and it was on this date. In nineteen thirty two,
during the third game of the World Series at Wrigley Field,
Babe Ruth pointed to center field with his bat, and
on the next pitch he had a home run straight
that way. There's some dispute about why he pointed that way,
but Babe Bruth maintained it was not a coincidence.

Speaker 9 (03:15):
And I looked out to center field and I played,
and I'm going to the next pitch, ball might pass

becoming one of the few series to debut in syndication
and be picked up by a major network for prime time,
premiering on this date in nineteen sixty two with its
third host, The Tonight Show starring that Boy from Nebraska,
Johnny Carson. Carson would host the show for nearly thirty

(05:49):
years and to date the longest serving host of the show,
and there'll probably be never never be another one who
will serve that long again, given how the ratings have
never been the same since Carson left. And the theme
written by Paul anka Well and Johnny Carson, although we
don't know if Carson wrote any of it or he

(06:12):
just got put on there, because that happened with a
lot of celebrities when people would write songs for them anyway.

the ambassador to Ireland.

Speaker 8 (07:24):
The former congresswoman going through a nasty and very public
divorce while she was in the cabinet. The move seen
as a way to get her out of Washington, but
Margaret Heckler confirmed in December, and she was seen as
a very effective ambassador. President Reagan moving Margaret Heckler to Iowa, Iowa,
Ireland forty years ago today. Can I be ambassador to Iowa?

(07:49):
Might be a little corny.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
I don't know.

Speaker 8 (07:52):
Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan asserted his innocence as he appeared
in New York for arraiment with seven officials of his
former instruction company on charges of falsifying records for a
one hundred and eighty six million dollars subway project.

Speaker 14 (08:07):
I am outraged and disgusted by the actions and the
obviously partisan timing of the Bronx District Attorney. I have
not seen the indictment, but I can assure you that
it is not worth the paper that it's written on.
My concerns are that my family has to endure this

(08:31):
mindless inquisition and that this not reflect negatively upon the President.
To assure that this matter does not become a part
of the current election campaign. I have asked the President
tonight to accept my request for a leave of absence

(08:52):
without pay, effective immediately, and he has granted my request and.

Speaker 8 (08:59):
All of the defendants, including Donovan, acquitted, after which Donovan

(09:20):
Vladimir Putin became a permanent member of the Security Council
of the Russian Federation. He continues to this day to
have the iron fist in Russia. Supreme Court suspended former
President Bill Clinton from practicing before the High Court on
this date. In two thousand and one, two thousand and eight,

(09:42):
a seven hundred billion dollar financial industry bailout one lopsided
passage in the Senate seventy four to twenty five, but
that after it was loaded with tax brakes and other
sweeteners more pork if you will. And it was on
this date. Back in twenty seventeen, one October in Las Vegas,

(10:05):
a gunman opened fire from a room at the Mandalay
Bay Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, overlooking a crowd of
twenty two thousand country music bands had a concert below.
This person was a survivor. It was nothing like anything
I've ever been through my life.

Speaker 6 (10:21):
This is the scariest thing I've ever been through my life.

Speaker 8 (10:24):
Fifty eight people died, more than eight hundred injured, the
deadliest mass shooting in modern US history to this date.
That was an incident that one of the few that
could not have been stopped by a good person with
a gun unless they were able, unless they had a
rifle with them and could shoot up to that floor,

(10:48):
because they were shooting out a window of a big
mass skyscraper. And it was a sad situation. But again,
a lot of people tried to use that to you know,
make it possible to you know, disarm people who were
good people, so that criminals could be the only ones

(11:09):
with weapons.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
You know.

Speaker 8 (11:10):
That's I know, I shouldn't be political during this show,
but it just irritates me. Okay, Curtis la May passing
away on this date. The General Curtis Lamy was a
vice presidential candidate with George Wallace, author Tom Clancy passing
away on this date, and pro wrestler and politician Antonio Inoki.

(11:34):
He was in the I don't remember what do they
have a parliament? Do they have a parliament in Japan?
Is that what it is? Well, the big legislative body.
He he passed away on this date three years ago today.
Among people born on this date in history who are

(11:54):
no longer with us include Declaration of Independent signer Richard Stockton,
engineer William Boeing, Everett Sloan, Fine radio actor you hear
referred to often. He also was in Citizen Kane, Outlaw
Bonnie Parker, Bonnie and Clive. I'm still not sure whether
the death car is gonna end up, you know some

(12:17):
of those casinos, and I believe this was at Buffalo
Bills on the California Nevada border, and they're closing most
of those casinos for an indefinite period. And one of
those casinos is where they had the car where Bonnie
and Clyde were killed. And I'm not sure they're just

(12:39):
gonna leave it there or if they're gonna take it
somewhere else where it can actually be seen again, okay.
Also born on this date in history, Walter Matthow, wonderful actor.
Also actor James Whitmore. President Jimmy Carter born on this date.

Speaker 15 (12:54):
You have given me a great responsibility to stay close
to you, to be worthy off you.

Speaker 8 (13:06):
Jimmy Carter a wonderful man, a man with a great
heart when you look at some of the things he
did outside of office. Inside of office, he was probably
one of the least effective presidents in years, but a wonderful,
good hearted man. We lost him last year. He made
it to one hundred. Also born on this day, Jimmy Bourn.

(13:28):
On this date in nineteen twenty four, Roger Williams, the
pianist Autumn leaves great hit. Born on this date in history,
actor Tom Bosley. You remember him from Happy Days. Actor
George Papard Dumbledore born on this date who actually had
a hit record. Yes, MacArthur Park by Sir Richard Harris.

(13:52):
Richard Harris born on this date from the original Nutty
Professor Movies Silencers, the Poseidon Adventure actress Stella Stevens born
on this date, and the sole musician composer Donnie Hathaway.
All those folks born on this date in history, and
they have shuffled up this mortal coil.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Hi, this is Jeff Foxworthy.

Speaker 16 (14:14):
It is now time for the birthday announcements.

Speaker 9 (14:17):
The following people are now officially older than dirt?

Speaker 8 (14:21):

one hundred? Dame Julie Andrews ninety years old today from
Seventh Heaven. Stephen Collins is seventy eight from National Lampoon's
Vacation LBJ, The Early Years, King Penn Independence Day, Randy
Quaid three quarters of a century seventy five. Super model

(14:46):

Speaker 7 (14:57):

Speaker 17 (14:58):
Got a lot of compliments on this, plus it's not

Speaker 8 (15:04):
From The Hangover, Zach Gallipanakus is fifty six, Captain Marvel

Speaker 18 (15:30):
We're the four Freshmen and we just want to say happy.

Speaker 7 (15:33):
Birthday to.

Speaker 8 (15:38):
And we'll get started on this first day of October
Wednesday edition of Classic Radio Theater by going back eighty
six years October first, nineteen thirty nine, William Johnstone as.

Speaker 19 (15:51):
The shadow Shadow.

Speaker 20 (15:56):
In a recent study, anothered traffic expert estimates that inadequate
highways and resultant traffic jams cost the American economy billions
of dollars every year, and suggests that the cost of
modernizing our roads would quickly be regained in time saved.
Discussing motor accidents, this same expert suggests that legislation may
be needed to curb the speed of our powerful automobiles

(16:18):
before they ever leave the factories. This is a controversy
of question on which the experts disagree, but all traffic
experts agree on one thing. Common sense cannot be legislated
into the automobile driver. He has to learn it by himself. Anger, bravado,
and the spirit of competition often are expressed on the
highway by excessive speeding, disregard of traffic signs and signals,

(16:41):
and other risky maneuvers. Psychologists sum it up by saying
that careless drivers are emotionally immature. Put more bluntly, it
means that careless driving is kid stuff.

Speaker 8 (16:52):
Okay, we'll roll on here on this Wednesday, Classic radio
theater William Johnstone starring as The Shadow eighty six years
ago today, October one, nineteen thirty nine, The Night Marauders.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
The Shadow knows.

Speaker 11 (17:44):
And now for another thrilling adventure of the Shadow. Today's
story The Night Marauders. The Shadow, mysterious character who furthers
the forces of law and order, is in reality Lamont Cranston,
wealthy young man about town. The Shadow uses his hnotic
power to cloud men's minds so that I cannot see him.

(18:04):
Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margot Lane, is the
only person who knows to whom the unseen voice of
the shadow belongs. As the scene opens in our story,
it is night, dark, still night, and we find ourselves
the unseen observers of two vague figures, moving almost silently
across a window sill and into a darkened bedroom where

(18:26):
lies asleep a beautiful girl at peace with the world.
Then out of the still.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Oh, oh, hello, Dary.

Speaker 7 (19:08):
What.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
Well what happened? Are you all right? But who was it?
A short, powerful man? A monster? You're dreaming, daring? Yes,
they ransect your whole room. That sounds like the night marauders. Muggo,

(19:30):
I'm coming right over as soon as I call Commissioner Western. Now,
don't worry, I'll be right there. Goodbye. Come in the mind, muggle.
Are you all right?

Speaker 3 (19:47):
Yes?

Speaker 21 (19:47):
I guess so. My throat's a little bruised. Your throat, yes,
one of them had his fingers wrapped around my neck.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
It's horrible.

Speaker 21 (19:54):
I guess that's what's known as getting fingerprints the hard way.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Now, this is no joking matter, Margot.

Speaker 21 (20:00):
I'm aware of that every time I swallow.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Did you see what they looked like?

Speaker 21 (20:03):
Only the one by my bed, but I could hear
the other one crawling around the room. Oh it was creepy.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
What are the one by your bed looked like?

Speaker 22 (20:11):
Well?

Speaker 21 (20:12):
The best description I can think of at the moment
is Frankenstein's homely brother. He was quite short, with long
arms and a really beast.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Your face, it's an ugly description.

Speaker 21 (20:21):
It was an ugly face.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
That's probably Commissioner Western. I asked him to come over,
Come in, Commissioner.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
Thank you, Christon? How are you, miss Lane?

Speaker 5 (20:31):
All right?

Speaker 21 (20:31):
Now?

Speaker 5 (20:32):
Thanks?

Speaker 4 (20:32):
Oh? Where did it happen?

Speaker 21 (20:34):
Right in here?

Speaker 3 (20:34):
In my bedroom?

Speaker 4 (20:35):
Didn't they take anything of value?

Speaker 21 (20:37):
A few years off my life?

Speaker 7 (20:38):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
Oh tell me just what took place, miss Lane.

Speaker 21 (20:43):
Well I'm a little hazy as to detail. You see,
I was asleep and I was dreaming about punkin pies.

Speaker 23 (20:48):
You what, honest?

Speaker 5 (20:50):
Punkin pies?

Speaker 21 (20:51):
You know the kind of mother never makes Ah?

Speaker 4 (20:54):
Yes, miss Lane, but tell me about your waking moments.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
Don't you like punkin pies?

Speaker 4 (20:59):
I adore all punkin pies, miss Laie. But this is
a police investigation, not a cooking class.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
I listen to your dream later, Margot.

Speaker 21 (21:06):
Thank you?

Speaker 7 (21:06):
Do you mind?

Speaker 5 (21:08):
Sorry?

Speaker 21 (21:09):
Well, I was awakened by the realization that something was
grasping my throat, and it incidentally wasn't punkin.

Speaker 4 (21:15):
Parks, miss Lane.

Speaker 21 (21:16):
Please, I started to scream. The man put his other
hand across.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
My mouth, and then the other man ransacked your room.
Is that right?

Speaker 24 (21:23):
Yes?

Speaker 22 (21:23):
How do you know?

Speaker 2 (21:24):
He ought to know the same. Two nocturnal nimrods have
been driving Commissioner Western and his department slightly insane.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
It's not that bad, Cranston. We'll have them both under
lock and key any day now. Oh, then you know
who they are, well, not exactly.

Speaker 2 (21:39):
Do you even vaguely know who they are? Well, not exactly, Commissioner.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
We know how they're working well, and you know they're burglar, Yes,
we know they're I mean the department always catches up
with crimes. Miss Lane.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Well, i'd like to catch up with these criminals myself. Commissioner,
if you need a running mate, I wishould count on me.

Speaker 4 (21:58):
No, thanks, but I appreciate your offers.

Speaker 2 (22:01):
I see.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
There's just one thing I think you should know before
I leave, Miss Layne.

Speaker 12 (22:06):
Yes, Commissioner, I really do like punk and pie.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Good night.

Speaker 21 (22:13):
Well, there was a nice, chummy little investigation, but I
failed to see that it proved anything.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
It didn't, and Weston's plenty worried.

Speaker 21 (22:20):
Too, Lamond, I don't like that glint in your eye.
Are you going to get mixed up in this?

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Definitely?

Speaker 5 (22:27):
Oh, Lama.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Now you go back to bed, Margot. I come over
in the morning and we'll figure out how the Shadow
can track down the night marauders. Eh, Margaret, you don't
know how fortunate you were last night. What do you mean, Lamont,
I look at this newspaper. Night Marauders turned to murder.

Speaker 25 (22:48):
Murder.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Yes, the body of John Kenyon was discovered this morning
by his valet. He'd been brutally murdered some time before
dawn to day due to the deep bruises on his
throat and the fact that his bedroom had been ransacked.
Commissioner Western admitted that the night Marauders were unquestionably guilty.

Speaker 21 (23:06):
Oh lemnt, it might have been our.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
Yes, Margot, May I use your phone?

Speaker 21 (23:10):
Yes, surely.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
I'm going to ask Weston again if I can work
with him. If he doesn't want me, I'm going to
work on this case by myself.

Speaker 21 (23:18):
You can't tell the Mott. Maybe you'll make your special
deputy or something.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
That's right, he might, Hello, Police Department, I'd like to
speak to Commissioner Western. Please, Commissioner Western, No, no, no, Western,
W E S T O N. You know the head
of your department. Yes, that's it, that's right. Olperator said
he'd try to find him.

Speaker 21 (23:41):
Oh, that's fine. They're supposed to catch criminals and they
can't even find their commissioner.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
Hello, this is Crimeston. Commissioner. I just read about the
night Marauder's latest crime, and I'd still like to lend
a hand in running them up. I think that I could. Oh,
I see you are not running a school for detectives. Eh, goodbye,
nice fellow.

Speaker 21 (24:05):
Did you read this?

Speaker 4 (24:05):
Lamont?

Speaker 21 (24:07):
Henry Burns, an employee of the city, is quoted as
having seen two figures leap from Kenyon's window at about
the same hour that the crime was committed.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
Good, that's something to work on.

Speaker 21 (24:16):
Well, what do you plan to do?

Speaker 2 (24:17):
I wouldn't be surprised if the Shadow paid a call
on Henry Burns tonight.

Speaker 22 (24:39):
Thanks for making sure I got home safely. I guess
you can go now, officer.

Speaker 26 (24:45):
Not until I take a look around your apartment. Mister Burns,
you are so nervous. If I'm out.

Speaker 22 (24:49):
Nervous, How would you like to be locked up all
day in a room the size of a cigar box?
An hour after hour, faced the inquisition of questions? Hammead
at your head?

Speaker 4 (24:58):
Ahna, they were only trying. Would you like it?

Speaker 27 (25:01):
Answer me?

Speaker 22 (25:01):
How would you like it?

Speaker 7 (25:02):
Say?

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Look, mister Burns, you'd better take it easy.

Speaker 22 (25:05):
I'll be dead before morning.

Speaker 26 (25:07):
No one's going to kill you, mister Burns, not with
me on the job. I'll be right downstairs.

Speaker 7 (25:13):
Good night.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
Wasn't read.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
Well?

Speaker 2 (25:23):
Mister Burns?

Speaker 22 (25:25):
Who said that?

Speaker 2 (25:26):
I did? Well?

Speaker 4 (25:28):
Where are you? Who are you?

Speaker 2 (25:29):
I have the shadow shadow?

Speaker 22 (25:34):
I've heard of you, but I can't see you.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
I cloud men's minds so they cannot see me. Oh
he did that to me? Huh, yes, I'll see him,
mister Burns. I haven't come here for any other purpose
than to act as your friend, to help you.

Speaker 22 (25:49):
Please believe me somehow, I don't believe your shadow.

Speaker 2 (25:52):
Good Then tell me what you saw last night.

Speaker 22 (25:55):
Oh I can't, I can't.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
I tell you. I just can't. Why.

Speaker 22 (25:58):
I was hoping that you'll be different from But it's
just the same series of questions, What did you see?

Speaker 4 (26:03):
What did they look like?

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Wait a minute, mister Burns, I came in with you
and the officer that escorted you home. You told him
you expected to die. Yeah, to die.

Speaker 22 (26:13):
Yeah, that's right. I expect to be killed. I'm not
afraid to die.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Since you're not afraid to die, mister Burns, Why shouldn't
you tell me what you saw last night?

Speaker 22 (26:24):
I hadn't thought of it that way. As long as
you're gonna get me anyway, why shouldn't I tell? All right,
I did see something. It was horrible, shadow horrible.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
I tell you don't be afraid.

Speaker 22 (26:36):
Well, I I was walking home. I passed the apartment
house where the murder was committed. I heard a weird
call and unearthly sound from nowhere. I turned and saw
two figures that appeared silently from a second story window.
They slipped to the ground without a sound and hurried,
half running, half walking. Disappeared in the shrubbery across the
street at the edge of the park. One of them

(26:58):
was short, massive, unbelievably horrible to see, and the other
in his hands as what as that.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
Look at your peece huh? A piece of rock? With
some paper tied to it.

Speaker 22 (27:07):
I know, I know it's the Night Marauders. I know
it's from them.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
Read it, Take it up and read it.

Speaker 7 (27:13):
All right?

Speaker 22 (27:15):
All right, dead men and wise men say nothing. You
have the choice of being either dead or wise sign
the Night Marauders, dead or wise.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Put the note on the table. All right. It's the
first clue, and from that very scrap of paper the
police may be able to get fingerprints A hundred leads
to the solution of these crimes.

Speaker 22 (27:39):
Maybe you're right, Maybe the police could find the Night Marauders.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
Hurry, take it. Take it to the police. That note
may save my life.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
I will. And now, mister Burtons, I suggest that you
try to get some rest. The police are on. God,
you're safe enough here.

Speaker 22 (27:55):
I guess you're right. You go out this way, good night.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
Good night, rest, well, rest well, h.

Speaker 22 (28:14):
Dead men and wise men say nothing.

Speaker 28 (28:38):
Mister hold holo, no answer, Come on, help you bread
this luck? Okay?

Speaker 29 (28:48):
Oh here we are well.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
Oh oh, look at the poor devil. Look at lords
Is he dead?

Speaker 27 (28:57):
Let me look at the body.

Speaker 3 (28:58):
I can't stand quite.

Speaker 7 (29:00):
Still breathing a little?

Speaker 27 (29:01):
We quite stand back, mister, can you hear me?

Speaker 30 (29:08):
Can you hear me, the Shadow, Shadow, the Shadow. Oh,
he's the guy behind the Riddle of the Night Marauders.

Speaker 4 (29:34):
Murphy Murphy. Yes, Commissioners, I want a list of every
piece of jewelry that the Night Writters have stolen from
their victim, Yes, sir, and then ever turned up the
pawn shops. Yet no, so not a piece. We've been
checking every fence for months. All right, then we'll.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
Yes, good morning, Commissioner. I believe you're looking for me
for the murder of Henry Burns.

Speaker 31 (29:57):
Who's this, the Shadow, Commissioner, the Shadow, Yes, Buffy, have
this call trace at once, Get every squad car and
towering action right, sir. Now where what did you say,
Shadow Commissioner.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
I know you're having this call trace, but I called
to tell you that I was in Henry Burn's apartment
last night. While I was there, a stone was thrown
through the window. It had a note attached to it.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
We didn't find any note.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
I know you didn't. I have the note. I'll send
it to you tomorrow. I'd better hang up now. You
may trace this call faster than I anticipate. Goodbye, Commissioner.

Speaker 4 (30:36):
Wait, wait, Commissioner, VI trace a call. Yes, squad cars
on the way. No, why not? The car came from
the phone booth here in headquarters, the call here in headquarter.
Where did you get him? No, sir, there was no
one in sights. Well this is great. The shadow is

(30:56):
now insulting the department where the department own Nichols Park's
beautiful to.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
Night, isn't it, yester mon?

Speaker 5 (31:14):
What good does it do me?

Speaker 2 (31:15):
No, Margo, don't feel alarmed.

Speaker 21 (31:17):
I'll behave you know the mond I made a dreadful
mistake last night, And well I just remembered it wasn't
the kind of punkin pies that mother made at all.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
What wasn't the kind of punkin pies my dream?

Speaker 21 (31:30):
It was apple dumplings.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
That wasn't that silly of me?

Speaker 21 (31:34):
Whatever made me think it was punk?

Speaker 2 (31:35):
And head driver, I watch up of my cars cutting
off the road.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
I believe you, mister Crichton.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Commissioner Western say you gave us a scare.

Speaker 21 (31:47):
Oh I'm sorry, Commissioner, I was just telling the mont
it wasn't punkin pie at all last night? It was
apple dumpling.

Speaker 2 (31:53):
What was which I dream, commission ate last night?

Speaker 3 (31:56):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (31:57):
Yes, well I recognized you to riding along and I
thought i'd give you a little tip on detecting mister Cranston.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Really, and what's that while.

Speaker 4 (32:06):
You're driving around the park or a breath of fresh
air enjoying the sunset after a good dinner and.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
A very good dinner. It was two, Commissioner.

Speaker 4 (32:15):
I'm driving around of the park because after analysis, I
discovered that all of the crimes of the night marauders
have taken place within a block of the park. What
do you think of that?

Speaker 2 (32:24):
Where is that what you call a clue? Commissioner?

Speaker 4 (32:28):
Is that what I call it? It's the first significant
fact we've on Earth?

Speaker 21 (32:33):
Do you really think that the shadow was guilty?

Speaker 3 (32:34):
Commissioner?

Speaker 4 (32:35):
What else am I to think he tried to misleaders
today by calling up about some phony letter. And furthermore,
I think he's right here.

Speaker 7 (32:43):
In this park?

Speaker 4 (32:43):
Oh no, Commissioner, Yes, sir, that's what I think. And
I have a hunch will pick him up tonight. Well
I must be going by.

Speaker 21 (32:54):
Well, maybe he's gonna beat you to the punch.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
After all, maybe you've got something there the month. What
is the masa? You're white as a sheep?

Speaker 21 (33:07):
Did you hear that weird call?

Speaker 4 (33:09):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (33:09):
Well, what about it?

Speaker 21 (33:10):
That's the call I heard last night. I heard it
while that man still had his hand on my throat,
and when he heard it, he looked up and then
let go immediately.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Are you sure it's the same call?

Speaker 29 (33:20):
Oh?

Speaker 21 (33:20):
The month? Do you think I could forget one the
tail of that awful experience driver?

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Stop here?

Speaker 7 (33:25):
Yes, sir, it sounds.

Speaker 21 (33:26):
As though it came from over there.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
But the zoo. We're going to walk a bit. We'll
be back shortly. Very good, sir, All right down, you
get Manga, all right and Margo. On second thought, I
think you'd better go back and stay in the carriage.

Speaker 21 (33:41):
All right, Oh, but be careful a month please.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
I'll be as quiet as a shadow.

Speaker 32 (33:56):
Get back, ready, get back? You want me to clean
your cage, don't you there?

Speaker 2 (34:01):
That's better?

Speaker 32 (34:03):
Now you'll stay over there where you belong. Freddy, You know, Freddie,
you're a very interesting playmate. Oh you're a little rough
once in a while, but once you figure it out,
you're quite like a human. We've been friends for a
long time.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
A Freddy.

Speaker 32 (34:20):
Yes, I remember when you first came here.

Speaker 7 (34:22):
Yes, you were just a little fellow.

Speaker 32 (34:24):
Now you're a full grown gorilla, the finest specimen in captivity.
Why when you came here you weren't any bigger than jocko.

Speaker 14 (34:39):
A.

Speaker 27 (34:40):
You could only.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
Read Freddy, you'd laugh too. Do you know what the
papers said.

Speaker 29 (34:47):
Today, fred.

Speaker 32 (34:49):
They said that the Shadow killed that man last night.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Yes, silly fools.

Speaker 32 (34:56):
If the Shadow had the strength to do what you
did to that man, what folds? Why should he get
credit for those murders? Oh, but it's just as well
until you get more experienced, Freddy. Yes, yes, then no
one will take fred for our way. You know, Freddy,

(35:18):
we can rule this whole city. And do you know how,
Freddy flu Field?

Speaker 2 (35:27):
You know?

Speaker 4 (35:27):
Now, what's the matter with your?

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Matter? Shut up? And he shut up? There? Now, what's
the matter with you? What was that? It's the shadow?

Speaker 7 (35:36):
Shadow?

Speaker 2 (35:37):
Where are you here in the cage with you and
your gorilla?

Speaker 32 (35:41):
Oh you're the man nobody can see.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
What are you doing here? I've been standing here listening
to you talk to your friend, Freddy. You've heard everything
I said. Yes, we keepers always talk to our animals there.
They are more.

Speaker 32 (35:55):
Quiet when they hear our voices. It doesn't make any
difference what we say, just so long as we talk.
Now what I said meant nothing? Shadow nothing at all.

Speaker 23 (36:04):
No.

Speaker 32 (36:09):
Now, Shadow, you and Freddy are locked alone in the cage,
and he knows you're in the cage. You may be
able to hypnotize my mind, so I can't see you.
But you can't do it to a gorilla, can you.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
You're right? I can. Oh. The Shadow isn't afraid of Freddy.

Speaker 32 (36:33):
Isy, No, but you will be, because in a minute
I'm going to tell Freddy.

Speaker 2 (36:38):
To kill you. But first.

Speaker 32 (36:41):
I thought maybe you'd like to ask me about the
Night Marauders.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Shadow.

Speaker 32 (36:47):
May I present the Night Marauders Little Jacko, the monkey
who is in the cage down at the end, Freddy,
the gorilla, and their trainer and brains.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
Joseph Shankroll.

Speaker 32 (37:01):
Yes, it's a pleasure to at last be able to
introduce us, even if it is only to a doomed man. Yes,
tell me, Shadow, Will you be visible after Freddy kills you?

Speaker 2 (37:19):
That remains to be seen. But tell me more about
your crimes Joseph Shancro.

Speaker 32 (37:25):
So you are not crimes, they are adventures. You're not quiet,
Freddy Quiet. It's not quite the time yet, Shadow. I'm
going to be a great power. Power through fear is
my motto.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Why did you turn to murder.

Speaker 32 (37:43):
Oh, I was tired of taking jewelry. I wanted a
new adventure. I have all the jewelry I need right now,
hidden beneath you, beneath the cage you're standing in. But
now shadow comes the newest to my adventures.

Speaker 33 (37:59):
I am going to see you die.

Speaker 32 (38:03):
Yes, you know too much to me, said, I'm tired
of talking to you.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Oh, this is guy to be fun.

Speaker 32 (38:12):
There's body of Musyay, now's the time.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
Kill kill Paddy?

Speaker 32 (38:18):
Kill ready?

Speaker 2 (38:21):
Do you hear me? Kill him?

Speaker 32 (38:23):
Ask him to that?

Speaker 2 (38:24):
Kill him? Well, Joseph Shancro, your power is gone. Your
gorilla will no longer do what you want.

Speaker 4 (38:33):
Wray, you hear me?

Speaker 2 (38:35):
Chill him? He will not obey you anymore. Joseph Shankro
belongs to me. I too know and understand animals. Freddy
won't kill me.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
Yes he will, Freddy? Chill him? Do you hear me?

Speaker 32 (38:48):
I'm coming in there with a whip. I have put
you the ribbons, Paddy. Then you'll know who you're master in,
you fool.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
Don't open the.

Speaker 32 (38:55):
Door, stay out, stay away from him, and you learn
your master's here.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
Don't hit him?

Speaker 7 (39:01):
Then you chill when I tell you you feel.

Speaker 11 (39:06):
I'm gonna tell you what.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
You know.

Speaker 4 (39:10):
You know who You'll do what I say?

Speaker 32 (39:15):
Cheery, cheer, nor.

Speaker 4 (39:24):
Stay like ms plain say back. Are you all right?
Ms Lane?

Speaker 2 (39:32):
Yes?

Speaker 21 (39:32):
Who commissioned Western? Did you fire those shots?

Speaker 7 (39:34):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (39:35):
I did. I standing behind that trigger just a second.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
What are you doing?

Speaker 4 (39:39):
I am shouting the case door. These shadows in here.

Speaker 7 (39:43):
Uh, this is a.

Speaker 4 (39:44):
Great moment for me. The gorilla is dead night marauders
and no more. And I have at last caught the shadow.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Not quite good, Commissioner, the shadow.

Speaker 4 (39:55):
I was right here. I heard everything that went on
between you and Joseph Jancro. I know you not guilty
of murder, but still there are a lot of things
I want to know about you, and you won't get
out of that cage until I find them out.

Speaker 2 (40:06):
But I am out, Commissioner. I came out when the
gorilla escaped, and if you don't believe it, you'll find
a bullet in the back of the gorilla that didn't
come from your gun. Better luck next time, Commissioner Chris Layne.

Speaker 4 (40:18):
If you were not here, I'd say a few things
that no gentleman should ever say.

Speaker 21 (40:22):
Well, I don't mind if you do say them. But
let me first say thank you for saving my life.

Speaker 4 (40:26):
Well, I did my bit, but I'm afraid that some
of the thanks belongs to the Shadow, and so help me.
Someday I'm going to find out who he is.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
All right, Yes, Lamon, I heard shut Heaven said he
didn't hurt you, did he?

Speaker 21 (40:38):
No, Laman, he was dead before he got near me.
The Commissioner saved my life.

Speaker 2 (40:42):
Well for that, Commissioner, I shall never be able to
thank you enough.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
Hell Sir, you weren't in on the kill Lamont. In
case the Night Marauders has been solved, and Lamont, except
for a very bad break, I would have been able
to introduce you to the Shadow.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Really, Commissioner, I can think of nothing more interesting than
to have you in produce me to the Shadow.

Speaker 11 (41:11):

Eighty six years ago, October one, nineteen thirty nine, The
Shadow on Classic Radio Theater with Wyat Cocks. Up next,
we'll go to nineteen forty nine for an episode of
the Adventures of Develop Marlowe.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
We live in an age of specialization.

Speaker 7 (42:10):
We work in it too.

Speaker 34 (42:12):
The legendary jack of all trades is lost out to
the master of one too often, However, twentieth century employers
find it difficult to find the highly trained, highly skilled
workers they need. Like any problem, however, theirs will yield
to thought and consideration. A physically handicapped worker, for example,
may not be able to do every job well, but

(42:32):
if he's trained to do the one job you want done,
you can rest assured he'll do.

Speaker 7 (42:36):
That job well.

Speaker 34 (42:38):
A physical disability is not, and need not be, a
job disability. Very often, a handicap will even add to
the worker's efficiency. Where excessive room noise is a factor,
a deaf employee may prove more efficient than his colleagues.

Speaker 7 (42:51):
Weekdays, call the local office of.

Speaker 34 (42:53):
Your state Employment Service and hire the handicap to fill
job openings in your organization. You will find the state
Employment service listed in your telephone directory.

Speaker 8 (43:03):
Classic Radio Theater with Wyatcocks continues with an episode of
the Adventures of Philip marlow starring Gerald Moore from seventy
six years ago October first, nineteen forty nine, The Tail
of the Mermaid.

Speaker 23 (43:16):
Get this and Get it straight. Crime is a sucker's road,
and those who travel had wind up in the gut
of the prison of the Grave. This started with a
wreck and went from there to double murder over seventy
five thousand bucks worth of glitter that nobody got me
ind because I found out just in time what was
fishy about? The Tale of the Mermaid.

Speaker 17 (43:36):
From the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime
fiction comes as most famous character in the Adventures of
Philip Marlow Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe,
we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Tale of the Murma.

Speaker 23 (44:14):
Ninem thirty. I was still in my office, tucking in
the loose ends on a report while I listened with
half an ear to the fabric of city sounds rising
from the street below. Fabric ripped suddenly by tires clawing concrete.
A shattering crash that followed brought me to my feet.
It was a traffic accident, and a bad one. I
ran to the window, but it had happened around the corner,
out of sight for my office, so I watched others

(44:36):
run for it, and remembered grimly that every thirty seconds,
somewhere in the country a thing like that happened, and
one out of every sixteen minutes was fatal. I wondered
it would have been chewed up in a chromium meat
grinder this time, as I listened to first the police
and the emergency ambulance, and finally the scavenger truck cleaned
the wreck off the street. After that, I went back

(44:58):
to my report again and tried to forget about it.
But an hour later that same accident came back into
my office.

Speaker 24 (45:04):
Mister Marlow, Yeah, this is Corey Riggs. Uh.

Speaker 23 (45:07):
Yes, Miss Riggs.

Speaker 24 (45:08):
I'm a nurse at the Warwick Emergency Hospital.

Speaker 7 (45:11):
Huh.

Speaker 24 (45:11):
About an hour ago a man named Stanley Ott was
brought in and he's been calling for you for me.
He was badly injured in an automobile accident on Kowan
on his way to your office.

Speaker 23 (45:20):
Wait a minute, who did you say this one.

Speaker 24 (45:22):
I'm the nurse assigned to mister Ottapha hospital. I just
got off Duriena. I had to wait until I was
relieved before I could call you.

Speaker 23 (45:28):
I see, well, look, miss Riggs, I'd like to help
in any way I can, but it's.

Speaker 2 (45:31):
Nice to gollo.

Speaker 24 (45:32):
Mister Ott gave me two hundred and fifty dollars and
told me to call you. Yeah, I know, but and
he said that I should give you two hundred and
keep the fifty for myself.

Speaker 23 (45:40):
Oh fine, Now I get clients by proxy. I beg
your pardon nothing, I'll be right over, miss Riggs. I
didn't know anyone named Stanley out, and I felt a
little like an ambulance chaser. But I was only fifteen
minutes and getting the emergency hospital. As I walked up
the ambulance ramp of a smart looking brunette came toward me.

Speaker 24 (46:02):
Mister Morrow, I'm Corey Riggs, the nurse who called hello.

Speaker 23 (46:06):
Can I see him now?

Speaker 24 (46:06):
It wouldn't do any good, you see. He went into
a coma a few minutes after I.

Speaker 23 (46:11):
Caught Oh it's too late, is Eddie.

Speaker 24 (46:14):
Let's move away from the door.

Speaker 3 (46:15):
Shall we?

Speaker 24 (46:15):
Sure you see mister Marlow before he went into the coma,
art wasn't rational.

Speaker 23 (46:20):
He was raving about what sort of things about you
and a girl?

Speaker 24 (46:24):
Oh as near as I could make out, she's supposed
to meet someone tonight at two o'clock and collect seventy
five thousand dollars.

Speaker 23 (46:31):
It's quite an assignment. Who's the girl?

Speaker 24 (46:32):
I don't know? All Odd said was something about a
plaid coade is identification.

Speaker 23 (46:37):
Laid code. Huh any idea? What he wanted me to do? Chaperone?

Speaker 7 (46:40):
Maybe?

Speaker 4 (46:41):
No?

Speaker 24 (46:41):
He kept pleading, stopper, stopper, she can't do it. So
I'm sure that he wanted you to prevent this girl
from keeping that appointment for some reason that seems absolutely
imperative to him.

Speaker 23 (46:52):
Where was this two o'clock meeting supposed to take place?

Speaker 35 (46:54):
I have no idea.

Speaker 23 (46:55):
Oh fine, So it boils down to this girl we
don't know in a plaid code is meeting someone we
don't know what a place we don't know at two am.
It's a man who wants me to prevent it is
in a coma and can't talk. Didn't he say anything else.

Speaker 7 (47:07):
Miss Rings.

Speaker 24 (47:08):
He just kept saying, you've got to help me, Marlowe.
It's life and death.

Speaker 36 (47:13):
You know.

Speaker 23 (47:13):
We can stir up an awful hornet's nest, poking our
noses into seventy five thousand bucks worth of business we
know nothing about. I doubt that we can do any
good anyway, because we don't have enough to go on.
If he said anything else to even point in the.

Speaker 24 (47:25):
Right Marlowe, Well wait a minute. He mumbles something once
about a constantine.

Speaker 23 (47:32):
Constantine.

Speaker 24 (47:33):
Yes, it's u pier.

Speaker 23 (47:34):
What is it a boat?

Speaker 24 (47:35):
I don't know, but at least it's a.

Speaker 22 (47:37):
Lead, isn't it?

Speaker 23 (47:38):
M anything else?

Speaker 2 (47:40):
No?

Speaker 23 (47:42):
Okay, where can I reach you?

Speaker 24 (47:43):
I'll be at my quarters Cresview five seven eight one, five.

Speaker 23 (47:46):
Seven eight one, and keep track of Stanleyout's condition. Will
you if he comes out of it, talk to him.
We've only got three short hours. I'll call you, Corey.
I felt a little weird as I left the hospital
because I was traveling on strictly secondhand information as to

(48:09):
what had gone on in a delirious mind. But in
spite of that, there was still enough coherence in what
Corey Riggs told me to make a case. My first
stop was a phone booth and a call to the police,
but I found out from the accident report that Stanley
Out was thirty, unmarried, small time lawyer in an LA
resident with a clean police record. My next call was
the hobbomaster's officer, San Pedro.

Speaker 2 (48:32):
Constantine.

Speaker 37 (48:33):
Nope, don't remember, no visial for that name. SA just
a minute, I'll love her up in the registry at
she Constanta Constant Constantine. Only one listed is a former
mastered schooners ungle Pirates Point near Monterey in eighteen seven days.

Speaker 23 (48:53):
A little before my time. Not the one, eh, not
the one. So I tried the.

Speaker 2 (49:02):
No fishing boat called Constantine on this coast. Master.

Speaker 23 (49:06):
I was followed by a check of yacht Harbord long
Beach negative and the call of the pleasure boat anchorage
is Santa Monica.

Speaker 2 (49:13):
No Constantine registered here, sir.

Speaker 23 (49:16):
After that a long future reconnaissance of the waterfront from
one end to the other. It left me one solid
hour later, out at the end of a tottering almost
abandoned concessions peer in venice, swearing and blind frustration at
the black seating ocean below. I will select.

Speaker 27 (49:34):
He ain't thinking of jumping in. How are you a pow?

Speaker 2 (49:38):
Hey?

Speaker 27 (49:39):
You looked like you lost your best friend.

Speaker 23 (49:42):
I did buster me. I was sunk with a Constantine
in eighteen seventy Coyzantine.

Speaker 27 (49:47):
You know him too, eh?

Speaker 23 (49:49):
Him?

Speaker 22 (49:50):
You mean Constantine's a guy. Sure, pal, there's a shock there.
Wait till the beacon light comes around again.

Speaker 2 (49:57):
Yeah you see see that?

Speaker 23 (49:59):
Well, I'll be Prince Constantine chevnov accoletais promised and medium
personal consultant by appointment only.

Speaker 27 (50:06):
Yeah, but that's a fake, all them guys. He knows
everybody around he even if the me for one bucket
or something. But he's a genuine Russian prince. Hey, hey,
where were you going?

Speaker 23 (50:20):
I have a look. Prince Constantine chevnov could be my boy.

Speaker 27 (50:23):
He who wouldn't want you losing around here?

Speaker 23 (50:26):
That's too bad? Does he live here?

Speaker 27 (50:28):
Yeah, in the back. He runs his pitch in the
front where all in the green curtains are.

Speaker 23 (50:34):
I suppose he always leaves his door unlocked.

Speaker 27 (50:38):
Hey, that's kind of funny.

Speaker 23 (50:41):
Yeah yeah, but that'll be a light switch here sometimes.
Oh yeah, now let's see what?

Speaker 7 (50:49):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (50:50):
Oh catch why mister.

Speaker 23 (51:00):
As a little warp rad darted through the door and
scampered away into the darkness. I went over the body,
face up on the cheap, gaudy carpet at the seance room.
It was about thirty five in a substantial gray business
suit stained red in front where the bullets had gone
in as wallet was missing, there was no other identification
on him. His gray snap brim hat was spilled a

(51:21):
few feet away, so I picked it up to look
for initials and found instead a small file card stuck
into the sweatband type. To the top was the heading
the mermaid onna Otis vanoen only relative Evelyn van O
and niece mermaids Stole November twelfth, nineteen forty eight. Insurance
paid in full in ink Vano and died August nineteen

(51:43):
forty nine, and under that in pencil Konstantine Chevna Venice
Pier and Louis Paradise, nine thirteen Seacrest Road, Pacific Palisades.
It took twenty minutes to find nine thirteen Seacrest, And
when I stopped and got close enough of what I
saw through an open window made constantine trap, I just
left because reliable as a post office by comparison. It

(52:05):
was a miniature Egyptian temple, exotic and dainties seconding lushness
of red velvet and yellow silk. And in the center
of the room was a bloated little man balancing a
long cigarette holder in one hand. Well, he's simple into
a honeycolored French.

Speaker 2 (52:17):
Phone in the other arrangement.

Speaker 23 (52:19):
I moved up quietly until I could hear.

Speaker 38 (52:20):
Him sentimental agreement. That is right, every and your uncle
Otis and I were the best of friends for years. Well,
thank you child.

Speaker 2 (52:32):
Where are you now?

Speaker 39 (52:33):
Oh deservertoil good good? I advise you to stay there
until a few minutes before two. And aha, you will
not forget to wear a plaid coat, just to be
sure I won't make a mistake.

Speaker 40 (52:47):
Careful now, sudden nights like this, gun gone off. Upset mister,
they find some interesting inside.

Speaker 23 (52:54):
Conversation about the mermaid.

Speaker 40 (52:56):
Probably, oh oh, I bad to drop that one. But
because I'd bump you for a nickel to say nothing
to seventy.

Speaker 23 (53:02):
Five g's, I don't talk things over with punks. I
reserve it for the head man. Go do something about it, okay,
but I.

Speaker 40 (53:09):
Will go on move under the doorn inside, Mister Paradise
gets some kind of kick out of stepping on big
guys like you.

Speaker 23 (53:18):
The gopher face shoved his automatic into the smaller my
back and marched me inside, where the air was thick
with cheap incense. The bloated little king with a long
cigarette holder. It stepped out. He came back fast. When
the gopher called mister Paradise. He stared at me from
across the room, and his nostrils flat for an instant,
and he simped again and sidled toward me. A gopher
dug in my spine with his gun.

Speaker 40 (53:38):
Well, now what is this foodie snopper? Mister Paradise caught
him outside picking in the window.

Speaker 4 (53:44):
Oh, it is a bad night for snoopers.

Speaker 23 (53:48):
Who are you name? Smallow?

Speaker 2 (53:50):
And the business snooping?

Speaker 40 (53:52):
He knows about the mermaid, mister Paradise.

Speaker 41 (53:54):
He does, does he? How much do you know? Speak ups?

Speaker 23 (53:59):
She's got a fish tail instead of legs.

Speaker 40 (54:01):
You dare to joke and just stand here and take
a big man you asked for.

Speaker 2 (54:06):
Make a move and I'll drop you.

Speaker 38 (54:08):
I know what you are, Marlowe, but not how much
you have found out. Now tell me because the next
time I slap you, it will carry more weight than
my bare hand.

Speaker 23 (54:18):
I promise you you have company, Paradise.

Speaker 38 (54:21):
No, you keep this babboon under control, routie, I will
answer the door.

Speaker 42 (54:27):
Oh friend, nice, have a nice.

Speaker 4 (54:31):
How far do you think you can go with my reputation?

Speaker 29 (54:34):
Do you want to get me hanged.

Speaker 38 (54:36):
What is the matter, Constantine?

Speaker 35 (54:37):
You are upset, upset, I'm out of my mind with
a shock, and such a stupid thing for you to do.

Speaker 41 (54:44):
What are you raving about?

Speaker 23 (54:45):
He found that body on his front room floor, right, Constantine.

Speaker 35 (54:48):
Exactly precisely. And what is more, eye did not put
it there all the places in the world. Why did
you pick this one?

Speaker 7 (54:56):
Paradise?

Speaker 2 (54:57):
Who is this? This stranger here?

Speaker 38 (55:00):
If you would close your mouth and open your eyes
more often, Prince Constantine, you would not be the nervous
wreck you are. This is, mister Marlowe, another snooper.

Speaker 7 (55:10):
Another one.

Speaker 2 (55:11):
But listen to me.

Speaker 35 (55:13):
It's better if we quit. It's better if we don't
try it tonight. It's out of hand.

Speaker 41 (55:17):
I don't like it now. We should get away and
come back next.

Speaker 4 (55:20):
Year and do it.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
You jellyfish, There nothing to worry about now.

Speaker 38 (55:24):
Insurance investigators often work in pairs, Is that not soul?

Speaker 23 (55:28):
Marlow You're pitch round man. You don't need any help
from me.

Speaker 38 (55:31):
You are so right, Rudy, and I caught the first
of your place content. Now we have the second one here.

Speaker 2 (55:38):
That is all there are. The danger is over. It's
clear ceiling for you.

Speaker 7 (55:42):
But what about that cateaverory.

Speaker 35 (55:43):
You had your audacity to leave lying in myself give
me Constantine.

Speaker 23 (55:48):
That was a necessity. I am sorry.

Speaker 41 (55:51):
Now is.

Speaker 7 (55:53):
Just going all the time?

Speaker 2 (55:54):
Yeah? Awful?

Speaker 38 (55:56):
And think all the champagne caviar with my last strongle
off you can buy with the mermaids.

Speaker 41 (56:02):
I don't care, just to bracelet.

Speaker 38 (56:04):
But at the same time, it is seventy five thousand
dollars worth of diamonds in platinum.

Speaker 35 (56:08):
Okay, Paradise, I trust you. Now we go on my gaso, yesso,
And mister Paradise, what should I do with the big
boy here?

Speaker 23 (56:22):
Yeah, you're kind of leaving a loose end around, aren't
you fatting?

Speaker 2 (56:25):
If I had the.

Speaker 38 (56:26):
Time, marlow I would beat the arrogance out of you
a little chunk at the time.

Speaker 41 (56:31):
Ruddie.

Speaker 38 (56:32):
Yeah, you've got no initiative, but you do have imagination,
so use it.

Speaker 41 (56:37):
Good buy marlow.

Speaker 17 (56:50):

Speaker 2 (57:33):
Listen carefully, here's the address.

Speaker 4 (57:36):
It's EB.

Speaker 17 (57:41):
Now with our star Gerald Moore, we return to the
second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Tale
of the Mermaid.

Speaker 23 (57:58):
When Louis Paradise has at the door, snarled the suggestion
that this henchman used his imagination and disposing of me
and left in the lockstep with the white Russian screwball.
I got the point, But even if I'd missed it entirely,
one look in the brother Rudy's eyes would have done
the trick. There were no pupils, just slits of lethal
viciousness windows to his warped little mind where I could
practically see the montage going on that ran from ancient

(58:21):
thumb screws by candle light up to a generous beating
by street lamp with brass nuts. I felt a cold
not grow in the pit of my stomach as Rudy,
with a cannon in his hand, pointed at my head,
started toward me, and from someplace outside I got a break.
Two romantic cats, Rudy spun told the sound. One chance
to accustomer.

Speaker 4 (58:41):
Ruddy and you miss.

Speaker 23 (58:44):
Mall thlow your head off, not to night, gentle soul,
give it me. I don't want you to hurt yourself
until we've had a.

Speaker 3 (58:48):
Chance to talk.

Speaker 23 (58:49):
That's it, now, light on. You know there was some
reason why I like cats their voices. Okay, Rudy, you've
had enough rest. Now let's get back to business.

Speaker 4 (58:58):
Come on, get up, we're gonna talk.

Speaker 42 (59:00):
Wait, holdly, please, no reason for any more rough stuff.

Speaker 2 (59:04):
I'll cough.

Speaker 23 (59:05):
That's better. But I did paradise in his highness head
for the ganas doo. Where is it?

Speaker 29 (59:09):
I don't know.

Speaker 23 (59:09):
Come on, you said there was.

Speaker 4 (59:10):
No reason for rough that remember now?

Speaker 23 (59:13):
Yeah, yeah, I remember that. That's something I never heard of.
Unhappy coincidence, Rudy. It's one thing I'm interested in heah, wait,
there must be something else. You want to know, something
mel I could tell you the day.

Speaker 2 (59:25):
Hey, Hey, what are you gonna do?

Speaker 23 (59:27):
You mean you can't tell Rudy it's funny. All it
takes is a little imagination. With Rudy out of the way,
I started through the place looking for all important answer
to what was the Ganas doough. But twenty minutes of
turning drawers and closets inside out revealed nothing more exciting

(59:48):
than Lowie Paradise's address book, first names only, and the
picture of a girl named Toodles, who belonged to the
Roaring twenties and by this time should have caught a
death of coal his sister, no doubt put no lead
on the ganasdo so, on the slim chance of my client,
Stanleyott might already be back in this world and able
to help, I got outside into my car and drove

(01:00:09):
to the first drug store we're after checking the phone
books under everything from bazz to bath houses for a
gnasdo and getting no place. I called Corey Riggs at
the nurses home.

Speaker 24 (01:00:18):
No, Marlo, Stanleyott's still unconscious. I just talked to the
night nurse on his floor. They expect him to come
out of it soon. Uh why what happened?

Speaker 23 (01:00:27):
Oh it's too much to explain now, Corey. But that girl,
the one in the plaid code. I found out that
her name's Evelyn Van. Oh, and then she's staying at
the Surf Hotel. Now see if that much checks without
when he comes to will you?

Speaker 9 (01:00:37):
Oh?

Speaker 23 (01:00:38):
Also there's a diamond studded item called the Mermaid, which
accounts for that seventy five thousand. He mentioned a Constantine
and the pier. Now equal a phony Russian prince who
runs a spook palace out on the old Venice Pier.
Now you got all that? Uh huh good Now, look, honey,
listen real hot before Rot passed out, did he buy
any chance say the word ganasdo gonsdo? Yeah?

Speaker 24 (01:01:00):
No, what does it mean?

Speaker 23 (01:01:01):
I don't know. I think it's the name of a place.

Speaker 24 (01:01:03):
Oh have you checked the phone books?

Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 23 (01:01:06):
Yeah, it's no dice Cory. Also I checked one, mister
louis Paradise, so you might mention Marlow.

Speaker 24 (01:01:11):
Marlow, Wait a minute, Well there's a girl here, one
of the nurses who's trying to tell me something. It's
the Canasto Marlo, Wait a minute, she knows something about
it here, it's it's Rosemary.

Speaker 2 (01:01:23):
You talk to her.

Speaker 44 (01:01:24):
Hello, Hello, You want to know what nasdo mean? Yeah,
when it's Russian like parshla maya noda, So well, what does.

Speaker 23 (01:01:33):
It mean in English? Rosemary?

Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
Fast?

Speaker 23 (01:01:34):
Please is important?

Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Well?

Speaker 44 (01:01:36):
That means let's go to my place. Nasdau's the word
for nest selda like cozy of parkmand cottage.

Speaker 23 (01:01:44):
My place nest.

Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
You sure that I'm positive?

Speaker 44 (01:01:47):
I was an army nurse in the war, and I
spent two years in Germany after the shooting. Park was
over two years a half a block away from the
Russian zone.

Speaker 23 (01:01:56):
That's close enough thanks to a million Rosemary.

Speaker 44 (01:01:58):
I don't mention it, Carra, do it?

Speaker 2 (01:02:03):
Marlow? Yeah?

Speaker 23 (01:02:03):
I think so at any rate, unless I'm way off
basis where both the mermaid and all parties concerned are
going to Rendez who at two am. That's less than
a half hour from now the Prince's place on the pier.
I want to be early, so goodbye, Corey. I'll call
again when I know more. Yeah, and give my everlasting
love to girlfriend Rosemary. She all is show a peach

(01:02:30):
and there was still a few parts missing the way
they're always are. And as I drove fast for the
old Venice Pier, and added as I went along it
came out something like a team of Paradise and Prince
watching McCall it, ready willing and able to pay seventy
five grand for a piece of jewelry that one Evelyn
van Owen now on a Mermaid, which, according to the
data I'd found on the insurance man's body, had once

(01:02:51):
been stolen from Evelyn's late uncle. But I left it there.
When I rear view mirrors had a long grace, said Dan,
that had been tagging me discreetly for three blocks, it's
now being indelicate about it, and closing fast drive. It
was old pal Rudy, And as he came abreast heading.

Speaker 45 (01:03:07):
For me, all right, all right, you're okay, you're rokay, Mac.
Don't you worry about it thing. We'll have you out
of there in a minute. That hey, can't you knock
out that horn?

Speaker 12 (01:03:26):
And knock out the horn.

Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
And says, what do you think we're trying to do?

Speaker 36 (01:03:29):
Me?

Speaker 22 (01:03:30):
Ain't so we should get my hand past his preaking hood.

Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
You know.

Speaker 7 (01:03:34):
Oh oh that's better.

Speaker 23 (01:03:36):
Hey, hey, Cabby, what I hit?

Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
Well?

Speaker 4 (01:03:39):
In the order of their appearance.

Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
Make your car into a telephone pole, and then.

Speaker 23 (01:03:43):
You went to the advantage board.

Speaker 22 (01:03:45):
Yeah you're sure, lucky bounced off the car, personal load
you down plenty.

Speaker 12 (01:03:49):
Oh hey, here comes the ivy role.

Speaker 30 (01:03:52):
Not for me.

Speaker 23 (01:03:53):
I'm all right, Hey, come on, Kebby, help me out
of this. Were the sure, and that's what we're trying
to do.

Speaker 45 (01:03:58):
But don't you worry. The ambulance ain't for you. But
a guy that sideswiped Jen and tried to get away.
I seen what happened, and I went after him and
we cabbed. He turned into a dead end, no less
trying to shake me.

Speaker 2 (01:04:09):
Who is he?

Speaker 23 (01:04:10):
A mess?

Speaker 2 (01:04:10):
But I guess he'll live?

Speaker 23 (01:04:11):
All right?

Speaker 2 (01:04:12):
Hey, what you got against you?

Speaker 23 (01:04:14):
Anyhow? Make just my life? Listen to your cab? Still
all right?

Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Sure to someplace you gotta go.

Speaker 23 (01:04:18):
There is the old Venice concessions, pier my friend, and
the sooner the better come on. Maybe my head against
the dashboard was exactly what I needed, because right then
and there, the method of Rudy's handywork made me think
of an angle that I neglected almost completely. My unconscious
client had not wanted me to get the Mermaid or

(01:04:38):
the seventy five thousand bucks, but to stop Evelyn from
keeping herondevoom, which at this point I figured could mean
but one thing. It was exactly two o'clock from the
cab slamed to stop near the pier. I piled out
and ran out of the empty fog, damp and planking
that led the Prince Constantine check Nothing but mist moved
over the pier. No unusual sound broke the pattern of

(01:04:59):
water noises, but I thought momentarily that I was still
in time to prevent what stanleyout somehow knew was going
to happen. That Louis Paradise and his eccentric sidekick intended
to get the Mermaid from Evelyn, but payoff and only
one one way. I ran to the rear of the

(01:05:20):
Chakron Stilson, got close to the half open door where
I could see in here and found out just what
I'd expected, and the storeroom spread out and very still
on the oil soak planks that were a makeshift floor
with a lifeless form a girl who, according to the
plaid Kochy wall, was the late Evelyn van On and
kneeling close to a gun in one hand. The sparkling
mermaid and the other as her execution on Louis Paradise.

(01:05:43):
Next to him his number one boy, Prince Konstantine Chevnov
not very happy.

Speaker 38 (01:05:47):
Foot was stupid, yes, seventy five grand stupid. How would
you have preferred that I paim is ven noon in cash.

Speaker 41 (01:05:57):
I had to kill her, yes, yes, yes, but the
gun so much noise. We can't afford to attract that tender.

Speaker 23 (01:06:03):
Two cops is on hand, I should say not, don't try.

Speaker 41 (01:06:06):
And the mermaid the face between the balls, Oh.

Speaker 23 (01:06:15):
It's in the water. You have no shame.

Speaker 41 (01:06:18):
Yeah, ye, it's a shame. We did so much, worked
so hardly.

Speaker 23 (01:06:26):
Yeah, killed so often, and I run for it, johanness
run no.

Speaker 7 (01:06:33):
Paradice is dead here without paradise.

Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
I am not so brave.

Speaker 23 (01:06:39):
You keep quiet, don't make a sound. You have no
we got company?

Speaker 46 (01:06:45):
H pardon me? Can you please tell me where Louis
Paradise can be for?

Speaker 23 (01:06:51):
And slowly paradise there? Who are you?

Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
Then?

Speaker 23 (01:06:55):
On and on the woman who was supposed to sell
the Mermaid to Paradise.

Speaker 46 (01:07:01):
That's right. But on my way over here, just after
I left my hotel, somebody struck me, knocked me out,
took my cop there, and my purson.

Speaker 23 (01:07:11):
Ran your purse with a mermaid, no doubt. Yes, and
that miss Fano and makes this angle shooter here, Yeah,
very dead, Nurse Corey Riggs. M let's get out of here.

Speaker 27 (01:07:39):
So there's nothing to worry about in this manner. What
Stanley's going to be?

Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
All right?

Speaker 4 (01:07:43):
I'm so happy.

Speaker 23 (01:07:45):
Why is it women always cry when they're so happy.

Speaker 27 (01:07:47):
I don't know, but it's effective. Well, I'll run along now, goodbye,
bye dog.

Speaker 46 (01:07:54):
You know, mister Marlowe, when I was in the Stanley's
room with the doctor, stan said he didn't lose control
with his car at all when he had that accident
in front of your place.

Speaker 23 (01:08:03):
He was run off the road, I grace Sedan. I
know because I had the same treatment. It was one
of Louis Paradise's henchman, Rudy. Where's your car, honey.

Speaker 46 (01:08:12):
I'll walk yet, just outside the front door.

Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
Tell me.

Speaker 23 (01:08:16):
Did I tell you why Rudy roughed him up?

Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
In a way.

Speaker 46 (01:08:20):
You see, I told Stanley about the deal with the mermaid,
and he thought it all sounded a little phony.

Speaker 23 (01:08:25):
I can't understand why he's a lawyer, you know, legal
type mind.

Speaker 46 (01:08:30):
He said meeting anyone at two in the morning was ridiculous,
so he investigated as much as he could because he
was worried about me. We're engaged now.

Speaker 23 (01:08:40):
I never would have guessed, and he.

Speaker 46 (01:08:42):
Found out that mister Paradise was a fence and Stan
said that probably he never intended to give me the
seventy five thousand dollars for the mermaid at all, that
they intended to kill me.

Speaker 23 (01:08:52):
Here we are tell me why did you get in
touch with Paradise in the first place.

Speaker 46 (01:08:56):
It was just following Uncle Otis's instructions. He gave me
the mermaid when he was dying, and he told me
if I wanted money, to sell it only to a
mister Paradise, but not to mention it to anyone.

Speaker 23 (01:09:05):
Your uncle fake the robbery, collected the insurance money, and
then let you sell the mermaid to offense.

Speaker 7 (01:09:09):
Huh.

Speaker 23 (01:09:10):
Just lucky for you that nurse Corey Riggs was clever.
She put together just enough of voters is gibberish to
know that there was something good to be had, and
then got me to unravel it for her, and she
got killed taking my place when she tried to collect
your seventy five thousand bucks.

Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
Yeah, oh, here's my car.

Speaker 23 (01:09:29):
Well, Evelyn, for a little while you were a rich woman.
Now it's all gone. How do you feel well?

Speaker 46 (01:09:37):
I'm alive and love.

Speaker 23 (01:09:40):
Yes, well that answers my question. Good night, baby, and
good luck. When I left the hospital, I wanted back
to the old Venice Pia and Prince Konstantine Gnasdo. Was

(01:10:02):

Hirst where Did steve come into?

Speaker 2 (02:10:16):
This he did the.

Speaker 4 (02:10:17):
Killing then what About. Lucky lucky was the man behind the,
throne so to. Speak lucky wanted to cut in on
The duke's, customers so we had The duke's winners. Killed, steve,
however did the actual killing and got most of the
money for his. Reward but when The duke caught on To,
Steve steve killed him and double Crossed.

Speaker 3 (02:10:33):
Lucky how do you mean double?

Speaker 4 (02:10:35):
Crossed steve planted one Of lucky cigarettes in The duke's.
Astray he undoubtedly had some of them from being associated With,
lucky so he just smoked one half way down and
left it where we'd be sure to find.

Speaker 3 (02:10:45):
It then who shot at you, In Lieutenant riley when
you broke into The duke's.

Speaker 4 (02:10:48):
Room earlier this. Evening that Was?

Speaker 3 (02:10:50):
Steve that Nixt steve was downstairs playing the.

Speaker 4 (02:10:53):
Piano he was there when we left, him, yes and
he was there when we went. Back but in between
he slipped out the back up the fire, escape fired
over our heads as we entered to make us think
the killer was just, leaving and then went back to his.
Piano he thought he had a perfect. Alibi how did
you know that it Was? Steve by the, matches and
the ash.

Speaker 3 (02:11:10):
Tray how could they tell you, Anything?

Speaker 4 (02:11:12):
Patsy how'd you light a? Cigarette? Here here's a? Match try?

Speaker 53 (02:11:15):
It?

Speaker 55 (02:11:16):
Okay, WELL i suppose you'd light the match like, this
light your cigarette and put out the match like.

Speaker 2 (02:11:22):
This.

Speaker 4 (02:11:23):
EXACTLY i look at that match he just. Used m,
h it's only slightly burned at the. END i look
at this match WHICH i took from the, ashtray.

Speaker 3 (02:11:33):
That burned almost all the way.

Speaker 55 (02:11:34):
Down.

Speaker 4 (02:11:34):
Exactly he was used to light a, pipe not a.
Cigarette And steve's a pipe. Smoker he probably smoked as
he talked to The duke before he killed him before
we got, There you, See, PATSY i knew The duke
was dead when we got there this.

Speaker 3 (02:11:46):
Evening if you Knew steve did the, killings how did
you find out About? Lucky?

Speaker 4 (02:11:50):
WELL i felt Sure steve wouldn't dare to do it
without strong. Backing but there was no evidence Against. Lucky
so that's WHY i went to him and told him
about one of his cigarettes being left in The duke's.
Astray that's also WHY i didn't want to take him.
In oh, NO i, SEE i felt sure he'd go
to See steve and give himself away and he.

Speaker 55 (02:12:06):
Did, NICK i just realized what you said a minute.
Ago you said you knew that The duke was dead
before you went upstairs to his office. Tonight how could
you possibly know?

Speaker 4 (02:12:15):
That very, Simple, Patsy steve was The duke's lookout. Man
he used the piano as a. Signal the top key
on the piano was wired to a buzzer that sounded
in The duke's. Room that meant someone was coming. Up
but when we went up, tonight he didn't hit that.
NOTE i watched him, carefully and he didn't hit it
because he knew there was no one alive to hear.
It he hit the wrong.

Speaker 3 (02:12:35):
Note i'll say he hit the wrong note in more
ways than.

Speaker 55 (02:12:39):
One how do you, mean, Passy, well considering that tonight
you've sold three, murders ended the numbers, racket and recovered
the stolen, MONEY i say That steve hit the wrong
note when he tried to fool.
