Speaker 1 (00:28):
Welcome to the Chromniacs, everybody your weekly look inside San
Diego FC and MLS. Coming to you from San Diego, California.
I'm Craig Elston, joined once again by my two partners
in Chrome or Crime. It's Tony Sanchez and Alex Payana. Tony,
how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
I am good.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
I'm learning some new things about San Diego. Hey, from
wildfires and I guess there's fire apps.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
But everybody's safe.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Interesting times, but you know what, it's a some rough
soccer and it's beginning with a hot one because any
UFC ended into a break on a really good note.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Alex, Yeah, I'm here repping you know, CNUFC, here with
my brand new shirt given to me by my lovely
girlfriend Monica. And you know what, it's a it's a
conversation starter because I was on a teams meeting earlier
today and they saw the shirt. They were like, hey, SDFC,
what's that all about? So I got to explain to

(01:29):
them about the new team we have in town. And
also if they want to check us out, you know,
go to Chromaniacs and learn more about them.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
And it's it's.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Great to have those conversations with with my coworkers. But
it's also you know, just you know better to have
those conversations with you two, Tony and Craig. So I'm
excited to talk some SDFC football here.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
All right, Well, we got a fun one lined up
coming off of one of the best wins. It's one
of the things we'll talk about, one of the best
wins that we've seen in the young history of San
Diego FC. Episode number four of Chromaniacs and we are

thank you, thank you for your support. All right, let's
get into it today on Cromaniacs. We're going to talk
about the playoff upside of this club. We're going to

(03:17):
talk about the upcoming transfer window. Have our opinions changed
in terms of what direction this team needs to go
given the results that they are putting up and the
way that they are pushing for first place in the
Western Conference. We're going to look back at that four
to two win over Minnesota. We'll be doing that shortly,
including the way that supporters took it in at al Smith.

(03:41):
And then we're going to get into Vancouver White Camps.
Because this being a Thursday show, the next time the
club is going to play is next Wednesday, when they
are up in Vancouver taking on the White Camps for
a battle truly for first place in MLS Western Conference.

(04:01):
So all of that as the show continues, and to
everybody who has watched us on YouTube, that's the one
place it and say hey, thumbs up, like subscribe San
Diego Puttle football like subscribe. Okay, I think we've done
all of our housekeeping. We hope that you love us
and can show it digitally, you know, both by giving

(04:23):
us a thumbs up with your digits and also by
typing on the machine. Okay, in my opinion, you can't
take Away to nil at Galaxy when they're raising the banner,
when they're lifting MLS Cup. It's the first match in

(04:46):
the history of your franchise, and you win to nil
at Galaxy. In context, of course, as the year goes
on and Galaxy stinks and settles to the very bottom,
you know, like a wet sneaker sinking to the bottom
of the river. They've sunk to the bottom of the
standings table, it makes you think, well, yeah, okay, you

(05:10):
beat Galaxy at Galaxy, But I mean that's gonna be
That's not one of your wins of the year. I
will say, because it's the first in the first match
and all of the history and pomp and circumstances surrounded that,
that is the biggest win in SDFC history. But guys,
four to two Away at Minnesota, is this the next
biggest win in the history of the Chrome and azul Tony.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
I have to say yes, Like this was a game
where you know, you go into a hostile territory where
it's really that defining of the air. The layers are separating,
you throw oil and water, They're going to start separating eventually.
And there was a lot of talk, hey, is Sandy
UFC gonna even be a contender for playoffs? Seems like

(05:56):
they are halfway through the season almost now they're going
to play against some big boy. There was some talk about, hey,
they can't do it against the teams on the top
of the table, can they? Well, they just did. And
look at the way that they did it with the
pieces that are missing that are so integral to the
part to the way that San Diego FC now identifies
on the pitch. It's incredible And I'll cry it to

(06:17):
Mikey Vadas and the team all round because this was
probably the biggest win in their history in the MLS.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, I have to agree with with you, Tony. You know,
huge three points.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
It was.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
It was a stark contrast from when.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
They played the Seattle Sounders, when they were kind of
just they just wanted to point in that situation away
and you could tell this time a little bit you know,
being the shark in the water. They knew they they
you know, they could smell the blood. They knew the
they the Minnesota was down a few few people because

(06:56):
of the Gold Cup, and yeah, they wanted to take
advantage of that, and it was it was a big
three points given the fact that and we'll talk about
this later Minnesota United did lose against Columbus Crew and
now you know they have a chance to play for first.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Against the against Vancouver.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
But when, yeah, when you anytime you can get three
points away, that's huge. That's a big, big win for
San diegofc the.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Reason why I would put it at that spot on
the list as well, so we're all in agreement. This
is the next biggest win in the history of the franchise,
and probably in terms of actual weight on the table,
this is number one right now. But to me, the
biggest reason is you did a couple of things in

(07:50):
this match that an expansion side could be expected to
do from time to time that lead to losses that
you go, well, you know, these are the mistakes that
happen in a first year club, and this particular Saturday
night was not CJ. Dos Santos's night. The own goal
is one on him. We're showing the replay once again.

(08:14):
I mean McVay sends a bouncing pass backwards, but that's
one on the goalkeeper. He was caught flat footed, he
was late and slow to react and he didn't trap
the ball. And honestly, the second goal was entirely, in
my opinion, on him. There's very few times that you
can look at at a goal and not say, well,
the defense this. And you can always say the defense this,

(08:35):
This midfielder that you know, positioning allowing the shot to go.
But the one thing you're not supposed to do is
release that ball, spill it right in the middle, allow
for the second rush, the oncoming rush of players to
have an easy rebound. And that's what the second shot is.
That it's just leaving a tasty burger right in the

(08:58):
middle and saying, please come and join, a lovely snack
for you. And it was in the second goal. So
you win on a night when both those things happened.
I mean, that's that's good. That's winning on not your
best day and winning by two on the road on
not your best day. That shows you have versatility in purpose,

(09:20):
You have the ability to overcome mistakes, even those of
your own making, Alex, I think it's really an encouraging sign.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Yeah, really good, especially with the players that we had
on the pitch. Right, we had Ian Pilchrist start for
the first time since that Austin FC match, and and
you know, the back line held up, you know, just
allowing those two goals and and the rest of the
team was able to create those opportunities and and get those.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
Those four goals that we needed. Right.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
I do want to hear from Tony on the second goal, right,
it is a goalkeeper supposed to do there when you know, well,
you know, the the lead up to that goal, the
build up to it was actually I was pretty impressed
by that because it was like three passes on the
far side just really quickly. I could tell that we

(10:19):
were a little flat footed.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
And then they tried to clear the ball.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
He couldn't clear the ball, and then beya, he got
the Yeah, he was able to you know, get a
shut off and then Boa was able to clean it up.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
But as a goalkeeper, what are you supposed to do there?

Speaker 3 (10:39):
So and this is where you know, Craig, I agree
with you, like this is on him because it's elementary
in the drills where you get this exact situation.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
The book says, you have to carry it out like every.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Single time unless you're one thousand percent sure you're going
to trap that ball. Clearly, there was some a little
bit of a ricochet right there where it does take
a little bit of a of a hit off of
McVeigh as he tries to deflect it, but it's already
going in that same direction right there. But even then

(11:16):
you're supposed to just get it onto the side. It's
and it's a if if you still do spill it.
It's a harder angle for the not number one nine
to be able to come in and cut through an
angle and shoot. But it's difficult, but it's it's it's elementary,
is the thing like that's that's at the end of
the day.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
He has to get that parry it to the side,
and you know, clean it up.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
It's it's a even if you're not sure, even if
it's a slow roller, you're taught. If you're not sure,
just get rid of it out quite out. That's what
you need to do in that situation. But yeah, and
earlier too. Another another time there was a goal that
was dis allowed. It could have been another goal as well,
or Minnesota.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
So with that said, and not trying to diss on
Dos Santos, everyone's going to have a bad game on
the team. When the goalkeeper has a bad game, My
point is usually you lose, yes, and then everybody is
pointing fingers and saying, well, what about?

Speaker 2 (12:14):
What about? What about?

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Questions are being asked. This Niega is starting to get
loose in the back, you know, and instead you win,
and that's just pretty much erased, and it just becomes
literally a podcast discussion topic instead of a discussion topic
within the walls of Singing Hills for SDFC Brass, Now

(12:37):
here's what I want to ask you guys, because we're
getting we're past the official halfway point, we're into the
second half, we're getting toward the All Star break, we're
getting toward the summer transfer window, and here sit Los
Gramados within striking range of first place in the Western Conference.

(13:04):
We have seen in the past, whether it be LAFC,
whether it be Saint Louis City, we have seen teams
come in and even in their first year, be extremely
competitive within MLS where you've got a realistic shot at
MLS Cup. So what my question is to you is,
with this result in the back pocket, with this extra

(13:26):
data added in to the picture, how has this changed
your look at this team's playoff upside as its ability
to get to winter as a team still playing Tony coahead.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah, I mean they've been getting it done.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
And the thing about a San Diego team, it's always
going to be in question is can they do it
in different situations, in different altitudes and different climates and
different you know, you do train in singing hills, And
I joke with people who work at singing Hills that
think that the past two months have been I'm like, no, no, no,
just wait, just wait for uh October, late September.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, that's when you'll feel feel and singing hills.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
But so far they've been up to up to the
task and they've been able to get it done. But
the young legs do worry me because the young legs
start to get a little bit tired and fatigue, and
that's where the experience of other players can really turn on.
And that's the latter half of the season where it's
a little bit more measured how they play. But if

(14:29):
they stick to this system and Mikey Bodis and this
team have been have proven to be able to maintain
this steady pace.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
I think it's a machine that's just a metronome that's gonna.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Just slowly drip drip, drip, drop I drop, and they
could potentially take this as far as they want to,
I think at this point from what we've seen into
the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Yeah, what I'm hearing, Tony is that Mikey Varas is
saving Andres Rey is for for a deep playoff run.
That's what I'm hearing in my ears. He Yeah, he
did score a goal in the in the semi final.
I'm just saying, you know, it could happen. But yeah,

(15:14):
I really do believe you're right. And when it comes
to guys that haven't really played but do have those
MLS minutes, when it when it comes to Frank Franco,
Nigri Laffelson, those guys might need to step up in
the season really cover some minutes for for Bombino and Alvarado, right,

(15:41):
and you know, maybe rotate some guys in late late
in the season, and yeah, they should be able to
make this deep run. I don't I don't see anything
that prevents that from happening. MLS gives you like opportunity
if you're a decent team, and I've seen teams that

(16:03):
are the most five hundred team make the playoffs, right,
you know, you just get in. There's a playing game,
you know, which is like a wildcard game, and then
you know whatever happens after that. Yeah, yeah, let's not
be a let's not be a ninth seed place.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
Yeah, let's not be a ninth seed.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
But yeah, we're way beyond being like a five hundred team.
I think we're going to be in the somewhere in
the top three seeds. And you know, as much as
and I think we should be hosting plenty of playoff
games at Snapdragon.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
I love it. The answer to my own question would be, Hey, Craig,
shut up, you enjoy the ride. It's a first year team.
They're doing really, really well. And if you told me,
in all honesty, if you told me this team is
going to have a great regular season in its first year,
I would say that's exactly what this club needs is

(17:07):
a great regular season. Do they need to win MLS
Cup or play for MLS Cup this year? No, they don't.
If they lose in the playoffs, I think everyone is
going to be satisfied with the year that they had overall.
If they have any kind of success in League's Cup,
you know, I think people will be really really excited
about that. So as a first year team, the club's

(17:30):
playoff upside, I think it's still to be determined. I
think that the summer wears on. I think Tony said it, well,
we get it gets hotter the longer it goes. And
those are the questions that still need to be answered
by San Diego FC. And also within that transitioning leads
to the question of who's going to be on the

(17:51):
team as the summer wears on. Milanoloski is on a
loan from FC Norsechland now FC norchaland is a I
don't know what you call it, a sister club, a
brother club, an affiliate, part of.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
A cousin from the other side of the pund you know, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Each other, you know, brother from another mother, Yeah, a
cousin from around the way, however you want to put it.
There's obviously a cooperative agreement. So in theory, if STFC
wants Lasky on the team for the rest of the year,
they can do that. But the current situation has an

(18:38):
expiration date, doesn't it.

Speaker 5 (18:40):
Alex.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
I feel like there's a decision that has to be
made pretty soon here.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Yeah, that's correct.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
Yeah you could. I think there's a couple of things
you could do, right. You could talk to the sister
club and say, hey, we want to sign this guy Bremer.
Then I'm pretty sure that that can happen. Or you
can ask for a lone extension and that could also
happen too, you know, extend them for another six months

(19:12):
or so. But yeah, he is really Yeah, he's a
part of this club now, and I think Mike Varus
said the best, right, He's not going anywhere. They're going
to try to do everything they can do keep him
here for this playoff run that we believe this team
can can be on. And we have everything that he's done.

(19:37):
I mean, he's coming on the pitch and scoring goals.
That's what Milana Alaski does. He scored goals all the time,
and I'm excited to have him here. It's very exciting
to watch him play. I hope his role gets a
little bit more extended as we continue the season. And yeah,

(19:58):
I think it's I think how having Alaski here is
just benefiting everybody, right, It's just benefits the team, it
benefits himself.

Speaker 5 (20:07):
He's getting really good exposure.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
To the point that I was I was hearing the
Looney Bin podcast and they're talking about Milana Aloski the
Minnesota United podcast, and they were talking about Alaski because
they were like, man, this gud, this gid's really impressive.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
He just came on and scored two goals like nothing.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
So yeah, he he we yeah, there there's a way
to make a deal here, and I hope they can
make that soon.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
I don't mean to be Sandy O Soccer TMZ, I guess,
but you know, it's a break. Tyler Heaps and his
UH and his wife are enjoying Cabo. I think I
saw Milaniloski also enjoying Cabo. And you know how these
things happen in vacations.

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Weren't the same, uh A hotel, Bobby? What are you
doing next?

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Way?

Speaker 2 (21:05):
What do you guys do? What are you doing for
the next six months?

Speaker 3 (21:08):
I at at the end of the transmission after the game,
you see Milanilowski talked to Tyler and I asked him like, hey,
what was that about? And you can see that Iloski
wants to stay. Mikey Vada said, yeah, he's not going
anywhere you want. It's he's in the plans. So again,
I don't we talked about it last week. I don't
find a reason not to keep Milanilowski at least for

(21:31):
the rest of the season.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
Like the the more that this happens, the more it develops,
the more exciting it gets to me. Guys, Chucky Lozano
is somebody we knew was going to be the fulcrum
of the offense and a great player. Andres Dryer maybe
you didn't know his game, but you knew as the
as the DP being signed to the second DP, this
guy was going to be really important. He's turned out
to be probably arguably a little better than imagine. But

(22:00):
if this club hasn't had an effective nine, that's been
the one thing that's been unplugged offensively until Eloski comes around.
And now it's like, well, yeah, the nine's unplugged until
they put him in, and then he scores a goal
or two and it's like, oh, well, if you put
him in the seventy fifth, they'll score one goal. Now
we turn out if he's put him into the forty fifth,

(22:20):
he'll score two goals. I mean, god forbid, you started
the kid? What if he scored three?

Speaker 5 (22:27):
You know? Did?

Speaker 1 (22:29):
He almost did? So this is my question, like, how
good can Milan Eloski be? Is this an MLS All
Star and he's playing like it in his minute per
minute performance? He shows up in goals arrive, he scores,
not just the ball finding him. He has scored athletic,

(22:52):
acrobatic goals. He's got that classic knack for goal. He
knows where to be, he knows where to find the
slot where he's gonna get the shot. How good can
Aloski be?

Speaker 5 (23:08):
The limit?

Speaker 2 (23:09):
I don't know, Alex.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Do you remember about a guy named Haabera Nandez who
once went over to Manchester United and was behind number
nine Dimitar Bevetov who was paid for and he's the guy,
and goals per minute for Chicharito were through the roof,
And then it was the same question, why isn't he starting?

Speaker 2 (23:30):
Why isn't he starting? Well? The place where they one
ended up winning.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
A championship is by having Chicharito in that super subrol
that entire season. And so while I get every like,
hey starting Lski, why aren't we starting Luski like he's
been in the perfect spot and Mikey Vadas is credit
to that moment, right, You're very fortunate because in a
way because in Boston can't play the full ninety. He's

(23:55):
still nursing that injury coming back. But Milanilowski in the
time that he comes in as I don't know what
it is, but he just turns it on. But can
he do it? Can you afford to do that against
an upcoming of Vancouver that's number one in the in
the West. Can you afford to starting me laon Loski
right now? Or do you kind of go with what's

(24:16):
been working. I don't know, that's I'm glad that's not
my question to answer. Mikey has to deal with that.

Speaker 4 (24:22):
Yeah, And I think you also are trying to build
him up too. This is the first time he's had all,
you know, a half to himself and you're still trying
to build him up, build those minutes to him, and yeah,
he actually might be a threat late in the season
where he yeah, he can't play it.

Speaker 5 (24:40):
Full ninety and he's he's.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
Got fresher legs and most of the players in the
MLS that have been starting this whole whole season.

Speaker 5 (24:47):
So yeah, I see, I see that point.

Speaker 4 (24:49):
I also see the point where like, yeah, we want
to see him now because you really don't have a nine.
Uh the finish, yes, this one, the the it was
the the run was incredible, but the finish was so
spectacular too, because that's what's been missing for Sandy UFC. Right,
we don't have that guy that can really go in

(25:12):
and finish. Dryer has had his moments, Shookie too, but
we don't have that third guy that can really go
out there and complete the entire run like Aloski did. Yeah,
that was incredible to watch, and you know, I really
I'm hoping for more more moments like that, and yeah,

(25:32):
maybe maybe maybe the formula might be just keep them
fresh right now and you know, keep maybe down the
road you start to give him those ninety minutes later
in the season maybe.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
So I just think he's becoming one of the real
stories of the season. You know, a local player brought
in on loan and all of a sudden, you know,
played at Orange County s C. Which means it's one
of those like if you know, you know things, you
know that was a pretty good team up there. Orange
County sc Well, the other segos that come on man

(26:07):
Orange County. What are you talking about? Where were they
playing man outside the bus depot? Well kind of, but.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
He did play with Ronaldo, I'll tell you that much, Alex.
You knew that, right, you must get played with Ronaldo.
So maybe that's where he got it with uh Damas,
but Ronaldo Damas.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
But nonetheless Ronaldo nonetheless really looking forward to seeing how
his story continues. All right, what are you guys hearing
in terms of the transfer window? That third DP slot?
Are the the Cormado is gonna get greedy? Are they

(26:46):
gonna fill it up? Are they looking for? Does this
team need a major upgrade? Or again over here just
beating the Aulowski drum over and over again. If he's
the nine you need, do you really need to go
spend assets, blood, treasure resources on bringing someone else into
the program. So does this team need a big move

(27:08):
or does it just maybe need a couple of little moves?

Speaker 3 (27:12):
I'll different to you, Alex, because you're the like MLS,
what what what?

Speaker 2 (27:15):
What works here?

Speaker 1 (27:16):
Like?

Speaker 2 (27:16):
What's the usual move that you see?

Speaker 4 (27:20):
Well, most teams during the summer transfer window, they do
bring in that big name right, Marco Royce was one
of them. Last summer, right l a La Galaxy got
him Oliviator Rude, which that that move hadn't worked out
the way l a ANC wanted it to until recently

(27:43):
he started scoring goals again. But yeah, you hear the
Oliviator Ruds and Marco Royce's of the world that are.
You know, they've played in Europe, they had a spectacular
career and now they're making that move to MLS. We
haven't seen any thing or heard anything. I haven't really
seen anything come through. Maybe it's something that's going to

(28:07):
happen like in a month or two from now, where
players are starting to announce their what their moves are
going to be before the European season starts back up again.
But yeah, when when you ask the question is it
going to be a one big move a couple of
small moves, I think it's all going to be dependent
on the roster construction that STFC wants to see. Right,

(28:32):
they can have an under twenty two roster construction, or
they can have the DP roster construction. That's and that's
something that you kind of have to declare in the
MLS or you've got to be.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
One or the other.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
You could be under you know, have build out your
under twenty two spots, or you can do one or
the other. But if you add another DP, you'll you'll
be a DP team. And yeah, I feel like you
could probably have you know, you could add an under
twenty two that's gonna be someone for the future and

(29:10):
also do the DP. And I think for this season,
because it is the inaugural season, it is the first
season for SANDIUUFC, I say go big, go big and
get if there's someone out there that's interested in coming
to MLS, yeah, go for it because I know the

(29:34):
structure and Tony can get into this and a little
bit that the.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
Structure that San UFC wants to be.

Speaker 4 (29:41):
They really want to beloup their own and become a
much younger squad. So why not this year the first season.
If there is someone out there that you're you know,
that wants to come through from Europe or elsewhere, I
say sign them. I say make the big move and
get them here, and yeah, let's go for a trophy.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
I know that there's like a buffet of players that
are coming through the club World Cup. I know, you know,
from from hearing some of the insiders through MLS and
what that's been happening is a lot of scouts being
sent to these games and you see already some big
names going to.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
The Anti Correa who played in Atletico Madrid.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
Like, just the caliber of players that you're exposing to
the United States is one of the things that MLS
can really get into. And sandu UFC has a very
good standing with the international market, and they have somebody
with Tyler Heaps's background where who's has a pedigree of
working with Monaco.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
That's a name that can in a credential.

Speaker 3 (30:44):
It's like, wow, okay, you know what you're talking about
in the development era. So I know that there is
scouts being sent over to the Club World Cup just
in general, just to see what's out there and just
put the feelers out. But I also think that Tyler
Heaps and aren't going to be looking for some more
depth for this team, because that's one thing that you know,

(31:05):
you have all the youth in the world, but you
need to bring some somebody's gonna slide in between Godoi
and or somebody that can just kind of help out
in case later on the year you need those legs.

Speaker 1 (31:21):
Can you? I just wanted to follow up again. I
think there's a lot of folks listening that are MLS
newbies or first year can you? And if this is
a bad question or overly too much calculus, let me know.
But like you said that, there's you can be a
DP team or you can be an under twenty two team.

(31:44):
So what are we now and what's what's the lever
that's pulled? So if we get a third designated player,
what does that come at the cost of in terms
of under twenty two development? Or can you sign everybody?

Speaker 5 (32:00):
I think, well.

Speaker 4 (32:04):
You can be I think right now we're under twenty
two club with when I first checked the season roster construction,
there is a there is a roster construction if someone
would google it, anyone can google it, just a roster
construction MLS and you can see what we are.

Speaker 5 (32:25):
This was before the season. I think this was back
in February.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
So we have, yeah, the under twenty two which will
build out your under twenty two slots, which I think
there's like about four or five, and then you have
your your designated player slots, and we have one designated
player slot available, and then we do have I believe

(32:52):
two under twenty two slots available, so during the transfer
window you can switch. So, right, if we're under twenty
two roster construction, you can switch over to the designated
player roster construction. If you do want to add to

(33:12):
that third slot, you know, I don't know what you
gotta do. Just declare it, I guess declare, hey, we're
going to add another player, and MLS is like, okay,
then you're now.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
A doesn't it a player team?

Speaker 4 (33:28):
But yeah, it doesn't do I think the only thing
that that's gonna hurt is like, well, you know, we'll
probably not have that slot for the future, for the
under twenty two slots, but I think, yeah, I think
it changes season to season.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
So if we so if we.

Speaker 4 (33:49):
Sign someone maybe a couple, you know, for a couple
of years, then you know that person will you know,
sign somewhere else and then we could bring on another
under twenty two. Yeah, these things, you know, are always
in blocks, they kind of go in motion and so
but yeah, Tony, do you have anything else aid to
my roster converction?

Speaker 3 (34:10):
There's just so many different chips to play at this table, right,
it's you can come in and use dollars you can use,
Monopoly money, you can use and everything has a different stipulation.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
For like international slots.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
There's only two hundred and forty one international slots across
all thirty teams, and an international slot could be used
as a chip or leverage in a trade. Now, additionally,
and this is where MLS kind of like, why let's
just strip it down, but they're introducing this season now
you can buy a player outright cash. You don't need

(34:42):
to have any trade, you don't need to have for
the first time, you can just exchange a player for
legal tender and you can go ahead and have that
player within MLS.

Speaker 2 (34:52):
So that's an additional layer to that.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
Right now, there is that slot where there's a fork
in the road. SDFC can become that third DP team
considered third DP team, or if they go with the
youth they can get somebody who's up and coming more
promising that they can qualify almost like a franchise tag
and say, hey, this is what we're becoming.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
We're gonna go the youth level and youth way do
you have a player?

Speaker 3 (35:15):
Now that kind of you doesn't impact the ceiling of
the cap as much because you kind of have them
in this little capsule and vessel going into that.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
It's it's it's complicated. It's it's it doesn't it's complicated, Craig.
I'm so sorry.

Speaker 4 (35:29):
And I think that's why I said, like, hey, you know,
you should go big now because I always I feel
like this this team is going to be in the
under twenty two for a long time. They'll probably gonna
be under twenty two, you know, maybe their whole existence,
the majority of their existence.

Speaker 5 (35:49):
So it's gonna be focused on youth.

Speaker 4 (35:50):
So that's why this year I would go big, Go
go get the third designated player.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Do you think it change which is the calculus for
Tyler Heaps? Just being in second place, being two points
off the conference lead, being five points off the supporter's
shield lead. Does that in any way effect or is
he committed to process and the results that are coming

(36:20):
out aren't going to affect the process.

Speaker 3 (36:23):
It has to change the way Tyler is definitely thinking
at this point, because you got to strike while the
iron's hot. It's boiling hot right now, and you need
to be able to keep that consistency. You hear it
all the time, act like you've been there Tyler Heaps
needs to act like this is the twentieth season in
MLS existence, and this is the third time that they're

(36:45):
have a chance at playoffs and they've been here, and
they need to keep a cool, calm and collect It's
something that SDFP has done throughout this year on the
field and off the field as well as they try,
but at the end of the day, it's one of
the things that can they maintain this consistency with the
players that they have right now?

Speaker 2 (37:02):
I think it's proven. Can they add some accents?

Speaker 3 (37:05):
Can they add a cool, fancy spoiler and make a
cool you know, make it, make it marginally faster? Sure,
but is that going to ruin the aesthetic of SDFC.
Is it going to ruin the chemistry how this team
already gels and vibes. That's something else that Tyler has
to weigh in heavily, because if Mikey says I don't
need anybody and you need to spend and you force

(37:25):
somebody in that, that can just spoil a locker room
and I don't think there's room.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
For that here.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
You had Grandpa McVeigh at twenty eight leading the young
Lings this last game against Minnesota, twenty eight years old.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
He's the veteran of that defense. That's incredible.

Speaker 3 (37:39):
Like, but you know, some more, more, more to come
for San Diego FC and trades in the upcoming window,
I know for sure.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
Yeah, I want to see I want to see more defense.
I want to see more defense. I'd like where the
offense is. I want more defensive depth. I'm still concerned
about that side of the that side of the pitch
wearing down as the year goes on. Okay, as we
start to look ahead, let's talk about a voice of

(38:11):
the supporter and Alex you know, I have to offer
my regrets. I don't know if Chris Garcia came wound
up finding his way to al Smith that night. Maybe
you can tell me if you saw him. But he
and I played golf and Escondido Saturday morning, which turned
more into Saturday midday, and it was nineties and it

(38:32):
was muggy, and the round took about five and a
half hours to finish, from the point that we left
the starter to the point that we turned the cards in,
And by the time I got home, I was completely
and utterly gassed. It was like four forty five when
I got home and I'm like, I am not. There's

(38:52):
just no way. So I watched it here at home.
But Alex, you got the chance to be there along
with all the supporters groups together. It felt, from everything
I've heard, like obviously a good time had by all,
but also a lovely night of healing and friendship amidst
all the crews.

Speaker 5 (39:12):
Yeah, it was a It was a really great time.

Speaker 4 (39:15):
I was kind of just in a neighborhood where got
a haircut over at Pappy Shout out Pappy's and uh
and at St SU and we had me and Monica,
we had some lunch and then we were like, you know,
the game's about to start.

Speaker 5 (39:30):
How about we, you know, go over to Elsmith.

Speaker 4 (39:32):
And join the supporters group there from that to SD
And as soon as we walked in, yeah, we we
saw the supporters were out in the back in the
in the brewery next to the golf simulators, and uh, man,
you you can hear them from out front, and you
can hear them right from from the you know that

(39:52):
front of that the tap room, and man, yeah, they
got the party going and it was last out. People were,
you know, chanting and singing along and it was a
really great time. Yeah, when when the first wall happened,
you know, it got a little quiet, but then uh

(40:13):
that was the Minnesota goal. But then Dryer with with
the shot from midfields kind of woke everybody up. Right,
Like two minutes later we were we were back and
singing again. So oh man, I had a great time. Yeah,
we both did. We had tons of fun. Uh yeah,
so shout out to all the sporters that that were there.

Speaker 5 (40:35):
I didn't see Memes though, Brandon. I was looking for
a guy in orange hat the whole time and I
didn't see him.

Speaker 4 (40:43):
I know, when when he's with you, Yeah, see the
headline and look for the head that's above and that
would have been him. Yeah. Yeah, I was looking the
whole time, like where is he? I know he's out
here somewhere, and yeah, I didn't see him. But you know,
great great. I'm at El Smith. I know that San
Diego FC hosted their own watch party some somewhere in downtown,

(41:07):
but I think the real party was at Al Smith
with the supporters, like they really they did a good job,
you know, thanks to El Smith for hosting all of us,
and they provided some good beers. The you know, the
beers were flowing. Everybody was chanting and singing. By the
end of it, we were all jumping up and down
because we saw Alasky's fourts goal and yeah, great time.

(41:31):
You know, can't wait to do it again with all
the supporters and hang out with you guys.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
You know, Tony. As Alex was giving his report, it
occurred to me that we're forty ish minutes into the
podcast and that was the first mention of Dryer scoring
from midfield doing his Charlie galasso and you know, putting
it in from from being on the midfield stripe, and
like literally we talked about the game and how good

(41:58):
it was and this and this and this and the
key thing and the last game we we skipped the
goal of the ear like.

Speaker 2 (42:06):
It's just so casual.

Speaker 3 (42:07):
It's just like how good they're doing right, Like it's
almost like, yeah, we know that happened, like you were.
And I had the point too that you were starting
with like, hey, like you usually start with two goals,
you're gonna lose. And I was in a counter and
be like, yeah, but then it takes something fantastic and
magical to bring this from the life for a tie,
let alone a win. But it's becomes just so par

(42:28):
for the course in a way, with just how incredible
Sandy you have actually been playing that you almost overlook that,
like yeah, like Drey is amazing, Like he's here now,
Like if you're a Minnesota and you're seeing him for
the first time and that's what he does to you.
I hate Honors Driyer, Like I can't stand this guy,
Like what are we doing under leg five million? Like

(42:49):
I would hate the country of Belgium and their waffles
because they could they let them go?

Speaker 2 (42:54):
They should just lock them down over there.

Speaker 3 (42:56):
No, he's here terrorizing MLS and uh the latest victim
was Minnesota. But yeah, no, it's great, thank you for
bringing that Golaso up once again or for the first
time actually, but incredible stuff.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
I mean, I know, I was.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
Just like, hang on, I know, if we were doing
that show on Saturday night, we would have done fifteen
minutes on the goal. But of course that maybe it
just says that we're really hard to impress. We're like
drivers over here going like hello, Loo, can you talk
about my beautiful goal? I don't know what is what

(43:31):
is accident?

Speaker 4 (43:33):
I feel like he's getting like the Many Machado treatment.
A little bit because like we kinda we expect a
lot from Tatis, and then we expect a lot for
like these other players and many Machada just posts like
every game, you know, every season, he's always up for
like thirty home runs each each season. And yeah, I
think now Dryer, we're just expecting him to score goal.

(43:56):
But yeah, this this was spectacular though. This was uh yeah,
he just took a shot. I mean, that's what I
like about Dryer. He's not afraid to take a shot,
even from midfield. And man, he he just surprised everybody.
And and then I heard also on the Looney Bin
podcast they like to call him Onders, washer and dryer.

Speaker 5 (44:21):
Okay, so yeah they yeah, yeah, they did not able.

Speaker 1 (44:28):
Yes, Minnesota nice is the term. It's not Minnesota funny.
But we're good, good on the Loons fans for trying.
We appreciate that. Okay, So let's look ahead now, because again,
by the time we come back and record, it will

(44:48):
be much fresher in our minds. Next Thursday. After next Wednesday,
the Chromatos travel north of the border to take on Vancouver.
The battle with the white Caps begins, and Alex so

(45:10):
does our journey of discovery with the Vancouver white Caps,
who nominally and I saw make their run in Champions League,
uh and so forth. But nonetheless, uh, this is a
pretty darn good team.

Speaker 4 (45:29):
Yes, they are, you know, first in the West, and
it seems like they play a very similar style to US.

Speaker 5 (45:38):
Uh, it's pretty similar formation too.

Speaker 4 (45:41):
They like the four three three kind of like US,
very high possession.

Speaker 5 (45:48):
And yeah, they're they're a really great team.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (45:53):
Brian White, he he's as double digit goals and yeah,
he he's a when it comes to double digit goal goals,
there's not that many in an MLS so far. You know,
Dryer has eight and then White and uh he's got
ten and he's in the top eight for for a

(46:15):
goal scored.

Speaker 5 (46:16):
But yeah, this this is a team that.

Speaker 4 (46:20):
When that there, you know, they're they're kind of they're
going to be similar to uh, you know Minnesota, as
in they're not going to have all their players like
that we we kind of we just saw there. It's
going to be a lot of players that haven't you know,
not really played and but you know, trying to trying

(46:42):
to let we can go back a little bit and
and start with a little bit of background.

Speaker 5 (46:47):
This Uh, this.

Speaker 4 (46:49):
Vancouver team is owned by one of the you know,
one of their leading investors is Steve Nash, NBA player,
So yeah, that's that's really cool. And one one of
his close friends is a Yahoo Chief operator, Jeff Ballot,
and he he does a lot of these investments with

(47:11):
Steve Nash that you know he wants to Now they
owned the white Caps, but back in two thousand and
eight they wanted to own They made a bid for
Tottenham Hotspur and I just always wonder like what would
have been if Steve Nash would have own the own
the Spurs? How many more trophies could have could Tottenham won? No, sorry,

(47:36):
they've won one? Well yeah, yeah, when it comes to
this team, uh, you know, just just going back to
their history, they're up in the Pacific Northwest, and there's
two other teams up there, right, there's the Seattle Sounders
that we've seen in the Portland Timbers, and their history

(47:57):
predates MLS. So we're we're and we're going way back
even before USL.

Speaker 5 (48:03):
We're going way back to.

Speaker 4 (48:04):
The NASL days of like the nineteen seventies.

Speaker 2 (48:08):
Right Craig's language right now.

Speaker 4 (48:09):
Yes, the San Diego Soccers we're back in the NASL
back then, and yeah, they.

Speaker 5 (48:16):
Play each other, you know.

Speaker 4 (48:19):
Now they play each other, you know, every year, and
they play for something called the Cascadian Cup that's amongst
the three teams in the Pacific Northwest. And then this
is then this cup has been going on since the seventies.
And my question to you guys is now that we're
a team in the MLS, we're a new team. Granted,

(48:43):
you know, we don't have the history of Vancouver, Portland
and Seattle, but you know we we do have a
rivalry between the two LA teams, you know that predates
those teams.

Speaker 5 (48:57):
You know, we've never liked to.

Speaker 4 (49:01):
But should should between the three teams or if we
want to include San Jose too, because they're they're a
California team, Should us four have some sort of cup
that you know that is you know, fan created or

(49:21):
you know, or or something like that that will really
amp up the rivalry. And you know, we could say like, yes,
we're the So Cal champions this year, or yes we're
the California champions.

Speaker 5 (49:35):
What do you guys think?

Speaker 1 (49:36):
All right, great question, I say add San Jose because
otherwise everyone will say that that's the battle for LA
Cup and San Diego, San Diego plays in that. Why
does San Diego play that? That's about Galaxy and LAFC.
That's about El Traffico. That's giving a cup to l

(49:56):
Traffico basically, and I'm not about I don't want to
be the third wheel in it. And then every once
in a while San Diego wins and people go, so
add San Jose to the mix, and it's the Golden
Bear Cup, you know, like, let's let's get a California
Cup and you're the champion of the Golden State And

(50:18):
that's amazing to me. Golden State Cup, Golden Bear Cup,
call it what you want, but I think that would
be a lot of fun and that would be one
of those pieces of silverware that if you randomly won
it a year that you didn't win something else, you'd
be pretty proud of it. So I'm a big yes

(50:39):
on the all California side of the Cup competition. Tony,
what do you think?

Speaker 2 (50:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (50:45):
I know a couple of years ago and speaking when
Loyal was actually coming in, like they were expecting Loya
to become the MLS team, and they were excited to
bring them into what they called the Califas Cup and
it was a plaque that had the Khalifa's Cup, but
it was like.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
An interstate sign.

Speaker 3 (51:03):
Of freeways that runs, you know, just just the design
of a of a freeway sign as the Khalifa's Cup
and it was like a little trophy. I'm not I
don't think they actually continued it, but there was like
a count and I think a galaxy was ahead, uh
in that one, just in championships one. But I think
that's really cool. Just to bring that back, golden Bear,
the Kalifa's Cup. If it's defunct, hey bring it back.

(51:26):
But I will let the designing for the creators that
do awesome designs.

Speaker 2 (51:31):
What would Khalifa's Cup look like? Does it have the
Golden Bear?

Speaker 5 (51:35):
I like that, Yeah, I would.

Speaker 4 (51:37):
I would think, yeah, the Battle for the Bear, yeah,
or yeah, the one oh one Cup might be something
yeah yeah, okay, well.

Speaker 5 (51:51):
Yeah, as we move along. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (51:52):
They also they're champions in their domestic cup, the Voyagers Cup,
which is just we have something something similar to that
as the US Open Cup, and they play for the
you know, the Canadian Cup, so.

Speaker 5 (52:07):
They Vancouver is actually pretty good in that one.

Speaker 4 (52:10):
But now with you know, focusing on this year, they
have a new quote coach Jasper Sarson, He's he's actually Danish,
so I think he might be someone that Understryer might know.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
He might know the secret sauce to Deny Dryer. He's like,
let me tell you this is what we did on
the frozen fields to shut down.

Speaker 2 (52:34):
He does look like he's, you know, kidnapped James Bond
a time or two.

Speaker 1 (52:37):
But you know, yes, making you scoreless.

Speaker 5 (52:46):
I could see him with like a cat, you know,
just gonna like ex yes, yes, mister Bond.

Speaker 2 (52:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (52:59):
So now that they have source and yeah, Vancouver has
changed to this top of the league team playing a
very similar as to ours. Uh when historically Vancouver has
either been a six or ninth place team in the
Western Conference, They've never really been that that good. You know,
they've finished second once, they finished third once in their

(53:24):
in their history in the Western Conference. So yeah, this
is the first thing they've actually been pretty elite, you know,
so far in the season. And now you know they're
they're going to have.

Speaker 5 (53:39):
Some of their players are out. Ali Ahmed is out
for the Gold Cup.

Speaker 4 (53:44):
Sebastian burgh Halter is going to be out, Jayden Nelson
and Brian White and you know, with Brian White out,
that's ten goals missing from your offense. And and as
we saw they played the Columbus grew last week and
and yeah, you can tell the offense was kind of
lacking there.

Speaker 1 (54:04):
And and.

Speaker 4 (54:07):
They they had some guys that you know, don't normally start.
Daniel Rios, he's a he's a guy online from uh
Walahara achieve Us. And yeah, he he was the he
was the guy playing up front. You know, he has
a modest you know, a couple of goals, two goals
who assist to his name, and you know, that's that's

(54:28):
kind of what we're going to be seeing up front.
And I think, yeah, you probably get one goal off
these guys, you could, you know, that's that might be
it for them. Uh, I just don't don't see how,
you know, what, what kind of offense can they generate?
But on on the other side to it, their their

(54:49):
goalkeeper does have a clean sheets and yeah, he's he's
also pretty good. So yeah, if we get some you know,
if we generate one two goals and kind to close
them out, I.

Speaker 5 (55:01):
Think that's going to be the recipe right there.

Speaker 1 (55:05):
Well, that's got me encouraged Tony, but I'm also, you know,
just a little bit curious. This is some big time
travel to get all the way up to BC Place.
Canada and the United States not particularly loving each other
right now. I'm sure the fan base will be rabid
and fired up in the way the club is playing

(55:25):
the other form. When you had those standings up, it
stood out to me at home six wins, two draws,
just one loss, So you know they're piling up wins
at home. They've got quality of form at home. So
the question to me is, you know, and listen, a
SDFC has as many wins as losses on the road.

(55:46):
That's quite good for an expansion side, if you know.
I'd sign up for that for any club any year,
being five hundred on the road. But I'm anticipating that
this is going to be one of those tough locations
that people don't think about, like, oh, is Vancouver a
tough place to go play. We'll find out and maybe

(56:09):
it'll turn out to be a laugher, but I don't
think it will be. I think this is going to
be a really tough spot for San DIEGOFC.

Speaker 3 (56:17):
I don't like artificial turf and I don't like the
style of SANDYGFC. The ball doesn't flow to use the
marketing for them, there you go. It just doesn't flow
us pretty on artificial turf. And I know that there's
been victories, there's been good games, there's been bad games
on synthetic grass, but just in general, that in itself

(56:38):
presents a challenge on its own that some of these
players aren't necessarily that familiar with. Yes, there are also
turf fields in Europe, I understand that, but the preferred
method for this style of play, this sport to be
played is on real grass.

Speaker 2 (56:54):
And so when you.

Speaker 3 (56:55):
Throw something like that on top of the travel, on
top of the players that are still missing, you know,
you have a great performance against Minnesota, But then can
you replicate that once again? Are these players able to
do that once again? And there's they're still young, there's
still very little footage of what how they play. So
every time that the players that won't be no goes

(57:16):
out there, verr Hoven goes out there, there's more film
for the opposing teams to study, not just for them,
but just Sandy UFC in general. So sortinsen with a
good manager like that to be able to take it
to Mikey badas. It's also that added layer of like, hey,
there's a chance that he may be out coached at
any point. There's a reason why Vancouver historically isn't in

(57:38):
the first, second place and in this in this league.
But if they have that coaching now that takes them
that next level, then you can face a tough challenge.
And every excuse is once again there for SANDYOFC to
drop points. But I will be happily surprised if they
come out with something.

Speaker 1 (57:58):
It's gonna be a good one. We'll be back on
Thursday to chat through it, to look through the highlights,
to discuss all the discussion topics that come out of it.
But what an incredible time to be a San Diego
FC fan. Everything is fresh and new. We love the coach,
we love the players. Dryer is scoring from midfield. We're

(58:20):
erasing horrible owned goals within three minutes, like three minutes,
just oh, this horrible thing that we're thinking about it,
let's just score from midfield. What happened? I forget, score
is tied. Let's play again. So and really there's that promise.
There's no history yet the oh well you know, remember

(58:41):
what happened in November when they do this or that.
It's all fresh. It's all new at San Diego FC.
A sweet summer child running on the grass, freshly cut
sunshine out, warm temperatures. Everything's beautiful. Let's see what happens
when you go up.

Speaker 5 (59:00):
To face Vancouver.

Speaker 1 (59:03):
It won't be cold though, White Caps. I mean, come on,
maybe in the distance, but it's not cold at the
end of June in British Columbia. I'm sure. I'm sure
it's lovely. Actually, it's probably quite a beautiful ball. Me me
sixty six or something like.

Speaker 3 (59:18):
That, you know, I mean, yeah, a spot on actually
in that time range.

Speaker 2 (59:25):
Let's go to the old Google machine and yeah, there.

Speaker 1 (59:32):
You go, sixty yeah, sixty four, sixty five, seventy two.
Hang on chance of rain on Wednesday, well that would suck.

Speaker 3 (59:43):
Mak that surface even more slick, make that ball actually
be able to go. I will note that San Diego
here a Snapdragon. It's a lot left to be seen
with more wave and just more.

Speaker 2 (59:55):
Football to be played on.

Speaker 3 (59:56):
But right now, the surface, from what I'm told, is
in the best condition it's been at snap Dragon Stadium,
and so that's really good. You know, got some Gold
Cup action and the grounds crew is very happy with
how the surface has maintained and has now really taken
to it, so they're holding off on the extra two
extra pitches so far somewhere in Bescondido, Carlsbad. So hey,

(01:00:21):
good domestic news for San Diego FC. Hopefully it stays
that way.

Speaker 1 (01:00:26):
Well, that's tremendous because as soon as those those football
hooligans come in and start tearing it up with their
big old cleats, they're three to twenty pounds, you know, tackles,
pushing things, then it turns into a choppy mess. So
I'm glad to hear that summer children running through the
freshly cut actually standing up snap dragon stadium grass. All right, Alex.

(01:00:52):
Closing thoughts on this week's show.

Speaker 4 (01:00:56):
I can't I can't wait for next Weekvcouver.

Speaker 5 (01:01:00):
It should be a fun match.

Speaker 4 (01:01:01):
And then I think next week correct me if I'm wrong, Tony,
are we gonna find out the all star roster too?

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
That's coming out.

Speaker 3 (01:01:10):
I was actually looking at some highlight packages of different
teams saying vote for this guy, vote for this guy, and.

Speaker 4 (01:01:16):
I think Dryer should be shoe in for that one.
Of those roster spots. I don't know if there's gonna
be any surprises. Maybe Jeff A. Turst Off maybe in there,
but uh Alki Alaski if yeah, maybe maybe he's a
he was a final write in vote.

Speaker 5 (01:01:36):
But yeah, I'm excited for.

Speaker 4 (01:01:38):
For next week and yeah, hopefully we'll we'll hear officially
that Dryer is in the All Star Game in Austin, Tony.

Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Yeah. No, I'm really excited to have SANDYFC back.

Speaker 3 (01:01:49):
You know, it was I missed it. Training, didn't happen today,
will happen tomorrow. Probably get some sound from out there.
So Sandy UFC into next week against a very good rival.
So this is what you pay for, This is what
you hope for for one and two and if it's
a San Diego team, all right, it's very nice to
see that.

Speaker 1 (01:02:09):
