Speaker 1 (00:33):

Episode number two of the Chromaniacs. My name is Craig Elston,
joined once again by the journalist Tony Sanchez and the

San Diego FC chat. Guys. It is great to be
(00:56):

saying thanks to Low for giving us our theme song
two Am, available on Apple Music or Spotify or wherever

a Safe Space. After you guys recommended this, I went
(01:17):
and found the album for myself and listened to all
twenty four minutes of it. Short album, sorry, had twenty
four minutes. Nevertheless, six stuff, Tony, how are you?
Speaker 2 (01:28):

chro Maniacs. Okay, we had a game last weekend peace
(03:38):
Peace occurred at snap Dragon Stadium. A match was played,
fans came in left, no incidents reported for San Diego
FC and Austin FC. A result reported to nothing. San
Diego FC victorious, continuing a month of May in which
they did not lose at home, which they were dynamite
(04:01):
at home. Five home matches and no losses. Team is
overall six one and three at home banking points. Tony's
starting with you. I was part of your postgame show
on San Diego Punto Football that night. You know, back
back from the snap. You were still up there, up
(04:23):
there on the balcony at the snap. The cleaning crews
were around you, hoping that you would get the bleep
out of the snap a little bit sooner if possible.
But you're kind of broad thoughts on the result on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, it's it's more of the same, and usually that's
a negative connotation, but here it's like, look, it's what
we've been promised from MIKEY Vadis and company as far
as that play style, and I'm glad I think I
mentioned it here for the first time last week on
the first episode of The Carmaniacs, where I don't think
it's a right to dream playstyle anymore. San Diego FC's
play style that's really coming through and Mike E. Vadis's
(04:59):
implementation of that, and we even mentioned it that it's
like they're just kind of on ultra instinct. And this
is a very Dragon Ball anime kind of reference, where
there's a there's a form where Goku, the main character,
just moves without thinking, and it's just the next evolution
of what it's like to move into the next phase
(05:21):
of enlightenment perhaps, but here in enlightenment in terms of
this play style, and I think they're gonna hit on
the gear really quickly here where there's buy in, and
there has been buying throughout, but they're really really on
the right path. And look, those points don't lie. I
like to Michibotis about the points, by the way, in
terms of hey, you score, you have this many points?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
I was did.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
I double checked with the SDFC comp's crew, and I said, hey,
twenty five points out of thirty, right, And they looked
at me, looked at the computer, did some math and
said yes, that is correct.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Great. Went over, asked BacT you about us this. He
laughed at me. He's like, oh, you know you're good
at math.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Huh.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
But anyways, they still got good points positivity.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Twenty one out of thirty, twenty one out of thirty
correct at home, six wins, three draws. You know, Tony,
because I watched that whole press conference and then I
was preparing notes for this show this morning, and I
was trying to find those twenty five points. I was like, sorry,
(06:22):
where wait hang on, am I wait? Nope, this was wrong.
The massive math yep Alex. I saw the ride up
at Chromatic FC on the broadside San Diego, controlling this
(06:43):
match pretty much.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, just complete possession, you know all throughout the game.
You know, they had their chances early on in the
in the first half, and you know, they just took
control and you know, they couldn't finish, you know, early on,
and then they kind of were a little bit more
patient and really guided those passes through and and finally
(07:08):
you know, found found the back of the net.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
So that was really good.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Austin FC very passive throughout the game, except for when
they started the second half and they they kind of
they caught me a little bit, uh surprised that, you know,
they they kind of changed changed up a little bit.
They wanted to be uh aggressive, especially in the final third,
(07:32):
and you know, they they had their shots on goal,
but ultimately they you know, they they took their best
plate maker out, Brandon Vasquez, which was very confusing that
you know, you're kind of telling your team and you know,
telling your fans right right then and there that you know,
you're not really trying to win, and you know that
that that's got to be hard for to be an
(07:54):
Austin FC fan to see that.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah, that was one of the things that stunned me
was seeing the XG after the game, and based on
the XG, it's like, was Austin even there? I think
it was a point two five. I mean, that's that's
ludicrous in terms of if you are an Austin FC
fan going, why did we make the flight out of
(08:18):
San Diego. I hope they got a chance to go
see the zoo, you know, or you know, at the
very least, go down to Barrio Logan get some good tacos.
Like I hope they made something out of the trip
because their their trip to snap Dragon Stadium, they probably
got weirded out by a security circle going what's going
on up here? Is something wrong? Did we do something wrong?
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (08:39):
And then they left with exactly as many goals as
they flew in with. It was This is an STFC podcast,
so I'm not too long on Austin. I was just
done by how little there was. I mean, once it
was one nothing, it felt like it was one hundred
to nothing.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, you know, listen, it kind of
seemed like they wanted to set back and then counter
when they had their chance.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
They just didn't get those opportunities.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
CINDIFC really kept control of the pace and control of
the game the whole way. So yeah, maybe maybe it
was like giving an early look and seeing what they
can do. But then once it got laid in the game,
once it got to that one zero score, like you said, yeah,
there it was over.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
They they kind of just kind of gave up a
little bit towards.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
I thought of you, Alex.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
I thought of you because I guess who started up front, Oh, Patty,
And last time, You're like, if I see Ony on
this starting line up in that position, I'm going to
lose it.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
And guess what boom he appeared?
Speaker 2 (09:46):
And I think I figured about the kind of the why, right,
Like this plus out demanded somebody up top to be physical, right,
you say, why not me Lanski?
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Why not Tomas Ankle.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
They need that big body to hold up a tire
out the defense and just wear them down and grind
them down. And that's why they're so successful towards the end,
the last ten minutes of each half, or just coming
out of a half and just being lightning quick because
they were winding and creating that space between the defense
and the and the midfield to where you can sneak
in some quick some quick playing there.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
But yeah, I thought of you.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
I'm like, Oh, Alex is gonna love that's just seeing
him right down the middle do probably absolutely nothing in
terms of uh shot scoring, uh ball control, but uh yeah,
that was I was like, Oh, Alex, it's starting.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
He's not your prototypical you know nine that that you
want to see out there, you know, he's not gonna
take a lot of shots on goal, but I think, yeah,
last game, he kind of he kind of did his job.
He kind of did did what he needed to do
there and you know, get some passes off. What what
I did like was seeing look at the Elatre kind
(10:54):
of be be that man kind of more up up front,
up up by the penalty box this time around, and
he Yeah, Luca really did take his chances and it
was it was really cool to see him uh get
that goal, uh goal off in the in the second half,
and uh with with the Chuky assists, it was really
(11:15):
beautiful and especially when he saw uh Annie kind of
go for the near port post.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
I kind of liked Thatchuky had.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
His options like, well, if I pass it quick, I
could give it off to Oni, but he he was
a little bit more patient and and settle with uh
uh Delatoria coming in uh towards the penalty area.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
So that that was really good.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Good great patients by Tucky Losano and uh and really
great finished by look at Delatori.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
And you know, one thing that stands out watching MLS
Tony is there's a lot of boomball that's played. You know,
in terms of long balls forward and to have the
ability to effectively trap that ball on the run, control
it with an effective first touch, and convert those balls
(12:06):
into scoring opportunities. To me, seems like something really important
for an MLS side, and that play was illustrative of
that perfectly. Lozano's trap and his ability to maintain pace
while he is capturing the ball. That's everything, because you know,
(12:26):
just imagine how hard it is it put yourself in
that situation. The ball's coming down, you're running for it.
You want to turn around, you want to protect it,
you want to chest it down, you want to get control.
By the time you do that, the defense is all
over you, that the play is over, it's done. You know,
he has that ability to stay progressive, to stay positive
in his action as he is collecting the ball, and
(12:49):
that gives him the time that Alex just talked about
Tony in terms of that time to not okay only nope,
better options come and it's Luca right down the middle
and I can hit him with a simple pass.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
And that's what he's been excelling that for since we've
seen Tulsa be healthy.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
And you know, we'll we'll get to that it.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Was in this very tribe in his style of play,
right because he's hard working.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
He already proved that it's gonna be a minute.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
He already proved it's going to be that person you
know you can trust on to go up against l
a Galaxy and punch him in the face and track
down a ball and just do those hard plays. Now
it's creative side, the fun side of So it's a
shame to see him go down in that game, but
just to give that play style, just everybody's kind of
(13:36):
adapting and can somebody like Alex Mighten do that later
in case nows injuring what that timeline is going to
look like, but you know it's a it's a really
beautiful goal. Props to Patty McNair that rapa Marcus esque
uh long ball. That's such a great vision, just knowing
like I'm going to give this a boot and somebody
better be there, and Sano was there, Like that's that's
(13:59):
kind of that playing without thinking sort of situation where
you just somebody should get this. I know the play
the book says I need a hit, you know right now,
So I'm gonna hit.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Let's go ahead and go there should be somebody there.
I did my job. Everybody's taking care of themselves. That's
a team goal.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Well, you know, Alex, well, yeah, sorry, go ahead and
talk about Patty.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
And then yeah, yeah, real quick, I'm sorry, And yeah,
Patty mccartt McNairy actually did that twice.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
He went back to back to that same shot.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
And yeah, the second one was was absolutely on the spot.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
Great pass to your TRICKU Losana.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
So speaking of Chokey, let's just go ahead and hopscotch
to that right now, because the goal happens in about
four or five minutes later. Chokey's on his seat, he's walking,
he's coming off. You know, there was a little hope,
and that's all it was. It was hope on match
night that maybe it's you know, maybe it's an excess
of caution. Maybe he felt something at the you know,
(14:57):
very first second and went down to prevent any el's happening. Nope.
Now the report is out that Chucky Lozano, who has
just been selected for the Mexican national team, after months
and years of not being selected for L three, finally
getting the call back to wear the team colors and
(15:18):
instead now he is out for the Conky Caff Gold
Cup over the course of the next month and Alex,
as he wrote in Our rundown, it just for Chuokey,
never mind for Mexico fans. For Chukey this is just
such a gutting development to get hurt literally the minute before,
so to speak, you're about to go play once again
(15:39):
for your home country.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yeah, it's as a an, I myself a Mexico national
team fan, I really wanted this for Trucky.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
He's been working so hard.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
He really thought that this was going to be his
opportunity to come back and you know, work, put in
the work, you know, get those goals in, get those
assists in with with c INDIOC and potentially come back
to the Mexican national team. And it is, uh, it's
tough to see that he's going to miss out on
(16:12):
the on the Gold Cup. It's terrible news. And it's
another hamstring and injury, it seems like. And he it
seems like he's gonna miss probably the same amount as
you did last time.
Speaker 5 (16:25):
And I know, I know Tony.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
You you've heard this in whenever he's up there on
the in the in the press conferences that he.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
He wants this so bad.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
He wants to be there with the team, and yeah,
he's been saying saying it all along to all the media,
like this is what he wants to do.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Yeah, but are we surprised, Like again like Mexican national team,
uh uh fan Alex like Closana man, Like that's always
been the story, right.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Like he's our guy. He's representing Mexico and Napoli represented
in Mexico and ESV.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
I know that he's out there doing it, he gets
he's short sprints and bursts where he just kind of
ends up on that injury list and just the hamstring
is a nagging one. I do believe it's gonna be
a similar timeframe for this injury.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
But if I do some ning, is this a good
thing Maybe for SDFC.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
Now, but just in the future where you don't have
te Pizza out on international duty, out in international play.
Of course, you want the best for the player, have
a chance with the World Cup here at home. But
if you're a San Diego FC fan, it sucks right now.
But when he does come back, like you're gonna have
a Tukulosana where otherwise you may not have orgula more
(17:42):
used up in a sense with a couple of international
games here for leading up an in Gold.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Cup, you know, talking to both of you guys, and
also to our mutual friend in mar Villa, who I
saw at a Wave match previously and we were talking
about Chuky and he echoed, you know, just how important
it was to Chooky because the thing that really stood
out to me was coming off a hamstring injury, how
much he was flying up and down the field, like
(18:09):
not just getting up and down the field, but clearly
exhibiting his top speed, you know, and going like, here's
the here's the top of my range, here's the here's
the most I can do, the best I can do,
and really pushing himself in a spot where I think
a lot of highly compensated professional superstar athletes would maybe
(18:29):
not you know, put it all the way into the
red all the time. And and you know when I
was talking to and Mort about that, he just kind
of looked at me with you like, well, yeah, he
he knows what he has to do to make the team.
He knows that he has to go above and beyond
because he's an MLS player, and because he's an MLS player,
he's thought of as not being on the level, and
(18:51):
so he has to show his level and so that's
why he's playing as hard as he can.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
So you know, it's a.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Real shame and if if it does wind up being
a cat's paw in atfc's favor, that he winds up
having a little bit more in the tank in the
second half for Club because he didn't have the opportunity
to feature for Country, and to give it one hundred
and eighty thousand percent out there going like, if you
thought this was my top speed, wait till I put
(19:17):
on the green, the red, and the white. I'm going
to go even faster and even harder for you. So
the best to Chooky, you know, going forward and hopefully
this all works out for him, all right, continuing through
our discussion topics here, this is what we do on Chromaniacs.
We're going to start with kind of the hot topics
of the week in SDFC. We'll go through the voice
(19:38):
of the supporter and talk about what's going on because
there's certainly a lot of follow up that to what
was going on in North End, and we'll wrap by
talking about SDFC and Club America still to come. Before
the show is over. I wanted to go back to
that line that you mentioned, Tony, because not only did
Mikey about us say it to the press in one
(19:59):
of the clips that SANDYFC has put out on Instagram
and other social media, you saw when he said it
to the team, and the funny thing was he said
it with conviction to the press. To the team, he
couched it. He was like, I think that maybe the
play is turning to get into your blood, you know,
to the press, He's like, they are playing without thinking.
(20:21):
The football is now in their heart, it's in their blood.
You know it's going into deeper levels you know of
their body. And do you agree, I'll start with you, Tony,
do you agree are they playing without thinking? Or is
this mighty manifesting what he needs at the end of
(20:43):
the year.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
I think there's some truth to that, definitely, because first
of all, I think everybody starting to head a schedule
of when the chemistry would be built, and that's the
most important thing with this style of plays, being able
to build that chemistry and being able to trust that
your teammate will be exactly where they're supposed to be
and if they're not, they're working hard in order to
get to that position, and I have to agree, especially
(21:07):
in this game where Yepes first Gov is not in
the lineup.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Yepe, the captain, the.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
The metronome, the drummer, the whatever you the tone setter
of this particular play style is missing in the midfield
and you throw Ado, you throw Godoy in there, you
throw the latore, and you're still expected to addhere to this,
to this style of play, this philosophy that you've been
instilling with the help of Ian Varistan still on the lineup,
who then comes back and Yepes Firstov and it seems seamless.
(21:37):
I'm not gonna say, I'm not gonna sit here and
say like, well, you know, as if she didn't meet
necessarily missing Varsen or excuse me, first Gov. They did
one thousand percent. This team is better with Yepe your captain.
But Alabadado didn't do bad, and we've seen the development
of him. This is the first game that SANDYFC wins
with starting in the lineup this year.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
Yeah, he looked really good.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
I like that this team is a mix of veterans
and the young players like Alvarado, like Verhoven, Bombino. It
just seems to work well. Everything is just connecting. It's
flowing the way it should be. You know, they've played
a lot of hard games already in the schedule they
(22:26):
and guess what, there's there's gonna be more. And it's
good to see that they have a little bit of
depth in there, because there's gonna be be games now
that you know, the players that went out for international
duty are not going to be there. So I think
that's gonna be coming up pretty soon. And yeah, we're
(22:46):
gonna see h We're gonna see him. How much depth
this team has, uh, you know going into those games.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Something that you talked about a little bit earlier Tony
is kind of sticking in my mind, which is talking
about the need for physicality at the nine, almost in
the sense of how in a basketball offense, a center
might take the post to free the wing, you know,
(23:15):
to draw defense to allow the wing. You've got your
two dp's on the wing, Lozano, one healthy dryer on
the other side. Usually so. In the eightieth minute against Austin,
Marcus e Vartsen returns to the lineup, he's back from injury.
He does get a header on net. I think that's
(23:35):
what you're pulling up right, here, you know, gets one
pretty decent chance keeper right there. You know, clinical, right place,
right time, makes the safe. But that's a player with
the size, with the physicality. How excited are you to
see maybe in Vartsen, who didn't necessarily feature brilliantly in
(23:58):
the first few matches before he got her, maybe take
that next step that Valakari cannot to add touch and
scoring to the physicality.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
I think it's unfortunate that you can't have Tweet next
to him. And that's where I'm waiting to see the
San Diego f see in this playing without thinking style
with a full squad and a full healthy squad, because
yep has been doing most of the teaching, most of
the philosified, most of the tone setting, but if you
have somebody up top, and I think that's where San
Diego's definitely been missing, that aspect where they'll create all
(24:32):
the chances, but then when it gets to the final third,
they kind of don't know what to do. There's too
many options, or sometimes they just kind of freak out.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
They're not clinical.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
You having Varsiten and his sketchers, by the way, only
player I know the worst sketchers catch your cleats.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
And so.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
He's able to not only score but also create himself.
When he saw ivarisen in the beginning, there are some
calls for like, hey, when is he gonna score?
Speaker 4 (24:58):
When is this guy? Is he a striker? What's happening here?
Speaker 2 (25:01):
But now, if he's trying to take the style of
play into consideration, he was doing exactly what he needed
to be.
Speaker 4 (25:08):
He needed to be that disruptor.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
He needed to be the person that carried the mark
and took care of a couple of defenders just to
open some space up for Dre dryer Land or Chooki.
So I'm very excited to see what this team is
gonna be able to look like with that nine in
the in there. And not only that, I want to
see what I got in the midfield, so that freezes
him up for that.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
So it's a it's a bonus there too.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Yeah, me too, because I don't want to see bella
card in the nine. And then for yeah, for in Barts,
and I love how the team like they knew he
was on the pitch. They they knew he was there,
and they were trying their hardest to have him score
that goal. Uh in his first you know, returning match
(25:53):
from injury.
Speaker 5 (25:54):
I love that.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
It kind of seems that this team has a really
great connection and you know, they want they want to
they want him to have that moment when in this
first match for coming back from injury. So yeah, I'm
excited to see more invarts in and yeah, he's gonna
be the kind of player that we we kind of
(26:18):
are been waiting to see in that nine position. So
it's you know, it's it's about time that we we
finally get to see that. And yeah, we we we
do need to see this. This whole thing kind of
developed right with the full squad with Chookey there, Chookey
in Barts and Dryer.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
I'm waiting. I can't wait to see it back again.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Well, we won't see it presumably for a little while
there's an international break that we knew we weren't going
to see it, and then it'll be a matter of
when for Chokey his health. And I can only imagine
after injuring a hamstring a second time in half a season,
that there's going to be an added layer of caution
in terms of making sure you're coming back one hundred
(27:04):
percent and sometimes that last ten percent for a hamstring
can just take way longer than you think it will,
because it's like, no, I feel good, I feel good,
but it's still there. It's still slightly there. And if
it's still slightly there, you cannot play without thinking because
you're always thinking, Am I about to rip my hamstring?
Speaker 4 (27:25):
Now?
Speaker 1 (27:25):
One of the ways that you can sub out with
Lozano out of the lineup is to bring in Milanoloski.
But it's interesting in that Aloski has really taken to
this late game super sub, scoring substitution, somebody who comes
(27:46):
in with fresh legs when the defense is worn down
and finds his way to a goal. He does it
again in stoppage time against against Austin. But I'm curious.
He's five to eleven. You know that's what he's listed at,
So not sure if you put him in the bare
(28:08):
feet and brought out the tape measure exactly what you'd get.
Is Eloski better serve? This is my question for the
discussion topic, Alex. We can start with you, is is
SDFC better served putting someone else out there and keeping
a Lowski super sub or should Lozano's injury transfer minutes
(28:31):
to Milan?
Speaker 3 (28:33):
I think number one I think the credit for putting
in Aloski late in the game, you know, should go
to Mikey Varies. He's really been picking his spots to
bring in players obviously late, very late in the match
to put in Alaski. He's not really expected to do anything,
(28:54):
but a nice added goal, you know, to make it
to nothing is pretty nice. But we we've seen him
do this before with you know, uh Tomas a well,
when he brings him in, he makes an impact in
the game and he and now Alaski's been doing that too,
so uh, credit to Barras for picking his spots and
(29:16):
bringing these players in.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
I don't I.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Don't see any drawbacks in putting Laski out there, especially
now that we know that there's an injury with Truchy.
He he's going to miss some time, we just don't
know how long. And yeah, I want to I've been
saying it for a very long time, like I want
to see more Alasky and hopefully we do get that opportunity,
(29:45):
you know, and next in these next few matches that
are that are coming up. And yeah, he's a got
We got to remember what what his resume is. He
he is a USL goal scoring like champion. He he
knows what he he knows what he can do. He
knows how to find the back of the net. So
(30:05):
you know, I don't see any drawbacks. I really do
hope we do see it. I think right now with injury,
it's the best opportunity to do it. What about you, Tony, Yeah,
I mean I kind of like him as the super sub,
like I really do, just because I mean, right now.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
He's leading the MLS with most goals per minutes played.
He's number one on there for a reason, and so
if that's the position where he kind of elevates to
in his excelling right now, I'd want to go ahead.
I understand why Mikey Bodas just keeps leaving him there.
And it's like that little bottle of energy and just
like that ace up your sleeve that you just know
(30:44):
you have. And we've seen him utilize him differently too,
because Milan's playing in the midfield as well, not just
at up top in the nine, so you can do
a little bit a couple of different modifications toward that.
And on top of that, if you do get a Lowski,
can you do you play him in that midfield? Do
you play him at the nine because Invason can also
play on the left and so you can throw him
on the left hand side, make it more of a
(31:06):
midfield left winger type of situation, not so much as
a central attack. But you also have that option. So
it's very it's a there's a lot of options. But
as we're going to get to in a bit with
international breaks, I'm not sure how many options are realistically
available in combination for Mikey about us.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
How does Alex mighten Fix fit into this mix? In
your guy's opinion, might.
Speaker 5 (31:34):
He He's good at it as a winger.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
I want him to make more challenges and you know,
take take on.
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Some more guys. I think he does have the speed.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
I think I really do believe in his ability. It's
just having that competence to just go for that post,
bring that pass inside. I've seen him a little bit
when he's like just unsure, he tries to cut back
inside a little too soon, and I he I like
him where if they're going to bring him on and
(32:06):
he's good as a winger, especially right now with Lozano
out and uh but with yeah, maightin is I whenever
they put him in that ninth spot. It just doesn't
feel right for some reason, especially since whenever they do
(32:26):
Maighten and and Dryer just switch out anyway, they just.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
Kind of like flip up all the time.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
So you're kinda you're gonna see different looks with with
Maighten out there.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
Yeah, No, alex plain is just is a different go
for it. Craig No.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
I mean, I think you guys nailed it. Good discussion,
you know, in terms of who should step in as
Chucky steps out, and obviously in Vartsen is going to
take more minutes as he gets healthier, and I would
expect him probably you know, not to jump the gun
on the Glube of America review, but I would expect
him to play more, you know, even potentially start and
play the first half against Club America and the goal
(33:10):
would be one SAYSDFC is back to MLS action that
in varts In his back to being able to play
sixty seventy five and full ninety because I know this
is someone that they are counting on and we have
only rarely heard from him so far this year. One
thing that stood out to me looking at the standings
(33:32):
and trying to figure out Tony's muddled math for six
one and three at home, which is wonderful twenty one
out of thirty possible points banked, but also ten home
matches so far for SDFC. We obviously just saw five
in the month of May and only seven on the
(33:55):
road so far. Obviously that flip flops in the second half.
You have seen some of the top sides yet, such
as Vancouver, who you'll see home and away in the
second half. So I guess my question to you guys,
as Tony starting with you, how important has it been
(34:15):
for both the club to have banked these points and
for fans to keep that in mind If there's a
little bit of wavering in the second half that you
played a plus three front loaded home schedule in the
first half of your first every season.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
I think we just have to remind everybody what the
expectations were coming into as an expansion team into the season,
right if you were challenging for playoffs, it was water
in the desert. Thank goodness, this year went so well.
Mikey Vadis himself was like, yep, if we can compete
for that. I remember I'm having a conversation with you
(34:52):
on air about that specifically, too about like if we
can do that, I think it's a mission accomplished and
in kind of passing an off.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
All colors there.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
But now you're in second place, you're competing, there's there
are you know, there are leveling and adjustments being made
to power rankings that like this is just a couple
of months removed from you telling everybody they were going
to be fifteenth dead last in the West. That's almost
virtually impossible the way in the pace that this is
(35:22):
going right, So just a matter of tempering expectations. You
do have that Vancouver, that Minnesota coming up after a
Gluba Medica, and it's gonna be fun, fun and games,
but there's some really tough matchups, even going away to
some of the some of the matches over in Chicago.
That intercontinental travel, the continental travel, excuse me, is still
(35:44):
something that the players themselves are getting adjusted to. People
We've been asked, why do you keep asking about altitude
of these players, because they keep bringing it up. They
just do like it's a discussion point. Like as much
as you want to say no, it's a discussion point.
So it's really good for them to have bank that
and much like the weakest link like good like you
(36:04):
got the money in the beginning. That's the great, great strategy,
great game show.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
By the way, Yeah, you just brought up a good
question because yeah, this is the first time they've kind
of traveled the you know, this country is pretty big,
it's pretty wide. Yeah, when it comes to these players
minutes and how they're going to be managed down the road,
(36:30):
what do you think is it going to be the
best strategy? You know when it I think obviously when
it comes to the League, Scott, we're probably going to
see more of the you know, the maintains and probably
on head play those those matches for you know, and
Dryer might get less minutes there.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
But I've been thinking about it.
Speaker 3 (36:53):
That these players are going to have career high in
minutes potentially, So with the with the out of travel
and with with the schedule of the way it is,
plus League's Cup, plus if there is potentially playoffs, you know,
how how are these minutes going to be managed?
Speaker 1 (37:15):
You know? And Tom Krassbak and the UT wrote a
good piece call him about this as well and suggested
that mikey Vardas channels and Greg Popovich and have some
straight sitouts in some road contests and just be like, hey, Chuki,
you're not even on the plane, bro, Like you know,
we're going to just leave you at home. Kawhi Leonard
(37:35):
Tim Duncan style, you know, just be like, nope, Tim's
not there. Tim didn't make the flight. I think it's
going to be a legitimate concern. And seeing Chukey hurt
himself twice in the first half of the year trying
to make the national team. We haven't seen that from
Dryer yet. But he's not exactly Christiano Ronaldo in terms
(37:59):
of his physique, you know what I'm saying. He's a
smaller player that theoretically could break down over the course
of the year. One thing that has surprised me very slightly,
and I think Mikey Artist gets pretty much a's across
the board. And maybe this is really more than anything
(38:20):
endemic of the need to get the soccer into the
bloodstream and out of the brain and into the organs
and all of that soccer transfer fluid transfer. However, it
works that he's needed to play his starters more minutes
(38:40):
earlier to develop that chemistry to microwave that or incubate.
I guess I got to stay with the medical metaphors
to incubate that chemistry and keep it rolling. Whereas maybe
in a different universe where everyone knows each other and
everyone's played together more, he would have had more rotated
lineups for these three and eights, because this is twice
(39:03):
now Tony that we've seen three matches in eight and
very little rotation from San Diego FC. A half here,
a half there, a guy here, a guy there.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Do I have to add to this because there is
one more thing we're not mentioning. We were fans at
some point of the USL just the concept of soccer
and Sandio Cassandio Loyle was here, and we met some
interesting teams such as Tacoma Defiance Los Dos. These are
all teams that are B squads for the MLS teams
now MLS next.
Speaker 4 (39:34):
San Diego FC does not have that right now. They
have all these.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Networks, they have, you know, summer transfers coming in through
FC Northland. They can have loans, but they don't have
a well of youth. The youth is already the starters.
They're already there. So unless something happens and you have
just just the backing of a Brinks truck of players
and by the dozen.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
That's also going to be a big issue.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Great point, Alex, what do you what do you think
about that?
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Man?
Speaker 3 (40:08):
Yeah, I wish we had some sort of established, you know,
second team already, but we don't have that. So yeah,
I'm just looking up like dryers minutes and he's already
he's completed a lot already so far compared to his
(40:29):
time with in Belgium, which was over thirteen hundred minutes,
right close to sixteen hundred combined with the pre yeah,
two seasons, so he's he's already meeting he's close to
what he has, which is like about fifteen hundred, and
we're gonna need him. We're really gonna need him down
the stretch. And just because he's up there with I
(40:55):
was just looking this up.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
He's up there with Messi.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
When when it comes to goals assists, he has thirteen.
Speaker 5 (41:03):
I believe Messi has fifteen. And so yeah, we're gonna
really have that. We're gonna need.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
That depth that we have and to play out some
of these matches in between the seasons. So whatever Tyler
Heaps and Mikey Virus can cut, it's gonna be you know,
it's got to be a good plan, you know, because
we I think everybody wants the playoffs. I think I
think we're hungry for it. I think we see that
(41:33):
we're right now, we're in second place, and I.
Speaker 5 (41:35):
Think we can get there. I really do.
Speaker 3 (41:37):
So they really have to be smart about what's going
to happen during the season.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
Our last discussion topic before we switch things up, it's
nickname submission of the week. So ongoing sub goal of
the Cromaniacs podcast is to get a nickname for San
Diego FC. It is so bleeping unwieldy to be speaking
(42:04):
about them conversationally and get to the point where you
want to say the things, and instead you say the
football club, the SDFC, the soccer team players. It's obnoxious.
It's obnoxious. So last week we entertained what I still
(42:27):
think is a rather fanciful idea something you know, chrome dragons,
chrome devils, some chrome thing, you know, chrome talisman, whatever
it is. This week we're going to turn to Matthew
Doyle from mlssoccer dot com, who's putting together listicles and
(42:48):
power rankings and such, and he has gone with Los Ninos.
What are your thoughts? Nicknamed submission mL soccer dot com.
Right there, you see Los Ninos are among that trio
of teams playing that steer, beautiful effective soccer. What do
you guys think Los Ninos? Is this a workable nickname
(43:12):
for San Diego Football Club?
Speaker 4 (43:15):
Go for an Alex.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
I'm gonna give it like a kind of like in between,
not a thumbs up, not a thumbs down on a
thumb sideways. Uh. It's it's a good, good submission by
Matthew Doyle. I follow him and you know he writes
his power rankings and he.
Speaker 5 (43:34):
Has really good write up so far about sandi USC.
I think he really likes what this club is doing.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
But yeah, he's really trying to make Las Enos a
name and a moniker for versus and UFC uh. And
it's okay, I mean Los Ninos. We we do have
tatis uh Nino.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
It's a young team. We do right to dream. Yeah, right,
there's gonna be more Nino's along the way. You know,
we've got Nino's bunking and singing hills right now, trying
to you know, earn that right to dream, Tony. We've
got a thumbs sideways from Alex. We've got the Emperor
before the decision right now from Alex, what about from you?
Speaker 2 (44:19):
There has to be see, it's just it's just not perfect.
I don't know if that makes it. It's just not
perfect right, Like there's boxes of ticks. I'm like those
ninos again, tatis this. We do have weather called al
Nino sometimes just around these parts. So but like again
I'm there with like it has to be like with
the color, the feel like Los NEOs again, you're just
(44:41):
kind of pawning it off to write to dream again,
Like okay, let's I like to write to dream thing.
But now everything is a little bit more San Diego FC.
So what's specifically San Diego FC?
Speaker 4 (44:53):
Like what is that? I think it's a good submission.
It's not.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
It's harmless, but I think we're on the cusp of
some thing. Like I think they can find it, we
can go with it, we can try it out. Maybe
it's it's a it's like a like a chicle, like
just you got something, find it and to find.
Speaker 4 (45:08):
The the gum. I don't know why I had to
think of a gum, but chicle. It's just kind of mallet.
It's malleable enough to be like, okay, now I can
blow the bubble. But the bubble the gum is not
a bubble moment in time.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
What do you think? I think it's just okay. I
get like if you told me that was it, then
I'd be like, okay, But does that make understryer anino?
Speaker 4 (45:37):
Yo?
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Just does that make diverska or in varts in a nino?
They're not that young, you know, like is choky anino?
He's not. He's checking his trainer, Like, hang on, why
are you with me all day? If I'm a Nino,
you know I should be I should be spry and young.
So I don't know.
Speaker 4 (45:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
And I saw people trying to push los azulis on
a couple of plants forms and I'm sorry. You know,
cruz azul is a thing that exists. Blue is a
color that is shared all over the place, So you know,
los azulas the blues are we chelsea, you know, like
(46:16):
s yeah, yeah. So not feeling that still think if
we're gonna pick one of the two, it's got to
be the chrome, because who else is chrome? No one
else is chrome. It's kind of like thinking about the
padres brown and gold. You know, they the Prodreys were
blue and white for a while, and it's like who
are we? Are we Walmart? Are we?
Speaker 5 (46:35):
The Brewers?
Speaker 1 (46:36):
Are we? What are we? So? Yeah, los Nino's, I
don't know, little too generic, little too generic.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Yeah, it's like a yeah, no, it's like a if
you're playing a video game, you create a franchise, and
it's like, well, this is the default thing that the
announcer says that was there in that in that sound booth,
just recorded the bats, this the fire crackers, nosos.
Speaker 1 (47:04):
Amazing. Let's quickly shift to the report. I can definitely
give the most of the three of us, which is
what happened in the North End on Saturday night with
Austin in town and with a much different and definitely yeah,
(47:25):
especially early on, smaller crowd in the North End. Well,
there was a reason for that, and we speculated this
would be the case, but it wasn't made official when
we talked on Chromaniacs Number one, which is that the
three largest by population supporters groups for San Diego FC
(47:46):
all decided to boycott have a home watch party away
at a bar.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
Boycott.
Speaker 1 (47:59):
The three largest supporter groups decided to boycott the San
Diego FC Austin FC match in solidarity for however, many
out of their groups of that thirty three got suspended
because the club hasn't thrown out a hit list. The
(48:19):
club hasn't thrown out there are eight Bara and six
Dago Boys and this that and this many Galaxy or
they haven't even said how many San Diego and how
many Galaxy people got suspended. So there's there's a lot
of privacy and kind of giving people the respect of
their privacy, which I totally understand in terms of that
(48:39):
suspension list. But the reaction was to have Dago Boys
and Barra and Chavos all skip the Saturday match, which
left the supporting to the other four supporters groups. It
was certainly a smaller tailgate in the purple lot. Of course,
(49:03):
of course, it was certainly a different sound at some points. Hey,
if your entire frontline drum corps is gone, yo, and
the backup drummers are in, you know, if Varsity is
out and junior Varsity is in, you know, I mean,
you know, there's gonna be some mistakes made at the
(49:24):
line of scrimmage, so to speak. So you know, the
drumming improved as the night went on. But as someone
who is right in the middle of it. I couldn't
be more proud of the people who decided to show up,
because supporting a club is about showing up. And trust
me when I tell you that everybody in Dago, Boys,
(49:45):
Bara and Chavos knows that, and that's why they always
show up. And that's why part of their credo is
that they're always there, and that's why the songs are
wherever you go, we will be there, songs that, by
the way, were made unavailable to those who were in
the supporter group trying to do their best because the
(50:07):
Instagram spot SDFC Chance was deactivated for the weekend. Now
it's back.
Speaker 4 (50:15):
Hm hmm.
Speaker 1 (50:17):
Interesting, I'm telling you what happened. I will further tell
you that being at the Purple Lot and in the tailgate,
I know that from many of the people leaders, you know,
Capito's people who were there who knew that that the
match night experience was kind of on them. That night,
(50:39):
there were folks that had hard feelings, that felt abandoned,
you know, that that felt like something something's not right.
Speaker 6 (50:49):
You know.
Speaker 1 (50:49):
But those people all did their damn level best, and
I really appreciated San Diego FC highlighting that the next
day and highlighting that over the course of the next
couple of days on social media, y'all in big shout
out to the riptides and to the locals into the
eighteenth Battalion. UH and to IG eight us SG.
Speaker 5 (51:12):
I always want to.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
Kick your name US G one eight. Dang it. I
always getting mixed up acronyms. I get mixed up. But nonetheless,
I was just really really excited for those people. And
the last thing I want to say, and then I'd
love to get your reaction Tony and Alex. But even
(51:34):
since then, and you know, I'll probably say this for
the eightieth time, but Mark Siegler can generally fuck off.
I mean, the writing and the ut about this was
literally Facebook group sourced. It was literally Facebook group sourced.
No reporting being done, no one being called, no actual
(51:56):
questions being asked. It was lifting stuff out of MLS
fans and Facebook groups and writing it in the Union Tribune.
And so it's like, yeah, I saw that quote because
I saw it the other day on Facebook. You know.
It's like, when I read it in the paper, I
was like, really, I saw that on Facebook. It's not
the job of the soccer writer to judge how the
(52:18):
supporter group did on the night and say well, it
was this, or it was that, or it was something else.
That's just shit stirring, and that's unnecessary and it's divisive.
And some of the commentary since then has been divisive
on both sides, whether it's plugging STFC chance back in,
like where was it, Whether it's saying, hey, no, we
(52:38):
loved the match day atmosphere even better this day. Nah,
you didn't come on. It's better with everybody there. And again,
I'm not a leader. I get to be vocal because
we've got this show, So I'm a leader in that
sense I'm speaking, but I'd like to offer a word
of unity and a vote of unity. All of us
(53:02):
have the same goal, which is to show up and
have fun, to go to the tailgate, to be with
your friends, to have the music, to have the barbecue,
to have the drinks, and to have the songs and
everybody to get all lathered up and ready, and then
to go inside and to kick butt as a supporter group,
(53:23):
which means singing, drumming, chanting, dancing, moving in time, waving
the flags, doing all that stuff. And we all do
it best when we all do it together. It's pointless, petty,
and quite frankly juvenile to even compare. And I know
that sounds maybe pollyannish on my side, but I think
(53:46):
it's juvenile to even compare. Oh, well, my group's bigger
than yours. Well, my dick's bigger than yours. Well, my
flag stick is larger than yours. Like, what aren't we
all trying to create the atmosphere for sandc aren't there
friends through all of these groups. Let's just continue to
do that. Nobody should fight. I am upset that because
(54:08):
of what happened against Galaxy, the club has now forced
supporters to leave from the north as well as enter
from the north. As a trolley goer, you are pushing
me further away from my trolley and I may actually
leave a few minutes earlier than I would have otherwise
because I now know I can't beline to where I
(54:30):
need to be. I've got to go completely the opposite direction.
So not happy about that. Understand why the club did it?
Not happy about it? Excessive? Adding security to Austin's group
of twenty supporters was literally laughable.
Speaker 4 (54:44):
I was hilarious. This was so funny, Like.
Speaker 1 (54:48):
Dude, you could have saved that money for an end
of the season party, like you did not need to
spend that money. That was a mess, but that's it
for me. Really really proud of the groups that were there.
I'm proud of the union overall, and I think the
Union thrives when everybody is there working together and responsibly
being great, passionate, crazy supporters. And I look forward to
(55:15):
seeing that when MLS play resumes. I'm sure we'll see
it against Club America as well, although as we'll discuss,
there's split loyalties sometimes, but I look forward to seeing
that when MLS play resumes. Tony and Alex your.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
Thoughts, I mean, I was there in the press box,
and the way sound travels in that stadium, it's it's
a little weird because it's sometimes louder just because it's
right there.
Speaker 4 (55:42):
But you know, even with drums, no drums.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
The way I keep describing it to people, and I
think I said it to you Greg on that postmatch
show was just acoustic, and.
Speaker 4 (55:51):
There's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 2 (55:52):
Nirvana can rock out, Nirvana can bring in the the
grunge and the amp's blown out, but they.
Speaker 4 (56:00):
Also take it back.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
They can also scale it back and get the job
done in a wonderful way. And again a lot of
people decided not to get the towel for themselves. Okay,
if you can get it later, that's fine. You missed
out at least on a great giveaway. But I'm very
happy to see just the people who did show up
as well. I understand a little bit too of why
(56:25):
the three groups weren't there. And I try to give
context because as much as I tried in the press box,
there was context that needed to be given to mister
Ziegler for a lot of these things. But minds were
made up on as far as what the what the
story was gonna be. But you know, at the end
of the day, like this is to support San Diego,
(56:46):
Like this is my my stance. I get asked, are
you a fan of the team? I'm a fan of
San Diego, man. And if there's a team that represents
the team this, I don't care. If it's the Legion,
I don't care. If it's the Mojo, I don't care,
if it's whatever it is. If you have San Diego,
good on you, like, let's go ahead and go. But
I wanted to be great representation of the city. What
we saw against Galaxy is unfortunately a representation of the city.
(57:07):
There's no question, like that's that's it, like they're they'd
like it or not. That's a representation of the city.
There's people around around MLS talk of all like people
were concerned. I was on a Swoon Tower Austin podcast
and they were concerned, the sweetest people.
Speaker 4 (57:22):
Hey, like, what's what should we be worried about? Like
what should we like?
Speaker 2 (57:27):
Nothing like nothing like please nothing, it's it's it's okay,
you're not LA one. And even if you were LA
that can't happen. Like, that can't happen. And I see
people on the podres uh. Just social media too, because
there's fights there and people were tagging, Wow, I thought
we were better than SDFC fans. Well, guess what you
opened yourself up to that they opened up stuff up
(57:47):
to those discussions. But we're here now, there is a
match and the rest of the season to go forward.
I think feelings have been felt, discussions have been had,
and I will commend people who are working voluntier hours
that do not get paid day in, day out or
dealing with this crap, and even the people who are
(58:08):
getting paid for this within the club, Like, hey, kudos
to you. You guys didn't deserve your memory the day
weekend to be ruined the other day. You guys didn't
deserve to have all this extra paperwork. But you know what,
it's your job, so it is what it is. But
at the end of the day, look, it's a celebration,
it's a it's a game.
Speaker 4 (58:22):
It's that's what it is. It's a game.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
It's a children's game if you really think about it, like,
we all get to enjoy it, so there's no reason
to let somebody else enjoy any less. And that's just selfish,
that's the truth. And look, there's there's discussions, there's there's
points to be had, and it's not perfect. It's not
perfect at all whatsoever. But hopefully it's going into a
(58:45):
direction where people can come back. And I'm part of
somebody who believes in restorative justice. And so let's let's
kumbaya a little bit together, make some drum circles together. Hey,
other side, how about you make some practices for the
drum circles. Hey, how about for the drum circles? You
don't make it so like scary for some people. And
if that's the case. Solution oriented have different drum circles,
(59:06):
have a moment in the tailgate before where everybody stops
what they're doing forty five minutes before, comes together. Hey,
we're gonna do a fifteen minute drum circle just to
tune up a bit, tune up the band. Everybody comes
together and then we go together. Like force these situations
of training to happen, these these moments, because yeah, it's
(59:27):
hard to get all these people on the same page.
Not everybody's gonna go underneath the trolley with with the
Daego boys and Barra and Chowels on a weekday and
just lose their minds to practice. It's just not viable, right,
It's just not viable. But I love everybody in that section.
I've been talking with everybody, English, Spanish and everything in between,
and I definitely just empathize with everybody. At the end
(59:47):
of the day, what you do with your money, it's
what you do with your money, and hopefully somebody's there
to support the city of San Diego.
Speaker 5 (59:56):
Yeah, well, said Tony. Yeah, from my.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
It did sound a little different, you know, just watching
it here from from on the TV. But you know,
I really do respect all the people that were out there,
you know, singing and doing their best, and you know,
you're you're, you're providing. I think the thing that we
kind of forget is you're providing the atmosphere that is
(01:00:23):
going to happen when you go to one of these.
Speaker 5 (01:00:25):
Matches and it you're you're, you're part of that.
Speaker 3 (01:00:29):
And when you're not there, you know, people kind of
you know, they they will tend to notice a little bit.
So I I'm all about streaks. I I'm all about like,
you know, who was there from the very first match? Well,
I was there, but then you know, I can't attend
that every every every match, but there there's gonna be
(01:00:52):
some supporters there that are going to be like, hey,
I was there since day one, every every home match.
And I think that's gonna be It's gonna be really cool.
And I think the one thing I will say about
the supporters group that I do want to see eventually.
It doesn't have to be now, it doesn't have to
be you know, anytime soon or any or even then
(01:01:15):
this year, but I do want the supporter section to
somehow get the other fans involved because I can tell
sitting in other sections because I don't sit in the
supporter section.
Speaker 5 (01:01:27):
I like to watch the match.
Speaker 3 (01:01:29):
I like to sit up, you know, in the two
hundreds or wherever else I sit.
Speaker 5 (01:01:35):
I do see kids, I see other.
Speaker 3 (01:01:37):
Fans that kind of want to get involved in the
channing too, and I just I ask, like the supporter section,
can we come up with one chant and figure out
when to do it? It could be pre before everything
gets started, or maybe after halftime, you know, to get
the vibe going again. Can we come up with one
(01:02:00):
chat that everybody can do and pute, you know, put
flyers on the cup holders or something, or you know,
team up with the team and do something so they
can put it up on the on the video board,
you know, something like that. That way everybody can get involved.
Everybody will feel like one team united. And I think
(01:02:22):
that's gonna be the biggest thing for everybody to really
get involved.
Speaker 5 (01:02:27):
When you go to a game at Snapdragon.
Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
Voice of the supporters can't wait to hear them in
full throat once again as SDFC again into the international
break now, and we wrap up with a preview as
Clubamenica comes to town rescheduled originally scheduled for the twenty
first of this month pushed up two weeks to Saturday,
(01:02:51):
June seventh. This is not League's Cup. This is just
an exhibition match, just a friendly San Diego FC and
Club America. So why when we've had all these very
important matches with league points on the line and everything else,
(01:03:12):
why is this one likely to be the next highest
attendance match since the opener in the first match all time?
Please explain to Liga emi ekis. I don't want to
say neophy. I know stuff about the league, but I'm
gonna pretend like I know nothing, pretend like I know nothing,
and explain why Club America matters coming to San Diego
(01:03:36):
for a match that literally doesn't matter.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
Sidebar alex Aquilas and last.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
There's only one answer. There is one and only answer
to this question, and it is Chievas. It's no other team, uh,
Glub of America is hated in my household, in my
family's household, like no other team. I Actually, my mom
(01:04:09):
is the biggest Hieva fan that I'll ever know. She
has every piece of merchandise you could possibly own. She
can honestly wear brum head to toe all Chieva s
gear she can't. So with that said, She texted me
this morning and she said, I see that Sandy UFC
(01:04:30):
is playing Club of America. I hope they lose. I
don't care if it's a friendly. They Sandy UFC needs
to put their a team and they better win.
Speaker 4 (01:04:42):
Well hopefully that's the case.
Speaker 2 (01:04:43):
And we don't know who America is going to bring,
right But this is just literally the Yankees. This is
literally New England Patriots in the height of the dynasty.
Speaker 4 (01:04:58):
This is literally just real.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Madrid is just the biggest television company in Mexico owns
the team like there's just backed by like.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
It's it's the blue bloods of League Amankee's.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
They have the most titles technically speaking, in the history
of Mexico in the first Division.
Speaker 4 (01:05:21):
They're the art Tribals.
Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
That's a ex mentioned of Chivasa, the team that's brass
roots only has Mexican players kind of and they feed
into the Mexican team where America goes out and gets
these signings. It's like, wow, you look look at who
Look did you see what we got? Bum bum some
I know, I mean, I mean these names of like
(01:05:43):
South American like greats, right like oh Ula Yojo you
I eat this and all the best Mexican players.
Speaker 4 (01:05:56):
Oh, they're just gonna end up in America.
Speaker 2 (01:05:57):
Anyways, there's a meme in Mexico where anything happens. I
don't know, if you saw the other day, how many
strikeouts did Ta Taste get you?
Speaker 4 (01:06:06):
Guys got struck out a couple of times the other day.
So whenever that happens there, clip it to America.
Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
Anything that that happens in the world, clip it to
a call of.
Speaker 4 (01:06:20):
That's a penalty for America.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
Like literally they get special treatment, perhaps because they buy reference.
So this is this big, ugly everybody hates team that
is coming to San Diego. But guess what, Just like
they have the amount of haters, they have that many
amount of supporters and fans and they're going to be
coming into San Diego. And I've already been here and
(01:06:44):
I've been talking with people in the supporter.
Speaker 4 (01:06:46):
Groups who I'm like, Hey, I know a big America fans.
So what are you gonna do today? What?
Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
What?
Speaker 4 (01:06:51):
What's the plan? What's the plan? Buco? Are you gonna
have a half? Are you gonna do the split jersey?
Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
Which is absolute sacrilege in the worst, it's the worst. Uh,
what what what what can we expect from you? And
let me tell you, America fans are gonna come out,
and just like Alex said, like it's in the It's
in the zeitgeist beyond anybody who knows soccer, Like this
is everybody who's driving on and listening to radio in Spanish,
(01:07:17):
listening to the border. How much how much weight time
is gonna happen? Oh, America is gonna be here. I'm
gonna buy tickets for that. I know people who don't
watch soccer that know that America is coming in.
Speaker 4 (01:07:27):
And not only that bought tickets. You know who bought tickets.
That's rue. My girlfriend, I'm like, why did you buy tickets?
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
I was like, I wanted to take my nephews. I'm like,
all right, I guess, I guess from America. He's an
America fan. It's a it's a it's a crisis there
actually unfortunately, but is this this is the big bad.
This is the big bad and America is coming into town.
And honestly, I mean, it's gonna be interesting asking the
players for sandifc, Hey, what was it like playing in
(01:07:54):
a way match at your home stadium?
Speaker 3 (01:07:57):
It could be it could be yes, first ever away
match at snap track in Stadium.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
Unbelievable. Now, Club America just played LAFC on a plan
for the Club World Cup and lost. This is an
exhibition friendly. Like a week later, two weeks later, Club
(01:08:25):
America is bringing nobody, right are they bringing their under eighteens? Like?
Who are they bringing in? And of course for San
Diego FC, they're gonna be without seven for international duty
slash injury, so already it's an almost fully rotated lineup
for Los Ninos trying it out, just trying it out,
(01:08:49):
didn't really work, didn't feel it.
Speaker 6 (01:08:52):
But Los Ninos or you know, Minoss, so it just
feels like it's going to wind up being kind of
a weird match.
Speaker 4 (01:09:08):
How do you know that they're playing their backups?
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
Creg Have you ever seen a one hundred and twenty
five on the back of a jersey?
Speaker 1 (01:09:17):
Oh my god? When I went to a Sholos match
and somebody checked in and they were like number one
hundred ninety two, what we're gonna be out?
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
That's that's you know, because the numbers mean something, right,
Like numbers in soccer mean a lot. If you get
a primary number one through ten, that means you're the
best of the best. I mean eleven because obviously eleven players,
but that just means that there's a there's a pedigree
that you've earned, You've earned your stripes.
Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
I know in football.
Speaker 2 (01:09:46):
I never played American football, but sometimes you know you
earn your stickers I guess in preseason because you go
through it and you start to slowly go from one
hundred to the two digits, the sixties, and then eventually
if you crack in, you our earning of it. One
through eleven because that you're designated as that's your position.
When we talk about hey, yepes, First off, he's a six.
(01:10:09):
Oh what does that mean? He's not just one the
best one through eleven? Like he's earned that number, He's
worked for it.
Speaker 5 (01:10:17):
Yeah that's true, man. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:10:20):
I was just kind of wondering, like, are we going
to see Alejandro sendejas In in this match?
Speaker 5 (01:10:26):
Maybe? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:10:28):
He played for FC Dallas, he played here in the States,
spend some time with the Chivas.
Speaker 5 (01:10:35):
He's a he's a trader. Most likely, maybe we'll see
Walter Portales. Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
He he played with the Galaxy. He's an l A native.
You know, we'll probably see him out for a Globe
of America and yeah, well we'll we'll see who who
shifts up for this match, you know, for on the
on the Club of America side, but on the SDFC side,
that's gonna be interesting. I think we're gonna see a
(01:11:04):
lot more younger players than than we've seen, uh, you know,
on the roster for match day. You know, I'm for
someone who I'm excited to kind of see if he
does if he's on on the either starting eleven or
on the bench. I I do want to see one
(01:11:25):
who Dua if he if he plays out in the midfield.
I think when when we first signed him, I I
kind of kind of saw kind of like the back
back of the baseball card, right.
Speaker 5 (01:11:38):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:11:38):
The guy is six foot four and I'm like, damn
that he's big for a midfielder, and he I think
he has a little bit of size and strength and
speed to him. So I I do hope that he
gets the opportunity to play some minutes and and hopefully,
you know, we can see a little bit from him,
because we we really don't see that much from Dua.
(01:12:03):
The other kid that I do want to see, the
sixteen year old uh SAIDI that's another kid that I
do want to see play in this match, just because
we don't have that, you know, that second league, the
second team that we you know, we can see stats
from and you know see that see them play on.
Speaker 5 (01:12:24):
A regular basis.
Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
So this is this is their opportunity to play, and
uh yeah, I do hope that this is their their
their chance and we we finally get get to see
a little bit of the of the death of the team, Tony.
Speaker 1 (01:12:39):
Is there any chance that we see the man who
you continue to hold up a card for, like the
limousine driver at the airport at terminal two? Is there
any chance?
Speaker 5 (01:12:53):
Yeah, mister John do himself.
Speaker 4 (01:12:58):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
He celebrates whenever he Sandy WEFC wins. So I got
the ripped, but I'm gonna keep it. Yeah. Is he alive?
Is he a person? Yeah, he's out there. I don't
think so. I really don't think so. Just it's just
this knee issue is just becoming just longer and lingering,
(01:13:19):
and it's just such a big mystery where he just
might appear, because last time he appeared, he was still
on the ramp up for recovery and he just kind
of decided Okay, he can play a full ninety or
at least be a starter. He decided against that got
himself a red card. Maybe disagree with Mikey Badis, like,
(01:13:39):
maybe I'm not ready, but I don't think we see
him what we do.
Speaker 4 (01:13:43):
I do think we see Ian Pilcher back in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
We saw him against Austin the first time around, kind
of you know, took him a second to adjust to
the match. But I also think we were gonna see
Bruceth for the first time as well. Just on that
starting lineup, that center midfield from STFC part of the
expansion draft. It's and outside of that, there's not a
(01:14:07):
lot I can't tell say there's a lot of depth
that's left to be seen. Yeah, sure up, but how
many deal We've seen him be featured a couple of
times as well, but there's there's not a lot of
depth there. Maybe in goal POA I could see him playing.
Uh he is going to be available for media tomorrow
Mexican goalkeeper. Uh so maybe that's where you give those
(01:14:29):
Santosa much needed rest as well.
Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
All Right, so some rotations expected, including in the stands.
I already saw SDFC putting out things such as, you know,
no bottles will be allowed, as they call it an
all poor event, so they aren't just opening your can
of beer for you anymore. They are going to pour
it out. I found out when they did this for
(01:14:55):
Galaxy they also make you pour out your water or
your gatorade, which really because it's much better to have
that bottle to open and close. But nonetheless, that's what
it's gonna be. And there's also going to be you know,
you go out the gate that you came in, so
they're going to treat it like Glube America is an
(01:15:18):
LA group. I'm sure there will be a huge Clube
America supporter presence in the stadium because I've seen them
for just random exhibition things. I think Clube America played
one of those summer friendlies, you know, and there was
a huge supporter presence, so I'm sure that will be there,
and as such, it will be a vibrant atmosphere for
(01:15:44):
a meaningless game. I just I gotta hold my hand
up here, just as somebody who comes from other sports
and you know, trolls in those worlds, and when the
season starts, you don't stop to play a pretend game. That, like,
people are so excited for this match, and I'm I'm
just being a hundred with you and with the audience.
(01:16:06):
This is the first match in SDFC history that I
don't care about. I don't care. I hope no one
gets hurt. We'll be back next week to talk about it.
You know. The rotations will be interesting. That's the part
I'm interested in is the rotations. But the result is
(01:16:26):
meaningless to me. This is a good thing for the
club because they're gonna collect a lot of money from
a lot of folks who paid to go see America,
and America is gonna laugh because they're gonna take their
portion of the gate and they're gonna walk out with
a bunch of guys that are wearing number one hundred
and thirty four and number two hundred and sixty.
Speaker 4 (01:16:46):
Yeah, it's all it is, man, It's all about the money. Alex.
Speaker 5 (01:16:51):
Yeah. At a friendly.
Speaker 3 (01:16:54):
It's one of two friendlies so far that's gonna happen
this season. The other one's gonna happen with the clue
Tijuana Lostlos Yeah, the Cholos.
Speaker 1 (01:17:03):
I mean that's a little different for me because that's
cross border. You know, America is kind of like, you know,
and it's gonna be kids in America outfits, just like
when when Manchester United showed up it was fifteen year
olds wearing United kids and legends in the stands. You know,
it was like, hang on, there are any of you
(01:17:23):
actually playing for Manchester United when you get back to
Old Trafford or any you're gonna be there, because I'm
not sure you're here at Snapdragon, but you guys gonna
show up in the real games. Okay, all right, Well
that's that for that. I don't even I'm not even
going to prefer any thoughts as to it. We'll talk
(01:17:44):
about it again next week, but that's it for episode
number two of the Cromaniacs podcast. Hopefully you're enjoying what
we're doing, everybody who's supporting the show. Thanks to all
the great people who came up both before and during
the match and was like, hey, love the podcast, love
what you guys are doing. That's what we need. That's
(01:18:05):
when I hear something like that, that's what we need,
you know. That's that gets me going, That gets me
fired up. So thanks to everybody who has been supporting us.
Thanks to Little Shadows for giving us our theme song
