Six blackmail victims are invited to an isolated mansion by a man who knows a dark secret from each of their pasts. On arrival, each is given a pseudonym drawn from Cluedo before being introduced to the blackmailer. Each is handed a weapon, at which point the lights are switched off and the blackmailer is killed. Can the guests uncover the murderer before they all become victims? Brad Gilmore and Jeff Smith have a lot in common. Both are huge fans of the 1985 movie Clue, and both have made significant contributions to the film's legacy. Brad is the author of Back from the Future: A Celebration of the Greatest Time Travel Story Ever Told, and Jeff is the director of Who Done It: A Clue Documentary. In their new podcast, Clue the Movie Podcast, Brad and Jeff watch the movie one minute at a time and break it down. Along the way, they share behind-the-scenes stories, trivia, and their own personal insights. Whether you're a diehard fan of Clue or you've never seen it before, Clue the Movie Podcast is a must-listen.

(00:00):
Oh what have you done? AndI can't get into that position. Sure
they can, let me show yougo off mane. He's attacking her.

(00:26):
No, no, he's dead.Mister dead again. Oh my god,
she's going to think sorty cancer.Oh catch him, fall into my arms.
Sorry, you've got blood on yourhands. I didn't do it.
He's got new injuries. What isthat? He dead? Now? Why

(00:50):
would he know? I want tokill him twice? Seems so unnecessary.
That's what we call overkill, whatwe call a psychotic. Unless he wasn't
dead before, what's the difference. That's what we're trying to find out.
We're trying to find out who killedhim. I'm well, I'm hello everybody,

(01:11):
and welcome to Clue the Movie podcastand podcast where we break down the
nineteen eighty five could classic movie Clueone minute at a time. My name
is Brad Gilmour. Joined as always, Why the streaming Jeff Smith? Jeff,
how are we? Thank you?I'm doing great? Yeah, and
and we are we are not alone. We're we're here at the Cluevians.

(01:34):
And we're also here with another podcastingfriend of ours, you know him from
Laker Jim's Fletch cast. He isthe namesake himself Laker Jim like a Jim.
Welcome to the show. Hey boys, welcome, thanks for having me.
Yes man, We're excited to talkto you and and and and jump
into your fascination with Clue the Movie. I know you and I have exchanged

(01:57):
several messages about these films over thelast several months. I know, Laker
Jim, tell me, like, what's your background on Clue the Movie?
Where's it start for you? Well, Clue the Movie is definitely in my
top ten. It's probably right outsideof my top five. And you know,
being eighty five, I was probablyabout else seven or eight maybe when

(02:17):
I When I saw it, itwas one of those movies that played over
and over and on HBO, andjust a movie I loved as a kid,
and a movie that you know,I've continued to love my whole life.
And you and I and Jeff notonly do we share the love for
this movie, we share the lovefor Fletch as well, and people of

(02:38):
this podcast. No, we talkabout Back to the Future a lot.
And I always feel like, ifyou like one of these movies, you
like all of these movies. Butfor you, it's gone though past,
just a movie that you saw onHBO a lot, and it's into your
top ten. Like you've had Cluerelated things in your life, right,
haven't we dressed as Clue characters anddone the whole night? Yeah, friends

(03:00):
of mine, we we go allout for Halloween, and uh, particularly
the year we did Clue, wealso wrapped it into a baby reveal that
not everybody knew about. So uhso, yeah, we had we had
the whole thing. We go allout, a dressed the whole house up
like the Hill House and uh andwe had an evidence envelope that not no

(03:24):
nobody really knew what that was allabout. And uh, you know,
at the end of the night,we sort of revealed the evidence so to
speak of Colonel Musterden Vet scandalous. It had to be a vet, yes,
of course. Yeah. Oh well, of course I had addressed my
girl up like h Colin Cam.I mean, why not, it's probably

(03:47):
one time you could have that.Later I have questions because she was pregnant.
She had a little extra umph.Sure, got you got you,
got you got you man. Uhwell, well this we're excited to talk
to you about. Minute thirty nineis where you jump into this thing.
Now. I know you say you'vewatched this movie back and forth, back
and forth, so I don't thinkthat you're going to have any difficulties sticking

(04:11):
with us. And as we dissectthe minute, it was but Jeff,
let me start with you man aminute thirty nine. So it picked up
where we last saw them talking aboutthe negative of Colonel Mustard with the aforementioned
event. Yes, is there atwith child at this time? Is really
now the question of the day?Oh to it? It's a very sad

(04:33):
level if that's If that's the case, Um, it doesn't appear to be,
but you never know. We knowevery answer of everybody. I would
say, what this minute has?It starts great. I love Madelekan.
I've been really like high on madelonKan the last few weeks as we've been
watching these minutes. It's my onlyquote. There was an Empire magazine article

(04:58):
that just came out and it's it'sgetting a lot of traction online because people
found out there was a fourth inningof Clue. What a shock, and
a lot of different websites have beencarrying that. But I'm in it for
like two seconds and my only blurbis watch battling Cohn because she's great.
But I'm in there. Good, that's solid, it's well, I stand

(05:20):
behind it. I was quoted correctly. That's better than the Jerry Seinfeld blurb
that mentioned George you're a blurb.Um. I thought the blur off me,
Yeah, good, off me isgreat. So that's where I was
going. That line is fantastic andit's very It's a throwaway, and I

(05:41):
wonder. I know that the onlyline that gets credit for being an ad
lib is flames on the side ofmy face. But I have to wonder
if get off Me was an adlib as well, because it doesn't seem
like it would be written. Itseems like a very natural thing that you
would say to Christopher Lloyd if hewere trying to mount you, get off

(06:02):
me, I'd say it. So, Madeline consa first thing that jumps out
at you. Now, Jim joiningus at this moment in time, at
thirty nine minutes into the movie, obviously you know what comes before, what
stands out to you about this particularminute. I mean, I think,
if if you ask me minute thirtynine and I had them all memorized,

(06:26):
I think peacock falling through you knowhis arms arms is the memory I would
have a minute thirty nine that tome jumps out of me. And you
know what, And I don't knowif y'all can see as we were watching
the minute here that I've found outsomething about myself. And there's a journey
through Clue the Movie and doing theClue the Movie podcast by the minute.

(06:49):
The thing that I found out isI like physical comedy and three Studies stuff.
Every time there's one of those pratfallsor something like this, the miscommunication,
somebody eats it, there's the eyepoke. Um, I get the
biggest kick out of that. AndJim I wrote that down. I said,

(07:10):
you know, Pratt and fall fromPeacock because it was so funny to
me. Now we are trying tostill figure out where mister body is.
But but to go back to thenegative that they were examining after they said
nobody could be put into that position, and he said, yes, they
can. Let me show you getoff me and then we hear the scream
of missus Peacock and we see ColonelMustard take the negative from Miss Scarlett right

(07:38):
and then miss and then Wadsworth takesit from Colonel Mustard and puts it back
with the evidence envelope. So he'sstill got control of everything. This.
I mean, I feel like whenyou look at it, Jeff, he
is one the big bad of thismove. Yeah, he's I think I
think Wadsworth might be the killer inthe end. I'm gonna call it now,

(07:58):
you're calling that now. I thinkthe butler did it. Yeah,
so he does. And I alsolove Mustard's face a pride when he gets
it out of Yeah, that's it. I wish you could all see this.
Prad is doing an excellent Mustard impressionright now. Martin mull is here,
folks. Yeah, you just getthat. I got it. And
it's for like one second. It'sclassic Mustards. He's on top for a

(08:22):
second and then he loses it.There you go, Jim, Now being
this movie is in your top tenm We call the six main characters the
game piece characters. Who who areWe have two questions for you. One
out of when we find out kindof what they're all being blackmailed. Four
we're gonna start there with you.Okay, whom do you find to be

(08:46):
the most guilty doing the worst thing? And who do you find really we're
making a mountain out of a molehill as it were. Well, because
I'm a fan of the podcast andI've listened every episode, I haven't missed
one. I know you guys aboutthis before. Yes, even heard other
people's opinion on what what was crime? And I'm gonna have to say,

(09:11):
m h. We've got back andforth so this is not by Yeah,
yeah, we don't. Don't feellike you have to stay stand behind these
words. I mean, it's gotto be murder, right, I mean
it's pretty bad, got to bethe worst. Murder is the worst.
Murder is the worst. However, there's something really creeper. Everybody something creeper.

(09:31):
It's the worst. No plubs,Yeah, plubs pretty bad too.
And then he becomes a murderer dependingon but we're talking about before then,
so I rap until now this iswhy, Um, that's why, this
is why. Who killed her husband? Right, She's killed a few people
as far as we know. She'spretty nonchalant about it too. Yeah,

(09:54):
I guess I guess you. I'mgonna say her. I'm gonna say her.
That's fine. That's who we've goneback and forth on. It's gone
back I think correctly from row Bradit's been plumb, and it's been plumb
and white and white. Yeah,it's been plumbing white. Now, who
is your favorite of the six gamePiece characters? Because again, for me,
even though he is the worst inmy opinion, Professor Plumb being Christopher

(10:18):
Lloyd, I have an inherent biastowards like, I love Christopher Lloyd.
How can he not um being DocBrown? Do you have a favorite of
the six? Colonel Mussard is myfavorite? Yeah? Nice, Definitely Colonel
Mustard. Why, That's who Iwas when we when we played him on
Halloween. That's who I dressed upas. And in getting into that character,

(10:41):
that was really fun, you know, because he's kind of like a
you know, he's kind of likeadults, you know, he's kind of
like a clueless you know, yeah, you know, even like even when
he makes great points, he's sortof still clueless. He's sort of he's
sort of stupid even when he hasyeah, moments of of of of great
thought and genius as it were.Do you agree with this, Jeff?

(11:03):
Do you think that always forget Iforget the quote. And John Hatch,
the author of the Clue Book,I always have to ask him because he
remembers there's a quote that Martin Bullhad right when Clue came out that to
describe Colonel Mustard, if he werein an intelligence contest by himself, he
would still come in third place. That's how Martin Moule describes Colonel Mustard.

(11:28):
So yes, I agree that heis very fun. But see, I
also bring attachment from other movies. So I think you like plumb Brad because
Back to the Future, I'm ahuge fan of this is spinal tap.
So for me, Michael mckin coulddo no wrong and I like his just
his frantic assistance to anyone that willlisten, including this clip, which is

(11:52):
the second time we hear him sayingI didn't do it, even though he
has blood on his hands. NowI want to mention what he says I
did do it. The shot isframed so well that you can see the
candlestick above the door. And Idon't know about you guys. The very
first time I saw it, Ididn't see it when it finally drops,

(12:13):
and then I felt super dumb becausewhen you watch it again and again it
to get it again. It's theframing is so obvious. There's so much
headroom on on Wadsworth as he's standingin front of the bathroom that of course
it's right there, but somehow wemissed it. So it becomes it's a
great physical joke that's about to happennext week. So yeah, we'll get

(12:35):
to But Jim, did you everdid you notice it like early on the
candlestick or was it? I mean, I know you saw a movie a
long time, you know, whenyou were younger. No, it's not
something I ever noticed. Um,and I did always sort of wonder how
it got up there. This isthis is the real mystery of this.
Somebody's tall. Yeah, this isBrad. This is when Brad gets crazy.

(12:56):
No, I didn't have you literallyhave thought about this for ever and
I have no clear explanation of howit's gotten up there. But the only
thing that we can do is figureout who. So, Okay, we
know miss Scarlett receives the candlestick initially, Okay, we're trying to we're trying
to follow the chain of custody here. But then when everything, when everything

(13:20):
goes awry, they run into thecook what have you, what have you?
Um, things can get mixed up. But Jeff, to bring it
back, do you know what.I don't know if you know where I'm
going with this. Have we seenthe rest of the movie or have we
only seen up to We've seen thewhole movie. We've seen the whole movie.

(13:43):
We know who killed mister body andput them in the bathroom. It's
a vets, right, So sheclearly was trying to hide the evidence of
what she did to them. Buthow did she get it up there?
How did she get it up there? How did she drag him in there?
And how did she prop him upso that when the door gets opened

(14:05):
he falls on whoever? Like,I think if I were hiding some of
the bathroom, I would at leastlike set him up, like in the
sitting position, so if you openthe door, you'd be like, oh
goodness, I think that. Ithink what you got probably what she did.
She pushed him in, slammed thedoor, and his momentum hit that
they fell forward. Yeah, thatthat had to be. So how many

(14:28):
bathroom doors to the door when youopen it go towards you. I can't
think of any bathroom doors. Also, why did she have to get rid
of the body? Why did youhave to hide the body to create confusion?
So here's my grand theory. Whenthere is an answer, here's my
grand theory. I do think whatLaker Jim is saying is accurate, but

(14:54):
I do not think that she workedcompletely alone. Now in minute at thirty
seven, if memory serves me,correct or it could have been thirty eight,
But it's either thirty seven thirty eight. We spent quite some time pontificating
on the whereabouts and the delay ofthe arrival of Miss Scarlett back in the

(15:16):
back in the main room there whenthey just first discover mister Boddy's body is
missing, and if you look closelyin that scene, Yvette actually looks down
the hall, remember, Jeff,we call attention to this, and then
several several seconds go by before MissScarlett arrives. Do we think it could

(15:37):
have been possible there was some tandemwork here between the two, given that
they do have a prior history togetherworking um you know, and let's just
call it a player coach situation forlack of a better term, but they
have they have a history together.Do you think that they conspired to work

(15:58):
together to take out mister body forreal this time and the implant the candlestick
to create confusion if if it's endingnumber one, then yes, only an
ending. It's ending number two.Missus Peacock and her little cohorts do everything,
and miss Scarlett is completely innocent. That's true, And ending in three,

(16:18):
missus Scarlett is responsible for hers iskind of a throwaway. Which one
does she do? True or false? True? Who are you, Perry
Mason? I don't remember which onceshe's responsible for that? You mean seeing
the motorist who she killed? Yeah? And ending three, I can't believe
I forgot. I don't remember commentscomments. They're going crazy right now?

(16:41):
Do you remember later, Jim,who who she kills in the third ending?
All right? If you don't,I don't who kills who in the
third ending? Yeah? But Brad, while you looked this up, I'll
say, since you questioned, howdidd that have the strength to drag him
into the thing? We know froma little a minute in the future that

(17:03):
Scarlett is strong. She helps carrythe cook, so she's got some upper
strength. She could easily have carriedleaving rust the hallway, that's true.
But her dress is so tight there'sno way she's getting that candlestick up on
top of that thing with a verticalleap. Yeah, she needed at least
a step stool, and that thatcould have that could have been one took

(17:26):
her so along. She killed thecop. In the third ending, she
killed a cop. That's it,thank you, she killed the cop.
Um it is I mean again andand like Jim, you know this the
way this movie is set up,I mean it's hard to it's hard to
really follow, you know, thebreadcrumbs to lead to specific people. And
I think it's purposefully ambiguous so thatwe can get into multiple endings and everyone

(17:52):
will be satisfied, I guess goinginto the theater and seeing a different ending.
Um. But at the same time, it's fun they try to figure
this out. Man, it's timeto try to figure out where it goes
now. I also in this minutelove the moment of that we get cut
off right at the end of Wadsworthessentially going through what the purpose the rules

(18:15):
of the game. The rules ofthe game are, which is amazing.
It's it's the kind of scene thatyou would think they put in for the
trailer. M it's not in thetrailer, right. It seems like a
perfect trailers scene that should be likeright before the title comes on. Yeah,
the Clue the movie. Yeah,it would be great with that.
Now. Now, Jim, wereyou at Clue game player? Yeah?

(18:38):
Yeah, I was, but youknow, honestly I didn't. We never
had enough people to really play Cluethe right way, you know. I
always played Clue with another person.Or you really need multiple players because you
know, you have somebody creating themystery, you know, and then you
know you really need extra players toplay. Now, let's merge our two

(19:02):
worlds together. Momentarily, if Cluethe movie or to have featured Chevy Chase,
m which character is Chevy Chase playinginclude the movie? So you gotta
take one actor out and replace himwith Chevy Chevy. Oh god, he

(19:26):
could. Oh he'd just messed up. He'd be a good mister Green because
of the pratfalls and things like that, you know, but he could be
a I mean, he could bea good Plum. He'd be a great
Mustard too. Yeah. I wasgoing back and forth between Mustard and Plumb,

(19:48):
depending on which Chevy you want, because he because if it's like Griswold
Chevy, that's Mustard. Yeah. And if it's Pervy Chevy, yeah maybe
that's Yeah, it's Caddy shag butChevy, it's tie Webb. Then it's
a plumb That's a difficult call.Yeah, I mean that's a good sign

(20:14):
Chevy Chase's skills as an actor thathe could have played a few of them.
Do we rule out We rule outWadsworth altogether. Like Chevy couldn't have
could he could he have gotten?Could he have been Wadsworth? He would
have been a different Wadsworth. Shewould have been a much cooler Wadsworth,
not as frantic Um. But Idon't know. I'm gonna cast him as

(20:36):
Green. I think he could bereally ham up the green stuff Chip.
Yeah, I like him as Green. That's actually a great call. Jeff.
I know you know, yeah,you're you're a big mcke but I
know, let me just tell you, you blew my clue world away when
you came up with the idea thatmister Green is not mister Green. I

(20:57):
never thought that before. If I'vetaken anything from the hours and hours of
listening to this podcast, I can'tstop thinking about that, that that's not
the real mister Green. And Ithink that we've all, as a clue
community come around this theory. AndJeff, you and I came across this
this idea and it and it's evenand subsequently we found clues within the movie

(21:22):
and subsequent movie properties to kind ofconfirm this in some ways correct. Right.
Yeah. When I saw it onstage a few weeks ago in Boston,
they well, they had about sixdifferent endings where everybody was guilty at
some point, and when they gotto Green as the FBI agent, he

(21:44):
plat out said that he was notthe real mister Green. And I stood
up and went, I knew it. All the old people looked at me
and went, oh, it's theguy from the podcast. Yeah, the
podcast guy exactly. Yeah, theyknew it. Cannon. You guys made
that Cannon. I think that's Cannon. You know what. I hate doing

(22:04):
it, but I think I mightowe Jonathan Land another email. We're going
to email now because I did askhim. The first time I did from
for the show. I emailed himabout the blocking in the in the dining
room, which we confirmed, whichhe confirmed and kind of said in his
polite British way, you know, yeah, good job, idiots took it

(22:30):
forty years. So I'm afraid whathe's gonna respond with this time. Well,
I think that the mister I didyour interview five years ago. Would
you just leave me alone? Ma'am? You are now blocked. But I
think that if mister if, Imean, we can get full confirmation on
this not being the real mister Greenbecause to me, Jim, the biggest

(22:52):
thing that stood out to me andit confirmed it was how he outs himself
for lack of a better term,to Wadsworth or to the whole room before
Wadsworth reads the evidence, and thenWadsworth, who has a full page to
go over, completely skips over itand moves right along. Yeah, it's

(23:15):
just to me that was damning. That was very damning. Is that what
he's referring to when he says hewas a plant? You know? Was
he planted into this situation? Yeah? And then that's that's pretty obvious to
that. I mean, I don'tthink it's well, definitely the third it's
it's not him, But I wonderif it's not him, then any any

(23:37):
of him. We just it's justnot important. We don't. We just
don't see that part as the audience. Right. He went home that night
and went, oh, I didn'teven need to be there really, But
that's cool. Okay, Well, are you are you committing to this that
you're gonna put You're gonna email JonathanLand Is this confirmed now? Laker?

(23:59):
Jim though before and if you're gonnaget blocked, this is what you want
to get blocked asking this is thelast one I really really really want to
know. I mean, what elseis there? I mean, there's nothing
else really you could ask him atthis point, Well, we better figure
it out soon because if I canput them all into one, do you
mean that might be better? Itmight be better. And you know,
let me just let me just jumpin right here. It's so amazing that

(24:22):
you guys have this outlet to askhim these questions. That's something we don't
have for Fletch. You know, everybody really associated with Fletch and the creation
of Fletch is no longer with us. Yeah, but we really like the
deleted scenes things like that we haveMichael Richie's not with us. No,
we have nobody that's really could answerthose questions. So it's really amazing that

(24:44):
you guys. It's really incredible thatyou guys have that outlet. Even if
sometimes he says no idea, atleast you have somebody to ask. It's
true because at least he does saythere's no idea, and that's been That
was the nicest surprise about the wholejourney with the documentar this as well,
is that they all could have said, well, usually people say nothing because

(25:06):
there are some documentaries I've tried tostart and they did go anywhere because you
know, crickets. On the otherside, I just had emailed a pretty
big director from the eighties just lastweek and his person got back and said,
no, good luck, but that'sLife of the Burbs and there you

(25:29):
go. Man. Well, hey, Laker Jim, we want you back
next week to talk about minute forty, of course, but before we before
we wrap. You know, youare the proprietor of Laker Jim's Fletch Cast.
You're working on a new season.Can you tease anything. I don't
want you to despoil anything for thepeople, but can you tease anything as
what we can expect for this nextseason. We can tease. It's not

(25:52):
as big a tease as as whenthe streaming of clude documentaries coming out that
I mean, that's biggest teas Maybethat's already been revealed. I don't know,
but I'm a last chief week.Yeah, but yeah, we have
a great upcoming season, sort oflike lots of unsolved mysteries surrounding the Fletched

(26:15):
world. We talked to Chevy Chase, We talked to Dana Wheeler Nicholson,
we talked to Tom Scott, whowas the original composer of the music,
and he's gonna let us hear that, which is the first time anyone's going
to hear that. So we hada lot of exciting things coming up.
Finding the time to edit these episodesis the issue, because it's it's time

(26:36):
consuming. It's ten twelve hours ofediting for me per episode, but it's
worth it because totally. I'll tellyou. That's the way I discovered your
podcast is because while I was inthe middle of finishing the Clue documentary,
I was looking for other movies forthe next one, and as a fan
of Fletch, I went, oh, I wonder if anybody's done or anything
with Fletch, and then I foundyour podcast. Oh, thank got it

(27:02):
well covered. It's all right there. There's nothing I need to add to
this at all. So if youare a fledged fan, you don't you
don't have to wait for anything.Everybody, it's there. And one thing
that. That's pretty cool is they'recoming out with a new Fletch and Fletch
Lives DVD and we that they reachout to us to consult us on the
commentary. So that made us feellike we kind of like we're legit,

(27:26):
are the experts and legitimate, likemade us legit. So that was really
cool to be a part of that. And I think that's coming out soon.
Then that is good. I didnot know that. That is awesome,
man, congrats on that. That'shuge. And honestly, it's because
and I don't even know if eitherone y'all know this, but it's because

(27:47):
of the Laker Jim Fletge cast thatthe Clue documentary got on my radar from
something on social media between the twoof your accounts, and then I cold
emailed Jeff Smith and said come toan interview, and they now look at
this. Over a year later,we're still doing this, this crazy podcast,
and you guys mentioned the Fletch caston that interview we did just found

(28:08):
you got. I mean like Iwas listening, I was a fan.
I was blown away. I couldn'tI couldn't believe to tell the guys that
we just got mentioned on the world. Well, I think that's the first
time I heard. I think Bradsaid it even before we started recording.
Then he started to get on theshow, and then he said it today.
There's the If you like Back tothe Future, you probably like Clue.
And if you like Clue, youprobably like Fletch. And here we

(28:30):
all are at one spot right now. It's like the Holy Trinity coming to
representing the World's what the world ofnineteen eighty five cinemas about to explode?
It is, man, it isall these years later, Laker Jim,
thank you for joining us on thisedition. We can't wait to have you
back next week to talk about minuteforty of this illustrious, illustrious movie.

(28:52):
Uh. And since the announcement hasbeen announced, Jim, remind the people
where they can stream, and whenthey can stream, and how they can
they can stream. It's on screamBox starting August eighth. But I did
see no one told me. Ifound it myself as usual. Uh.
It's available for pre order to own, downloadable on iTunes and Amazon Prime.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
