(00:03):
Are you willing to undertake a dangerousmission behind the enemy lines knowing you may
never return alive to what you havejust heard? Is the question asked during
the war to agents of the OSS. Ordinary citizens due to this question answered
(00:24):
yes. This is Cloak and Dagger, Black Warfare, SPNRDS International Intrigue.
(00:48):
These are the weapons of the OSS. Today's adventure direct Line to Bombers.
The story of an American OSS agentwho, during the height of the war,
directed from the streets of Berlin anAmerican attack is suggested by actual incidents
recorded in the Washington files of theOffice of Strategic Services, a story that
can now be told. After youget back from a mission, you sit
(01:23):
around and there's nothing to do butsit around. So that's what I did.
Set in a room in Milton Halland England, where OSS agents had
trained, I thought about the restauranton Sixth Avenue I wanted to open after
the war. I was never subored in my life. Yeah, Hey,
(01:45):
yeah, Nikki, the colonel wantsto see it. Very important.
Okay, Pal, tell my palthe colonel. I'll be there and win
the war for him. That episodeall began November nineteen forty four after that,
I didn't have time to be bored. I know you've just come back
(02:15):
from a mission in France, Lieutenant, so it's strictly after you if you
want to go out again immediately.Oh now, listen, I mean,
Colonel, If I have to sitaround here and do nothing, I'll blow
my tongue. You speak German?Don't you well enough to know that Hitler
speaks a lousy German. It's fullof grammatical errors. If I see him,
I'll tell him man, he maybe closer to him than you think,
(02:37):
Barbara, Yes, send in ProfessorWarburg. And that's how I met
the professor, This little guy witha beard. He weighed about as much
as ten cents worth of liver. He reminded me of my chemistry teacher back
in Lincoln Junior High School, ProfessorTower, Lieutenant or less Nicholas. Just
(02:57):
what you call me? Is itthe greatest? Though? Lieutenant? I
am an escaped political prisoner of theNazis, and I am here in England
illegally. And you just walked intoheadquarters and told that to the colonel.
Do you know you can be inturned? I know that very well,
But I can no longer sit byand be idle while I have a plan
(03:21):
that I know can help the alliesof what Professor Warber suggests, Lieutenant is
that he be parachuted into Germany withanother agent, make his way to Berlin.
I assure you I can move aboutBerlin blindfolded. I know it well.
Berlin. This could be interesting. What then, then, we say,
(03:42):
radio transmitter. We could pinpoint militarytargets to American claims overhead. We
could direct bombs from the streets ofBerlin itself. Wait a minute, walk
around with a walkie, talking inthe middle of a raid, carrying on
conversation with bombers. When do weleave? I am ready any time today,
(04:03):
tomorrow, yesterday. Professor may havebeen ready yesterday, but the oss
wasn't. The person who were briefedfor weeks how to get food coupons in
Berlin, how to buy a railroadticket, how to post a letter,
how to greet a German officer inthe street, Little things, an American
(04:27):
cigarette, an English match, alaundrymark to give us away. And there
were big things too. We weregrowed for hours on cover stories. Forgeries
became documents, fiction became facts, passed the stamps signature, everything authentic,
everything else ots, including my mannersand habits. So I was ready to
(04:48):
pass as a citizen of Berlin. And then a plane took us high over
German soil and we jumped. Theymade it nikki. So if you kill
(05:14):
me, mister Berlin, we canwalk it. Make it before daylight.
We should find the farmer who ownsthis field and say donkash for providing us.
It's so ideal a landing thing.Yeah, we'll send them a letter
sometime. Right now, let's getout of here where you are. I
hardly keep your hands to the airunless you want it. I blow your
heads up. Let my dog tearyou to bit when a good dog keeping
(05:41):
so still? Unless your farmer professorused to want to say, do this
still top you? You have madea mistake. My friend, my companion
and I got lost trying to findthe road. We came by accident on
your field. That's right, weboth of us only recently, just yards
from the army. If you wouldcare to see our papers right here in
(06:01):
his napsot, I can't. Ifyou want to kill your hearts up,
I would let your dog go foryour trope. I do not care to
see your papers. I show youhow you I'm an American. Praise.
Oh oh, now to the barn. R will see to that. You
stay there, won't you roll? The German's Bama left us in the barn,
(06:29):
and he didn't have to lock thedoor. That big black dob woman
with the impatient fans watched us asif he wanted us to make a move
so we could jump. Oh.If we get out of this, my
friend as he'll never hit the headdog over, professor, don't move,
don't turn your head, just listento me. Yeah, I'm not listening.
There's some harnessed straps hanging on ahook right over my head. I
noticed them when I came in.If I can pull him down fast enough,
(06:53):
I throw them over the dog whenhe leaps. Try to on tanky,
but i'll see horse blankets near you. When I pull down the straps,
throw the bar, get over him. It's gotta be fast, out
of work. I'm ready. I'mthree. Then one nice boy, nice
nice big ugly mud. Two.Three. The harness caught on the nails.
(07:17):
I tried to put it down onthe dog, and then the nail
came off too. The scraps fellacross the dog's snout. Professor flung the
blankets over the dog's head. Ihave him, Nikky, but I can't
hold him. The shove him theways I'd shovel myself off. Honey,
Honey, I can't hold him now. I hid him my gain, and
(07:39):
suddenly the only sound in the barnwas the dog front of the show.
The dog didn't move make a sound. He never would again. He said,
better get out now, guy, let's go. Ah. The smell
(08:07):
of a bakery is always good. How fortunate it is. I have only
this morning made seth for cooking Joseph, just to be always likely. How
good to see you again, Anna. I told my friend Nikki that you
would take us in help button notdearly, Nikki. I will do anything
(08:28):
I care. We may stay herethen, Anna, if all goes well,
we believe right after the rain tomorrownight, Yeah, twenty four hours
all we need. Of course youmissed it. I still live about the
bakery. There is an extra room. My grandson Emil will not be all
from the use camp for a week? Yok? What could I do,
Nikky? What could anyone do inthese days? In the limba ride with
(08:50):
the winning until there is a chanceto fight against it. Helping you and
your mission will give me my chance. Little Emil years ago seemed like only
yesterday. I used to sit withhim on my lap here on this bakery
and twirl my gold watch on thechain for him. Now, remember Anna,
how he laughed? Yeah, Iremember. He has forgotten you by
(09:13):
now, and you would not knowhim. He's thirteen years old. Thirteen
years old, already they have poisonedhis mind. I cannot get to him.
I do not dare. He's alittle parrot speaking only what is taught
him. Nikki, some more coffee, No, thank you, proud like
a cool or astrud especialty of myshop upstrud No. Six years ago,
(09:39):
at this very table, I hadEmela on my lap when the guest Rappo
walked in and arrested me. Theydid not like, but I taught him
their school. What's their? Soone's coming? I don't know who it
can be. Customers never come bythis lake. I'm not a surprise.
I'm homer any what this man emi? Your manners? These our friend just
(10:05):
the passing, the mean They justthink the night this is her? Noither
can her use it? Oh?Yes, of course, Hitler, I
did not expect him until next week. Came here. How did you have
here so early? I want agreat honor, which I want to tell
you about. I did not knowI'd have to share to a stranger.
(10:28):
Shame amy. These men are weresoldiers of the fatherland. Yeah, yes,
Emil, we were both with theelite god of one of Ramo's Panza
divisions. Yes, that is beforewe received by our medical discharge. Sit
down, my bush, I willbring you something to eat. Yes,
don't you want to hear about theanna I received? Look on matter on
(10:50):
my sleeve that swastik read for theyouth movement and a swastika because I learned
my lessons faster than the others. The commanded jupid the whole youth movement awarded
me my swastika, and he toldme I could take my vacation a week
early. Are you proud of me? Grandmother? Yeah, my boy,
Yeah, let me get you somethingto eat. And I'm too tired going
(11:16):
up to bed. Grandmother said, you're staying here? Will I see you
in the morning, gentlemen, Well, I'm not sure. Oh, they
will be here now that you arehoming me. I'll just sleep on the
couch and give them my room.Oh, it is all right, it
is set good. Perhaps then, hey, yours, if you will hear
me about Rahma a great leader?Yes, yes, perhaps we will see
(11:39):

came in grandmother, Have I methim here? No? No, Emil,
(12:01):
Hey you that was here before youwere born, even you have never
seen him. It has been years, fifteen, maybe before you were born,
I suppose, so. Good night, professor. He wouldn't remember what
(12:24):
he Oh how could he, Nikki, He was a baby that last day
I saw him, barely five yearsold, and the professor was thirty pounds
heavy, A clean and clean shade. Yeah, yeah, Anna is right,
NICKI do not worry he could notremember. Do not worry. But
(12:48):
I couldn't help worry. I layawake half the night thinking about that kid
in the room next door, thethirteen year old puppet with a new red
swastika. Feeling. I had afunny kind of feeling at the pit of
my stomach that made me wish they'dkept him in that youth camp until after
we were gone. When I gotup, the sun had been up for
(13:15):
hours, and so I had theprofessor. I went downstairs to the bakery.
There was a smell of fresh breadbaking, and I knew for our
light nose in the kitchen. Butthe Professor was sitting at the table,
swinging his watch on the gold chainand talking to that German quiz kid.
But why do you want to know? Oh, I haven't just seen that.
I want to see how well youhave earned that swastika. I stood
(13:37):
on the stairs and listen. He'sthe greatest man who ever was or will
be. When I joined a feworganization, the man in Chad said,
join the organization, but this forwardforward the banalito to eternity. You have
loved your lessons yours. Are yousure I have never seen you before?
(14:00):
Of course not, my boy,I seemed to leave there. Hey,
Yoseph, ah, good morven head, nois day. Since we're just passing
through Berlin, don't you think weought to see a few of the sites
before we leave. Yeah, yeah, you're right. We will leave now.
Perhaps later, Emil, we willtalk more. Was scheduled for that
(14:28):

arrangements to meet about four thirty thatafternoon at the Tavern Ndlan Passa. We
went separate ways. I did alot of walking, and I made a
lot of notes in my head. The kleen Bird power plant was still functioning.
The Court's junction of the city railroadhad been repaired. There was an
(14:52):
ammunition dump on the north side thatobamas couldn't see from the air. It's
a nice day out of Germans werewalking the streets, and I made a
lot of notes in my head. You vished all now many nine and later.
(15:16):
I am waiting for a friend.Professor was fifteen minutes late, and
I started getting nervous. Maybe somebodyhad recognized him. I sat there and
sweated it out fifteen minutes, twentyminutes, half hour, and then he
finally came. But he wasn't alone. Hell noida. This is half Manila,
(15:41):

my friend. There is a reservoirnear the rail line. I was looking
around. I think he was alittle suspicious at first, but then I
(16:30):

to believe I was in Africa myselfjust the same. I wish you could
have shaken him. What did youfind out? It was a profitable afternoon,
and you a profitable afternoon. Goover, it comes text across.

It seems strange to me that here, Joseph, here should show so much
interest in the rest of you.I was nearly taking a stroll and getting
reacquainted with Berlin, and then Iwatched you. I saw you walk down

the table. I'm halfway into theGerman off good. I was stupid to
get myself into that germ in thefirst place. We're not out of this
yet. Waiter now my hair checkplease. My friend has had a little
too much to drink. Who willtake him home? Yeah? Yeah,
(19:40):

The knife was still in him,so the blood didn't flow very much.
To get this tape around him, right, there is no one around.
