(00:00):
Oh, Brian, what have youdone? Now? Can you help?
I'm sorry. I didn't mean todisturb the whole household, but my car
broke down out here and I waswondering if I could use your phone just
amount. That's very well, sir, Would you got to come in?
(00:33):
Well? Where is it? Whatthe body? The phone? What body?
But there's nobody, nobody, there'sthere's nobody in the study. Well,
but I think there's a phone inthe lunch Thank you. When you
finished your call, perhaps you'd begood enough to wait here. Hello everybody,
(01:11):
Welcome back to Clue Movie podcast, where we break down the night five
one minute at a time. Weare forty one minute ten and we are
now on the forty second minute tobreak down. My name is Brad Gilmore,
as always, joined by the directorof Who Done It? The Clue
documentary available to stream on screen Boxas well as to purchase on iTunes,
(01:32):
Amazon Prime and the Like. Hisname is Jeff Smith. Yes, I'm
here. It's been available for awhole week depending on when you listen to
this. How do you feel, man? Well, I will pretend that
we are not recording this before it'sreleased, which I'm always fascinated by when
you listen to directors commentaries on somemovies, they record him before the movie
(01:55):
comes out in theaters, and sometimesit's a movie that does not do well,
but they think it's going to dowell, so in the commentary they're
going, oh, this is thisis one of the funniest scenes ever and
it's it could be like the onethat nobody liked or and all the reviews
that got poo pooed on and it'skind of fun. Like I remember getting
the DVD of the Gusts fan santwe make of Psycho, which is durable,
(02:19):
but he did a commentary with Gustsand Vince Vaughan and and hash I
believe, and they were just talkingabout it's about the movies about to come
out and it's what's amazing experiment we'regoing to we're doing and it's going to
be great, and you know itwas not and it did not. So
I feel good to answer your question. I'm so happy with the way the
(02:39):
release has been released of who doneof the Clue documentary on Screenbox, and
I appreciate all the all the wonderfulreviews that it's gotten and all the stars
and the thumbs and even even localmedia attention. Well can we talk about
that? Yeah? Sure, youmade my appearance on the CW thirty nine
(03:00):
Spotlight with Brad Gilmour Houston baby hTown. Yeah, what do you watt
streets in Houston? What do youknow about Houston, Texas? I know
three of my favorite movies involve Houston. Really Rushmore Man too? Oh what
(03:23):
four Superman too? He was pronouncesthat the Planter Houston. They're not really
in Houston, but that's he's fromspace, so they go letter Houston.
Yeah, mistakes that he's from PannHouston. Of course, Paul thirteen.
He used to have a problem whichI'm sure everybody in Houston loves were here.
I never heard that one before.Actually, yeah, that's a new
one. And then Bad News BearsBreaking Training. They play in the old
(03:50):
Astrodome, that's right, which youstill standing? Is it really the help
play there? Who does what doesit? What does it do? Empty?
Which is four swampy? No oneuses its, no one uses it's
just empty shelter, nothing. It'sjust discuss something just something's growing, just
empty. Yeah, Rushmore Rushmore wasfilmed actually at my high school. You
(04:15):
have mentioned that before. Yeah, that is right. I don't know if
you've mentioned that on the air,but I know you've mentioned it. Yeah,
I went to Maraboo b Lamar HighSchool and uh Maraboo or Marabou as
some people say, was the secondpresident of the Republic of Texas before when
we were our own country, beforewe became part of the United States.
(04:36):
Oh, Mark, you're not You'renot still trying to secede, are you.
I think we're good. I thinkwe're good. I think we're around.
I mean we like, we likeit here. Yeah, that's good.
That's good. We've been around likeone hundred and seventy eight years,
so I mean I think we're Ithink we're sticking. Look, jeff is
what I'm excited about. But goahead. I'm sorry they want to jump
(04:58):
into the four man. Now,let's let's drop in and let's start talking
about minute forty two of this movie. Now, in the last edition of
this show, we started talking aboutobviously The Motorist and Jeffrey Kramer, Santa
Claus the movie, other films thatcame out in nineteen eighty five. Of
course, you talked about Back tothe Future, but you actually had a
(05:20):
little bit of a stat for usor some factor regarding research how well this
movie did at the box office andits initial relief Clue. Okay, so
Clue was released on December thirteenth, nineteen eighty five, which at the time
was not a good time for moviesto come out. It was a week
(05:42):
and a half before Christmas. AndI'll just tell you what the top ten
was. I will tell you this, though there was another movie. Two
movies came out the same weekend asClue. Clue and the theatrical version of
the Broadway show A chorus Line andA course Line did much worse. And
I have that written down here.Something it did worse. Oh yeah,
(06:03):
than Clue. Course Line did notmake the top ten. Yes, course
Line hit lucky thirteen and it's openingweekend made two hundred and twenty two thousand,
nine hundred nineteen. It's very no, very bad the top ten that
(06:23):
weekend, though, I will tellyou this will show you what movies from
like in eighty five and the stayingpower of a certain movie that was a
much bigger success for Christopher Lloyd thanclueus coming in at number ten, even
though it was a summer movie.Back to the Future week twenty four twenty
(06:47):
four was number ten the box office. Now I'm gonna grab some my shelf
over here while you talk, Okay, go ahead. Number nine was the
Cannon Films in search of the IndianaJones movies, King Solomon's Minds in its
fourth week. Number eight was aDisney Christmas movie called One Magic Christmas.
(07:10):
Never heard of it? Nope,it's with Mary Stein Virgin Oh well,
I love Mary Stein Burgin. She'sgreat to go back to Back to the
Future. Number seven was Young SherlockHolmes in its second week, produced by
Steven Spielberg, not a big hit. Number six was Clue. It's first
(07:30):
weekend. It made two million, fourteen thousand, one hundred and sixty six
doll hairs. Number five was SantaClaus the movie and its third week with
jeff before mentioned Jeffrey Kramer, alsoJohn Luthgow and Dudley Moore. Number four
was White Knights, which I believeis a dancing movie as well. Well.
(07:51):
Sounds great fourth week number I'm sorry, yeah, that was number four.
Number three was Spies lie Us that'sdirected by John Landis, producer of
Clue, who originally was going todirect Clue but did not direct Clue to
make spies like us. His moviecame out two weeks before Clue and beat
(08:16):
the pants off of Clue at theBow. So Chevy did Fletch and spies
like us in eighty five. Eightyfive is a good damn Number two was
Juel Denial. Yes, that's alsoin its first week. I'm sorry.
There were three movies. Juel Denial, the sequel to Romance in the Stone,
not directed by Robert Zemeckis and notas good and not as good but
(08:39):
fine, sorry, and had awonderful theme song called the Going Gets Tough
by Billy Oshan Billy Oshan, Idon't remember, great song. And then
number one for the third week ina row, Rocky four I Must Break
You. Eighty five is so great, ma'am. Eighty five man have now?
(09:03):
I think of the movies that aren'ton there. Now, I'm going
to Summer. That's summer. Yeah, I want And obviously we're gonna jump
into the minute here just a moment, but I will say Rocky four it's
low on my list of Rocky moviesjust because I think one and three are
(09:24):
perfect. I think two is reallygood. Sometimes I put four over two.
But I think it goes for meRocky three, Rocky, Rocky,
Rocky four, Rocky two, Rockysix, and then Rocky five. Of
course, yeah, Rocky five, well, Rocky three. It depends on
(09:48):
how you like your Rocky. Doyou like your best picture of Rocky then
one and two or the way togo right? So you need your eighties
mixed in with your Rocky, andyou need two villains, mister t and
Thunderlips sorry, clutter lying and Thunderlips. Ye, Paul Cogan not really a
(10:09):
villain because they make up at theend of the match, but wonderful.
And that's because that's where Rocky is. He's losing his way, he's letting
success. I know. Then Nickdies and then Apollo trains the tiger.
Die of the Tiger. Anyway. The last thing I want to say about
the movies from nineteen eighty five, and then we'll jump into clue is Back
(10:30):
to the Future was released on Julythe third, nineteen eighty five. Now,
it was originally slated for July nineteenth, but when they screened it for
test audiences, it had such anovation, such a reaction, such positive
feedback. The studio said, weneed this movie earlier than expected, and
so they released it waite. Look, so they released it on July third
(10:52):
to take advantage of the July fourthweek. And now this is the original
promotional pin release, holding up apin, folks that says on July third,
I'm going back to the future andit has to go back to the
future logo, not the original andyou're about to hold up you Yeah,
you're about to be right now. This is going to be the original release
(11:13):
date. And the original colors, original colors are back to the Future were
like gray and blue. Yeah, and now was holding one since lun July
nineteenth. I'm going back to thefuture. What do you think was the
color change? Reasoning author of Backfrom the Future. You know what,
I am actually not one hundred percentcertain on that, and I would like,
(11:33):
are you going to bed? I'dlike to do this to you,
because you do this to me allthe time. You'll ask the one question
that I don't have any idea too. I guarantee that it was just a
marketing decision. Well, the currentlogo feels more like Superman and Scoonies,
and it's like it's the adventure action. It's yeah, it's more Indiana Jones.
(11:56):
Indian Jones. Yeah, it's veryIndiana are Indiana Jones. So it's
probably just a marketing call, youknow what. I'm actually curious about that
myself, and I'm gonna actually I'mgoing to email someone I know who will
know the answer to that question.Actually, I'm gonna ask him while we're
doing this podcast. But let's talkabout minute forty two. I'll clue the
movie now. It starts off withthe motorist where we left off in the
(12:22):
last one. Now we're about he'sabout to ask if he can use the
phone because his car broke down.As we talked about a minute forty one
the motorist in the original script,we see him swerve out of the way
of a cat and he crashes hiscar therefore needs help at the Hillhouse.
But we have theorized in an earlierversion of this pot episode of this podcast
(12:46):
that maybe the motorist and Colonel Mustardwere in cahoots the whole time through.
After well, we also, I'msorry, mister boy, I'm sorry that's
dropped off. Mister body. Yes, so he could have been circling around
the house and then that cat jumpedout and maybe he didn't intend to come
(13:07):
in because maybe his only job wasto be the driver. And then that
darn cat, That darn cat.But you would think that movie excellent two
movies. It was Richie's the remakeand oh I did not know that.
Yeah, but you would think thatif it was a cat, If it
(13:28):
were me and I were the motoristsand I came to the door, I
don't think i'd be so nonchalant withhey, my car broke down. I
think I'd be like, you willnot believe what just happened. I was
driving around in the rain and thisfreaking curl. Just look, do you
guys have a cat? You missit a cat? Because I almost ran
over him. And I'd like totalk to your manager? Was worth the
(13:52):
phone? Where where's the phone?I actually will tell you this, And
I didn't plan I'm going into this, but I was in Las Vegas about
a week ago at the time ofthis recording, or a few days ago
at the time of the recording, and I was going through the casino and
(14:15):
in my head, I said, you know what, if they ever remake
Clue, instead of putting it allin a house, it should be in
like a hotel casino type atmosphere inVegas and all of their blackmail quote unquote,
it's just gambling dead right, that'sthe baggage that they bring to the
(14:35):
table to get them in the casino, literally, and that's that a downtown
like city, like old casino.Yeah, I'm thinking like the Sahara in
the seventies, or like the Plaza, like the Plaza, yeah, or
the International you know where where Elvisplayed, And we can even have a
(15:00):
whole Elvis subplot in there early seventies. It's Elvis. Can you imagine?
That's actually great? And then theyshoot Elvis. Yeah, it's like Tarantino.
It's rewriting it, rewrite the history. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
In the original script, in theoriginal draft of the script that we
(15:24):
have provided to us, this iswhere it says we are in the script,
and so we'll read this for thepeople. The motorists, Oh,
here we go. Led by Wadsworth, they all rushed to the front door.
Wadsworth throws the door open, pullsback his arm rapidly preparing to throw
the key into the night, andrealizes that he is standing face to face
(15:46):
with the motorist. The motorist thinksWadsworth is about to punch him, and
he half ducks and put his handsto defend himself and to stave off the
attack Wadsworth's throwing arm. Wadsworth,Oh, sorry, sorry, can we
help? From the motorist point ofview, we see eight people are packed
(16:08):
into the front door, staring athim with various expressions of fear, suspicion,
and hysteria. Motorist, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disturb the
whole household, but my car brokedown out there, and I was wondering
if I could use your phone.Wadsworth, just a moment, please,
All eight people turn into each otherand hastily have a whispered conference. Love
(16:30):
that line, A hasty whispered conference. I gotta write that down. We
again see them from the motorist pov. Occasional words float out of the huddle.
He wants to use the phone.I say, no, what's he
doing round here? Love that linetoo? How can we say? No?
All right? Yes, yes, agreed. Wadsworth turns and tries to
(16:52):
look as dignified and normal as possibleand says, very well, sir,
would you like to come in themotorist cracking a joe. Unless you've got
a phone out here, yes, nobody laughs. The motorist steps in.
All eight people just stare at him. Motorist, well, where is it?
Wadsworth? What the body? Heinadvertently let the questions slip out.
(17:15):
The others react. The motors thephone a beat? What body? Wadsworth?
Nobody, nobody, there's nobody inthe study. He points to the
study door. The motorist starts walkingtowards it. Simultaneously, everyone realizes that
there are bodies in there. AllNo Wadsworth, no, no, that's
been disconnected. But I think there'sone in the lounge. Motorists, thank
(17:37):
you, walk this way. Hesets off, doing his usual dignified butler
walk. The motorist releases are realizings, excuse me that all eyes are on
him, follows Wadsworth in an exactimitation of wadsworth idiosyncratic walk. And then
they go into the lounge. Onceyou made your call, will you wait
(17:59):
here? He says, certainly, and Wadsworth retreats the door, opens it
and goes out. So I meanpretty much pretty much to say, couple
things I'd like to got rid ofthat silly little joke about unless you got
a phone out here, I mean, unless you got a phone out here
out of the rain, in therain, I don't want to be of
the rain. Hello, in therain. I wonder if they filled that
(18:22):
too interesting it would be a thatNo I didn't. You didn't, by
the way, from what I've heard, no particular reason for it, just
an internal decision. More importantly, though, you can see a slight change
in the logo itself. Look atthe top of the a. Oh,
(18:44):
yes, there is a change inthe actual logo itself, or going back
to the future logo every Yes,sorry, I just wanted to read that
out. That's from my inside sourcewhose name cannot be revealed. Yeah,
exactly, sounds just like that.Actually, so well, we'll talk after
this. Look at the logo.So now, the other thing that stuck
(19:07):
out to me about the motorist inthis particular scene, when he's talking on
the doorstep as it's raining down, that's obvious eighty R right, Yeah,
yeah, for sure, because I'msure they've they've got the rain coming down.
There was on the sound stage still, the whole front porch is still
on. That's on the stage,I'm sure. So Yeah, his his
(19:33):
crystal clear dialogue is it is good. No, it's great. I'm glad
the script said the script said whatthey were whispering, because I was trying
to really listen to what that mustbe fun to do as an actor to
record the what was the huddled calledthe hasty whispered conference conference. Yeah,
I want to write hastily, hastywhispered conference, whispered conference into every script.
(20:00):
It's one of the great It's actuallyone of the great things I've ever
read in any script. A tastybecause you know exactly what they mean.
Even if you've never seen the movie, you know exactly what that is.
You know how to play that asan actor. Oh, it's like one
of those things. Yeah. Sothis is Jeffrey Kramer. He comes in
at the last minute. He wascast because he had done Halloween two,
(20:25):
which was produced by Debra Hill, and so he was friends with Debor Hill.
And then when Cluke came up,he had the opportunity to audition and
he got it and I was ableto interview him. He's super nice for
the who done of the Clue documentary, and he's just super grateful that he
was in this movie with this cast, and he was the one that Laker
(20:49):
Jim got the autograph from. Ata convention he had Laker Jim had Jeffrey
Cramber signed his clue poster, andJeffrey Kramer said, do you know we
made a documentary? Right? Iwould have loved if habid me if I
had k beside this. Then hesaid, did you know we made a
documentary? Did you? Did you? Did you? I heard the thing
(21:12):
about Jeffrey Kramer. I've fallen intothis pattern recently where I like to look
up like did they have a goodrun regarding their their acting career? So
we had Jaws, as we know, I mean, that's pretty good.
That's gonna be pretty high on anybody'slead. Now. In Jaws, he's
(21:33):
Deputy Lenny Hendricks is how he's credited. He's also goes under the name Jeffrey
C. Kramer. That's nineteen seventyfive. If we fast forward to Jaws
two, nineteen seventy eight, he'scredited as Deputy Jeff Hendricks from Oh we
got his own real name? Hewent from Lenny to Jeff, same last
(21:55):
name, same title of deputy, but a different first name. Interesting from
there, as far as Big namestuff. I mean, he was in
Mash Laverne and Shirley, big televisionshows at the time. He was in
Halloween two, as you just talkedabout. He was in an episode of
The Incredible Hulk TV show so good. He was in Happy Days as a
(22:22):
series regular. Then Santa Claus themovie in eighty five, Clue the movie
in eighty five. He was avoice over actor in the Burbs in eighty
nine. Didn't do much after that. He's producing now. He's doing a
lot of production. Yeah, that'swhat they had him on here, a
lot of producing, including Ally McBeal. That's pretty good. The practice,
(22:48):
big show. For the interview forthe documentary, it was on I forget
which lot now. It was thathe had an office on one of the
lots. That was fun. Ifyou have an office on the lot,
you have an office some lot, you're going somewhere. He's already No,
he's already there. Well, heis already there now. As far as
(23:08):
him being in the lounge on thephone, yeah, I want to talk
about that anyway. This is Ithink this is when the movie kind of
starts to get scary, because youhear the score come in right there and
it's a very disturbing score. There'sa tone change, there's a super tone
change. So what are we thinkinghere, Well, we don't. I
(23:32):
don't think we're suspicious of him.We don't think he's there on purpose.
We think this poor guy is toastand we find out later he's he has
a well he has toast by theway, everybody. But we just know
it's just a matter of time.Something bad's going to happen. And the
music, definitely, the music hasbeen fun. It's still it's still it's
(23:53):
not like wacky music, but it'sit's got the fun nature to it.
And now it's just spooky, scarymurder music by John Morris. And you
know something bad is going to happen. And then when what was what locks
of the door? You see theknob kind of twitch and Jeffrey Kramer is
selling that he's scared of thinking whydid I come to this house? Now
(24:18):
I understand that it's in the script. That's the reason he walks in the
door. Let's look at this inreal life. I love it. We
do that, yeah, because oneone this would never happen today ever,
right, it would be a veryrare occurrence if somebody goes up to a
stranger's house and asks to use thephone. However, let's operate under that
(24:41):
assumption. To rain rainy day, your car broke down, You've probably walked
to the nearest home that you couldfind due to the volume of the precipitation
falling upon you, and you knockon the door, probably expecting at least
a single person to answer, butyou're greeted by eight Yeah, do you
(25:03):
not get weirded? Out the gates? He had to get bad of the
gates, and apparently he finagled hisway through the gate. It was no
problem. Yeah, and a longwalk all the way up. Quite the
walk. But we don't know whatother houses are around. But we have
to assume from the wide shot thatwe see of the hill house that I
did not see any neighbors. Idid not see any neighboring homes or homesteads
(25:26):
or properties of any kind. Sothis could be a very remote place.
And where do we where do wethink? This is probably somewhere in Massachusetts,
Oh, England area, Yeah,I think not New Hampshire, Maine,
Vermont. Think who the hill knows? This is where you're supposed to
(25:48):
be? Should I've spent two yearshere, but he's But obviously it's a
stately resident, so it's going tohave quite a cornucopy of property available to
it in the surrounding area. AndI do not feel as though that there
was any property adjacent or close bythe hillhouse. So he makes the long
(26:08):
pilgrimage up, and then when he'sgreeted by these eight people, I would
be out immediately. I would beout immediately if you say you know,
because first of all, I don'twant to impose anyway. And then if
I see, like he said,I don't want to disturb the whole household,
that would put me off. Thenthe hastily whispered conference would probably be
if I was already so so onit. Once that occurs, I'm all
(26:30):
the way out. I'm all theway out. I'm gone. I would
assume they're whispering, how can wekill this guy and eat him with our
monkey brains? But I see,I don't know, because for me,
I'd be so embarrassed that I madethe whole trek. How do you get
out of that situation? How doyou say? You know what? Guys?
(26:51):
My car did not break down.I will go to the neighbor that
does not exist, thanks though youall creep me out. No, he's
and he stuck. It's all theway he's there, and I mean that's
why he's what he gets. Hewalks in and he's stared them down.
He's like, this is bad.And then when he lock him in,
(27:15):
he's he knows well, we knowthat his fate is going to be played
out in the another edition of thisshow. It will get to and we
do not know what is who isabout to call assuming we know he's going
to call for help, but wedon't know who he's calling, and we
don't know what their conversation will entail, and we're going to find that out
(27:36):
soon. Is there anything else inthis minute that you really want to make
mention of. Let's see. Wetalked about Jeffrey Kramer. We talked about
that it's scary. We talked aboutwho done at the Clue documentary streaming on
screen box about your book, dida little bit out Back to the Future
logos, We did the top tenmovies of eighty five. This is a
(28:00):
good, very informative and I thinkthis is a good place to put a
ribbon on it. Did she geta review. Does she get a review
from somebody listening right now? We'regonna put a bow on this one.
We're gonna come back with forty threenext week where we can really dive deeper
into what happens to Jeffrey Kramer andwhat the other eight characters, the eight
living characters right now? So Jeffery, So Jeffrey Kramer, I guess is
(28:25):
the eleventh person we've been introduced toin this movie? Is that correct?
Eights? The cook? Do thesix game piece characters? You have Wadsworth
a vet that's eight, body,Cook that's ten. Yeah, Motorists is
eleven, Lucky eleven. So we'llsee what happens to go to eleven.
(28:45):
These go to eleven. Then we'regoing to find out what's going to happen
next week right here on Clue theMovie Podcast makes you stream the new documentary
