to deal with today, and we'regoing to get with Bob Bailey in a
moment. But we're going to readsome letters in a moment too. This
is classic radio theater with Wyatt Cockson a Tuesday. No one knows when

(10:33):
disaster might strike. It could comein the form of hurricane, flood,
blizzard, or fire, or byenemy attack. So it's wise to be
prepared for any emergency. It's wiseto take a Red Cross First Aid or
home nursing course. At least onemember of each family should know how to
take care of an injured person.Remember, in time of disaster, doctors,
nurses, and other medical personnel willbe difficult, if not impossible,

(10:56):
to find. So take a RedCross First Aid or home nursing course.
Now, a bunch of comments Iwant to talk about. Let's go back
to Let's see, we're going togo back to the June twenty third episode

(11:16):
of the program where Diana points outthat the Jackmany Public Service announcement on tolerance
is so crucial today. There areriffs among people religion, class, race,
age, income, political affiliation. It makes me fearful to think what
all this leads to a house divided? And you know today it's not just

(11:39):
about one thing. There's so manythings that people are divided about Margaret McNair
pointing out back on the nineteenth wewere talking about Heart a wonderful song,
and Margaret points out that it wasthese Dreams by Heart wonderful song. Nancy

(12:01):
writs going back to the eighteenth, saying, it's hard to believe Hot Nevada
is actually cool. Love your show, but wanted you to know that Key
Luke was not Charlie Chan. Hewas Charlie's number one son. It sounded
like you said he played the partof Charlie. I think I said his
fame was mostly from the Charlie Chanmovies. But maybe I spoke wrong.

(12:26):
And speaking of number one, I'mstill number one most times on the likes
for your show, and I mayhave said that. And if I said
that he was Charlie Chan, Iapologize. Oh, Diana again, Oh,
when we were talking about Barry Manilow, Diane reminds us Barry Manilo's Daybreak

(12:46):
is my favorite song from this remarkableartist. He's still performing, Yes he
is, and he always has beena dynamic performer. And he says your
remarks about Daybreak. The same thinghappened to Frank Hampton, Peter Frampton.
Yes, the album Frampton Comes Alive, shot him out of obscurity after years

(13:07):
of performances that show business and it'sfunny. I'm not gonna mention any names,
but there are some performers that areonly good in the studio, and
they really are. They're only goodin the studio. They go out on
tour and the tours are just yeah. And some of them are smart they
don't go out on tour. Butthere are some artists and Manilow, Frampton,

(13:35):
they did good work in studio, but when they were out on stage
it was amazing. Another one FrankSinatra. I mean Sinatra performed some beautiful
work in studio, but when youput him in front of a crowd,
oh my gosh, it was amazing. Let's see it. And I had
one other one I wanted to touchon here and there wasn't the one here

(14:00):
that I wanted to hit and Icannot find it. Oh it was Nancy
again and Nancy saying, it's funto hear things that my husband and I
remember back when it happened, andinteresting to hear about things that happened before
we were born. My favorite oldtime shows are Crime Listen, especially Sherlock
Sherlock Holmes. My husband's all timefavorite is Tarzan and finding some really good

(14:30):
stuff as hard and Diana also mentionsthe lives of everyday people. Irvin talking
about being sort of a history buffand that's you know. As I have
said before on this show, thegreat part about this radio show that we

(14:50):
have said is this, if youwant the shows, you can go find
the show anywhere on the internet. But what we do here is we deal
with the history of not just thesegreat shows, but of the day and
the date and the shows and thepeople behind the shows. And I thank

(15:16):
you so much for appreciating that. Now, let's seat out to the West
coast of the United States. Andby the way, if you want to
contact us, you can do itthrough our web page Classic Radio Dot stream.
You can also contact us through theYouTube channel. Almost every podcast channel

(15:39):
on your saying, go to that. And by the way, if you're
one of the third of our listenerswho listen to us through Apple Podcasts,
please leave us a note there, leave us alike and tell people why you
listen, what you like about theshow, and you're listening. How you

(16:00):
listen? It helps us to reallyknow what we're doing. And if we're
doing it right, then of courseyou're listening. We must be doing something
right, okay, Bob Bailey,Virginia, Greg seventy three years ago the
West Coast program Let George do It? And this episode is entitled is Everybody

(16:22):
Happy? Personal notice? Jange ismy stocking trade. If the job's too
tough for you to handle, yougot a job for me, George Valentine,
right, full details. Greetings onceagain, mystery lover. Time for

(16:57):
another Let you do an adventure. This particular yarn puts murder on a very
high plane. It's called is EverybodyHappy? And it chiefly concerns a rich
old catu named Lorenzo, who hada fetish for constantly quoting mister ted Lois's
hallmark, namely, is everybody happy? Now? Of course you know that

(17:22):
nobody was. But why this conditionexisted? It is not for me to
tell, but for you to findout. Is everybody frustrated? Madam is

(17:45):
savy? How's that? Professor?Where I come from, we say,
come and get it. Ha different, That's very good, Lorenzo. Sure
I'm learning with that. In yourpipe and smoke it half? How would
that go in? You? Bydoctor Malcolm? Hey, hey, what's
that? No? No, no, no, no, thank you?

(18:06):
No soup for me? Listen tothat still upstairs with his test tubes.
Me by a ignorm. I couldonly invent a rose bush, make a
million bunction, smoke cigar. I'msorry, I'm sorry, Lorenzo. What
once was a doctor's sight his mind? There was nothing like more absent than

(18:26):
present garvage tovit you answered me?Quiet pipe? I think you said something.
Ever mine, it's everybody happy now, he's everybody happy. Well that's
the way you feel like we're backto my garden nowhere. No, no,
of course we are, Lorenzo. You'll just ask it so many times.

(18:48):
That's all I know. I know. Excuse me, but there never
was a place like this, wasthere? There never was? Only kidding
Lorenzo. It's the house of Lorenzothe Great. No, no, no,
we favory. I only want youall to be happy. Besides,
aren't we going to wait for thatbrother in law of yours? No,
no, he is unimportant. Heis not scholars like you are. Patty's

(19:14):
nothing. You don't wait for bread, forget him. Whatever you say.
So there you are, Lorenzo.Everybody's happy. Let's eat. No,
no, wait, Amy, whatI should have noticed I read for dinner
before she finished reading her letter. Now what kind of a letter do you

(19:36):
suppose? A professor of Roman's languagealone, No, it's nothing like that.
Well she blushes. I mean,I mean, it's just when I
was writing, she writes to someone, it gets better and better into every
life. A little please, pleaseall of you. It's no one you
know, I mean, just aman named George Valentine. Now please,

(20:00):
everybody's happy. Let's eat. Youare listening to Let charge do it,

(20:37):
little doc. You can't say much. Certainly a beautiful place, isn't it
the house of Lorenzo. It's goingto be one of the most unusual places
in the world. I think Lorenzomust be one of the greatest men who
ever lived. Well, he madeone of the greatest piles of money.
Oh, mister Valentine, I don'tmean on account of that. But it
is on account of that, isn'tit. There are three of us here

(20:59):
so far, Doctor Merkle, he'sa research psychologist. Lorenzo's going to build
him a laboratory. Later on.Then there's mister Hanson. He's a poet,
a good one, and he usedto have to work in an accounting
office to earn a living, soyou can imagine how much poetry he got
written. M M. How aboutyourself? Well, I've taught romance languages,

(21:23):
but translation is always what I wantedto do. I'm working on Francois
Bion. Now everybody gets a chanceto do what they want. Well,
not quite everybody, miss Brooks.Lorenzo is being very choosy about his guests,
but I guess eventually there'll be thirtyor forty here. Uh huh,
sort of a one man Guggenheim Foundation. Uh. In a way, Lorenzo

(21:47):
says that he always had to workso hard that, except for his roses,
he never had a chance to doanything he wanted. So now he's
giving all of you a chance.Oh he's a little eccentric. Maybe is
everybody happy? He always says,I know people laugh about that slogan he
stole from Ted Lewis, But thenwhy do you want me here? Suppose
Lorenzo would permanently endow me with afresh mystery case every week. He might.

(22:14):
I'm sorry I was trying to befunny. What is it you're afraid
of? Fred? Who? FredJeffries. He's one of those horn rimmed
sort of men. He's a lawyerand Lorenzo's brother in law. Go on,
well, he's been here a weeknow from back east where the company
is he he thinks Lorenzo is crazy. Ah, I see, I'm beginning

(22:37):
to get it voice of reality.Huh. And you're afraid he'll persuade Santa
Claus to go back to the NorthPole. Well, Lorenzo has a great
deal of money. How he choosesto use it is well, I mean
it could cause unhappiness as well ashappiness. Harna, Please don't stack the
cards from me on who's right andwho's wrong. I'm right, mister Valentine.

(23:02):
I'll prove it to you. Crazy, he said crazy. That's just
what he said. Doctor Marcahall, you see this. Fred Jeffreys came here,

(23:23):
oh, maybe a week ago,the same day Nolan left? Who
left? Doctor Nolan a loafer,no good electronics man of some sort,
but a putterer and really not somuch of an authority. I told you
how careful Lorenzo is in picking hispeople to stay. Look both of you.
Yes, yes, we were thelucky ones. We stay. Well,
you stay unless Fred interferes and blowsthe whole idea up right, persuades

(23:45):
Lorenzo not to sink his whole fortuneinto this place. I'm a skeptic too,
mister Valentine. You have thought weare prejudiced that we would persuade Lorenzo
to endow us with his money.Eh. Of course we do, but
we don't persuade with talk of courtorders. Just what do you mean I
was trying to tell you. WhenNolan left, an MD moved in.

(24:07):
Fred brought him. His job wasto see if Lorenzo couldn't be committed to
an asylum. Be one way tokeep him from giving his money away,
wouldn't it. Obviously he found Lorenzowas no more irresponsible than and besides,
you scared the doctor away, Isuppose, Eh, well, you have
quite an imposing list of degrees.H Yes, I did introduce myself.

(24:29):
The doctor left. I think heagreed with me that Lorenzo could never be
judged insane. He persuaded Fred notto bother calling any experts. Well,
kind of a nasty way to tryand stop Lorenzo's little project. Why don't
you believe me, mister Valentine,This freyd wouldn't stop at anything. What
does Lorenzo have to say about it. He's not the kind of man to
talk about such things, and weare and that makes us nasty and suspicious.

(24:53):
I suppose, Professor Ray, butI don't care. Sometimes a woman
can tell things that a man has. No no, no, no,
no no, Amy, We're dealingwith a man, so we'll stick to
the facts here. Sorry, myplace is such a mess, a little
too much equipment for such a smallroom. But here in the desk,
I I have a letter from thedoctor I spoke of, just in case

(25:17):
you doubt what I've said. No, I don't doubt it. I just
don't see what it a mons tohe spitch on the lemp there, Amy,
of course, Hey, what happened? Lights? Lights? That's all
rufuse. I've known there was toomuch drain on the power. Now just
stand still, everyone, Yeah,it wasn't all that happened. It sounded
like a shot. Oh these lights, hurry, Disciver it with you.

(25:40):
And that was a shadows outside.Come on. It sounded to me like
it was a misdirection. Nobody thereAngel. No, No, he's not
in the rolls of that's where healways sits. But he hasn't come out

(26:02):
yet. I guess Roses is athicker man could be hiding not in Roses
Angel, not of those thorns.Besides, I just looked down those paths.
Maybe we were wrong. There's certainlynobody out here now, doctor Malcolm.
I fixed the lights. Resa wasmad because he spilled his cigar ashes
into his brandy. He's all right, of course, and he didn't hear

(26:22):
anything. Everybody is happy. Youknow. Fred has been doing some shooting
almost every day. He goes outinto the woods. And what's the matter,
mister Valentine. Do you think ourimaginations are running away with us too?
Uh? Professor, let me makea couple of phone calls, will
you, and then let me meetthis ogre Fred. So you've made inquiries

(26:57):
about me, and I don't blameyou if you've been talking to the inmates
of this squirrel case for a retirednurse. I just take it easy,
mister Jeffreys. I only wanted toget it straight who you were, vice
president, lawyer, nurse me toan old goat, that's what I am.
Yeah, yeah, I know, and in between you do some shooting
here smell that m has this gunbeen fired in the last few hours?

(27:23):
I work off steam shooting at squirrels, mister Valentine, but scarcely at night.
Okay, okay, but I knowwhat you mean. I heard that
myself backfire. I guess at leastI ran out back and then around front
and did and see any all right? Or I'd skip it. No,
I I don't think I will.You know I tried to railroad Lorenzo into

(27:45):
a booby hatch. That's what youreally checked on? Sure? Why not?
And I find it did but itdidn't work, correct, mister Valentine.
I'm a practical man. To me, it's beside the point whether this
throw your money awayst out of Lorenzo'sis good or bad. I have to
fight it to protect the estate's interest. I'll try anything, but I am

(28:06):
not given to hysteria. Would youmind clearing that up? Sit down?
Sit Lorenzo endows these people for life. Hasn't their interest in it occurred to
you? Hasn't it? Ey?That was a shot out back. I'm
sure it was. Come on,Amy, what oh? I was there

(28:37):
with him. I couldn't you.I couldn't see anything to somebody in me,
get hold of yourself. Lorenzo.Yeah, he's dead, shot at
death, single bullet Brooks, thebig caliber. I guess there was a

(29:03):
gun flesh, but I don't knowwhere it was. Lorenzo was just about
to sit down in that big marblechair. I was walking behind, Professor.
Couldn't you see anybody? Oh,I couldn't see anything. Whoever it
was got away before mink, wouldyou, Amy? Try to remember?
Please? Shartled me so that Icouldn't notice anything. But somebody must have
been standing over here by the entranceto the arbor someplace. Yes, And

(29:26):
the way Lorenzo's allowed these precious rosesof his to grow over where a man
could run down any one of these, say from there, get away?
Well, there might be footprints, mightn't there. I don't see any Have
you searched him, Mister Valentine's searchhim quickly before he can get rid of
the gun profession. He's been causingtrouble for Lorenzo ever since he got Oh,

(29:47):
Amy, stop it. I thinkyou'd better know now that at the
time of Lorenzo's death, Fred waswith me. What no, no,
I don't believe I got hold ofyourself. Please, I've got work to
do. I'll take you're inside. That's a good idea. Lorenzo was such
a wonderful man. Do I calla police church, No, I'll be

(30:07):
inside do it myself. Amy doesn'tlike you much, does she? No?
I don't care. I want toask you a question, Fred,
about Lorenzo's endowing these people for life? What people did you mean, Amy,
the female professor, doctor Merkle, mister Hanson. There would have been
others as time went on, anda good many others. But if you've

(30:30):
been able to make him change hismind, then what well which his money?
Lorenzo could have changed their trust centertaken it away from them again.
And oh but now he can't.That's what you're driving in. Uh huh.
Now you're not a menace anymore,at least of these three. Yes,

(30:51):
with Lorenzo dead, their interest hasbeen protected. Yeah. Yeah,
we have three very fine suspects formurder. You are listening to. Let

(31:17):
George do it. Our adventure willcontinue in just a moment, and now

(31:41):
back to George Valentine. Is everybodyhappy? Those were the favorite words of
Lorenzo Lorenzo the Great, at leastin the eyes of the few people whose
research he was devoting his money,of course, to his brother in law,
Fred the man nobody likes. Hewas Lorenzo the Foolish. But if

(32:01):
your name is George Valentine, he'sjust Lorenzo the dead. And there are
three very fine suspects for his murder. Yeah, that's right, Sheriff and
Stepana. Will you please m yeah, thanks. I have rather good police
around here, I believe all. You've done business with them before. Mister
Hanson. Don't be ridiculous. Youstill don't believe that I didn't hear that

(32:25):
shot. I don't know, butI was in my rooms here. You
can't hear anything from that distance youare alone. Well, of course,
a person doesn't write poetry and tandem, you know. Oh, never mind
the sarcasm. I can't help it, mister Valentine. I'm very sorry that
he's dead. Is everybody happy? You know? To Lorenzo that was more

(32:46):
than Ted Lewis's famous phrase. Heactually believed we were happy. Oh what
do you mean by that? Peoplelike us all want to do something.
The opportunity to do it he gaveus the opportunity, and as I understand
now, you'll all have it forlife. Hmmm, that's the ironic part.
I've been here three months now andit's no good. You know,
it doesn't work out. Look, you don't make sense. Not a routine

(33:07):
oh for end over every evening,Just the same merkle out puttering around me
in my room, Amy in hers, Lorenzo in his big marble chair where
he could admire his roses. Thisis called being happy, mister Valentine.
All I mean is that Lorenzo wasa well intentioned or fool. I was

(33:28):
happy when I worked as an accountant, only had a very little time to
write my poetry. Okay, okay, it's a good sales talk anyway,
it's the truth. Where does thisfall lead? In front part of the
house? Why? Or mister Hanson, If you're not even interested in Lorenzo's
money, then I ought to belooking for his murder or someplace else.
He's not supposed to be your friendof sarcas. But there's no one in
there. Who's doctor Nolan sweet whenhe was here, Valentine, nobody in

(33:52):
there? Huh, you've starting me, Valentina. Fred the villain of the
Peace Oh, shut up, it'sa matter of fact, Nolan hated Lorenzo.
You know, there's nothing that sayssomeone from the outside couldn't be the
person you're looking for. No,there isn't. But Fred, what were
you doing looking for? Mercle Valentine? I can't find him, Mercy.
Well, these are ways deep inhis work at this time of ninety's rules

(34:15):
right, he's not in there.I already looked. I'll try the other
side of the house. Valentine, you have a wait a minute, he
listen, door closely downstairs. I'llsee you later, George, George,

(34:40):
at you Brooks, Yes, comeout just a minute ago. Hemi's all
right now. I saw a light. I thought it was you light one
light. Oh, I don't knownow. It was out by the rose.
Come on, there was a man, I'm sure there was. I
could see his shadow running around theother way out towards the front. What

(35:00):
from the arbor in here, that'swhere the light was. Matches are a
cigarette light. Let me have yours. Lorenzo's body hasn't been touched, George.
Look, somebody's been trampling around overthere where the roses is a pick.
Yeah, look closer. Rangel righton the table here by Lorenzo's chair,

(35:21):
A pocket flashlight, its mirror, pieces of wire, copper wire.
Why wouldn't he take these things withhim? Real tricky mirror too. See
you see here, steel framed tohold it in place? What place?
Well? M the pocket flashlight?Initials Leon, Marc, Yes, speak
was the one I saw? Sure? Sure, this makes sense? All

(35:43):
right? Careful I almost fell overmyself, doctor Merkle. No blood on
his head? Here, help me. He's dead. No, no,
he's breathing, just barely. Thatbrick there, somebody hit him with that
brick. See the blood on it. Let's lift him. Getting back,

(36:05):
and Hannah, don't touch him,Brooks, he stay here with him.
Tell Anton, are you crazy?Whoever did this is right around her,
somewhere right here on the door,Lavers. She'll be all right. The
sheriff's carl come up that driveway inabout one second, cars turning in.
Not right, but the murder rightto the rolls are but Brad step on
it. I'll get the murderer, all right. I'm sure the police have

(36:32):
flashed lights or lantern Never mind them. Their first job is taking care of
Merkle, getting him in a hospital. So he lives, Yes, yes,
of course these stones. What areyou looking for? All? The
murderer will be pretty disappointed if Merkeledies or he lives, I should say
one big blow and figured he wasdead? Yes, but what was Merkell
doing out here by himself? AndI'll be pretty disappointed if he doesn't live.

(36:55):
There's a real mild understatement, Fred, don't you get it? He
was running for help? What yeah? Yeah, that's right. Now.
Here's where the mirror was at fitsSea and just about in line with Lorenzo
or he was shot stepping in frontof his marble chair there. Look,
I asked you about merkelenut Lorenzo.Merkell had a lot of the facts and
he had to play detective. Hewas out here doing the same thing I

(37:15):
am. Only the facts aren't hereanymore. What facts? For heavens,
it's the matter. Listen. Justthe police out in front wasn't no,
it was right close by. Nowyou listened, Fred, Merkell noticed the
same thing I did that first shot? What sure? That's what I'm looking
for on the chair the Yeah, here we are the splendid place. You

(37:36):
mean that first shot was fired herein the same place, Alex. That
way the bullet that is still inLorenzo couldn't have done that. And over
here the roudiby, here's something whatis it? A sh val it's Valentine
Amy. Oh oh there you are. Yeah, the shareff is taking care
of doctor Murkley. Yes, Iknow what's there you're holding? Well,

(37:59):
I'm not sure me. A pieceof black glass filled him maybe? Or
is it red? Yeah? Sureit did have to be an infra red
light or you'd have seen it,wouldn't you, mister Valentine? What on
earth? I didn't see anything?I told you. If there's another possibility,
if there wasn't anything to see butthe man who fired the Amy when
the gun fired that first time ithappened when you switched on the lights,

(38:22):
did the mis take it easy? Both of you? Will? You all
makes sense? Professor? That guywho used to be here, that doctor
Nolan who didn't make the grade andgot sore at Lorenzo. He was an
electronics man, wasn't he? Well? Did he have any equipment? Is
there any of its still around?Equipment? Yeah? Like maybe a photo
electric cell? What you heard me? A photoelectric cell can be used to
do anything from opening your garage doorto setting off a burglar alarm. So

(38:45):
why couldn't it used to fire agun, Mister Valentine, I just don't
understand. I do, Doctor Nolanh At least that would explain the mirror
in copper wire and the black glass, and it would explain what else Merkle
figured out with a short circuit whenyou which the light would have fired the
first shot by accident. Anything thatinterferes with the beam of the cell.
It's current, in other words, could very easily fire a gun magnet releasing

(39:07):
the trigger for instance. No,no, I don't follow you at all.
And then the second time, aftera reload. I guess the gun
fired when Lorenzo stepped in front ofthe beam when he sat down in the
same place he came to every night. Oh but if you can't find the
gun or that sell Thick, Iknow where to find it. Don't worry.
There's only one earthly reason for killinga person with a mechanical contraption,

(39:30):
and that's to set up a perfectalibi. Well, don't look so blank,
Fred, sure, I know howupsetting it's all. Ben Merkel's still
alive, so we can talk. But it's a little ironic too. Isn't
it set up a perfect alibi,Fred, and then get hung by the
fact you're the only person with analibi. Now, let's go upstairs and

(39:52):
take a look at doctor Nolan's room, shall we do you want to bet
that's where we'll find the equipment withyour fingerprints on it. Well, well,
busty, you've only got a coupleof seconds, so make up your
mind. Back to the conclusion ofour Let George do an adventure in just

(40:15):
a moment, right right, yeah, right here, Angel, I'm busy.
Look, the Sheriff's through with doctorMerkle. Now you and the sheriff

(40:35):
meet me upstairs, will you?Oh? Fred, how about it?
You coming? It would have beenso different if you hadn't been here.
Oh sure, I know. Thingskind of got away from me, didn't
they. I suppose you might findthe photoelectric sell upstairs, but I doubt
if you'd find the gun. Ohyeah, didn't get rid of it yet?
Huh No, So things kind ofget away from you too, don't

(40:58):
they? Standstill? Brooks? Youand that was it. I suppose mister

(41:19):
Jeffries was already so desperate after tryingto get rid of doctor dot Sure,
sure, but a bullet, andthe leg just makes him talk that much
faster. You know, I thoughtthat since Lorenzo's money was already in your
name, Professor and doctor Hanson, there was only three angels. If Lorenzo
had enough money to figure on themdying forty or fifty, then there was
plenty left for Fred to try tohang on to by killing him. But
now what will happen? I don'tknow, But after this I have a

(41:42):
hunch the court, so let usdumbin plan go right on through. He'll
still be remembered as Lorenzo. They'regreat, all right, Everybody happy.
It's a wonderful thing to try for, isn't it? Sure? No matter
what kind of answers you get.But if you keep asking a questions long,
don't be so serious, angel. All it leads to is a song
called well when my baby smiles atme? You have just heard? Is

(42:22):
everybody happy? Another Let George DoIt Adventure. Robert Bailey was starred as
George Valentine with Virginia greg As Brooksy, David Victor and Jackson Gillis wrote the
story with music by Eddie Dunsteader. Now this is yours, truly inviting you
to another visit with Valentine when youwill again hear what happens when you Let

(42:45):
George do It? Seventy three yearsago, July second, nineteen fifty one,

(43:16):
Let George do It. I havementioned that this show was a West
Coast show. A number of theshows were edited for broadcast in the East,
taking out the commercial, putting inbridges like you heard with that guy
doing the announcing, and I stilldon't know who that is, but there

(43:36):
you go. Alright. Classic RadioTheater with Wyattcox continues now. Coming up
tomorrow a summer show entitled Too ManyCrooks and it stars Too Many Cooks starring
Hal March, are Miss Brook starringEve Bardon, John Daner, and have
Gun Will Travel William Conrad and Gunsmokeand we'll head to Pine Ridge and see

(43:59):
what's going on with Lomon Abner. But coming up next, Dana Andrews.
I was a Communist for the FBIpower failure. Doing without gas or electric
service is something we've all experienced atone time or another. But in time
of disaster, due to natural causesor enemy attack, we might have to

(44:22):
do without such service for a longtime. With refrigerated foods, this can
be serious. If power is outfor more than twelve hours, Eat or
cook the most perishable items in yourrefrigerator before they spoil. If you can't
cook them, throw them out.Persons who own freezers, it can sult
their service books. Remember when powerfails, keep your refrigerators and freezers closed
or reminder to support the program. If you would like to do something nice

(44:45):
for me, you can go toClassic Radio dot stream and in addition to
learning about building a classic radio collectionof your own, following us on social
media, which is also nice, you can also buy me a copy.
There you can purchase some items thatwould be greatly appreciated. That's over at
Classic Radio dot stream. All right, we head out to I was a

(45:07):
Communist for the FBI, starring DanaAndrews from seventy two years ago July second,
nineteen fifty two, an episode entitledWhere the Red Men Roam. I
was a Communist for the FBI,starring Dana Andrews and an exciting tale of

(45:32):
danger and espionage. I was aCommunist for the FBI. Many of the
incidents and the story you're about tohear are based on the actual records and

(45:54):
authentic experiences. Of Matt Sivedic twofour nine fantastic years lived as a Communist
for the FBI. Here is ourstar, Dana Andrews as Matt Savedic.
I was in it for nine longyears, a member of the party.
I lived with communists, worked withthem, watched them. I learned their

(46:15):
methods, their tricks, their plans, and their weaknesses. This is my
story, the story of my lifeas a communist for the FBI. In
a moment, listen to Dana Andrewsas Matt Savedic UNDERCOVERMN. Now Here is

(46:53):
Dana Andrews as Matt Savedic undercover man. This story from the Confidential is marked
where the Red men rolled. It'sa brilliant morning with twenty one car at
sunshine and the air diamond bright. But I am seathing. All morning,

(47:17):
I've been pushing door bells, gettinghousewives to sign coming inspired peace petitions.
Yesterday I picketed an aircraft factory. The day before that, I dated a
secretary to a War Department official objectsedition. And the day before that I
solicited ads for the workers daily,And the day before that, I never

(47:38):
mind. All I know is thatI'm suddenly sick of it. All work,
the party, discipline, the revolution, until you're dropping your track sabbetic,
until you wind up in the boobyhatch boob. Finally, I'm off
duty, and I go to aform book to check out with Comrade Selenski,
the former MVD agent, now mycell chief and my chief beef in

(47:59):
the local red set up. Yes, Comrade Savedic, reporting and going off
duty. Comrade Selensky, come downto headquarters at once, but I'm supposed
to be off for once. Iwant to talk to you. We'll talk
to me now at headquarters. Comeat Sevidic. Look, I've had one
lousy, tough week, and Ihave a right to headquarters. Comrade Well,

(48:21):
I haven't eaten. I'll get downwhen I can, now, when
I've had some lunch, and notbefore, and maybe not even then.

(48:46):
He wanted to talk to me,Comrade Selensky, that was hours ago.
I hadn't had breakfast or lunch.I've been on the hoof all hours ago,
Comrade Sevedic, I must have doppedoff to sleep after lunch. You
dropped off to sleep? Very sorry? Where did you drop off to sleep?
Well, not on a park bench, that's for sure. Not at

(49:08):
home, certainly I called your home. Oh you were not there. Well,
as you know, comrade, I'mnot very welcome at home. Mother
and dad feel I have disgraced thefamily at turning communists. So I only
go home to sleep at night. We searched all over for you. I
took a room in a hotel thatwas beat. I tell you, I'm

(49:30):
tired. Perhaps I can arrange aholiday for you. What sort of holiday
you know? Jacques Sandoz, thepianist, of course I know his work.
He's working for us now. Iknow that too. His last concert
was picketed by capitalist hirelings. Icertainly think he was asking for it.

(49:51):
So ah, the man makes afortune an American. When the orchestra struck
up the national anthem in Detroit,Sando sits at his pa a noodling at
something whose national anthem the Star Spangledbanner. Of course. Of course,
look, Celensky, we're operating inAmerica. When in Rome, common self
interest dictates that we do as theRomans do. When in Rome, Comrade,

(50:15):
listen only to Caesar, Okay,I'm listening. Tomorrow night, Sandos
plays before a crowd of three thousandat Hiawatha Dell's we expect violence. Why
because we are planning violence. Itfigures we will instigate a riot and blame
reactionary anti foreign elements in the crowd. By such devices, we win the

(50:37):
foreign element in cities to our side. What's my part in all this?
What about my holiday? As islast on course, and those who play
Chopin's revolutionary etude, this will bethe signal for some of our comrades posing
as reactionaries to start a riot.See you will see that members of your
cell are dispersed in the audience, prepared for action. That's my big holiday.

(51:00):
You need not stay to the end. Slip away when the fighting begins.
Let the peasants do the dirty workcandidly. You're too useful a man
to risk in mob fighting, andyou will enjoy the concert. I know
now? How many tickets do youwish to buy for the concert? You
mean I have to pay my wayinto this arm droo, bob. It

(51:21):
all helps the party treasury? Howmany? Oh much? One dollar?
Eighty cents? One better make ittwo cometsvedek. All I need is one
that will be three dollars and sixtycents. Thank you. I'm burning a

(51:42):
holiday the day in the evening off, and all I have to do is
lead the fighting Blood and my cellinto battle at Hiawathadell's. I wonder if
the folks at home might have spilledsomething to Selenski to make him honor me
with this crummy assignment. On myone day off in months, I find
a pastation and a dial home.Hello, Hello, mom, Oh,

(52:13):
maty Mama. I got a callfrom a man this afternoon. Did you
answer the phone? No, Matty, but dip he talked to him.
How are you? So? I'mall right, I'm tired, but okay.
Can I talk to Tip? Please? You don't add Pa, Papa?
Oh his dad? Oh? Notso good? I tell him you

(52:37):
ask? Oh here here is deep? Yeah? Oh you Tip? How's
the navy? Fine? How's yours? Oh? Tip? A guy phone
for me this afternoon. Yeah.He had a deep red voice, sort
of maroon. So did you tellhim anything about me? I just told

(53:00):
him you weren't here. Did hegive you my message? No? No,
he didn't give me a message.I told the comrade clear as day
to have you call me when helocated you. I never said a word
to me, real chum, thecomrade. Yeah, what did you want.
It isn't my idea. Mom wantedit. She wants us to go

(53:22):
on a picnic tomorrow and wanted youto come along. It wasn't my idea,
Believe me, I'm sure like that. But I'll call you back this
evening and thankstep. It was mom'sidea. Sure, but thanks anyhow,
Maybe let me see what's that newFBI number at a corps? Oh?

(54:06):
Are you serious, Matt? Didyou drag me away from adult FBI business
to bench sit with you in thepark and talk about picnics? I'm going
back to the authors now. Waita minute, Wait a minute, will
you anyhow? I thought your familywas cold on you. Well, that's
just it. They think I'm ared and I've lost him. And then
all at once they asked me togo on a picnic with him and Chief
Chief. I've got to, butyou've got to go to the Sandals concert

(54:28):
too, go to the Sando's concert, pick it, get signatures, report
to the FBI, get recruits forthe party, scrape and bought a Selenski
Selensky work myself ragged for him,And he can't give me a simple message.
It might mean an awful lot tome. The picnic. You mean
the picnic? I mean, look, I want to know. Can I

(54:50):
go to that picnic with Mom andtip? It sounds like can I have
a nickel for the movies years agowhen I was a kid? I can't
help it. Look, could youpersuade your folks to hold the picnic near
Hiawatha Dell's Say that may be something? Then you'd be close enough to slip
away to the concert and do yourjob for the commis too sure fixed,

(55:15):
Yeah, they'll go for that. They'll buy that, I know, because
because Mom wants me alone so much. Isn't that one? Yeah, Matty,

(55:37):
sure, I write it down.Hiawath Adell's. It's a beautiful place
used to be an Onendega, Indianvillage. You'll like it. I write
it down. I'll be at thehouse at noon. Okay. Yeah,
I packed good things. Matt Nocares, no worries, just us the
setics. Huh yeah, Son,I buy you red balloon again? No,

(56:00):
no Mom, anything but red?Oh I forget something? What Freeman
two three one one? What aboutit? A girl call you? She
said, called Freeman two three oneone A girl Freeman two three one one.

(56:21):
Okay, I'll call her. I'llsay even noon tomorrow, Bye,
Mom, goodbye, sir one one? Hello? Is this Fremont two three

(56:46):
one one? Oh, mister SMII was told to call this number.
Oh, yes, that was me. I anyway, Tanya an Tania?
Do I know what Tanya? Iwas wondering if you could start up by
tomorrow and pick me up. I'llbe already pick you up. What for
taking me on the picnic with you? Picnic? He listen? Who are

(57:07):
you? I'm Tanya Joseph. You'retaking me the picnic tomorrow. I don't
know why I should, and Idon't think I will. Why should I?
Hello? I thought that in theparty you don't ask questions, mister
spieddick. I'll pick you up alittle before noon, four to twelve fourst

(57:28):
drive, see you then see youthere. I might have known it.
Selenski, a former MVD man, knowing all the infernal tricks of the Russian
secret police watching me always now policingme with a girl named Tanya. They
were all over, the watchers, finding out, knowing, reporting, punishing.

(57:55):
There's no escape, no escape ever. Now back to Dana Andrews starring

(58:30):
as Matt Semitic, and I wanta communist for the FBI. And the
second act of our story. Theapartment where Tanya Joseph lives is one of
the better apartments in one of thebetter neighborhoods. I wonder if Miss Tanya

(58:52):
Joseph figures on comparable diggings comes theRevolution, then Miss t Joseph opens the
door and I receive a knock proletarianjolt. Miss Joseph's is a looker.
Oh right on time, do comein, said the spider to the flyer.
Pardon nothing practicing My mumbling is all. Most spiders are harmless, even

(59:15):
useful. Then you did hear, aren't they? Some of them are black
widows. But it takes all kind, doesn't it. I hate black and
I'm going to marry a man youngerthan I am, so I won't be
a widow. Shall I wear acoat? It's going to be chili,
But a coat won't help any Maybeyou'll help break the ice with your family.

(59:37):
Is that what you mean in thefamily. I'm part of the chill.
You'll tell me more about your folksin the drive over, won't you.
I'll tell you all about them rightnow. They don't like communists,
not even you, especially, noteven me. Do I have to be
a communist? Ask yourself? Thatnot me? I mean to? Then
can't I just be a girl? You know? Oh that might things on

(01:00:00):
a pleasanter basis at that. Okay, you're a girl, I know,
not part of the black or red. Good Let's go. Mother. This

(01:00:24):
is Nastania Joseph. I am happyand I'm very happy to know you.
Matt's mother. It's my younger brother, Tip. Oh not so much,
younger. I live right and hedoesn't an Tanya. He's there. Oh
he's feeling pretty good, but herather stay home today. Oh can't I
see before we go? For it'snothing contagious? You like pretty young girls

(01:00:47):
like you. Hey, something's cooky. I make something for Papa. Pachenka.
I smell Pachenka. Oh you're here. Your voice, she knows from
Pachenka's. Then you come to seethat sometime I make you pitchca look what

(01:01:07):
I bring you for? This offto a fair start. Anyhow, it'll
work, Tip, we'll have fun. You'll see quite a gal there.
When did you meet up with that? Let's not be disrespectful, younger brother.
She's got what two years on me. Two years is two years?

(01:01:30):
Where'd you meet her? Why can'tI ask? You can ask? Why?
So mysterious? Does she know you'rea red? I never told her?
Is she she's a red? Shenever told me. That's good enough
for me. It'll have to beYep, don't get interested in this girl.

(01:01:52):
Please. You're not serious about her, are you? No? Then
what's the beef for? One thing? Shoot? She's older than you are?
That maybe, but I've lived hard. It was nice the picnic.

(01:02:27):
This was home and love and family. This was America and the sweet remembrance
of things passed, and I knewthat I loved it, and Mom and
Tip and Dad. As much asI hated being a communist, even for
the FBI, I had enough.I wanted out again. Bucket they bomb,

(01:02:57):
bucket, bum cover bock. Listento this one. The old family
toothbrush, the balls of vic toothbrush, the Calmunees toothbrush that hong on the

(01:03:17):
wall, the old family tooth brush, the ball so big toothbrush that calm
you, mister brush prey. Itwas fun. I loved it. Mom

(01:03:52):
and Tip probably thought I was beinga good sport about it, not to
upset Tanya. I wasn't supposed toknow. I was a rent, but
I something and knew it. SurelyI didn't want to be a communist anymore,
for the FBI or anyone else.I wanted out. Twilight, I

(01:04:12):
sat alone on the river bluff, thinking, planning escape. How then what?
Oh, I'm searching for you.I've been here. Oh, it's
a lovely evening. It's been awonderful day, wonderful, but it's the

(01:04:35):
life our philosophy sneers at. It'sbourgeois and hoki, and you love it.
I never realized how much I missedit. Only you mustn't think or
talk that way. That's why theysent you, isn't it to see that
I didn't fall for the old hocumbbucket peace and simplicity and sentiment to police

(01:04:58):
me. Yes, I know thetechnique. I'm lucky. Other backsliders are
invited to Moscow to get a refreshercourse on communism and they never come back.
I'm lucky. I shouldn't say this. I'm sorry for you. I
shouldn't say this to you. ButI'm not going to the Hiawatha Bull tonight.

(01:05:21):
They might miss you the concert, they might not in that crowd unless
somebody warns them. I'll be playinghooky somebody. Oh here, Tip,
and Tip isn't red bait. Iwarn you, Tanya. Would you help

(01:05:41):
mom pack up the stuff or she'llnever be ready in time for the concert?
What concert? Oh? I forgotto tell you. Jacques Sanders is
playing at the Bowl, and Kitsaid he'd take me. Oh, you
you're all my guests tonight. Well, I'll help your mother with the picnic
baskets. Now, yep, theremight be trouble at that answered tonight,
Well, Tanya wanted to hear.Sandos are getting too interested in that girl,

(01:06:05):
except she isn't of that girl. It's been a good day, Tip,
a nice day for all of us. It may never be this way
again. I don't want to spoilbrace yourself. Tip, I've got news
for you, Tanya. Joseph isa communist, Like you said, Matter,

(01:06:26):
It's been a great day like oldtimes. We don't want to spoil
it. No, when a comediewants to smeer anybody, you call him
a comi or her, let's notspoil it. Tip. Then let's all
finish the day right and finish ittogether. I'll go to the concert with
you, Tip, Okay, thegirl wins getting late, yeah, later

(01:06:49):
than you think. The big HiawathadellBowl was packed and packed with dynamite.
I kept watching Mom, enjoying everysecond of it, wondering how much longer

(01:07:12):
does she have on Earth? I'min a long, hard fight and she
might go before she learns that herMattie was really on the right side all
the time. How much longer? And then the last encore I watched Tip
and Tanya. Tip's face is puzzled. What's that he's playing now to a

(01:07:36):
revolutionary eating what's the idea? Thesandos bum is the guy who stayed set
when the national anthem was being played. Once, take it easy, Tip,
don't tell me he's playing that revolutionaryatue just by accident. It's a
classy dear, plenty of other classics. Why just that he's a jumping red
and everybody knows it's all right. It isn't all right. I like my

(01:07:57):
propaganda music above board, like Saltsit Down, almost tooth loom, the
less tooth Brice hat, the oldfamily brush hat, hang on the walls,
toothpaste, and then we use Potter, and then we used ourself,
but now we use wine. Nobut you. It happens in an instant,

(01:08:28):
the bottle flying over the heads ofthe crowd and hitting tipped square in
the mouth, tip staggering backs, fitting blood, and then sailing into a
guy who tries to swing grass knuckleson him. The whole crowd surging and
muttering like an angry tide. Fistsflying, brick bats, clubs, blackjacks
coming out of concealment, and thebattle of the bowl is on, but
not the way the commis wanted it. Reporting couldn't allow you to come down

(01:09:10):
torect ther FBI headquarters. Matt, you understand that. How are you bruised?
Head, bloody but unbowed? Excuseme? Have Jerry come in,
will you? Thanks? I havea confession to make you, Matt.
Anything you say will definitely be usedagainst you, and I'll deserve it too.

(01:09:30):
But Matt, I knew you hadto go on that picnic, but
I also knew the deep emotional sentimentaleffect a fine day with your family might
have on you. I couldn't riskyour blurting out the truth to your folks.
You were working for the FBI,so I sent somebody to guard against
that, Matt. This is Geraldine, Hello, Matt, Tanya or Geraldine

(01:09:55):
or Norm or k or just someone of our best FBI girls, Matt,
and definitely our best looking. Ihad to do it, Matt,
line of duty. I thought Celenskiwished you on me. We wantedn't expected
you to think that. Okay,Matte, okay, great, Only we
mustn't see each other again. Great, good work, Matt. Goodbye,

(01:10:19):
Matt. Yeah, you won't cracknow with it, Not for a while
anyway. Maybe when it's all over, Mat, so long, somebody.

(01:10:44):
That's how it is. It's alwaysgoodbye. Goodbye to peace and picnics,
family and sentiment. Goodbye to Katiedid swearing in the summer haze and whipple
wheels in the dusk. Goodbye tosentiment, the old oaken bucket. Maybe
when it's all over math, Yeah, maybe, but I chose it this

(01:11:09):
way. I'm a communist for theFBI. I walk alone. Dana Andrews

(01:11:30):
will return in just a moment. This is Dana Andrews with a word about
the stories you hear on these programs. Many of them, like the one
you've just heard, are founded infact, but with essential details disguised or

(01:11:54):
modified to protect innocent persons. Nextweek, another exciting story based on incident
in the nine long years that MattSvedik spent as an undercover man for the
FBI. Be with us, then, won't you? From seventy two years

(01:12:49):
ago July second, nineteen fifty two, Dana Andrews, I was a communist
with the FBI. Coming up next, we will go to the mean streets
of Culver City, California and findout what was going on on the night
watch. Everyone in the United Statesshould know his community's public action signals and

(01:13:15):
what they mean. There are twosignals. The alert signal is a steady
blast of three to five minutes. It means attack is probable. Take action
as directed by your local authorities.Tune your radio to the CONRARAD frequency of
six forty or twelve forty for officialinstructions and information. The take cover signal
is a wavering tone or short blastfor three minutes. It means attack is

(01:13:36):
imminent. Take cover in the bestavailable shelter. Be prepared. Know these
signals and what they mean. Thetelevision show that aired on Fox for a
number of years, called Cops, was innovative in the video age. It
was not innovative in media in general. The show went all the way back

(01:13:57):
to nineteen fifty four show that airedon CBS called night Watch with Don Reid,
who used innovative technology and hauling arounda sixty pound real to real tape
recorder at which he recorded what wasgoing on on police scenes. Now,
three years later a show on ABCcalled Unit ninety nine would do pretty much

(01:14:24):
the same thing on the streets ofbrain work. Here it was Sacramento,
California. And so between these twoshows you had real not just things written
in studios acted out by performers, but you had real life people doing real

(01:14:49):
things. And it did it didmake a big deal of difference in how
people air the things. These werenot any stretch of the imagination kid shows,
even though they aren't on Friday nights. It aired in Chicago at eight
thirty, It aired in New YorkCity at nine thirty, and it aired

(01:15:14):
in LA at what time? OhI don't have that, do I?
Okay? Yes, well no that'snot LA, that's that's Washington, d
C. So it aired at ninethirty in Washington. So it was out
there. But as you will hearhere, these are things on this day
and age that even now you mightgo, do we want to have the

(01:15:36):
kids listening to this. Let's listento night Watch with Don Reid, going
back seventy years July second, nineteenfifty four and the title on this is
a Drunken Brawl and a thirty eightspecial. I have sex and Service starting

(01:15:58):
my age two and six sixty fivetwenty seven six sixty five otches Perkins at
Johnson Tech Co. Nine a mturning night Watches. This is Don Reed.
I'm a police recorder. You're writingin the backseat of car five six,
a detective unit, just reporting inservice on the night Watch. You're

(01:16:20):
going along with us tonight just whereYour guess as good as mine. However,
remember the people you hear are notactors. This is it, This
is real. This is night Watch. Night Watch, the actual on the

(01:16:43):
scene report of your police force inaction. Every voice, every sound is
authentic. The investigations are recorded asthey actually occur. Night Watch presented with
the cooperation of the Police Department ofCulver City, California. W. N.
Hildebrand, Chief. We switch youNADU car five six on patrol and
your police recorder, Don Reed controlone of five six your location five six

(01:17:15):
to one. We're southbound on Jeffersonapproaching Raymond Boulevard one to five six in
front of ten eighty five Parker Drive. That's one o eight five Parker Drive.
A two fourteen down progress advice ifyou need further assistance, code three
by six to one ten for takingoff. In response to that call,

(01:17:42):
the two fourteen in progress meets usa fight going out at that location.
Now we've kicked on our siren tomove the traffic over to allow us to
get there as soon as possible. We're rolling Code three. That's red light
and siren. As you can wellimagine any do you like this? Every
second cons as I look ahead watchingthat siren clup pass boris, I can't
help but remember what a Vetroman detectivetold me the other day, said something

(01:18:05):
about chasing a pole up suspect ofthe gun. Never called him, but
running cold three scaredy the dead. Now look ahead, I can well appreciate
this point of view. There's asign and really get on the treatment out
of that. Sun will be therein just a matter of seconds, should
be on the next corner. Yes, parably, that's it. Several people
running from the cafe on the corner, sliding into a stop. There's a

(01:18:26):
fight going on, but it's ourviewers blocked for the most part by milling
crowd. So just out of thecar and waiting, and so let's get
going over there. Out of thecar. Okay, here's a picture a
man down on the street. Awoman is on top of him, beating
over the head with the heel ofher shoes. Another place. Unit's rolled

(01:18:48):
in off. Sir Ross is givingus a hand or sport her to the
police car. She's getting up thestruggle misnecessary to handcuff the prisoner. County
that you get in the police car. Here, I will, I'll be
glad to you, but I'm gonnakill him. I'm gonna kill myself because

(01:19:09):
you understand that I've read it allthe time for Jonnifers that text. You
give him what've been out the wayhere? All right, we have the
subject under control. Now let's checkout the victims. He got a post,

(01:19:30):
Yes, he's got a false. It's pretty fast right now, he's
breezing right, We're waiting the eminencecomes in. Now it's on his way.
I see. Apparently he was prettybadly beating up. Well, that's
a woman over in the car iscertainly uh letting loose up arrives here?
Sure is what you say, lady. All the sergeant's going over to check

(01:19:51):
on the witness. Let's go backto the car where the prisoner is being
held for a moment. How youdon't bring bank lessons? I know he's
your asks. You want me totake your glass away? You're taking part?
Please do all right? And howthis is so? Yes, that's
what I like about just ma'am,But we'll take good glasses. Who is

(01:20:13):
snaky man already? Why know whathappened? Now? And well we were
see we work over here, andwe just looked across he heard at least
argument, and the lady and anotherguy were there, and this guy was
probably had an argument. I knowit's his wife or not. And anyhow,
the next thing, you know, why, she tried to get in
his slugg and he pushed away.He didn't hit her, that's all on
the ground. He just pushed herand she fell on her she's loaded.
Excuse me, my woman's out again. Well here we go again. The

(01:20:39):
prisoner is out of the car andthe sergeant, however, has her under
control once again. He was puttingin the back seat of the car.
What happened here tonight? I comehere the one and drinking and we haven't
drinks that following you and then hecome in and we have a couple more
drinks. I want you if youhad to drink tonight? And what boy?

(01:21:02):
Then and you were hitting a fellowwith the with your shoe. He
hit my husband. That's why? What were you doing out with him?
I still loved my husband. Hewas sitting in the barn and he's talking
aboutn't and I was sitting with him. And then I says, I love
my husband and I love him.He doesn't you love your husband? You'll
come here out with another man.I wasn't out with another man. Don't

(01:21:23):
give me. Did you get ina fight with his fellow here? He
was in the barroom, sitting hereand he come up nest me the dance
and I was in here and Idanced with him another so I don't know.
And this girlfriend, well, thenthis guy come over and he says,
do you might have been dancing yourwife? And then if I sad

(01:21:43):
but I can't, I want youto drink. You sit back in the
car here. No trouble is thatgros Well, we can't have this kind
of trouble. H We don't knowall Go look, Bill, take this

(01:22:09):
breaking around into the station. Willyou just get her off the street.
We're just attracting a crowd here.Okay, Well, walking out here in
the middle of the street, whereSergeant Perkins is directing traffic, not in
the distance, you probably can hearan ambulance rolling in. So uh briefly,
this is our situation. The womanas sailings has been placed in another
police unit and is now en routeto the station, and a just a

(01:22:30):
matter of moments, we'll habetical aidto the victim lying here on the sidewalk
al. The siren is coming inpretty loud right now. I just can't
talk anymore, so let's just letit roll right on in. He's managed
it beating over the head with hisshoe. He's probably got a concussion.
Better take him right over at theemergency hospital and the motor officer will follow

(01:22:50):
you over. See everything's okay.Wow, Well, sergeant, that was
some hassle. Huh. Yeah, this case has a new twist to it.
What do you mean for that?I remember she was screaming the three
and she was being a fellow overthe head as she was trying to protect
her husband. Yeah, I thinkeverybody for three blocks around heard that she

(01:23:10):
made one mistake. Manchoos being overthe head was her husband. You are
listening to night Watch and following adetective unit on its tour of duty.
Every voice, every sound is authentic. The investigations are recorded as they actually
occur. We'll bring you the finalresults of the night's cases at the conclusion

(01:23:33):
of the night Watch. We takeyou now back to car five six somewhere
in the field and police recorder DonReid five two five six your location five
sixty five two were at Venice andOberland. So we met at Cover and

(01:23:56):
Oberland five six ten four. We'reuh just pulling up to Unit five two
waiting for US officers camera and good, let's check this out. What have

(01:24:19):
you got? Uh good? Uh? Tonight, a few minutes ago,
we got the word from a felladown to filling station at one of his
customers had come in there tonight andthat he was packing a thirty eight special.
Fella said he had a strap tothe stirring column. He was pretty
well under the influence, been drinkingpretty heavy on Yeah, what uh kind

(01:24:40):
of car did he have? Hehad a nineteen fifty Ford two door,
two two tone in color, darktop and tan body. He didn'tbody get
a license number on the Cardill nolift? Which Uh, which way'd the
car go? Uh? I'd laterallysaid he went uh eastbound on wars and
the boulevard at the time. Okay, well we'll uh, we'll go up
there right away. Uh and uhtalk with the fallacy if we can't pick

(01:25:02):
the car up. And this gunis strapped to the steering column of the
car. Yes, he's got ina holster, and holster herself is strapped
to the column. Which gas stationis it? Uh? It's the one
down on Maine and Stanley, meand and family. Okay, we'll go
right over there. Actually, thegas station's right here in the next block'st

(01:25:29):
up a few hundred yards. Matterof fact, I can see it right
now with the right hand side, small couple of gas pumps, grease racks
swinging into the drive. Just oneattendant. I guess, white uniform,

(01:25:51):
so I'll check that it used tobe a white uniform. Let's get the
window downe you know, one ofthe games. The uniform austers that information.
We does you what? Uh?What was the deal on it?
Well? He had a uh athirty eight pearl handle, let's say,

(01:26:12):
a swinging cylindier what it was?And uh he had a tidraw on his
steering post. It's picture fifty fourat Victoria two tone, Arkansas plates.
Slender guy we about a hundred andfifty five or sixty pounds and a little
boy with him. But uh,carrying a gun like I loaded and drinking
wine? Uh doing add up?No it doesn't. I don't too many

(01:26:34):
hold up, so I think Idon't know. But uh, he's headed
in this direction with the boy.He had a bottle of wine landing the
seat. He went to the restroom. I said, what's that land
of the seats, honey? Hesaid, that's dad. He's cough batter.
See how old? How was theboy? A little boy's about Uh,

own job. Yeah, there's nodoubt about it. Well, we'll go
down the site. So you justtake out of here back in the car.
What if he's got the k inthe car? I can't see,

(01:28:00):
I couldn't see. He's probably goneinside that bar. I'm supposed to take
the kid in the bar with him. I don't know any guy carries the
guns likely to do anything. Yeah, when he got the points there,
Yeah, let's pull around here, stake out. I got a close another

he comes out, we may needa Santa Monica unit to assist us in
stopping him. Throw on five thickwell out, I buy hows. We'll
sit back and relax. Oh fivesixty control. When requesting a time check,

(01:29:41):
Well, according to all calculations,he should flip a U turn right
about here. He should if he'sgoing in that direction. I hope he
does. Let's see what happens therehe goes and he didn't flip to you,
he went straight ahead, and we'llpick up the tail. Since we
get in the proper position, we'lluh hit this car stopped. When we

(01:30:03):
get some uniform officers to join upwith us so that we can shake his
car down the turn out with thekind of this collector, it's a whole

you for bringing my boy home.Yeah. Oh lot, that little leppie's

(01:40:24):
following his work happy. You bettergo back inside. Go bag fella.
This later than you think. You'vebeen listening to actual cases of your police
force in action on the night Watchinvestigations recorded as they happened, and now

(01:40:47):
back to police headquarters and Chief W. N. Hildebrand. In the first
investigation tonight, in which the officersfound the woman beating her husband over the
head with her shoe, the subjectwas booked for assault, the maximum penalty
of which is six months in thecottage ail and a five hundred dollar fine.
In the final case, where theman was reported carrying a gun as

(01:41:10):
you heard, the investigation revealed hedid not have the gun in his possession
at the time he was stopped. However, the man was intoxicated and exposing
a small child to considerable danger.Consequently, he was booked for intoxication and
contributing to the delinquency of a minor. We are presenting the actual events recorded
on the night Watch with a verydefinite purpose in mind. Recently I received

(01:41:35):
a letter from a young lady whostated, as she was walking home,
a man jumped from his car andattempted to drag her in. Fortunately,
the suspect was frightened off. However, she had listened to night Watch and
remembered our instructions to take the licensenumber and inform the local police department at

(01:41:56):
once. Curious at the final result, we checked with the involved and found
that the suspect had been picked upand incidentally pled guildy to the charge.
In such a case as this,it gives meaning to why we are presenting
night Watch. Thank you, ChiefHildebrand. You have heard on the scene
reports of your police force in action. Every voice, every sound has been

(01:42:19):
real. Night Watch, brought toyou through the cooperation of the Police Department
of Culver City, California, isproduced by Stirling Tracy and Jim Headlock,
with technical advice by Sergeant Ron Perkins, and described in the field by police
recorder Don Reid revolutionary from a technicalaspect and also from the starkness that shows

(01:42:42):
such as night Watch in Unit ninetynine, which was produced in Sacramento,
was just it was a totally differentconcept, and of course when cops came
around, it used the smaller cameras, the very portable cameras to be able
to do the same thing that nightWatched it. Don Reid, by the

(01:43:04):
way, continued with that sort ofthing, not just that specifically, but
he was a reporter who would gointo the field with the newspeople. Let's
see and La Times columnist Don Pagetyking about Read what he really relishes his

(01:43:25):
investigative reporting. He described one ofRead's most dramatic news reports of a stakeout
and narcotics arrest. After setting thescene, he let the suspects footsteps fill
the airwaves almost indeterminably until the policeofficers cracked, voice cracked, freeze.
It was like a bolt of lightningcoming through your speaker. Read once said,

(01:43:46):
such sound is fifty percent of radio, and that was it. Reid
died in two thousand and three atthe age of eighty eight. Well remembered
night Watch here on Classic Radio Theaterwith Wyatt Cox coming up tomorrow, as

(01:44:08):
I mentioned, Too Many Cooks,a comedy show, a summer series starring
the very funny Hal March, alsoArmis Brooks starring Eve Barden, Have Gun
Will Travel starring John Dayner, GunSmoke starring William Conrad, and of course
Loman Abner. On Thursday, weare going to have this year a very

(01:44:29):
special Independence Day show with episodes ofLife of Luigi, about the Fourth of
July Parade, the Penny Singleton Show, the summer series We're dealing with a
safe and sane Fourth also have anepisode of anthology from WNBC in New York,
their Fourth of July special, NormanCorwyn play horm Home for the fourth

(01:44:50):
from nineteen forty four, and we'llwrap it all up with another episode in
the White Plague series of Superman programs. Right now, though we're going to
continue with an episode of Gangbusters. The threat of fire in our homes is

(01:45:13):
always with us. It's a goodidea to know how to deal with it.
For fire to burn, three thingsare necessary. Fuel, heat and
air, take anyone away, andno flames. Most small fires can be
put out by cooling, dousing themwith water, or by smothering, taking
the air away. Another method isto get the blaze outside, take the
fuel away by using a broom orother tool. So remember a fire needs

(01:45:36):
heat, fuel and air. Takeanyone away and no fire. A show
that really ticked off j Edgar Huberat the time was Gangbusters, not because
of Gangbusters content, He just didn'tlike the way the show was presented,
and so he decided when the showwas still being called g Man, he

(01:45:58):
didn't want the show to have theendorsement of the FBI. So Phillips h
Lords took the show a different direction. I mean, kept sound of the
show the same, but didn't letit focus on the investigation and focused on
the crime. And that's what youhad with Gangbusters. This episode of the
show goes back seventy five years Julysecond, nineteen forty nine, and this

(01:46:21):
is the Case of the Metropolitan MotorMob and now Gangbusters. Gangbusters presented in
cooperation with police and federal law postmandepartments throughout the United States. The only
national program that brings you authentic policecase histories, now Gangbusters. The Case

(01:47:00):
of the Metropolitan MOTORBIB which challenge persistentpolice in an endurance contest involving a wire
snake, a rubber stamp, andfifty thousand in cold hard catch. Tonight,
Gangbusters has asked the Honorable John JaySullivan, former Deputy Commissioner and Chief
of Detectives of the Police Department ofthe City of New York, to narrate

(01:47:23):
the case of the Metropolitan MOTORBILB.Commissioner. Sullivan, thank you and good
evening, Gangbusters listeners. I'd liketo begin tonight's case in the WILLIAMS.
Boig section of Brooklyn, Oily oneevening, just about a year ago,
in a small, unkemped neighborhood candyand stationary store, an attractive but over

(01:47:45):
painted blonde sat at a tiny fountain, drinking a soda and reading the magazine.
A few steps away, the proprietorstood counting some of the small change
which made up a good part ofthe store receipts. George, what you

(01:48:06):
made it? Soda? Too sweet? Will you put in a little vision?
Put it in yourself on vis Idon't know the vision from the playing
water crying out loud. I'm tryingto count up some money. Nicholas and
dimes. Ten years you got acandy store. You don't know how to
make a soda. Yes, trythat and leave me alone. George,

(01:48:33):
Why don't we sell a joint? There's a lot of things we could be
doing night, you know. Listen, it's always a good policy to have
a nice little business to fall backon. Yeah, but a lot of
the candy. How you doing, hey, George, tell your mother cookies?
She said your aunt carry Oh?Is that so? What is your

(01:48:54):
phone done? Hour ago? George? Give me two. Nicholas William listen,
your old lady can wait a minute? What you do at the time.
What do you think I did withit? I parked it around the
corner. You want to get itstolen? Somebody gonna steal it just like
you did. Nobody can steal it. It took a jumper off the ignition.
We get it in the garage. You got an opening let of hot
kylie on the street. Some copslevel a trip over it, all right,

(01:49:14):
give me a chance, give hima chance. It takes them three
hours to go out to benson Hurstand lift the car and bring it back.
And he wants me to give hima chance. Get in the garage.
Cookie. I want to get itregistered in the morning and move it
for a fast sale. Sure, just let me call my mother, give
me a couple of nickels for adime, will you hear? Call your
mother and get the car in thegarage? All right, a few minutes,
George. That's what his mother allthe time. Anyway. Oh,

(01:49:41):
it's like go whatever they call it, it's got something to do with Freud.
What's Cookie and his mother got todo with anybody like Freud? I
read it once in a paper, the Mirror on Sunday morning, a big
article in the magazine section. Youthink the guy who was long past the
thirty mark and has already had oneor two bits and sings sing behind him,
cause sends already a buck to oncein a while and forget about it.
Well, according to Freud, youget attached to something. It's a

(01:50:04):
proven fact because it was in amirror. In Cookie's case, it's his
mother with you with this lousy candystore. You're a big time operator in
hot cars. You got to setup with forged registrations and special keys,
the whole crew of guys. Themoney's pouring in from all sides. What's
that proof? It proves you gotno business spending twelve fifteen hours a day

(01:50:26):
and a joint like this three centnewspapers. It's five cent candy. Your
egos attached to it is plain psychological. What do you want me to do?
Checking a bellevue for observation. Iwant you to get rid of this
chicken feed business and start enjoying themoney we've been making this bell. If
I told you once, I toldyou a thousand times. How do you
like that? How do we likewhat? My mother wants to know?

(01:50:49):
What? It will be all rightif she stays over the night at my
aunt Carrie. I don't see what'swrong with it. If your aunt Carrie's
got an extra bit, she's worriedthere won't be somebody to fix me breakfast
in the morning. Is she sweet? Yeah? Like sugar candy. Mister
Cookie, get the car put up, will you? Kall? Okay,
I'm going have patience. Patience. You know you've got a lot of nerve

(01:51:14):
bell making a comparison between this candystore and Cookie's mother. Lieutenants add little
Lieutenant Sergeant Ryan is out here withone happy Harry Harris card. Yeah that's
right, Lieutenant, all right, yeah, lieutenantis step right in, okay,

(01:51:39):
heavy in there. I want thelieutenant to meet one of the prize
jumps of our day and age.Oh yeah, mister serge, with a
perfect man's mistake. This is happyHarry Harris. Happy Harry, Lieutenant Hansome
sup pleasure, Sit downhappy, Thanks. I can't stay long. I gotta
get back to a lot. Youunderstand what his record show, Ryan,

(01:52:00):
Oh, his records are all right, boss. He just got stung like
the rest of them. Sure,I got stung. These two guys drive
the car up on the lot.You understand they say you want to buy
it? I said, sure,I want to buy it. That's what
I'm a business for. Registration isperfectly okay with a stamp on it.
To me, it's perfectly legitimate deal. Nothing ill legitimate. You understand what
am I supposed to do? Passit up and let him go down the
block to see my competition. Itshould be more careful, Harry. The

(01:52:24):
dealer's gotten plenty of warning as bunchis operating all over New York and Brooklyn.
Let's lieutenant, I'm plenty carefully understandwho's out the sixteen hundred dollars in
this deal. May that's who Icheck every angle. Look when all a
bunch of thiefs. Need is arubber stamp with the numbers. Being careful
in enough. Yeah, there's oneconsolation, Harry. You're not the only
one who's been hip. Yeah.Thanks. It's gonna make me sleep nights,

(01:52:45):
but I ain't gonna get me backto sixteen hundred A mouth that's gone.
You understand. What did you rememberabout this tear? Ryan? Not
much, Lieutenant. Just while theywere making out the papers, the little
one asked to use the telephone.Who'd recall happy? The guy? I
mean, yeah, Well, soundsto me like it's talking to his mother.
I can't hear Broy. Well,I'm here, he's there. I'm
making out the papers. You understand, I'm not paying particular attention. But

(01:53:08):
he calls him mo over the telephone. I've been over this angle with him.
Lieutenant. Got everything we need onokay, Harry. If we want
you anymore, we'll be in touch. Yeah. Thanks, and you'll be
more careful from now on. Huh, careful? From now on. I
investigate every deal from top to bottomyin a stand, every customer's got to
bring his put certificate. Come on, what number was that? Ryan?

(01:53:31):
When you do a boss and there'sno telling how many more we haven't heard
about yet. Don't you think that'sjust about enough? Yeah, I'd say
so. And suppose you start gettinga line on those thieves. Listen,
boys, I got Adler, Mackeyand myself, all of us working over
time. We can't even get asmell. These people jump from Brooklyn to
New York, to the Bronx andback to Queens. They pick up a
car here, they shut up toa dealer there. Okay, like,

(01:53:56):
come ahead, well it was HappyHarry. Any help, Yeah, a
lot of help. Andler one ofthe thieves has got a mother, No
kidding you, fellas, better startmaking some progress on this. Chief's beginning
to put the pressure on me,and I'm passing it right along to you.
I want those thieves, Ryan. How did Happy Harry know that one

(01:54:17):
of them had a mother? Calledher on the telephone, shack on the
huge cola. Huh. Come tothink of it, that's sort of a
strange thing for a thief to do. All the thieves I know are strange
people. Boss. You know,I once handled a guy five or six
years ago. We talked to himabout car thefts, burglaries. He talked

(01:54:40):
to us about his mother, what'shis name? Cut the pleague got two
to five years out of it.I think God couldn't be the same guy.
Take a check him, Dallas,Cookie Dallas, Yeah, Cookie Dallas.
Well, come on, Andler, let's see what we can pick up
on mister Cookie Dallas. Hey,what are you doing with my car?

(01:55:06):
Oh? Me? Yeah? Youwhat are you doing? And I look
bad? I don't get excited.I was just I know what you're up
to. I'm gonna call up police. No, you're not. What do
you think I was doing? Hey? What's going on there? Holy?
He thought it? Hello candy store? Hello, George's cookie? My mother

(01:55:44):
call? No, she didn't know, but if she does, what you
tell her. I don't be hometo sleep tonight. Listen, Georgie.
I had a little trouble. Whatkind of trouble. I was working on
a brand new Roadmaster seating it likeoff the floor, so the owner walks
up out of the dock. Ihad to bounce in one on the head
and a cop walks around the corner. Do you get away? Okay?
I ain't talking for no police station. And we shot at me a couple
of times, like he was darkingup. I left down the subway station.

(01:56:05):
All right, I listened, well, laying off for a while,
get in touch with the boys. Will he is to stay away from here
and stay away from the garage?Shall I give the word? George?
It ain't neces. Sorry, nobodycould have dedentify me. Was too dark.
I said, well, laying offfor a while, and I go
on home to Mama. I'll callyou when I want you. Was it

(01:56:26):
George? It's Cookie? He hada narrow squeak. You know I've been
looking for something like this. Well, good excuse to keep cooking the boys
from coming around, stopping the operation. So what happens to the business.
The business goes on, The storestays open as usual. I don't mean
that's loudly pennies worth of this pennieswhether it's that business, I mean the

(01:56:47):
automobile business. Oh baby, thereis not something like fifty grand in the
kiddy right or wrong right? Butthe kiddie ate all yours, you know,
half belongs to Cookie and the boysas well, and me. I
decided it's all going to be mineAndeus. So what made you decide that?
It stands the reason the man withthe brains is entitled, don't you

(01:57:11):
think maybe maybe you're right, George. We could get rid of this candy
story, even if we have togive it away and travel in luxury.
Will travel? Bell? Baby, how can I get rid of the candy
store or going business? You sellit or you give it away, or
come me out of the deal.I'm tired of going through life with a
candy store around my neck like likea milestone. Okay, Bell, I'll

(01:57:35):
get rid of the candy store, but I gotta get my price. So
Gang Busters listeners, detectives of theNew York City Police Department, we're getting
their first lead and their investigation ofannoying auto theft ring. The leader of
the gang who was planning to cutother members out of their share of the

(01:57:58):
loot. Anticipation did trouble, butthey didn't know just how much. Now
Here again is Tonight's narrator, CommissionerJohn Jay Sullivan. Well, New York
detectors were just getting a start ontheir investigation into this auto theft ring.
It was the next afternoon when SergeantRyan walked from a restaurant daughter car parked

(01:58:21):
on Union Abby in Brooklyn. Cook. He's coming out with good just paying
his check, all right, HappyI'll point out this man when he passes.
His name's Cookie Dallas, next convictfor the record for auto theft.

(01:58:44):
We think he may also be theone of whom of patrolman fired two shots
last night. We don't know.I want you to take a good look
at him and tell me if he'sone of the men, the one that
used the phone. I'll take alook, but I don't have much recollection
for the guy and the other onedoes all the transacting. The little one
is just along for the ride. Here he comes, boys, look him
over? Happy that one? Howyou buddy? I'm looking well, Uh,

(01:59:12):
when he gets a little closer myeyes, that's so good. You
understand I need glasses, but Ikind of feel it quit my personality,
you know what I mean. He'sfunny clothes. Yeah, yeah, is
he the guy? He looks forme that much of say? But is
he the guy? Well, Ican't say definitely one way or the other.
But he looks for me, youunderstand, like I know him from

(01:59:33):
someplace. That's not enough. Happyhe goes Adler and Mackie right behind him
and keep him there. Yeah,I wish we picked up his trail last
night. We might have had himalready. I'm sorry, lieutenant, but
if I could identify my wartch youknow me, But the little guy don't
pay much attention, do you understand? But I know I recognize the other
guy. Okay, heppy, he'sone of them. Sooner or later,

(01:59:54):
E leaders to the man you canrecognize. Say, oh, shut off,
soft bell, six o'clock. Wello'clock on a Sunday morning. I

(02:00:16):
gotta get the store. Customers willbe done on the Sunday papers. We
get them elsewhere. Honey, I'msorry. It ain't in my heart to
sell a store. Yeah, well, it's in my heart, I give
said. It must be psychology, the same as cookies. Mother. A
man with brains enough to work outa perfect racket stealing cars don't have to

(02:00:38):
peddle newspapers at six o'clock Sunday morning. I'm sorry that I can't sell the
store. If I got to giveup the car stealing racket and keep the
store, I'll give up the racket. And what if you got to give
up your wife? No, Bell, don't force me to make such a
choice. Kidding the big martyr standingthere expecting somebody to shed tears for him.

(02:00:58):
Bell, I can't stick around thestore. How long do you think
it'll be before cooking? The otherswill one or do? How long can
you stall? I don't think it'ssomething that's tell them. Okay, George,
you keep the store, Honey,Baby, I'm glad you can see
it my way. I can't seeit your way, George. I just
got plans on my own, andthey don't include any candy store with newspapers.
At six o'clock Sunday morning, Ryan, Hello, Ryan Adler, Lieutenant

(02:01:29):
around? All right? Now?What's doing? Mackie and I are still
behind cookie anything? He took hismother out from evening. Oh that night
I left home about eight o'clock. He took it right to the Panama You
going, yeah, We set acouple of rows behind him. I've seen
better, one of those high classWestern he's buying his mama and a nice

(02:01:51):
cream soda. Well what flavors?Listen, Ryan, how about talking to
the lieutenant. I think we oughtto give up on cookie. Been with
him since last Thursday, and allwe've seen is his mother. I regret
opening my mouth. His stick withcookies or stick with it? Maybe his
mother? The steeler cut Hello Bell, no brain too late. Don't let

(02:02:25):
it bother you. Cookie, There'snothing I like better than waiting in a
saloon all alone. Sow. Yeah, thanks, What do you want to
do? Oh no, not athing, bro, I just finished an
ice cream soda a half hour ago. What strawberry? Can you keep me
waiting because of an ice cream soda? Mother? Wasn't the ice cream soda?
It was a long picture. Didn'texpect somebody to take his mother out

(02:02:47):
with buying an ice cream soda orsomething after? Can't you? No?
No, no, Cookie, Iguess you can't. Now what's the deal.
George ready to start operating again? It's about time? No, George
ain't ready. What's the matter ofI don't see it getting so hot with
cops. We've got a good thing. We gotta milk it. Why is
it getting impatient? I have tomention? George says no? All right,

(02:03:09):
George says no. What about thedoor I got coming? Let's hold
that up. I could use it. Listen, Cookie, if George is
so stubborn, we could start rightup operating again without you. Sure,
without George? Yeah, you getthe boys to lift the cars. I'll
take care of making up the registrationsand the license plate. Wait a minute,
I know what's done. I've seenhim do every one of them.

(02:03:30):
There's no trick to it. Yeah, but George ain't gonna be very happy.
I'll be happy enough with this candy. You want dough, don't you,
Cookie? If George you give mewhat I got coming, I'd be
okay. He won't give you whatyou got coming? Who says he I
do? I ain't know where todo. He won't give it to you
unless you and the rest of theboys get together and get tough, awful
tough. Sorry you want anyway.I've had enough of George in that lousy

(02:03:55):
candy store. I want to liveCookie, Yeah, or you dream and
Nichols and Dimes. Well, I'llgive you some trying to think it over.
I'm anxious to get started. Startthinking right now. Yeah, yeah,
I'm thinking, Lieutenant. Yeah,Mackie just called crazy. I and

(02:04:30):
Adler were behind Cookie. Cookie tookus my mother home and then went to
this bar in Flatbush. There wasa woman waiting there. He went right
over to the table and sat down. Who was the woman? Mackie didn't
know. Boss. He talked fora half hours so and then Cookie left
alone apparently went home in to bed. Mackie followed him there, and Adler
stayed in the bar with intentions offollowing the woman and then stay there,
right, Lieutenant Anton Helone, LieutenantAdler, Yes, did Mackie him?

(02:04:57):
Yes, we know all about thewoman. Wish she She left the bar
right after Cookie did. She tooka cab, went right to this apartment
house on the Bay. She usedthe key on the street door, went
upstairs on the self service elevator, stopped on the fourth floor, and that's
where she apparently got out. Anyidea who she is? Yeah, I
think so. I woke the superintendentand he said, the only woman of
that description living on the fourth flooris a missus George Rossy. Her husband

(02:05:21):
uprates a small candy store in Williamsburg. All right, go on home and
get some sleep. We'll start checkingup on a couple in the meantime.
Good morning, George, Good morningbell as every little thing. Where were

(02:05:45):
you till nearly two o'clock this morning? I told you, George, if
your heart's ale in a candy's door, we are through. I'll make my
own arrangement, and from a goodsource I understand you started making such arrangements.
What do you mean a good swlike that? See? Hello,
Bell, George. Whatever he toldyou is the lie. It's a plane

(02:06:08):
line. Watch the story a minute, Bella and I are going back and
talk this over. Yeah, nowlisten, George, and watch that guy
said in that Go on, nowlisten, George, who are you gonna
believe me or a party like Cookie? You should have known Cookie would come
running back to me. How wouldhave gotten away with it? Now?

(02:06:29):
I got to give the boys themoney. I gotta start operating all over
again, because you're too high classfor a candy store. Huh. Let's
see if this is too high classfor you, I'll show you too high,
too high class. Think it overnow on, Maybe I'll act like

(02:06:51):
a good wife should. Good wifeshould stay out of her husband's business affairs.
Oh, Cooka, I think everythingis now straightened out. Yeah.
Well, let's hope, sir Georgeone of the boys, and we get

(02:07:12):
our money tonight, Cookie, Tonight, we start operating again. I'm now
convinced that CoP's got no line fromyour little incident. Good. I'm glad
to hear it. My guys said, Cookie. Sometimes women get like that.
She's what's called a psychological liar,just can't help it, you know,
it makes up these stories out ofthin air. I read about such

(02:07:35):
a case in Sunny Mirror, bigarticle in a magazine section. All right,
happy, we'll walk by the storeagain. Take a good look in
the window. I've got to notedefinitely, Well that's the man. Yeah.
If I can identify my will,I want to help the law in

(02:07:57):
the same Okay, take your look. Well that's him all the time,
one behind a sort of fun it'shim. I know him anyway. He's
got that peculiar look in the thing. Okay, hold it here, yeah,
Ryan, Oh yeah, Well youknow I've been in the automobile business
in Plymouth was a rock. Butfrom where I said, you never think
cops work. It's hot. Yeah, I'll don't go happy. Sure George

(02:08:18):
is the guy? Well positive, good, good. I want men on
both Cookie and George twenty four hoursa day. If and when they grab
another car. We got him right, that's the way I want him.
Right. Gosh, how's look,it's a new catalaccident and doors and windows
in lock. That won't be notrouble. What's the owner? And then

(02:08:41):
bar for a drink? We gottime. Can he have his drink in
twenty seconds? What he gets thenervous about. It's a long time since
I worked on the streets, Sowhat do you ever forget? All right,
let's go lean on the no draftventilator and I'll slip the loop through.
Okay, okay, I know right, lean on it. Yeah,
that's it. That's it. Howyou doing? Told it? I read

(02:09:09):
up there? She is, allright, get up. See, I'm
an expert. Why you're on theignition? I just let me handle it,
George, I'm getting herd all right, then handle it? You know,
George, I'm surprised that you siderwhen you taught me this business,

(02:09:31):
just goes to show you how rustyyou can get. Cut out the conversation
with do there it is? Ilike get going over a suite motor.
Yeah, you know, George, someday I'm gonna lift one of these caddies
my own personal use. And itlooks like we're okay, there's nothing to

(02:09:52):
worry about, George. It waslike lightning. Yeah, I guess I
was just a little upset about Belle. Would ever think a wife for seven
years standing would suddenly lose a headlike that? You know, for a
while I believed there Cookie, Iwouldn't do a thing like that, not
me, And then I got tothinking George wouldn't do a thing like that.

(02:10:16):
Don't waste the time. Get thisthing into the garage. Yeah,
I want to get home. Ipromise my mother would hang some pictures.
You know, I got a mother, that jokie. They're right in the
back of us. Gunn it.We can leave him in his boat.
Coming up on a strive. It'sdown on the floor. Now take the
corner, hold on. Watch theycan't hold it. Oh that ain't freaking

(02:10:54):
pandnambulance. Yeah, it's a coolbox on the corner. Oh, boss,
I guess forgot them. I guessso, Ryan, go ahead,
mess you mean the thieves of thecar. The car thieves can be patched
up. Yeah, and they'll havea long time to men. Well,
Gangbusters listeners. These car thieves weretaken to the hospital and eventually recovered from

(02:11:20):
their injuries. The whole gang wasarrested, tried, and convicted. Its
principal members are now serving their termsin sing sing. Thank you, Commissioner
John J. Sullivan for this mostinteresting case history, and congratulations to all
the New York detectives who participated inthis difficult investigation. The Night's case was

(02:11:43):
dramatized by Stanley Ness and directed byGeorge Zachary, with Vandal Kramer and Eileen
Palmer and leading roles all Enti speaking. Gangbusters is a Phillips h Lord production.
Seventy five years ago, July second, nineteen forty five. Gang musters
here on Classic Radio Theater with Wyattcogs up next Superman. When the family

(02:12:13):
is packing up to go on avacation or maybe on an all day trip
to the beach, everyone's pretty busy. Dad is sure the car is in
good condition. Mom sees to itthat food and extra clothing is packed,
and of course we can always counton the kids to bring special equipment,
everything from a tennis racket to aportable radio. The same thing is true
in preparing for possible enemy attack.Everyone should have a job to do and

(02:12:35):
know when to do it. Besure that everyone in your family is assigned
a job to do in case ofenemy attack. Now we continue on Classic
Radio Theater with Wyatt Cox with anotherepisode of Superman in the White Plague.
This episode from eighty three years agoJuly second, nineteen forty one, presenting

(02:12:56):
the transcription feature Superman. It's aplane, It's Superman. Yes, it's
Superman. Strained visitor from the planetRepton, who came to earth its powers
and abilities far beyond bolls of partialMan. Superman who can leads tall buildings

(02:13:18):
at a single bound race, offeeding bullet to its target, then steel
in his bare hands, and whodisguised as Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter
for a great Metropolitan newspaper, fightsa never ending battle for truth and justice,
and now there are stories the legendof the fight. Plague, a
strange superstition of the frozen Nods, has been terrorizing the Bottlet logging camp where

(02:13:41):
Clark Kent and young Jimmy Owsen arevacationing. When we last saw Kent,
he and Fred Harmon, middle agedboss of the camp, were alone in
the camp office. Suddenly Kent realizedit was getting dark and wondered what had
happened to Hammond's daughter Nancy and JimmyOlson, both of whom had gone out
look at some young raccoons tend upbehind the cabin. Kent investigated the found
no sign of them, However, their footprints were clearly visible in the snow

(02:14:03):
and seemed to point in the directionof a pine forest about a quarter of
a mile behind the logging camp.Puzzled and worried, Ken and Harmon followed
the footprint until they suddenly and mysteriouslystopped halfway between the camp and the forest.
For a moment, both men werespeechless. Then Kent said, but,
mister Harmon, they never got tothe woods. He's footprint and abruptly

(02:14:24):
right out here in the open. But it's impossible camp so must have gone
back or turned off and walked inanother direction. Those are the only footprints
in the snow besides our own camped. It's fantastics. Nancy and Jimmy couldn't
just vanish. Where did they go? According to these footprints, there's only
one place they could have gone,up in the air. Can't please,
This is no time for jokes. In another ten menues, it will be
fixed dark Nancy. Nancy, you'dbetter go back to camp. Mister Harmon,

(02:14:50):
check all the cabins. Jimmy hasan insatiable curiosity. He might have
talked Nancy to take him on aswerve of inspection. I'll look through the
pine wood. Wait a minute, someone's coming. Oh it's you, Dawson.
Even Okay, something wrong, FundyDawson, Nancy and kept boy Jimmy
have disappeared. I think they justwanted apins to Dawson probably find them in

(02:15:11):
one of the loggers cabins during thefast. I wish I was that optimistic.
Look at those footprints of the snow, Dawson and Lancy's and Jimmy.
See how they stopped short back. No, they didn't turn back. That's
funny. Gotta lead somewhere. That'swhat frightens me. They don't. I
look the storm. I mean,you mustn't. Let's go. I'm just
as concerned as you are. Butwe'll find them. You and Dawson check

(02:15:35):
the cabins. I'll search the wood. No man in his right mind goes
into the woods alone after dark,Mister ken up with the wolves. Hungry
as they are, wolves, don'tbother me. You check the cabins,
and I say, look Ethn,give me a shold up. Can't don't
go in there alone. I hadbetter go with them. Mister Harmon,
you wrap the run out and havethem search to the east woods and pairs.
I'll go along with Kent. Allright, all right, hold up,
Kent, I'm coming with you.Worry too much about me. You

(02:16:00):
don't know the north Woods during abad winter, mister Kenton, even a
hungry poxhall charge your man. Comeon, what do you make of all
this, Dawson, I don't know. Don't seem human. Oh it's human,
all right. I didn't tell you, but Jimmy and I came close
to losing our lives when we drovethat sled back to camp today. Wow,
someone fired at us from the woods. That was human, all right.

(02:16:22):
That's what you can count on.Legends, even important ones like the
White Play can't pull the trigger ofa high powered rifle. I mean,
someone actually shot at you and theboy trying to hit you. That's just
what I mean. And the riflehe used was the same one your logging
crew took along on the job today. Just a minute, Kent, if
you're insinuating of one of mine,I'm not continuating anything, mister Dawson.

(02:16:43):
I'm staying cold fact. Oh,since you know what rifles used, maybe
you know who used No, Idon't, at least at the moment.
I'll find out, Dawson. IfI have to stay here, until the
snow melt. Huh, now herewe are at the edge of the woods.
You see any tracks? Oh no, don't out no woods can't Nancy.
No better than to go into thatthick pine at night. Jimmy,

(02:17:09):
Jemmy, that can be heard forover a mile. If there's no answer.
When I heard something moving through thebrush, woodchuck. Likely that's fine,
full of them, Jimmy, MissHarmon, When was that kind of

(02:17:33):
like? Shot rifle from the car? Come on to beat it back?
Yeah? Do you think shooting?Don't know? Back at the office.
Can alright? The deep snowdrip theother night, follow me? Nice?
Wait a minute, if someone's stayingin the rifle pan, he's carrying a
rifle. Old there, it's redHarmon. I miss it. I'm sure

(02:17:58):
I missed it. Miss what Harmon? I heard its wings beaking. I
rushed into a rifle. Of thetime I came out again, I could
barely see it. Are you talkingabout, mister Harmon? It was like
an eagle camp's only bigger a whiteego. I think you'd better go in
time, mister Harmon. Oh no, wait, if I come back,
I shot at it twice, butI'm sure I missed it. Go with
me. You think I'm mad, don't you? Well I'm not. I

(02:18:20):
thought as clearly as I see youand I heard its wings it was big
enough to lift the man from theground. Do you hear big enough to
lift the man? Please? It'sharm I know it sounds mad, but
believe me it's the truth. Lookwhat's that sticking up on the slow bank?
No, over there, it's afeather, large white feathers. How
you see now? Do you believeme? Let me see it? Kem,

(02:18:43):
Yeah, that's a father all right. And look at the size of
it. Look at it? Toobig for an eagle feather, even a
tail. Will I told you I'dhad a ten foot wingspread. It was
big enough to carry a man off. Chanty. You don't know what that
means. He's got a crack.Any minute down, doesn't come into his
cat and I'll be right back.It needs But nat I know what it

(02:19:05):
means that Superman has to step in. I'm sure Harmon must be mistaken,
but I can't take any chances. If there is a bird that big up
in the sky, I'll find itand away Frankness. Brand names for Harmon

(02:19:26):
will make you feel better. No, I don't want it, but it
can't go d I don't know.He said he'd be back bost footprints on
the snow, Natty's and Jimmy's.Remember how they ended abruptly? Remember?
Remember? Yeah, I take thisbrand names for DAWs. Send a man

(02:19:48):
into town. I want to wearremister Barkley. We're closing the camp dosin.
I can't stand it any longer.Oh right, I send a man
name here, Frankness. I don'tmake your feel the better. What time
is it, Dawson? I don'tknow, farm when I haven't got the
watch. There's the clock in theback room. Bring it in here,

(02:20:11):
Oh, I hold, I putit on the table. What time is
it? Eight fifteen? It's darkout, isn't it pitch dark? Yeah?
Nancy and the boy are out therein the darkness. We may never

(02:20:33):
see them again, Dawson. Neverno sign of any giant bird yet.
I know this is all a wasteof precious time, But I've got to
satisfy myself that Harmon was just madwith anxiety, and yet his story of

(02:20:56):
the bird and those footprints and thesnow match perfectly. Wait, what's that
down below me? In the forestCleary. Smoke pouring out of a chimney.
That's strange. Austin told me thatwasn't a human being within five miles
of the camp. I think I'lldrop down and investigate down down there.

(02:21:18):
It's a log cabin, no lightinside, but there must be a fire
burning. I'd as well look intoit as Clark Kent. It doesn't look
like there's anyone home. I wonderwhether the door is locked. No,
it's open. Hello, is anyonein? It's not way? Someone stretched

(02:21:48):
out on a cot. What why? Nancy Harmon And there's Jimmy in another
cot see now and they're both breathing, even me, and they're not hurt.
It's going to be asleep, Jimmy, Jimmy, wake up? Nothing
doing? I don know what them? Have they been drugged. I'm going
to get the back to camp assoon as possible and have to fly with

(02:22:11):
Superman. All right, we areone on to reach arm out the door?
Oh away, what time is it? Auson? You just stands fay

(02:22:35):
Mister Harmer nine twenty five can't hasn'tcome back yet. No, just send
him into the town to get thewire. Rossulston, aren't you? But
why not. What are you waitingfor? I think we'd better wait til
mister can't get spray? Why?I don't know. How was that wind
for a storm coming up? Idon't think. So take a look outside.

(02:22:56):
Okay, can Nancy maybe easy?Mister Harmon here, give me a
hand with your door. Put Matthewon the couch that he's here is big
enough for Jimmy? Fine, that'sfine. Can they're dead? No?

(02:23:22):

Heart's Landing? That's fifty miles. What's the matter with them? Camp?
Were they hurt? No? No, they won't. Heard that they're all
right? They seem to have beendrugged. No doctor there that hearts landing?
Oh but all them alone? Atmove who knows a lot about treating
the stick, He does it allthe time. Send someone for him at

(02:23:43):
