Already seen for the last two years in terms of
that arrogance. I don't know. I heard you guys talking
about the head coach stuff, and we need a deeper personnel.
We need a commitment to depth on this team, because
I think the hardest thing for us to stomach as
Lions fans these last two seasons is having the hope

and actually seeing a team that was great in the
first half of the season. And sure we finished fifteen
to two last year, but it was a lot of
smoke and mirrors. So at this point, yeah, you got
to get guys in here that can You're not pulling,
you know, Jalen Mills off of the street by week fourteen,
fifteen sixteen. I need to see them, though, take the accountability,

and I need to see both of these coordinators gone,
and I both both of them. It's not just Johnny Morton, guys,
because listen, what I saw what ag do with less
talent and then lose that talent to injury and still
be able to dial things up. What I've seen out
of this guy shop is just an unwillingness to get

creative and to be able to dial up different schemes
like everything that he's dialed up. Since we've had any
kind of injuries has been a losing formula on the
defensive side of the ball.

I do think it matters where those injuries are when
you have your opportunistic playmakers back there, that covered a
lot of the issues that AG couldn't realistically Kirby Joseph.
You're talking about even guys at Carlton Davis who was like,
like turnover machines when you don't have that type of
firepower back there. I think it does to stort just
a little bit of what Kelvin Sheppard could be. So

to me, I would run it back again, and I
want them to go and actually invest in the secondary,
actually invest in fielding a defense that you think can
carry you through, because I just I did not like
what they had back there. Took a little bit of
a step back too.

Is Shepherd a premier defensive coordinator? Do you see him
becoming a premier defensive coordinator?

Everybody around the league has talked about the smarts he
has and the tops he has, and we saw last
year the person getting a credit when the Detroit Lions
needed that defensive step up with a lot of injuries.
It was Calvin Sheppard, who they were identifying as the
one coming up with a lot of the stunts, just
like Hank Fraley was getting some credit last year for
some of the things they were doing on that offensive
line too. So you know, I don't know, based on

the things we've heard, based on he's been coached up,
based on reports, if I'm going back to being a player,
I do. I do want to see him maybe one
more year. But but I get where you're at with
them taking a step back.

Last turnover get dependent. Yeah, and that's why I'm saying,
you lose your best turnover machine.

Then Kirby, Joseph and Brian Branch and now Calvin Shepard
is left with no secondary and no run support outside
of his linebacking corps.

What happened to the run stopping though? I mean, this
was a top three runa but nobody has really gone
from the front five, six, seven. That is change this
run game because now we can't. Brian Branch, I think
is the key because it allowed it freed up Kirby

to be able to ballhawk the way that he did.
But it also was that reinforcement in the run game. Uh,
my thing is this I'm gonna say it over and
over again. I talked about it yesterday, I talked about
it the day before. I believe that this is a
premier franchise in the NFL right now. People are paying
that to get in, So why aren't we chasing that
in our hiring. We should be chasing that in free

agency and trade the way that our fans want. But
I think that we should be chasing that in our
hires for our coaching candidates because I feel like we
went safe and said we're good, went with some buddies
like they have in the past, and instead of saying,
like the Philadelphia Egos have what last six years, they've
had a different offense credit right, and because they know

they're on their path to the NFC Championship game, maybe
even a Super Bowl, maybe even a Super Bowl victory,
and they will happily say goodbye to yet another OC
or DC. And I think that that's the mind set
that they have to have here. You go out and
you get premier guys. So let's go get Rex Ryan
and bring his Lions Grinch sweater that he wore.

kind of six to one a half doze the others.
So I don't know for me, if you give a
fully healthy defense to Rex Ryan, it's gonna be more

dynamic than you'll ever.

What were the broadcast pointing out Kelvin Shepherd with them
linebackers was dicing and slicing and creating the pressure from
the middle.

To mote him to the linebackers coach, because he's he's
done a hell of a job with on linebackers. I
can't take that as it is.

I do believe this when you said he took the
safe with Johnny Mo, they absolutely did with Calvin Sheppard.
I think they took what they thought was going to
be the Ben Johnson route. So I think that they
believe that they have the next wonder Kin on defensive
coordinators with Calvin Shepherd, and I do believe it is
to be. It remains to be seen because you want
to see what he looks like when he has those

ballhawks out there. He could play a little bit more
free with the first and the second layer. But I
think you're right man, as it relates to the premier aspect,
the mindset that we have to have and the mindset
that we hope that the organization has, that they're a
premier organization and they have to do things at a
super Bowl mindset level. And that's where I know Justin's frustrations,

yours minds and all of ours. That's where it sets in.
Whether it's one particular thing that's the same or if
we have different things, it's all with the mindset that
we don't think they attacked it with that calper. Whether
it's the draft, we don't think they attacked that with
a super Bowl mindset. Some people don't think. Whether it's
the defensive line, whether it's the offensive line, which we
knew had to be elite. That was the one thing
we all knew. If you don't do anything else, you

gotta keep that elite because then you know your offense
can put forty points up there. If golf is standing upright.
So it's like there's such certain things they just from
a from the organizational mindset, I think you're you're onto
something there. They did it at a lesser level this
year to me than they have the previous three or
four years.

terms of Johnny Morton, we differ on Shep curious to
hear where the chat is. So players, I think that
we can all agree that the offensive line is our
biggest need right now. You know, somehow our edge rushers
are two of the top twelve I believe sack guys

in the NFL. Right now. Interior of that defensive line
is starting a little suspect. Now we look at our
secondary with Kirby Joseph and a degenerative problem, and then
Brian Branch probably lost majority of next year. A lot
of holes suddenly on this team. Kool aid, Where are
you going first? What is your biggest need? If you're

GM and you go into free agency this year, who
are you going after without the draft factoring in?

Speaker 2 (09:46):
You know, like I said, for me, it's find a
way to make that offensive line elite status. You know,
you look at the last two years, and if you
put any stock in the PFF, the Detroit Lions were
top five a couple of years ago, top two last year,
and now of a sudden, you come into this year
and there's games where this team can't break fifty, sixty
or even twenty yards rushing. You know, that, to me

is one of the biggest detriments to why the team
is where they're at. Last year, they could control last
couple of years, they could control the time of possession
because of how well they knew and very time we
put the rock in any of our running backs hands,
even freaking crack Reynolds bro we knew that they were
gonna get four or five, six, seven yards. And when
you can't rely on that from guys that were supposed

to be ascending, even because I love Jamiir Gibbs, but
I'm sorry, five six yards in a game, I do
not care. You're supposed to be able to fall forward
and get four. But what did we see? We saw
Jared Goff, who no matter the stats, there's a lot
of people who believe and I believe this too. He
did not look right. He did not look like a
top five MVP candidate like he was last season. He

did not have the command and the control of the
team this year, and he couldn't get them settled, which
was just a little concerning and different than you saw
shot in two years. So when you pair that, now
I'm looking at like, Okay, well, a lot of these
guys on offense didn't look right. What's gonna be that
main thing? I'm looking at the offensive line. If it
was just golf, then then I'm probably even more concerned

and zeroed in on that quarterback. But since a lot
of the pieces on offense just didn't quite click, I'm
looking at the offensive line, and I've been kicking back
and forth his de offensive line or is it get
our ball hawks ready? Because we paid Kirby because of
the effect that we knew he had on the game,
And now you're right, we're talking about something that could
be degenerative, which again, it's just a lot of unease

that I didn't have just months ago.

talking about it, which frees up ninety four million dollars
in cap space for the Detroit Lions going into this offseason.
You draft a left tackle, the best one available, because
over the last five seasons there has not been one
bust first round left tackle in the NFL draft or

I echo the same sentiment. You need a center because
you're not draft in a center.

You just saw what Tate Ratlie and Mahogey because Mahoganey
is essentially a rook he played sixty snaps last year.
You need an experienced guy in the middle of your
offensive line to make sure that that is a non negotiable.

You need to go back to your identity. You need
to be able to run the football.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
You need to be able to protect golf up the middle,
and you need to be and then on defense, you
need to figure out this D line. Almost your entire
D line outside of Aiden Hutchinson and Tyler Williams and
leeman'neil is up on contract this year.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
You need to rework this thing. You need to either
get DJ Reader on a cheaper deal. You need to
get Roy Lopez is probably gonna lose.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
He played a great year and he's gonna be a
commodity AQM double digit sacks.

He's gone.

He's getting a payday from a bottom to your organization
in the NFL. That's just how it goes. And you
have to see here now and you have to say
what am I willing to spend money on and is
it worth it, spending it or drafting it, and you
have to weigh those options, and drafting a center. You
probably do it in the later rounds, just to make

sure you have the depth and someone waiting to take over.
But if you don't make Lindenbaum choking a contract from
the Ravens. Yeah, twenty five years old, one of the
best centers in the NFL by his peers. Everyone says
that that is not hyperbole. That's not my opinion, that's
the NFL's opinion of this guy. Make him choke on

twenty million plus, fix your offensive line, fix your offense,
Let Gibbs have the holes he needs to make home
run plays, and then draft a left tackle because if
it's not this year, it's next year, because Decker is
on his twilight years.

I love that move at center. I don't want them
to go for a center in the draft. It's going
to take a couple of years for him to get
up to that level of production that you need to
re establish the type of O line that we had before.
I love that move because you bring in a young
veteran to put in that middle spot. You draft the
left tackle. You've got some young guards that if you

can get one more veteran for either of those guard
spots where you can you know, not expose both those
guys at all times. That to me is the key
for them. The linebacking corps over on the defense, though,
I want to talk about them because I don't think
any of us expected at the end of this season
that we'd be looking at the linebacker. But that's the

strength of this defense through seventeen games or sixteen games
so far, in my opinion, and angelone, he's not going
to get the offers on the open market that he
thought he was going to at the beginning of the season.
He had a subpar season this year, things didn't go well.
They still gave him a little bit of money. Sounds

like you think the door is shut on Azel. Is
there a possibility he comes back? He's just like that.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
We give him like a little two year chicken and
biscuit deal last year, and he probably would have accepted that.
I just don't see it here. But it goes back
to the mindset that you said, if you're talking about
super Bowl level, I love Anzo here. If you're talking
about super Bowl level, is that a move that they're saying,
you know, what that's the super Bowl when he moved
right now? And I think it's because they set themselves

up wrong. If you draft better amongst your your your capital.
And I'm glad that they have Jack Campbell, but the
rest of it is not necessarily working. Maybe you find
a way to just kind of fit Alexandeloni to vet
into that lineup, but now you're in a situation to
where you probably need a whole lot more meat in
that in that middle, in that linebacker room to make
this thing go. It was different before when it was

Alexandeloni who was like heat seeking missile a few years ago,
like probably the best in one of the best in
the in the NFC North Jack a young Jack Campbell
on the rise. And then you got Malcolm Rodriguez who's
going crazy as well, and Derek Barnes flashing on that
you don't have that anymore. Now you got Jack Campbell's
a man. And then what else? Because if Angel's at

that door, what is the lineback and core gonna be?
You called it the strength of this defense this year?

on the wrong side of thirty. We do talks, yeah, well, yeah.

That's the big thing is the cap space has to come.
But you know, we know Derek Barnes is gonna be here,
and we know that Campbell's gonna be here. Angel's on
the wrong side of thirty. And this team notoriously doesn't
mess with thirty plus. So I do believe that Angel's gone.
I wouldn't be shocked to see these guys. Yeah, thank
you for your service, But I would not be shocked

for everybody to be real upset on draft Day when
this team goes for maybe another linebacker.

Yeah, well, now, I thought you were gonna say no
more secondary players. For me, personally, I love justin saying
go heavy offensive line in the draft. I've appreciated what
Brad's been able to sign in the secondary. I have
absolutely disliked what he's done with the secondary through the draft.
Outside of maybe Brian Branton. You know, we all love
Kirby Joseph, but I did not like the Terry Ronold

necessarily and the inness Rake Straw picks in terms of
the other needs that we had. I'm still hoping that
those guys proved brad way more right than a lot
of us out here. Yeah, but I'm i'm as it
relates to improving the team, I'm all the way there.
I'm in the trenches in this draft.

If i'm this is what I expect in this offseason,
I expect a center and free agency. I expect a
left tackle in the first round. I expect a linebacker
in the later rounds and in free agency. Both in
the problem in the fourth or later, and in free agency.
It doesn't matter how good he is, just they're they're

gonna add someone to play Sanzo a safety in the
later rounds to insulate yourself because your injuries back there.
My favorite one is Kean sab currently projected in the
fourth round from Alabama. I think it's a very similar
profile as Kirby Joseph. I wasn't on the network at
that point, but I will go to my grave, I
swear on my mother's life.

As soon as the Lions drafted Kirby Joseph in the
third or fourth round, that that's a good pick.
