(01:38):
twenty third, nineteen forty six,and the title is Dinner of Death.
(02:00):
Mm hmmm mm hm. Out ofthe fog, out of the night,
(02:21):
and into his American adventures, comesBulldog Drummer, and now to tell us
(03:25):
about our newest adventure. Here isbulldog drumming. Before I begin, I'd
like to ask a question. Whenyou see a sign on the road that
says danger ahead, do you goon regardless of the danger, or proceed
with care and caution. I askthis because there's a big sign on the
(03:46):
economic road ahead of us, andit says inflation. That means we must
proceed with care and caution to keepprices down. More and more people are
making more money than ever be forand there are fewer things to spend it
on. Therefore, if we outbideach other for what there is, we
force prices up. The value ofmoney decreases, and everybody suffers. But
(04:14):
you can. You must keep pricesdown, buy only what you really need,
and refuse to pay more than sealingprices. Save, save all the
money you can in the form ofwar bonds. Do all you can to
avoid the pitfalls of that danger signthat says inflation, and make every step
(04:38):
you take a step closer to victory. Keep prices down. And now for
the story I call Dinner of Day. It began when two men were arrested
(05:02):
for hijacking trucks. They were knownas Barnaby Mullins and Spike Saunders. Mullins,
who was released on bail, visitedthe office of the District Attorney.
Look, mister mahoney, one ofyour assistants, let me get this for
write any of private office. Willyou listen to me for a couple of
(05:23):
minutes. I'm too busy Mullins andcourt next week. I'll give you all
the time you need. You andyour pal Spiked Saunders, tell me something.
How did you know where to pickme up? The police have ways
of knowing things like that. Whathappened? Tommy Pepper turned stove pigeon?
Cut it, Mullins, you're doingTommy Pepper an injustice. He's a good
newspaper man, the crime reporter whohates rackets and loves to show them up
(05:46):
first. I shouldn't talk that wayabout the celebrated racket bus to Tommy Pepper
out the day before a big banquetin his honor. Will you make in
the main speech of the evening? Is that all you came here to say?
That's some of it? Is?Eh? Anything special you'd like to
hear? Yes, there is.I'd like a full confession from you.
It would save the state needless trial. Expense. Confession. Look, mullins,
(06:10):
I'm making no deals with you orwith any one else. Confess or
get out of here and take yourchances in court. Okay, but before
I start to talk, will youdo me one favor name it. I
got a few little business details toclean up before I start living on the
state. Will you fix it tocontinue my bail for forty eight hours?
All right, barnaby, you canhave until the day after to morrow at
(06:34):
nine a m. I suppose youstart talking, dear, this is insufferable.
(07:00):
Oh come now, and you've beenmoaning all the way to this hotel.
What in the world is the matterwith then? If you must know,
Captain Drummon, it's my feet. You've been tramping about all day and
now a banquet. I've been hopingto rest this evening, Sir Denny,
this banquet is the event of theseason, as visitors to the city were
extremely fortunate to be invited. BecauseI understand that, sir, but my
feet, Come on, forget yourfeet. I'm interested in the fabulous Tommy
(07:25):
Pepper and his work in exposing rackets. I've always wanted to meet him again.
Why I wasn't aware that you evenknew him, sir, Well,
I don't really, but watch youany here he is, hello, Captain
Drummond. Right, yes, misterPepper, we met some years ago.
Tell me I'll get it. Andat the Black Friars Club in nineteen thirty
eight. Right right again, youhave a remarkable memory. I'll never forget
(07:47):
a face I don't dare it mightbe a guy just that of prisoner who
had spent ten years remembering I senthim there. Well, sorry, I
can't oblige you there. Oh pardonme, Uh, Tommy Pepper, this
is dennyhy had Denny very well, thank you, sir. Well, gentlemen,
before we brave the mob in abanquet all, how about the special
private room. There are some morederves in a row of bottles. Will
you join name? Well, thankyou, mister Pepper shortened that to Tommy
(08:09):
will ye good heavens, sir. It's a weird looking chap following us,
an enormous hunking fellow. Yes,Denny, that's Dodo and he is following
us, or rather me, that'shis job. Dodo? Is that his
name? Sure? A Dodo?Come here? Wa? Dodo meets some
friends of mine. Captain Drummond andDenny. Who Yes, Dodo friends,
(08:33):
Oh ooh hello there? All right, Dodo stay close behind us. You
said the Dodo's job was following you, mister Pepper. Yeah, that's right.
He's not much to look at ortalk to, but he's ass as
a bodyguard. To date, Iall made lives, my word? Is
there that much risk in writing aboutrecords constantly and monotonously? Even tonight,
(08:54):
some thoughtful soul telephone me to sayI'd die before the evening was finished.
Mm here we are, and there'sa distinguished da studying his speech. I
am mahoney. Hello Tommy, Well, hello Captaindrummond and Denny. Nice if
you come to the banquet. We'revery glad to be here. How about
a preview of your speech? Mahoney, it'll save me from blushing when I
(09:16):
hear it. Not a chance,Tommy, the speech goes back in the
pocket. I'm not going to spoila surprise. Paul. Now, I
know I need a drink. Ihave Jenny bourbon for me. Drummond,
Oh dry sherry please you Denny thesame, sir? Hey, ah you
mister mahoney, kime on right, mahoney right, A pony of Kimmel.
(09:37):
You never forget anything, do you, Tommy. Well, allow me to
tonight's guest of honor, Tommy Pepper, may you prosper? Thanks Drummond.
Here's how that bourbon hits the spot. Well, let's get onto the banquet
shot. What's the matter with Mahoney, Bonie, what's wrong? I don't
(09:58):
know? Good heavens, he's fainted. Mahon, Mahon ting we got eus
my words, sir. Now,mister Pepper has fallen to right across the
body of the district attorney he lefthim, Denny Aboman, don't let anyone
touch those glasses. Our story continuesin just a moment. And now back
(10:52):
to vodarg Grummond and the story hecalled Dinner of Debt. A hijacker known
as Barnaby Hollen fated information with DistrictAttorney Mahoney for forty eight hours of freedom
to clean up some unfinished business. The same night, Tommy Pepper noted crime
reporter is to be guest of honorat a dinner, but after taking a
(11:13):
drink, Tommy and the district attorneycollapsed. Keep up the first aid treatment
Anny. An ambulance will be hereany moment, yes, sir, mister
Pepper, mister Pepper, he's comingto Captain Drummond good. I can't say
as much for Mahoney. N he'sn'tbad sheep. Wait, Wait a moment,
Barman. No, no, it'sno use, there's no pulse,
(11:37):
no breath, his heart stop. The district attorney's dead. Mister Pepper is
going to be all right, sirTommy, Tommy Pepper, can you hear
me? Trumman, what happened?Someone must have poisoned your drinks. Lie
still now. In a moment,we'll put you in an ambulance and take
you to the hospital. But Mahony, I saw him fall. Where is
(12:00):
he? He's dead? Lone?He dead? It's terrible. Who did
it? Tommy? Do you know? Might have been Barnaby Mullins or anybody.
Lots of rats hated me and Mahoneytell me who is Barnaby Mulleins And
why do you suspect him? Well, it was Mullins on the phone today.
He threatened me. I investigated hishijacking record. Mahoney was to prosecute
(12:26):
him next week. I take it. Then he's out on bail. Where
can I find him? How heused to hide out? At Cornwell Arms,
apartment foury. Thanks, Denny, and I'll go there at once and
be careful. One's this tricky?Dangerous and desperate? Here we are,
(13:03):
Denny, Yes, sir, apartmentforty skeleton gye, ser, try the
door first? Why it was unlocked? All right inside? You better be
prepared, mister Pepper said, thisMulleins person was a desperando. Good heavens
luck. It's the ape man.Hello, Dodo. Oh, Dodo is
(13:26):
Barnaby Mullins here? Mollot the roomyou don't see in the other room.
Thanks, that's the way, Denny. This is fantastic, sir. Why
is that creature here in the apartmentof the man suspected of poisoning his master?
Open the door, Denny? Ishis a light switch? Well,
(13:48):
that must have been Barnaby Mullins.Hang with the neck from an overhead pipe.
Oh, dear, hang with hisown belt, sir, Do do
he's gone? Sir explains that Dodohang Mullins for poisoning Tommy Pepper. I
doubt that Denny Dodo would have strangledMullins and noticed the evidence here that chair
lying on the floor. Oh,I see it now, sir. It
(14:09):
was suicide. Mullins hanged himself. Our closer inspection will show a floor on
that theory, how high would theseat of the chair be from the floor
if the chair were upright, abouttwo feet sir. Now look at the
body, how high off the floorof the feet? The feet, well,
the toes are about three and ahalf feet from the floor. Then
it would have been physically impossible forMullins to have hanged himself. Will you
(14:33):
telephoning, sir, Police headquarters,Denny, Oh oh, yes, hello,
Police Headquarters. This is Captain Drummond. Yes, I've just found Barnaby
Mullins murdered an apartment four E atthe Cornwall Arms. That's right what I
(14:54):
see? Well, thanks, Iwill, but please, sir, you
gave the police some information in themaybe they gave you some they did.
Denny Mullin's partner, a person namedSpike Saunders, shot his way out of
jail three hours ago. He killeda god. Let's be going going awhere
to the hospital to see Tommy Pepper. Spike Saunders is on the rampage.
We must cover every angle, youknow. I dislike to press a personal
(15:28):
issue, sir, but my feetup killing. Yes, Jenny I know
how you feel. I'm sorry wecouldn't find a taxicab to bring us here
to the hospital. It's impossible thatthis Spike Saunders would invade a police like
this, especially with the police onhis head. That shot seem to come
from Tommy Pepper's room. Hurried uphere, sir. The running is extremely
difficult at this point, sir.All right, here's the room, Oh
(15:50):
dear, mister Pepper isn't here. There's a terrorist outside. Look out there?
All right, Tom's quite ware. He's under the bed, but still
alive. Tommy, who fired thatshot? I don't know. I was
seeing when I heard one of theFrench windows open. It's squeaked to me
that meant dangers, So I don'tinto the bed anything outside, Denny,
Yes, sir, this gun apparentlythe assassin dropped on the terrace as he
ran away. Another narrow escape foryou, Tommy. I'm an old hand
(16:12):
at narrow escapes, drumm and thatmay be, but I think you need
a change of venue. There havebeen two poisonings. Barnaby Mullins has been
hanged and Spike Saunders has shot hisway out of jail. Thanks for catching
me up on current offense. Thesaunas is on a loaser with the murder
of a goud hanging over him.And in that case, I think I'll
move out of here if you'll getme my clothes, Denny. They're in
(16:33):
that closet. Yes, sir,I'll get them, Denny. Here.
Here we are, shoes, socks, underwear. Let me help you with
that hospital night gut, mister Pepper. Thanks Denny, shirt tie, trousers.
I have them, sir. Allright, you can go along with
Denny to our suite in the hotel. Meanwhile, I'll gather up the loose
(16:53):
ends of the case. Yeah, here's your coke. You're not coming to
the hotel, sir, Not justnow, Denny, there were a few
details I want to clean up.Well, Drummond, thanks for your help.
I'll see you so now, Yes, both of us will, sir.
HM. Plaster on the wall issoft and the bullet didn't go far.
(17:15):
It should be easy to dig itout. Peculiar angle of entrance.
There are no pardon me, sir, why did you come back, Denny?
Well, mister Pepper considered himself fartoo capable to need a chaperone.
On his way to the hotel,he insisted that I come back here.
He went on alone, so Igave him my key. All right,
(17:36):
we'll follow him in a few moments. Yes, sir, you see,
I believe that Tommy Pepper will neednot one chaperone, Denny, but two.
(18:06):
Go ahead, Denny, Yes,sir, I'll switch on the lights.
Well, we've had visitors. Myword, the room is wrecked,
Tommy. Tommy Pepper isn't here. He's been kidnapped. From the look of
the room, there was a fiercestruggle before someone overpowered him and carried him
off. Yes, it appears thatway. Please, sir, What do
(18:27):
we do now? Uh? Atthe moment, I believe we'll both raise
our hands high and raise our Whatthe world are you talking about? There's
a man at the door, Dennywith a gun. Good heavens, it's
Dodo Poor. Call me Pepper. That's what we'd like to know. Dodo,
(18:48):
call me well, call me Pepper. Oh, dear, listen,
Dodo. Mister Pepper came here forsafety, but someone must have kidnapped him
from me, Pepper. He doesn'tbelieve he now see how mister Dodo Spike
Saunders escape from jail. Probably tookmister Pepper Away, Spike Soilders free Spike,
(19:11):
Conder, Snack, Tommy Pepper,Oh dog cat Spike Saunders. Thank
goodness, he's putting away the gun. Dodo, Can you find Saunders?
Go go follow by Sunder dark timeshere hide and a call and they wear
(19:33):
How we'll go along with you tohelp you do help? Oh? I
word? Sorry you knocked him out. Yes, Danny, Now you and
I will visit the colony warehouse withouta chaperone. It's all right now,
(20:08):
sir. I cut out that bitof glass and reached through and fixed the
burglar alarm, just as you toldme you should have been a burglar.
Denny. Thank you, sir.I'll raise the window. Go on in
word, the warehouse is full.Yes, I noticed the stencils on the
(20:30):
case of Denny posary, shoes, cigarettes, machine tools, can goods my
word, this must be the lootof those hijackers. Mulleins and Saunders.
Probably get them up. Oh,dear, it's Tommy Pepper. Tommy,
it's Drummond. Denny. Oh didyou get here, Drummond? How'd you
get in? Oh? There areways and means, Tommy, tell us
(20:53):
about this warehouse. Oh, it'sa storage depot for Hijacksavidian goods nothing but
the best, of course, Ifyou'll stay with me, I think we
can grab the other member of thehijacking team. Spike Saunders is coming in
my word, how do you knowthat? And watching through a window.
Just drove up outside in another car, not the one he was using when
he aked me out of your hotelsuite. What happened to you there?
(21:14):
And I just got in when Saunda'sarrived. He slugged me and started to
take me for a ride. Wasmy good luck that his car blew attire.
I was conscious by that time,so I got away. You're lucky,
you're telling me I wouldn't be alied to day if I wasn't.
Uh, Drummond got a gun?Not tonight and lie low when the fireworks
starts. Saunders won't give up withouta fight. Perhaps you better give me
your gun, Tommy. Taking acriminal into custody is more in my line
(21:37):
than yours. No, not tonight. I've been poisoned, shot at and
slugg and I want revenge. Wecon get him up? Sonis where?
So what happens to me? Irun into Tommy pepperin into dark that's right,
sndas, and my gun was upfirst. I walk in a straight
line toward my flashlight and keep himup. Sure, let's see your light.
(22:00):
Well, my finger must have slipped. Did I hurt? You?
Tell me? I shooting the spike? Shut the flashlight out of my hand.
Now it's my turn. You gotme a rat right read basket?
All right, Tommy, you wonyour due. I almost lost it,
all right, Drummond. You canhave my gun from here, and it's
(22:22):
your show. Thanks, It's myshow until we get to police headquarters where
we'll book you for murder. Whatare you saying? Yes, sir,
what are you saying? Well,Denny, you see this cycle of poisoning
and murder began just after Barnaby Mullinsmade a swan statement of the district attorney.
I'm following you, sir. Imerely want to get out my flashlight.
I don't like this darkness. Yeah, that's better. Your real talent,
(22:45):
Tommy, was blackmail. You usethe information you picked up about rackets
to extort money from crooks. Willyou confirm that? Confirm that? Denny?
Oh, I'm sorry, sorry, knocked the light out of my hand.
Rumbon you were too fast for yourinformation. Now you haven't got a
light making an arrest of the docks. Pretty tough, is you? Forget
Tommy, I've got your gun unarmed. One correction, drumming. I just
(23:11):
picked up Saunder's gun. He won'tneed it anymore. Hit the floor,
yes, sir, One other littlepoint, drumming. My gun is only
one cartridge left in it. Therewere two. I used one on Saunders.
You've got just one shot to fire. I've got plenty in this gun,
have you ah? I missed you? Huh? Why don't you drive
(23:36):
the one shot you've got? Drummond? You might make up bull Eye by
America. Please, There's only onelive cartridge left in his gun. In
this gun, and Tommy's moving aroundin the dock. Back to the climax
(23:59):
of our story in just a moment, and now back to Bulldog Grummond in
(24:19):
the colony warehouse, a depot forHijacksavinian guns. Grummond and Denny are peering
in the darkness. Grummond has onelive cartridge in his gun. Tommy Pepper
has more. Man Trummond, whydon't you shoot? You might hit me.
Of course it's none of my business, but do you think you might
hit him, as he said,Denny, I might score a bulls eye
(24:40):
by a miracle. I'm saving thislast shot. But what can we do,
sir? I think you had betterstart creeping? Creeping, Sir,
My feet are aching damp crawled Dennyon your hands and knees while I talk
to Tommy. You'll know where heis by his voice. Do you want
me to find himself? Tackle him? No? No, get behind him.
Those wooden cases are stacked. Iget behind a roll of him.
(25:00):
Oh, I understand. Get behinda row of cases and behind him.
That's it. Get moving now.I'll make him talk so you can locate
him in the dark. And thena mighty heave hole on the cases.
Yes, I'll do my best, sir. All right, Tommy, how
about it? Tommy? Yeah?Drummond, you ready to surrender? Not
(25:22):
yet. You've committed three murders.I don't intend to make a fourth at
your little game. Tell me something, Drumming. How did you know that
I murdered Mullins. I was inthe hospital when you found him. You
hanged him before you poisoned the bottleof Kimmel for mahoney, and then you
(25:44):
faked your own poisoning, and inthe hospital you fired a shot from your
own gun into the wall. You'requite intelligent, Drumming. How did you
figure it out with your help?Tommy? I didn't help you at the
hospital. I got your clothes foryou. The District Attorney's speech was in
your coat pocket, the speech youstole from him when you fell across him
(26:07):
in the private room. It makesvery interesting reading. Keep talking, Drummond,
gladly from what Mullins told him.The DA knew the truth, he
would have exposed you in his speechat the banquet. All right, Drummond,
Now I know just where you are. That's all I want to do.
I did it, sir. He'spinned underneath those evy cases and I'm
watching him very close. A nicepiece of work, Denny. You deserve
(26:30):
a rich reward. Well, inthat case, there's something I'd like very
much. Let's go home where Ican take off my shoes. And now
(27:45):
here is Budar Grummond to tell usabout next week's story. At a carnival,
a gypsy fortune teller predicts Denny's future. She foretells a knight of dire
happenings, and before morning her prophecycomes true. Denny and I meet some
interesting people, a sideshow ticket taker, a famous performer on the high trapeze,
(28:12):
and two corpses which refuse to liestill. A mad killer lurks in
the background. I call the storymurder Carnival. Be sure to listen,
won't you? And so into thenight walks Bulldog Drummon, seeking you adventure
(28:42):
and excitement. The next adventure withBulldog Drumming will be heard over most of
these stations next week at the sametime. This is the mutual broadcasting system.
(29:18):
Welcome Back. Nineteen forty five wasthat rare time when programs were sponsored
by don't buy stuff you don't need, which is kind of the opposite of
most other times in American broadcast history. Now, there would be a major
inflationary period in American history, withinflation eventually peaking at twenty percent in March
(29:47):
of nineteen forty seven, and therewere some reasons for that, some of
which were beyond the realm of normalindividual consumer spending choices. Sometimes the best
you can do is mitigate against thosesort of things, particularly when you're dealing
with big issues that are beyond beingable to be totally controlled. I will
(30:11):
say the opening scene with Mullins comingto the district attorney seemed odd because both
of them should have been a littlebit like, maybe we should have Mullins's
lawyer here, given that he's aboutto face trial. Seemed like a pretty
simple case with a fairly obvious conclusion. There was so much that pointed to
(30:37):
Tommy's guilt. I'd have been surprisedif he wasn't crooked. The first clue
was when he was called a doublecrosser by Mullins, which implied he'd been
in on something. Denny this weekhad a case of ben Romero syndrome,
which is what I call it whenthe supporting character to the detective spends a
bunch of time complaining about ailments, particularly in his feet. It seems like
(31:02):
it happens a lot with Ben,but my memory might be exaggerating. All
right, Well, listener comments andfeedback now, and we start on YouTube
where Ryan sar Rides regarding the subwaymurder case. He says, sounds like
Filo Vans is announcing go figure.Well, Ryan, thanks for the comment,
(31:25):
and that highlights that the announcer onmany of these episodes, not today's.
It sounded like this was more ofa mutual announcer. I think that
these programs were originated on Mutual butthen syndicated nationwide by Frederick zev And I
(31:45):
believe for those that's where you getto hear Jackson Beck as the announcer.
And while we might think of JacksonBeck as file of VANSI just because we've
heard him in the past year, and that le Beck was more than anything
else in his career an announcer. He has one thousand, five hundred and
(32:08):
two entrees in the Radio Gold Index, and one thousand and five of those
are announcing credits. Now by default, on Bulldog Drumming, his announcing work
is somewhat limited, but on otherprograms he was far more vital and integral.
(32:31):
The Adventures of Superman is a greatexample. In fact, oftentimes when
people talk about Beck in old timeradio, they talk about him as the
announcer on the Adventures of Superman. There are so many things that Superman does
that are very visual that don't necessarilytranslate well to radio, and Beck's voice
(32:57):
really carried those stories forward. Butat the same time, he was also
a capable actor. You know,he did lead work on things like not
only File Advance, but he alsowas a later actor to play the role
of Gregory Hood when the series movedto ABC, and he also played the
(33:20):
lead on an anthology program called BrownstoneTheater, where each week he would appear
in an adaptation of an older play. But he was immensely talented as a
character actors. We heard on thatparticular episode of Bulldog Drumm and it's like,
(33:43):
yeah, I can announce it.Oh, you need me to create
two more characters on the site,Sure, no problem. And of course
on the Adventures of Superman, inaddition to being the announcer, he created
the role of Beanie Martin, acopyboy. And then I also have a
five star review from Alexis of theepisode Murder Visits Venus. Of all the
(34:09):
Radio Detectives series musical introductions, BulldogDrama seems to be the least unique.
The audio is quite poor, butstill understandable. Well thanks for the comment,
Alexis. I will say that I'venever actually thought much about the music.
Essentially Bulldog Drama. You know, they've got the you know, great
(34:32):
narration, particularly when you've got anepisode where Jackson Beck is reading, you
know, the out of the fogout of the night and into his American
adventures and then the you know, really action packed sound effects at the start.
But I think you're probably right themusic is a bit generic all things
(34:53):
considered. Now, I will sayon sound quality for this series, we're
really blessed to have this particular episode. Appreciate again Radial Archives for providing this
week's episode. And we've got someepisodes where we've got high quality programs that
(35:15):
are available. This one came offof Radio Archives Treasures Volume sixteen, and
we'll have another one from that setwhen we get into the nineteen forty seven
episodes. But then we will havea few episodes of this series that are
just like whatever is listenable and audibleshape that's been floating on the internet for
(35:37):
a few years. It does goback to the challenge of doing this series.
There are quite a few programs onlinethat are pretty well collected with a
good canon of high quality circulating episodes. Things like Dragnett, Johnny Dollar,
Broadways, My Beat are all examplesof that bulldog drama. Not so much,
(36:01):
it's just trying to sort through thisourselves as best we can through the
surviving episodes. But I appreciate yourcomments, Alexis Well. Now it is
time for us to thank our Patreonsupporter of the day, and I want
to go ahead and thank Javon.Jevon has been one of our Patreon supporters

Guoden Friday Nighten, Yeah, that'sright, say lieutenant. Remember that night
in the PL finals. I wasjust kidding Jack fighting Feather. Lieutenant here
(37:05):
was in my car. What aboutFriday? You're gonna take this BREENI oh,
who knows? They were quoting godsyesterday. Danny Terry Studa wanted to
take you. You should have seenthat PL final Jack. It was before
I know how to use my right. I win that final with just my
left hand. Right, Lieutenant,Oh no, I'm more interested in talking
about Friday Night. Kid. Jacktells me you win, you get a
(37:25):
crack at the title. Yeah, that's right, that's great, kid.
I know you'll win. I'll bebetter than you. You better grab yourself
a shower, yeah, Lieutenant.Yeah, you never can tell about fight,
you know. Lieutenant. What's thematter. Well, it's just that
I wouldn't want you to lose anymoney. But hey, shut up,
