(00:00):
The following is brought to you bythe p l D Projects Network. It's
me, It's me, It's pl D. Eat Ship Eat ship.
That was my line. Definitely ship. Hey, it's me, it's me.
(00:57):
It's p l D. And I'mRichard get and I'm Maddie Gunner And
this is class action. Who shittiestmovie show on the interwebst I thought it
was the classest show on the interwebswhen each we're eating ship. Though we're
all eating ship, you're reading ship, you're reading I think my my ben
(01:17):
more blank impression just state ship aswell? Could did you do one?
Yeah? Yeah, yeah? Ohthat was your yea, that was that
was blanc. Then it definitely shockbecause I didn't even realize or it was
so good. It was so goodthat you guys have been watching so much
of Daniel Craig has been more blankover the last few days that you were
(01:38):
like, oh my god, itsounds just like him. We didn't even
notice the difference. He was likingthis. It was like being in the
same roumism either way. I'm onli I'm live for the second time today.
I did earlier on today. PGEand I were supposed to recording two
ways on film. We're supposed toget lead the weapon two. Of course,
the big DC announcement happened, andwe decided to say we just and
(02:00):
fuck it, We're gonna go live. So I've been live for a lot
of this afternoon, so I'm alittle tired. I am development only fans.
I'll see what happens there. I'mnot sure what I'm gonna have,
but uh, I'm I'm taking offersfrom people who want to put it forward.
Anything they can do. I'll dowhatever needs to be done. I
just need to make money just whereit's It's a tough economy. You know,
(02:21):
you can use only fans for othercontent other than actual content, right
what it's crazy talk. That isa thing. A bunch of UFC fires
use it for posting like their trainingvideos and et cetera, et cetera.
This is not me owning up thatI have subscriptions. But why, oh
why, And I can see thechat there Max Hanna Haskell. Of course,
(02:46):
Christo wants to see some feet inthe only fans I can do that.
I definitely have some hobbit feed. There's definitely a niche audience. I
got some pretty I got some prettynice feed, so we can we can
do that. We can go onan adventure together like the fellow sure Harry
Fied Fellowship of the Harry Feed. There you go, all right, today's
episode we are taking on knives Outversus glass Onion, Ryan Johnson versus Ryan
(03:10):
Johnson, Benoir Blanc versus Benoan Blanc. I want to say, this was
an exciting exciting week for me todo this. I feel like I love
this idea. We put moves upagainst each other. We did a non
movie last week because we broke brokeour our format for a bit, went
back to something a little different fora back to movieverus movie. These are
(03:32):
two movies that definitely screamed to beput up against each other, and yet
when you look deeper, I wouldsay, on the surface, these are
two movies that are set up tobe against each other. But it's amazing
how different they really are, andespecially being part of the same franchise.
Right, And of course we havea third one coming and that's supposed to
(03:53):
be even totally more different. Sothis is gonna be a exciting time.
I want you guys think about this. When we started this process, I
think it's perfect. I think thisis this is a perfect matchup. But
I think the difference is that thosetwo movies have is what makes it such
a good matchup, because I thinkmovies that are way too similar, like
(04:13):
doing Doing die Hard versus another dieHard movie, I feel like would be
you'd get get a little tiring ora bit like because you're comparing things that
are too similar, they're not comparablethat way. These ones are, I
think, way more comparable and waymore fun that in that way, that's
a good points. Good point. You know that Sean rumor is up a
good point also. But while Blanc'sonly fans that that's what got me.
(04:36):
You got me that by he crackedme. I was like, I was
listening intently to what you guys weresaying, and then I just like glance
star versions comment and they just crackedme either way. Knives Out and Glass
on the End are two wonderful piecesof work and such great star warts of
cinema today because they almost remind mea little bit hear me out little bit
(05:00):
of Oceans eleven in terms of gettinglarge cast of characters, famous cast of
characters together and can cover any walkof life. Really and it just seems
like they're having a good time makingthem, and it seems like these series
are that can keep going that way, which is going to lead into our
game today. We have separate castsfor of course, Jana Craig leading up
the cast, and we have thesedifferent set of celebrities in both through movie
stars and TV stars, and we'regonna get a third one which is gonna
(05:24):
be a completely different cast. Ilove the idea that means, because we
have at least consistency on one hand, but anybody could appear in these movies
and you're excited about it. Soit's a wide open palate that these films
have. It's made such a differentmark on the cinema world that a lot
of other movies have recently, youknow I'm saying on that, I think.
(05:46):
I think the fact that these moviesare completely different stories, stories that
can stand on their own is brilliant. I think you can watch Glass Onion
without seeing Knives Out, vice versa. And I'm pretty sure you can tune
into the third one when he comesout, and I think that is the
key to the longevity of this Idon't want to call it a franchise.
(06:06):
I don't. I would. Iwould hate to call it a franchise.
I think I think only Daniel Craigand Ryan Johnson kind of make it a
franchise. But this I don't know. To me, it feels like old
school filmmaking, when franchises weren't athing, like back to the Herkuol Paraday
like this, I think this isthe key to its longevity is to keep
(06:28):
it fresh, new every time Iget that Kelly and chat. Of course,
Yes, I've been on in yourscreen twice less than three hours.
I think you actually like it,but you won't admit it. But that's
okay. I'll let you not admitted. I'll let you be silent in your
love of my love of me.But alrighty, we do have five custom
made categories that we're going to delveinto in the Knives Out versus Glass Onion
(06:51):
debate or to determine which one isour which one is the better, Ryan
Johnson, Ben wil Blunt saga story, miss as you will. Before we
get to that, we're gonna playa game. This is where we used
to play what would that Harris play? This is where we had turned into
(07:11):
a wheel of recasting. But we'regonna do something a little bit different this
time because we talked about Knives Outthree coming out, and so we sat
down and he had said, youknow what, we know. We know
that Daniel Craig's gonna be in it, we know that Ryan Johnson is directing
it. But who else is gonnabe in it? Who's gonna be in
Knives Out three? Who do wewant to see in Knives Out three?
So we each decided to put forthan actor and an actress to fill the
(07:38):
supporting cast. As you will ofKnives Out three. We have six of
us there. That'll be six castmembers. But I'm gonna pull an audible
and say we're gonna have a seventhcast member. We're gonna have the podcast's
cast member. Of course, I'mbe talking about one person at Harris ed
Harris is gonna be in Knives Outthree because of Fielding Projects. How to
(08:00):
take it off my listens, notmy choice, it's the podcast choice.
As the patron saint of field theProjects. Do you know who he could
be? He could actually play apre existing character from Pay and Game.
He could be the detective from Painand Game. Yea across over there at
painting Game. I kind of likedthat idea, and that's it. Javi.
(08:22):
Javi's got that. I love that. I know I'm good. I'm
good like that quite a bit.I like that quite a bit, all
right. I love pain and Game, So Jovi, that's the one.
All right? Roger, Wait, why don't you give us your first pick
as cast member for Knives Out three? Mmm? So I have to say
(08:43):
them together because my go together. They go together because if they say one
of them, you definitely know whatthe other one is going to be because
I went the jokey way. SoI have two picks. One of them
I feel like is a cop outbecause it's not really a male and a
fee character, but the way I'mcasting them would make sense. So first
off, I would have Jeremy Rennerwith Jared Letto. Jeremy Renner I'm gonna
(09:13):
be there with his hot sauce fromglass Onion, and Jared Leto will actually
be a trans Jared Letto like hewas in Dallas Pirate Virus Club. So
he's filling the female role and he'spushing his combos and they both get killed.
That's the mystery. Is the onlyworst thing you could have done is
(09:33):
put Steven Seagal in that role. No, no, no, he gets
killed. Jared Letto gets killed. You get you get to watch Jared leto
die on screen. Okay, that'sa great choice. I like what you're
doing with that. I'm gonna putSteven Sagall on this. I'm kidding,
I kidding, I'm kidding, butyou understand my references though, right,
I do? I do? Itmakes it good. I like that idea
(09:54):
quite a bit, actually, Maddie, while we go with the years and
who you got? I mean,I so much God side note the scene
in a Sport. If you haven'tseen American Psycho, seen what Jared like
I have? By the way, really yeah, should should I mute for
(10:15):
a second wave when I'm back wavewhen I'm okay? Okay, okay.
The scene where Jared Letto takes anact to the head is the single most
satisfying thing I've ever seen on screenin my whole, entire fucking life.
Anyway, that's fair, you canget back, okay, anyway, back
to my casting, I guess Ican actually put mine in together as well.
(10:35):
Mine my first one, my actressis kind of a cough out.
I am bringing back on a dayMush returning cast member, I am bringing
I'm bringing her back with Tyko whitt t oh yeah, oh yeah,
oh ya, that's going okay.In me out, in knives out.
(11:00):
There's the moment where one of thesounds I can remember which one, is
talking about selling the rights to thebook for to be turned into movies,
movies and TV movies and TV.Tiger is going to play the director that
has been assigned to to make theTV and like the expanded universe of this
(11:26):
the director because I think jobs clickedwhere I'm vodka, give me two hours
of the Belvidere Vodkar advert. DanielCraig is just like that is just like
dancing and that is the best screenexperience of Daniel Craig ever, is the
Belvidere Vodka advert. And even ifyou watch the behind the scenes, like
(11:54):
him and Tiger are just having thetime of their lives making this advert.
And like I think Ben will Blancdancing around like Daniel Craig in that Velvete
volkar mm hmm, what oh perfection, this is perfection. Oh my,
(12:15):
that's pretty funny. I'm not gonnahave I did I have seen that pretty
hilarious stuff, all right. Ilike that. I will add my top.
I can't stop the thing. Andalso I didn't actually create characters per
ses. I'll have to win thata little bit because I just want to
throw people in there and let RyanJohnson figure it out. Two people I
want to see directed by Ryan Johnsonthough female side of things. It's someone
(12:39):
I have a crushed admous like Mattiedoes. I do. But there's another
woman that I have a crush onwho I love to see in a lot
of films, and I think shecould use a great director like Brian Johnson
to bring something out of her.I want to bring Mackenzie Davison. Oh
yeah, I loved her Tormentor.I loved her. I just watched Was
That the Martian yesterday? Love thatpicture as well. She's been in a
(13:01):
lot of different role a lot ofsci fi roles, giving her a grounded
role like this or not grounded necessarily, but a more like role in fat
which less her like kind of spreadrings and be a little fantastical. I
think, well for her. That'sso m about Kensey Davis in that role,
the male role, I did thinkabout a little bit as a possibility.
I'm gonna introduce Benoi Blancs. Iwas gonna say his mentor and in
(13:26):
detecting, so to speak, andthe person at a cast who I think
would be absolutely perfect for Ryan Johnsonfilm. It's Christopher Walkin. You know,
but I thought him, I taughthim everything that he knows. I
(13:50):
think thought you were I thought youwere going with David Shouche from the original
Aquiro. I thought that's where you'rewho You're going to break in at his
mentor That would be interesting too,But I guess I want to see Christopher
Walking in this in this universe.I feel like Ryan Johnson and him could
have a ton of fun together. And you already mentioned the vodkad. Christopher
Walking would fit very well in thatatmosphere as well. So him and Daniel
(14:13):
Craig dancing together, I got amovie right there. So so that's what
we're gonna tad let out Christopher Walking. Ad arbis. Wow, this is
this is quite a cast for RyanJohn's to assemble. Ed it airsport.
So you know, I just thoughtof another connected universe. Why not have
(14:37):
Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler pumping throughsomehow, and you have murder Mystery means
whatever the new Oh my god, both netflikes. Oh my god, dude,
this is writing itself. Let's let'slet's throw in Jude Lower and rub
it Downey Jr. While we're atit, A well, throw a better
(15:00):
I come to batch and as wellat that point, and uh and uh
barn Freeman, so we'll get themall together and then kind of brought up
a rounded office for Cruporo. Allright, there we go. We have
our new mystery series in play.We can't say anything further because we're actually
gonna write this and pitch it toRyan Johns, so we don't want to
spoil anything else. Let's move onto the meat of the show, as
(15:20):
it were. We're gonna be goingon trial putting up knives out versus Glass
on the end again. Five categories. I'll label them now as we get
going. We got category number onethe better blunk, which version of blank
is better? Two the better supportingcast like that as well. Three the
(15:43):
better mystery, which is a morefun mystery, which is more deeply ingrained,
which works better for you, forbetter villain who was the better bad
guy. And of course I mean, we're gonna spoil the mystery here,
so if you haven't seen these films, you probably should stop watching, go
see them and then come back andfive the better conclusion? Which conclusion is
(16:03):
a more satisfying one? And again, this is very interesting because of the
fact that they are such different takes. I mean, I'm not going to
get into too much because it's kindof Category three partially, but Knives Out
is a far more it's almost weirdto say serious, but it is more
serious. I think glass Onion iseven though knives Out is pretty ridiculous,
(16:27):
but there's some more of a seriousvibe to knives Out that's kind of taken
to a different way on a glassOnion, I'm very interesting. Which one
you guys like better? Do youhave a prediction? Do you have a
when you first got this place?Do you have that gut feeling that will
would prevail you do? Okay,Maddie seems pretty strong on It's I you
(16:48):
think class onion interesting? Jarvi, what about yourself knives Out? You think
knives out? To me? Tobreak the tie as far as the addictions
go, I cut instinct says saysknives out. Mm hmm. We don't
(17:10):
know, because we don't. Wenever know each of our others picked so
this is just conjecture at this Andwhile Jarvi has notes for days, I
tend to wing it. I tryto like look at it and go go
with my gut so I can changethings drop flat. I'm like a little
bit in between, like I havemy thoughts and then like when I haven't,
my initial thoughts ran down, andthen like I just expand and go
(17:32):
and let my mind wander. Youknow, you guys know I need my
notes because every once in a while, like my English only takes me so
far, so there are moments whereI completely go blank or blank and just
got nothing to say them. Andyeah, so I need those notes.
(17:52):
In the chat saying hey guys, just make a chat came in because he
hasn't seen these films yet. Definitelygo take a look. You'll definitely enjoy
yourself, and then come back andwatch the episode afterwards. But that comes
a good point. I didn't mentionthis earlier. This is your first time
here. You click that like subscribe, Get more of this, get more
class Action, get more of metwo media for weight us on Film,
Get more Holy Sono, Get moreCrown Jewels. We are trying to make
(18:15):
a modest goal of five hundred subscriberson YouTube. We are getting there,
slowly but surely. Slowly but surely, we are getting there, and we
really appreciate you for doing so.Now we are definitely four myself out.
Absolutely, yeah, that's true. All right, let's get into the first
one. We're gonna go a betterblank I'll start off this category if you
(18:36):
don't mind. I do think benOne Blanc is a very interesting character.
What I saw glass sunning and Iwas really surprised at the Benue Blanc we
got. Ben Wan Blanc in KnivesOut was definitely this mysterious, deep thinking
Sherlock Holmes meets her Cule Parole kindof character. But it was very kind
(18:59):
of straight. He felt like hefelt like he wasn't very colorful. If
you will, where's glass Onion,We get a much more deeper look at
his character. He becomes I mean, he has his husband, he granted
there all of a sudden, andhe's much more of a flamboyant like a
little bit of flamboyant dresser. He'smuch more worldly, and yet he still
seems more in the other way.He seems more human. He has these
(19:22):
great conversations where he mentions he's notBatman, he's not vigilante. He can
only do so much. He hasa great smile, which is a great
which is a great conversation to havebecause if you just look at him and
Knives Out, he almost felt hewas that like superhuman Strilockian character in a
way that he was going to solveeverything because he was Batman. He could
figure everything out and he took careof things physically as well. A little
(19:44):
bit more in Knives Out. ButI feel like Dano Craig had a blast
expanding on his character and Glass Onionand so to speak. And it's kind
of funny because Knives Out, we'rementioning Knives Out being a little more serious
in tone, and as far asmystery goes, the mystery is a little
more funny in Glass and the endingof the world gets you, makes Craig
(20:07):
almost Ben while Blank, almost madat the whole thing. And I love
that aspect of it. I lovethe fact he's like, no, this
isn't smart, this is an idiot. There is something special about that aspect
of it that made me love theGlass Onion. Ben well blank even better
than Knives Out. I think theKnives Out a little more. I don't
(20:30):
want to say generic, but I'veseen the character like that before. The
added color that we had from glassOnion wins it for me. So I
want to go glass on you blank. You said blank. His name is
blank blank blank blanky blank blanky blank, Richard, what about you? We'll
go for you. Yeah. Thisis the one where I go back and
(20:52):
forth for exactly both those reasons. The first one. He's more of a
traditional mysterious type of detective as thatthrough Cooparo vibe about him. He isn't
like derivative I don't want to say, but you can definitely see the influences
where his character comes from. He'slike, he's this sharp, traditional dresser,
(21:17):
kind of has his goofball moments, but glass and Blanc is just freaking
full of steroids from start to finish, like he actually he he kind of
does tone it down at the veryend, like he starts off like he
starts off in a bathtub smoking acigar. Playing among Us. I don't
know if you guys have played amongUs. That is like the essential game
(21:41):
for murder mystery buffer or something likethat. I usually I play that with
my friends quite a lot, andit's freaking fun. Like seeing Ben wa
Blanc do that. I mean thatgave him this movie like last Name,
and gave him way more pop culturalreferences than the first one. He was
definitely more modern that one, andwe find out more of his personal life.
(22:03):
He's Achilles Heel, which are dumbthings, dumb mysteries which almost get
the better of him. No,it's just dumb at the end. So
as much as I'd like to saythat he's more mysterious and more interesting in
Knives Out, and I have togo with glass Onion as well, because
it's Danya. Greg just is freakingenjoying him so and it's such a blast
(22:29):
to see and to see it afterJames Bond, just there are James Bond
vibes to him. Like some aspects, he's still a gentleman, but he
can just you know, let itlet it loose, as oh my godness,
this is something I don't want tosee letting it rip. I'm unanimous
(22:52):
with you two, I think. And this doesn't come from my not this
stain for Bond, but my inherentplan is for Bond. But I truly
feel like that this is the roleDaniel Craig was meant for because he is
having the absolute time of his lifedoing it, and you can tell that
he is. I mean, goingback to the Velvete Vodka advert, I
(23:17):
don't think that we would have gotthat advert if it hadn't been for Glass
Onion, because now he's Daniel Craighas like just embodied his silliness. He's
a he is a funny guy.You watch interviews with him, he is
a silly, funny guy. Andnow he's just like, oh, finally
I can let that side of meout. And in Glass Onion, You're
(23:37):
right, he's a lot more colorful. We see a lot more of his
personality. But the seeds were laidin knives out when they when she was
like you, you know, you'renot a very good detective, are you?
And he's like, well, you'renot a very good murderer, are
you? So we're meant for eachother. I like that. I like
that already. Then we will moveon to category number two. We got
(24:03):
better supporting cast. Now this isvery tough. This is definitively the toughest
one that we did. I thinkas far as I'm concerned because both have
their strengths, but I don't needthem really have a weakness per se.
Just to label it out there,Glass, I mean, we have Edward
(24:25):
Well spoiler alert, so I won'tuse Edward. Jordan got Janelle Morte,
I get Katherine Hahn, Leslie OdomanJr. Kate Hudson, Dave Batista,
Jessica Henwick, of course, andthen on the other side, you got
Anna the Armis, you got JamieLee Curtis, Michael Shannon, who's phenomenal
in this role, got Don Johnson, Tony collect who's spectacular as well,
(24:47):
Keith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, evenFrank Oz as a lawyer. I don't
know what it is about it.I love both of them, so it's
gonna break my heart to choose oneover the other. To be honest with
you, it's so difficult. SoI have to say, even though I'm
gonna pick one, I love both. My gut tell told me, and
I gotta stick with my gut, gotta go with knives out. And I
(25:12):
think the reason why I'm going withknives out is because of the dynamic as
a family added such to the story, and Michael Shannon particularly, I loved
who he was. I loved likethe moments he had with every single character
(25:33):
he had. And Tony Collette wasalso as good, if not better than
any any of the the Catherine hawor even Kate Hudson in that role.
It just there's something about it thatwe're just so wacky and so on the
nose in this I don't even know. It's hard to say. Benka and
armis who I am just as muchin love with as Maddie is. I
(25:56):
feel like there's just a smidge morefor me and knives Out in Glass Onion.
You know what, I could changemy mind by the end of this
conversation because I do love Batista andGlass Onion is fucking awesome. I love
Batista in this movie so much, and I do I do love the wrest
of them as well. They allhave their great moments. But the end
of the day, I gotta pickone. I gotta go knives Out.
(26:18):
What is reality? Jarvy? Whatabout you? Mm? You forgot one
of the most important characters in GlassOnion, Darryl. Just ignore I'm here.
This is just a guy with abox of coronas on a beach,
just roaming around from scene to scene, just annoying the crap out of it.
(26:42):
He's not really annoying the crap outof everyone, but he's just a
very funny character. Yeah, he'she's just there, which which was a
really nice touch. You said ityourself. There's there's no bad performance in
this. Every character is like intricatelyrich and performed. From Knives Out,
(27:03):
I'd say the standout is, likeyou said, Tony Koett, I feel
like glass On and has the otherside of that coin is Kate Hudson.
They are sort of the same typeof characters doing the same same kind of
thing, but Knives Out is moregrounded. When you think of the group
(27:26):
performances and the group characters in there, they are mostly one family and there's
sort of a sort of a logicabout them. This like family dynamic.
When you look at knives when youlook at glass In and again, everyone
is on freaking steroids. Everyone isfar into their respective limits and there is
less logic about them, and they'recompletely stereotypical in every way possible. It
(27:49):
works, it works for that typeof movie, and they definitely offered more
laughs than Knives Out, but KnivesOut has more nuance to these performances,
which I gotta give it to KnivesOut. I gotta go the same way
(28:10):
as you did. All right,Maddie, are you gonna make it a
three way tie both ways through orare you gonna? I am not?
Okay, all right, I'm goingwith Glass and I'm gonna just echo what
you two said everyone in both ofthese movies. I just want to say,
(28:30):
reals went off for a second there, that's all right. I just
gotta say before you continue, Iwant this note it down on the record
somewhere, so not court scenographer marksdown. Maddie Gunner voted against on Dharmas.
I just want to use that forthe record later on. So go
ahead, many continue. I didvote against my lovely, beloved, adoring
wife. Here's why I really likethe more depth that we got with few
(29:00):
you were characters in Gaston, Ifelt in Knives Out, there were a
few characters that kind of got leftout a bit, or like pushed off
to the side, like what's thekid's name? See, this is exactly
my fucking point. Ye Walter, the boy, the boy, Jayden Marshall
(29:23):
Martell's Jacob, Jacob Trombley. Yeah, Jacob, that's it not water Martin,
Like, I feel like there wasmore that they could have done with
him a little bit in the massimatingNazi. Yeah, the master but looking
and I'm so glad you brought himup, Dirtie. Dave Batista is the
(29:45):
fucking man in these movies. AndI say this because he reminds me of
so many people I know and somany people that I am friends with coming
from the MMM like that sphere, right, he reminds me. And like,
I'm not gonna name names, becauseI know a couple of them watch
this show. There were times Iwas watching it I was like, oh
(30:10):
fucking hell. He reminds me ofthis person. He reminds me of guarding.
That's something that this person would doin it like made me think,
what kind of fucking morons are myfriends with? Wow, I'm sorry the
commentary by Maddy Gonna does not necessarilyreflect the views at all. I love
(30:30):
our audience out there, Maddy continues, Not you guys, but there are
a couple of friends of mine Iknow that watched this show that like Dave
Thetisa, and this just like reallyreminded me of them, And I was
just like, man, the levelof depth that they go into each different
character. I found that more entertainingthan the overall casting. Knives out.
(30:52):
Okay, fair enough, fair enough. I can't complain Janelle Monney though in
Glass and we gotta get credit toher. I feel like she like she
had definitely the second most fun withher character other than Daniel Craig. Her
like the way she switched those characters, those accents, that she did her
(31:12):
final speech like that at the veryend where he does it like we'll get
probably get to a we talk conclusion, but he's her performance in that final
moment. Oh it was beautiful.Yeah, no, she was top punch.
I'm not gonna she was definitely onof the best parts about the about
the whole show. Actually didn't bringit up during the next segment, but
we'll talk about that next mystery.Better Mystery. I started the last two
(31:34):
just for SI. I done thatin a while, So why don't we
go on, Maddie, Let's startwith you better mystery. I'm going to
give this the knives out, okay, because I feel like the mystery in
the Glass Onion kind of like thelayers of an onion. It kind of
unraveled as we went along and wewere like slow walk through it, whereas
(32:00):
knives out, it was like asleight of hand, was like, we're
gonna show you this over here, but just out of you, Like you
can see it, but it's justout of you. The real mystery and
what's really going on is right here, but you just can't see it because
we're so keeping you so focused onthis bit that you're not looking at this
(32:22):
bit. So when this bit hitsand we'll get to conclusion that that's when
I was like, WHOA, Okay. So I feel like I preferred the
mystery that I was kind of like, what the fuck is going on to
the one where I was slowly startingto, like in my own brain unravel
(32:44):
what was going on. Interesting.Interesting you say that because I actually would
argue, honestly, it's the otherway around, to a degree, taking
out, I would say that classOnion to me was a more predictable villain.
Per se, we get to thevillain. I almost knew almost from
the beginning that Edward Norton was thebad guy. I kind of figured that
(33:04):
out right away. I did.I didn't figure out the the his level
of not being a genius, stupidity, money, but the whole twin swapping
thing and how he came into beingcompletely through me when she died and all
of a sudden she was back alive, and then we have the backstory of
(33:24):
everything and all that kind of thejump ship. I thought that was the
greater redirect as far as mystery goes. It was like, because I was
totally seeing this one of like,I'm trying to figure this out, Okay,
I can see I know who thebad guy is in my head.
It's kind of straightforward, and Iwas like, oh, I totally didn't
see this aspect of it. Whereasknives out it was a solid mystery.
I wasn't. It wasn't. Ijust think that was nearly as predictable.
(33:45):
I kind of. I thought theydid a great job of showcasing the different
motivations and different reasons why I couldbe even as they said, you know,
Ada Dharmus was involved in the deathright away, They kind of gave
you that right away. She's youkind of know right away she was involved
somehow, but you know, it'snot the end of the story because the
movie would be very short. SoI like that. I know, it's
(34:05):
kind of it's kind of ironic.I'm saying, it's kind of they peel
back to the layers like I startedto, right, But at the end
of the day, I think thethe mystery had more of a surprise aspect
to it. I guess, likeI was saying, is it's a slow
burn mystery in Knives Out, whichlet me along the path glass Onion kind
(34:27):
of like show me one thing andthen went a toy different direction. But
we have a difference of opinion ofhow it worked. But I still join
you and I like the Knives Outversion better. I did like the Knives
Out version better because as much asit was a kind of a cool twist,
I felt it was too sensational atwist. Comparatively, I prefer going
(34:51):
along with the mystery and figuring outthe piece that a lot more so I
would go with Knives Out. Thereason why I started chuck going a bit
is I remember something from Glasside,And do you guys remember what the name
of the island was? No,I don't remember. Off the top I
had no, No, Maddy,No, you're gonna get it. This
(35:15):
piece of shape, that's right, that's right, that's I mean. Ryan
Johnson just went he loves poking funand stuff he loves, just like,
whether it be this or the lastJedi, Like, he loves just like
(35:36):
poking fun of the genres that helikes to play around it. Oh yeah,
he's even references Baby Driver and KnivesOut. He goes like a bunch
of Baby Driver or something. They'rein the car. Chris Seven says,
But yeah, if if we're comparingmysteries, uh, this is I think
this is. Knives Out has thetraditional classy, stylish mystery. Glass Onion
(36:00):
has this heightened version of a extravaganzatype of mystery and Knives Out. The
reveal actually happens very early on.I think it's like halfway through the movie
or even even a bit before that, we find out that Anna de armas
(36:20):
well. Actually, but there isno killer because even though the Armis at
that point would have killed him,he still slid his own throat, so
there is pretty much no killer atall, which was a very nice,
nice touch. But you still Icouldn't for either of these movies. I
couldn't figure out which how this wasgonna go. And I think glass Iion
(36:42):
has this, Like sure, EdwardNorton seems like you're obvious villain. But
that's what's so unobvious about it,because you know the obvious villain is not
going to be the actual villain. So with that one, I think glass
Innon kind of took the took thesuspicion off of Edward Norton. And also
glass I had this very meta wayabout it to bring a murder mystery into
(37:07):
an actual murder mystery. So therewas there was a lot more elements,
a lot more of a playground there. But again I am going with Knives
out because I think the mystery I'mgoing to include the tone and the atmosphere
of the movie with the mystery categoryin this one. I like the classic
(37:30):
take on it, and I likethe fact that even though it seemed like
a classic tale, it still surprisedme to whens that I was not expecting
at all. That's absolutely fair, all right, Yes, as you as
you could tell, I couldn't differentiateconclusion from the mystery Bryan Johnson's verbed expectations.
(37:52):
I know it's crazy, right, all right. Then let's get into
that better villain, better villa inpart of the mystery here, damn it,
I will, I'll go ahead.Well, I guess striv you can
start this. When I just startedto I'll go I'll go fast. This
is this is the easiest category forme. This is itch it ith it
(38:14):
it definitely. I think I thinkChris Evans was perfectly slimy do she,
which we weren't used to seeing atthat point. He was coming off of
Captain America. At that point,I hadn't seen him as a villain the
Netflix movie what was it called Again, where he played the villain that wasn't
out the Man the Great Man.Yeah, which, and he can play
(38:36):
an awesome villain. I hope hegets more of these, uh, these
kind of roles or just villain roles. The only performance that can be picked
a part, in my opinion, and we couldn't talk about it in the
supporting cast because we weren't including EdwardNorton. That one is Edward Norton's performance.
I like, I love him asan actor. I think he's one
of the great character actors and he'sa great lead as well. But there
(39:00):
was something lacking from his performance. There were moments where, like, I
don't know, some genuinity, ifthat's the word, was sort of lacking
from his performance. Maybe it's thefact that he was the most obvious casting
choice is you could tell like hecan play an obviously great villain, and
he was obviously the villain in thismovie. So maybe everything seemed a little
(39:22):
too perfect. I don't know.I wanted something more surprising act of it,
and I got exactly what I wouldhave expected Edward Norton to do.
So yeah, there was maybe someflare and some flambuoyancy missing from him,
but I think that's because of thesupporting cast, because they were all so
(39:42):
you know, flamboyant all over theplace, so they kind of took away
from the obvious billionaire type who Soyeah, I don't know. It was
Chris Evan. This more memorable, more iconic in his sweater, So the
fact that he wore that freaking sweaterthat's a meme on its own. Yeah,
it's an iconic performance. I'll saythat. Wow. Okay, Ransom
(40:06):
Drashyle iconic character. Okay, Maddy, what about you? I almost went
with Chris Evans was Ransom because tome in Lives Out he was a very
very turned up version of his characterfrom another teen movie. Just that snot
nose easily little shit. But thereis something and I don't know if this
(40:30):
is more of a credit to RyanJohnson than it is to Edward Norton.
There's a moment where, clear asday, you see a photo, a
portrait of Edward Norton from fight Club. Oh yeah, behind the bar.
There is nothing more egotistical about abillionaire who thinks he's hot shit, And
(40:55):
this is this is so on thenose to this time. It's fucking brilliant
by Ryan Johnson of a tech billionairewho thinks he's God's gift, who thinks
he's the smartest person in the roomat all times, to the point he
designed this murder mystery which he thoughtthat even the world's greatest detective couldn't solve.
Who got it? Like that? And then he's left there like,
(41:19):
oh, and that's the thing,is like his character in Glass Onion,
it's such a one eighty from whatTyler Durdan is all about and what Tyler
Diurnon stands for. But then hehas the picture of him from fight Club
on the wall. It's just sobrazen and so I don't want to use
(41:42):
the word meta, but it's justso like God damn, it's so in
your face that I'm like that's that'sbrilliant. That is written so damn well
that I'm not wearing a hat ifI was, I'd take it off Ryan
Johnston for that, and Edward Nortonjust so damn well. Hm hmm.
(42:04):
That's a good argument to have.I gotta say this is a tough one
for me as well. In mynotes, I will say right off the
top about I wrote down knives out, wrote out in Chris Evans, and
I do love Chris Sevens for exactlythe reasons that that Jarviy you've already brought
up. Especially the most iconic linefrom all them is the ship moments,
the most iconic line of both movies. I think at this point each dy
(42:24):
hid I love seeing him as aship weasel. I love seeing him throughout.
Everything about his rule is getting it. But everything about each villain fits
the movie they're in. That maymake sense. And then I looked at
Look, I keep looking more,at more at Edward Norton and glass Onion
(42:45):
and it there's something to be saidwith how much it dupes the audience in
a way as predictable as the mysteryis, it's the work you duping,
which is what's brilliant about it.To me, we all buy into this
guy is the genius, is agenius. We buy in the whole time.
(43:07):
He set up his great traps,he's got these great tricks. Everyone's
well, like you'd see something thathe puts him in a worse light and
you're kind of like, oh,is this is this? This is maybe
he's not as good as we thought. And then it kind of quite made
me question the role. But thenthe reveal that he's a fucking idiot,
everything all of a sudden made sensecompletely, and I'm like it was a
(43:30):
brilliant piece of perform of us becauseit tricks you and thinking exactly what he
is. And he's really like likethe beginning, because then you go back
you watch it again the second time. He's about the beginning where Leslie OTO's
character keeps talking about, well,I get these ideas all the time.
He starts saying I did. You'relike, that's a genius idea and no
it's not stupid. But everybody's convincedhe's a genius. And we're convinced the
(43:53):
genius because the film told us he'sa genius. And he's you like,
you want to you want to screamout no, it's the idiotic reason.
Just like at the end we areDaniel Craig going, what an idiot?
He is an idiot. So it'sperfect for this kind of movie, for
this kind of mystery, because allthe whole time through, even though it
(44:15):
Daniel Craig is too smart for this, he's too good for this. But
what black Blanc is too good forthis? For this fucking idiot. And
yet Edward Norton plays that role sospot on perfect that he convinces you he
give it to us and I willthrow out there and this is the time
to throw it out there. Whata perfectly timed release. This was to
basically have Elon Musk being played byEdward Duran at the same time Twitter and
(44:39):
shows him, shows him out thereand shows us fallowing into the flat space.
Wow, I gotta give it aglass onion. At the end of
the day, I changed my vote. I love Chris Evans. This class
onions for me, and I'm alsogoing to raise the bar that period.
He is also very well timed withthe whole Kanye West thing. And there's
the main defensive Kanye has always been, Oh he's a genius man. You
(45:02):
don't understand his vision, Like he'she knows better than all of us.
He's got this wide vision that youguys just don't seeing. And then he's
like, no, the guy's afucking idiot. And Ship, what a
great you did you? Did you? Guys? Notice the Magnolia referencing.
Oh fuck yeah, I didn't evenforget about the flashbacks. She has the
(45:27):
hair and the best and that's sogood. That's so true. I told
you I totally forgot about that aswell. That's right, that's great fight
Club Magnolia. Dude, it's allthat baby driver. Okay, we are
on the final final category here betterconclusion? Which one is more satisfying?
(45:52):
Jarvy will start with you me again? Sure, I'll go. I know
I'm going against you guys because Ikind of gave it away. I love
the conclusion of Glass Sign and thefact that the twist was not a twist
at all, which made it atwist for me. So Glass Sign,
(46:13):
and now that we were at thefinal category, I feel like Glass Sign
and had an untraditionally an untraditional mysterysetup but had the most blandest, dumbest
and in that sense a traditional expectedending, which made it unexpected. I
know that sounds super weird, butit kind of turned it down. It
(46:35):
turned itself on its head and thenturned it down its head again. So
yeah, gave us a very ambitiousstory. And at the end, everything
that Daniel Craig does, the wayhe unravels everything that it's such a dumb,
dumb mystery. It's not a mysteryat all. But the conclusion actually
(46:55):
leaves with the villain winning because noneof the none of the the ship not
not the shoe wheels what are theycalled the disruptors, but the ship held,
the ship had none of the shipheads want to actually help out Genomena.
They're still on his side, eventhough he's burnt the napkin. They
(47:15):
like Janelle's got no evidence whatsoever. And that then the great scene happens where
Janelle gives gives the speech and heturns to ben Oblanc and he just goes,
I'm sorry, there's nothing I cando. I gave you the truth.
This is all I can do.That was such a genuine, I
don't know, dark and emotional momentin a very ridiculous movie overall, which
(47:40):
I loved, and the ending issomething I remember way more than in Knives
Out, which I love the KnivesOut ending, but I had to double
check the Knives Out ending I didn'tquite remember it. So with with that,
yeah, gotta go with glass allright, glass on is, Maddie,
(48:00):
how about you? I'm gonna givethis to the Knives Out Okay,
not just because of my beloved,my darling, my my angel and her
incredible performance, but that son ofa bitch Chris Evans got me like he
that man could sell pulling too ablind man, Like when he was sitting
(48:22):
in the in the diner, likejust like I'm gonna help you, like
we're gonna get you out of this. Just give me my cut and the
inheritance, that's all I want.I was like, cool, he's gonna
get what he wanted. Okay, fine, he's gonna he's gonna help her
out. I believe that sound ofa bit. So when like it like
it did the flip, and itturned out that he was the one that
(48:43):
like set it up all along usin there like oh you motherfucker. Because
then like the emotional weight of ithit me that like throughout this whole movie,
she's been sitting there like I killedhim. This man that I cared
for for so long, this manwho helped me and my family and gave
me everything, and I killed himby mistake and now he like he's laying
(49:08):
there with his throat cut open toprotect me, to protect my mother,
to protect my sister, and becausethis motherfucker was getting cut out of the
will you set me up? Iwas just like, fuck dude, over,
Like the ending with glass Onion isfucking spectacular and how like the spiritual
(49:30):
commentary and everything on it, butjust like the emotional weight of like her
realizing and then the set up atthe end to expose him, I was
like, well done, well done, because like, hey, Chris haven't
had me for I can't argue that. I can't argue that at all.
(49:50):
Look at that face, man,Interesting? Can you blame me? Interesting?
This is very interesting. Out sendingyou actually find out that she didn't
mix up the meds R and shewasn't going to kill Harlan. So actually
Harlan just killed himself. Yes,that that is a great ironic twist on
its own. That's very true.Uh, Lego going to see Lego and
(50:15):
here I'm home early the French toastlots ready to hear about glass onion superiority.
Well, you're here in time tofigure out the ending is my last
bit here. I will say thisat the ending of the film, the
conclusion of the film. I reallyenjoyed Knives Out the second time quite a
bit. What I loved about theKnives Out conclusion is that every time you
(50:36):
think you had it, every timeyou think you had to figure it out,
every time they you thought they weregoing to conclude it, they would
just also add a little twist, and it's like, no, not just
that, not just that, notjust that, And you have everything going
on until finally Chris Evans reveals himselfand admits attempting to kill uh fran I
think it's friend, but yeah, yeah, fr Eddie goes for the knife
(50:59):
when he takes the wrong Yes.So I loved how that worked out because
even though I had no idea whatwas going on, I almost believe Chris
because I mean, that's a perfectstunt casting really, because Chris Evans is
so heroic, Like Jarviy says,You're so you're seeing him as Captain America.
Still that kind of like just rubsoff on you a little bit.
You're kind of like Americans asked,he's not gonna do anything, but they
(51:22):
reveal it nice, and I thinkthat's probably why he took the role,
quite honestly. With that being sent. With that being sent, I can't
not love the ending in class Onionbecause of how unique and how different it
is. We the whole time we'vebeen saying I was a much more traditional
classic mystery. Glass Onion takes allof that and throws out the window the
(51:46):
very fact that this was a Igo back to it several times now.
He's an idiot that this is nota mystery that Benui Bland worth solving because
he's the guy who is such amoron. I love the fact that it
gets comes down to that that BenaBlanc was too smart for his own good
and figuring out too many things thatjust didn't matter, when at the end
(52:07):
of the day, it all simplycame down to Edwin Norton's character being a
dumbass, And that is brilliant tothat's a brilliant interesting of the night,
so to speak, none with theknives out there. But I also love
the fact that he gets so madabout it. He gets so mad about
the whole time, like Benma Blancgets so mad about it. He does
(52:27):
have that dark moment at the endtwo that makes it just serious enough where
you keep going. You don't sellout completely as far as the humor side
of things anytime. If it wentlike just a little bit further, it
would have been almost too much intothe comedy realm and not believe, and
it'd been just too much of acartoon to be real. It feels the
wrong word because it's all very crustulationbut over the top. It' been too
(52:49):
over the top. This was aperfect blend of comedy, serious, smart
characterization. I feel like the endingis unique and happy. In the Glass
Onion, I'm going with Glass onYou. That's my final there's I just
realized, actually both movies have ahave an idiot villain. Because Harlan says
(53:10):
it, he's even he's an idiot. He won't know a prop knife from
a real knife, and he trieswith the prop knife knife at the end.
It kind of gives him the idiotside as well. But what Matti
said is actually very true as well. He duped us and he duped Anna
with his good kayak, and inthe end, so he kind of was
an idiot. But he knew howto you know, twist and Nye.
(53:32):
I do wonder if it's like becauseI'm bringing that, I'll bring it up
again briefly when it says it's likethe whole Ellen Musk and Kanye with how
it's so current, how Chris Evans, it's almost like he Ryan Johnson is
a master of using the audience againstthemselves and not for both movies in a
while, but glass On was justmore of a bigger swing and doing that
(53:55):
and a connected and a connective youknow what. I just realized what mm
hmm Chris Evans is the Lost Jedihates because they are solely like they're going
off to all of this because theydidn't get what they wanted. No,
(54:19):
I'll say that probably snows they're they'regunner. I'm just saying that's a little
light bulb because you're saying that, like a little light bulb in my head
was like, was there a littlebit of Ryan Johnson being like could be
because you definitely wouldn't do it soblatantly, So I like where you're heading
out that he's definitely over soiled thatway. I like that idea. I
like that concept, all right, that means where you're done, we are
(54:42):
done with the episode as far asthat goes. We h have a winner.
We have a winner. And thereason why I said it was very
interesting. Give it to me,the winner of this match, the winner
of this court battle by a scoreof eight to seven glass Onions. Yes,
(55:08):
I wanted knives out to it.No glass Onion. And that's why
I said. I kind of scurredup as I get seven to seven,
as I go to the final thing, and I was like, it's me
deciding knives out a glass. Iwas a deciding vote at that point,
and I had predicted knives out toit. I predicted it to in ye.
At the end of the day,I guess glass Onion's big swing more
(55:30):
flamboyant Benoa Blanc is the one thatit's a big swing versus a classic tale.
You know. I gotta I gottasay something. Me and Cristo we
watched glass Onion together. I thinkit was where it came out, uh,
and we we had whiskey, weregetting drunk. We chatted and most
of the movie actually kind of justflew by us. We weren't paying much
(55:52):
attention because we were getting drunk whilewatching it having. I just watched it
today before the show again and Irealized what I great movie it was and
how much I missed the first timearound. So Chris, I will definitely
watch it sober again and everyone elsebecause also if the reason why I think
some people didn't like the movie isbecause they weren't following along, there was
(56:14):
so much genius in that movie. It was indeed, it was Indeed.
I love the chat. Okay,it looks like another close Ones as ke
W has rights two weeks in earlyeight seven, Lego and the crowd goes
wild. I get that, LikeChris is saying, that's crazy, and
it comes down to murking Elons asGalactus, and I can't. I can't
(56:35):
argue there. It's all about themurking of Elon. Alrighty, well that's
where we end up this week.I'm excited. I'm excited that it was
a lot of fun. I wishI could tell you what we're doing next
week, but we haven't decided yet. We haven't had this problem in a
while. We had like the lastlike six weeks, like laid out again.
But until we do that, Iwill take the shout out pictureon dot

I can't wait for you guys tosee that. It should be entertaining.

a good, good, good guest. Let's put it that way. And
then, of course I did Crowna Crown Jewels Journey through Queen. I
did last week's Stone Cold Crazy withour special guest Mike Deacon. This week,
It's a Dear Friend, a shortand sweet piano ballad, which means
(59:51):
a shortened sweet episode only seven minuteslong. I believe this week because it's
that quick. But that's it fornow. I have two other podcasts in
the work. They're gonna be irregularpodcast because I can't want to do four

that's okay. I'm excited to talkabout it more with PJ. And now,
