing the mark because you're trying to overly place it.
You're changing your hitting swing, you're changing your pitching most
and your mechanics and your dynamic, you're changing your coach
and stuff. Sometimes you gotta dial it all back. Rex
(35:42):
Ryan was a master at this. When we would get
into these spaces where playing bad football offense, defense, or
we just don't seem like ourselves. Sometimes it's just it's
different in football. We wouldn't even practice. We come in
and you start talking about life, and we talked about
what was going on with Crack, some jokes, you know,
and Rex would remind us that football and everything, you know,
(36:05):
it's not everything. It's important. Football isn't everything. I think
sometimes you have these reminders you decompress from what's going on.
Sometimes you're in it. You know, you can't see the
fours through the trees. Sometimes you gotta take yourself out
so you can see that thirty five thousand of you,
and I think that's what a j Hints has to
do for these Tigers. You got reminded, this is a
fun game, like what you guys get paid to do
(36:27):
is fun. Don't put all this World Series pressure on yourself.
Don't put all the pressure. So can you beat the Phillies?
Can you beat the Dodgers? Can you beat the Padres?
You got to get there first.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Yeah, it's hard not to do that. When people are reminded,
you don't even want because even even when you like
you just brought up the Jets when your team was
struggling during that time, if you start nine to two,
as you said.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
And so suddenly popped by the Patriots and then all
hell broke.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Look okay, and so suddenly you got two or three
losses and it touched the Snowbowl a little bit. You're
getting reminded. You don't need the reminder, but that's what
the doing. The fans are doing it too.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
But in that reminder, you remember that you're looking too
far ahead, like you're looking now. You know in all
right football season, you're getting beaten in early November because
you're looking at January twenty ninth, you're looking at whenever
the Super Bowl is gonna be February fourth or fifth,
you're looking at the AFC Championship game. Oh, we get
to meet up against insert Coats or Patriots again. First
(37:24):
of all, this is week eleven. This week you have
the Texans. Don't go out there and stub your toe
against the Texans. The following week you got the Buffalo Bills.
Go out there, play the Bills, study the tape on
the Bills. Relax and know that you got this, like
Riley Green, like you're a damn good hitter, your damn
good player. Relax, you can hit the ball out of
the park. We know you got this. Sometimes you got chill.
(37:46):
Don't put all that pressure on yourself. There's no pressure.
There is no pressure on you.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
You believe pressure self induced?
Speaker 5 (37:53):
Yes, self induced.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
That's why I laugh a lot of times when I
hear fancy You know they're feeling the pressure because of
this thing. Look the pressure, it's with everybody all the time.
It's just whether or not you choose to succumb to
that pressure. Right, Riley Green one for twenty one nine
punch outs in his last twenty two abs, and everyone
(38:17):
thinks it's pressure. Well, I'm sure you mentioned it. He's
probably gripping the bat a little bit tighter. He's probably
trying to do too much. Is that pressure or does
that want to Is it a combination, there's a combin
I'm sure it's a little bit of both. I can
tell you this the last thirty games, and everybody, it's
well documented you tried. At one point was up fifteen
and a half. Okay, they're now up six. We all
(38:41):
know that. I am so tired of hearing people say,
you know, they have the largest lead of any division leader.
No shit, thanks a lot. That doesn't matter. It's the
worst division in baseball. It doesn't matter that you've got
the largest lead. Okay. What does matter is how you're
playing the game more than anything else. People can stomach
losing as long as you're losing the right way, not
(39:03):
losing the way they are the last thirty games, Detroit
is twenty first in batting average. They are twenty ninth
of thirty teams in on base percentage. Only Tampa is
worse in on base percentage slugging their eighteenth strikeouts, they
are fifth. They have the fifth most strikeouts in the
(39:26):
last thirty games. The Angels or in town tomorrow Trek
Schouble might have twenty five strikeouts tomorrow night. Seattle, Tampa
and Texas are the only teams who have struck out
more than Detroit over the last thirty games or thirty days,
and that's a big problem for it.
Speaker 6 (39:44):
So what do you think about the start there? Man,
October ready not yet, I'd said at all. But they're
not ready for October at all.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
He admitted it. This is from last year.
Speaker 6 (39:55):
Yeah, that's yeah, because that's in Houston.
Speaker 5 (39:58):
That's bet me.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
He knows that. He knows that better than anybody, all right,
he would he would tell you to take that shirt off,
rip it, like Braylan ripped one of those Olk shirts
a couple of weeks ago, and say burn it. He doesn't,
he wouldn't want that because he knows this. He knows
his team's not ready yet, and the team knows it.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
I actually like hearing what. I like hearing that because
you don't want them to just wrest on the Laurels.
Oh we have the first half of the season. I'm hoping.
And everything I've seen from aj Hinch, even as comments
leading up to the trade deadline last year, he's a
guy that doesn't seem like he just rests into a place,
even if it's good for a moment.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
No cool it. I don't want to just you know,
I don't want to change the flow up to the
show and interrupt with a topic change. But who's your
favorite ninja turtle? As you're rocking a dope vintage teenage
New Ninja Turtle show Surgurday in nineteen eighty nine, if
you know you know a favorite turtle.
Speaker 6 (40:51):
Favorite turtle?
Speaker 5 (40:52):
I see you as a Leonardo guy.
Speaker 6 (40:53):
I was gonna say, Leonardo a leader. That's smooth. That
wa brother.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
My kids love those many were they were there?
Speaker 5 (41:00):
Four or four?
Speaker 6 (41:01):
Four?
Speaker 2 (41:02):
Can you guys? Or you can? You probably can? Can
you name all four?
Speaker 5 (41:07):
Leonardo, Michael Langelo, Raphael Donantella in.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
The words of my mother, is your name?
Speaker 5 (41:11):
Ricky?
Speaker 2 (41:11):
I knew you could.
Speaker 6 (41:13):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 5 (41:14):
I probably would have got three out of four. Dona
Tello was like it was always the one that it
catches people. Yeah, when you get into you Michael, Leonardo
and Rafael and the Purple Guy. Yeah purple.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
So Donna Tello is the one I knew. Oh for okay,
that's it. The tech guy tech jeans Yeah, my kids
loved him when they were little, and I remember Dona
Tella for some reason or another. It's a good picture
of Riley Green and how your bias and trek school
schoobl will pitch tomorrow again, probably twenty five strikeouts, since
La has a lot of swinging miss. If you're not
(41:47):
concerned about the lack of swinging miss for Detroit, then
you haven't paid attention. That's a problem for them moving
forward without a doubt. The fortunate thing is for the
Tigers is that they have the rest of August and September,
and granted they've got Cleveland, I think for six games
left they can either pull away or give the Guardians
a chance to come back to the pack. Detroit gets
(42:10):
the Angels, the White Sox, and the Twins again. Up
next for Cleveland is the White Sox. So this is
I'm not saying this is vital. Okay, It's funny how
we shift gears with stuff with in baseball. When Detroit
was going to Philadelphia, what did we hear? This is
a measuring stick series? Yeah, like there was no measuring
(42:30):
stick series earlier, right for the Tigers, but this is
a measuring stick because Philadelphia's. We view them as a
really good team.
Speaker 5 (42:36):
I think what happens is people keep pushing the goal
posts back because you want that to happen, like you
wanted these questions when you're asking, well, you know what,
this is the measuring stick, you know what, Let's see
how they do against the Blues as well. When you
get rocked against the Blues, Ja's well, now we got
to push the gold polls back because we didn't like
the result. Let's see how they do against the Phillies. Well,
they get rocked against the Phillies. Well, let's see how
(42:57):
they do against against their team here. So I think
that's why that goal post key's moving back because people
don't want to admit six games has people on edge.
And if the Indian excuse me, disrespectful, if the Guardians
weren't sellers, we might be having a whole different conversation.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
You never know, you never know it is. When you
said that, I thought to myself. Do athletes go into
games You're always confident, But do you go into games
as a team and say we should beat this team.
They're not any good? Okay, so you feel that, but
that doesn't mean you take it to kool Aid's point
doesn't mean you're resting on laurels. You're taking for granted, right,
(43:36):
I hope not.
Speaker 5 (43:37):
No, it's in terms of the opposite. I've been on
both sides of that coin. I've been in some games
like I know we're not gonna beat this team, but
like what like like like what I was in the
AFC North in the time of the Stillers that won
Super Bowl and went to three, the Baltimore Ravens that
(43:58):
should have won Super Bowls in the era, and we
play those games. I'm in Cleveland. I know we're gonna lose,
but I'm gonna go out there and give it all
I have. I hate that mindset though, because all it
takes is like that one player you're like yeah, and
then then you pack it in.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
You feel like you almost have to play perfect.
Speaker 5 (44:14):
You do well, you do and if you were playing
there there's that press though, there's where that pressure comes in.
You put the pressure on yourself. We gotta play perfect,
but we're not gonna beat them. Guess what, Nobody plays perfect,
even Tom Brady. So when you start that way, it's
only a matter of time before you know the mistakes
started adding up.
Speaker 2 (44:29):
But when you when you played at Michigan Northwestern was
almost a foregone conclusion.
Speaker 5 (44:35):
How many touchdowns are gonna have by halftime? That's my mindset.
Actually every team in the Big Ten, Indiana was how
many touchdowns in the first quarter?
Speaker 2 (44:43):
Right, that's right?
Speaker 5 (44:45):
Yeah, Ohio State, Iowa, Ohio State, Iowa, and Michigan State.
It was like, all right, it's gonna be tough. I'll
figure it out those other games. Don't worry about it.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
You just do your better.
Speaker 5 (44:58):
Yeah, because we were a better team and we practiced against
better players. So when we got to Saturday, I don't
care about Purdue. I don't care about I didn't even
look at the scouting reports sometimes for what, because I
know y'all can't stop Mike Hart. I know y'all can't
stop Chris Parry. I know eventually, I know eventually you're
(45:19):
gonna have to put eight in the box. And guess what,
it's game time. There's gold time.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
I remember, I remember I was doing I was doing
sidelines for Michigan football. Ron Kramer and John Wangler were
the analysts, and Michigan lost at Northwestern.
Speaker 5 (45:36):
You weren't this is waiting, Damien Anderson.
Speaker 2 (45:39):
I don't recall, to be honest with this a long
time ago. But when we got on the plane, John Wangler,
who of course played quarterback at Michigan, was beside himself,
Damian and and I said, what's what's wrong? What's going on?
He says, we don't lose to Northwestern. He said, I
never lost to Northwestern. I outscored them. I mean, he
knew the stats right away. There are certain teams that
(46:01):
it hurts a hell of a lot more, whether they're
good or not, it hurts a hell of a lot
more because there's no way you feel in your mind
you should ever bow to that team.
Speaker 5 (46:11):
I told you this, and I stand by it. You
can look it up if you guys don't believe me.
When I was in Michigan, my four years in Michigan
didn't lose to anybody except Iowa and Ohio State. Talking
about into Big Ten. That's validation that we didn't worry
about the other game they were close. Shoot, there were
a lot of Hey, we went to overtime with Penn
State my sophomore year and we beat Wisconsin at the
(46:33):
end of the game on a black field goal. Minnesota,
for some reason, when I was in Michigan took us
to the wire. They beat us by They were beating
us by twenty eight points at the start of fourth
quarter in two thousand and three and came back and won.
I just didn't view ever potentially losing to that tam
never crossed your mind. The triple overtime game. Everybody always
(46:54):
wants to bring up, and I appreciate it. At no
point that I think I was losing Michigan State. It's
Michigan State. That was my mindset when I was at Michigan,
and I think that mindset has returned back to.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
Yeah, and it needs to return if you're if you're
at Michigan State, something needs to happen. Yeah, something needs
to happen. Uh, something needs to happen. Anytime your car
gets all dirty, how do you fix it? How do

Speaker 2 (51:58):
Just a just a quick and then I want to
move to something that one of the veteran linemens said
for the Lions, I'm really excited. Yeah. Have you ever
heard of a general manager saying We've got a chance
to be a power horse organization, but we're not there yet. Na,
Have you ever heard that when somebody is in first
place and has the largest lead in the division of
any team in baseball? Do you think that's rather odd
(52:22):
to say that out loud publicly?
Speaker 5 (52:24):
What I think is, as you talked about the field
of play, you talked about the coaching is a little
bit on the down slope. Talking about the players, you
talked about the batch, you talk about the pitching staff,
you talk about all the things that are you know,
coming together to make the Tigers look sloppy, to make
the Tigers look a little bit less than they were
a couple of weeks ago. Then you get your front
(52:47):
office guy who has done, you know, a decent job
in my opinion. Now you get him coming up, and
now you get him saying something that makes you feel like,
just what is he talking about? What's going on? Like,
what is going on with this organization in this moment?
Something is going on that is we're not privy to.
(53:08):
There's something going on, maybe with a power dynamic or
maybe something. But for the GM to come out at
a time in which the players, the coaches and everything
is just just a little not clean. And now to
add to it, I don't like this energy. This is
not the type of energy that I would like at
this point when we're trying to figure because we're still
in great positions, but it just seems like it's not spiraling.
(53:32):
But you know when those tops are running and as
they start to wiggle out, it's at the start of
a wiggle.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
It's a legitimate concern when you have the president of
Baseball Ops coming out in the saying at the trade deadline,
we have quantity and you don't you avoid the word quality, okay,
and then you have them say, you know, we've got
a chance to be a power horse organization, but we're
not there yet. I don't think anybody thinks they're a
power horse organization, Okay, but I don't know if that's
a good look when you're saying it and you're teams
(54:00):
in first place and the expectation is that they're going
to challenge for a league championship. Don't tell me any
of us don't believe that's still possible. Absolutely, you don't. Okay,
So we all think that Toronto's better. We probably think
Seattle and Houston might be better. We'll soon find out
against Houston pretty soon. And they've already played them in
a series earlier this year and Houston beat them two
(54:22):
out of three. But it seems like an odd thing
to say publicly when you're trying to gain more trust
and confidence from a fan base. I don't believe you
manage things or coach things for fans. You know that,
But it seems like an odd thing to say.
Speaker 5 (54:39):
This. Seems like he's trying to put some distance between
him and the team. And I don't know if that's true,
but that's what it feels like. Say, hey, look, you know,
we'll do that down the line, but you know, they
got to figure it out now. They have to figure
it out now. Meanwhile, you are in charge of making
moves at the trade deadline. You didn't you were in
charge of some other things that you didn't do. So
it seems like he's trying to distance himself for what
(55:00):
this may turn into.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
And today's a good time for them to have a
day off. And again Schooble tomorrow, so he should be
lights out. I think they'll get right tomorrow against the
Angels this weekend. Uh, we don't have to worry about
that togetherness, I don't think with the Lions, at least
with the guy like DJ Reader, who has become more
and more of a favorite of mine. He has really
(55:23):
taken Tyler Williams under his under his wing and helped
him learn the trade, the tricks of the trade, if
you will. And now he's doing the same thing to
another high draft pick for the Lions, but on the
other side of the ball. This is what DJ Reader
had to say about Detroit's second round pick, Tate Ravage.
Speaker 12 (55:44):
Yeah, it's kind of his development of Uh, Taks can
be a good player.
Speaker 5 (55:48):
Tate. You know, he's a guy who works out.
Speaker 12 (55:50):
He's a load when it comes down on doubles. Things
like that. He's smart and another one who he's not
too down on himself. He's pretty smart. He knows what
he's doing. But he's a good player. It's fun going
back and forth with them. I try to tell him
things that he's doing good in the sets, things that
I see, you know that other these tackles might see,
just to try to help him. But you know, it's
fun going against him. It's good seeing how physical he's
(56:13):
been these last few days. And that's always fun for me.
Being old guy, you can get stacking it sometimes and
not want to be as physical, and he makes me
make sure I'm ready every day.
Speaker 2 (56:22):
Love the physicality, right, I mean, that's what they got
him for. So when a veteran is noticing that early
in camp, you know, he doesn't have to say that, right,
I don't want to read too much into it. But
a veteran doesn't have to praise young players like that,
does they?
Speaker 5 (56:35):
No, he doesn't, especially on the other side of the ball.
Excuse me, especially on the other side of the ball.
He doesn't have to give any any kudos to tay Rally.
He can just talk about himself. He could talk about
what the d Lion is doing because there's been a
lot of questions ask about that defensive line, so he
could lean into that. But the fact that he's talking
about tay Raleig just means he sees something that he likes,
Like this isn't just going out of my way to
say something to make a guy feel that it made
(56:56):
me give him some confidence. He sees that physicality tay
Rallis comes out of Joy Kirby smart man. Last time
I check you guys, remember the National Championship speech that
audio that got leaked. You know, this is what tay
Rally's comes from, man, and he is going to be
a vital player. I like the fact that he says
he's leaning into that physicality. He makes me bring my
lunch pal and my hat every day. Veterans don't like that.
(57:19):
Guys that have been in league as long as DJ reader,
I want to say this year nine for him, he's
been around. He's been in Houston, back in the day,
he was in Cincinnati. Like he is a vet that
can chill if he wants. To the fact that he's
engaging in the physicality of tatey Raalis he sees something
specially him and he's trying to bring it to the
next level as opposed to just let him do his thing.
(57:39):
And I appreciate that that's the type of guys that
it seems this culture is producing. Love that Reader.
Speaker 2 (57:46):
I freaking love DJ Reader talking about stuff like that.
I think it's just he's a pros pro is what
he is, and I think, I know that's kind of
a cliche, folks, but I mean, those are the things
that I love about this team. I think they've got
guys in the right space, whether it be Taylor Decker, Alexandzeloni,
DJ Reader, guys who are Kevin Zeitler a year ago,
(58:07):
right even Graham Glascow said David Montgomery pros pros. They
are all in for their team. Sure, do they want
to get what they think should be their Absolutely, I
don't blame them for that, but they are there to
help everybody else and do what's best for the team.
That's what I love most about this team in this
culture right now.
Speaker 5 (58:27):
The great thing about that is when players, veteran players,
when they make themselves approachable, They when they make themselves available,
when they make themselves you know, like you can go
have a conversation. This is when guys started asking questions
like when you're a young guy, you don't know what
it is You're like, I do I ask a question,
Do I say something? Do I not? You know I'm
waiting for my in This is an end. This lets
(58:48):
tate rallies know I can go to DJ Reader and
ask a question, Hey DJ on this play. You know
I'm saying I was coming off the inside of your hip,
but I noticed you. How did you get me? How
would you able to keep me stout with the two hands?
Speaker 1 (58:57):
You know?
Speaker 5 (58:58):
What is this? Ask questions? You create a conducive environment
for asking questions. How many questions do you think Jamison
Williams has asked, I'm alrighty Saint Brown the last three years?
Speaker 2 (59:07):
Now, how many questions?
Speaker 5 (59:09):
Well exactly, And That's what I'm thinking as well, Terry
and Arnold. How many questions he asking his secondary leaders?
You know Jack Campbell when he first got here, he
was asking a ton of questions to Alex AZELONEI. So
I think that's how you get better when guys aren't
afraid to talk to you about the game and self
and progressing and the knowledge. So you get better and
you get a team of guys that are just hey, man,
look let me help you on this, or let me
(59:30):
help you with this, you know, grab your lunch and
as opposed to going over here with you. Using grab
your lunch and come in. We'll watch a little film
and I'll tell you some things. I'll show you what
I learned from learning Tuntu, what I learned from other
offensive linemen that are elite that I've played with. Then
you start to get these conversations, man. And you know,
when we get to the Bralens eleven, which I can't
wait to do, I played with a lot of guys
(59:52):
and I watched those guys give information to guys that
are playing about elite stuff.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
Man. I absolutely adore that when you were going up
against corners, how would like how would corners help? I'm
on Rofe Saint Brown, Jamison Williams, and Isaac Tesslau right now,
Like you're not just asking the wide receivers, right, You're
asking the guys who are covering you with and then
they have to give some of their knowledge without giving
away too many secrets.
Speaker 5 (01:00:16):
The biggest thing is tendencies. Asking these guys, what tendencies
do you see out of me? When I'm talking to
Darrel Reeves and we're doing one on ones each day,
and we're doing seven on seven and we're doing team
you know, at the end of or during practice. Hey, look,
you know what I'm saying. You kind of jumped that
comeback route on me, Like what did you see? Well,
you know what I'm saying. I know you start raising
up a little bit towards the route, so I knew
you weren't going to go all the way down the field.
(01:00:37):
So I know you. I know your favorite route is
the comeback route. I'm pretty sure you're probably gonna run
a comeback on that. Duly noted I'm doing too much
at the top of round. I'm coming up like this.
He knows that I'm gonna break on this ay crow
at the line of scrimmage. How did you get your
hands on me so fast? How did you wait and
still be able to get my hands? Like, well, I
know sometimes you give this little bs move dot do
(01:00:57):
and then I just waited for it, and then I
put my hands and then you struggled a little bit.
Antonio Carmarti. So just asking those questions and they make
you a better player. They make you stop the tendencies,
because that's how guys get a hit. They study film.
People are studying film to study the tendencies. What is
the tendencies of an offensive coordinator. What are the tendencies
(01:01:18):
of a quarterback in third down?
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
What are the.
Speaker 5 (01:01:19):
Tendencies of a wide receiver where I know he's getting
the ball? That's the other thing. So tendencies are what
experienced players can help you get rid of.
Speaker 2 (01:01:29):
It's got to be a fine line though, between Let's
say you're helping a young corner. All right, you don't
want to give away too many of your secrets because
you may play against that corner someday, which you probably did,
you know, in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (01:01:43):
At the end of the day, it is what it is. Like,
I told you what I saw and to help you,
but I'm still watching. I'm still observing, and what I
told you when I showed you, I got something else
in the tank. You know, I have other information that
I can use to go against you. So I'm not
tripping help a guy. I'm not going to not help
a guy all the way because of having to play
them later. When I play them later, I got to
(01:02:04):
strap my chance, trap themone and be ready for what
they've learned and what they might be able to do.
So now I give it up.
Speaker 2 (01:02:10):
Yeah, that's cool. That's really cool. Detroit to Besides a
guy like DJ reader Zadarius Smith has been in the news.
Brad Holmes has come out publicly and said, look, we
still have conversations with him and his team, and rightfully so.
I think I've never wavered from this. I've said this
for a while now. I think he's going to be lyon.
Speaker 5 (01:02:32):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
I don't think there's any question. And I think part
of the reason one of the big reasons why Detroit
didn't go out and get one of those big name
free agent defensive ends or look into possibly trading for
one of those defensive ends is because this has been
in the back pocket for a while. If he's available
(01:02:54):
and people know that he is, he's a good player.
He's not making the Pro Bowl, but he's a good player.
That would have been done by now. Don't you think
we gotta read the tea leaves here. He's coming back.
Speaker 5 (01:03:08):
He'll definitely be done. Excuse me, He's definitely coming back.
I knew this the whole time. I thought this the
whole time. At the end of the day, they worked
out whatever it was. I guarantee the conversation with something
like this. I want to be a Detroit Lion. I
am not trying to practice in training camp. I know
he's a veteran player. This is a year eleven for him.
Speaker 10 (01:03:27):
Me.
Speaker 5 (01:03:27):
I don't want to be in training camp. I don't
want to necessarily come to training camp. I don't know
if those were the words exactly, but it's the waiting process.
He's been ten training camps, ten seasons. Like's not He's
not going to be the sole guy. He's not coming
in here to rack up fifteen and a half sacks, right,
He's coming here to do what he does. I will
give you six sacks. Everywhere he's gone, he will find
a way to get you six sacks. He is enjoying
(01:03:48):
the rest of his summer. He's probably out somewhere with
cash down now shout the cast out Detroit three and three.
You know what it is. They probably just enjoying the summer.
He's downing in and when they call his number, he'll
be ready. He'll sign for a very favorable.
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
When would that be? Do you think? When could you
envision him coming before the final preseason game? After this week?
Or I mean, how much time will a veteran need
to get reacclimated? Week A week from Monday, A week
from Monday, a week from this Monday. That's the prediction.
Speaker 5 (01:04:19):
Yeah, no later, No later week from Monday.
Speaker 2 (01:04:23):
Because it's later than a week from Monday, we should
be somewhat concerned.
Speaker 5 (01:04:27):
Not necessarily concern, but concerned about what type of shape
that he's going to be in when the season starts,
because he's still going to sign here, but it's more
so about the shape. I think he signs a week
from Monday still gives him two and a half weeks
to get it. He's working out now. Yeah, there's a
big difference between working out at your local planning business
or working out on the field at your local high school,
(01:04:48):
or if you went to Michigan and you're up the
street you're working out at Chimbercklahall. There's a difference between
that and being on the practice field with a schedule
with helmets, going after your guys, getting fatigued, getting tired,
getting coach, and dealing with a that getting frustrated, getting annoyed.
There's a difference in that and just the rhythm that
is football, which is a sport I play. It is
a rhythm to that and it takes a second to
(01:05:09):
get into that.
Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
Okay, Well, if there are guys who are in camp
now sweating it out. Some of them Marcus Davenport, for example,
although he's coming off an injury, so it's maybe not
necessarily the same, but and they're veterans and they've been
going through this. If Taylor Decker can go through this,
why can't Zadarias Smith? How do you walk that line
(01:05:30):
of keeping the respect of the guys who actually have
gone through camp during these hot summer days and you
kind of chilling and relaxing until the time is right
for you.
Speaker 5 (01:05:39):
Those dudes are on contracts and he's not. But then
you always tell them say, well, you're on contract. I
expect you to live out your contract. Those guys are
on contract. He currently has no contract also too, it's
not that big deal for a defensive end Russian whose
job is to see quarterback hit quarterback. Do you remember
in twenty twenty twenty three we signed Bruce Irvin, Yes,
(01:06:04):
who I played with in Seattle. I was there when
he got drafted. We signed Bruce Irvin.
Speaker 6 (01:06:07):
The Derek Carr game.
Speaker 5 (01:06:09):
That would be interesting as a trivia question because people
will know that he was the first round draft of
the year Russell got drafted. But anyway, we signed him
on like a Friday. Guess what he had in the game,
didn't even play, had a sack, had a very crucial sack,
and he hadn't played in two years. So it's not
necessarily extremely hard, no disrespect to the game, it's not
(01:06:32):
extremely hard for Russian to come in late and just
go out there and get a sack.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Especially a situational guy. He's gonna be a situation right, Like,
he's not going to be in there on down after
down after down. He's probably strictly a third down Russian
type of guy to start.
Speaker 5 (01:06:49):
If he's in there down after down after down, then
that press conference that we saw out of Marcus Davenport,
then I was right. If he's in there down after
down that Marcus it rubbed me the wrong way, then
we will be right.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
If he's down there or there there's an injury.
Speaker 5 (01:07:06):
I didn't want to say that sin, that's sin in Detroit, but.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
That's what we're looking at. How much do you think
that will calm the anxiety of many Lions fans today?
Speaker 5 (01:07:18):
Probably none, realistically. I think where you're at is where
you're at, Like, unless they signed Trey Hendrickson or trade
for me, excuse me, my father, let's say trade or
somebody like that. Outside of that, Oh, I mean, well
he wasn't that good for us last year? Like once
again moving the gold polls back. We want Zadarius Smith.
Why didn't he sign? He signs? I mean he was
(01:07:38):
just okay last year?
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
You know, yeah, I thought he was I thought he
was good last year. He's probably better with everybody's going
to be better with a guy like Aiden Hutchinson. I mean,
Zadaria Smith put up really good numbers. It helps to
have Miles Garrett on the other edge, right, But bringing
in another guy who feels like this team it's much
(01:08:00):
like DJ Reader has said, it feels like this team
can win a Super Bowl. I think that's I think
that's a huge benefit for this team. And he's already
been in that locker room. He already knows Kelvin Shepard
the new defensive coordinator. He's got a good understanding of
what he thinks the defense is going to be. It
wouldn't surprise me if they're in pretty regular communication right now.
Speaker 5 (01:08:21):
Yeah, cooler getting on this one too. I know that
people want to hear from you. Look, do you remember
the Houston Texas game. Last year we bring into Darius Smith.
Dan camb will say, you know what, because you didn't
get a bye week, we'll let you take this game off.
Ye really could have used him in that game. We
end up winning the game. It came back. But do
you remember Zadarius Smith was coaching the whole game.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
Yeah, he was coaching up.
Speaker 5 (01:08:45):
The players the whole game. This is less than a
week and being a Detroit Lion and I'm not even
dressed to play. It goes back to the conversation you
were just talking about that. Shep was talking about bringing
guys in that wants to help other guys on their
team become better at their craft. And I love that
about him. You can say what you want to say,
I don't understand what's going on, blah blah blah, but
(01:09:07):
he is a guy that was giving his information how they.
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
One, but how the coaching staff handled it too right
and let him. They understand what it was like to
play Aaron Glenn At the time, Dan Campbell are like,
you know what, You're a veteran. That was your bye week.
You were looking forward to it. You wanted to do
something with your family. We want you to know you
you bring value here. Eric, it's the right it's the
(01:09:31):
right thing to do for the player.
Speaker 5 (01:09:33):
Eric Man, Jeanie wouldn't have done that. Yeah, you know,
a bunch of coaches I had, they would not have
done that. But as a former player, you know, you
understand it a little differently. You know, if you didn't play,
you're like, no, I gotta have him now, he say
for him, he plays now, he gets implemented in the system.
The more reps blah blah blah. When you played the game,
it's like he's a specific, specific pass rusher. He adn't
(01:09:55):
got to play this week.
Speaker 6 (01:09:56):
And I wonder how much that stuff does go to
boost a veteran kind of towards the end of the career,
still a good player, But I do wonder how much
has stuff boosted, Because you're right, as soon as he
got here, he didn't spend nothing but a few hours
and already went on a full PR tour to back
up the Lions, to back up the coaching, to back
up the way that this organization does business now, not
just on the field, but how all the things that
(01:10:19):
they changed to get the right people here. Shout out
to Spilman and Disner shout out to Sheila at rod Wood,
and I know I'm probably forgetting people, you know, Brad
and Dan. He said that everything is different here, and
it's so weird hearing that because for years it seemed
like it was a plague. Nobody wanted to come to
Detroit because even us as fans, we knew our organization
is not really handling things the right way. South to
(01:10:40):
Child believes in the million Man March. But with za
Darius Smith, I'm more comfortable with believing that he's going
to be back here as this thing continues to play out,
especially with Brad Holmes, who was stepped to the podium
and talked about it.
Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Toonder if he would have even contemplated coming back at
Detroit not treated him the way they did. I think
there's just the right way to treat people in a
wrong way, and you didn't necessarily have to do it,
But I think because they did do it, I think
it goes a long way with him.
Speaker 5 (01:11:10):
Yeah, very true. It's also something to be able to
play against your former team that didn't want to pay
you twice talking about the Green Bay Packers, whereas Darius
Smith had the best part of his career and then
also too, last time I checked, Detroit Lions are one
of the best teams in the league and have one
of those chances to get to the dance, and you
were already there. I'd say nice things about Detroit. Yeah,
(01:11:30):
and I would say nice things even if they didn't
treat me right, because it's Detroit. They're moving in the
right direction. I want to be a part of a winner,
so you mix all those things in. He did it
directly refreshing.
Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Is it really refreshing when you hear that your organization
is doing things the right way and players about that.
Speaker 6 (01:11:48):
You know that stuff gets to be fired up, man,
because for so many years that's all we wanted this
organization to do. And you know what, I also wonder
with the Zadarius Smith and SHP, I do wonder. I
do wonder how much of the makeup of this team
makes it a pleasure for him too, because Dan Campbell
talked about that. We even have the audio two where
they asked him the question, with all this change to coordinators,
(01:12:10):
how happy are you that this team is top heavy?
He talked about that identity and the character these guys
and how they go And I'm wondering what is the
Darius Smith able to come here. In contrast to Brailin
trying to coach people up on the sidelines, we saw
receptiveness on the Detroit Lions sidelines, further punctuating in my opinion,
this team is doing things right. It's not just the messages.
When they put brit on the hat, we now know
(01:12:31):
that these guys have bought completely in. If for gotle
like Darius Smith can come in off the street, be
treated well, coach these guys up, be into the game,
and you see them as receptive too.
Speaker 2 (01:12:41):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (01:12:42):
I appreciate when you were naming all the guys in
the front office. They're doing a good job. I appreciate
that you didn't name Ernie and Cozy. He's throwing that
out there.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
Yeah. Same.
Speaker 5 (01:12:51):
The only remnant here.
Speaker 2 (01:12:53):
The grid thing is is a good one. It's a
marketing to them. I mean that's what it is. I mean,
it's it's put grit, I sell them habit.
Speaker 6 (01:13:02):
I think it's I think it's.
Speaker 2 (01:13:04):
Great, don't get me wrong. I think it's who they are.
But it's become almost passe now because we use it
so frequently. But I do think it's appropriate. It's not
that I don't. I just I think we use it
pretty regularly with this team, and I'm I'm hoping this
team carries that over without a doubt. By the way,
you mentioned he played for Green Bay, he also played
for Minnesota, So you get a chance to get those
(01:13:25):
two teams a couple of times like that. And I
believe they play Cleveland this year, do they not?
Speaker 5 (01:13:30):
And that's the other thing too, when you when you
leave a franchise like Cleveland, which I know about. You know,
it's no disrespect to Cleveland, but when things aren't going right,
when things aren't run a certain way, when things are
like it is in Cleveland, whatever you perceive Cleveland to be, Ladies, Jimmy,
you'll probably be right about you know what it is
when you leave that and you get a chance to
go to an organization which is crazy. It's the Lions
(01:13:52):
that do it right now, and you see things done
the right way, You're like, oh, man, whatever I need
to do to be here. This is Davegomery when he
came in from Chicago. Chicago when he was there was
a bleap shop and it's still is not out of
the woods, you know, realistically speaking, you get here and
you see how things are running. Man, What do y'all
(01:14:13):
need for me? What do you need? How can I
be a part of this? What do I need to do?
You also take a little bit more disrespect and less
money because things are done the right way.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
Not to put a downer on this whole Lion's love fest,
because I'm the one who started it, but I would
say there is a slight message coming out of Justin
Rogers does a really good job covering the Lions and
has for a long long time. But on his website
he's suggested there is a larger adjustment with John Morton
(01:14:47):
at the helm of the offense than there was before,
knowing that you know, we're not inside those walls. But
how much do we read into that and how much
should we kind of just blow it off as early
camp situations that happen off of now.
Speaker 5 (01:15:05):
You and I are on different sides as it relates
to coordinators mattering and the people that left and things
of that nature. You're on the side that you know
everything will be fine. This team is good, team is
best offense. It's been the best talent that they've ever had.
Johnny mo blah blah blah. That's now where I'm at.
I'm on the other side. I'm on the side of
where we will see. I believe that this is a
good team, but I don't know what the response will
(01:15:27):
be to Johnny Mo Kelvin sheperd. I believe I know
what the response is going to be. I don't know
on this side of the ball. I'm so convinced with
one and not the other, because one legitimately is an
Aaron Glenn clone in terms of approach to the game,
in terms of temperament, in terms of how he talks
to players, in terms of what he sees, in terms
(01:15:48):
of how he wants to do things. He studied under
Aaron Glenn. He played with Dan he also played this game,
and I talked to him. I can see how he
sees things, like I believe in Kelvin, and I believe
in what he can do with what Aaron Glynn started
here with Johnny Mo. I don't know. Offense is a
different thing. Like I think people are so dismissive of
(01:16:10):
what Ben Johnson did here. I understand you don't like him.
I understand he left. I understand that he sabotaged you
by starting Dave Montgomery. I will never let that go.
I will never let that go. I understand all of
the stuff. I understand it, but I understand that what
he did in the last two and a half years
in the offensive coordinator, he arguably was the best coordinator
in the NFL. You cannot understate that. So you cannot say,
(01:16:31):
in one breath, man, this guy turned this team around,
broke all type of NFL records with this current roster.
I give you he did all these things and brought
you to this place that people are talking about you to. Yeah,
they'll be fine with Johnny Morton because he was here
in twenty twenty two when they were kind of putting
things in. It ain't that easy. I've been in this league.
I've seen coordinators that were bought from within or had
(01:16:56):
a little bit of relevance to what the situation was,
and it didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
Yeah, it's not that I don't think he was important
by any stretch. I thought he was ingenuitive. I thought
he was a key part of it. I just say
what my comment was, I would worry. I'm worried more
about losing rag Now and Kevin Zeitler than I was
Ben Johnson. It's not that I don't think he was important.
It's not that I don't think that he was relevant
(01:17:20):
and that the team thrived. I mean it's not just
you know, franchise records. They set some NFL records with him.
I think he's fantastic. I'm not holding it against him
that he went to Chicago. I said two years ago,
I thought Chicago was the perfect fit for him. I
didn't blame him for turning down Carolina. Chicago makes a
ton of sense because they got a good running back,
they got good rug receivers, they got a franchise back.
Speaker 5 (01:17:41):
I was talking about the fan base, my impoty.
Speaker 2 (01:17:43):
Yeah, yeah, no, No, it's okay. I don't I don't
fret over that. I just think with John Morton, with
the players, the talent that he has, maybe I'm making
too much of it. The talent on the offensive side
of the ball is so strong that he's gotta really
not know what the hell he's doing in order to
screw it up.
Speaker 5 (01:18:03):
Let me ask you this question two thousand. I'm always
go back to this because it's it's a it's a
comparable example. Okay, Philadelphia Egos had the same talent to Dad.
They went to the super Bowl, they losing Patrick Mahomes.
Jalen Hurts outplays Patrick Mahomes, Right, Andy Reid, that's different.
(01:18:24):
They come back that nature. They had the same talent.
They didn't have Saan Steichen, but they had the same
talent and they looked completely different. Running back is I
will say that the running back Miles Sanders goes to Carolina,
so I understand that. And then they bring in Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
But that's a big deal. Yeah, that was a big deal.
But you're right. But no, I'm not dismissing that at all.
I think there's going to be an adjustment period. I
don't think they're coming out of the gate averaging thirty
three points per game, all right. I think there's going
to be an adjustment period. I just think they're gonna
be able to They're gonna be able to find that
happy medium. I don't care if he's calling place from
the top or on the on the field. You would
(01:18:58):
know that better than I would. I just think is
going to be. They're gonna find a happy medium, and
I think this team's gonna click off.
Speaker 5 (01:19:04):
I agree, and I think it happens late. I've said that,
I think the Lions that well, I don't want to
say it too early. We'll talk about, you know, what
our predictions are as we get close to the season.
That's always fun. Who's gonna do what? My biggest thing
is I think for me, how Jered Golf looked last
game and now you bring in Johnny Moe. That's why
I'm more skeptical of what this offense is. Look like,
(01:19:25):
Jared Golf didn't go out there and throw four interceptions
and have five turnovers and he played well and they lost.
All right, Well, Jared Golf is boom boom boom. He's fine,
he's been here, it's cool. He knows Johnny mo The
system will be fine. Jared Goff played like that. And
now you're telling me you got this new offensive coordinator
and you're trying to relate it to what he was
here in twenty two and he knows some things. I
got more questions. I'm more skeptical about it going back
to what it was last year.
Speaker 2 (01:19:46):
Fair enough, it does correct me if I'm wrong here.
I think it does help that he knows the personnel. Yeah,
he knows how to thou And I've probably given too
much credence to the fact that he was pretty good
for then last year. Yeah, his role on that offense.
How much was him? How much was Sean Payton. I
don't know the answer to that. But he's not dressing
(01:20:08):
there just to model coaches apparel, So there's some type
of gift there now. But there is some concern based
on what Justin Rodgers is reporting that the adjustment has
not been as smoothly as you would think. How much
should we be concerned about that?
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
It takes a second too, I mean, I know, you know,
I know they've been in camp now two and a
half weeks. It still takes some time. Defense is gonna
be easy because they're comparing it against the defense. They're
comparing against the competition and the levels and how a
defense looked versus how the offense look. Defense always looks
better than the offense. In the first part of training camp,
you got a new coach, you've got a couple of
(01:20:47):
new players, you have new offensive line. You're implementing timing,
you're implementing this, the snap, the quarterback center exchange. How
fast is that? How fast I was the difference in
what it was last year? You know, it takes a second,
and then people will get frustrated when people don't get
things right away. I mean, you know how a mim
Ron Saint Brown is frustrated. I mind, Ron Saint Brown
is an All Pro wide receiver two years in the road.
(01:21:08):
Is operating or has been used to operating in an
easy space. Now it's difficult. Now the pass isn't coming
out right away. Now there's this, So it takes a
second to get through the frustrations, the minutia of new chemistry,
a new nucleus. I want to see what that conversation is,
you know, next Monday, and she was not this coming Monday,
(01:21:30):
the following Monday. What does it look like then? What
conversations are we having. I'm telling you offense is a
struggle in the beginning of camp. It just all ways is.
I don't care if you guys have been practicing all
off season and running outs out in LA and doing
the things and going to dinners, and it's just a struggle.
Speaker 2 (01:21:46):
Sometimes it's a Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 5 (01:21:49):
Yeah, Yeah, that was what I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (01:21:51):
Dank Campbell talked about that last year too, when it
was spot on. He said, look, guys, about week five
or six, all offense is going to hit his stride.
This is just what it takes further backing up what
you're saying. And then it was funny though even before
that you look at what the Detroit Lions did up
to that point. They were still putting points up on people,
but when they hit their stride, there was nobody that
can stop them, even to the point that I think
(01:22:12):
it was a governor Chris Christie himself who called the
Detroit Lions classless for running it up on the Dallas Cowboys.
And I don't blame them. You can't leave them, No,
you're no, no, no, I don't blame Dan Campbell running it.
Speaker 2 (01:22:26):
Up like like I care with.
Speaker 6 (01:22:29):
The last time it was close, it cost them up.
Speaker 2 (01:22:32):
I do not care. Stop me, stop Stop all adults.
Speaker 5 (01:22:38):
Politicians stay out of politics sports, stay out of sports.
Didn't you didn't you tell Lebron James and shut up
and driven We'll do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (01:22:45):
That wasn't a politician. That was a stupid person in
front of camera.
Speaker 5 (01:22:47):
But what I'm saying is it was it was first
of all, as facts as a politician.
Speaker 2 (01:22:51):
In my book, well they're all politicians politician MSNB exactly.
Speaker 5 (01:22:56):
So my thing is worry about where about legilation in law.
Speaker 3 (01:22:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:23:00):
Amen, and just because your butt hurt because your cowboys
got roasted, you know, keep it to yourself.
Speaker 5 (01:23:05):
All of them. What happened with it? What happened with
the Cincinnati banngal? Was it the mayor? Remember the mayor
went after the chiefs? Oh yeah, burroughhead Man Bengals went
out there and got waxed. Shut up, shut up.
Speaker 2 (01:23:17):
I don't even think they're pronouncing it properly. Anyway. Listen,
when we come back, Braylan's top eleven some of the
best players he's had at certain positions, played against, played with.

Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Buddy, Are you kidding me?
Speaker 11 (01:27:48):
You do?
Speaker 2 (01:27:49):
You always want me to talk about food? And then
I get really hungry. And then Ricky looks at me,
cross eyed and says, I'm hungry too.
Speaker 6 (01:27:56):
Always we got to talk to the people in the back.
Do you get Buddies Pizza on this show? Chef desires it?
Speaker 2 (01:28:02):
Hold on a second, is in the words of Bob Seger,
I've known that for ten years. I've been asking you.
I've been asking you for that since I've been on
the show. And I still don't see a box of
Buddies Pizza here. I mean Buddy's Pizza right now. They've
got it all for you. They've got the new Barbecue
Brisket Pizza, They've got the barbecue chicken Salad, they've got
(01:28:22):
refreshing Buddy brew in Summer Shandy, and they've got the
super Summer Sunday That's what Ricky would go for first
and foremost. He would bypass the pizza, forget the beer.
It would be all over that summer Sunday, all at
your neighborhood Buddies or at Buddiespizza dot Com. Don't forget
Buddies is more than just pizza too. Their new smash
(01:28:43):
stacks that'll make you hungry and Burger's done in Detroit style,
square slice, smash stack, full flavor. You want it, They've
got it only at Buddies Buddiespizza dot Com. I'm hungry, hey,
and we built it. Always be good, done it. It
all looks really really good. Let's get to the brailn
eleven fired up about this a lot of times. What
(01:29:04):
we're gonna do is we've got the Braylan breakdown. And
it makes a lot of sense because he's able to
grasp some things that have been done at practice and
then show you why they may have been successful or
why they may have not been successful. Don't know if
we'll have time for that today, may have time for
that tomorrow as we get you ready for the Lines
and the Falcons. In preseason game number two for Detroit,
(01:29:26):
number one for Atlantis, who would expect Detroit's offense to
be ahead a little bit. But we've got Braillen's eleven here.
Explain the concept of Braylan's eleven for the folks.
Speaker 5 (01:29:35):
At all, you know, always having conversation. Everybody's doing these
lists nowadays. The best you know, all time Lions team,
all time Packers team, the best NFC team all the time.
So I'm like, you know, we look at some of
these guys I play with, you know, who's still on
the show. He mintioned some people. You know, it's a
lot of gold jackets I played with. So I thought
it would be interesting who will be the starting offense
(01:29:56):
of players that I play with, starting defense, et cetera.
We'll start with offense today. Excited about this list? Here
we go. Let's get it rock and roll? Did we
Now we're doing this individual We're just gonna put it
up like this and I just talk about them.
Speaker 6 (01:30:09):
Yeah, we can put it up on the back wall.
Speaker 5 (01:30:11):
I'll reveal it when you say, so, all right, what
do you say what?
Speaker 6 (01:30:15):
I'll reveal it when you say, so, oh, okay, I.
Speaker 5 (01:30:17):
Got you uh oh, you got individual players too.
Speaker 6 (01:30:22):
Oh no, no, I'm saying I'm gonna put the back
wall up when you're ready.
Speaker 5 (01:30:26):
Now, let's get this thing on WROP back all up
now and alledge. Just to explain how I got to
what I got to now wide receiver. It was easy.
I had to put myself in there. Duh number two.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
And this is to this with the Seattle uniform. That's interesting,
it is, you.
Speaker 5 (01:30:43):
Know, But you got the jets up there at the
very top. So I'm not mad.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
I'm just wondering where you made your mark. Do you
think it was the Cleveland Browns the.
Speaker 5 (01:30:51):
Back to back AFC championship games? Like it's one easy
all right, here we go graylan boom me and may
we may not have seen. I know he was from
one D city. I was from the other. He always
we always argued about what the D city was. First
of all, was Detroit. There is no such thing as
another DC. It's Detroit. The D is Detroit, it ain't Dallas.
(01:31:16):
But with that being said, Michael Crabtree, you know you
can't negate the hands. The man has some amazing hands.
So he did in college at Texas. And the two
bullet in the costs so two is better than one.
So he got me there. I take Michael Crabtree O
the other side, s Antonio Holmes, my teammate with the Jets,
Super Bowl MVP, one of the most underrated Super Bowls ever,
(01:31:36):
the Cardinals and the Steelers. He was the MVP of
that you know that drive. I actually hosted him at
Michigan and obviously he chose to go to the other school.
So I think that's the trio. This is the only
position that there's no like yellow Jackets, or there's no
elitey lead eleage like we were good, but you know,
no gold Jackets.
Speaker 2 (01:31:57):
Was there anybody in there who's the runner up that
you or was this a slam dunkne ont intendent?
Speaker 5 (01:32:02):
So I got a runner up too also too. I
just liked the trio. I think crab Tree is a
six to one receiver. He does some things and slot
on the outside as well as Antonio speedier guy, clutch guy,
if you will myself, it's a good trio. Sidney Rice
would have been runner up. Golden Tate, Yes, would have
been running up. I debated on Golden Tate. I'm not
(01:32:25):
putting Golden above Craft or Antonio home so Golden would
have been waiting in the wings.
Speaker 11 (01:32:31):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:32:31):
Antonio O'Brien was another one, another bulleting the cough went
out of pit. He was he was a beast. We
had the same agent saying he's a funny dude too.
So those were the runner ups at the wide receiver position.
But this is the trio that we got.
Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
Yeah. I like it because you get the big body
receiver in you and which which would have been the
last name you just mentioned, by the way, crab Tree
a little bit smaller, but you know, runs the bright places,
it makes big plays, And you're right. I think Golden
Tate with Detroit better than he was in Seattle. I agree,
And then sant Santonio Holmes with the speed aspect of it.
So I like how you covered all parts of it,
(01:33:07):
and then you gave us the runners up the guys
you thought about throwing in there, which makes us all realize,
you know what those three are. Obviously.
Speaker 5 (01:33:16):
I think Golden Tate was better than in Detroit because
Percy Harvin tuned him up in Seattle, so he had
to fix his Okay, he had to fix that's good.
Speaker 2 (01:33:24):
It helped to have the guy throwing it to him too.
Speaker 5 (01:33:26):
This is true, all right, tight end? Yeah, Vernon Davis
look no further four to three tight end came out
in Maryland. You remember the infamous Mike singletary that practice did,
or if you don't remember that, you remember him crying
after he caught that catch to catch the touchdown against
the Saints. I was in that game. I was like,
I know you're not crying, but he was a monster.
He was a beast, and I believe if Vernon would
(01:33:47):
have got to a different team, different quarterback, different sister,
Vernon could be you know, different conversations about Hall of Fame,
et cetera.
Speaker 2 (01:33:56):
Yeah, I think he's really underrated at the time, under
you think he was. He was a guy who created
all kinds of matchup problems because of his speed at
his site and great hands.
Speaker 5 (01:34:07):
Four to three at get this sixty three and a
half two forty eight, four to three insane runner up
at that position. Probably when Keller Winslow Junior I played
with with the Cleveland Browns. Uh, he would have been amazing.
If he didn't injure his knee, Vernon wins That knocks
it out.
Speaker 2 (01:34:23):
That makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 5 (01:34:24):
Yeah, here we go, let's get it offensive line. I
know a lot of people aren't excited about. Well, yeah
you are because your Lions and it is the best union.
Used to be left tackle. Not even hard at all,
not even hard at all. You talking about a guy
that made the Pro Bowl every single year he was in,
which was thirteen years in the row, never made a
playoff game, but didn't give up sacks like Joe Thomas,
(01:34:46):
had great footwork. He's an undersized left tackle now he's
only going about to eighty one. That he had to
fight to be two ninety two, ninety five, et cetera.
Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
So don't even recognize him today. He's so thin.
Speaker 5 (01:34:59):
He's a tight end. He can play the tight end spot.
Now for a honorable mentioned, here's one Russell o'coone Seattle Seahawks,
got a lot of money in Oklahoma state, won a
Super Bowl. This damn good player.
Speaker 13 (01:35:13):
And also the Brickershaw Ferguson good one from the Jets,
the Brickersaft Ferguson.
Speaker 5 (01:35:17):
Those are two really good runner up to give me
the spot. There is no runner up at the left
guard spot. Man should be in Canton two Super Bowl championships.
He was just a monster in the physical presence. I
literally watched him lift guys up laughing He's an old
school guy. And that's Alan Fannica. You probably know what
the Pittsburgh Stiller. Yes, Alan Fanica like left Guard, no
(01:35:37):
runner up Nick Man. He was a monster. He was
a legit monster. Like if I was on the opposite side,
I've been scared of him. Didn't talk a lot, big dude,
hit neck like this, Berlin, what's going on? He catch
the ball seventeen? No problem? Absolutely, I'm sorry. He's one
(01:35:59):
of those dudes like you drop a past You're like, shoot,
I gotta see Alan in the huddle like Braylan staying no, no, no,
I'm come to Siland I would see Alan after the
player catch the ball, No problem, absolutely, Snos Well you
already know he's he got the handlebar mustache. Like Holgan
(01:36:20):
in the eighties it was you still got still rocket
right there with the Cardinals. Fan is an old school player.
Old school center center was center was interesting. I had
some good centers, you know. Uh, Max Unger was Max
Ounger was really good with the Saints as well as
the Seattle Seahawks. Jonathan Goodwin, University of Michigan. My guy
(01:36:43):
Alex Mack is the runner up. Alex Mack sixth timey,
look at you. Six time Pro bowler, got to the
to the dance with the Falcons in the twenty eighty
three game. But he just was a monster everywhere he was.
And three Pro Bowls with different teams. He made seven
in total, but he made it with three different teams.
Speaker 2 (01:37:02):
That's impressive.
Speaker 5 (01:37:03):
Nick Mangol like he was him, Nick Mango, seven Pro
Bowls in the row, all Pro three times. I wanted
to say, he was just a consonant. He was a
console on a great offensive line. He was the guy.
Yeah he went to that other school.
Speaker 2 (01:37:18):
But just just said, it's tough for you to say that,
but he went to the other school. But respect, give
you credit. Respect you did it with Antonio Holmes. You've
done with Nick Mangold. Mangold was he was one of
those leaders, wasn't he?
Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:37:29):
He was, He absolutely was. He loves his uh shoot,
what is it mcallum. He's a mcallum guy. Yeah, macallum
knights and sticks, and you know it was. I got
invited once. I didn't get invited back. Too many Michigan jokes,
too many Michigan jokes. But Nick Mangole was a master.
His sister Monster shot like no, I know she is
(01:37:53):
disrespect bigger and swollen than Nick Mango, especially now she
was ever put out of How well play Team USA
Go Usa was something? Right guard is sneaky. Mike au
Potty for the forty nine ers and the Seattle He
started at left guard and then since you started right guard,
(01:38:14):
moved left guard. But Mike, another five time Pro Bowl Mike,
Mike you Patty was a beast, super nice guy, and
he loved the kava as they drink the kava kabla
like is it's it's kind of like drinking alcohol, but
then the problem is like, well not the problem, but
then the thing is it goes away like after the
thirty minutes, so it's kind of like smoking, if you will.
(01:38:36):
A small school guy, right, he's iao, look at you
doing your research, Mike you Potty. You guys should know
the right tackle, like I love you should you know
the right tackle. Spend some time in Detroit after winning
Super Bowls with the Patriots. A lot of people here
in Detroit didn't didn't like that. But hell of a player,
I called him on the tail end of his career,
but I remember what he was. And he played for
(01:38:57):
the Patriots and I remember what he was when he
was healthy, when he first got to Detroit. Definitely the
right tack. You're talking about the leader, same thing you
see on those four letters. It's the same how he
was as a player. He is a guy who's gonna
get the best out of you. He is not accepting bs.
He may not practice much, but he knows how to get.
Speaker 2 (01:39:15):
He's a down to earth guy too. What I remember
in covering.
Speaker 5 (01:39:18):
Him Detroit, super super super super cool guy. So now
we've got the wide receivers, we have an offensive line.
Let's dive into the quarterback position. Now you know that
I did not play with a lot of quarterbacks. The
Cleveland quarterbacks. You got Derrick Anderson. No, I love Brady Quinn.
He'll be on the show next Monday. No, Trent Dilford,
Rob Johnson, Bruce Gragkowski, who's on the Detroit Lions style, No, no, no, no,
(01:39:42):
and no again. Get to the Jets. I love Mark,
I love Mark. I love saying Chez. That's my guy.
Absolutely not, absolutely not be So here's an interesting runner up.
Russell Wilson is the guy. You look at the line
the body of work. One super bow should be two.
If somebody knew how to run the ball. We'll get
(01:40:03):
to that later because he's on this list as well.
Mark Brunell was my runner up really because even though
I didn't play with the Lions staff, he's on the
Lion staff. He threw my last touchdown when I played
for the New York Jets, fifty two yards a touchdown
from Mark Brunell him with the Jaguars. If Russell didn't
have a Super Bowl win two appearances, I would have
(01:40:25):
put mar Brunell on here. Alex Smith would have been third.
Speaker 2 (01:40:29):
What I was just gonna say, Alex Smith pretty damn
good player.
Speaker 5 (01:40:32):
He won't better Mark Brunell and Mark Brunell's prime.
Speaker 2 (01:40:34):
When catching it from a lefty and a righty, how
different is that.
Speaker 5 (01:40:38):
Velocity is different? Like it takes a second. He used
to Lucky. That touchdown was a go route. So the
ball is up in the air, it's not a problem.
But if it had been a shorter pass, it's just
because it's where it's coming from. You know what I'm saying.
Like when I'm catching the past said right handed quarterback
throwing to the right sideline, I can catch it right here.
That velocity on the left hand ball. It comes more
like this. It's it's interesting. But Russell Wilson, you saw
(01:41:02):
what he did when you know, when things were right
with him, I think he's a quarterback for this lesson.
Speaker 2 (01:41:07):
Yeah, not surprising at all and rightfully so.
Speaker 5 (01:41:10):
Yeah, I get it. This was the hardest position period,
the running back position. One under If you can't watch,
Marshawn Lynch's the guy that's on there if you do
see it, it was tough. I went with be Smoke.
I'll tell you why after I tell you the runner up,
runner up, Ladani and Thomlinson. Now, there are a lot
of guys out there like, how the hell did you
(01:41:30):
choose Marshaan over La Danny. I'll get to that. Ladaniu
was two. I want to say, Jamal Lewis was three
for me, Frank Gore was four and Thomas Jones five.
Speaker 2 (01:41:43):
Now now you can understand why this was so hard
of a choice, Marshawan.
Speaker 5 (01:41:48):
Look at the end of the day, it's about championships.
It's about knowing I can count on the guy. It's
about everything. He did it all And Marshawn was a monster.
I love playing with him. He's got the greatest run
in the last twenty five years because I don't want
to get deep into it because obviously that's Earl or
Walter or Barry. But that run he had just physical
(01:42:09):
and it's in the big moments. Everybody I name, where's
their big moment? Jamal Lewis did have two thousand yards,
but where's their big moment? Where's their playoff morning? I
told you about LT I told you my thoughts on
him in the playoffs. Yeah, that was Marshan. When you
need it, you need it on Monday football check, you
need on Thursday football check. You need it in the
(01:42:29):
Super Bowl? Check if they give Marshawan the ball? They
have two rings? Correct, they have two rings. Marshaan Lynch,
he's the guy. And I saw it like Marshwan was
Marshan when I played with Seattle.
Speaker 2 (01:42:42):
Yeah, you're talking about you're not necessarily looking strictly a production.
Are not just there's a combination of everything, and it's
who you played with. Like if people looked at this
and said who's the most talented, you'd probably say Ladadion Tomlinson.
It's not even close, yes, but that doesn't mean that
he was. It's the best when you played with him
in those types of criteria that you laid out. So
(01:43:04):
I love the explanation of why Marshawn Lynna.
Speaker 5 (01:43:06):
He's beastmo man? How could you not have be smote
on your squad?
Speaker 1 (01:43:09):
Like?
Speaker 5 (01:43:10):
How could you not have be smoll on ther squad?
Speaker 6 (01:43:12):
Kicker?
Speaker 5 (01:43:12):
I'm going with Nick Folks. I'm going with Nick Folks.
I know it doesn't really matter to you guys, do matter?
It matters to me. I saw him kick big kicks
in the playoffs. I saw him beat the coach. I
saw him beat the Bengals, I saw him beat the
Patriots in terms of kicking and being in that space.
You played eighteen years and in eighteen years he's eighty
five percent field goal kickern good Like Stephen Hoska would
(01:43:33):
have been running up another Seattle Seahawks. He was eighty
five percent over eleven years. Nick Folk was like eighty
four eight over eighteen years.
Speaker 2 (01:43:43):
So I went was the hell of a run.
Speaker 5 (01:43:44):
It's my kicker, man, it's my guy, my jet guy.
And then the head coach. I know a lot of
people hear me come on here and talk about the
New York Jets all the time. In fact, a lot
of you out there at tired me talking about the Jets.
Get over it. I played for him, So why didn't
I choose Rex? Pete's been to three Super Bowl and
he cost himself one. It should be two and three
or two and one, ladies one and three. Pete understood
(01:44:07):
it like Pete understood his players. He understood the chemistry.
He was the identity for the Seattle Seahawks. He understood
when to pull back when the press. It was fun.
And you know what that Seattle Seahawks rain was from
two thousand and eleven. In twenty sixteen, the Legion of
Boom headed by defensive head coach Pete Carroll. So I
(01:44:29):
got Pete over Rex because he went to the dance
and he won the dance.
Speaker 2 (01:44:33):
How surprise darned you that he's back.
Speaker 5 (01:44:36):
I'm not because it's the Raiders are in such disarray,
or they were they well, technically you still are when
you start with the Henry Rugg situation and in the
Gruden situation and firing Besasha when you should have kept
the situation like they are in just a horrible spiral.
You gotta hire someone that has been there, done it,
(01:44:56):
that can clean your culture up. Here's not the guy
that they're going with for the next ten years. Now,
he's the guy that they need to add some professionalism
for the next three seasons and then they'll figure out
who the guy is. So it makes sense in that regard.
Speaker 2 (01:45:10):
It does so, especially when they it's an organization hurt
Josh McDaniels. I mean, it's just it just doesn't He
just doesn't work, you know, it's pretty obvious. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:45:18):
Now, if their president of operations would have said what
Scott Harris said, I had no problem with it, right,
I would have no problem with him saying about the
Raiders and where they are. Oh, you know, sure, it
makes sense. Yeah whatever. Uh not the Kansas City Chiefs exactly,
or even the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (01:45:34):
Teams that are have a legitimate chance at getting there
one hundred right, that's fascinating. I love the the Braillen eleven.
You're gonna get to your best eleven defense defense next
week next week.
Speaker 5 (01:45:46):
Sometimes you threw something out there that i't even think
about just doing the players that I played against, because
that running back is easy. If this players I played against, Sorry,
mar don't give it away. I'm not I'm just sorry.
You're gonna get bumped.
Speaker 2 (01:46:00):
Yeah, because we're absolutely gonna do that, because I think.
Speaker 6 (01:46:03):
A Lion's edition would be fun to the different Lions
players you played against.
Speaker 4 (01:46:07):
Man, I think that would be.
Speaker 5 (01:46:08):
That would be fun. Who would be the third receiver?
Speaker 2 (01:46:11):
Would be the interesting one that you played against?
Speaker 5 (01:46:14):
No, no, no, he said to a Lions When I
instantly went to who would be the third receiver? We
know who wanted too?
Speaker 2 (01:46:18):
Is you're you're you're saying Calvin and Herman.
Speaker 5 (01:46:22):
I'm saying, yes, okay, yeah, because if.
Speaker 2 (01:46:28):
We go, if we if we're gonna do all time Lions.
Speaker 5 (01:46:32):
You thought it was Brown, Yeah, okay, No, no, no,
it's it's I should be and can't I agree? So no, don't.
Speaker 2 (01:46:42):
I don't disagree with that. I I like, I'm on
Rossaint Brown, don't don't take.
Speaker 5 (01:46:45):
But if you're gonna go with them to you.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
But but but he's he's not even close to the
other two. So I'm not gonna let's let's be careful.
Speaker 5 (01:46:51):
For you have some fun here. But yeah, this would
be that.
Speaker 2 (01:46:53):
That will be a lot of fun. We can do
the Lions, we can do the division, we can do
the best division we can.
Speaker 5 (01:46:58):
This team could do some damage.
Speaker 2 (01:47:00):
Hell yeah, I mean, if that were my team, I'll
be ordering super Bowl tickets.
Speaker 5 (01:47:05):
It seems this seam would be nice.
Speaker 2 (01:47:06):
I don't know where the weakness is, to be honest
with you, I really don't.
Speaker 5 (01:47:11):
The only thing up to one seven Crabtree and Sanntonio
they would have an issue on who's getting passes.
Speaker 2 (01:47:19):
Well, somebody else might have an issue on who's getting
passes too.
Speaker 5 (01:47:21):
I didn't care.
Speaker 2 (01:47:22):
I was talking about Vernon Davis.
Speaker 5 (01:47:27):
Vernon was actually cool because he's not used to getting
the ball because playing at the forty nine ers, they
pass him sometimes. But this will work.
Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
Yeah, that's that's well thought out. I do enjoy a
good discussion about the offensive line. So I love your
stories about those guys and up front and I'm.
Speaker 5 (01:47:49):
Two that offensive line has three Hall of Famers on it.
Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
Nick could get in.
Speaker 5 (01:47:55):
Fanica will probably be one of those. Derek Allen. How
Harry Allen just got in this year? He should have
been in at dB Alan fan get in like that?
Speaker 2 (01:48:04):
Yeah, I think, yeah, we talked about that a little bit.
Eric Eric Allen is such a really good player. There's
been so many really good guys, really good players who
perhaps didn't win, but were really good players. And maybe
didn't get the note right. Maybe they were overshadowed by
by certain players. I remember just the other night they
had something or it was last night actually something on
(01:48:26):
Baltimore Bullies. So did you watch that too?
Speaker 5 (01:48:30):
Is that the Netflix about the two thousand Ravens? Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:48:32):
I saw, okay, and how good they were and how
and as great as ray Lewis was, and he was great,
there's no question, but he did overshadow and he and
Ed Reid but overshadowed a lot of the other real.
Speaker 5 (01:48:44):
Players starts kallus.
Speaker 2 (01:48:46):
Yeah, really good players on that team. And I think
that's what happens sometimes with certain guys on certain teams,
where you're kind of like, Okay, we know who the
focal point is. That's what I love about the Lions, right,
It's really hard to pinpoint the focal points. Like you
look at the offense, you look at the defense. Which
side of the ball is better? Immediately? Most people say
(01:49:09):
the offense, don't they?
Speaker 5 (01:49:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:49:11):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:49:11):
But but if you look at the defense, you've got
to top five safeties. You got some would argue a
top ten linebacker. You've got a top five defensive end,
and when healthy, you've got a top ten defensive tackle.
That's pretty damn good. And and I'm not even counting
dj Reid. Dj Reid could be He's probably on the
on the outskirts of a top ten cornerback eleven eleven. Yeah,
(01:49:35):
so there's something to be said for that. I love
the balance that they have in that regard.
Speaker 5 (01:49:40):
Yeah, balance is key. Man like ray Lewis is also
one of the biggest personalities in NFL history. Ray Lewis
is just a damn good player. I think other players
would have got more shine, Like Luke Heagley's one of
the best linebackers ever played a game, but because of
he wasn't a ray Lewis personality. Thomas Davis gets some shine.
You remember the other players will that team? Josh Norman Like,
(01:50:01):
I remember more about Josh Mormon than Luke Keigley because
what his mouth, his players, the antics, the things, so
sometimes the antics they take away from other players.
Speaker 2 (01:50:12):
Let's get to the mail bags. We do it at
this time every single day on the Braylen Edwards Show
Monday through Friday two till four here on Woodward Sports
kool Aid.
Speaker 6 (01:50:20):
Yes, so you know what it is one of the
first ones I see you in the chat ornery you
of him?
Speaker 5 (01:50:26):
Dad?
Speaker 6 (01:50:27):
He wants to know, Braylan, where'd you get that kick?
Speaker 2 (01:50:30):
In polo?
Speaker 1 (01:50:31):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:50:32):
Is fire?
Speaker 3 (01:50:33):
Bro?
Speaker 5 (01:50:35):
This is special orders came from shimb beck La Hall.
So I don't know what to tell you. Now, I
got this as a former player.
Speaker 4 (01:50:42):
Got to make the team to get that one.
Speaker 5 (01:50:43):
Yeah, pretty much pretty much my apologies. Maybe yeah, I'm
not even gonna lie man, you gotta make the team.
Speaker 2 (01:50:50):
How much how much swag do you try to get
from from from Michigan compared to maybe your other stops,
the Jets, the Browns? Do you have anything in your
closet that doesn't have a mission A Jets, a Browns,
a Woodward Sports or Liners or a Seattle Seahawks logo
on it.
Speaker 5 (01:51:08):
I have Lions stuff just because I live here in
duty show. You got some pretty fine Lions, So I
don't mind. I don't mind wearing the shortstuff. I'm born here,
so I like that. You know I'm representing the city.
Other than that, none else, Yeah, everything else is what.
We don't even have forty nine or stuff. I don't
have any Seahawks stuff. No, I don't have no Brown stuff.
(01:51:31):
I just only wear Jets, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (01:51:33):
Okay, all right, what else we got?
Speaker 6 (01:51:36):
Hey, you know we got something about the Detroit Pistons.
This one's this one's an interesting one, and it's about
if Chris Middleton gets bought out, should the Detroit Pistons
bring him in. That's an interesting one, Chris Middleton, that retread.
Speaker 2 (01:51:51):
Depending on the cost. Yes, I would say, depending on
the cost. We talked about this the other day at
the golf outing while Braylen was golfing with doctor Eliers. Yeah, yeah,
I would. I mean there's certain guys. Josh Giddy would
be a guy I really want if you're running out
of options. Yeah, I'm talking about if there's no chance
(01:52:13):
for gett Josh Giddy because it's gonna cost you twenty
million dollars. I'm talking about one of those situations. A
one year deal for a big who can shoot it
like that, A taller guy, a power forward if I
want to go bold school, a power forward type of guy. Yeah,
I would. I would probably at least explore that opportunity,
depending on the cost.
Speaker 5 (01:52:29):
Yeah, I'm saying anything out of Chris Middleton since they
won the championship.
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
Pass Sometimes when you go, I mean, if you go
to Washington, it's I do believe you said this, and
you've kind of convinced me of it. When you go
to a team that has not just the talent, but
the the winning mentality and the type of i'll use
overuse the word culture, I think that makes a big difference.
(01:52:54):
So I think that something like that could help him.
I think it helped me the leak beasily Tim Hardaway.
Look at what he said to Karris Lavert about the
Detroit and the Pistons and how they handled himself he said.
Even when he didn't say it to Lavert, he said
it on a podcast. I think that would make a difference.
Speaker 5 (01:53:10):
I definitely agree. I don't have a problem with him
as a relations to the leadership as it relates to
the winning culture. He won a championship in twenty twenty two,
so all that's fine. He's always hurt. That's about he's
always heard. So now I'm bringing individual in here. Pay
him some money. Yes, the leadership aspect, but eighty two games,
I can't count on him, and then when the playoff comes,
when I really need him, he hasn't played. So for me,
(01:53:30):
I would be just too nervous that the pattern that
repeated itself, would repeat itself again.
Speaker 6 (01:53:37):
And the only reason why I would probably take a
flyer is just because I do believe the Pistons are
at a point where they don't have to depend on
those vets as much. If he's cheap enough for the buyout,
maybe you'd take a flyer. If he's willing to come here,
and if the situation here is right.
Speaker 2 (01:53:52):
He's thirty three, I mean, if you're not gonna take it,
if you're gonna take Al Horford, right, Al Horford, he's
older than that.
Speaker 5 (01:53:58):
He plays it, but he plays plays the Celtics. The
Celtics have put him in it. Let me not talk
about the Celtics him. He takes care of his body
the right way and you can tell because he's in shape.
You're nineteen year twenty. He's played when they've asked him
to play thirty eight minutes. He was able to do
that as well. So he's somebody I trust. Now. Whether
it's fair or not, you know, I don't care.
Speaker 1 (01:54:19):
What fair is.
Speaker 2 (01:54:19):
If Middleton gave you sixty games, yeah, so it So
he's done. He's done that more often than not in
his in his career. Over the last few seasons he's
been injured, I believe. Let me ask you this, what's probably.
Speaker 5 (01:54:32):
Not fair, but what is in April? What is in
the April look like?
Speaker 2 (01:54:35):
Though?
Speaker 5 (01:54:35):
For him? If he's playing sixty games, like, how is
his whear withal in the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (01:54:40):
Yeah? Well, I'm just saying if he were healthy enough
and were able to play that many games, I would
guess that would be a win for you. Do we
think and this this is an older body, right, I
mean thirty three years old or whatever, and he's played
thirteen years in the league. Yeah, what about the young
guys who are injured quite a bit on this team.
We've seen that too, haven't we. Does that concern you?
Speaker 5 (01:55:00):
Uh, they're young. It's gonna sound crazy. They're young to
figure it out, like, but he's older, he's always hurt,
and he's older and he's always hurt.
Speaker 2 (01:55:10):
Okay, so the last few years. Yeah here, So I
just pulled it up. Last year he played thirty seven games,
The year before fifty five, the year before thirty three.
So that's the last three years. That's a that's a
trend long enough for to make meep pause a little bit.
For Chris Middleton, the year before that so twenty twenty two,
he played sixty six games. If he played sixty six
games with this team, not that you necessarily need him.
(01:55:33):
I'm talking about a healthy body who can give you
something at a decent price.
Speaker 6 (01:55:38):
That's he can get it efficiently. But you're right, man,
it's those injury concerns. But if he can give you
those sixty games, maybe even fifty five with the back
half of the season in the playoffs, really what you're
gearing for. I'm actually okay with it. And shout out
to Jordan from in My he's one of our supporters
at what we're Pistons to appreciate you. Shout out jan
from My for that use.
Speaker 2 (01:55:57):
And by the way, when he played, when he played
fifty five games, yeah, twenty seven minutes a game and
average fifteen points. If I don't need him for twenty seven,
that's really okay. So if I if he gave you
fifteen points per game, I'm just I'm just saying, remember,
this is not a guy you're relying on. This is
a depth guy. This is completely different than when he played.
Speaker 6 (01:56:16):
When you put it that way, I get a little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:56:18):
More because in Tobias Harris last year when you bring
it Tobias Hairs, you knew he was going for great
example thirty okay one, and he was gonna be a starter.
Speaker 6 (01:56:25):
And it's not Isaiah's Stewart type of thing either, where
he was vital when you miss him, we lost a
lot in that playoffs, especially going up against a cat
with Chris Middleton, it might be a situation where if
that money is right, it's just let's see what we
got from a guy who we know is one of
the most efficient scores and ISO scores in this game.
(01:56:45):
We I don't know too many people on our roster
right now who can effectively and officially put their back
to the basket and get a bucket. Chris Middleton has that,
and then we already know about It's.
Speaker 2 (01:56:54):
Not the committee, it's not the bigs, Detroit's bigs.
Speaker 5 (01:56:57):
It's not oh my god, I only have one player
on the team. I can do that. Maybe I was
I was actually gonna say Tobias Hairs.
Speaker 3 (01:57:06):
I was I was gonna say, I was gonna say Tobias,
Tobias Cay is getting he can, but to like Tobias
will be the only one that I would say for
sure I know doesn't have doesn't have to look at
the room.
Speaker 2 (01:57:17):
Yeah, yeah, agreed.
Speaker 6 (01:57:18):
Shout out to Rando Smalls as I love you Randall man.
He says, do you guys think any of the Lion's
vets could get traded or released?
Speaker 2 (01:57:31):
That's a good one.
Speaker 5 (01:57:31):
That's a good one. I might have to wait. I
might have to answer that one tomorrow. Maybe we wait
just a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:57:40):
Yeah, I mean, you don't think like that. You don't
think like a Sheene Zilstra fits that mold or Cody
Sorosdale fits that mold or anything like that. I don't
think they're necessarily vets, uh not from not from their
too deep. I would say, not from their too deep.
Like like, I don't I don't think Tim Patrick's getting released. Okay,
I think he's going to take a secondary role from
(01:58:02):
what he said, But I don't think he's getting released
unless they.
Speaker 5 (01:58:04):
Get when they trade him in October. If Tesla is
playing that well, and.
Speaker 13 (01:58:10):
You depend on what he depending on what you could
get for him like that, based on the conversation, as
you said, like a talking about what Tesla was brought
in here and what you believe was going to happen.
Speaker 5 (01:58:20):
They bought him in there to play. They bought him
in here to be that third wide receiver if they
see it early and they didn't have a knee. I
got traded after the fourth game of the season. My
in two thousand and nine, it was boom, Hey, you
know what we're done. Sends you over here, Jets like,
we need a player, we need this player that can happen.
Speaker 2 (01:58:40):
Yeah, and if Dominic Levett actually does pretty well, suddenly
you've got uh, I'm ros Saint Brown, You've got Jamison Williams,
You've got Isaac Teslaw, you've got Dominic Lovett, and you
know Tim Patrick might be that odd man out. I
hope not, because you don't.
Speaker 5 (01:59:00):
Leave Raymond who was That's a great point, because leave
Raymond made a lot of plays for them the year
before and the year before that.
Speaker 2 (01:59:06):
There's your answer. Yeah, if you're looking at a veteran
who might be on the way out, that would be
the answer. Great call, good catch.
Speaker 6 (01:59:13):
Here's another good one here. Uh, this is from Dante
one five to one. We should probably just name the
super chat system and the chat after him. But yeh yeah,
he's keep going. Would you be shocked the Tigers brought
up one of their young players like Kevin McGonagle to
play shortstop and keep Hobby in Centerphis.
Speaker 2 (01:59:32):
I'd be stunned. I'd be stunned. Yeah, yeah, I don't.
I don't think that's happening. I think it's a lot
different bringing up Jackson Job and bringing him out of
the bullpen to bringing up a Jackson Job and double
a as your twenty seventh man. Remember, you only get
one extra guy call up in September, so we're getting close,
and you're getting pretty close.
Speaker 5 (01:59:52):
Yeah, so than a month or is it?
Speaker 10 (01:59:55):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (01:59:56):
Was it one in one? Is it one position player
on one pitcher? I'm trying to remember. But either way,
I don't think it's gonna be Kevin McGonagall, Okay, I
mean it could be. I think it might be somebody
with some thump, all right, it might be somebody who
can you're gonna bring off the bench and you're gonna do.
I mean a lot of times what they do is
(02:00:16):
that organization does a really good job of bringing up
some young guys to get them around the team, to
get a feel for that. I don't know what the
rules are with that. I'll have to look into that.
But long winded answer I don't think it happens with
Kevin McGonagall. But thanks for the super chats. We always
