Maybe I have the scenario. Yeah, I will read the scenario.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
It's a laundry list of its Yeah we can.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Yeah, we can talk about that and and it's great

great time. So everyone checked out that that episode.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
A busy week for the Cromaniacs, coming off of the
round table with San Diego's San Diego put the football's
two balls and a mic crew Tony exhibiting multiple personality
disorder that night just being two balls and Mike Tony
also be Chromaniacs. Tony at the same time, not me.
(02:03):
I didn't have any multiple personality disorder. I was only
one person at a time at that moment.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
That was great.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Go check it ouf. You don't know what we're talking about.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Yeah, yeah, Sometimes it's better to watch on video.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
And in this case it was and remains.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
But if you know.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
As we get to the housekeeping at the top here
of this episode, episode thirteen of the Chromaniacs, all once
again it's funny. This is the main episode, but it's
also kind of the middle episode of the week because
we had Monday's Roundtable, which served as sort of a
post game show for the victory two to one at
(02:44):
San Jose. Saturday, Portland comes to town. Postmatch coverage after
that one is done on The Chromaniacs, but here in
between an opportunity to talk about Leo Duru and to
pre leave you the match. That's pretty much what we're
here to do today on this episode of The Chromaniacs.

(04:17):
It's okay, it's all right, but we thank you for
being here anyways, we appreciate like the half a cent
that we made off of you skipping and hitting plus
fifteen through the ad. Okay, the window, the world famous
transfer window is creeping closed, like the roof at Rogers
(04:39):
Center as a rainstorm is coming in in Toronto.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
It's just.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
It's closing up.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
But swooping in like Indiana Jones reaching back to grab
the hat. Tyler Heaps reaches back to grab Leo Duru
Alex Paanya, tell me about the transfer. What are we spending?
What's the deal?
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Who is Leo Duru.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
And Leo Duro from Blackburn Rovers. He's a full back,
which I think it was what the last episode we
did on Chrimniacs. We were talking about like what we
really wanted or needed, and right back was on the list,
and look at that we got it right back And
(05:28):
it seems like he looks like the type of right
back that this team needs. He's very you know, he's quick,
he's aggressive, he's going towards the other the opposition's box.
He's trying to get across in trying to get a
pass through. It seems like that really does fit our
(05:51):
style of play. So that's really good. That checks the
box right there what we're looking for. And you know,
he's a very exciting young player twenty years old. Right
now he's on loan, it seems, and I looking at
at thanks for our friends. Over at section nineteen oh four,
(06:14):
John had a little a little article from across the
Pond about his contract situation and it kind of left
fans a little confused because he's actually signed with Blackburn
until next year, until June, and that's when the loan.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
Is officially over.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
So they were kind of left the little confused of like, wait,
what's going on? I thought this was going to be
alone until the end of this season twenty twenty five,
but no, it actually.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Might be extended.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Well, it probably will be extended on the SDFC terms
and then potentially picked up and bought by SDFC money wise,
not really sure. They don't announce these things. No one
announces these things. They're not very transparent. But I would
have to say he's a twenty twenty year old at most,
(07:08):
he's probably making one hundred and twenty five thousand, and
that's the U twenty two slot level. If he's being
picked up for that slot. So and plus I'm guessing
there will be a lone fee or a lone fee
slash transfer fee associated next year with this, so that
(07:31):
that cost is just going to go up.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
But still exciting signing. I really do like it.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
He's a U twenty US National men's team player and
another another guy, another guy they're bringing in from from
the youth development system for the US, So lots lots
to be excited and happy about if you're that type
of fan. I think that makes seven US National Men's
(08:02):
league player that we have that might be an issue,
uh towards October when they're actually playing in Chile.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
For the World for their.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
World Cup, that's correct, So yeah, that yeah, I mean,
look at bon Bonbino might be playing in this and
maybe some other players. So we we, yeah, we we're
gonna have to look out when these U twenties are
picked picked up by the US men's national team.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Tony, when when Mikey Vadas and Tyler Heaps got together
for the first time, did Mikey just give him a
Christmas list from his time at us m n T
under twenty and just said, Okay, here here are the players.
These are the players I would like to have off
of that roster.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah, and I mean these are the the the players
that Mikey Vadas knows, right, because you need some sort
of expertise to be able to compete against managers and
tactics at the professional level, something that Mikey Vadas doesn't have.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
So why not lean.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Into your expertise, which is the under twenty projects and
these players that are coming up and and really utilizing
them correctly. And you know, it's serendipitous, it's happenstance that
you get a right back. But you know, now this
is the adding into a locker room of three injured
right backs. So had Agi was still healthy by the
(09:31):
time that these talks are being had to begin with,
right this was always going to happen whether or not had.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Agi goes down with that.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Uh it is Mike Vadas did say that had Agi
will be out for a couple of weeks. It does
look it's a shoulder injury. And if you watch that
San Jose game, you know it's it's moving pretty gingerly,
uh towards the end, just holding it over to the side.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Uh. I do believe it's going to be a separated shoulder.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
But again, he should be out in a couple for
a couple of weeks, but not expect to be out
for the whole seat. You add Leo Duru and this
is again a speedster on the right back who has
that technic technical skill to move the ball forward and
also be able to come back and track back with
what we saw with Willi Kumalol and what that type
of player brought on the right hand side. But yeah,
(10:16):
this is also just you can't take all the US
young men's national team players right, so some will stay back,
but you know it's going to be an interesting time
come October for sure.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
So hearing this, Alex, the idea of pairing Duru with
his speed on right flank and then Bombino on left flank,
you're starting to create lanes of attack. Now you've got
ta Verskov in the middle and the Vartsen props possibly
up top in the middle. It looks like you're really
creating lanes of attack Lozano and Dryer on each side
(10:50):
where STFC can be dangerous in all three thirds.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Yeah, that's correct, because I think they were favoring that
left sidle lot with Bombino, and it's easy to try
to as a defense just trying to like block those
lanes and just make them try to switch over to
the other side. And because you know, to be honest,
uh Rahoven would would would take it only so far
(11:17):
and and not really connect with the other players up top.
And I think Bombino does a way better job at that.
And now it's gonna be a doer's job now.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
On the on the on the right side.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
So yeah, you're gonna have plenty of other options to
try to play the way you want. It seems like
this will be now like a more complete team and
like that that's gonna be pretty pretty dangerous. Uh uh,
you know, late now in the season. So I mean
that's why I'm excited. It seems like that was just
(11:53):
like the missing piece and we we have it, hopefully
Herngi's healthy.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
I did.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
I did like what I saw for a little bit
with him. But yeah, does does anyone feel like we
do have a complete team or do you feel like
there's there's like a little bit missing here? Because I
do look at from the top down, we have some
(12:19):
depth options, you know, we we certainly have younger options,
But does anyone feel like this is a complete team
heading towards a playoff spot.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
I mean it's it's still hurt.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
It's not healthy like it like some of these wounds
are being freshly licked into health. Looking up the top
and nine and Marcus and Varsen and what he's gone through,
Patty McNair coming through. So in terms of complete yeah,
but they're batter there's this is a team that's gone
through it. And did hear from actually Franklin Negaty who
pointed out that usually an MLS at this time around,
(12:56):
like these games don't get any lighter. These these games
are impact games and they're definitely now into that almost
playoff territory to the feel it with Duru, like I
mean added, it's a great move with Verhoven, I saw
what he's able to do. But if there's one thing
that I didn't like about Verhoven, it's just like twenty
minutes in he looked absolutely gassed.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Whether or not he wasn't.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
This is a body language just sort of thing where
he looked like he was winded, and he looked the
way he tracked back, and yeah, he was caught off guard.
But you know, it's just another added piece here in defender.
But I like where this is going a complete team.
I'm not too convinced on that one.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Well, let me ask you a question along those lines, gentlemen,
because one other player from the transfer window who haven't
really seen yet is Corey Baird. Could Corey Baird take
Thomas on Hell's minutes down the stretch? Would that be
(13:57):
an appropriate move for those Chromados given that on Hell's
received a lot of time. Now you don't have a
STFC two to go dump him down to to get
regular play. You probably aren't going to move him off
of the rosters. So from a player development level, there's
that to consider. But then I would return the question
(14:19):
of why did you get Corey Bert if you're not
going to use him and not going to play him,
and if he's a defender who can be a little
bit more creative as a reserve on the wing, seems
like you're still going to have minutes in there. I
don't think I Vartsn is ready for a full ninety yet.
So do you guys think that would be a step
toward completion having Baird take on Hell's minutes.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yes, but it's still a question, right will it work?
Speaker 3 (14:49):
And this is one of the only players that's a
little bit different from the youngsters that, hey, are they
going to be proved?
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Are they going to prove themselves?
Speaker 3 (14:56):
And it seems like they are because they play in
a certain mindset. They know a style modern player. I
think I mentioned something like in order to play the
modern game, you need modern players and Baird is halfway
between there, so can he adapt?
Speaker 2 (15:09):
That's what mikeybod is hoping.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I just would love and I'm pretty sure everybody in
as a San Diego FC supporter just wants this Tomas Aankele,
the Tomas Ankle that was part of the first game
in the those I said against a La Galaxy that
made that beautiful run, Like that guy still exists somewhere,
and I really think that that's gonna be the difference
(15:33):
come playoffs. It's gonna be a Tomas Ankle goal that's
gonna be the assist or something that he doesn't playoffs,
it's gonna make everything in the regular season kind of
be forgotten. But is he the answer to get him there?
I don't think so. I think it will be Baird.
And this this is now a signal too for Tomas
(15:53):
Ancle to maybe take advantage a little bit more of
his opportunities coming up.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Yeah, I think it's going to be in Bartson will
get the minutes later on, once he's like fully ready,
and we're going to see that starting line of Chokey
and Bartson and and uh Dryer and and beer will
will probably probably be that first option that gets the
(16:20):
call to go in.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
For yeah, one one of those three when whatever the
situation dictates.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
And I think, yeah, he's gonna He's probably gonna get
the call over on Hell and if they really need
some more some pressure legs and on Hell will get
the call after that.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
And I think that's the way I see it.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Well, then I think we are a step closer to
being a much more complete team. You know, as I've
been saying for a while, I think in Vartsen is
the guy who has to be the answer at nine.
He clearly was the answer in San Jose. That was
as a super sub how a Lawsky esque of him
just come off the bench instantly create two goals only
(17:07):
cal uh.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
But there was a guy in front of Ilowski in
FC norseland Way and that named.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Marcos in Varson. So you know, again perspective throughout all
this right.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
There, was a guy at STFC ahead of markets, so
you know, just you know, hopefully everything's good from Milan
over in Philly. Okay, So who's most upset about Leo
Duru being here? Fairhaven?
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Yeah, we're Haven. Yeah, probably, I mean I don't know you.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
Yeah, I mean I think he was probably more of
a depth piece anyway.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
And I think Rangi's just happy to be here.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
Yeah, he's he's happy to be here. Yeah, we're hoping.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
I think he's like the odd man out for right now,
and they're gonna give Dura some some chances here late
in the season.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Yeah, I see more Lao Duro jerseys being purchased than
Harangue for jerseys, even though they're both loans.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
So again, make a a make a sound investment. Everybody
out there, just you know, don't fall in love with
your loans exactly.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
At least the ones that don't have an option to buy.
It's like naming your lease car. Yeah, like, don't don't
name your lease car. Yeah, this one's named Jessica.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Jessica left me after three years. I gave her two
hundred and sixty nine a month. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Some of these rent a cars too, So don't worry
your rentals or your lease cars.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Just don't don't give them pet names. Let's hear from
Leo Duru himself from hills out at San Diego FC
training grounds and his perspective on joining those Chromatos, which
I'm sure he mentioned as a nickname back name.
Speaker 6 (19:12):
Obviously a new kind of club.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
It's the league.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
And the pathway that they've they've given me and kind
of the information that the coach has spoke to me
about and how they play and how I'd come into
that kind of style of play. You know, it's just
such an exciting time for a young player, young fall
back like me that wants to get forward, get assist,
get goals, and you know that's what you're looking for
the team. And yeah, the place is amazing. You know,
(19:38):
it's a lot of different to England. The son's going
to get a bit of getting used to. It's very
very hot, but no, I can't complain. You know, the environment,
the atmosphere around the club is just like electric. It's
very easy to kind of walk into that change room
because all the boys are really nice, really happy, inviting,
and yeah, I'm just ready to got some games, go
(20:01):
and get some wins.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
In his defense, singing hills can get pretty hot. That's
about It's about the best East County has to offer.
So I'm sure he's already seen some ninety five and
some ninety seven out there.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
Just just a little fun, just detail with like how
this is still an expansion team into a brand new team,
people finding things out for the first time.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Today's the first.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Day that I do believe San Diego of c is
moving training an hour before just because of the temperature, right,
And this is they're very specific with how they do
trainings and the times they do trainings. They want to
match up a lot of the times with the times
that they would be training anywhere else in the country,
so they time it specifically for that and align it
the day before for the game time.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
But yeah, just it's at nine am out there.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
I do believe it was eighty eighty nine ninety And
that's in the shade, right, It's it's not it's not
Blackburn or Manchester when he was where he was born.
But Leo, you know, he's he's getting that opportunity. He
wants those minutes. He's hungry, he wants to be here.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
He wants to come forward. He wants to get assists,
he wants to score goals, and based on what I'm
seeing on that freeze frame right there, he's here to
break hearts as well. What a handsome, confident young man
who's got a beautiful accent. That's y yep, yeah, I
think I think the Gaslam district is in big trouble.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
When Leo dur comes rolling through.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
Oh man, it's great to hear that Manchester English accent.
And he's got to get used to this weather. Go
hang out in the beach. Get yeah, I get acclimated here?
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Yeah, what should tell me? Be nice here? It's quite hole.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
And it's part of and you know again, I would
hope that they may want to invest in the I
was talking to this with Abe actually, just like hey,
uh we should they should look into them doing a
indoor facility. Yeah, you still have the outdoor facility, but
you need to climate control these things, right, Like if
you travel to the East coast right now, you think
(22:18):
you'll find some pretty tepid weather. So I'm not sure
how grud of this could go from one hundred and
one degrees to forty I.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
Know, I know an indoors facility close by there's one
in ocean side.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
Yeah, frontwave for arena. Is that what was gonna do?
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Or should we just go to the ke YMCA. They
could work with the soccers, I mean approve their.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Touch work and some touch along the way.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
I'm excited for this. I do think we all did
talk about adding another defender along the way.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
Now.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
I thought it might be a veteran presence. I'll just
reassert the one thing that I would say could be
the achilles heel of this San Diego FC team is
that in the back, if you don't get you know,
fully returned, there are two veterans back there. You've got
just so much youth, so much youth and anexperience and
(23:16):
when things step up, when it gets to a higher level,
that's where you could worry a little bit. Now, if
this club continues along, it's threatening the supporter shield path.
You know, they may not have to leave Snapdragon Stadium
for a while, if at all, you know, until the final.
So exciting, exciting thoughts, But that would be the one thing,
(23:43):
you know. I did think they might bring in one
more veteran voice or steady hand, but I guess you know,
faith in heaps and varas that they like what they're
hearing in their room and they don't want to have
a new voice in that room.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
There's bill two hours left in the transfer window.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Oh is this gonna be a preller type thing? Like
can they all come in in the last five minutes?
Speaker 2 (24:11):
It definitely? Can it definitely?
Speaker 3 (24:13):
And the way that Tyler and company operate, this may
be a deal happening literally overseas and overseas and see
time in Paris it's five three am, so it's still
a business time and it's not you know, if something
was to happen from from Europe over here, like there's
there's still time, but I think the signals are there.
(24:36):
Like how would you classify this transfer window anyways? If
it ends now? Like was it good?
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Man?
Speaker 2 (24:41):
It was all right? Good bad TVD To me, it's TBD.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
It's it's how do these players, these young players that
you brought in perform and contribute to a club? How
do they contribute to a club's attempt to finish first
and shoot for MLS cut.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
There were a lot of younger acquisitions in this transfer window,
and a lot of acquisitions that are meant for the future.
And that's not just us a lot of a lot
of teams for planning.
Speaker 5 (25:13):
That that this too. That's like how they operate.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
They take this as a great opportunity to add for
the future. And I think that's kind of how Tyler
Heap saw it, Like this is a good chance to
bring in Soma, get Fascus in. Let's let's see what
we can we can do with him.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
Leo.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
Now, we only got one veteran guy so far, and
that's Baird, and there's still two the way I'm counting this,
two senior spots left. You can you can leave those
senior spots alone if you want to. You can carry
(25:55):
eighteen senior spots with you. But with you know, with
some injuries right now, Like wouldn't you want to fill
that the at least get someone in just.
Speaker 5 (26:09):
Just in case.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
And and and to be honest, they do have they
still have plenty of gam and if they don't use
that gam, it's just going to roll over into next year.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
That's how.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Yeah, look at the gam on that team.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
Wow, look at my gam Oh my gam Yeah, all
stacked up nice, nice and neat little piles.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
Yeah, there's still money to blow, so yeah, I mean.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
You you can maybe bring one more person. And and
I think I made this point on our discord discord correct, Uh,
that Baird happened like the day before, so it happened
fairly quickly. There weren't that many rumors around it, so
it happened pretty pretty fast. And and yeah, maybe maybe
(27:02):
Heaps has one more in him and he gets a
deal done before the deadline.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Yes, let me give you a little bit of insight too.
I'll tell you this.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
Other MLS teams aren't a fan of the model that
San Diego f C has, And this is hearing it
from different sources throughout MLS and networking. It's they think
San Diego s has an unfair advantage by even having
and be allowed to go into Mexico. And so this,
you know, just like Intel Miami Beckham and his rolodex
(27:33):
of contacts and MESSI may be very different Jabiir Mascherano
than what Mikey Vadas and Tyler.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
Heaps are able to really negotiate and connect. So that's why.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Also, like maybe there isn't a lot of MLS teams
ready to make a deal with San Diego f C
as well, So there's a little bit of gamesmanship in
all of this. But for a fact, there's I know
there's teams and executives that do not like and are
not okay with San Diego f C having such a
(28:01):
such a good academic start in their in their fulfillment
and how they've gone about it.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
That sounds exactly like a GM we we know very well,
Craig Ye.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
That works for the Padres.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
Yeah, take take the edge you can.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
So in other words, they would have much preferred that
they broke ground on an academy in La Joya as
opposed to Singing hills and the fifty mile radius rules.
Very smart geographic placement. Well, sorry about it. Yeah. Last
thing I'd say on this is we transition is just, uh,
you know, there's something I'm going to always keep in
(28:39):
the back of my mind until it's knocked completely.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
Out of there.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
That we have we haven't cleared the DP you know,
we haven't used that. We've saved some money. So I'm
calling that s for us. Can you guess what that
stands for? Yes, you can guess.
Speaker 7 (28:58):
Oh, saving for salas mm salah salad, saving for salah, well,
saving for salah.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
Well technically technically correct. You don't have to save for sala.
The ownership. The ownership can can pay him whatever you.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Want, just pay whatever. I know.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
So they're saving still, they're just like, you know're not
gonna go all in because they're saving for Sala yea,
saving for Salas four us.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Okay, that's the one thing that I asked, uh, mister
monsour uh in the announcement of MLS, there was that
that that scrum, and he was just kind of being
escorted through and I didn't get a chance to get
a question to him, and I said, don't I'm just
gonna shout it out, hey, mom, And sala comes back, Oh,
Mohammed Salah like he is a great player, a great person,
(29:57):
and you never know, like I think that's one player
that it just makes sense for him to stop by
San Diego first, so many.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Reasons, saving four Salah.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
When will the Sala era begin? I don't know.
Speaker 5 (30:10):
Yeah, we definitely have those discovery rights.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
By the way, wait, there's no way he's not like
number one on the list like already like he like
Tyler Heaps just but each year just renew the list.
Speaker 5 (30:23):
He's number one.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
I'm pretty sure that was a prerequisite of the five
hundred million dollar expansion fee, Like yeah, but I'm first
in line for Mosala.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Portland Timbers coming to town on Saturday. Let's hear what
head coach Mikey Baas had to say with their hour
early to avoid the stinging.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Heat of singing hills.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
Just sing ye, stinging hills.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
What August and September.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
There's a little bit more sting in those hills as
the temperature rises. Let's hear from my favorite coach, the
anti shield Mikey Varas, the man who's honest to a
fault as opposed to the opposite to a fault. Here's
Mikey Varas on their thoughts preparing for the last opponent,
(31:17):
the last one to break the seal, SDFC and Timbers.
All right, Mikey, what do you got accent?
Speaker 8 (31:24):
Portland's a tough opponent. They have a very talented roster.
It's very athletic and dynamic. They're good and open spaces
one by one's. They play with a big build up shape,
so they want to have the ball. They're willing to
play a bit against your press, so there'll be a great,
great challenge. They're really well coached and at the end
of the day, we also want to continue excelling in
(31:48):
some of the things that we've been excelling which we
think we've been pressing really well. Team mentality defense has
been fantastic. We always play with initiative. We have no fight,
no give up mentality here. That's fighting spirit that allows
us to stay in any game. And then we also
know if we can just improve a little bit and
a bit that connection in our breakthroughs and maximize the
(32:12):
chances that we are almost creating. We also know that
we have another gear in terms of some of those
things that we're getting close to hitting. Yeah, with all
the guys that are out injured, we have a great
medical staff, human performance staff that's working day and night
in a really intentional way to get these guys not
only back in the same conditions they left, but in
even better conditions. And they do a great job. Life
(32:35):
is like this, though you can never guarantee when things
are gonna go well for you. When things are not,
all we can do is just focus on the process.
That's what we do. Try to make really informed and
intentional decisions about what we do. And then Leo joining
he's got fantastic athleticism. He comes with a ton of
hunger as a young player to prove a point. He's
looking to make the next step in his career, and
(32:56):
I think that this is the place that provides those
opportunities to hungry, talented players that are that are willing
to do that. So it's all about him training, getting
onboarded with our principal style play, our culture, and the
faster he does that, the faster he'll he'll get an
opportunity to make that impact.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
You know, one thing that just occurs to me, guys
hearing that when I hear Mikey say that to the press,
I feel like I can hear him saying that to
the player in terms of his pitch, saying to Leodoru,
you are ready to take the next step in your career,
and we believe San Diego FC is a place where
you're going to have the opportunity to do that and
where I as the head coach and Tyler as the
(33:38):
sporting director, will give you the minutes and the time
and the space and the attention you know, and the
coaching to be able to take that next step in
your career. And it does lead me back to the
feeling of SDFC as a soccer Hogwarts, you know, like
(34:00):
a training ground, a proving ground. We're gonna create young
wizards and then we're gonna see them disappear, and we're
gonna bring in the next class. And you know, we're
gonna we're gonna kill off a Master of the Dark
Arts every single year.
Speaker 5 (34:16):
So I'm not sure who that will be.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
I hope it won't be Mikey, but uh, you know, nonetheless,
like point being something we've talked about on previous Crimaniacs episodes. Guys,
when I hear that, I'm both encouraged and I'm reminded,
don't fall in love with anybody wearing an STFC uniform.
A big, big part of their goal is to let
(34:38):
these guys grow, squeeze the juice of enthusiasm at a
young age and a young price, and and repeat the process.
Speaker 5 (34:55):
Yeah that's true. I mean for for a guy like Leo.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
I mean you could say that about any of the
young guys. How many minutes are they they were were
they going to get with their team? Here in San Diego,
You're gonna get first team minutes. There isn't a team too.
You're gonna get plenty of opportunities. And I think the
pitch that they sell to them is like it's it's
(35:21):
gonna be the whoever is the best player, that's who's
going to play. And they have shown plenty of examples
of younger guys beating out the veteran guys. Negri is
now on the bench, Lafelson got sent out. This is
just how they roll. And even dos Santos he beat
(35:41):
out a much more like veteran guy for for yeah,
for for being number one, for being the goalkeeper. And
I think that's a good for a young player, Like
I think any young player that really wants to play
and get those valuable minutes and exposure, and they know
that if this goes well for me, I'm gonna go
(36:03):
off to better, to somewhere else, somewhere where I can
get paid more.
Speaker 5 (36:09):
It's just a win win for everybody, right right, Tony.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
Yeah's island to misfit toys in a way, but in
the best way, because these toys are a premium like
really really like top of the line toys that will
then also become collector's item later hopefully. And you know,
it's it's again back to the kind of like a
toy story thing, like in toy story two, when Woody
gets that makeover and he just comes from an old
(36:36):
raggedy toy to the toy into a musicum like these
the into museum. This is the level of coaching that
Mikey Bodis is doing. He's rehabilitating some of these players
made it back to the US men's national team, where
he wouldn't have done that had he been in seta
ego in Europe where people are like, oh, well they're
coming back to MLS and and and they're just coming
(36:58):
back because the level they couldn't help it cut it
over there. Maybe, but if your trajectory is to be
successful as a soccer player and be the best version
of you, maybe you need to take that step back
and really reassess where you're at. And maybe that's the
next step forward in all of this. Right, he's still
on loan. Thank you, San Diego, or thank you San Diego.
I really like what you like what we did here.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
I'm gonna stay here and I'm gonna make sure that
I'm a lifer right just the rest of my career.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
That's what you want to But give that player the
opportunity to I think that's what you're saying Craig is
that it's really an opportunity and that's really a holistic
way of seeing these things. And in the world market
now in sports, where everything again is so business it's
sterile like that's I like that.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
I really like believing it in the individual and giving.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
Them the choice to go ahead and joke, go fly
away or you can you can stay here. It's okay,
We'll be okay, because, like you said, the next batch
is going to be sorted through the sorting hat, and
you know they're they're gonna be placed regardless.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Of and that's just Tyler deciding, here you go, here's
the new people.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
You know.
Speaker 1 (38:03):
The only reason I've brought this up multiple times is
because we aren't currently seeing as casual fans what the
turnover is really gonna look like a year, two years,
three years down the road. This is still year one,
and it feels like the players who are here are
going to be part of our team for so many
(38:23):
years to come, and there's gonna be so much growth
and we're going to grow up with these young players.
Well yes and no. The real answer is they're here
for a good time, not for a long time. A
lot of them and right now mikey Vardas can see
that future and he's speaking to it. He sees the vision,
(38:46):
he can speak to it. But a casual fan hasn't
really seen it in action yet. Milanalaski was the first
shot off the bow, but even he is not the
same as a twenty year old like like Leo Duru,
you know, or a Luca Bombino, a young player who
(39:07):
you could be like, Wow, this guy's gonna be a
we we just sold him to who for what?
Speaker 5 (39:14):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (39:14):
We got more gam?
Speaker 5 (39:17):
You know? I want that player. I don't want gam.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
But this is part of the churn of SDFC, and
I think a year eight SDFC fan or a year
ten SDFC fan is gonna understand this. I think for
a year one SDFC fan, it's gonna still hit you
like a punching bag bouncing back at you unless you're
(39:41):
ready for it. And that's why I'm kind of bringing
it up, is that this is what they're planning to do.
They're planning to move and churn, They're planning to grow
and sell anything for those fans.
Speaker 3 (39:53):
Sorry, So like even those fans that have been watching
soccer forever, they watched the gun makers.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
They watched Premier League Weekend wake out.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
What's happening in San Diego is still so different from
even that that even those people don't know what's going on.
Those are the people that are complaining, well, why don't
we have Thomas Mueller? Why didn't we get you know,
so and so? Would you rather have Thomas Mueller and
have whoever namesake that you can buy a San Diego
(40:20):
jersey that says Thomas Mueller, Great, that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
But be in eighth place? Is that a fair trade off?
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Or would you rather be writing the right literally writing
the lightning in first place and breaking records and literally
one game away from clinching playoffs. It's it's insane, like
would which would you rather? I think most people would say,
you know what, I can't. I think I'm okay here.
I think we're fine here.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
I mean I'm okay in first place? Like that, That's
what That's what I want. Uh yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
And it's a system. It it's you know, it's gonna
deter fans, it's gonna bring fans in.
Speaker 3 (41:04):
It is what it is.
Speaker 5 (41:06):
And I'm mixed. I am I am all in on
the young players.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
I think that's The very exciting thing about this team
compared to another team that's in the city, that we're
going to see young players come up, they're going to develop,
and we're gonna, yeah, we're gonna see like the whole
whole process, the whole way where they're gonna be here
playing games, but then they're gonna be sold to another team,
just like Luca. Luca is already getting calls from West
(41:33):
Brom and he's gonna be be going out to Europe
and we're gonna be like, hey, that was our player.
I remember him playing here in San Diego, and you're
gonna have all the stories and of watching him. But
now he's playing in in the Premier league, in La Liga,
in Champions League.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
That I think that's the goal for any player play.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
At the highest level, but it's not the for a
fan is see a player disappear and go to another
league that I have to wake up at four am
to watch and say, oh, good for you. You're playing
on the left wing for a team I don't care about. No,
we want our players to be here and succeed. So
(42:16):
just something to think about for the future, because that
is what the future holds for San Diego FC. It's sales,
it's transfers, and it's being happy that you help them
grow and learn how to fly. And the very last
thing I would say about that is the sales pitch
(42:37):
is so much more appealing and appetizing to a casual
fan when it's paired with being in first place. If
the sales pitch was being made in eleventh place or
seventh place, it's not as much. It could be contested
a couple of years down the road. First place, everyone's in,
(43:01):
everyone's in. Oh, so we're gonna win and we're gonna
do all this. Okay, great, well what about Hey, the
system's working great. We just haven't had the results on
the field this year.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
But we believe and where we are with our.
Speaker 1 (43:13):
Infrastructure in our system, that sales pitch is coming in
a future year of San Diego FC. That that doesn't
finish the way that this dream season is looking to finish. Now,
Can the beginning of the Portland Timbers rivalry be a
success for San Diego FC. That's what we'll find out
Saturday night at snap Dragon Stadium, an unnamed rivalry. First
(43:41):
question on our on our little rundown here is should
this matchup have a name, I mean not yet.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Let it happen. Yeah, like I mean the Timber palm tree.
I mean I don't know.
Speaker 3 (43:57):
Like it goes into different flora and fauna discussions at
this point, and I think we're not there.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
Let's let's let's see some spiciness on the field first.
Speaker 4 (44:08):
Well, you know when when you're you're talking about sports
and you're talking about the connections between San Diego and Portland,
there is a connection.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
And Craig, you know this very well.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
The San Diego Patters had a pc L team where
the current Portland Timbers play in Providence Park, called the
Portland Beavers. Yeah you want to you want to throw
some beaver cut? Yeah, it could be the Beaver Cup.
Speaker 5 (44:39):
It could be. Yeah. We we we saw Burrows last
three year.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
We we saw all these uh former padres from like
the the mid two thousands show up, Corey Loopki, probably
le Blanc. Yeah, they they were all Portland Beavers and
uh yeah, I mean that's the sports connection that you
can make.
Speaker 5 (45:03):
And yeah, it could be the Beaver Cup.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
I could thank you. I just had it stuffed.
Speaker 5 (45:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
No, it's a rivalry. I'm convinced. No, this is the
the the most hated people.
Speaker 3 (45:15):
No, like I want to see now Apple TV in
the parking lot introducing said Beaver Cup with Communo Real Cup,
the Beaver Cup.
Speaker 2 (45:30):
Tell us about your beaver I mean, and then Alex
is there?
Speaker 1 (45:34):
No, this is about the Portland Beavers and Corey Lubk
and Short Chamburroughs.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (45:43):
I think we I think we need to uh, I
need to we need to workshop. We need to workshop.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
What's going on here?
Speaker 2 (45:49):
All right?
Speaker 1 (45:49):
What's going on with Timbers? Well, I will one of
these days go to a Timbers match. I'll promise you
that it's not going to be this time, you know,
I mean, this one's home. But you know what I'm saying,
It won't be this year. But I will go to
a Timbers match because that looks like one of the
most awesome venues in all of Major League Soccer. But
(46:10):
what's happening with the Timbers.
Speaker 5 (46:14):
Apparently a lot man.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
They've had quite the transfer window and they've they've seen
some players go out, some players come in. One player
that is out was a U twenty two player, Santigo Moreno,
he is out.
Speaker 5 (46:34):
He wanted out. He caused a little bit of the mess.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
He didn't want to show up for practice, he didn't
want to show up to play.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
He was done with Portland. So Moreno is out. So
that something that we.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
Probably discussed on this podcast was how can San Diego
get three designated players? Well, this is one way to
you do it. You take a U twenty two player,
you ship him out, and then you bring two more
uh dozen players and that's going to be Christopher Belde
(47:10):
and Felipe.
Speaker 5 (47:13):
Garbio. They are now in there.
Speaker 4 (47:15):
They're new dozen in players only because Mareno is out
and a trade that actually happened last week with Sene
and Senior FC and Portland AH. They Portland acquired an
international slot and Portland used that slot to get Mateys
(47:36):
Rojas and that's They've had a pretty busy uh transfer
window with with that, so they've turned turned to us
ship some guys out and now.
Speaker 5 (47:48):
They have a few new players, which is, you know, good,
good for them.
Speaker 4 (47:54):
They you know, they're really trying to stack up their
chips and really push all in for the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (47:59):
Right now, they're in sixth place in the Western Conference and.
Speaker 4 (48:04):
Like it's gonna be pretty interesting to see, like what
kind of a Portland team we're going to see. I
think we already heard Mikey talk about it, and they
do like to play like the man. They like to
feel out the match and and just kind of see
how it goes. They're very fifty to fifty when it
comes to possession, and they could go either way. Play play,
(48:26):
play some defense, or they can try to be on
the attack and it it. I think there there should
be no surprises here that I think, Uh, it's gonna
be a very big match first of all, and and
second yeah, don't don't take Portland very lightly because you
know they're they're they're trying to come after a playoff
(48:46):
spot too, So there's some really big in the uh,
some you know, playoff clinching opportunities for this first NUFC.
They're gonna have a lot of pressure on their hands
or playing at home. They're also going for the tie
of the expansion wins. Lots happening for this match. What
(49:09):
are your thoughts?
Speaker 3 (49:12):
There are twelve different scenarios where San Diego FC qualifies
for playoffs this weekend.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
Twelve.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
The only ones that really should matter is the first one,
which are SANDIFC win or draw versus Portland Timbers or
and then the list you know what, FC Dallas wins
or loses against LAFC and Austin lose. Like we're getting
into like we'll we'll post it a little bit later.
But that's the one scenario that San DIEFC needs to
(49:44):
worry about. Can you go and take it against a
team that is a legacy team the MLS, that is
well coached, that is able to adapt and has new
players in that are gonna want to prove themselves as
they're exiting other teams, as they're coming into a historic team.
This is a matchup where San Diego FC is facing
(50:05):
one of the strongest challenges because they're also a question
mark to the squad. There's a lot of footage, but
there's not a lot of footage with this iteration of
Portland Timbers, and it's the Portland Timbers that's fighting for
their lives and so you know, Santios can definitely take
the gas off, the foot off the gas for a
little bit and they'll be fine. And if they're not
in first place when they qualify for the playoffs, that's okay,
(50:27):
And I'm pretty sure they'll be fine and they'll live.
If they don't win supportershield. They want it, but I'm
pretty sure that they'll be fine. But this is a
game where if you really want to just put the
cherry on top for a fantastic season, how about you
beat the Portland Timbers at home to qualify in first
pretty much qualify, but cement yourself further in first place
(50:49):
like that, That's a dream scenario for any MLS team,
expansion team A Mikey Badas like, I'll ask them how
do you feel? Is say, I don't look at that stuff.
I'm moving forward to next week. Great, Mike, and that'll
be that. But this is a huge game coming up
here at Snapdragon Stadium. But also this is one of
the teams that have the most fans already established in
(51:10):
them ELSs, especially in San Diego. One of the largest
contingencies of Portland Timbers fans is here in San Diego.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
So interesting, Yeah, no fight, h Tony. What's the status
of Chuquy Lozano.
Speaker 3 (51:23):
Chuksano rolled his ankle against Kansas City and so last
game it was a super precaution to keep him off.
Super precaution to keep him off because they'd rather have
Jugi Osano on the field at his best as opposed
to not at his best. That's tracks, but that's the
reason why he didn't play it last week against San Jose.
(51:44):
Chukulosano is back full capacity at training. He should be
making a return. I'm not too sure if that means
that he's going to start and or finish the game.
But again, it's one of those one of those questions
like would you want Thomas Mueller and in eighth place
or would you want to al right, load managed Chuki
Losano and be in first place.
Speaker 1 (52:06):
And he's healing, okay, So continuing Alex from a discussion
point from the middle of the show, Let's say Chucky
Losano is going to come on to start the second half,
which is something we've seen Sandygoefski do multiple times, bringing
a guy back I like Chuki from absence or injury,
Baird or on Hell or Valakari to take that spot.
Speaker 5 (52:32):
I think last week on.
Speaker 4 (52:34):
Hell Lost is starting privileges for me. It just it
you gotta have some other options there. I'd put Valakari
in just because you don't have any other options. And
I think mikey Varas commented about Baird about he's still learned.
Speaker 5 (52:57):
In the system.
Speaker 4 (52:58):
I think he would be more of a late later entrance,
later late sub in this game.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
Who's not though, who's not learning the system at this point?
Speaker 5 (53:08):
Like everybody.
Speaker 2 (53:09):
Everybody's learning the system like Varts and he's the one.
Speaker 1 (53:11):
He's like, I know it, guys, Yeah, come here, let
me tell you again, which was incredible by the way,
the way he just slotted himself into the team goal
and assists like this is somebody who knows this system
like the back of their hand and knows exactly where
to be.
Speaker 3 (53:27):
And this is again the biggest move in transfer in
the transfer window was the return of Minchao Simbastan, So
that's gonna be very cool and interesting to keep an
eye on.
Speaker 1 (53:39):
All right, any other thoughts on this one. I think
it's going to be an incredible atmosphere and I wouldn't.
What I'd really like to see is can STFC play
the brand of soccer at home that they've played on
the road. I mean, it's been pretty wild, but having
said that, there's also been a little bit of an
(54:01):
element of SDFC getting away with it on the road,
and this last match is another one not too creative.
In the first half, you know, a gaff to go
to zero one and then you get too late goals.
San Jose felt like they were done dirty and it
was a flukeish loss for us. We're like, we just
(54:22):
keep on rolling. The train keeps on rolling. But when
the trains rolling on a pumpy track, sometimes that means
a derailment is going to be coming along the way.
So I am looking for a point on Saturday. A
win would be incredible. I would love it, and it
would be record setting and playoff clinching and all the rest.
(54:44):
But personally, I'm looking for a point on Saturday. I
think Timbers are going to be an incredibly difficult challenge
and I could see it being one where once again
those Coromadoes are playing from behind and trying to find
a way to get back to get that point.
Speaker 5 (55:06):
Go for it.
Speaker 4 (55:06):
It's it's a point or a win to clinch correct correct, Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah,
point point makes sense.
Speaker 5 (55:18):
They they have to.
Speaker 4 (55:19):
Yeah, like you said, Craig, go back to what we're
used to the last two matches against San Jose and
Kansas City, they weren't really looking like the team that
we've seen in weeks past. A lot of a lot
of shots going the other way, and that that's not good.
That's not what you want out of this team, especially
(55:42):
with the young back line. I want to see more possession,
more front foot, more like more shots on goal and
just you know, being able to execute everything in the
game plan.
Speaker 5 (55:56):
So I hope to see it.
Speaker 4 (56:00):
I do want this win or or or draw just
to just to get it over with, just to all right,
we were in the playoffs and that that's it. We
don't have to think of we don't have to kick
the can down the road. We we're just done and
over and we can just think about where where we're
gonna be placing from care on out.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
Just just for the laughs, I'm gonna if it's not
a win and or draw, STFC still makes playoffs, and
I'll read the twelfth scenario if Houston Dean Dynamo loses
to San Jose and the Colorado Rapids win or draw
against Galaxy, and we're all Salt Lake lose against Minnesota.
(56:40):
So if you're looking to sit down and watch some
MLS content, there you go there, right there, right there
there it is. Now, it'll be fun, it'll be hey,
it's Friday night, so we got some there's some giveaways
forth and b in port yourself.
Speaker 2 (56:58):
Uh but Jannon mcmill keep her on the floor. That'll
be fun.
Speaker 1 (57:02):
Oh great, yeah. Oh, here's the last thing I wanted
to talk about, because this might be the last glorious
evening for San Diego FC that fans look out at
the Snapdragon Stadium pitch and say what a beautiful place
to play soccer. Because the next night San Diego WAVEFC
(57:25):
will have to play on the same pitch which just
had an MLS match played on it, and you know what,
they'll do a bang up job of cleaning things up.
But from the weekend after and all the weekends to follow,
a bunch of greased up, three hundred pound weirdos are
going to be throwing helmets into one another and digging
(57:46):
cleats into that pitch and tearing it to hell. And
I can tell you last year San Diego WAVEFC season
devolved into madness at the end of the year when
it was like forty percent sand on the pitch, and
(58:06):
they promised it would be better with MLS, and so
far there have been no issues. And also so far
there's been no football, and there's gonna be football starting
a weekend from this weekend. This is the last one.
This is riven Dell and then it's the road to
Mortar or the rest of the way for this season.
Speaker 5 (58:28):
Alex.
Speaker 1 (58:28):
So, I really do think it's something to keep in mind.
Pitch quality could be an issue the rest of the year.
Speaker 5 (58:37):
Yeah, and guess what they do come back at home
in three weeks.
Speaker 4 (58:45):
This is for Sandy UFC on September thirteenth, So hopefully
they can repair any any type of damage that the
football teams in the US state football team has done
and we can see decent conditions against Minnesota, and then
after that it would be another two weeks before they
(59:08):
play San Jose at home and then they're done until
the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
Well, I mean look right now, last year they went
with one specific type of grass.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Here we go grass talk. They went with one It
was for me to hybrid essentially.
Speaker 3 (59:29):
It was actually fun fact actually it was something a
type of grass that's used in the Pacific Northwest, very
common for a Portland timbers. So it was grass that
came from there. But they didn't factor in that it's
different climates in Mission Valley.
Speaker 2 (59:46):
To the Pacific Northwest, just as Truro.
Speaker 5 (59:51):
This whole.
Speaker 2 (59:54):
By this time.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
Last year, that field was already torn up. It was
already torn up, and they had to replace it with
a whole other field. This this time, they go back
to the original Kentucky Blue, which is the same one
that's use a Petica Park, and it's already lasting. That's
why you have this, this pitch that you have now.
Anything that happens further, they still have an extra two
pitches ready to go. Aesthetically speaking, it's already lost. Craig,
(01:00:17):
that's that's that's those lines are there? Pure anthetics soccer like,
that's that's what it's. It currently looks like Alex Morgan
retired there. Yeah, like that's I know that's gonna be rough.
Like I hope these Europeans realize that the lines didn't
(01:00:39):
like that the field isn't a little bit too like more.
Speaker 2 (01:00:42):
Are all these stupid lines?
Speaker 7 (01:00:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Like do I stop? Here is the field like skinnier?
Like we're give me the pro team in first place?
What does this team win?
Speaker 5 (01:00:51):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:00:52):
Nothing?
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
They play for the love of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
They play for something called the oil old oil can boys.
Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
Oh sir, it's it's because these kids can't they go
get paid to go to school. To so they have
to put their bodies that way because this is for school.
Speaker 1 (01:01:10):
The left tackle gets paid more than I do.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
I mean, if you want to factor it in kind
of education cheap.
Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
So yeah, just I don't know who the cock is,
O brotherl me.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
Chimney m Yeah from Harry Pappins.
Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
I'm telling you the chimney.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
