Drama on a Wednesday with episodes of Let George Do It,
The Whistler, The Shadow, and Romance That's All Straight Ahead.
On this Wednesday, twenty fourth day of September two hundred
and sixty seventh day of the year, ninety eight days
left in twenty twenty five. The Opposite of the Attorney
General and the Poe st Office Department established on this
(01:02):
date in seventeen eighty nine. Gold prices plummeted on this
date in eighteen sixty nine after Ulysses S. Grant ordered
the Treasury to sell large quantities of gold after Jay
Gould and James Fisk plotted to control the market. I
think we have an episode somewhere of the Crime Classics
(01:26):
that deals with this. It was on this date in
eighteen ninety the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter day
Saints officially renounced polygamy. It was on this date in
nineteen oh six President Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed Devil's Tower in Wyoming,
the nation's first national monument. Cathay Pacific Airlines founded. Airways
(01:47):
founded in Hong Kong on this date in nineteen forty six.
Majestic twelve, a secret committee of scientist, military leaders, and
government officials allegedly established by secret executive order President Truman
to investigate UFO activity in the aftermath of the Roswell incident.
(02:08):
Honda founded on this date in nineteen forty eight. The
Honda Motor Company. President Eisenhower, on this date in nineteen
fifty seven, as we told you, previously, sent one hundred
and first Airborne Division troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to
enforce desegregation.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Disorderly mobs have deliberately prevented the carrying out of proper
orders from a federal court.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
Local authorities have not.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Eliminated that violent opposition.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
I mean, you had the Erace riot blooming there, white
people threatening black folks, and that was just it was
an ugly, ugly situation. President Eisenhower did the right thing.
In nineteen sixty the USS Enterprise, the first nuclear powered
aircraft carrier launched at Newport News, Virginia. Final episode of
(03:01):
Howdy Doody aired on this date in nineteen sixty They.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Can't what time is that?

If I have trouble with YouTube over this, it's going
to make me crazy. This is why I tell you
don't listen on YouTube. Always listen to our other We're
on every other podcast app or just on YouTube, because
some people refuse to go anywhere else anyway. The show
aired for twelve years on NBC, ending on this date
in nineteen sixty sixty five years ago today, moving from
(04:05):
ABC afternoons to NBC primetime. On this date, Rocket Jay
Squirrel just flew There, Rocky and Bullwinkle. The show aired
on ABC from nineteen fifty nine to nineteen sixty one
and black and White on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons before
becoming the lead in to Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color.
(04:28):
Nineteen sixty two, US Court of Appeals ordered the University
of Mississippi to admit James Meredith, the first African American
student at the University of Mississippi. Now, do you realize
we've talked about TV shows, and we've talked about nuclear subs,
(04:48):
but the main focus has been dealing with discrimination against
African Americans. Horrible. You know what else was horrible the
ratings for the show that premiered on this date in
nineteen sixty four, The Monsters. They did seventy episodes, canceled
(05:10):
after ratings dropped to a low due to competition from
ABC Batman Now. The ratings were low during its initial
two year run, but The Monsters found a huge audience
in syndication. It warned the spinoff series, which was not
(05:30):
nearly as good, and several films, including one with a
theatrical release. A landmark television program from CBS News made
its debut on this date in nineteen sixty eighth First Voice,
The audience heard Harry Reisner.
Speaker 9 (05:47):
Good evening, This is sixty minutes. It's a kind of
a magazine for television, which means it has the flexibility
and diversity of a magazine adapted to broadcast journalism.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Back in the day, the show was something else. It
continues today. It has seen its fair share of controversy
over the years. President Clinton signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test
Band Treaty at the UN on this date in nineteen
ninety six. It was on this date in two thousand
and five, twenty years ago today, Hurricane Rita made landfall
(06:20):
in the US, devastating Beaumont, Texas, and portions of southwest Louisiana.
Speaker 10 (06:26):
Sounded like everything was just coming in on top of us.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
It was the voice of Carol Morgan who rode out
the storm in a closet, and Rita tore up about
two or three radio stations that our programs were on
at the time, and one of those stations never came back,
(06:50):
was destroyed, and the cost to rebuild was horrible. Iranian
President mackmood Appaddi John gave a controversial speech on campus
of Columbia University on this date in two thousand and seven.
It was on this date in twenty fifteen, Pope Francis
became the first pope in history to address a joint
(07:10):
session of Congress.
Speaker 11 (07:12):
Thank you very much and God bless America.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
Pope Francis. Ten years ago today, an impeachment inquiry initiated
by the House against President Trump on this date. In
twenty nineteen, inquiry passed the House failed in the Senate,
boats in both houses strictly on party lines. And it
was two years ago today NASA's Osiris rex capsule containing
(07:38):
samples from the asteroid one oh one nine five five
menu successfully landed back on Earth, and it showed that
if we wanted to see if we could blow something
like that up, we could well, I mean, if it'd
be iffluent, you know, if it was something that was
(08:00):
of a danger to earth. The daughter of Winston Churchill,
Sarah Churchill, passed away on this date. She was an
actress of some note. Commissioner Gordon on sixties batman Neil
Hamilton also passed away on this date, and Theodore Geisel
doctor Seuss passing away on this date in history. Birthdates
(08:24):
of those who are no longer with us include Irish
brewer Sir Arthur Guinness, novelist Epscott Fitzgerald from Threes Company
in the Ropers, Audra Linley Missus Roper from The Steve
Allen Show, comedian Dayton Allen. She was on General Hospital,
but I think her best renowned, at least to me,
(08:44):
was when she was Alice in the nineteen sixty sixty
seventy Jackie Gleason's show reboot. Sheila McCrae, also wonderful singer.
Another fine actress, singer Anthony Newley born on this date.
Jim Henson born on this date. Slender McCartney, late wife
(09:04):
of Paul McCartney, born on this date. Jerry Marsden of
Jerry and the Pacemakers was born on this date. Lou Dobbs,
whom we lost last year, born on this date, and
actor Phil Hartman. All those folks born on this date,
they have all left the building.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Hi, this is Jeff Foxworthy.
Speaker 12 (09:23):
It is now time for the birthday announcements.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
The following people are now officially older than dirt.
Speaker 5 (09:29):
They include from Hercules and Andromeda, Kevin Sorbo sixty seven
today from the Food Network, chef Robert Irvine, who is
married to TNA Hall of Famer and former WWE wrestler
Gail Kim, who never got a chance in the WWE,
(09:50):
never really did. She made her mark as an outstanding
wrestler over there, and she married Robert Irvine. Good choice
by or Butte sixty years old today is Robert Rbunt,
speaking of the WWE Stephanie McMahon Lebesque forty nine years old,
the daughter of Bence McMahon and the wife of the
(10:12):
guy who's running the WWE these days. Allegedly from Teen Wolf,
Madmen and Yellowstone. Ian Bowen is forty nine today the
twenty fifteen Miss Universe Pia Wurzbach thirty six. If you
know Pia Worsback, you understand why she's on the list.
From Pitch Perfect. Ben Platt is thirty two, also thirty two.
(10:36):
Former WWE wrestler Sonya Deville. Those just a few of
the people celebrating the twenty fourth day of September, as
says their birthday. If this is your birthday.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
Hi, We're the four Freshmen and we just want to
say happy birthday.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
To Bob Bailey, Virginia, Greg Let George do it. That'll
get a start here. On this edition of Classic Radio
Theater with Wyatt Cox on a Wednesday.
Speaker 13 (11:10):
A wise farmer knows that he must get his livestock
undercover to protect them from radioactive fallout. An attack may
never come, but it's wise to prepare.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
Now, Okay, I'm gonna admit something. The twenty fifteen Miss
Universe pageant was one that I enjoyed for multiple reasons,
not just the fact that Pia was a wonderful person
and I did get to meet her once years and
(11:40):
years later, but and the fact that she was the
first biracial Philipina to win the title.
Speaker 14 (11:48):
She was.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
They had but two and two and four years from
the Philippines. No, three in four years from the philip No. Well,
I'm shut up. I'm saying things I don't know. But
if you remember that pageant, Steve Harvey was the host,
and Steve Harvey came out and announced Miss Columbia Arianda
(12:16):
Guillette was the winner, and then she got the crown,
and then Harvey came back and said, I'm wrong, I
read the results wrong. Peter words back the winner, and
that was you know, I felt so bad for Steve Harvey.
(12:37):
But Pia a wonderful lady of not only Filipina and
German heritage. And then the family moved back to the
Philippines where the parents separated, and she has been very,
very busy. She was before she became that, she was
(13:02):
an actress and a model and a host and a
TV personality, and then she went back to becoming a
host and a model and a TV personality, and she
has She's done a lot, and she was She attended
Fashion Week last year. She walked in Fashion Week alongside
(13:25):
Kendall Jenner, Carra Delvegni, Eva Longoria, uh Viola Davis, and
Jane Fonda others. And she did a whole lot of
good for the Philippine people over the years. She's raised
a lot of money too for Philippine charities. So anyway,
(13:46):
let's get back to this. Let's get back to the
stuff that is not newsworthy but is rather worthy of
a lot of other things. Bob Bailey Virginia Gregg an
episode to Let George do It. This goes back to
September twenty fourth, nineteen fifty one, seventy four years ago,
as George is or somebody's framed for hanging.
Speaker 7 (14:11):
Personal notice dangerous my stock in trade. If the job's
too tough for you to handle, you got a job
for me. George Valentine rite full details.
Speaker 15 (14:40):
Standard Oil Company in California invites you to let George
do it. Before we begin tonight's adventure of George Valentine,
here's a reminder about motor oil compared with premium typhoils
(15:02):
as designated by the American Petroleum Institute. New RPM motor
oil doubles engine life between major overhauls due to lubrication,
and it doubles protection against gum, acid and corrosion for
longer and better engine performance. Change over to new RPM
motor oil at independent Chevron gas stations or standard stations
(15:23):
where they say and mean we take better care of
your car. Framed for hanging. Another adventure of George Valentine.
Speaker 16 (15:45):
Dear mister Valentine, my name is A w Anchors. The
card I'm.
Speaker 17 (15:48):
Enclosing will introduce you as my reports anchors.
Speaker 7 (15:51):
Surely you realize the importance of that name. Of course,
initial A is for Andrews and all the money of
his mother's family.
Speaker 17 (15:57):
Ever heard of, Well, let me read the rest of them.
Speaker 7 (15:59):
He's from Detroit and when he asked me this afternoon
to deliver this message, you please well like hold, you're
just delivering this note. Check mister whatever your name is, Frame, Gerald, Frame.
But of course everyone calls me Jerry. You see, I'm
in the downtown office of mister Ankor's local administrative branch.
He's only in town once every six months or so. Okay, naturally, Kframe,
(16:19):
I get the picture. Everyone makes his little jokes. So
mister Frame, tell me what's in this note from this
big shot boss of yours anchors. Well, of course I
don't know exactly what, so you don't know. Tell me
why you should know? You delivered it. Like the man said,
thanks very much, goodbye. No, no, he asked, I don't mind, though,
certainly if mister Ankers needs assistance, we should all do
(16:40):
what we can.
Speaker 18 (16:41):
Curiosity kill the cat. Doesn't that worry in office?
Speaker 19 (16:44):
Boy?
Speaker 7 (16:45):
What off? I beg your pardon? I'll have you know.
I'm in a position of some trust in the organization
you frame out of it. Now, see here, mister Valentine,
eager beaver, go on with the letter Brooks.
Speaker 16 (16:56):
Oh, dear mister Valentine, my name is a w Anker's
the crowd and closing will.

Speaker 16 (17:02):
I expect you to meet me at the office of
the Dewey Company, one of my local holdings, promptly at
five point thirty.
Speaker 7 (17:07):
Uh huh, as nibs is spoken, Well that's almost five

Speaker 17 (17:13):
George.
Speaker 16 (17:13):
Listen, my local inspection tour suggests that I have one
problem of personnel to clean up.
Speaker 7 (17:19):
Oh, personnel, so that's it. Name of frame you want
to bet the office? Noosance, big case?
Speaker 4 (17:26):
Certain?
Speaker 7 (17:27):
What's the matter?
Speaker 16 (17:28):
Well maybe this isn't quite as routine as it looks, George. Uh,
mister Ankers says, I normally don't interfere in these matters
of local personnel, but I need your advice since I
certainly don't want to be the employer of anyone who
might commit murder.
Speaker 17 (17:56):
We're only a few minutes.
Speaker 7 (17:57):
Late, George, I don't see anybody wedding.
Speaker 20 (17:59):
In the race.
Speaker 18 (18:00):

Speaker 16 (18:15):
Supposed to meet mister Anchors. Dreadfully sorry, who a w Anchors?
Speaker 7 (18:21):
I have a card he wrote to introduce you.
Speaker 21 (18:23):
No, no, no, that's not necessary. I'm so sorry. Yes,
of course you're his personal representative. I mean, I had
no idea. It's just that I had a date and

Speaker 7 (18:34):
Oh please excuse me for sure? Where is it?
Speaker 21 (18:37):
Well he was in and left. I don't know, but
he'll be back if he said he'd meet you. Why
don't you just sit down and wait? I mean here,
you take the keys.
Speaker 20 (18:47):
That's it.
Speaker 18 (18:48):
And for heaven's sake, don't tell him I've treated you
like a salesman.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Hey, wait a minute, I can't get you.
Speaker 18 (18:54):
Just lock up and leave, leave the keys here tomorrow.
Speaker 17 (18:58):
Well, my little car, it seems to work.
Speaker 7 (19:00):

Speaker 18 (19:01):
Imagine knowing a man who knows, a man who knows
a w anker.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Oh sure, a big man accepting words. He only told
me what it was he wants me to do.
Speaker 18 (19:10):
I probably your name isn't George Valentine?
Speaker 22 (19:13):
Is it?
Speaker 7 (19:14):
Oh? Back a canna? That's right? What's yours?
Speaker 21 (19:17):
Angela, Angela Barclay. There's an envelope out there on the table.
It's in mister Ankor's handwriting for me.
Speaker 7 (19:25):
Let me see.
Speaker 17 (19:26):
Well, he must have left it when he was here.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Yeah, thanks, Well, what are you waiting.
Speaker 18 (19:34):
For, mister Valentine? What exactly are you doing for? Mister Ankers?
Speaker 7 (19:40):
You expect me to answer that.
Speaker 18 (19:42):
Well, I don't want to be personal quite so quickly.
Speaker 16 (19:45):
Of course you don't, darling, mister Valentine is nothing but
a personnel man.
Speaker 21 (19:51):
Well, I might be personnel Mike and I yeah, yeah,
I guess you could be a problem.
Speaker 17 (19:57):
Oh, thank you, But.
Speaker 16 (19:59):
That George, Miss Berkley seems to have a date with
Jerry Frame tonight. I'm sure she'sn't hurt. What well, how
did you know?
Speaker 17 (20:06):
Guess he's a man we met once.
Speaker 16 (20:09):
Oh I noticed mister Frame's picture on your desk, that's all.
Speaker 17 (20:12):
He looks much better without his class.
Speaker 18 (20:13):
Oh he doesn't mean anything. He's just the pursuing type.
Speaker 21 (20:17):
You know how it is, And when your job throws
you together with someone who's ambious, you're.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
Sure you're curious.
Speaker 18 (20:24):
Oh but I'll stay here if you like. I meant
I could break the date.
Speaker 7 (20:29):
I know, I know. That's what I mean. You and
Frame have one thing in common. You'd like to know
what's in this letter?
Speaker 17 (20:36):
Well, good night, mister Valentine.
Speaker 16 (20:41):
What it looks goold killed George. She might be the
type any employer would worry about.
Speaker 7 (20:48):
You know, this case is crazy, more orders than the
big man.
Speaker 17 (20:52):
What does mister jankers say.
Speaker 7 (20:53):
Sorry, but I've see no reason for waiting. Besides, the
person I want you to meet and give me your
opinion on is right there anyway.
Speaker 17 (21:00):
Then it is her weight I'll callor his name.
Speaker 7 (21:02):
Is Joseph Portland. H Oh, that doesn't somebody we haven't
even met yet.
Speaker 17 (21:06):
Joseph Portland is right here in the woodwork.
Speaker 7 (21:10):
Silly, crazy?
Speaker 17 (21:11):
Which where are you going?
Speaker 7 (21:12):
To give anchors the benefit of the doubt for about
one quick look?
Speaker 4 (21:15):
Then we go home.
Speaker 17 (21:16):
But that's the wrong door.
Speaker 7 (21:17):
Or the lights back here anywhere?
Speaker 17 (21:19):
This might lead to another office, but from the street
it just looked like warehouses in the back.
Speaker 7 (21:27):
He's right here, Sure, investigate the little man. Who wasn't there? Yeah,
I mean that's no employee. Somebody snooping around stealing John.
There's a side window here, I can see the street light.
I'm gonna take a look at.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
I'm all right, I see here.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
It's crazy.
Speaker 4 (21:56):

Speaker 7 (22:14):
Relax? Prosy? I can't even see where I am.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Oh you don't. I'll get those lights.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Oh to you.
Speaker 23 (22:22):
I guess I better get the police night. What oh, brother,
nobody's going to creep up on me.
Speaker 7 (22:27):

Joseph Portland's stand.
Speaker 4 (22:31):

Speaker 2 (22:33):
I'm not Hank Wales.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
I'm no sucker.
Speaker 17 (22:36):
Stop waving that thing you stand.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
Over there, two sisters of Portland.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Wait.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
I didn't know who you were, that's all, and now
you're educated the operator. Give me the police.
Speaker 7 (22:46):
Now listen, I don't blame you for jumping. That's Portland.
Speaker 2 (22:49):

Speaker 7 (22:52):
Huh yeah, sure here, Look I got a card, says

Speaker 4 (22:58):
This is the Dewey company. Mac Dewey's my boss.

But mister Ankors owned the company, doesn't he.
Speaker 23 (23:04):
I take my orders from Dewey. Say sure, sure, sure,
I understand that. But you're a sick man. You've got
palsy and the trigger for me.
Speaker 7 (23:13):
Hey, now shoot somebody, George, you can reach the gun now.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
I can't come on, Brooks. Let's get out of here fast.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
I don't have to dislike this case anymore, because now
it's all over but what businesses anchor's got meddling with
my personal problem? Mister Dewey, I don't know, and I
don't care. No, I'm not blaming you.
Speaker 17 (23:42):
You understand well we are. It took too long to
find you.
Speaker 7 (23:45):
But it'd take a lot more than two hours to
find the mighty Anchors. So I'm telling you to get
a new watchman down there and fast. Thanks and good night.
Portland's all right, Anchors is crazy illphone is hotel just
because he buys me out. There's no reason, mister Dewey,
whom do I sew for being shot at?
Speaker 17 (24:03):

Speaker 16 (24:04):
But Joe is a watchman and you were he call
out to us or ask what we were doing?
Speaker 7 (24:08):

Speaker 4 (24:13):
That's all I care.
Speaker 7 (24:14):
About, mister Valentine, I know what you Portland's like. He's

Wales who.
Speaker 17 (24:24):
George that's the same name the watchman means?
Speaker 7 (24:27):
And Anchors ought to understand he was in town when
it happened. What kind of a bloodless machine is he?
Maybe Portland hasn't gotten over it. Maybe he does need
another vacation. I'll wait a minute. Who's Hank Wales? What
what's happened? And I thought you knew Hank was a
buddy of Portland's before he was killed?
Speaker 25 (24:46):
Killed?
Speaker 7 (24:46):
Sure last year?
Speaker 4 (24:48):
Hello?
Speaker 7 (24:49):
Give me room sixteen hundred ten please, Yes, sir, Portland
got shot in the leg, but Hank let them get
the drop on him, just from being such a polite watchman.
Who got the d up on Wales? Who killed him?
The same whoever it was, who got away with the
payroll and the rest of it. Didn't you ever hear
of the amalgamated robbery that was us a third of
(25:10):
a million dollars? I see, no wonder Portland's still a
bit nervously. Oh, hello, mister Anker, he give me that? Hello?
Speaker 20 (25:18):

Hello?
Speaker 7 (25:21):
Mister Ankers? This is that sucker named George Valentine you

Speaker 20 (25:25):
At What's that?
Speaker 7 (25:26):
What are you talking About'm sorry to wake up like
this in the middle of the night, but I wanted
to give you a report. That's more than you gave
me before I started. What no, no, no, no, I
gave you his name Joseph Portland. I wanted your opinion,
having such a nervous watchman, but you didn't wake me up.
The police did. They're standing here right now. Why I
just hired you too late, that's all. Joe has murdered
(25:48):
a man, just as I was afraid he might. Joe
has yes, killed a prowler, not over half an hour ago.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Prowler. I knew that man should be fired.
Speaker 7 (26:00):
Okay, bustell, let's have it.
Speaker 19 (26:01):
Fine.
Speaker 7 (26:02):
Watchman Portland shot one of my own men. That's what
he did, some witless, young eager beaver from the office uptown.
He killed a fellow named Gerald Frame.
Speaker 15 (26:26):
We'll return to tonight's adventure of George Valentine in just
a moment. You don't have to be a musician to
know that you can't play a melody with just one note,
and trying to make your car give all around performance
with just one gasoline quality is equally impractical. Refinery engineers
can make a gasoline that will stress one performance quality
above all others. A gasoline can be produced that gives
(26:48):
you quick starting but very little mileage. Another may give
you lots of power but lack other necessary performance qualities.
The makers of Chevron Supreme take into account the fact
that a gasoline must have many different qualities.
Speaker 7 (27:00):
In order to give all round performance.
Speaker 15 (27:03):
Chevron Supreme Gasoline gives you not one, not two, but
all eight high performance qualities incorrect balance. They are power, mileage,
add a knock, vaporlock, prevention, starting, warm up, acceleration, and
area blending qualities that are right for the kind of
driving you do. Where you do it, be sure your
(27:24):
tag is filled with not one, not two, but all
eight high performance qualities. Qualities you get in every gallon
of Chevron Supreme at standard stations and independent Chevron gas
stations where they say and mean we take better care
of your car. Now back to tonight's adventure Ofeorge Valentine.
(28:01):
The mighty mister Ankers has hired you a nervous night
watchman at the planet one of his local companies needed
to be replaced. The only trouble is he wasn't replaced
soon enough. He's killed a man, the eager beaver named
Jerry Frame. Well, if your name is George Valentine, it's
a little hard for you to believe that this is
anything but murder.
Speaker 23 (28:20):
He was crawling along there. I tell you, I thought
he was trying to get him with a files a cap.
Speaker 7 (28:24):
But couldn't you recognize him work for the same outfit, the.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Jerema knight Watchman. I've never seen him before. It's true.
Speaker 7 (28:30):
Frame had no business coming down here, Lieutenant Johnson, except
in the day testament of mister Ankers. Please, Joe, didn't
you challenge him or anything?
Speaker 4 (28:37):
You think I'm doing guard duty?
Speaker 7 (28:39):
Are you shot first and ask questions after us?
Speaker 17 (28:41):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Leave me alone. You should have been fired months ago.
Speaker 7 (28:44):
I can say that again.
Speaker 4 (28:45):
I'm not gonna end up dead like Hank Wales. You cops.
Speaker 23 (28:48):
I don't know what it's like to be all alone
and responsible when people are snooping around.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Hey, he's right by one thing. This Frame guy was
snooping all right, came in through a side door to
the planet roots.
Speaker 7 (28:57):
Well, I'll grant you. The young man was apparently the
type who nosed into everything he could what was.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
Worth snooping for. I understand you don't keep oversized payrolls
around anymore, Miss Rankers.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
Of course, not not since the robbery last year. Insurance
company won't allow it. Oh you're insured now, Why wasn't
he before? Not completely that robbery where the other watchman
was killed and Joe here wounded cost me the tidy
sum of seventy five thousand dollars. So if you think
this was none of my business, if you think I
(29:28):
can sit around and be kind hearted like Dewey has
been doing it, okay, okay, I get the idea. Thanks
very much, of course, whatever you wish.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
He sure the High and mighty eighty.
Speaker 7 (29:42):
Hey Joe, what did you mean people had been snooping around?
Speaker 20 (29:44):
Huh?
Speaker 7 (29:44):
What you said a minute ago? I don't mean Jerry Frame,
because I'll believe it about him. I don't know.
Speaker 23 (29:50):
Sure there's been something going on, but I don't know
what past week or two since my relief's been sick
two or three times, somebody's broken him, but I couldn't
catch him.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Better be more specific than that, Portland. Nobody's going to
get the drop on me like I did on Wales.
I got a gun, I use it. This plant was
robbed once, mister show Wales. He yelled to see what
the noise was, like a sucker. They slugged him and
they killed him with his own gun. Same one got
me in the leg, showing me I come running like
a sucker. Toe But nothing more.
Speaker 23 (30:14):
I'm telling you I'm not Joe. I know, Hitters, that's
what's wrong with being it. Maybe Ankers is right, Maybe
I ain't got no business working here. Sorry, I shot
that man tonight.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Okay, okay, come on Courton, we got some records.
Speaker 7 (30:37):
Yeah, hello, Sazon Lessen. I got the gun. Eh what gun?
Speaker 2 (30:42):
You're way behind times Portland here is going to sign
a statement he killed the man.
Speaker 7 (30:46):
What are you talking about? Let me see that property
of JFF Dewey Company, please special Hank Wales gun. I
worked on the other case last year, Lieutenant sort of
one of the ballistics men.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
He thinks it'll check.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
Out the gun that killed Hank Wales a year ago,
the one that was taken away from him at the
time of the payroll robbery. That said, Sir Holy might
explain why that gerial frame was snooping again. We found
this gun on the top drawer of the desk and
frame's apartment. First lead we've had in a year. I know,
I know the way, Johnson. All I want to know
is whether that old robbery and murder was committed by
(31:17):
one man or by a gang one man, and I
bet it was an inside job. Maybe it was prime himself.
He was snooping again tonight, wasn't he? He had the gun,
didn't he? Wait, Hey, wait a minute, where are you going?
You're figuring it's a little wrong Johnson, But straighten out
for yourself. Meantime, I'm going to see a girl about
a date.
Speaker 18 (31:42):
You already knew.
Speaker 17 (31:43):
I had a date with.
Speaker 7 (31:44):
Jerry Frame, sure, miss Barkley, And you probably kept it too.
Speaker 18 (31:47):
No, No, I didn't.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
Honestly, you saw him tonight before he was shot, didn't you.
Speaker 21 (31:51):
No, After I left you at the office, after I
went home, I was dressing, he phoned from Well, how
should I know? He just said something awfully important came up,
something he'd been working on, and he'd be delayed.
Speaker 18 (32:03):
That's all except.
Speaker 17 (32:06):
Well, except all right, except what Well he.
Speaker 18 (32:10):
Did say he was going to buy me a mink coat.
I thought he'd been drinking or was trying to be funnier.
Speaker 7 (32:16):
Miss Barkley. Do you think Jerry Frame killed that watchman
and stole that payroll last year?
Speaker 21 (32:20):
What?
Speaker 18 (32:22):
Oh, of course not.
Speaker 7 (32:23):
I agree with you. A man who's committed a perfect
crime doesn't keep the murder gun around for a year
in practically plain sight for people to find.
Speaker 18 (32:30):
Then what are you driving here?
Speaker 7 (32:31):
But a guy who knows he and ambitious and tripping
onto old evidence might have such a gun in his desk?
Speaker 18 (32:35):
You mean Jerry knew who the robber was?
Speaker 7 (32:37):
Well, how else can you explain it? Who do you
know that calls at this time of night?
Speaker 18 (32:43):
Well nobody?
Speaker 7 (32:45):
You want me to be your last caller? Come on,
get in there?
Speaker 18 (32:48):
What ames to Valentine?
Speaker 19 (32:49):
Wan?
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Go on?
Speaker 7 (32:50):
Where's a piece of paper in a pestle?
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Never mind?
Speaker 7 (32:52):
I see something? Just staying there and be quiet when.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
It's Bodley.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
I'm sorry I didn't hear.
Speaker 7 (33:11):
Oh, how almost the doing Valentine?
Speaker 6 (33:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 21 (33:14):
Me?
Speaker 7 (33:15):
Your receptionist doesn't seem to be here. Well, I I
thought she might be upset at y'all. She knew this
boy who got killed? Yeah, I know, what are you
doing here?
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Same thing you are?
Speaker 7 (33:28):
You knew she had a date with him tonight? No, No,
I just thought she might be able to help tell
us what frame was up to. But if she was
actually planning to be with them, was actually in on whatever?
You I don't really know that. I just thought there's
a note here.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Hmm.
Speaker 7 (33:43):
Oh, I didn't pay any attention, just sitting here waiting
for the show Range sixty two one fifteen AM. Well,
uh yeah, but it's not her handwriting. It might be
his mate. She here, Valentine, She's not mixed up in
liny of this. I'm waiting to find out. I mean, well,
it's Anchor's company now, he's the one responsible. But I
know my personal this is all up to the police,
(34:04):
not us. Anyway, Sure, sure run along if you want. Yes, Hey,
I guess I might just assure you do that.
Speaker 17 (34:13):
Mister Valentine. Valentine, what do you think you're doing in there?
Speaker 4 (34:18):
Be quiet?
Speaker 7 (34:19):
Lenny, I'm thinking.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
Let me out of here.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
I say things you said, there is any there be quiet?
Speaker 7 (34:25):
I said, you're running away. You've already left for the airport.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
You're crazy?
Speaker 6 (34:31):
Did that?
Speaker 7 (34:32):
He let me out of Have a nice time in
the waiting room, Happy landing, See you.
Speaker 23 (34:35):
Later, mister Valentine. How could I recognize anybody when that
stick up happened last year? I didn't see anybody to shoot.
That wasn't even a shadow like there was tonight. Just
gun flashes and gnawse y'all.
Speaker 7 (34:56):
I got you out of jail, didn't I? So trust
me Brooks you, mister Rank has got that message, all.
Speaker 17 (35:01):
Right, he's convinced that Angela's running away. That's what you mean.
Speaker 7 (35:04):
That's what I mean. Now here we are, here's the airport.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Big dumb, trigger happy. That's what those cops called Joe.
Speaker 7 (35:11):
Don't hey, well, hey, you got men watching outside. J'n sure, sure,
I'll play ball with anybody's.
Speaker 17 (35:16):
Supposed to be running away on the one fifteen plane.
It's still half hours so from what.
Speaker 7 (35:21):
May I asked missus Brooks for you to figure out.
Speaker 16 (35:24):
The obvious lieutenants. Joe here is nervous, he's trigger happy.
Speaker 7 (35:27):
You should hear what the police doctor had to say
about him. Come on, come on, let's move out of
the life. Sure call me anything ouse.
Speaker 17 (35:33):
Oh wait, Jim, I meant that somebody took advantage of you.
Don't you understand?
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Sure?
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Sure I can figure that far Here's robbery.
Speaker 16 (35:39):
Was an inside job. Then whoever did it must have
been scared to death. What gerald frame was finding out?
Speaker 2 (35:44):
And what nicer way to handle frame than to trick
him and a going down to the planet at night
like throwing them in a bus? Saw only how was
he tricked and he getting killed as a.
Speaker 17 (35:54):
Power What difference does that mean?
Speaker 7 (35:56):
The important thing is that everyone knew that Jerry Frame
was going around with Angela Barkley. The one who committed
last year's crime and who sent Jerry to be killed tonight,
must think that Angela knows who he is.
Speaker 4 (36:06):
Now, that's the trap.
Speaker 7 (36:07):
That's what we're doing. I hope for your sake it
prays over.
Speaker 17 (36:10):
But you know yourself.
Speaker 16 (36:11):
Frame was the kind of nosey ingratiating man who could
have been tricked into using his nose once too often.
Speaker 17 (36:16):
Anybody, mister Anchors or mister.
Speaker 23 (36:17):
De mister Dewey is an awful nice man. He couldn't
have had anything to do with Robiney's own.
Speaker 7 (36:22):
Sure, sure, skip it, Joe, come on, we better stay
out of sight. Let's go over there by that hangar
and wait, George, the plane's leaving.
Speaker 18 (36:45):
The police didn't do a thing.
Speaker 17 (36:46):
They didn't stop anybody. The planes leaving.
Speaker 7 (36:48):
Yeah, sure, good bear.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Trap, it just didn't work.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Us.
Speaker 7 (37:00):
Smell of anybody. Anchors are still at his hotel.
Speaker 16 (37:03):
Anybody try to send miss Bartley a message or a
telegram to the plane.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
We need five men checked every taxi, every family waving
goodbye everything.
Speaker 17 (37:10):
So she really could have left on that plane and
no one would have tried to stop.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
We're right back where we were a year ago, trying
to solve that original robbery.
Speaker 7 (37:17):
Okay, Johnson, So if you haven't got evidence, you make
up some. Eh. Oh, there's a bright idea I just did,
don't you get in?
Speaker 17 (37:26):
What are you talking about? George?
Speaker 7 (37:27):
Well, if it was either Anchors or Dewey, this stunt
tonight would have scared the daylights out of them. Okay,
so it's not either one of them. Oh that's just peachy.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
Now.
Speaker 7 (37:36):
I was hired to solve a personnel problem. Okay, here
I go. If you've been so trigger happy, Joe ever
since last year, Dewey would have had to fire you,
no matter how nice a guy is.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
What do you mean?
Speaker 7 (37:47):
So all right? You haven't been You just got nervous recently.
I don't get you, Valentine wild man with a gun.
It's an easy enough act to put on, sure, Joe,
who could get Gerald frame down to the plant easier
than yourself? Just phone up and asked him to come
down for a talk. And who else knew that I'd
already tangled with you, that you'd be jerked off that
(38:07):
job fast, that there wouldn't be any more golden opportunity
to get rid of nosey frame.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
You're crazy. You don't know what you're talking about.
Speaker 7 (38:12):
When you pull the original crime, when you shot the
other night watchman last year and even shot yourself on
the leg and make it look good, you.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Slipped up, didn't you.
Speaker 7 (38:19):
You lost the gun or it disappeared, so you had
to stay on, had to keep your job. It was
the best cover anyway. And then finally you discovered who
had the gun. It was framed and he was breathing
close to figuring it all out, so you got rid
of them.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Well, I'll kill you for saying that.
Speaker 7 (38:37):
Yeah, sure, shoot first, ask questions afterwards, but who else
could have staged both jobs so they looked right? Oh
never mind, I know we had to prove the other
guy's innocent to make you guilty. Only you did it
yourself too. You know the gun?
Speaker 2 (38:51):
What's that?
Speaker 25 (38:52):
What about what gun?
Speaker 7 (38:53):
In the original hold up, you said you didn't see anybody,
and they slugged the other watchman and took his gun
and shot him with it and shot you in the
light with it. Well, so what well in the dark,
all those flashes you chatter about, it makes you so nervous.
How can you tell what gun did the shooting unless
you were pulling the trigger?
Speaker 26 (39:10):
Are you?
Speaker 4 (39:11):
That's so busted?
Speaker 7 (39:14):
Sorry, but sometimes it is better to shoot first and
ask questions afterwards. He's all yours, Johnson.
Speaker 17 (39:20):
Georgeohn's even gonna wait to see what he says.
Speaker 7 (39:22):
God me, Brooksy, I still got a girl locked up
in a closet.
Speaker 15 (39:25):
Remember, you know, every evening it gets dark a little earlier,
and you're probably doing more driving during the twilight hours,
the time when most accidents occur. So don't take chances
(39:45):
with a dirty windshield. Clear visibility means extra safety. Next
time you're out driving, stop in and let our car
savers clean your windshield quickly and expertly. It's just one
of the many extra services at standard stations and dependent
Chevron gas stations where they say and mean we take
better care of your car.
Speaker 17 (40:21):
George, you mean Angela didn't have anything to do with it.
Speaker 7 (40:23):
That's right, angel Joe Portland ran strictly a one man crime.
That was all it was to it.
Speaker 16 (40:28):
I wonder if mister Ankor's guest, wonder if that's why
he hired you.
Speaker 7 (40:32):
I doubt it. Here this is the speech she lives
on No Brooks. The anchors might be a little high handed,
but I got over being sore at him a long
time ago, just like Dewey, perfect me a nice guy
who hates to fire people. That's all.
Speaker 16 (40:43):
It was a pretty neat stun of Joe's, wasn't it
pretending to be nervous.
Speaker 17 (40:47):
He could shoot anybody and it'd be called justifiable manslaughter, or.
Speaker 7 (40:50):
Even build up the legend by trying it out on me.
Might know who we are.
Speaker 16 (40:54):
Oh, George, it's so late. Why don't you just give
that key to the doorman there and ask him to
go up and unlock the door.
Speaker 7 (40:59):
Oh I don't know. Personnel problem, uh Frankers, of course.
Speaker 17 (41:03):
Angel Her name is Angela, isn't it Yea?
Speaker 4 (41:07):
But she can scarcely fly out no wings that I noticed.
Speaker 18 (41:13):
You call me angel sometimes you did that?
Speaker 4 (41:16):
Not sure.
Speaker 7 (41:19):
What's the matter.
Speaker 18 (41:20):
She's not that good looking, George, I don't have any
wings out here.
Speaker 7 (41:28):
Hey, you dorman, catch go upstairs and open the door
with you. I'm busy here. I got a little personnel problem.
(41:56):
The Night's Adventure of George Valentine has been brought to
you by Standard Oil Company of California on behalf of
independent Chevron Gas stations and Standard stations throughout the West.
Robert Bailey has starred as George, with Virginia greg as Brooksy.

next week, same time, same station two. Let George do It.
Speaker 15 (42:38):
Let George Do It, as heard overseas through the worldwide
facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service. At this very moment,
in another part of the world, people are listening to
their radios. But these people must first draw the blinds
and keep the volume turned low. They are the people
who live in Soviet dominated countries, and they are listening
(42:59):
to Rage Free Europe as it keeps alive their hope
for freedom.
Speaker 27 (43:04):
Now, Radio Free.
Speaker 15 (43:05):
Europe needs your dollars to help truth fight communism. Send
your contribution to Crusade for Freedom. Empire State Building, New

Let George do it on Classic Radio Theater with Wyatt
Cos coming updates. Will stay out on the West Coast
for the Whistler.
Speaker 13 (43:54):
There is a defense against radioactive fallout during enemy attack.
Speaker 7 (43:58):
Get to a shelter, immediately, stay there until local officials
advise you it's safe to leave.
Speaker 13 (44:02):
Be prepared.
Speaker 5 (44:04):
We continue with Classic Radio Theater with an episode of
The Whistler from eighty years ago September twenty fourth, nineteen
forty five. The Man who Died twice.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Signal Gasoline Signal the new gasoline you can prove is superior.
The Signal Oil Company and your neighborhood signal dealer bring
(44:38):
you another curious story by the Whistler tonight, The man
who Died Twice. I am the Whistler, and I know
(45:04):
many things.
Speaker 6 (45:05):
For I walk by night.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of
men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes,
I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak.
It wasn't until a year or more after his second
(45:28):
death that the public learned the facts in the case
of Stash Wilk and made him famous posthumously as the
man who died twice. That was an interesting story in itself,
but it was really only a prologue to a bigger story,
one which the public never knew in full. Four people
were involved Stash, his brother John, his lawyer Ben Meadow,
(45:51):
and his girl Edie Sheldy, But the real central character
in the story was an oil drum containing four hundred
thousand dollars in currency buried near a lonely highway. Yes, Dash, well,
if you hadn't been stupid, if you hadn't killed that
bank guard, you might have made it. But there's no
use crying over spilt milk. Is there.
Speaker 6 (46:13):
You're in the state penitentiary.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Now, in the death cell, forty eight hours from the
gas chamber. All you can think of is the four
hundred thousand buried in the oil drum near the highway.
Safe only you know where it is, Stash. Maybe that's
why Ben Maddow, your lawyer, is trying so desperately to
get you a reprieve. But listen to reason, Stash, I
(46:37):
tell you we saw the governor. They all turned us down.
It must be some other way. Where's he d I
gotta see it. She's coming with John and my brother.
What's she doing here trying to help? I mean he's
money hungry too, like the rest of you. Please, Stash,
don't you see You've got to tell us where that
dough is so we can put it to work for
you while you'll low down? You didn't you crazy? You's coming?
Speaker 27 (47:01):
Nobody get your smell of that, don't liemousie?
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Yeah, yes, stage, yeah, let me go. Yeah, thanks, that's
striking a tie. They're coming, miss Shelby and your brother
to see it. Well ten minutes, I missed your baby.
(47:24):
Hope you'll miss me too.
Speaker 6 (47:25):
I have, I have.
Speaker 28 (47:27):
It's getting so I figure everyone's got his eye on
the dough, even you. Please, Okay, what's on your mind?
Speaker 6 (47:35):
Johnny?
Speaker 2 (47:36):
I abandon ask him. I just told Ben exactly how
I feel about the dough. Johnny just said, there won't
be no mistakes. You see, there's one thing worse than
walking to that little green room tomorrow. That's walking there
knowing someone else is making free with that four hundred grand.
In other words, John, he doesn't trust us. Right once
I'm out, it's a different story, of course. Of course,
(47:59):
Well that leaves us just one alternative. What's that It's
a long shot, Stash. But that's about the only time
we have left. It'll take money now or later. I
think you'll be satisfied with later. Who the doctor you kidding?
What good can the doctor do me? Let him talk, Stash.
It's this way, Stash, but the right injections, a man
(48:19):
who's been gassed to death can be brought back to.
Speaker 6 (48:22):
Life, brought What are you giving me? What kind of
a double cross is this? Or you're crazy? You some
lacks before you have a god? Here, I'm telling you
a plain fact.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
A man who's been gassed and pronounced dead can be revived,
providing you get into the right doctor fast enough. Say
all right, anyone, Yeah, I'll have one. Thanks, A little
less noise now, huh?
Speaker 6 (48:46):
Yeah? Well, Stash, are you ready to listen to details?
Speaker 2 (48:50):
And how much choice doing? Okay, Jenny, hen listening, But
get this straight, the three of you. I don't do
no talking about the four hundred grand till I'm out
of this pen and figure out how much talking I'll
do if I come out dead.
Speaker 6 (49:10):
Yes, Dash.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
It's enough to make a man think, isn't it, with
death staring him in the face. The guards at the
prison notice the change right away, and the report goes
to the warden that, with a little more than a
day of life left you, you've changed from a surly,
scowling brood into a model prisoner. Meanwhile, Ben Meadow and
your brother John are making preparations.
Speaker 6 (49:32):
And finally, on the morning of the execution.
Speaker 7 (49:35):
What time is it, John?
Speaker 6 (49:36):
Almost five?
Speaker 2 (49:38):
Worry? I told you he's got the schedule. You're sure
of him, positive he's not before we have exactly an
r He goes under the gas chamber at six. Sharps,
where's that longer man outside? We'll get him.
Speaker 7 (49:50):

feel here right in your own, car we call new
signal the gasoline you can prove is. Superior why not

chamber nothing except a feeling of, strangulation the sudden stabbing
(54:20):
of a million knives at your, chest and then, darkness
a limitless ocean of darkness in which you lost all
sense of time and space and. Being then all of a,

post war motor. Fuel that's also Why New signal is
packed with amazing new power and performance that's so immediately.

collected the extortion money from poor, shopkeepers and when, necessary
committed the. Murders, well what's happened To? Gordon about three
weeks ago he disappeared, boom just like, that and nothing's

Since will you think That flynn had something to do
with his? Disappearance?
Speaker 6 (01:24:45):
Definitely gordon was becoming too dangerous To flynn's. Interests the
names were being linked together And gordon was trying to
cut in On flynn's political interests and probably threatened.

Him and you think That flynn Had gordon?

Murdered so sure of that the murdered. PART i, mean
WHAT i do think is That flynn ordered him done away.
With and now he's not so sure that his orders
were carried. Out but why because among those heading the
investigation as To gordon's whereabouts is his erstwhile, partner the
same Mister.
Speaker 14 (01:25:18):
Flynn oh and just what are you planning to do
about all?
Speaker 6 (01:25:22):
This, well if Mister flynn were to receive a phone
call telling him That gordon was still, alive we might
stir up some interesting DEVELOPMENTS i, see particularly if he
were to receive this phone call from The, shadow.
