Speaker 2 (00:49):
Hey, hope you had a great weekend. This is the
Braillen Edwards Show here on Woodward Sports. Right is with
us kool Aidi of course, and the man Brailan Edwards
who almost almost predicted the exact score of Saturday's game
in Eastlanted. We are going to get to that. We're
going to get to a lot of different football things
that are on your slate here today. But first I

(01:12):
know you know, I was thinking about you all weekend
for a couple of different reasons, primarily because of the
loss of a loss of a close friend of yours
and a teammate. And it's it's super challenging you've gone through.
If people understood the last week. I don't want to
share too much, but you've had a lot of heartbreaking

(01:33):
moments this past week. You've handled it like a true leader.
But this one's this one's just as difficult to take
because Nick Mangold was a good friend of yours, wasn't he.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
I appreciate that. You know.

Speaker 6 (01:45):
I'm tired of waking up on Sunday or Monday and
finding out one of my teammates, one of my brothers
I'm going to war with, is no longer on this earth.
Xia colms from me last week with University of Michigan
a heart attack, and now Nick Mango, who's been suffering
from this genetic disorder for since two thousand and six,
is when he got the information, which was.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
A year in which he was drafted.

Speaker 6 (02:07):
It's sad to see another brother gone, you know, as
it relates to Nick Mango. You know, if I take
off the Michigan hat Man just for respect and love.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Of the rivalry and who he was. It's an amazing teammate,
amazing friend.

Speaker 6 (02:24):
I think, you know, the respecting the rivalry in the
Ohio State Michigan game is a lot of respect. They
go through a lot of the same things we go through.
They wanted just as bad as what we do. So
when I first met him, when I got to the Jets,
and that's how I met him, he was, oh, great,
another Michigan guy on the team because Dave Harris was
already there.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
But you know, he said, look, I don't care what
happened in Cleveland.

Speaker 6 (02:44):
All ass that you come in, you give you all
ass every day you play like a Jet.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
We can have some fun. We can figure this thing out.
And boy was he right.

Speaker 6 (02:51):
We definitely had some fun with the back to back
AFC Championship games. And you know, he was a main
reason why he was a mainstay. And he's younger than me,
but you know, Nick was every bit the professional. Like
how he prepared four games, you know, how he kept
people accountable four games. I tell you a quick story
in twenty ten, you know, got a dui on a Monday,

(03:13):
and when I came back into the team's good graces
on that Wednesday or that Tuesday and everybody else. They're
trying to, like, you know, dance around some friends. Dude like, hey,
look you're all right, it's everything cool, your family straight man.
This is crazy. You know they're tripping. They shouldn't have
shouldn't have stopped you. You handled off, blot all these
things to have my back and show love. He showed
love in a different way. He was like, hey, look man,

(03:33):
I'm glad you're right, but we can't have this, he said,
for whatever the situation was, he said, we got to
have you more accountable, he said, because we're gonna need
you down the stretch. He said, we're trying to get
back to what we did last year and.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Go even further.

Speaker 6 (03:44):
Well, we got to the two thousand and IFSC Championship
and we lost to the coach. He said, man, we
need you to go further. He said, you're a leader
on this team.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
I know you're year.

Speaker 6 (03:51):
This is your two for you, but this is your squad,
you know, so what you do young guys pay attention to.
So this was him, this was him daring to be
a leader. This was him daring to say, this is
what needs to be said to a guy and considered
a colleague, and you.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Know it was a message receipt.

Speaker 6 (04:06):
You know, after I got together, for lack of a
better word, we finished strong, lost again in the FC Championship.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
But he was just that kind of guy. He was
that kind of teammate. He was there.

Speaker 6 (04:14):
He was a good bridge between the coaches and the players.
You know, he was a good baramad on all things.
McCallum and I will have a toast for you, my brother.
But I said my love to Matthew, I said my
love to Thomas, I said my love to Charlotte, and
I said my love to his wife Jennifer. He was
an amazing family man and outside of going to Ohio State,

(04:35):
Nick did everything the right way, and he did everything
the right way, man, and you will be missed, but
God has brought you home.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
And the reason the only guy knows.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
How did you take that type of constructive criticism from
him after the incident.

Speaker 6 (04:51):
I was in the space to take it well because,
you know, getting traded from the Browns, I love Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
I left a lot of baggage behind.

Speaker 6 (04:58):
I was so excited to get out of Cleveland and
be in a situation where you know, Rex Ryan was
a great.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Coach, cared about his players.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
I thought the team was on the bigger things and
better things, and I just loved being a piece of
the New York Jets. They brought me back my second year,
they picked up my option, and it was going to
be fun.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Well it was fun.

Speaker 6 (05:16):
So when he gave me that criticism, Sheppard was coming
from a place where I had already kind of gotten
through some of the weeds, and so when it happened,
I was ready to say to myself, like, this is unacceptable.
This is not what we need. This is not what
they need. And you're trying to you're trying to make
a home here. You can't try to make a home
here and f up in this manner. But when he

(05:36):
came to me with that information, it was like, he's right.
I was already thinking that. But I'm Glasd. Somebody said it,
I'm Blasd somebody, and I had this moment, especially a captain.
It's why he were that sea on his chest, So
we can I have somebody to hold me accountable. I
have somebody to say, hey, look that's bes not coming
from a Rex Ryan, not coming from a Bryan Schottenheimer
or you brought up Henry Ellert one time. I forgot

(05:57):
to tell you that's my wife, receivers coach in New York,
so I know him sixteen seasons of pure route running assassin.
You're absolutely correct, But I took it well because I
wanted to be a JET. I wanted to stay at
JET and I really meant when I say like j
et s, I mean that much like I do when
I talk about Harbors. So I received it well in
that moment.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
You're head coach at the time. Rex Ryan was very
emotional over the week, and I'm sure you were as well.
When you're that emotional over somebody, he's obviously made an impact,
not just on you, but on Rex Ryan and others too.
I mean, is that just kind of who he was?
Or was he the quiet guy that everybody just wait,
he waited for them to come to him.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Nah, Nick's not quiet. Nick's not loud, but Nick's not quiet. Nick.
Nick wasn't a quiet individual.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
A lot of laughs, the big Santa kind of like
the Santa Chest when he cracks a joke and stays there.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Well, I don't know about that.

Speaker 6 (06:50):
Did you guys lose last year by thirty like that's him,
Like that's his humor. And nah, he we listened.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 6 (06:58):
Rex fell in love with Nick because it's a defensive
guy and he likes all things defense. But Nickolas physical,
Nicklas in those trenches, Nicks to somebody you can trust.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
They talk about foxhole guys. He's a foxhole guy. Yeah,
you know for this. So you built that relationship with
and I you know that. Michigan O House stated, I
don't care who you are.

Speaker 6 (07:14):
It takes a second to like to still warm up
to that other side, even if your teammates took me
a while. I was say, Antonio, I can go down
the list of guys I played with from my house
that it takes you a while. Didn't take that long
with Nick, Like it did not take that long with Nick.
That the first time I was.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
In the huddle with Nick, I knew what Nick was about.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
I get the practice that.

Speaker 6 (07:32):
So he's calling, you know, he's getting all the guys
getting off guys ready for my Mark may call the players,
but the center typically gets everybody together. So it's my
first practice and I go out there and I'm excited.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
I'm ready to shump at the bit.

Speaker 6 (07:43):
I hope I'm going to get ReBs throw me a
jump ball so I can show them.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
What they've got.

Speaker 6 (07:47):
And so I'm kind of like I'm my thing was
always half in the huddle, so like I'm legitimately if
the huddles form here, I'm a couple of feet over
I can hear because I gotta I have to run
all the way out there, run.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
I gotta get a line.

Speaker 6 (08:00):
So let me just huh yep, yep, okay, cool, and
I'm taking off. I tried that with the first day.
He say hey, hey, hey, hey, hold on, hold on,
hold on seventeen, getting a huddle, seventeen, getting ah Hodder,
come on seventeen, getting a huder. I was like, all right,
nobody's talking to Okay, fine, I get in a huddle.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
And then after practice we had a moment. He came
up to me.

Speaker 6 (08:23):
He said, naw, you know, no big thing, and just
we do things a certain way. But I recognize the
energy from Michigan, so I know he had that energy
from Ohio State, like Lloyd Carr, we do things a
certain way. You gotta be in Michigan, man, It's gotta
look a certain way. Same thing with him with Trustle
it's gotta look a certain way. You gotta be accountable
if you're supposed to be in a huddle, get yourself
in the huddle, get the full play, because I have missed.

(08:44):
I have missed a word or two before not being
fully in the huddle.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
So he was absolutely right. But that's the guy he was.

Speaker 6 (08:50):
That's my first practice and he's the only guy that
came up to me with that energy after the situation
like this is the guy who was That's why he's
in the.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Ring of Ronan for the New York Jets. I'm glad
he was able to receive his jacket. It not possumously.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yeah, yeah, I am to eleven years with the Jets,
a seven time Pro Bowl or two time All Pro,
truly one of the better Jets offensive linemen in the
in the history of the sport. Did you did his
impact and I'm sure your impact on him as well,
But did his impact on you change you moving forward
and how you led with other people too?

Speaker 6 (09:25):
Because then it got to the point where, look, I'm
the guy that I will go out to practice and
I will legitimately proverbially I will kill myself in practice
and make sure I'm doing all the things, but I'm
also going to be funny.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
I'm also going to crack jokes.

Speaker 6 (09:38):
I'm also not playing pranks, but I'm I'm doing the things.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I'm that guy.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
I have to have fun.

Speaker 6 (09:44):
I like to enjoy it, Like, look, this is this
is something I do in my life. This isn't my life,
per se. So I like to have fun. But then
looking at it from Nick's point of view and just
certain things. When I got to Seattle, I started to
excuse San fran first. And in Seattle, I start noticing
myself talking to the younger players a little different. Like
I started noticing when they're goofing off a little bit. Hey,

(10:06):
let's let's let's let's tighten it up.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
You know what I'm saying. We got to ask kick
on Sunday, what are we out here doing? You know
what I'm saying. That was another thing he was big on.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
So I started noticing that how I'm talking, how I
gave the game back.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
You would always see Nick working.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
With some of the younger offensive linemen, some of the
offensive linemen that you know didn't start or scout team guys.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Or thurds stream guys.

Speaker 6 (10:25):
You would see him off in the corner giving those guys,
but it was Vladimir Dukas, which was a young project
for those guys. He would be off in the corner
figuring things out.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Hey, look, man on this play, aren't you staying here?
If you can just watch him?

Speaker 6 (10:38):
Couldn't hear the conversation, but I could see him over
there working. I could see him over there teaching a
younger teammate and getting with him and getting that Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
When do you think that begins in the NFL? We've
seen it with Taylor Decker. You brought it up earlier
this year. He was with he was working with Giovanni Monu.
I believe during training camp. When did you start doing
that as a quote unquote veteran where you felt like, Okay,
I'm in a position now where I can help some
of the younger players.

Speaker 6 (11:02):
Yeah, it's up to your point. I don't think it's
an age. I think it's more so when it's how
you view the organization views you. So when the organization
is looked like when they're legitimately seventy percent of the
offense is going your way, like they value you, they
care about you, like this is you're that team. So
in that space, you realize, I gotta start changing some

(11:22):
of the things I do when I'm the focal point,
when I'm getting led, when you start seeing your name
getting mentioned a little bit in team meetings more, when
you start to see people following you, or you'll watch film.
I think it was like my fourth It was my
third year in the league, and I was watching some
of our younger guys in practice dude one on once,
which is my favorite drill anytime I can embarrass the DV,

(11:43):
sign me up. But watching one on ones and I'm
starting to see some of the younger guys, whether it
was Steptoe, whether it was Travis, whether it was Brian Rubiskit,
another HOIU State guy, like emulating my moves. Like I'm
watching them at the line of scrimms.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
I'm like, oh, that's my move.

Speaker 6 (11:59):
I'm like, oh, that's top of the route on a
comeback route. Whoa I stared up inside and come back
and the oh. So then you start watching that, lets
me know I gotta keep it going. In terms of talking,
when you like that team, you can feel people looking
at you.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
It's an energy like and I learned that at Michigan.
You learned that at high school.

Speaker 6 (12:17):
You learn it, and literally when people are looking for you,
what is number one thinking in this moment? What's number
eighty thinking this moment? What is seventeen doing right now?
And you can feel people look at you like that.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
That's when you know and bring you up in one.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
You feel like you have to say say it, say it.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
That's really good, that's a great life lesson and sorry
for your loss. Hundred sixty four games played for Nick
Mangold and New York Jets, all one sixty four as
a starter, that tells you something, all right. We were
both engaged with the Michigan Michigan State battle that took
place Saturday night in Eastlanting. I was down there for

(12:57):
all kinds of tailgating, absolute blast, walking around talking with
different people. I love the camaraderie between Michigan and Michigan
State people and friendships and so on and so forth.
I did talk with a lot of people who just
the apathy on the part of MSU is glaring, okay,

(13:18):
and I'm not making fun of them, okay. Again, my
daughter is a senior there. I want them to do well.
I think it's important for our state. I think, you know,
I want our kids. I want our really good football
players in the state of Michigan. I want them staying.

Speaker 7 (13:32):
I think it's been good that Brailyn has also stood
on that too, saying he actually wants a good Michigan
State program for the better of you.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah, and I believe him because he's a man of
his work. Sometimes I wonder about that because I heard
that during tom Izzo's tenure, of course, when I was
calling Michigan basketball, and he's at the beginning of Tommy
Amaker and the beginning of John B.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
Line.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
I want them to be good, and then suddenly that
team starts beating. You're like, hold on a second, man.
This gets a little old. But I believe as an
outsider with no skin in the game, I want our kids,
Detroit kids, Grand Rapids kids, wherever. I want them going
to Michigan, Michigan State, the regional schools. I want them
to promote the state of Michigan football. But walking around

(14:13):
and talking, I went to four different tailgates, and there's
just no connection and passion that I saw on the
part of Michigan State for that game against Michigan, almost
as if they have they accepted that they're not going

(14:33):
to win, and that's really tough to take. That was
my guess. You've got a lot of friends who are
Michigan State fans. We talked with one on Friday, TJ.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Duckett.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Awesome time. If you missed any of it, follow us
on our social media channel. So it was a fantastic interview.
Did you get the same feel or am I off
base there?

Speaker 6 (14:51):
I don't think you're off base, And this is why
I think. This is why I think about it. The
rivalry with Michigan State has always been an annoying one
because Michigan the State is the type of institution where
and this has always been I'll get to who they
are now, but they've always been the type of institution.
If they're not good, they're not talking about the game,
and then when the game comes up, then they talk
about it a little bit. It was like, you know,

(15:11):
they'll have conversations. Don't let them be up in the game.
Now they're talking about something. Don't let them win because
then they got to talk.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
It was like, oh my god, we beat you. You
gotta suck this, blah blah blah. Preach if they like
that's it. If they win, it's all you gotta suck.
We wont.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
They never had faith that they were gonna win. They
weren't even optimistic they were gonna win. On the outside,
when we win, which throughout the rivalry, with the exception
of a small space which I'll talk about too, like
it's been we're supposed to win. Like when you win
and say, well you were supposed to win, what we suck?
They continue to put move the gold post back. So
why are we even in the rivalry with them? Like
if you guys don't care if the conversation when we

(15:47):
win as always or we were supposed to win, then
why do I care what you say?

Speaker 5 (15:51):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (15:52):
In this rivalry because that's who Michigan State is. Like
they expect to lose and if they win, they have
something to say. If they don't, then it's you should
have beat us. In fact, you should have beat this
by more. You should have be this by more. So
that's why I tap out and I have no apathy
for him in that department. They got beat, you typically
do get beat.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
One hundred and eighteen all time meetings between the two schools.
I think it's a hell of a rivalry. I want balance,
But I understand why you wouldn't. For sure, As a
guy who bleeds maze in blue, I was just a
little surprised that people had just come to the conclusion
before even going into the game or even just watching
the game. I'm fine playing corn hole while the game's
going on, because I just don't think we've got a chance.

Speaker 6 (16:32):
Okay, now here's the other side of that. Why would
you feel any different? I completely understand the people in
Michigan State. You got a negligent school who legitimately has
done the mil Tucker thing. Why would you hire mel Tucker?
Like who hired Miltucker? Why would you hire Miltucker the coach?
Like the Nardoozy situation. You botch that your president that
you had for lack of the interim president situation that

(16:56):
you guys were operating under the ad for the last
twelve years, Like who.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Has an interim president ad for twelve season? This is
where Michigan State had.

Speaker 6 (17:04):
You finally got some nil money, You had Spartan dogs,
all that going for you.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Mil Tucker situation messed that up.

Speaker 6 (17:10):
Now, in a rush to hire a coach, you hired
a coach from a conference that was legitimately depleting because
what he can recruit on the West coast, the landscape
has changed.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
You bought a man into East.

Speaker 6 (17:21):
Lansing that knew nothing about East Lansing. Fine, you don't
have to know anything about Michigan State. Can you recruit? Well,
he said he could, but I didn't see that. Do
you understand how to use a transfer portal? Michigan State
still had the same issues they had last year, and
still had the same issues they had the year before that.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
That means he doesn't know how to use Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
I don't disagree with any of that. You know, Michigan
did that with rich Rodriguez. Okay, why would you? Why
in the world would you hire Rich Rodriguez with Michigan.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
This isn't about what they did.

Speaker 6 (17:50):
This is about me understanding the people in East Lansing
that have no faith in the team, as they shouldn't. Yeah,
there's nothing about East Lansing that they should have faith
in because nothing has been given to them in the
last let's say, twenty twenty five years.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
Nothing has been given to them to really have faith in.

Speaker 6 (18:07):
And I had a brief synopsis with K nine, Yeah,
and then and then that was it.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
So I understand why they don't care.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
I wish, honestly, I wish you and Brittany were with
my wife and I when we went out to dinner
Friday night with a.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Bunch of.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Springsteen. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
I know, I know you had bigger plans, but it
would have been fun because I would have loved the
conversation you would have had with And we want to
three other couples, and all three guys are spartans, which
is great, and their wives two of the three are
spartans as well. And one of them actually said to me.
I asked them legitimately, if they lose tomorrow and we
expect them to lose, what do you think happens with

(18:45):
Michigan State football? And he said immediately he should be fired.
I said, okay, who do you want? You know he
didn't necessarily have the answer that I think an informed
person should have. Yeah, but I said, give me the
reason why it's such an appealing job, like I think
it is, but I like to hear from people. He
literally said to me, well, think about it. We've won

(19:08):
national championships in hockey and basketball. And I went, hold
on a second, do you honestly think anybody coming from
an SEC school or anywhere, gives a rats ass that
you want a hockey championship in two thousand and seven.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
Honestly, I don't think so.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
I don't think so. Do you think anybody cares that
they've won a basketball championship in two thousand Absolutely not,
because if they did, Kentucky would be really good. Eric
Klina would be really good, Duke would be really good. Denver,
who wins hockey championships would have a really good football program.
That doesn't matter. What matters is what what do you

(19:47):
think is the most important thing as this school goes
forward to try and replace, if they indeed do fire
Jonathan Smith. And I'm not advocating for it. I'm just
saying if they do, because eight Power four schools twelve overall,
but eight Power four schools are now in search of
a head coach LS with Brian Kelly, James Franklin Penn State,

(20:11):
Billy Napier at Florida. Those are the top three jobs.
At least many people.

Speaker 6 (20:14):
Feel, go get James Franklin, Go get James Franklin because
Michigan State. In my opinion, this is this is no shade,
is the truth. They're not looking to win national championships.
Now you can say they are you be lying to yourself.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Let's be honest. They're looking to be competitive.

Speaker 6 (20:28):
Michigan State is looking to do what be ten and
two be in a conversation and they want.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
To be in the college football ball toy be next year,
maybe next year, maybe next year.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Who's the best person at that? It's James Franklin.

Speaker 6 (20:39):
James Franklin can recruit and he literally could recruit it
about what's that an eight hour drive from here. He
knows this area, he knows his landscape, the Big ten,
and he is good in the living room. He can
get your kid to come to Michigan State. Why not
have him?

Speaker 8 (20:54):
He does recruit Toda.

Speaker 6 (20:57):
Michigan State is looking for a sense of competency. That's
what we're looking for for Michigan State. Like, we're not
looking for them to win a national championship next year.
We're not looking for them to get into the playoffs
in the next two years.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
You'd like to get to a bowl game?

Speaker 5 (21:11):
I want.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
I guess the argument would be this, I'm.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Not just Michigan State. When' you be happy with that?

Speaker 2 (21:16):
I'm not dismissing that. Three and seven in his career
against Michigan, So that's number one. Number two, he's in
the midst of a forty nine point seven million dollar
buyout if you allow me to round out a fifty
million dollar buyout, which shouldn't matter. Okay, how much is
it going to cost you to get a guy like that?
You know I think you need to do. Yeah, you

(21:37):
need a deal right and and therein lies. I think
your your most valid point, whether it's James, James Franklin
or anybody a big name guy. Too many times I
hear Michigan State fans and my buddy said this to
me Friday night. We just want a guy who's going
to come and stay. And I'm like, you want a
guy who's gonna come and win. That should be first

(21:59):
and four foremost. It's ridiculous. I mean, that's the mindset
and what I think it's. Okay, I say this to
people all the time. Change your mindset a little bit,
your mindset is what I mean. You've said this to
me numerous times. My team's got to compete for a
national title. I'm like, good for you.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
Well that's what I was told growing up.

Speaker 6 (22:16):
Yeah, and then when I went there, That's what I
kept and then holding to that accountability. Look, I struggled,
like as did other Michigan allungs. We struggled from two
thousand and seven to two thousand and twenty one. There's
a lot of butt whooping in there and a lot
of nine times being competitive. But it didn't matter. Every
time I turned on the product. The expectation was. The
expectation meant whether we were supposed to be or not.

(22:37):
The expectation is the expect I love that until eventually,
well it panned out.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
And damn it. That's the way it's supposed to be.
Legitimate expectations. Yeah, all right, if you're a chip away,
you can't expect that. You can expect it make mac West.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
But it's true, it really is.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Michigan State's mindset is almost very similar to that of
the Tiger's mindset, where it's like, okay, if we get here,
except we're good. That's why you when you should be
saying I expect to be I expect to compete with Michigan,
Ohio State, and Oregon for big ten titles.

Speaker 6 (23:13):
They got to bring in somebody with a bigger mindset.
Then you can't bring in somebody that comes from Oregon State,
where they also are at the bottom of the totem
pole in that conference. You gotta bring somebody here with
some different energy. Like I'm not saying somebody has to
be loud and have the best personality. Don't have to
run around ball hit it talking about ski you my
and then roll the boat. They don't have to do that.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Roll the boat. You don't come jumping in. That's all
about me. Everybody. Are the cameras rolling all right, I'm
gonna jump in. I want you guys all to catch me.
People want that. You then they got steamrolled by Iowa.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
You don't need that.

Speaker 6 (23:45):
But you have to come in with some personality from
swag to where if I'm a player, if I'm a
family and I'm like, where's my kid gonna go to school?
Let's look at his Michigan State situation. You have this
new head coach. Okay, he's got some personality, a bottom,
he's got some bottom. Okay, kind of like what's going on.
Let's do a little deeper. Let's see what he is
also too in the landscape. Now, where a team, a
school can change in two years one year. I don't

(24:07):
want to hear this. We want a guy to stay. No,
we don't.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
We want to go.

Speaker 6 (24:10):
I want a guy that can come turn my program
around and make me buy into it. So what if
it happens fast, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm not sorry.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
That is just the rate that things move. You gotta
find a guy that can figure that out. Michigan State.
They got money.

Speaker 6 (24:23):
They just don't want to waste it on a guy
that doesn't know what he's doing. They don't want to
waste it on players like they want to make sure
the guy can sell them on who they're buying, what
they're buying, what they're doing. They got a lot of
money up there in these lands. If you get the
guy in there that can pull the money out of
those pockets, now you find yourself a guy. Johnath Smith
is not pulling money out of Magic Johnson's pocket.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
He is not pulling money out of Nick Matt.

Speaker 6 (24:47):
Eshpiel who's down the street, or or Gilbert or insert
another one.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
He's billions thought about it like that.

Speaker 6 (24:53):
He's not pulling any money out of the private thought.
You gotta have a guy that can pull some money
out of his pockets because they have it. But you know,
things about billionaires and people up there they not spending
anymore unless they.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Know they want to see something. It's called ROI what's
the return ofment? And I don't need a suite. I
don't want you. I can buy the game. I want wins, Okay.
I want to go to national championship games. I want
to go to college football playoff games. Right, So I'm
interested to know what you think the criteria would be,

(25:27):
because I think you got to be able to raise money.
I think you're one hundred percent got to prove that
you can recruit the area. There's no doubt about that.
And you've got to be able to if you don't
know the portal. If you don't know the portal, you're
in deep crap, right, that's it.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (25:41):
And I think another thing as well is when Michigan
lost his way underneath rich Wide, it seemed like they
lost their way in the Big Ten. Overall all the
goals that I had always heard growing up. My dad
was a Michigan grat It was like Big Ten Championship,
Ohio State, Michigan State, Rose Bowl. And I think that
those anchors help keep your team at least with a goal,

(26:02):
with your mindset set on something. I think what Michigan
State is experiencing right now is a guy who doesn't
quite understand the culture, doesn't quite know what to speak.
He's not really anchoring them to anything. I don't think
that Michigan State is really getting fired up for anything
right now. But what it's just they just seem whistless.
So it's like, where's their spine? Who is Michigan State
right now? And that's to be don't think that's what

(26:23):
I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (26:24):
Say what you want about rich Rodriguez. Here's what Michigan
did three years not working. Ye cut your losses really quick.
That's what happens a lot of times it's not working.
We got to move on. Okay, And I'm again, I'm
not proposing Michigan State do that. I've got another name.
And these are the three big names. I don't think
either any of those three are coming to Michigan State. Sorry, Okay,

(26:44):
I would. I would look at Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern.
I would seventeen years at Northwestern. If you can win
double digits, and he did it three or four times
at Northwestern, you should be actually use that at Michigan State.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
Okay, hear me out on this one. Go ahead.

Speaker 6 (27:04):
The coach before this one for Michigan, Michigan State, what
happened with him?

Speaker 3 (27:08):
Scandal?

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Scandal with few.

Speaker 6 (27:10):
You're about to hire another head coach who got fired
for scandal.

Speaker 2 (27:14):
Okay, but there is there's like a scandal with Brian Kelly.
I know, you didn't know. I'm just there's a scandal there. Okay,
you're right. Bobby Patrino's head scandals. He's come back. Rick
Patino had scandals, He's come back.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
True.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I agree.

Speaker 6 (27:28):
Michigan State, though, they can't handle another scandal because I
think Larry Naser was on the hills up until twenty
twenty one, and then right after that's going down, here
comes Militucker and all the stuff that they deal with.
So now that that's coming down insert.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
Good point, really good point.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
Tough. If I was on the board, you better win.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
You're gonna you're gonna put your neck on that chopping block.
You better win, and you better win with him quickly
because then that kind of stuff goes away. You're right, though,
You're one hundred percent right when you make this higher
whoever this may be. What's going to happen is people
are gonna dig Yeah, what happened here? Why wasn't he

(28:08):
successful there? Why is he available? Why is he coming here?
And then the questions arise over and over and over again.
It's the same thing with the NBA. Everyone's asking everybody JB.
Bickerstaff over the weekend, what about the NBA gambling. It's
hard to get away from that. With a guy like
Pat Fitzgerald, You're right, that would be hard for people
to not ask the question about the hazing incident that

(28:31):
even though it was three years ago. Yeah, last coach.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
The gambling, that's interesting gambling aspect of the game.

Speaker 6 (28:38):
And we always say, well, I know you're you're a man,
knows this thing. When it first happened, it's like, oh, shoot,
you let the flood gets in. Now you have his gambling,
you have all his accusations certain players, and then you
look at all these different video footage, and a lot
of video footage is and it means nothing. It's just
anybody can slay the video in a certain way to
make it a little.

Speaker 3 (28:58):
Like oh gotcha.

Speaker 6 (28:59):
With that being said, now I can't I can't even
watch like every single player life.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
Yeah, somebody do something there? Wait, was that something there.
Hold on, why did the coach make them play?

Speaker 2 (29:11):
Why did they pull that picture after eighty nine pitches?
Why did they put why they why that guy's on
a heater right now? He's nothing personal. Run you're gonna
get him a break when your team just got to
the three down thirteen. I don't think so. Not a
good idea.

Speaker 6 (29:23):
He mentioned basketball, as you said, last week has already
had the dining heathing. Yeah, so this happens to a
sport we already know is for lack of a better word,
he's talking more stuff there.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
There's what happened. Now here's what the media does.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
The media good players, they'll get coaches and they'll give
good sound bites. Jaylen Brown gave a great SoundBite over
the weekend. And then we're gonna how do we keep
the story alive? This is what happens in the media.
I mean, it's not unique to sports or or the
NBA or anything. Now what I got an idea, Let's
go get a former mob boss of the Gambino company
family and talk to them and do an interview with them.

(29:57):
Who that'll hit social media? Now that is everywhere.

Speaker 6 (30:01):
It's go get the guys from Boston with Saint John's
that was going on. That player was his name. He
came and spoke to us. The gambling with the Fresno State.
He's from Boston, got drafted by the Celtics.

Speaker 2 (30:12):
I forget, Oh what was his name?

Speaker 3 (30:14):
He was?

Speaker 6 (30:15):
He was he was elected, got drafted, bost was from Boston,
went anyway, but he came and spoke to us. When
I played with Seattle Seahawks teams something like gambling and
all this kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
It's like twenty twelve.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
It's in one of your out the next. I mean,
I'm sorry. I know they all. It's well intentioned, and
it's good that the leagues do that, okay, but I
feel sometimes the leagues do it just because they got
a couple of the rests Magic Johnson when he was
with HIV. Hey, guys, just want you to know, here's
what happened. Don't do it phone call. Why is the

(30:48):
boss waiting outside the hotel? I'll tell you why. Because
he's up there with six hookers.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
That's why.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
That's what happened. That seriously, that's what happens. Okay, put
a whole the watch. Okay, we're gonna be a little late. Suddenly,
he's a d n P. Why not he's tired. It's
it's called what load?

Speaker 7 (31:09):
He loan man, oh Man, Bray has left the set.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Bray has left the set.

Speaker 6 (31:21):
Did you just proceed to use you know what? Won't repeat?
You gotta go back and watch.

Speaker 8 (31:26):
We are.

Speaker 2 (31:28):

(36:56):
Monday through Friday two till four here on Woodward Sports
all always encourage the chats to light it up and
punch that like button too if you can for us.
So we talked a little bit about football. What was
your what was your overall take from the week that
was the National Football League this past week. There's a

(37:17):
lot of different storylines there.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
Well, just the fact that the NFL is still it's open.

Speaker 6 (37:23):
It's a lot of periods of the season it's open league,
especially in AFC as really not well there's only a
couple of decent teams in AFC that I would pick
from what is what I'm saying, So they're a little
bit open. And then on the FC side, things. I
think things are still wide open. Obviously, Green Bay played
really good last night, so there'll be something considered. Also,
they're still ahead of us by half a game at

(37:44):
least in the division, So water finding its level a
little bit. As it relates to players, I think the
players that are gonna be the players at the end
are standing up. You see what Jonathan Taylor was able
to do. You see Michael Parsons, you see John excuse me,
Miles Garret. Yeah, in terms of what he was doing,
Jordan Love. He pull in a great performance last night.

(38:04):
They're gonna need that out of him, so we can
talk in depth about that.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Drake May put on a hell of a perform.

Speaker 6 (38:09):
Drake May is showing you he's like, Drake May is
a couple of players away from being something special, and
he already is showing you that with his consistent play.
That's what a young guy when you see the consistent play.
And I like the fact that you know, Rabel lets
him play. Yeah, Rabel allows him to fail in spots.
When I watch him, I don't see a guy. I
don't feel like he's being handicapped. He's having some success,

(38:30):
but we're like I see a guy's out there trying
to get it, and they're already taking the training a
little off of him.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
Somebody somebody said today, Sorry, sorry to interrupt. Somebody said earlier,
early today, I wanted your thoughts on this. Aaron Glenn
got his first win, and you and I are Aaron happy,
didn't expect it, but happy for him to do that.
Had to come back from doing it to do it.
Offense looked really good.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
I was.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
I know he's an Ohio State guy, but I was
really happy for Justin Fields. I really was, because he
shared an awful lot after the game, in case people
missed it. He shared about how challenging it's been, how
difficult it's been when you have an owner who does
and says as stupid things, is what he Johnson said
about his quarterback. I was really happy for Justin Fields.

(39:16):
Doesn't mean I think he's a Pro Bowl or I'm
just really happy for him. But you and I were
talking earlier. The Miles Garrett situation is an interesting one.
Five sacks in Cleveland's loss, they lose by nineteen He's
the first player in history to have that many sacks
and lose by more than three points in the game

(39:37):
in which he had those sacks, and I couldn't help,
but wonder and I think he's a great player, but
I couldn't help. But wonder, man, in February, you were
calling for a trade. You wanted out, And anytime I
watched Cleveland play, I think of this guy because he
had some really challenging years there. He could have left.

(39:58):
Is it money? If he wants to win, why did
he stay in Cleveland? Help me with that.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
Oh, he's still inunder contract. And one thing about the NFL.

Speaker 6 (40:08):
NFL, they're not gonna do you any favors, you know,
and the NBA and other sports will still do favors,
show love, put you in positions to be able to
continuously get that bag. NFL's not so much like so
if Miles Garrett, you know, would to put the pressure
on those guys this year, but he did initially, Uh
to get traded. They're not gonna trade him. Then what

(40:30):
am I gonna play with no contract? And they'll hope
he gets you to the end of the year. And
then I put put my work out there on the
field and somebody picks me up. Somebody says, oh, we
need that talent on that team. What if you get injured?
You know, what does that contract look like if Miles
Garrett would have played this year not signing Rito towards
ACL broke his leg, did something crazy at the beginning,
and what does that contract look like in the off season.

(40:51):
So it's a it's a tough situation, you know, and
also too, what do we always say.

Speaker 3 (40:56):
A guy is holding out?

Speaker 6 (40:57):
The guy is on his contract but still has a
year left and he wants more money.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
Oh why is this guy holding out? This guy's being selfish,
This guy's being that.

Speaker 6 (41:05):
So I think some of that gets into your ear
and then when you offer that type.

Speaker 3 (41:09):
Of money, we can figure it out. Yeah, we can
figure it out for that type of money.

Speaker 2 (41:14):
But he shouldn't be surprised the way that organization is run.
He shouldn't be surprised.

Speaker 6 (41:18):
You're never gonna achieve anything with playing for the Cleveland Browns,
Like until they completely completely change who they are, you're
not gonna win a championships.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
Amazing How some franches are like that, Like we lived
with one right, the Lions had been like that and
in a business, Yeah, the Raiders are like that now
and they didn't used to be that way. It's amazing
to me how business people who make billions of dollars

(41:48):
seem to fall into the same trap doing the same
stupid thing with their bait with their sports teams, over
and over and over again.

Speaker 6 (41:55):
Sports still gets puts in that sport still gets put
in that weird space sometimes where the individuals that own
these teams are business minded. They own companies. There CEOs,
the this, that and the third. They look at the business.
Excuse they look at football and a business. They look
at sports like a business. They're not looking at it
liking Jerry Jones when he was in his right round
his right mind as Bootsong Ground, this is what I

(42:18):
want to do. This is what we have to do.
We have to bring this in, this player in, We
have to bring this in excitement, We have.

Speaker 3 (42:23):
To add this.

Speaker 6 (42:23):
How we need this coach Bootsong Ground like. They're not
like that. They're just sitting back.

Speaker 2 (42:28):
And which is a Jerry Buss right. When Jerry Buss
first bought the Lakers, what did he he wanted?

Speaker 3 (42:34):
He had a vision.

Speaker 2 (42:35):
He had a vision.

Speaker 3 (42:35):
He had a vision.

Speaker 2 (42:36):
And Jerry Jones, for as much as I would like him,
had a vision. But that envision included big business deals.
Oh my gosh, the NFL is with Coke, We're going
with PEPSI. Oh my gosh, the NFL is in bed
with this partner. We're going with Nike. We're doing something
different than everybody else. Dare me to change. And for
some reason or another, maybe it's the copycat fear. Other

(43:00):
owners don't want to do that. They don't look around
their league. For as good as some teams are run,
and a copycat league that so many sports can be,
they don't look around their league and say, what are
they doing that. We're not concept an implematic.

Speaker 6 (43:15):
Because a lot of owners when they buy the team
like this isn't the passion, Like this is a tax
write off for this is just big business, or this
is a hobby.

Speaker 3 (43:22):
I've always wanted to own a team.

Speaker 6 (43:23):
I put myself in the space where I have X
amount of billions I can buy a team. Hey get
care less because what their job is. They're like, I
own the team.

Speaker 3 (43:32):
I who am I paying? Who's gonna be to coach?

Speaker 6 (43:35):
Okay pay him that I paid the coach, I paid
the coordinators. Who do you want me to draft? How
much I gotta pay him? I'm gonna do that. In
their in mind, it's done. It's like, shoot, I hired
the coach, I hired the coaches, I drafted the players,
I paid who you told me to.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
You guys figured out my job is too.

Speaker 6 (43:51):
Whatever island I'm gonna be on, or whatever my business
endeavors take me.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
The week, My job is to do that. You figure
this out. And then when I come to the games
on Sunday with.

Speaker 6 (44:00):
My aunt's rige and my jet and the G five
and a well playing as much bigger than G five.
But when I come to the game, you present me
with a product is gonna win. It's not like that.
You gotta be boots on ground. You gotta be in
the meetings. You have to know the talent. You have
to know like Shelaham when she made a decision, she's
been boots on ground. When I say that, she's been
in the meetings, She's heard the press, she's done research,

(44:23):
she's sat with the coaches, she sat with the players.
Like she taught herself and she had people teach her
on what was expected from this position? What can I
do in this position? How can I get better in
this position? What do I need to know?

Speaker 2 (44:36):
To be and I love that she's willing to ask questions.

Speaker 3 (44:40):
Now look at her team and she's.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Willing to say I don't know it all and now
the squad, and I you know what, I think, Like owners,
athletic directors need to do the same thing when they're hiring.
Oh I said this forever. I mean, and I don't
say this just because Braylen's you know, my partner. I
say this in all honesty. If I'm the athletic director,
I'm bringing in a core group of guys who follow

(45:06):
the sport and who can speak from a student athlete standpoint,
and bring them in for part of the conversation the
interviewing process with a coach, you're going to ask different
questions than an athletic director is going to ask. You.
Pick whoever, okay, pick some other some other former players,

(45:26):
you know, whether it be Desmond Howard who's in the
media and watches a lot of college football, John Jansen,
who calls Michigan football and watches a lot of football.
What would be the harm in bringing Brian Greasy? What
would be the harm would bring of bringing them in
and having them part of the interview process. Not that
I'm going to use whoever you say. Whatever Braylan says,

(45:47):
I'm going to do it right, but just to get
a different perspective, I think it's really important.

Speaker 3 (45:52):
I agree, but it's the ego at the end of
I not.

Speaker 6 (45:55):
Athletic directors have put themselves in position now where it's
like they are the guys nless you have a head
coach that is Jim Harbaugh, is Nick Saban, that is,
we don't even have any left. Oh, Georgia Kirby Smart,
Kirby smart if you unless you have one of those,
the guys a D. Because the guy the AD is
hiring your football coach, he's hiring your basketball coach. He's

(46:17):
having the conversation with the brands and the sponsors and
all that stuff. He puts himself in a position to
where when you look at national championships, well, the a
D A lot of times unless you have those, he's
got you think about He's the guy you think about it.
And that's what ads want. They don't want you to
come in the room and muddy up the waters. And
now you have to say, well, you know, Braylan helped

(46:38):
me pick this, or Braylan was in the room when
we picked such and such, because now Braylan gets a
little bit of credit, whether it's a tenth or whatever,
Braylan gets credit.

Speaker 3 (46:46):
They want all the credit. I hired Harball, I hired
Juwan J. Howard. I mean, I hired Well after You're one.
It looked good. But I hired dust he May. Yeah,
I was the one that said, all right, Red Bearnson
is out.

Speaker 2 (47:04):
Insert that's Mel Pearson that didn't work out. To your point,
Scott Woodward is a pretty good example of that. Now,
if I said that name, a lot of people be like,
who the hell is that? He's the athletic director at LSU,
And they're probably going, oh my gosh. He hired Brian Kelly, Well,
then he should be on the hot seat. He also

(47:24):
hired jimbo Fisher at Texas A and M and allowed
the seventy million dollar buyout. The Brian Kelly buy out
is roughly fifty four million dollars. Think about that. He's
responsible for two men with almost one hundred and twenty
million dollars worth of money for those two schools combined.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
I would say he doesn't know what he's doing.

Speaker 2 (47:47):
It sure seems like that, doesn't it Like if you want.
If you miss on a coach, that's one thing, but
missing on the financial package of things that's dangerous too.

Speaker 3 (47:57):
And do any back to back and back to back
different schools, but still true, but like big.

Speaker 6 (48:02):
Institutions, Yeah, because I guarantee Texas A and M and
I guarantee when he leaves now he's out of LSU.

Speaker 3 (48:09):
Both those ideas have a conversations like, man, why you
mean to tell me? Why you mean to tell me?

Speaker 2 (48:13):
Yeah, And he didn't bring Mikelico in. Mike Elko came
in after he was gone from Texas A and M.
Now you're going to give him the responsibility of hiring
another coach after that type of I know it might
be a small track record, And I know he's hired
other coaches. He's hired baseball coaches that's helped them win
the national championship, track coaches that doesn't. But still we

(48:34):
all know where a big school's bread is buttered. It's
football that's the most important. Go ahead and brag about
the other national championships. I would too if I'm athletic director.
But deep down inside, if I want to make money
and if I want to bring people in and I
want to read businesses in and nil money in. I
need a really good football program.

Speaker 6 (48:54):
Take yourself back to that, to the the pet rally
that they had, and imagine that you're on the body
that hired Brian Kelly and you're sitting in an auditorium,
or maybe you weren't there, maybe you're watching from afar
and you hear him with the fake accent. I know
everybody had to be like.

Speaker 3 (49:11):
Damn we had because something like that. Even though it's
it's funny, it's cute, it really is.

Speaker 6 (49:19):
And when you see somebody faking accent to who they've
been for forty years and coaching landscape, I didn't.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
I didn't hire Brian Kelly for this.

Speaker 2 (49:26):
I know and he does that or the dance.

Speaker 3 (49:29):
Instantly knew.

Speaker 2 (49:33):
About that, so stupid.

Speaker 3 (49:35):
There's one thing to be authentic. There's nothing to be cringy.

Speaker 2 (49:37):
Oh we've seen it, just not in sports. We've seen
it in politics where people are changing their actsets all
the time. And I look at him and go, who
buys this stuff? But Brian Kelly's on stage and somebody
you know, he look, he's an older dude. So I
don't know why you feel like I've got to be
next to Braylan and do some type of dance.

Speaker 3 (49:56):
Can't.

Speaker 2 (49:56):
I just can't. I just give it to the player.
Why do I have to be out there? Right? And
they say to you, hey, do me a favor. Pretend
like you're dancing to this song and he does John
Travolta in pulp fiction and not a good look.

Speaker 3 (50:10):
But it's also too.

Speaker 6 (50:10):
That's the landscape that the older coaches found himself in
trying to figure out and dive through it, like do
I still have because I mean, you don't have to
do this stuff per se, but a lot of the
coaches do. A lot of institutions do a lot of
you're looking to connect with these younger players, they tend
to do that. But the Brian Kelly situation was, you
can tell. You can tell first time you see someone. Well,

(50:34):
unless you were from Detroit and you saw Dan Campbellen,
you were like, wait, this guy's gonna be terrible jokes
on you. Yeah, but you you can tell the energy though,
because I remember watching the Brian Kelly I saw, I
said he's not gonna have success. I said, it's just
not gonna work like I thought he would before I
saw that, And I said this fake accent. Meanwhile, first
time I saw Jim Trussell and his his PEP rally

(50:55):
down in Ohio State at the basketball game in January February,
and they just hired him, and legitimately, at the end
of that conversation, he said, Oh, don't worry, we will
beat that team up north.

Speaker 2 (51:07):
You'll be happy with your team in sixty days.

Speaker 6 (51:09):
There we go that right there. I was like, oh shoot.
I was like, oh shoot. I was like, because they
got a guy that understands it. That's why the other
guy got fired. It's like that that could bring players
together and better get that boy, and boy did it
ever outside of the you know, the situation in eleven,
he's still there. But I could watch that as a

(51:30):
because I was I was still a senior in high school.
I'm watching like, yeah, it's gonna be interested in four years.
But you showed the energy through that it was and
it was because it was authentic, you know, bry That just.

Speaker 7 (51:43):
Got me thinking when I saw sheth doing the dancing
and everything, because this one's a different case.

Speaker 2 (51:49):
Get that out of your mind. It's a bad look.

Speaker 7 (51:52):
This isn't a coach trying to make a name for himself.
This was Brian Kelly. What do you do, Brake, If
it's one of those coaches walking into your living room,
one of the ones with the name walking into your
living room, and they're the ones and they're at recruiting
parties and such. If they're the ones doing this stance,
what are you doing? It's one of those guys.

Speaker 8 (52:12):
Bro.

Speaker 6 (52:12):
If I'm a parent, then I realize, but you know,
it's a great question. If I'm a parent, then I realize,
you know what this this error has passed him by.

Speaker 3 (52:22):
Like if you have to do if you have to
do things where.

Speaker 6 (52:25):
This isn't who you are, it looks awkward, it's not
who you are, then I'm not going there. Because this
coach doesn't understand his new landscape. I feel bad for him,
but I'm not about to let my son go up
there and get ruined, Like I'm just not. So I'm
going to send him somewhere else with somebody that can connect,
because if.

Speaker 3 (52:41):
You have to do cringy things in order to stay
it was cringey. The whole thing is cringy. Just like
like I'm like, yo, reason earlier.

Speaker 6 (52:54):
Because you beat Alabama, you're one I think you're right.
He beat Nick Saban. You're one.

Speaker 3 (52:58):
That's what Jay Daniels, that's why.

Speaker 6 (53:00):
And he had Jayden Dn's good cub. Yeah, oohat great
car and that's all.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
Yeah, which I look. I mean part of coaching is recruiting,
and I get it. Some team. It's funny how sometimes
in an argument we'll say, yeah, but he won with
his players, or if you lose, it's like, oh my god,
you've got somebody else's players. You know, you still have
to coach him. You still have to put him in
the it's great that they have that much talent, and

(53:27):
it's great that you inherited him. You still have to
get him to perform. They still have to buy into
who you are. Sometimes I think it'd be more difficult
to coach another play another coach's recruits, Okay, because he's
not in. My bigger problem with Brian Kelly is he's
coming off You know, how many years at Notre Dame.
How many years did he spend at Notre Dame? Ten, twelve, ten? Okay,

(53:52):
and he won a lot. He was one hundred and
thirteen and forty at Notre Dame, and he chose to
leave because he felt like how do I win a
national championship? I gotta go to an SEC school. Okay,
I don't think he's alone in that regard, however, Oh
go ahead.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
Black of War. He basically I gotta go cheat.

Speaker 2 (54:09):
There you go. Even with the ironic part of that
is that he took Notre Dame to a national championship.
I mean, they have pisponed, but they still he took
them there. The interesting thing is, like Kuley says, he
was established. You don't have to reinvent yourself. This is
who I am. This is who you hired me. You
know what do I have to re establish myself for?

(54:32):
Just the reason you hired me is because I'm a
good coach and he is. He's a good coach. I
don't like the inauthentic bull crap that he pulled when
he first went or arrived at LSU in twenty twenty
two either, But he's a good football coach, and it's
it's hard to argue that he's not a likable football coach.
And there is a difference. Don't you think a likable

(54:53):
football coach you don't win at Grand Valley, where you
won I think two national championships. I know it's de
but there's still football players. You still got to go
get them, all right, still gotta beat some good teams.
You don't win at Central Michigan. You don't win at
Cincinnati and go undefeated and then win it Notre Dame
and have that type of winning percentage if you don't
know what the hell you're doing. I used to make

(55:14):
that argument all the time. So a lot of my
friends who are spartans, they'll say, Jim Harball is not
that good of a coach. I said, hold on a second,
you may not like him, and that's okay, because he's
a different cat. You don't take a team to a
Super Bowl. You don't go to an NFC Championship game
on top of that and be a bad coach. You
don't win at Stanford, you don't win at San Diego. Sorry,
you're a good football coach.

Speaker 3 (55:35):
At Michigan State too. You bring that up.

Speaker 6 (55:38):
They're replacing who's the best Michigan State coach of all time,
Mark denche Antonio, and that's who they're replacing. Yeah, that's
I think that's kind of the elephant in the room
in that situation, Like it's tough, miss just look at Michigan, Like,
Michigan's replacing Lloyd Carr and here's okay, we got it.

Speaker 3 (55:55):
Here's a panic situation. Shoot, all right, let's do something new.

Speaker 6 (55:58):
Let's go get that guy down there in West Virginia's
doing all the spread offense. He's got these running quarterbacks.
Let's do that cool stuff. They were onto something. It's
not necessarily made the right situation, but they were on something.
And then you go from that. Now it's like, well
that didn't work. Now what I gotta do. I gotta
go somewhere that looks like home in sirt. Brady Hope
you're being Brady Holcom love Brady. He's not the right

(56:18):
guy for the job. And then you get Jim Harbaugh.
Then you have to wait that process out seven years.
So Michigan knows what it is when you replace one
of those guys, replacing coach D.

Speaker 3 (56:30):
I hear how the players talk about Coach D.

Speaker 6 (56:32):
Like when I was up there, do Ronald McDonald house
a couple of those players like Jalen watch Jackson the
infamous trouble with the snap. He was talking about Coach D.
Javon Ringer was up there talking about Coach D. The
way and wish they feel about him. That's more than
just a coach.

Speaker 2 (56:46):
How you feel about your coach, But it's.

Speaker 6 (56:48):
An identity, like for ten or so years thirty Harvard
long coach D was there twelve years or so. The
identity in East Lands sing, this is coach D. It
wasn't Michigan State, it's coach D. So I think it's
going to take them a while.

Speaker 3 (57:01):
It's tough.

Speaker 6 (57:03):
You go through your fair share of frogs when you
finished the legend.

Speaker 2 (57:09):
I would remind people before they get too judgmental about
certain coaches wherever it may be. Mark Dantonio is the
best coach in Michigan State history. He was a one
game above five hundred at Cincinnati. He spent three years
with the Bearcats, and he blessed you. He was eighteen
and seventeen, and when Michigan State said had a press

(57:31):
conference that our new head coach is Mark d Antonio,
I would venture to guess most Michigan State fans did
not know who he was. And when they looked at
his resume, they're like, uh, what what are we doing?
Are you serious? And in the end they're pretty happy
about it. I think there was a lot of pushback
from when people at Michigan elevated Lloyd.

Speaker 3 (57:50):
Carr was a guy.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
Yeah, yeah, it was a guy.

Speaker 3 (57:53):
Lloyd was just secondary guy. Yeah, if you will.

Speaker 2 (57:56):
And I love Gary Muller. I thought he got a
bad deal. I thought he was a really good coach.
And when he came to the Lions. I remember Stephen Boyd,
who was a linebacker played at BC, was a callible
linebacker with the Lions, told me he's one of the
best coaches I've ever had, bar none. And he would
run through a wall for him. But there's certain reputations

(58:18):
what they talked about.

Speaker 6 (58:18):
He had that feel remember like old school coaches, like
they had the old school field, like the Bow, like
the Lloyd, the Lou Holts, the Bobby Bow. And he
did a deal where it was all the living Michigan coaches.
This has been my second year Michigan, like sophomore year,
sophomore summer, maybe going into junior year or junior going
senior anyway, like all the coaches spoke at Cliff Kinge.

Speaker 3 (58:41):
So Bump was.

Speaker 6 (58:41):
Still you know, Bump was with us, It was Lloyd,
and it was Bow was still there. Bow died in
two thousand and six. So Bowl was still there, Moler
was still there. But when Moler got to talk, you know,
they hadn't seen Moler in Michigan very long time, so
everybody was welcoming when he spoke.

Speaker 3 (58:58):
I was like, oh, yeah, ran through the wolf, absolutely
what he absolutely would.

Speaker 2 (59:03):
He was one of the really I was fortunate and
I covered him while he was on the Lion's staff,
and he remembered they gave him an interim head coaching job,
and I thought it was a mistake by Matt Millan
that he didn't keep him. I thought that was his
first mistake, because the players played hard for him and
they really respected him. But I remember asking him. I

(59:23):
was fortunate I got a one on one with him
after his press conference and I said to him, I said,
what is it you learned as a head coach at
Michigan that you had to adjust from being promoted from
DC to head coach that you can now take with
you to the Lions. And he said, it's a really
good question. He said, I have to be able to
relinquish more control because offensive coordinators and defensive coordinators are

(59:49):
correct me if you think I'm wrong here, maniacal, I
mean they're in control of everything. Head coaches got so
many different things to do. You've got to let your
coordinators be coaches, and if you're a coordinat get bumped up.
It's hard to let some of that lack of a
better word power and decision making.

Speaker 3 (01:00:05):
Go oh saying.

Speaker 6 (01:00:06):
But that's where you see the head coaches that go
from being really good coordinators or great dare i say
coordinators to struggling at the head coaching position because they
have to learn how to micromanage because you're no longer
really that's not your thing, like.

Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
You can get back to it.

Speaker 6 (01:00:21):
Sean McVay, Sean Payton, Kevin O'Connell, there's some guys that
do it, Andy Reid, But it takes a second to
be able to understand both. You can't just go out
there and be a great coordinator and then all of
a sudden be a great coach and coordinator to a
good point, learn a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:00:36):
You notice all those guys he just mentioned, offensive minded
guys number one but number two, all calling the place,
all still calling the place for their team. So it's
hard to relinquish that type of responsibility. Speaking of really
good assistant coaches or coordinators, We're going to get into
a rumor about one of them when we come back,
But first this from Smoothie King, who always gives us

Speaker 6 (01:05:20):

is everybody loves how Dan cambell is at the end
of games. Do your best Dan Campbell personation after a win,
give the locker room pep talk as you talk about
players of the game forty five seconds. Send it into
kool aid at woolwardsports dot com. Again, that's k O
O L A I D. Send it to woodsports dot

(01:05:41):
com for kool aid and we'll make a decision. We'll
get you in the game and get yourself a free bay.
Next actually it's this Friday, we'll be picking the winner.

Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
Can't wait to see that. That's gonna be some good stuff, man, Yeah,
we gotta we should put some of those up a Definitely,
that's gonna be fantastic. You don't necessarily have to look
like him, but you gotta sound like it. You gotta
have the high energy, right. Yeah, it's tough to do both.
So we went to a lot of tailgates on Saturday.
My wife brought banana bread with chocolate chips in it
and brownies. I brought Buddy's Pizza. Now I'm not gonna lie.

(01:06:15):
Yeah I did with although her brownies are pretty good.
As you guys can attest, I'm gonna admit it. I
did eat a lot of the pizza, but it's the
thought that counts, I hope. And Buddy's Pizza the original
homestyle Detroit homestyle pizza. You can't go wrong. They've been
doing it since nineteen forty six, serving it at their
twenty two locations throughout the state of Michigan. If you

(01:06:36):
need to find a location, go to Buddyessizza dot com
and right now do what I did. Ten percent off
your entire order by using ten meal. Use that promo
code ten meal and you'll get ten percent off Buddiespizza
and Buddiespizza dot Com and we bet Yeah. Thanks a
lot for joining us in the chat. We really appreciate it.

(01:06:58):
We smashed that like button. As kool A likes to say, hey,
and we would ask you to, you know, express anything
that you choose of anything that we've talked about or
maybe something that we haven't talked about kool aid. It'll
make sure that we get that on. And he'll also
give us any breaking news that may happen, like not
NFL trade. We'll get to that here in a minute.

Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 7 (01:07:18):
Just just one super chat that did pop up here
sideless note that that's barn Actually it's in the chat.

Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
Five dollars. Thank you for the super chat this, Poy says,
you remind me.

Speaker 7 (01:07:29):
You reminded me of when Dan Campbell became the interim
head coach of the Dolphins. I bet the Dolphins are
kicking themselves for letting him go.

Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
Ye, well, that's tough, didn't we have Do we have
that picture up last week when we were talking about it.
He was on that staff. Ben Johnson was on that staff,
and there was one other well known coach now who
was on that staff and uh.

Speaker 3 (01:07:55):
His Dolphins staff. Huh the Dolphins, Yeah, the Dolphins at
twenty seventeen.

Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
Yeah, his name escapes me now. Gosh, darn it. We
just talked about it last week, But yeah, the Dolphins
could have had any of them and chose not to.
I mean, it's easy to sit back and say, why
wouldn't you have done that?

Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
But oh, is it Liam going?

Speaker 8 (01:08:14):
Zach Taylor was on there?

Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
Yeah, it wasn't Zach Taylor.

Speaker 3 (01:08:19):
I think it was Flores. Broder in the chest said Flores, Yeah,
it might have been to the rescue.

Speaker 2 (01:08:25):
Appreciate you very much, he must be, yeah, and he yeah,
you got the Dodgers, you got the Blue Jays. Broder anyway,
good stuff real quick. Rams acquired Roger McCreery from the
Titans for a draft pick, so he's at the end
of his contract, which is fine. You're sharing something up.

(01:08:48):
Do you anticipate the Lions making a move? November four
is the trade deadline. Do you anticipate the Lions making
a move? No, you don't.

Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
No, I do not.

Speaker 6 (01:08:58):
I don't even play this song and dance this year.
I do not anticipate them making moves because they don't
know hesitation. The only reason why they made moves last
year is because a Hunchesson was hurt, so they went
on and the guys and Darius Smith.

Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
I don't expect them to make it.

Speaker 6 (01:09:10):
They have told us in every step of the way,
whether it was January, February, March, April, May season.

Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
We like the guys we have. We're good where we're at.

Speaker 6 (01:09:21):
Like especially if you have Detroit Lions and you watch
the performance, this is how they operate. They're gonna watch
this performance that they had against the excuse me, the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
Oh man, we're good. We like our defensive line, like
offensive line. We'll short up here or there.

Speaker 6 (01:09:37):
Secondary, we'll get some guys back, but at least look
at the depth that we have.

Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
Tyrius Whiteside on this player.

Speaker 6 (01:09:43):
So I think they won't make a move. They like
where they're at, and you just have to accept that
and walk.

Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
And that's that's interesting. Do you think how do you
think that would be received by the fan base?

Speaker 8 (01:09:54):
Not good?

Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Not good. I don't think it would matter if I
don't think it matters to the fan base, right, I
don't either, because I think they I think they spent
the beginning of the season going into the season, and
then after the first game, we gotta get a guy,
we gotta get a guy, We gotta get a guy,
we gotta get a guy, and then you look up
and your four excuse me, you're five and two, your

(01:10:16):
second in the division, second in the NFC. You like
where you're at. You believe in the office.

Speaker 6 (01:10:21):
The coordinators have put their mark on this team. Uh,
I don't think the fan base will care as much.

Speaker 2 (01:10:27):
I think you're right. Yeah, because they're gonna beat Minnesota,
They're gonna beat Washington, especially Daniels. Then you gotta go
to Philadelphia. And by the way, so that trade deadline
is after the Mansota game, as we can all do
because Friday is Halloween. Okay, we'll have a really fun
showing on Friday. Uh. Well, this is ugly enough for people.

(01:10:47):
So Mike, my guess is my guess is you have
to Obviously you have to do it. After the Minnesota game,
they're gonna be six and two. And to Braylan's point,
they have gone and they've signed guys off practice squads
I mentioned, they've proven that they've got some guys who
can come in and do the job that they feel
comfortable with. Is it good enough to beat certain teams?

(01:11:09):
That's a good question. Ryan and I were discussing this.
If I asked you the five teams today who are
better or at least a threat to the Lions in
the NFL, not the NFC, but the NFL. Who would
those five teams be and they don't have to necessarily
be in order? Who would the five teams be that
are do you think threaten just the NFL, just the NFL,

(01:11:34):
the National Football Now? In fairness to Braylan, he has
said for three to four weeks Kansas City.

Speaker 3 (01:11:45):
For sure.

Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
He's been bully on Kansas City where I jumped off
and I picked the Chargers before. Idiot. He has said
Kansas City. So I would guess Kansas City's in that
discussion for you.

Speaker 6 (01:11:59):
Yeah, I'd say there's only two teams in the AFC. Okay,
because I'm still I'm still not buying the Broncos. I'm
not buying them. To hear me out, I'm not. I'm
buying them in since of being a playoffs team. I'm
buying them that they are a good team, They're well coached.
May not like him, but he can coach understood. I
buy that aspect. In terms of beating the Lions, No way,

(01:12:20):
hells that give me the Indianapolis coach and give me
the Kandasity Chiefs out of the AFC. That is it,
nor other teams in the AFC as it relates to
the NFC.

Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
So not New England, just so New England's like, Drake
May is really good. Drake May is gonna be special
with the people in Foxborough. I know you guys like
who we finally got us one?

Speaker 1 (01:12:41):
You do?

Speaker 6 (01:12:42):
You guys are still some players away from actually beating
the Lions in the playoff team, from beating from really
contending from second to conference semi with the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (01:12:50):
Thank you. Because we didn't say playoff team. We didn't
say who you're impressed with because you are impressed with
new We said that can win it all. So you
got two in the AFC.

Speaker 6 (01:13:01):
Like the coach, like Jonathan Taylor when he was doing it,
finally got Finally a running back from Wisconsin has taken
the Wisconsin game and put it in the NFL. Kudos
to you because they got a long list of two
thousand yard rushers and a long list of guys that
didn't do it in the NFL. Kudos those two NFC
Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers.

Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
I still don't like the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
Wow, I would not you You've said that for about
three weeks too.

Speaker 3 (01:13:32):
Those are four teams.

Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
Okay, so you've only got four. You didn't mention Seattle either,
which is interesting. Okay, you're one of your old teams,
kool Aid. Give me the five if you can name five.

Speaker 6 (01:13:43):
Because I'm thinking of actually beating I'm not thinking about
a team that I get it. I don't think about
a team that can give you a good game. There's
about seven teams that get the Lions.

Speaker 3 (01:13:51):
Maybe eight. Lion's a good game.

Speaker 6 (01:13:53):
But to actually I think can finish the deal, not Seattle,
not the forty nine.

Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Okay, but what about the Bucks? Because you and I
have been on the Bucks bandwagon since before the season
even began. Because I'm still I'm still in that camp.

Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
I still love the Bucks. I do.

Speaker 6 (01:14:09):
I still love bakering what he's doing. Those injuries, I'm
looking at them like I looked at the Lions last year. Sure,
those injuries are going to catch.

Speaker 3 (01:14:17):
Up with them. And also too, I think they know.

Speaker 6 (01:14:20):
I think they found something in that game against Baker.
They unlocked something defensively into how to bother him and
how to worry him. I no longer worry about the
tap Bay Buccaneers because I think big lean in the
middle like it pushes Baker out of the pocket, like
he can't do all the sexy cute things he does.

Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
They gets those yards.

Speaker 6 (01:14:39):
I don't think that was just Mike Evans being hurt
and Megabuka having not a good game because he was
also kind of dinged up and Chris gott.

Speaker 3 (01:14:46):
Will not be in there.

Speaker 6 (01:14:47):
I think that was something Lions discovered about Baker's game,
So I take them off.

Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
It's those fourteens.

Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
Four teams.

Speaker 3 (01:14:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:14:54):
For me, it's the championship pedigree teams. It's the Kansas
City Chiefs in the AFC, and in the NFC it
is the Eagles, and it is the Rams. I think
when you get to the playoffs sometimes those types of
teams are the squads that just I don't know, they
have that extra gear, they understand how to give that
like what it takes to get there. So I don't know.

(01:15:15):
Those are the teams to me that I'm not worried about.
But those are the ones that I do believe, like
the criteria of it, can they beat the Lions.

Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
Those are the ones.

Speaker 6 (01:15:22):
I think the Rams are a special team because we
already know what they're going to be on offense, Like
legitimately one year after the Super Bowl and f those picks,
Let's need the whole nine yard and he kind of
went off the rails. Quarterback was hurt. A bunch of
people were hurt. Took them a second. They figured it
out once they figured it out. That offense is rocking.

Speaker 3 (01:15:39):
And roll and that offense has more than enough.

Speaker 6 (01:15:42):
The offense is a leader, especially when you know who
plays it was the defensive side of the ball. How
do you react losing Aaron Donald Well, three first round
draft picks in a row.

Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
Now those draft picks are playing at a high level.

Speaker 6 (01:15:54):
Drow versus will be Defensive Player of the Year within
the next three fourth season.

Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
Promise you that I want.

Speaker 6 (01:16:00):
And then they're just continued to go on getting another
DV Two weeks ago, we watched that game again when
they lost to the Rams, and we said, this is
a damn good team. That secondary is going to get
a beat. They know that too. They saw that too,
and they've gotten better than they added.

Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
And they've got a quarterback who can absolutely spin it
even at age thirty seven, with two dynamic wide receivers
and two tight ends that can get in there and
make them play.

Speaker 6 (01:16:21):
Two running backs one yeah, one had a couple of
fumbles early in the year.

Speaker 3 (01:16:25):
Actually both did I think they've shored that up.

Speaker 6 (01:16:27):
One's the physical guy, Blake Corn And then you know what,
Kyra Williams is so so.

Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
You named four kool Aid named only three. That's interesting
you've done or you got another one. I don't want
to cut you off. I mean.

Speaker 7 (01:16:40):
No, it's just those squads that have that championship pedigree
to me, that I that I'm.

Speaker 2 (01:16:44):
Really caring about. Yeah, but you didn't say Philadelphia, did
you know?

Speaker 3 (01:16:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
Yeah, get I'm sorry. Okay, Ryan, how about you?

Speaker 8 (01:16:52):
I would go Rams Chiefs, And I mean you have
to put the Eagles in there. They haven't won or
they won the Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
Fair.

Speaker 8 (01:17:00):
I mean, I like Davontae Smith. He helps my fantasy
football team out pretty well. Chasing chef face.

Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
It always comes back to fantasy football. I mean, it's incredible,
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:17:15):
I'm six and two now, I'm I'm just saying.

Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
I just lost last weekend. I'm just saying that I.

Speaker 6 (01:17:20):
Was so pissed because legitimately, Joe I have mass Stafford.

Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
I have mass Stafford.

Speaker 6 (01:17:26):
Lamar Jackson my starter he got he got deemed up,
took him out doing well with Stafford.

Speaker 3 (01:17:31):
Then Lamar said he was. They said he was.

Speaker 6 (01:17:33):
Gonna play this week, so I said, cool, I'm fine.
Find out the night before he's out. So I had
to go hire Joe Flacco, which means I had to
get rid of my kicker, who is Jake Bates, because
I had picked up mixed fears, I mean from Cincinnati fall.
Story short, I picked up Joe Flock and got myself
a win this week, barely because.

Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
I have to.

Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
That's a general man.

Speaker 3 (01:17:54):
He took a craft for your services, sir.

Speaker 2 (01:17:59):
He is break Here is Trey mcfred.

Speaker 6 (01:18:04):
That's the one thing about the Green Bay Packers they
bought out.

Speaker 3 (01:18:09):
Like they're definitely a threat for sure.

Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
For sure, you picked him to win the division.

Speaker 6 (01:18:14):
I did one thing I like about help though for
the Lions. You put two man bracket on Tucker crab
inspy him. They they don't have the number one wide
receiver right now to beat you. Romeo Dobbs is his
favorite target. Romeo is not an alman Ron Saint Brown.
He's not a number one wide out to where you
fear they're still trying to figure Golden out.

Speaker 3 (01:18:34):
They got Christian back then he looked good, like.

Speaker 6 (01:18:37):
But you take Tucker out because who didn't run the
ball well yesterday?

Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
Who hasn't necessarily run the ball well the season.

Speaker 2 (01:18:45):
I'm more impressed with their defense probably than anything else.

Speaker 3 (01:18:47):
And the defense and I got nothing to say about that.

Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
Yeah, that was pretty pretty impressive stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:18:52):
Are they the best won two punch Rashean and.

Speaker 2 (01:18:56):
Michael well Houston? Yeah, probably they are. They're probably the
best one two punch Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
This week San Francisco.

Speaker 2 (01:19:08):
Yeah, yeah, big time. That's interesting. Okay, so Ryan, you had.

Speaker 8 (01:19:12):
And then I would I'd put the Packers in there,
but I didn't want to steal your thunder, So no.

Speaker 2 (01:19:16):
That's a good thunders steal away. I would for me,
absolutely the Packers. I'm a big believer in respecting what
somebody has done. But you know, people always talk about
the eye test, which is one of those phrases I
hate because I always say, whose eyes His eyes watching
football are how of a lot better than my eyes
watching football? But watching Philadelphia does not look comfortable to

(01:19:40):
me right now, although they looked really impressive yesterday without
Aj Brown, who stinks on my fantasy team, But I
would say I would say Green Bay, Tampa and the
Rams in the NFC. I'm not going with Kansas City now,
I know that's controversial, but they still have to play
Denver a couple of times. That'll be interesting. It's not

(01:20:02):
that I'm buying into Denver and I'm not buying into
Buffalo either, because Buffalo's defense stinks. But at some yeah,
I mean there's something going on there at some point,
at some point we have to look at Indianapolis and say,
you know what at seven and one and the way
they're beating teams running the ball, taking care of the

(01:20:24):
football when you're throwing the ball, not trying to do
too much, punching you in the mouth defensively, I respect
the hell out of that. Those would be my teams
right now as of right now, So the Rams, the Packers.
I still believe in the Bucks, although the injuries that
Braylan has brought up as a solid point in Indianapolis,

(01:20:45):
I think the AFC is relatively weak. I like what
New England's doing. I remember before the season, I said
Matt Vrabel is going to be coach of the Year.
Now he's not going to be. Shane Steichen is with Indianapolis,
but Matt Rabel is going to be in the discussion.
They've been really good.

Speaker 7 (01:21:02):
Cool now, you know, and your your pick of the Packers,
and I know Ryan is you don't believing in them somewhat.

Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
I see the Chat is a little bit split.

Speaker 7 (01:21:10):
Some people believe they're almost like, you know, another NFC
version of the Dallas Cowboys. So have some pretty regular season,
but the postseason they're probably gonna flame it. I say,
brought her, you don't believe in them, but we got
dana O'shanna. And the Chadlo says that he believes the
Packers are a problem too. I only see them losing
on Thanksgiving and that's about it. Maybe the Eagles can

(01:21:30):
beat them. So it's pretty even split as it relates
to what the Chat family is believing about the Packers
in their threat to the Detroit Lions.

Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
Yeah, I think it's dangerous and I did it too,
so I'm not saying they're wrong. It's dangerous to try
and play that schedule game moving forward because A you
don't know always what teams are gonna look like, right,
who would have thought, you know, certain injuries would have
you know, derailed some teams. But you know, Green Bay,
you still got to go to Denver and that defense

(01:21:59):
is really flipping good. You still have to at the
end of the season. Who knows what you're gonna be
doing against Minnesota. You gotta play Philadelphia and you got
to play Detroit. But that Denver game is standing pretty tough.
That Denver team's pretty impressive. I'm not sold per se
on bo Nicks yet. I think he's been a good player,
but I wouldn't say that he's a guy I get

(01:22:21):
Going into a super Bowl or getting his team on
the chance of getting to a super Bowl would make
me go, yeah, I believe he's gonna get it done.

Speaker 6 (01:22:28):
I absolutely agree as it relates to the coach. I
look at it like this because I understand, Oh, they're
just like the Cowboys. It's gonna be a regular season
thing whatever. They don't have the same distractions that the
Cowboys do. They don't have the same selfishness that the
Cowboys do. They don't have all the things and take
the Cowboys from.

Speaker 3 (01:22:43):
All their rolling. They're rolling and rolling.

Speaker 6 (01:22:45):
Here's a bump, and now that bump has derailed the
whole ship and blowing the ship up. They don't have that,
at least that's not what it seems. They seem like
they have a team that has bought in on both
sides of the ball. They have a coach that is
able to motivate them. You look at the games and
line them up. First game of year they play the Dolphins.
Dolphins suck right, bro they beat in thirty three to eight.
They played the Broncos. Bronco went to playoffs last year
and they looked like they're the team to contend.

Speaker 3 (01:23:06):
With the Chiefs.

Speaker 6 (01:23:08):
Yeah, they beat them too, and then they beat the Titans.
Were a bad team, but they blew them off twice.
Is what you do a bad teams. We talked about
Andy Trroit. They played the Rams, they played out in
LA and they lost by seven. This is a team
that I think is top three in the league or
top four.

Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
In the league. So it is what it is. They
played a sorry Raiders team.

Speaker 6 (01:23:24):
Guess what, they beat them by thirty four, played the
Cardinals team had one of those games in the NFL
you have some of those where you just you didn't
get up for a team and you looked around and
he's still were there. They won the game, and then
the Chargers they beat them by fourteen.

Speaker 3 (01:23:37):
Who was the division rival so I think this team
is legit.

Speaker 6 (01:23:40):
I think this team is real, and I think you
need to stop looking at Daniel Jones as as Danny Dimes. No, no, no,
this is a quarterback that's operating within the system. And
when you operate within the system that has running back
like that, wide receivers and tight ends like that, offensive
line to protect like that, dangerous.

Speaker 2 (01:23:57):
And Braylan I said all the time, it's really hard
to change people's you're convinced at what Danny Dimes is, okay,
and I'm glad you brought up whatever coach with you know,
Sean Payton. You may not like Sean Payton.

Speaker 3 (01:24:09):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (01:24:10):
I don't like him either. I had a friend of
mine Friday night say I don't I don't like Brian Kelly. Okay,
you don't like him? That's are they a good coach?
And most people would say yes, and I don't.

Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (01:24:23):
I wouldn't like the way a guy like Sean Payton
handled his situation, especially with Russell Wilson. He can do
a me a couple he wants not many people are
buying it because they know who he is, right, but
and it might be just a short term thing in Denver.
That dude knows how to win. And there's something to
be said.

Speaker 1 (01:24:41):
For that too.

Speaker 2 (01:24:41):
All right, really good stuff when we come back. As
I mentioned speaking of coaches, there's a link to one
Lions coach at a high level job. Are you buying
into that? We'll get to that when we come back
after this from Less Stanford. Look at those cars. I
don't think good looking. You better believe it. Every time
we drive by one of those twenty twenty five homers,
my wife says to me, you know, what have you

(01:25:03):
thought about test driving that? I said, I gotta talk
to Braylan about that and see if I can get
in there and test drive it. At Less Stanford Buick GMC,
And why wouldn't you Their lead special right now is
five ninety nine a month plus tax. Or how about
a Cadillac You want to go in style, don't you?
The Lyric SUV lease special for eighty nine a month.
And for those saving a little money, the Equinox ev

(01:25:25):
Lease special is going on right now to twenty nine
a month. Still a good looking, brand new ride, and
it's at Less Stanford Buick GMC. Check out their massive
inventory and check out their website less Stanford dot com.

Speaker 7 (01:25:38):

Who is on this list that's working in policy, Like,
who's on this list? Stop telling me that Antonio Gates
hosted a game in Miami and now there's some concern
about what he was doing figuring it out down on
page like eleven or twelve.

Speaker 3 (01:31:22):
That's going on with the.

Speaker 2 (01:31:23):
Mess Yeah, be consistent, especially since that's something you had
promised before. Well, I think some people care. A guy
lost one point eight million dollars probably cares.

Speaker 6 (01:31:31):
Yeah, true, But I'm saying like, it's just like this,
it's like these distractions.

Speaker 3 (01:31:34):
Or here's Antonio Gates.

Speaker 2 (01:31:36):
Here's Kevin Garnett, right, could Lebron James be part of it? Yeah?
I want consistency, and I know that's hard. It's hard
for us in life, it's hard in sports and all
that other stuff. But I want some consistency. So I'm
absolutely with you on that. Stop lead, just just give me,
give me all, give me all of it. I guess
maybe at once, but instead of just kind of filtering

(01:31:57):
it out there. But yeah, the other things that hell
a lot more diabiical and disgusting than it would be
in a poker game. Real quick question. There's a part
of me that's almost rooting for the Colts because not
that I have anything against quarterbacks. I don't love them,
but it'd be great to see a guy like Jonathan
Taylor win the MVP, you know what I mean. I

(01:32:19):
would like a little splash of something different if if,
of course, if it can't be Saquon Barkley last year,
you're surprised that it wouldn't be right, But yeah, Jonathan
Taylor would be kind of a fun guy to insert
into that conversation because think about it, who were the
guys going into the season. You're thinking Lamar Jackson, that's
not gonna happen. You're thinking Josh Allen, that's probably not

(01:32:41):
gonna happen as of right now. Patrick Mahomes Jaden Daniels
was the other name. Okay, all quarterbacks, most of them,
I would say, now Mahomes the last five games has
been unbelievable. First few, not so much.

Speaker 3 (01:32:56):
Stafford's.

Speaker 6 (01:32:57):
Stafford's a sneaky pick because they had ten games that
they just came my wof Well, what I'm saying it
is a quarterback of war and he's playing just as
good as any quarterback. And the old man Faz he
gets he gets his boy back.

Speaker 3 (01:33:08):
This week too.

Speaker 2 (01:33:09):
That now I haven't thought about that.

Speaker 6 (01:33:13):
He's got ten games to make his case and he's
already floating towards the top, you.

Speaker 3 (01:33:17):
Know, in all categories.

Speaker 6 (01:33:18):
So I would watch closely for Matt Stafford because this
isn't a rigging type thing, but a lot of times
and they like stores and if he's deserving. It's a
situation where you throw him a MVP. If he's deserving,
you throw him MVP. He's got a Super Bowl win,
the narrative saying, and he's gonna be there at the end,

(01:33:39):
So it's not like you're giving him anything.

Speaker 3 (01:33:41):
He would be somebody I'll keep an eye on.

Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
That's a really good call. I had not thought of that,
you know. I obviously there's a lot of Baker Mayfield.
Before the Lions game. Some people actually thought Dak Prescott.
I heard somebody over the weekend. I know, I know
I'd get a good laugh out of that. Not me.
I'm just saying some people somebody hinted at Drake may

(01:34:04):
over the weekend, and I'm like, okay, can.

Speaker 6 (01:34:06):
We just he'll be uh, what do you call it?
Most improved player? I think he'll win most improved.

Speaker 2 (01:34:12):
Okay, I can buy that. Yeah, I'm not. I need
to look up Stafford and see exactly where he is.
He's sixth in in yards. Again, I don't know what
it matters. I mean, your team, I think your team's
gotta win. But he is number one in touchdowns. Okay,
so you're right. Seventeen seventeen tds and I think he's
only got like a couple of picks.

Speaker 6 (01:34:33):
Also too, he played it. You want to see, like
what the schedule looks like, like who did.

Speaker 3 (01:34:37):
You have these wins against it? What did you do?
I remember what year was that.

Speaker 6 (01:34:40):
That was two years ago when Lamar won his last one.
The game that won it was like, whoever wins between
the forty nine Ers and the Baltimore Ravens, that guy
is gonna win MVP.

Speaker 3 (01:34:49):
It came down and he and Rock Perdy, he bought out.
He wins. But they played the Lions, they played the Eagles,
they already played the Green bit.

Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
No.

Speaker 6 (01:34:57):
I think they may have played the Packers, but they
played the teams that matter on the primetimes, faces that matter.
So you get a chance to see if he's gonna win,
and you'll see it.

Speaker 3 (01:35:07):
So I just think he has a good shot.

Speaker 2 (01:35:08):
It's a good one. Yeah, they lost to the Eagles. Yeah,
but still they have not played the Packers yet. But
I do believe they play the Packers. That would make
a lot of sense. It's the one shining moment.

Speaker 3 (01:35:21):
It is.

Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
It's the CBS track for the NCAA tournament. Every player
needs that one shining moment, and by the way, the
moment that can take you out of the conversation too much,
like we saw last year with Jared Goff right in Houston,
that kind of what took him out.

Speaker 6 (01:35:38):
In the moment last night. Does that put not in the contention?
But does that put him a sleeper floating in the wings?

Speaker 2 (01:35:44):
Who's at Jordan Love?

Speaker 3 (01:35:45):
Jordan Love? I think so.

Speaker 2 (01:35:47):
And the reason I say that is because I think
the biggest names coming in have not done what most
people expected. It doesn't mean they can't, doesn't mean josh
Allen Campack get back into the conversation. I think it'd
be really hard for Lamar Jacks, Jaden Daniels, and I
think Patrick Mahomes is probably rising up too. The more
they win, obviously, the more that happens. Kelvin Sheppard, you
and I have tootored this horn for a long time

(01:36:10):
and for good reason. He has earned massive amounts of
respect from anybody who doubted him. They should apologize. And
it's not a small sample size. It's legit what he
has done, especially last not this past weekend because Detroit
was not a buy, but the following the previous weekend
with a makeshift secondary against a really good flipping football

(01:36:32):
team is one of the most shining moments for a coach.
There are rumors, because he played at LSU that he
might be a candidate for the LSU head coaching gig.
What are your thoughts on that?

Speaker 3 (01:36:48):
None, because I don't think there's any lady in that.

Speaker 6 (01:36:50):
I think what Kelvin Shepherd is doing, what he's building
here and understanding that he was LSU death value the
whole nine yards. I just think right now his focus
is the NFL in all fats. I think right now
he's dialed into trying to make sure his defense is
as good as he wants it to be, make sure
they're good as they can be. And I think he
wants to do that for a couple of years. You
see who his mentor was. Remember what Aaron Glenn's mission

(01:37:13):
was when he got it. I want to leave as
the greatest defensive coordinator the Lions I've ever seen.

Speaker 3 (01:37:18):
That was his mindset, and then.

Speaker 6 (01:37:19):
He felt like once he did that, okay, cool, Now
I can move up to the next thing where I
can go tack the next space. I think Kelvin Servy's
gonna do the same. I think he wants to leave
his mark. I think he's just now kind of really
getting to what he wants to be. But also I
think it's the NFL. I think NFL is king for him.
I think NFL is king once you get in and
you have an opportunity to get to that next space

(01:37:40):
or you set yourself on a trajectory to be a
head coach. You're not trying to do that and go
to the college landscape space where you got to go
contend with transfer portal at nil and Alabama and Georgia
and the landscape shifting. Like, you don't get any type
of a certainty in the college space. Now now NFL,
you get a couple of years if you come in

(01:38:01):
with the right one, if you have that conversation, it's
gonna take this, that and the third.

Speaker 3 (01:38:04):
You'll get three years in the NFL college.

Speaker 2 (01:38:08):
Yeah, you're right. I used to think college was a
better opportunity if you went to a really good program
that was established and would help almost recruit itself. All right,
we're not talking about, with all due respect, the mid
majors that that I you know, love so.

Speaker 3 (01:38:22):
Much, Penn State, Florida.

Speaker 2 (01:38:24):
Yeah, it's like it's almost not that it's done for
you still have to work at it, but it's a
really good job. Whereas the NFL, you're dealing with money
and you're dealing with attitudes and guys you are making
more money than you and it's a hard phone.

Speaker 6 (01:38:36):
That may change his mind, right, like the wind may
blow like it did in New York.

Speaker 3 (01:38:40):
He might just decided like get.

Speaker 2 (01:38:44):
Right, or put you in a really awkward situation, like
I'm going to sign this guy two years, forty million
dollars thirty million guaranteed and then go crap all over him,
you know, like they did with the Jets. However, it's
different now. College is much worse because and much I think,
much harder, much, I agree, than what you've got to do.
So I agree with you. I've read that on a

(01:39:04):
number of different social takes, and sometimes, you know, when
NFL writers are reporting it, sometimes there is a little
fire there that maybe LSU would want to open up
the conversation and at least talk to him. I think
it would be wise to at least talk to him, Okay,
but that doesn't mean that it's going to change his mind.
I think you're right. I think he's he's headed for

(01:39:26):
an NFL gig at some point in his career, and
we wish him. Well. I'm going to bring up two
name products of success. What's that go, Redhead?

Speaker 7 (01:39:33):
I said no, and that's a product of success. Braylan
told us at the beginning of the season when there
was a lot of noise about these coordinators, and you
echoed it to that, this is what happens to good teams.

Speaker 3 (01:39:44):
Your coordinators are going to get poached.

Speaker 7 (01:39:46):
People are gonna want the secret sauce of the recipes
your success. But this is why I believe as Lions fans,
especially as we can see you down this road, we're
going to see Dan Campbell continue to overcome. All of
us will stow it through this process. It is why
Step pissed off from people's like, oh, this was always
Dan Campbell's offensive team, because he was like, where was
that an offseason? It's just steel Dan Campbell's I expect

(01:40:08):
him to find the guys yearly. Now that other teams
are going to win a publish.

Speaker 2 (01:40:13):
And they want to those guys would want to be here,
They want to be part of the staff. And you
know why, because suddenly he's built a tree. Who wouldn't
want to be Wow, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:40:22):
Isn't this such a good problem to have if like
looking at from like the Lions perspective, that people want
your guys and you're constantly promoting within Calvin Shepard was
here last year, gets rooted DC whether he goes to
a college team or an NFL team or not. But
I definitely feel down the line maybe next year that
conversation has had on where he goes. But isn't this

(01:40:44):
a good problem to have outside of obviously the annoying
national narratives of that offseason after the fact, Oh they
lost another coordinator?

Speaker 3 (01:40:52):
What happened?

Speaker 8 (01:40:52):
Well, we just replaced two head coaches and coordinators this
year and they're doing their thing. And I believe the
rector with those two coordinators is now five and ten
Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson so far, so I would say,
so far the Lions are doing well without.

Speaker 2 (01:41:09):
Or with their new coordinators.

Speaker 6 (01:41:10):
They're definitely doing well with the new coordinators. It's a
unique situation, though, I think one they've built this thing
up the right way.

Speaker 3 (01:41:17):
They've built it through the four or five years.

Speaker 6 (01:41:19):
So now the guys that they have in place are
leaders and captains of this situation. Jared Goff when you
give him in this individual like Johnny Moe, who he
knows has some kind of understanding of what this situation
looks like. Kelvin Sheppard, He's promoted from within. He replaces
his mentor Aaron Glenn.

Speaker 3 (01:41:34):
He knows that defense.

Speaker 6 (01:41:35):
He knows Hutch, he knows Azelone, he knows Jack Campbell.
So you're keeping a piece of who you are. When
it doesn't work and when it's not cool is when
you look at the Philadelphia Eagles who did that the
year after they went to the Super Bowl and then lost,
and then they removed their Shane Stinking and Gannet. They
bought in coordinators that did not know the Philadelphia defense,
that did not know who Jalen Hurts was, and they
stunk and they look bad and they had to get

(01:41:57):
rid of those guys and bring some other guys in.
It works as long as you keep that intact and
in that identity for lack of a better word, and
they had that. Jared Goff is your leader on offense.
Jared Goff understands the offensive playbook, he understands what works.
He's gonna make sure as long as you got a
guy on that same pace, and then with the defense
when you don't do it that way and you start

(01:42:18):
running the risk of what team is that this doesn't
look the same Kellen Moore, he leaves look at the
Eagles every week, it's a different Eagles team.

Speaker 3 (01:42:27):
Because this Eagle.

Speaker 6 (01:42:27):
Team you see one yesterday was not the same Eagle
team that won the week before. That was not the
same type of win they had the week before that.
It was not the same type of loss they had
the week before that.

Speaker 2 (01:42:37):
Yeah, I think it's a great thing because we talk
about not that coaches always want this, but we talk
about coaching trees. Marty Schottenheimer's coaching tree featured Bill Kower,
Ken Wizenhutt, Tony Dungee. Those are impressive, right, Paul Brown
and his unbelievable coaching tree, and Bill Parcells with obviously

(01:42:58):
Belichick is is a big name associated with it. And
then you look at Bill Walsh, who might have the
greatest of all time when he's got certain guys on there,
like you know, Mike Shanahan and Jeff Fisher and Brian
Billick and John Gruden, Yeah, and all those guys, and
then you know one one, one, one to three, who's
that Mike Holmgreen. Mike Homgren had a really good coaches,
so under Bill, he's under Bill Walsh. Yeah, and then

(01:43:20):
he had a decent one too, So yeah, you're you're
absolutely right, he is under Bill Walsh. So I would
say Bill Walsh, and I don't know about sim Gilman
and those guys. I apologize, but if you looked at
Bill Walsh, I would guess he has the most impressive tree.
Dan Campbell. That's why I root for Aaron Glenn begrudgingly
Ben Johnson except for twice a year. I want that
to be successful. And then you want Kelvin Sheppard to

(01:43:41):
go out there and do something, and you would eventually.
I mean, I don't know if John Morton has aspirations either,
but when you get guys like that, it builds more
of your credibility and you you attract better coaches to
your staff, especially when you're promoting from within. Who doesn't
want that. I'm gonna be a young coach. I want

(01:44:02):
to go coach for the Lions. Why Well, because I
may start as a special teams assistant and I may
move up to eventually a tight ends coach, then maybe
a running backs coach who handles the running game part
of it. Then in OC and then I'm gonna go someplace. Yeah,
I think that's really important. So I think it's a
good problem.

Speaker 1 (01:44:17):
Now.

Speaker 6 (01:44:18):
You then also build like a network of individual You
built a network of coaches where you can get other coaches.

Speaker 3 (01:44:23):
You can have coaches you work with that work under you.
Hey look, hey, Dan, I got this guy.

Speaker 13 (01:44:27):
Man.

Speaker 6 (01:44:27):
He's sharp as whip man. You should hire men as
a wide receiver coach. I think he's gonna do some
things for you. Hey look, I got this guy. He's
a linebacker coach right now, Dan, he's gonna be your
DC in two years or players. Hey Dan, look, I
got a player I can't do anything with. But look,
you know you you bring this guy to your team.
Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Kevin They've been doing this for
the last once. You sh build deeper for the last

(01:44:49):
ten years. Terms of sending guys up, Hey look, I
got this guy. See what you can do with him.
See what you can do with him? You should bring
this coach on.

Speaker 3 (01:44:55):
Jim and John Harbaugh.

Speaker 6 (01:44:57):
How many guys came from Baltimore, went to Michigan success
and bounce back to the league.

Speaker 3 (01:45:01):
And now they're bouncing over there with Harbaugh.

Speaker 2 (01:45:04):
In Los Angeles, Jesse Mintor Mike McDonald. I mean they've
been Mike McDonald's done a hell of a job in Seattle,
Absolutely hell.

Speaker 1 (01:45:12):
Of a job.

Speaker 2 (01:45:13):
Yeah, and mentor's fast tracking. I've got two names for
you guys, and then we want to get some more chats.
We got one more break and then well we'll get
you know, the mail bag and so on and so forth.
But I love sports stories. They're really good stories. And
I noticed two over the weekend that I wanted to
share with you. You guys know, I know Kool A
does Austin Reeves for the LA Lakers, right. I mean,

(01:45:36):
here's a guy who.

Speaker 3 (01:45:37):
I got it right. The head of k count of
him a couple of years ago. I know him.

Speaker 2 (01:45:41):
Well, Okay, that sounds it sounds like you don't have
fifty one like you don't like him. Don't don't blame
him because somebody. Don't blame him because somebody else was
an idiot. Okay, that dude's fair. Dude had fifty one points,
eleven boards and nine dimes last night. Okay. And here's
a guy who was zero star recruited zero star, didn't

(01:46:04):
start a single game his freshman year average four points
per game, started eleven of thirty one games his sophomore year,
spent five years in college and didn't get drafted. He
was Oklahoma, Right, Okay, that's impressive.

Speaker 6 (01:46:18):
It's very impressive. He would have gotten drafted. But this
is a cool thing about his story.

Speaker 3 (01:46:22):
This is what they do in the NBA that they
kind of doing.

Speaker 6 (01:46:26):
The NFL in round seven, round six, but not really,
you don't you don't have the power to question.

Speaker 2 (01:46:31):
All right.

Speaker 6 (01:46:32):
They tried to draft Austin reve A couple of teams
tried to draft him towards the middle of the end
of the second round, and you know what, he had
the power to dude him and his age, and they said, no,
we're good, don't draft us because we have our couple
spots where if we don't get drafted, this is where
we go. Didn't get drafted, got out, and then he
went to la who came with It wasn't that much money,

(01:46:52):
but that's where he wanted. He knew that his skill
set fit that environment and that he would have success.
And now to the point he got the bad love
that they have that look, you know, what. I appreciate
the opportunity. Don't draft me fifty one. I got a
situation over here that I think might be better. Thank
you for the consideration. Go a different place. That's what
he did.

Speaker 2 (01:47:10):
Yeah, I don't like him because of what he said
about Detroit. However, I do think it's a really cool story.
And yes it was Oklahoma, but he started at Wichita State,
which is more of a baseball school. Lastly, have you
ever heard of a Drew mess to maker anybody?

Speaker 3 (01:47:27):
Makers? Sound like a pitcheon?

Speaker 2 (01:47:28):
Yeah, it does. Never started a game at the varsity
level in high school. He was a zero star recruit.
He was a walk off. He's a freshman this year.
He leads the country in passing. He just threw for
six hundred and eight yards for North Texas over the weekend.

(01:47:50):
Six hundred and eight yards. The mean Green are seven
and one, and he leads the nation in passing. Those
are two pretty cool stories, I think.

Speaker 6 (01:47:58):
So Yeah, just when ever I hear these crazy stats,
because those will be the stats like Texas Tech when
I was in college, Hawaii when I was in college,
Coke Brennan and Tommy Change in Search, North Carolina, Well, Houston,
when I was a kick David Kleanler Andre Ware.

Speaker 3 (01:48:16):
I used to just be pissed, like, damn, why couldn't
win one of these quarterbacks?

Speaker 2 (01:48:19):
These ridiculous that game.

Speaker 3 (01:48:20):
I can be a part of it like that one time.
I didn't think of that with Chad Henny. Just say
you know what I'm doing for seven hundred tonight.

Speaker 6 (01:48:27):
Like where was the game in the league where Mars
Sanchez said, don't word you want for.

Speaker 3 (01:48:30):
Three hundred Jesus the league.

Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
I'm sure Chad Henny would have wanted to do it.
The problem is there's a guy wearing a headset on
the sideline who says, I don't think you should do it.
We're going to run the ball too.

Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
We knew we were.

Speaker 6 (01:48:42):
We were going to run the ball all game except
for on third down and then in the fourth quarter
if we need all.

Speaker 3 (01:48:47):
Right, brother, then come here, come on, come on, let's
run some rock.

Speaker 2 (01:48:51):

Speaker 2 (01:52:44):
And we bet it's interesting. Somebody in the chat said,
you know, we believe in in Shep, not me, but
Calvin Sheppard. And for good reason, because I'm definitely no,
they're not talking about me.

Speaker 3 (01:52:56):
A lot of people up there there.

Speaker 2 (01:53:01):
I don't have a headset. I don't have dreads, and
people done the defense don't look at me and say
I will follow you.

Speaker 3 (01:53:06):
But dreads.

Speaker 2 (01:53:09):
That would be special. That would be something else, wouldn't it.

Speaker 8 (01:53:12):
Chef dresses up as Shep on Friday.

Speaker 2 (01:53:14):
Yeah, I'll see that on Friday. Yeah, that would be fantastic.
Right anyway, h Dana Shanna says, we think Shep is
good because he's doing a lot with a little. Johnny
Moe is doing less with a lot more. So why
aren't we talking about Johnny Mole? Uh falling flat a
little bit? Is this just the line? How do you

(01:53:36):
think they've fallen flat? If at all? The Lions.

Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
I don't think they've fallen flat, but I think they
have been flat at times.

Speaker 6 (01:53:44):
I think you look at some of the second half
situations as it relates to the offense that they've stalled
in the last three games, whether it was the Browns,
whether it was Bengals, whether it was the Buccaneers, like
they still stalling in those spaces.

Speaker 3 (01:53:55):
Jared Goff had an interception last game.

Speaker 6 (01:53:56):
Jered Goff had an interception in the game before that
as well, when he starts off with none.

Speaker 3 (01:54:00):
So I think you look at that.

Speaker 6 (01:54:01):
Maybe they're talking about that running between the tackles like
it just the last game. If what Jamior Gibbs did
his thing and the offensive line looked good in those players,
we broke some of those down, but those players are
far and few in between in terms of the running
between the tackles. It doesn't look like, excuse me, for
the beginning of the season, it just looks like there
was some struggling. It didn't look as smooth. Replacing Frank

(01:54:25):
rag now replacing for Kevin Zeile.

Speaker 3 (01:54:27):
It takes time.

Speaker 6 (01:54:28):
It's gotten a little bit better, but there are spaces
in there where it looks a little flat.

Speaker 2 (01:54:34):
Yeah, I get it. It's specifically Kansas City and Green
Bay because those are their two losses. But they're still
their eighth and rushing their eighth and passing their top
ten in overall yards per game, and they're also thirty
points per game.

Speaker 6 (01:54:49):
It's not the stats, though, shut And that's why I
haven't even had this conversation.

Speaker 3 (01:54:52):
That's why last.

Speaker 6 (01:54:53):
Week we talked about the Bucks, we talked about the win,
talked about the things they did well.

Speaker 3 (01:54:57):
We kind of.

Speaker 6 (01:54:57):
Glossed over, you know, some of the you know, the
stalling if you will, because they are those numbers. But
if we're going to have an honest conversation, they two
things can still be true. And I think when you're
looking in the space of talking about the teams in
which we're talking about, let's not compare them to the
games then which they wont They beat the Bengals, they
beat the Browns, and then they beat the Bucks team

(01:55:19):
we're talking about the Rams, we're talking about the Eagles,
we're talking about the Chiefs, and we're talking about your
Indianapolis coach starring Indiana Jones. Looking at those four teams,
there's some things the Lions gotta clean up.

Speaker 2 (01:55:30):
Looking at it from that lens, yep, I'm not going
to disagree with that. I think you know there are
there's wars on every team. Man, Okay, losing to San Francisco.
You're the Rams losing at home to San Francisco. When
San Francisco is playing without George Kittle, without Boso, without
you know, two wide receivers. I think that's a bad

(01:55:52):
loss for the Rams. They're they're fallible. Everybody is okay,
and you're right you bring up the Browns and the Bengals.
Those are fairy examples. They beat the snot out of
the Browns, who had just beat in Green Bay. So
it's tough to play connect the dots in the NFL.
I'm not saying we should. I'm just saying we're not
giving John Morton a pass here. I'm just telling you

(01:56:13):
his offense statistically, and a lot of it is cushioned
because they scored fifty two against Chicago and put up
big numbers against the two Ohio teams that they're They've
had some injuries too, and they've been okay.

Speaker 3 (01:56:27):
They've definitely been okay.

Speaker 6 (01:56:28):
The conversation for me, I thought, was by the fans, like,
you know, what's going on.

Speaker 3 (01:56:32):
With the offense of Johnny mod do you see anything?

Speaker 6 (01:56:35):
And in looking through my lens, I'm looking for down
the road and I'm thinking about what those teams would
be like what those games are gonna be? Like the matchup,
there's the match up, and you're right, they're defallible, they're beatable.
They've shown you chinks in the arm every team in
the NFL this season has is just I can understand
a little bit from what the chat is talking about,
because there are spaces in when you watch the Lions

(01:56:55):
where it's it gets legitimately quiet for two through four
possessions at a time, Like you know, you start off
the game with Amar Brown touchdown and then you have
a Jamiir Gibbs eighty five yard scamper he takes off,
then there's like nothing at times.

Speaker 3 (01:57:09):
It's quietness at times.

Speaker 6 (01:57:10):
That happened in the Bengals game and in the second half,
especially after the first series of the second half.

Speaker 2 (01:57:16):
So just totally understanding a little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:57:18):
It's good.

Speaker 2 (01:57:19):
It's really good. How about anything else in the mail
bag or super chats within the next three minutes or so?

Speaker 7 (01:57:24):
Oh yeah, definitely definitely gonna get to a couple of
these super chats here.

Speaker 3 (01:57:29):
From our guy Michael Wherry.

Speaker 7 (01:57:30):
He says that the first one of two dollars super
chat and he wears the number one Crown today amongst
the top fans. He says the Vikes are in for
a butt whooping poor JJ.

Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
Which one all of them but probably McCarthy is, Yeah,
this situation is bad.

Speaker 6 (01:57:48):
I mean, they're tackles being hurt and they look ugly
and J J. McCarthy, I don't think he's ready to
deal with that. On slide that is gonna be the
Detroit Alliance. If he's the quarterback that's gonna take it.
But if he is, be prepared, because they're gonna pin
their ears back and they will go.

Speaker 2 (01:58:06):
Yeah. I think there's a reason Minnesota held him out
as long as they did. I don't think this is
an ideal situation for them to bring him back. I do.
I do wonder if Minnesota is starting to second guess
not drafting JJ McCarthy. I'm not gonna judge him based
off just a couple of games, but letting one of

(01:58:28):
their veteran quarterbacks go instead of saying, you know what,
Sam Darnold wouldn't have done it. But it's easy for
me to say Daniel Jones. Now, Daniel Jones, howt about
a one year deal? Okay? They essentially went out and
did the same thing with Carson Wentz on a one
year deal, not fourteen million dollars, but they still had
to go out and get him. Why wouldn't you have
kept a guy like that just in case? I don't

(01:58:49):
think they prepared themselves very well in case A he
got hurt or b he struggles, like a lot of
rookie quarterbacks would.

Speaker 6 (01:58:56):
I think they may be placed a little This is
gonna sound crazy. I think they placed a little bit
to my faith in who Kevin O'Connell was in this
particular situation. Who's a damn good coach and he's showing
you what he've done. But he's revamped quarterbacks that been
around a little bit. Yeah, that a little older that
haves you know what I'm saying, He hasn't done it
with a guy, which, if I'm being honestly, this is

(01:59:18):
my guy.

Speaker 3 (01:59:18):
I love Jaz.

Speaker 6 (01:59:19):
When he was coming out, all the conversation was he
hasn't passed like that. He's not if you're passing quarterback.
Has he shown us that he can even be this
at the next level. All he's shown is is RPO
standing the ball off in a couple of runs up
the sideline.

Speaker 3 (01:59:31):
So that's the part that I thought you were gonna go.

Speaker 2 (01:59:33):
To point any more, kool ai before we're out of here.

Speaker 7 (01:59:37):
One more from Michael Way another two dollars super chat.
He says, I just know this. The Packers are a fraud.
He puts that in all caps with three exclamation marks,
so he really means fraud.

Speaker 2 (01:59:50):
And he puts watch, Okay, look, I hope you're right.
I don't see it. I see them as a legitimate
challenger in the NFC. I know you're looking at the
Cleveland loss, in the Dallas tie, which is ridiculous. Cardinals
Dallas offense has turned out to be pretty good.

Speaker 8 (02:00:06):
The Cardinals were close to.

Speaker 2 (02:00:08):
Cardinals were close to the Packers.

Speaker 8 (02:00:10):
Yeah, it was a really really close game up until
the end.

Speaker 2 (02:00:13):
Yeah, I guess I look at who wins. I think
the NFL that's who the That's what the NFL is. Yeah,
I guess past weekend's a little different. We've watched the NFL,
you've watched your entire life. He's played in it. Are
we surprised that there's close games in the National Football League?
What have we been watching? Of course, there's close games,
there's upsets all the time. Not this weekend, but yeah,

(02:00:36):
it was, except for like, ye, Miami Atlanta just blew
my mind.

Speaker 3 (02:00:40):
Anyway, Green Bay is legit. Just get over it.

Speaker 6 (02:00:43):
I know we hate our division, and as you should.
You're supposed to hate the division. You're supposed to hate
the coast to left your team and go to a
team in the division.

Speaker 1 (02:00:49):
I get that.

Speaker 3 (02:00:49):
You can hate him. I you want to hate them all,
but you better by team is real.

Speaker 6 (02:00:54):
When I saw Carsons and Rashan Gary on that defensive line,
they got some players we saw that game one and
Nixon that he's a nice dB man. They Addamson be
and you still have the leader that is Xavier mckinne.
And on offense, you can say Jordan Love is fraudulent.
One of my biggest questions coming into the season was
the injury that he had last year. And people forget

(02:01:14):
he got injured in that first game over wherever the
hell they played at overseas or out the country. He
got injured in that game and legitimately sucked for about
eight to nine weeks of that season, and then he
started getting better at the end of the season. But
then you run into the playoffs and it's over. So
he seems to be getting back to form. You cannot
deny twenty completed passes in a row because Shep and

(02:01:36):
I were talking about before he brought that to the show.
It's not just twenty passes like we've seen that half
all the time. Jared Goff has done that in the Sleep,
but Jered Goff's done was like fifteen passes to Jamier
Gibbs or David Montgomery and then.

Speaker 3 (02:01:49):
Five nice passes.

Speaker 6 (02:01:50):
There were about nine different types of passes that came
in that twenty twenty completion street.

Speaker 3 (02:01:57):
For Jordan Love.

Speaker 6 (02:01:58):
So I would get pastroofiness of his look and pay
attention to what that Green Bay team is as a whole,
because let's not forget Matt Lafleores has been doing this
for a while.

Speaker 3 (02:02:07):
He went thirteen and three.

Speaker 6 (02:02:09):
Three years in a row within Aaron Rodgers, and he's
been to the playoffs, uh you know, a bunch of
times as well.

Speaker 2 (02:02:14):
So yeah, I'm not saying they're gonna win the Super Bowl,
but I think, yeah, they're a solid legit.

Speaker 3 (02:02:18):
Yeah, the good news is you already played in Green Bay.

Speaker 6 (02:02:21):
That's the best thing about the green Bay Lion situation
is the next game, it's dott the Street.

Speaker 2 (02:02:26):
