Hathaim Al Ghais, Segretario Generale dell'OPEC, ha recentemente avvertito l'Agenzia Internazionale dell'Energia (IEA) che non dovrebbe scoraggiare gli investimenti nell'industria petrolifera, affermando che è vitale per la crescita economica. Come se il macellaio ti dicesse di continuare a consumare carne 3 volte al giorni. Questo forse sembra contraddire l'impegno di mantenere le emissioni al di sotto dell'aumento di 1,5°C e il consenso scientifico sull'impatto negativo delle emissioni di CO2 sul clima. Nel frattempo, l'IEA ha prodotto un rapporto che descrive le azioni necessarie che i governi devono intraprendere per rimanere entro l'aumento di 1,5°C e l'impatto sulla creazione di lavoro. Il rapporto evidenzia l'importanza di investire in batterie avanzate, idrogeno e tecnologie di cattura della CO2. L'IEA suggerisce inoltre di porre fine agli investimenti nei combustibili fossili per raggiungere gli obiettivi climatici a partire da questo anno.
