just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
and that's with the US Marshall and the Smell of
Gun Smoke. Gun Will Smoke, starring William Conrad. The story

(00:41):
of the violence that moved west with Young America, The
story of a man who.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Moved with it.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Matt Dillon, United States Marshall. Yeah, reports finished, mister Dillon.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Good you better go on home, Nonchester. It's getting late. Yes,
Oh what about these new Dodgers. I'll just leave them there,
I'll look them over. What's the matter, mister Dillon? You
got company at the back door? I come in.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Listen, get your paws off of me.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
A girl, I'm a girl.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
What do you think I am?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Put that long rifle away and I'll tell you. But
you get that thing anyway.

Speaker 5 (01:56):
Pappy brought it with him in Kentucky. If it's any
of your business, which it ain't, by during side, Uh huh.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
What you're doing hanging around in the alley, Get.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Rid of him there and a little job about.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
It, let's see, uh Chester, good night, m Well.

Speaker 6 (02:18):
But I'm not going there, yes, sir, good night, mister Dylon.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
My name's Hannah. Hannah told me you rest pokes, don't.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
You, Oh, if they've committed a crime.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
Yeah, well then I got somebody for you to arrest.
Oh why because I said too, That's why somebody's been
trying to kill him.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
I figure about the safest place for hims in jail.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Oh wait a minute, slow down, Let's start at the beginning. Huh.

Speaker 5 (02:58):
A few days ago, Patty, he was bushwhacked up in
the hills near our place.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh was he hurt?

Speaker 4 (03:03):
No, slug just bounced off in his head.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
A little yesterday the bushwhacker tried again.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
He missed.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Sounds like a bad shot. Sure, but if.

Speaker 5 (03:13):
He keeps trying, he may get lucky. So you put
Pappy in jail until I can run down this ambush.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
And gent, okay, you planned to cross guns with him yourself.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
I may be a girl, but I was barking squirrels
while you were still trying to dinner.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
Tin can.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Well, you better let me take care of it. Miss.
And as uh for your father, I can't jail him
without a charge, sure, I know that.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
What kind of a charge do you want?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Well, what kind do you have?

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Most any? I reckon? Ain't it enough that he's drunk
all the time?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
No I can hold him overnight.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
On that What if he shoots up the town and that's.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Five days for disturbing the peace?

Speaker 4 (03:55):
That'll do?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Where did he do this shooting?

Speaker 4 (03:58):
We ain't.

Speaker 5 (03:59):
Yeah, he's down at the Elephagaanza, slopping up booze that
other old buzzer jingle bob.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
The swamper, Yeah, that's one.

Speaker 5 (04:07):
You'd best be somewheres around the saloon in a few minutes.
I got a feeling Pappy's about do to bust the
log again.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Her story didn't make much sense, but there was something
about the Mountain girl's gleaming black eyes and the set
of her pretty but stubborn face that made me go
to the aleph Aganza. At the bar, I ordered a
glass of rye and watched two be whiskered old timers
trying to outlie each other over a rapidly emptying bottle.

Speaker 7 (04:43):
Yes, a jingle ball ugis wait and see Gedtolman's gonna
have the biggest den horse ranch in Kansas come and spring.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
We're sure, abslutely and.

Speaker 7 (04:55):
Me why I I reconnilejuice, buy off this year.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Your line?

Speaker 4 (05:02):
We're sure, ain't you?

Speaker 7 (05:06):
What's my money worth spending in it? How many times
I gotta tell you I'm getting rich? Yes?

Speaker 4 (05:12):
Here, you don't.

Speaker 7 (05:14):
If I ain't iven wasting a sort of time. Now
leave me alone, daughter, go home where you belong.

Speaker 5 (05:21):
I'm going only come over to tell you, man, bat
me ten dollars.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
You couldn't shoot out that lamp on the first shot?

Speaker 3 (05:28):
What's there?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Give me that right here? All right, hold on, that's
enough of that. Stay back shut huh.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Now, Jersey, go collect your ten dollars. Daughter.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
Yeah, Patty, but I think the marshal here's a fixing
to arrest you, ain't your marshall?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, I guess I am. All right? Come along, Joe, come.

Speaker 7 (05:53):
On, why get your ham h you're jailing a man
for having a little phone while you never get away
with these back and kin took it.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Jed, You're in trouble, aren't you. Who's trying to kid you?

Speaker 8 (06:12):
No?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Reckon? That's my business. Now, that's the laws business.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
I'll take care of myself.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Won uh Huh. Back in the salon there, you mentioned
having money and getting more so from what I've heard
you and your daughter run a two bad horse ranch
up in the hills that hardly figures to make you rich.
So you thick headed'll look, all I'm doing is trying

(06:38):
to save your skin if it's in danger, I why
don't you help me instead of being wrecking doing water?
Well that's plain enough, Morning Chester.

Speaker 6 (07:02):
Morning, mister Dylon.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You better take a look at this new dodger ah
wanted for robbery and murder Vic Tolman. So that murderous
gun hawk is loose again.

Speaker 6 (07:15):
Broke out of prison last week. If he's kin to
Jed and Toleman, he'll like to be heading this way.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Ill likely, I'll give you a hunch, Chester, I think
he's here already. You do you know where he is now?
Not exactly, but I expect Hannah Tolman may have an idea.
That's where I'm heading.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
Now, that's what I like to see, a man sized appetite.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
This wonderful cord phone.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Now, I'm a good cook, been cooking for Pappy ever
since Ma died ten years ago.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Take pretty good care of it.

Speaker 5 (08:03):
Somebody has to. Pappy's kind of shiftless reckon. He'd starve
if I didn't feed him. Only things he cares about
her wild horses.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
And booze and a pen. You'd give up horses.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
You know you're quite a woman, Hannah. You're pretty brave
and there's more courage than most men. I know.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
Too quick, Marshall. Why you're sweetening me up for some reason?

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Not that I mind.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
You understand I'm partial to a strapping fellow like you,
and Pappy's always after me to get hitched up because
it ain't fitting for me to be twenty two without
a man.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Oh, you're still young, not the mountain folk.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
I'm no old maid, and I'm agreeable for some sweet talk.
I don't trust yours. What are you after?

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Marshall? All right, Hannah, I only want the truth about what.
Where's your father getting this money he's spending? Wish I
knew who shot at him?

Speaker 4 (09:12):
I don't know, but I'm aiming to find out where's Vic.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Where's he hiding? Hannah? Who Vic Toleman? Your brother? Or
maybe he's your cousin brother? Where I don't know, Hannah,
be sensible, Vic some murderer.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
It's my ken we to don't turn on each other.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
If you seller him, you're guilty.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Of Morshall I reckon, you just wore out. You're welcome and.

Speaker 9 (09:53):
If prisoner will stand up and face me, Jed telemen,
you've been found guilty or disturbing the peace. Sentence of
this court is five days in jail or one hundred dollars.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
One hundred or judge, ain't out of much steep, just for.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
One hundred dollars or five days.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
I ain't got that much on me, but I can
get it, iff, and you let me.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Go for a minute. All are in the court. Oh,
what's the meaning of this interruption? I want to pay
this man's fine, you, honor, that's your privlecer. One hundred
dollars pay the clerk. Yes, sir, Dick Curry, somebody's been

(10:45):
turning over rocks. Well I don't know him, but this
shore friend look clock, I ain't going with you, Marshall.
Yeah it looks like but in your boots, I wouldn't
be happy. Curry is one of the worst killers yet, unhung, Oh,
talk about me. I'm clear with a law. Hell I,
mister Toman, go ahead, Jed, and uh say hello to

(11:08):
Vic for me Vic.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
No, mister Kurr, is that true?

Speaker 2 (11:14):
What's the difference? Who put out the hundred.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Come on, No, no, not I an it's vic No.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You can't make me, I said, come on, Marshall, don't
let him take me. I shut up and come on
before I hurry. Stay out of this, marsh I don't
think so. You paid his fine, you didn't buy him.
He's going with me, Matt, don't try to stop me.
I can't imagine anything that will give me more pleasure.
You don't like living, do you very much? Now? Just

(11:44):
any time you feel like it. No, not hearing, Matt.
I'll pick my spot. Yeah, I'll try not to turn
my back on any dark alleys. Do that and tell
me I want to see you again.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
We'll return for the second act of gun Smoke in
just a moment. But first strength against aggression calls for guns, tanks, planes,
and explosives in tremendous quantity. It calls for other things too,
Moral strength based on equality of opportunity for all, and
economic strength, which today can be based only on continued

(12:41):
high output of civilian goods. America must produce as she
never has before war, material, civilian goods, and democracy. Only
an all out effort in all three directions will give
us security against aggression. Now the second act of guns smoke.

Speaker 8 (13:23):
Some starting Marshal, why don't we play while we wait?

Speaker 2 (13:27):
No, thanks, tinkle, Bob, and even wait with us.

Speaker 8 (13:31):
Jed, my friend mister dog.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Sure, I mean I can't.

Speaker 8 (13:35):
Help him none, but at least I can share whatever
trouble is. Understand now, Jed, here's a line old ringtail
drunk but me when a man is down.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
To scrubbing saloon floors just.

Speaker 8 (13:55):
To get the liquor that will keep his nerves shaking,
the part he's grateful for any friendship Its over.

Speaker 10 (14:07):
Don't move, Curry, get his gun.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
You recognize me, Martin, Yeah, Vic Tolman. There are dodgers
out on you.

Speaker 10 (14:24):
You're a cool and Dylan too bad.

Speaker 11 (14:26):
We're on the opposite sides of a tan.

Speaker 12 (14:28):
Yeah, it's too bad, real pity. Now, I'm gonna enjoy
this job.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
What job?

Speaker 12 (14:34):
Why don't you know Thick's taking is Paul away from you?
You won't mind. He'll be dead.

Speaker 13 (14:41):
Curry used to take care and take care of these two.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Jed and I go on ahead.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Oh shun shun. I don't want to go nowhere.

Speaker 11 (14:48):
Now, Paul, don't rile me.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
You're going with me?

Speaker 2 (14:51):
None of you are going to any place, Victim.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
Check reach, hide both of you, and let go of
that hardware.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Now you better do as he says, because Chester is
a little nervous with that shot done, that's mine. Looks
like the odds are with you, so you might as
well get rid of that spear in your boot, Victor
before you run into any temptations.

Speaker 11 (15:20):
You got sharp eyes, Marshall. Low gets a lot of
backing up tonight.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
You're a mistake, Victor. Sometimes people just don't give Chester
enough credit.

Speaker 11 (15:45):
A child time, Yes, deep steak, fried potatoes, stew corn Marshall,
I must say, you run a nice jail. Don't eat Carr,
don't mind Kurk. He's a little depressed about last night.

Speaker 10 (16:03):
You still run a nice jaw.

Speaker 13 (16:06):
Something on your mind.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Marshall, M Yeah, A couple of things, such as ah
such as your father is spending money he hasn't earned,
claiming to know where he can get more. Paul's your
terrible liar, such as him getting shot at twice and

(16:28):
refusing to talk about it or help me investigate. Paul's
a little bashful too, such as his being afraid of you.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
I guess Paul's getting old little dottery.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, and of course there's you.

Speaker 11 (16:47):
Well, now you're on my favorite subject.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Go on, Ah, you're a killer and a thief, but
you're cool and smart, smart enough to educate yourself.

Speaker 11 (17:00):
I had lots of time to read in the pen,
lots of time.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
You're gonna have more, but not much more. But you're
gonna hang for those guards that you killed.

Speaker 11 (17:11):
Maybe curry at you're gonna eat that.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Now, going about me being smart, you're smart enough to
know the most dangerous place for you to go after
you escaped was here.

Speaker 6 (17:25):
It looked like I ain't as smart as you think.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
It depends on what reason you had for risk and
coming here.

Speaker 11 (17:32):
Boy, that's your good coffee, first jail, I was ever
in where the coffee was fit to drink.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Thank you, okay, Marshall, just what was my reason? The
reason was money, money, cash, It's the only thing that'd
give you a chance to get out of the country.
You're in for a robbery as well as murder. How
much of the look was recovered?

Speaker 11 (17:57):
You know how it is, Marshall, The usually come easy go.
I spent it as fast as well, nil.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
As fast as I got it, So nothing was recovered. No,
it was all gone. It was all hidden you mean
hidden until Jed found it? Paul sure, that's his source
of money. It's also when he was afraid to go.

Speaker 11 (18:18):
With you, like I said, too bad. We're on opposite sides.
You got brains and you use them.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
You want to fell in the details for.

Speaker 11 (18:27):
Me, I'll tell you this. You're right about my casual money.
I'd had it and be on my way to Mexico
by now. Paul had him switched hiding places on me.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
You know it hurts. Paul's turning against me. Yeah, yeah.
The Tolmans always stick together, except when money's involved.

Speaker 11 (18:49):
How about you Markham money by you Sky's limit. I'm sorry,
I'll figure it now. Well, been a nice chat. Won't
take his trait?

Speaker 10 (19:08):
Sorry, give me a.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
High out, all right? Back up, Curry and that's it,
and tell Vic when he wakes up, take it easy.
He won't live to be hung. Hey, Jingle Bob, you've

(19:41):
seen Jed.

Speaker 8 (19:42):
Sorry, Marshall, I don't know where Jed it is. Been
looking for him myself.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Call him cool, mister lefton last night.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
He ain't too cool.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
I got an old jacket you can have.

Speaker 8 (19:55):
I'd rather have a shot. Better still, two shots?

Speaker 2 (19:59):
You got the jumps always.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Got him, except one for booge.

Speaker 8 (20:03):
Fine, you won't believe it, but there was a time
when I couldn't stand The taste of hard liquor made
me sick. No, I can't live with order.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
Yes, she can remember lit share no water, let's say that. Here,
go buy yourself a drink quick?

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Hey, he answer, enough for a whole bottle?

Speaker 7 (20:27):
Where we change you?

Speaker 10 (20:28):
See you later, Lord shop.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Supper time Chester, Chester, Chester. All right, the prisoner's.

Speaker 6 (20:47):
Gone, Hannah Towman slipped in a gun and they made
me open up the cell and Vic slugged me.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
And I know where they'll go.

Speaker 6 (20:56):
Please, mister Dunn take me along.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
It was my fault they escaped, all right, Chester asked doctor.
Put a quick patch on that head, and we'll go
after him together. Starting to get dark, Yeah, why do

(21:26):
we leave the road back there? I wanted to reach
that rise, Chester.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
But we circled around to come up to the backside.

Speaker 10 (21:34):
Does that have.

Speaker 6 (21:35):
Something to do with you bringing binoculars?

Speaker 2 (21:37):
Yeah it does, Victolmon will know he will be followed.
I want to see what kind of a surprise he
has for us. All right, pull up you wait here.

Speaker 10 (21:55):
H see anything?

Speaker 2 (22:00):
No, not yet no way I know. Now, Yeah, it's
Curry all right, he's hold up in some brush just
beyond the turn and the road down there.

Speaker 10 (22:18):
Well, what do we do, mister Dylon.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Uh, take the horses and circle back the way we came.
Start up the road, but don't make the turn. I
now be sure as long as you don't make the turn,
you'll be safe. But uh, I do want you to
make some noise. Noise, yeah, I want you to sing, whistles,
throw rocks, anything, just so long as that holds Curry's attention.

(22:47):
It was slow work crawling down through the brush, but
finally I was only ten feet behind Curry's position. The
gunman was holding a rifle trained on the turn and
out of side. Coming up the road, I could hear
Chester and he wasn't good, but he was loud. Got

(23:13):
around that turn, blast you all right, don't turn around, Corry.
But you may have a point. But I like Chester
bad singing and oil, and I lay the rifle aside
and unbuckle your gun belt, and I careful, a sure sure,
only don't shoot, Okay, Chester Chester. It didn't mean no harm.

(23:38):
I was only going to scare him.

Speaker 12 (23:40):
Yeah, I was vic at the tomb in the house,
waiting for Jed to show.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
Uh huh, all right, put your hands behind your back
and I'm gonna tie you up and leave you here.
Leave me here and we'll pick you up on the
way back to town. It was dark when Chester and I
were moving through the trees up to the Toeman shack.
There was a light in the front. Through a window

(24:06):
we could see the figure of Hannah Tolman moving around,
just a girl. Vic's there. They just stand out of
sight so Jed won't be scared off. Uh.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
She's coming out hidding his way, and there must.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Be a well out here. She's carrying a bucket and
behind that tree. Quick, and I'll take this one.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
What do you think?

Speaker 2 (24:45):
All right? Not quiet down. We're not going to hurt you.
Stop fighting, Chester, grabber legs quick. I was saving these
handcuffs for a vict but I guess they'll do for
you there. How do you promise to be quiet or

(25:06):
do we gag you? All right? Have it your way? Chester,
give me your bandana. Yeah, that should do it, all right,
Stay with her, Chester, I'm going for vict. I was

(25:26):
halfway to the shack when inside Vic Tolbman became suspicious.
Suddenly the lights went up from the door open, and
the shadowy figures slipped out to stand listening.

Speaker 10 (25:41):
Annah.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Annah answered him, drop 'em, Vict, who is that? I
can't see Matt Dylan throw down those guns. You're under arrest,
not this time. Vic.

Speaker 13 (26:06):
You're right, Marshall. I lived it, Vic, mister Dawn over here?

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Hey, yeah, what is it? Chester? Who's that?

Speaker 10 (26:27):
Jed?

Speaker 3 (26:28):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (26:29):
I caught him sneaking towards the house.

Speaker 10 (26:32):
He was carrying his bag.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
Here. Let me see that's the money I was taking
it to? Vic? Is he? Yeah? You're too late, Jed?

Speaker 7 (26:42):
Oh no, okay, hard They give him his money. If
only he hadn't taken him shock Jed.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
He didn't until he found out where the money was hidden.
He was the last person in the world to want
you dead. But I don't understand he must not. Only
the person who knew where you had the money would
have shot at you.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
Nobody knew that. How could they?

Speaker 2 (27:06):
You talk a lot when you get drunk, Jad, You
only got drunk with one person.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
Huh you mean you mean Jingle Bob.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, yeah, I remember.

Speaker 7 (27:20):
I was bragging, told him all about finding it and
switching hiding places.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Row down snake and him pretending to be my friend.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
Come on, Jaid, I'll help you very thick. Then we'll
get back to Dodge. We told him, I'm sure have
had a bad week.

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
