Speaker 1 (00:30):
Welcome to the Chrome Maniacs.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Everybody, you're weekly looking San Diego FC and MLS. I'm
Craig Elston, joined once again by Tony Sanchez and Alex Bania.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
What's going on, Tony? How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:45):
I am doing it all right?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
A little bit more aerodynamic now, I haven't had my
hair this yeah, look at that sixth grade?

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Sixth grade?

Speaker 1 (00:56):
But what was the impetus.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
For the audio listeners?

Speaker 1 (01:01):
I'm I'm showing my bolt spot.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Come there.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Uh, it's all good, it's part of it. I did
everything I wanted with it. It's all good, kind of
going along with the age.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
But it's all right.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
It's about today. Alex.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
You're you're you're full head of hair.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
You have the best the man with the best hair
on the show.

Speaker 5 (01:19):
Yeah, I I credit that to genetics. Man. Yeah, my
family has a good head of hair themselves. And uh yeah,
it's it's a hot one here in San Diego. I'm
feeling it here in North County. And it just makes
sense because we're playing the Chicago Fire on Saturday. So

(01:39):
it just all connects, right.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Indeed it does.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Our seventh episode of The Chromaniacs. Let me start with
some very quick housekeeping. First off, follow us on Instagram.
Follow us on Instagram at the Chromaniacs.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
You can find it quite easily.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
The Chromaniacs, our friend and guest from last week, Terrible
stfc Memes, helps out some clips from the show. Keeps
you reminded when the next show's up to date. So
why not follow us. Let's make a conversation on social
media as well, at your Chromniacs. Also, if you can't,
and there we are on Spotify, please rate and review

(02:16):
the show. There we are on Instagram. Okay, almost to
two hundred and fifty followers.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Not bad. Let's quadruple. Let's get rolling. Let's get to
one k. Let's get moving.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Also, as we had mentioned last week, we said, hey,
you know, if you can't, please rate, review, comment on
the YouTube show, give us that thumbs up. There was
a comment and I absolutely took it heart on YouTube
last week saying, hey, the audio version the podcast too
many ads, they're jumping into the wrong times, making it unlistenable.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
I went, I checked myself. I said, you're right.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I had let Spreaker self populate the ads. And you
know what happens if you let AI do anything? Oh yeah,
it just it'll just messes it up. Yeah, like, don't
believe anything that they say. The robot will do.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Oh, the robot will smartly enter the No, the.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Robot will randomly enter in the middle of someone's sentence
an AD and then and drop it in.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
So what did I do?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
I dropped out the ads. I just killed the ads.
Thank you, Capital G lower G one dash seven seven seven.
I always knew I could count on you. I always
knew droids could be of use GG one seven seven seven.
That's in like Roque two, I believe is when GG

(03:37):
one seven seven seven, uh really comes to the front. Nonetheless,
thank you, And I'm going to be fastidiously manually placing
any ads that.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Go in the show from now on to make sure
that they're in good places. So thank you. We listen,
We here idiously.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
I love the the the thorus, the walking through source
that you are. Craig sometimes just hits the right note
in my ear and I just needed that word right now.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
You needed a fastidious attention to detail. That's fair, Okay,
last thing, but it's the biggest thing. The Chromaniacs is
going through a quick change.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
We had a quick show meeting about it, and we
are going to a twice a.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Week format going forward.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
So what you're gonna hear this show on Thursday's nothing
changes on YouTube. Everything discussion, topics, training, sound, preview of
the next match. But what I have found just kind
of diving into our first six episodes is that people
are keen to hear what we have to say about
a match, but once the next match is along, they're

(04:46):
not as keen. So we're going to go to a
postgame show regular show format, so we'll do two shows
a week. Each show will be a little bit shorter
as a result, and I think that makes.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
It a little bit more consumable.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
So today we're gonna barely look at Houston Dynamo and
that's the last time we'll do that. For the Chicago
Fire match, we'll have a Chromaniacs postgame show. Might not
be right after the game, it might be just depends
on all of our schedule. Stay tuned, but sometime within
a day of the game, we'll have a postgame show,
and then we'll have this as kind of the pregame

(05:22):
episode of the podcast. So two podcasts a week, twice
the fun for the Kromaniacs, and less time in each episode.
So hopefully that makes you a little happier to get
to the end of the episode as well.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Gentlemen, any comments on this momentous change.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Look, it's more soccer talk at the end of the day.
You know, I've you know, I've kind of gone around
just most of the actual soccer related shows in town
and it's always good, right, Like, I really enjoy the
fact that people are getting in to this, they want
to know more, and the nooks and crannies that I'm

(06:03):
finding and people's enjoyment of SDFC is it's crazy. Like
there's a super fans who know nothing about soccer, there's
a super fans who know everything about soccer, there's the
people who know everything about soccer that don't know anything
about MLS slash SDFC, and there's people all in between.
And so that's I think where it needs to kind

(06:25):
of now be a little bit more niche to people.
And you know what if that's where San Diego the
Chromaniacs come in and really fill in those people, like, Hey, we.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Talk ball here, because that's what we do. We talk ball.

Speaker 4 (06:37):
Alex knows ball, Craig knows ball, listeners know ball. If
you don't know ball, don't be afraid to also put
that in there because that's part of the learning, right,
Like we get a lot of people saying, hey, like
I love it when you talk about the the rule
of you know, why the wall has to be so
close or not so close, like little things like that,
Like oh, well, yeah, you know, you take those things
for granted, but it's all part of the great learning things.

(06:59):
But having a team here in MLS, everybody and everybody
is interested.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Yeah, I have to agree with you. Yeah, you're gonna
hear our postgame analysis, you know, hopefully right after the
game or maybe a day after the game, and you
get to hear our direct thoughts on what happened. And
I think that's very exciting. I know people want to
hear that type of analysis right after the game. So, yeah,

(07:27):
you get to hear more content from us, and yeah,
we'll have more to say. We'll have more games to
talk about because we're in July and the tournament I've
been talking about is going to happen pretty soon and
Leak's Cup is coming up, and that's just going to
give us more things to talk about.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, the summer of soccer is underway, and I just
remember being in the Purple Lot last weekend, and people
saying to me, like, you know, I'm so excited for
the match, but I'm also so excited to hear what
you guys have to say about the match. That's part
of the fun of it. And I'm like, well, cool,
wait five days and we'll let you know. Now, let's
bring it to the people. Let's give the people what

(08:07):
they want. So moving forward, we're splitting the show in two.
We're going to have a post scheme show and we're
gonna have this midweek. Oh wait, we can't call it that.
Although I mean, Tony's familiar, Tony, You're the village bicycle.
Everybody has a ride.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Everybody. Well, I mean, it's all good, and it's free.
Uh still still free, guys. But again it's it's still
fun and and and really I was talking to you
guys about just how SDFC has really come around and
in the lexicon and the zeitgeist.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
It just San Diego and.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
There were a good handful of SDFC merchandise related stuff
at the fair on the fourth of July.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
So you know, that's a good barometer for me.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Uh, it's something that's very consistent for me, just I
did the same thing with Loyal with with San Diego
Wave and now with SDFC.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
And you start seeing the jerseys. You start seeing.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
I saw a shop you know sells the mascot as,
the masks and stuff, and you know they may not
have the most authentic jerseys.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
I saw my first non authentic STFC jersey.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Hey that was now big till your bootleg.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
No, it was good, but hey, we're here to talk soccer.
Anybody who wants it out almost on the chroman X.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
All right, let's get it rolling then and get into
our discussion topics. And like I said, because this is
the departure from the once a week format, we haven't
talked about Houston Dynamo, Uh, four to three, comeback win,
come from ahead, come from behind. That it's such a
frustrating match, such an exciting match, you know, SDFC conceding,

(09:57):
falling behind two to one, back to three to two,
then the another tragic passback blunder leads to both injury
and penalty and tie, and then the shocking seventeen minute
uh stoppage time announcement. Oh my god, Like the whole

(10:20):
crowd went like what yeah, collective what.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Like what number seventeen substituting for who right, Yeah, exactly
seventeen in who out?

Speaker 1 (10:31):
I didn't see who went out No.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Seventeen in to the match, and of course Houston needed
ten of those to expose the San Diego FC back line. So,
top line thoughts, having crystallized from five days in the past,
what are your thoughts on what you saw on Saturday night?

Speaker 5 (10:50):
It was good. I mean, it was still what we
expect out of this team. Usually, when you score three goals,
you should be coming out with three points. It just
wasn't the case this time. Houston, I think caught everybody
by surprise just by their style of play. It caught me.

(11:12):
We talked about this last week and I had an
idea of what we were going to see, and it
completely through that out the window. And they they were
prepared to give us a new look, new Houston Dynamo look,
with their uh with their high press. They're countering was

(11:33):
pretty good and they just brought speed, I think, and
that that's kind of what a little bit of our
weakness there in the back line. We just couldn't catch
up to them. And and then I think with that,
towards the tail end of the of the match was
when we saw that impact. They were simply just tired

(11:55):
and a little worn out and that and that seventeen minutes.
When I saw it, I was like, man, that that's
just too much time, especially for this team. I'm I'm
a little bit tired legs. They just yeah, they just
seem like that that was gonna be too much time
for Dynamo, and they took advantage and they got the

(12:16):
three points.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
You know, Tony, you just played for the YouTube viewers
the goal for one to one after San Diego had
taken the one nothing lead. And I look at that goal,
and I look at the fourth goal as the back
line getting exposed by speed, by by long balls, through balls,
one aerial, one on the ground, but essentially getting caught

(12:38):
in a high line, unable to recover in time to
get the job right there, get the get the half step,
everybody's behind. Next thing, you know, you've got a goal.
Second goal was a golosso yeah, the third.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
The third goal was a mistake on a pass bag.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
So I can really look at three goals out of
the four and say, okay, here's an issue that the
back line needs to address, as this exposed maybe a
longer term issue for SDFC.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
I want to say that this was a typical SANDIGUEFC performance.
You usually see Sandy UFC win this game, but Houston
was a little bit more clinical than any of the
other teams that they have faced, and they actually took
advantage of what San DIEGOFC was giving them. How many
times have we seen SANDYFC almost almost blunder it in
the back but CJ cleans it up.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
How many times have we seen, you know.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
The back line get exposed but they miss wide and
you don't think about those moments and then San Diego
FC is offense able to pile on. San DIEGOFC had
a typical SANDIYOFC match. They controlled the game, they control
the temple. They were great on offense. Was the thing
that we had been asking for Milan Dreyer Tuky. It
happened and it worked. But in the midfield and the
defensive end, that's where you can definitely start seeing maybe

(13:58):
those tired legs and the fact that this team still
isn't deep.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
There still isn't that depth there.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Albrado is, I can I can feel in the stadium
the moment where I'm like that's out about the spot
around the seventies.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Something's men.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
I'm like, that's where he needs to be because then
he takes that bundle of energy through the midfield and
really locks it down when he needs to, but he
can move forward that and then you also miss Luca.
Those were the two players that I definitely saw in
this game be missing. You look at Patty McNair. He
couldn't go for a full ninety because he's recovering from
from his injury. To Ian Pilcher get gets thrown in there,

(14:34):
hasn't really had the experience of getting thrown in the
middle of a game. He knows how to ramp it
up adjust. He still makes a couple of mistakes when
he starts, but then he adjusts in the game. He
had a moment to make the mistakes, but not enough
time to adjust. So these things piled up and any
other times, Craig, I mean you mentioned it right, San Diego,
even despite their shortcomings at times, they still aren't able

(14:56):
to win in these situations.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
This just happened to not be the one where they
did that. Yeah, it was frustrating, to be sure.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
When you saw three two, you thought, wow, what a
classic MLS goofy match, five goals scored.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
You know, the offense of this league.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
You know, it's the kind of thing that the European
fans kind of look at us a scance and say, oh,
come on you guys, Yeah three two, how cute, that's fun.
Oh did MESSI score a brace again? Okay, you know,
like I get it. But the three three man that
was just such a letdown. And I got to say
from the supporter section, it was confusing as well because

(15:36):
it happened all the way across the field and there
was just the injury stoppage for the longest time, and
then they got up and there was a penalty.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
It was like, wait, what the hell happened?

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Well, what happened was really second straight match, a mistake,
a pass back error, improperly weighted focus issue, perhaps pressure issue, certainly,
but it's something that's got to tighten up, boys, because
you can't keep having these moments. These are gifts to

(16:11):
the opposing team. And last time SDFC overcame it.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
This time they didn't.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
What's happening too is people are and teams are scouting
the fact that Sandy UFC is willing to go for
the risky pass back and they trust CJ to get
it out in a tight spot. So whenever that's scouted,
usually teams say, oh, they.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Would never pass it to the goalkeeper.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
The book doesn't say go pass back to the goalkeeper,
but for sdfc's book, that's what they have to do.
So now the anticipation's coming up a little earlier, where yeah,
these passes are broken, but they've been broken the whole time,
but there's not somebody they're ready to pounce on it
as quickly. These are things that people are and other
teams are starting to pick up, and I think that's

(16:52):
going to be an achilles here for Sandy UFC unless
they start cleaning it up quickly.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
And I have a question for you guys, like, how
do you rank like CJ. DeSanto's performance in this match?
Because I think I was like looking around and kind
of seeing out the comments seeing at different social media
and it felt like he was getting a lot of
blame for what was going on in the breakdowns and
I don't see it, but yeah, do you what did

(17:21):
you guys see?

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Well, I can't speak to the communication situation. That's the
type of thing that probably Tony would hear about out
of the training grounds, you know, somewhere along the way.
When I look at it from a very clinical just
break it down standpoint, I'd look at the four goals
and say which one was CJ Jo Santos's fault? You know,
I mean the first that we saw, that's a ball

(17:45):
over the top where the STFC defense gets beat. Now
it's one v one and the keeper. That's advantage to
the player. He's coming down the middle of the field.
If he hits his net, he's going to score most
of the time. Goal number two was a complete glazo,
a screened a cut pat you know, cutback, move right,
look at this.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
And stuck its side netting.

Speaker 5 (18:05):
It was from front too, Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
It was that. It was the cutback into the middle
to free the right foot.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Do Santos can't do anything about that, He's defenseless to
the situation. The third we've discussed. You know, it's a penalty,
it's a mistake, it's an error. Yeah, it's an angry
goalkeeper over there. And honestly the fourth was clinical as well.
A quick through.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
Bowl and you know that that.

Speaker 2 (18:34):
Deft touch outside of the foot side of the you know,
inside the back post keepers defenseless. So I don't see it.
I don't see the dos Santo's criticism on these goals conceded.

Speaker 4 (18:47):
If you're upset at Dolsanto's, then should be equally as
upset with every other performance he's had, because this is
a typical performance from Dosantos. He had good stops, he
had good good, good looks, he had a brave opportunities. Yeah,
he gave up a penalty, not the first penalty he
gives up there. There have been other other situations where,
if I remember correctly, he handled the ball, walked out.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
Of the of the the.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
Area, dropped it and said, oh no that was That's
what again? That's highlight for me for STFC getting away
with that one. But no, this is a typical performance
from everybody, including CJ. And then you know, if you
want a nip pick, sure, positioning could have been better
on this shot.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
You know you a little too close to the right,
But what's the player doing there?

Speaker 3 (19:29):
To begin with? Where's the pressure? Where was the midfield?

Speaker 4 (19:32):
Whenever they let him walk into the last final third
like he can yell all he wants, nobody's stepping up.
So I will defend a goalkeeper through and through every
single day. And I don't think not yet, CJ is
not a to blame for this. And I think it
has a lot to do with what Mikey said for postgame.
Mikey was not happy. I'll say that nobody was happy postmatch,

(19:53):
and I think they all realized that they were served.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
A big serving of humble pie.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
And and I think that STFC needed it, and not
in terms of like they were being pompous saying bab bah,
but no, I just think that if you're going to
go ahead and have a reset and get punched in
the mid those I think it's better now than the
last month going into playoffs and then you go into
a rut. This is where you still have time to adjust.

(20:21):
It's time that you have time to add pieces. You're
starting to see who you have, You're starting to live
in a world without about auto like again, like these
are realities that Sandy UFC wasn't dealing with last week
or the week before, but now they are.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Well and you just kind of led me perfectly into
the next thing I wanted to get to before we
get to the match preview against Chicago Fire. Today we
are recording July tenth. July twenty fourth, two weeks from today,
the transfer window opens. So you know, originally I was thinking, well, hey,

(20:56):
what are the biggest needs for SDFC, But we can
table that. I want to start with one one stuff here,
like what is the transfer window? What can SDFC do,
how long do they have to do it, what's the
money situation, what's the camp situation? Alex return our lonely
eyes to you.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
Isn't it exciting that we get to talk about a
transfer window for our first division team? Like I'm excited
about it. This is the first time, you know, we
actually have to have these conversations. And yeah, the SO
and MLS and mostlyaues, they have like two transfer windows
and the first one close back a few months ago. Tony,

(21:42):
you can remind me when when that.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
Closed April twenty third.

Speaker 5 (21:46):
Twenty third, Yeah, that's right, and then the next one
will open on July twenty fourth. It's a month long
window until August twenty one, and with that it's pretty
much trade deadline, you know, your prototypical trade deadline that
you've seen normal North American sports, right, NFL and NBA, MLB.

(22:13):
This is your window to make a transaction to make
an addition to your team. We've all we've already seen
some subtractions in La f C. They got rid of Oliviersherud.
They he wasn't having a good time in La so
he was shipped out back to France. So subtractions can

(22:35):
be made prior to this window. But this is when
additions can be officially made. I know deals have been
talked about, they can't be made official until July twenty fourth.
That's when you can finally have them officially on your roster.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
Okay, now we know that SDFC still has the opportunity
to engage a third designated players spot. They could also
choose not to do that and stay in the quote
unquote under twenty two path that gives them more flexibility
with their youth setup. But outside of that, within the

(23:16):
MLS cap structure you put in our rundown, they've got
about four million.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
Dollars that they could utilize.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
And that is separate and apart from if they you know,
the old de Bruyno rumors, which I think are I mean,
obviously they're dead and gone, but like you know, whoever
the next person is that people want to throw international
flight of fancy upon it would be separate and apart
from that.

Speaker 5 (23:40):
Yeah, I think that's what I last heard when when
I was looking at the roster kind of rundown was
just about four million. Oh we got a little bit
more there you go, five million leftover on the cap.
And then there's also TAM which can you know, buy
down the contract if needed, And that's always a mystery.

(24:05):
That's not like an exact number that you don't know
how much has been added or subtracted. You just kind
of you just kind of go with it. There. There's
no roster resource here for MLS. I wish there was.
I really wish there was like some sort of uh
AS resource there. But yeah, we we do have some
money to blow. That's the that's the thing, and it's

(24:29):
whether or not. The only thing that I was looking into,
and I think you can help me out, Tony, is
that they don't have any international slots for Sandy UFC.
So you you're given a certain number of international slots
and I think we traded the last one away. I

(24:52):
think that was for Luca.

Speaker 4 (24:54):
Yeah, and I think that's you know, a smart invest
soon with that option to to to buy and I
think now you're just going to start to see these
options being taken for all the loan players, because remind people,
right this roster is thin already, but it's riddled with
loans in very important spots.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Luca lore is a loan player.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
You have Milalilowski, who's who's out here on loan. Luca Bombino,
as you mentioned, still technically on loan. So take those
three players away, and I don't know where San Diego
FC is to be halfway through the season, but that's
not the reality that we live in. There is a

(25:38):
push to potentially make uh, you know, somebody like al
Delore a DP player as well.

Speaker 3 (25:45):
However, a he's a domestic player.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
So there's all you're playing Monopoly with Monopoly money and
real money, and then you're playing it with Monopoly bucks
from McDonald's and then hey, there's an extra couple of
Connect four pieces. Those are worth something here mls, let's
go ahead and use these. And this is kind of
the mishmash for the construction. So all in als to

(26:09):
say that Tyler Heaps is incredibly busy right now and
the need, especially with the news that came down you
you were mentioning Alex addition and subtraction. Subtraction for SANDYFC
is not that one. It's this one.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
Yeah, Bruceth sent out.

Speaker 2 (26:28):
Yeah, we hardly knew yee.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
And I was even in.

Speaker 4 (26:34):
This last year Sea, I was like, man, somebody in
the midfield, like Bruce Saith, where is he? Like he
could have maybe done some good in the midfield, you know, done,
he looked alright against America. But overall, I think that
the need is going to have to be in the
midfield for San Diego FC. And this is something that
cannot continue because it's unsustainable. But again, who is the

(26:57):
person who's that voice and who's that energy they're going
to bring into this locker room? Because through and through
the energy in the locker room, the vibes are still positive.
And from what I've understood of what happened with our
buddy Andrees and not how actually detrimental he was to
that locker room, it's going to be incredibly important to
see who's going to be added here.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
Yeah, and just to add on on top of the
Luca uh Delatore uh his uh his club that I
loaned him out south of Bigo. Yeah he uh. They're
actually looking at Diego Luna uh to kind of fill
in there in in their midfield. So maybe you know,

(27:41):
they bring in Diego Luna Luca DELATOI becomes a permanent
player for c UFC. I think that's kind of how
it might work out there. And uh yeah, it was
interesting to see the reset news because yeah, we do
have a need in midfield and he could have filled it,

(28:03):
but it kind of seems like he's lower in the
pecking order for for for any spot, uh any any
anything there because you can also use Laffelson in the midfield.
You can try to get creative and use some other guys.
But uh good. I think that that's the thing with
when whenever I see I Pilcher play, he needs a

(28:26):
second team, like he needs like a SDFC two or
some sort of developmental team to to get the minutes
because doing it now is not really helping them, because
I've seen it too many times with Pilcher where he
just it just doesn't seem like this is like the
best fit for him and and maybe for Bruce out

(28:47):
it's just giving him some time somewhere else so he
can get those minutes and develop as a player. So yeah,
we we we definitely haven't and need a midfield I'm
I'm pretty much looking. You asked us a month ago, Craig, like,
what what are kind of like on our wish list,
and I said striker. I think Brekers covered now. I'm

(29:10):
pretty happy with them, Alan and Lawsky. I like the
depth behind that. If you know in Bartson's there, we
have our winger depth. I think it's I think the
front line is covered. I'm still looking at at you know,
center back. That's going to be you really need some

(29:32):
a third person there to kind of cover minutes, especially
with the League's Cup coming up and then playoffs. We
really want to have some good depth there. That's probably
not going to be you know, Ian Pilcher moving forward.
You really want to get that that role and get

(29:53):
that depth in here, and hopefully as soon as July
twenty fourth.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
Well, I agree, that would be my pick, as well
as somebody to bolster the back line.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
Where's our Naomi Gurma? We just need thread.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
We need our Gurma. I don't think she's eligible, but
we need our Gurma. Okay, we're transitioning to our SDFC
at Chicago Fire preview in lieu of Voice of the
supporters this week. I just wanted to give you voice
of a supporter me and in short of a very
quick share a quick story about a trip to eighteen

(30:30):
Threads today because I went to eighteen threads first time
I had gone to eighteen Threads. I went because I
had never picked up my you know, founding member season supporter.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
So I got that a nice scarf, and it's nice
to have that scarf. This is founding member.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
You can only get that if you are you know,
or if you sold it on eBay or something. I mean,
but you know, So I'm happy to have that. And
I was like, cool, and maybe I'll pick up some
SDFC merchant. In particular, I was looking for a blanket
that I could use as a backdrop for this little
podcast that we're doing called Chromaniacs. So went through eighteen Threads,

(31:11):
went through every corner of eighteen threads. They had one blanket.
It was all bowled up and it didn't look like
the right color for me at all, So I didn't
even really put it on the radar. They didn't have
anything else that would help me. Boy was I disappointed
in the store.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
I really was.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
And I'm not doing this to dis SDFC just we've
always promised. On his commentary on this show, I'm very happy.
You can get a Malanulaski jersey. It's right there on
the wall next to Annibalgadoy and Luca, you know, and
like that's cool. You can get in away jersey, that's
right there. None of the Earth Day or specialty jerseys
were available. Okay, they've sold out. That's fine.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Well let me take a look at the other merch.
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
There was very little selection from the Adida's way, you know,
like you, for example, couldn't get memes or in chat
if you wanted it, it wasn't there. I was looking
for a different hat. The only hat I've got is
this one. It was a giveaway hat. I settled on
a hat I wanted and then I opened it up.

Speaker 1 (32:19):
It was eighty.

Speaker 6 (32:19):
Dollars for a hat or bleeping hat, like I'm sorry,
T shirts forty five dollars.

Speaker 1 (32:29):
So why would I buy a letterman check? That was
the other thing.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
It was just like there's some stuff that's good, but
like would only be good like December to March. It
was almost like the SDFC merch folks got ahead on
the switching to the winter schedule program and they were like,
you know, here's hockey sweaters. The hockey sweater, I'd seen
that multiple times. I'm like, that's pretty cool, way too
hot to wear right now.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
They didn't have it. They had something that was I
guess cut for girls.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
Where it was like the sleeves were way longer than
your arms, but then like the cut is up the
middle of your belly, and like what what?

Speaker 1 (33:07):
So long story short.

Speaker 2 (33:09):
I looked around the place I couldn't find one thing
I wanted to buy. And that's me me talking mister
both SDFC and mister Impulse shopper a lot of times
one hundred and thirty two fifty dollars for a T
shirt for a T shirt.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
It's a T shirt fifty dollars for a T shirt.
So so the.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
Coda of the story is my pug, My blessed pug.
Sammy has a terrible habit of pulling undergarments from the
various laundry hampers and chewing them into oblivion. And he's
destroyed many, many of my socks. And yesterday I saw
another pair of destroyed socks. So I was like, I'm

(33:51):
gonna go into Target, which is right there in the
Westfield shopping town. I'm gonna go into Target and get
some socks. And guess what was right next to the.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
Sock an SDFC stand.

Speaker 2 (34:04):
It had twenty dollars T shirts that actually looked good
like the thing. Again, I'm not you know, ask if
they're doing their thing. God bless them. Make all the
money you want. But it really reminded me of going
into a restaurant and saying like, Hi, yes, I'd like
to order the burger, and they say, yes, the burger
seventy one dollars.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
You go? What the you go? Well, don't you understand
the breadstick please? This is wagyu.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
Beef that has been brought directly from Japan. We have
slivered and pickled this.

Speaker 5 (34:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
Yeah, the gold truffle is on there, and we've we've
imported the oil from Italy that we used to cook
the burger in.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
And like, dude, I just want a burger. I don't
I don't care seventy one buck.

Speaker 2 (34:50):
I just want the burger. Just give me a tasty burger. Well,
guess who did have the exact blanket I needed?

Speaker 1 (34:57):
Target? Thirty bucks?

Speaker 3 (35:00):
Hell yeah, all right?

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Like and I got the socks too. Hell of a trip.
Hell of a trip.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Say, what do you want about Target? Your your your
your milage may vary, your politics may vary. But I'm
just saying, if you want to get STFC stuff, Costco, Target, Walmarts,
Walmart has Walmart, Like there's the artisanal merch with the
truffle oil and the weirdly cut sleeves, and then there's

(35:32):
like the regular stuff for us for like twenty and
thirty bucks that if you don't visit the team store, so.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
One man's experience.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
I have to agree, Like, that's you know, if it's
your price, raise go for it. I'm not here to
tell anybody how to spend their money or not. But
in in doing the line of work I do and
just working with families, communities and and and children, like,
you start to see all these people develop their heroes
or sports heroes. Right when somebody went up to bat

(36:04):
in the nineties and they put their hat backwards, I'm
Ken Griffy Junior like, oh great, well guess what I'm
so and so pitching to Ken Griffy Junior in that moment.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Now that's happening.

Speaker 4 (36:13):
Now kids are going and are posing and Hey, I'm Milanielski.
Hey I'm CHUCKI Losano. Hey I'm Honors Dryer. Right now,
think about that parent that has to spend money on
everything already for school, all the clothes, uniform, and then
you're asking to on top of that by an authentic
jersey because you know, you know you're you're a parent

(36:33):
who has me.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
But still it adds up.

Speaker 4 (36:35):
But it's getting priced out of potential fan bases and
people who want to go ahead and make memories with
you forever. So I've always been the person who says,
you know what, if you give somebody a free SDFC hat,
they're gonna wear that hat until they don't until they
wear it down, until there's nothing to work. But they'll
wear it even if they don't know what it is.

(36:57):
I know so many people somebody's let knows that just
do that that.

Speaker 3 (37:00):
Like, hey, is it is?

Speaker 5 (37:01):
It?

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Is it?

Speaker 3 (37:01):
I guess that a chick is almos? Somebody give it
to me?

Speaker 4 (37:05):
Oh okay, cool, Well now you're just free advertising for
I don't know, Soapy Joe's car wash, which I have
beef with.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
I'll table that.

Speaker 5 (37:16):
Yeah, yeah, I get the Dick Sporting good stuff. Target stuff. Yeah,
it's it's in my price right, and so that's that's
what I go with too.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
Again, nothing against the club.

Speaker 2 (37:28):
Make all you make, the artisanal sleeve, you know, stuff,
make the things, do the things, you know, the collaborate,
the collaborations with local artists and whatnot.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Cool.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
Some of it was just not for me, but that
doesn't mean it's not for you. You know that the
the San Diego FC hat that looks like it has
like pineapples woven into it or I don't know.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
It was some sort of fruit or vegetable or it
was I don't even know. Yeah, it's the coppy.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Yeah, I don't look like a pineapple to me. Bro
I kept staring at it. I mean, you know, it's
kind of like when you go into the louver, like, yeah,
what are all these little things? Should Sandygo FC get overgrown?
Is this like the dystopian STFC? And like the the.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Natures is reclaiming the logo along the.

Speaker 5 (38:19):
Way the floral baseball cap. There you go.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Okay, I don't know, the left one looked like a
pineapple to me, but anyways, hey, maybe.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
People should listen more and if you're engaging you maybe
you should ask the club, Hey, you should give to
giveaways through the Coromaniacs.

Speaker 1 (38:35):
How about that?

Speaker 2 (38:36):
There you go, there you go, I'll give that hat away. Yeah,
if you give it to me, I'll definitely give it away.
I mean, look, I mean, i'll I'm saying it is
it's a it's a it's a great store, great folks,
and I hope you enjoy it, but I'll be uh,
I'll be checking the middle aisles at targeting.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
Go uh the next time.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
All right, let's get to STFC and Chicago Fire and
we Skywalker and Darth Vader doing battle.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
Catwalk.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Right, we got Greg burr Halter against mikey varas soon
you will find out.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
What do you think?

Speaker 5 (39:14):
Oh? Man, I feel like Memes is getting that prepared
for us right now. The Skywalker. Yeah, that's gonna be.
That's gonna be. That's that's what I'm going with. It's
it's burr Halter as far as it's they are rejoined
once again, right, and man, it's I just wonder, like,

(39:35):
who knows more about the other, right is it Burholtzer?

Speaker 1 (39:39):
Like great question?

Speaker 5 (39:41):
You know, he he's the guy, he was the head coach,
he you know. And then mikey Varas was in the
system too, coaching up the under twenties, came up, was
the assistant took over for Burr Halter, and I, yeah,
I I just want to know who knows more, Who's
who's gonna you know, get one over the other. That

(40:02):
that that's going to be that That's pretty much the
preview right there, because what what Uh they know the style, right,
they know what each other is going to bring. It's
pretty much almost going to be identical the the four
three three and they they kind of like like the

(40:23):
the same same type of ball, you know, Uh, both
want to have possession. Chicago is a little bit less
than what what San Diego does. They're there, Uh Chicago's
around fifty, but you know they want to be on
the front what they want to be scoring goals and

(40:43):
and and for them, you know it, they just haven't
found the same success as San Diego FC. And I
think what what's what's going to be key is like
the guys on the front line. Uh, that's that's definitely
going to be key for for you each for each team.
And uh, as we talk about Chicago, they just played

(41:07):
a match on Tuesday. It's kind of good that we're
You know, I think I would have liked to be
invited to play in the US Open Cup. It should
be open to all teams. But it gives us a
little bit extra s right now. Uh, they just played
a match that went to the two extra time. They
saw our friends up north are Minnesota friends, and Yaboa

(41:33):
scored two goals against them, got the got the the
go ahead goals and came up with the win. Minnesota
United defeat Chicago and no more US Open Cup for Chicago.
So now they have us to focus on. So I
just wonder like, who's going to be fit for this one?

(41:55):
Who's going to be at full strength? I think advantage
is going to be cnda go and you know with that, Uh,
it's gonna be interesting to see. Uh, there there are
two guys up front. Uh, this is gonna be a
little a little tough to say. Fill up the zincer
went Nagel and zinc Nagle, Yes, and Hugo Kipers. I'm

(42:23):
gonna go with Kuipers, Okay they they Yeah, they are
combined for twenty goals together. And it's yeah, they're gonna
be up front for for Chicago Fire. And yeah, I'm
I'm excited to see this morning. We don't normally see
teams from the Eastern Conference, so this is, uh, this

(42:45):
is gonna be a good, good, good battle here and
uh yeah, I can't wait for this one.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Classic yeah, attorney if they always say, I was just
gonna to lead into you by saying it, as everyone
in MLS always says, if you don't draw MESSI in
the East West draw, at least you get zinchernakel.

Speaker 4 (43:05):
Yeah, no, one hundred percent and going in the with
the complicated names on that squad, right, like talk to
me about Chicago Fire. There's two names to pop up,
at least for me in knowing soccer and the global
scale kind of quote Demo Blanco, because that's where quote
Demo Blanco, the Mexican legend played and absolutely tore MLS apart,
scored one of the greatest goals in MLS history. And

(43:29):
another one that's kind of the opposite, which is more
of the MLS side of things, of the retirement at
least in Bostia and Swansteiger, the center midfield, the German
center midfield from Bayern Munich who came over and didn't
do that well, right, And so that's my experience with
the Chicago team. It's interesting that you mentioned that the
coaching is going to be the matchup to watch, right

(43:51):
because mikey batis actually a training just had a that's
the first thing he said, if you don't mind, also
just throw to him, or some things that he said
at train today where he did also say hey, honeywell
is coming in. He's still getting match fit, getting together
and getting his legs underneath. After a long Panama stint
in the Gold Cup, Lare came back this Monday. He's

(44:13):
now coming and assimilating with the team. That big brother
vibe that comes in is like, hey, we missed you
so again.

Speaker 3 (44:20):
Vibes are high. But this is what Mike Abatas had
to say about Chicago.

Speaker 5 (44:25):
Really well coached team.

Speaker 7 (44:27):
So obviously I've experienced working with Greg, tremendous respect for him,
fantastic values as a person, family guy who knows how
to instill a culture, and a really clear game model.
So they'll be well organized, they'll be well trained, they'll
have their ideas really clear. And then the second thing
is I think their front four are as explosive as

(44:49):
any in the league. So in transitions we're gonna have
to be really sharp.

Speaker 5 (44:54):
Have y'all gotten used to these four?

Speaker 7 (44:58):
I think that's a better question for the because you know,
fortunately for me, it's a lot less physically demanding to
get up and coach on the sideline. But I think
it is what it is. I don't know what I what.
I don't know if you ever get used to it.
But what I do know is we have a belief
that it's not a deterrent to giving yourself a chance

(45:19):
of winning. We know that you can put a road
performance with your preparation, your routines, and your mentality that
can help you gain three points on the road.

Speaker 1 (45:31):
Yeah and stuff.

Speaker 4 (45:32):
Yeah, Mike, you bought us there better haircut than I have,
So we'll we'll share notes next time I see him,
hopefully after a victory, because it is the first time
I experienced mikey Vadas at the Houston one with just like.

Speaker 3 (45:48):
No in person.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
I've seen him through a screen, which is I.

Speaker 4 (45:53):
Don't want to be here, but in person it's it's different,
and he's usually bubbly, but hey, uh, he knows it.

Speaker 3 (45:58):
It's a matchup of the minds against Chicago.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
Yeah, you heard so much respect there for Greg Burrhalter,
and you would expect that from Mikey Varies, to be sure.

Speaker 1 (46:09):
One thing that I kind of noted is that Chicago.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
Fire plays at Soldier Field. They play in the Bears
NFL Stadium. That means it's got the giant third deck
that's going to be completely empty. You know, no matter
how many people are there, it's going to feel like
not many people are there. I mean, unless they have
forty thousand people there, you know, but if they have

(46:31):
twenty or fifteen, it's going to feel like nobody's there.
And the Fire have won their last home match, but
before that they were one, three and four at home.
So even with their latest win, they have two wins,
three losses, four draws at home, combining with just getting

(46:53):
eliminated from US Open Cup.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
I feel like this one is.

Speaker 2 (47:01):
Trending three two guys, you know, I feel like this
could be another three two type match, and you're hoping
that SDFC gets the three I do.

Speaker 3 (47:13):
Think, so go for it, Alex.

Speaker 5 (47:16):
Yeah. Not the best home team, they're they're better on
away than they are at home, and it kind of
seems like we can have that that advantage there. They
also played Tuesday night and it just seems like we're
and we played pretty good on the road too. There's

(47:37):
a lot of good things here that that signal is like, yes,
we can pick up three points here in Chicago, and
you know, all we have to do is play play
our game and and we you know, we should be
able to be able to beat them.

Speaker 4 (47:52):
This is interesting because I can see a game that
can lead to a skid unfortunately for San DIEGOFC and
potentially canntinue just kind of them going through a rough patch.
They should definitely still be Chicago Fire ten out of
ten times, but nine out of ten times I should
have beat Houston. And again it can be a circumstantial match,

(48:15):
but these are things and games that can definitely provide
a slippery slope and a detour into that. But again,
this is the time to find these things out. Whether
or not it happens against Chicago, not sure.

Speaker 3 (48:27):
Greg.

Speaker 2 (48:29):
You know, I really like what you're saying there, and
I'll back it up with just my own experience working
in team sports for decades that sometimes you get into
a situation when a team is shorthanded, when they're missing
key players, and they get on a roll and.

Speaker 1 (48:44):
Everybody feels like they've clicked into the exact right slot
and they're just going.

Speaker 2 (48:49):
They're going, and then it's like, hey, we're going, and
then we're gonna get X, Y and Z back.

Speaker 1 (48:56):
How good are we gonna be? Then?

Speaker 2 (48:59):
In the answer sometimes is not as good because you
had something rolling and now somebody who had just stepped
into a role that they really liked has to step
back just a little bit, and now they have a
little less they're a little less sure in terms of
what they're going to be doing out there, and the
new guy who's coming in is a little less connected,
and so maybe he's of a different mind in terms

(49:21):
of which way the one two pass is gonna go.

Speaker 1 (49:23):
And he's faking left.

Speaker 2 (49:24):
Going right, and the other guy winds up going left,
and then the ball gets rolled to the other team
and you go, ah, we'll get.

Speaker 1 (49:29):
It next time. And I've seen that so many.

Speaker 2 (49:32):
Times where it's like, holy cow, you're doing it without
star star comes back. Wait a second, why didn't we
score two more goals? We got our star back? Well,
it's not just about the stars, it's about everything else.
You know that a club does their connectedness, their togetherness,
And we shall see last thing I would like to

(49:52):
say is wtf the Chicago logo. I remember the last
one was super unpopular, but this one, what I honestly
I looked at it, I thought, is that Columbus? Is
that Calgary? Wait, it's Chicago. There's a ce But then

(50:13):
there's a red star in the middle. So that's the
Chicago Red Stars. Right, it's not the red stars?

Speaker 1 (50:22):
No? What is that?

Speaker 5 (50:24):
What?

Speaker 1 (50:25):
What is fire? How? How is that fire?

Speaker 5 (50:32):
Yeah? Didn't they have like the fire.

Speaker 1 (50:35):
Department?

Speaker 5 (50:36):
Yeah yeah, that's yeah. They went from that to this right,
go back to the fire department.

Speaker 3 (50:43):
Yeah, I believe it was right here.

Speaker 1 (50:47):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean that's that.

Speaker 5 (50:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (50:52):
I like that.

Speaker 5 (50:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (50:56):
Now now now it's way way, way, way, way worse
the Chicago blue circle.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
But we've got a red star and this, of course,
I'm sure they've got some you know color mark thing.

Speaker 1 (51:08):
The redtar indicates when you know, the star of Oriyan
is above the lake, Chicago's lake, And I don't know.

Speaker 4 (51:18):
I do believe it has to do something with the ship,
like it's the flag of Chicago, because like this is
seeing punk's attire. The wrestler from Chicago famously from Chicago
and this is that's like the Blackhawks Sea Yeah, but
like it's the Stars and like I'm not sure if
there's a chic Oh man, I'm getting in trouble. Chicane

(51:39):
in Chicago, Chicago, chick Chicago and Chicago and Chicago. Okay, yeah,
if there's chicagoan around again. This is what with the
chromatics actually been able to yield to through the week.

Speaker 3 (51:52):
I got somebody who was at the.

Speaker 4 (51:54):
FC Dallas SDFC match and then yeah, I took some
heat for that.

Speaker 2 (51:57):
I accept that, which is fine. I was a little provincial.
I was a little provincial with what I said. They're
they're renovating the stadium, da, maybe next time, don't set up.

Speaker 1 (52:07):
The stadium more.

Speaker 2 (52:08):
Half of the field is leads for everyone to get burns,
you know, from from the seat and from the sun.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
So maybe maybe do that better next time.

Speaker 3 (52:17):
But as they open that other half, it's all good.

Speaker 4 (52:18):
They would have had twelve thousand instead of eleven thousand, so.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Everyone's doing the best they can.

Speaker 5 (52:26):
Yeah, I gotta ask, is Chicago fire a top five
m last.

Speaker 3 (52:31):
Name in terms of going along with the city? I guess.

Speaker 4 (52:35):
Pointing out one of the greatest tragedies in that city's history.

Speaker 2 (52:39):
Like okay, Missus O'Leary's cow the mascot, is it just
stumbling along kicking over lanterns.

Speaker 5 (52:47):
Throughout the mat The MLS is interesting because like you
have those like you know, Chicago Fire, San Jose earthquake
type names, and then it's like Sandy, UFC LAFC, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (52:58):
That's fair, and then it's like top five just for trying, right, Yeah,
it's like they get a just for not being f
C this or FC that.

Speaker 5 (53:06):
Yeah, what what's a good MLS name? And then why
didn't anyone else follow that?

Speaker 3 (53:11):
I mean, there were the Wizards for a while in
the middle of the country.

Speaker 8 (53:17):
Not sure how yeah, yeah, yeah, like the Wiz, Yeah,
you know that was We're off to see the Wizard,
the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Speaker 2 (53:29):
Not in Kansas anymore. We're in Kansas City, which is
in Missouri, so maybe that's where.

Speaker 1 (53:34):
It all came from. I don't actually know.

Speaker 2 (53:37):
I do know that the first ever coach of the
Kansas City Wizards was one Ron Newman, the greatest coach
in San Diego soccer history, greatest indoor coach in history,
and they're starting center back was one Sean Bowers still
the president of Front Wave Arena up in Ocean Side
and the San Diego Soccers, and Paul Wright was their midfielder.

Speaker 4 (53:57):
So San Diego soccer history here on the Romaniacs.

Speaker 5 (54:02):
Look, it always connects back to the soccers.

Speaker 3 (54:05):
It always does.

Speaker 1 (54:06):
I'll find a way.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
Yeah, yeah, it always does.

Speaker 4 (54:10):
It always does, and that's why we love soccers again
the most successful soccer uh sporting franchise in San Diego.

Speaker 2 (54:18):
Hey, uh, new bonus edition of Soccer's Overtime next week.

Speaker 1 (54:22):
I'll tell Tony why.

Speaker 2 (54:23):
Once we're done recording, but he probably already knows because
I told him before.

Speaker 4 (54:29):
Like I said, Tony, why, as you're telling me that,
you're going to tell me why for the first time.

Speaker 1 (54:34):
No, no, no, I told you already.

Speaker 7 (54:36):

Speaker 1 (54:37):
