Speaker 1 (00:01):
We're broadcasting from the Fox Sports Radio studio in Paul Springs.
It's time for the show that brings you everything local,
a local powerhouse, everything Coachella Valley, one of the most
beautiful places in the country. This is Coachella Valley Sports
Reports with your host Coach B. Bringing you the score, stories,
(00:22):
and spotlight moments from the teams and athletes that make
this valley proud.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Proudly covering these young men.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
And women, all local, all the time, covering the valley.
Now Coach B.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Coach B is the man.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Let's get started.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach B on Fox Sports Radio. Heard is Southern California
on Fox Sports twelve seventy eight M and I'm heard
in Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine.
FM is always with streaming twenty four to seven on
the iHeart Radio app. We have a jam pack show.
(00:58):
And if I told you this show was super jam packed,
I would not be doing it justice. Uh. Today we
have the number one ranked girls volleyball team and all
the Coachella Valley. We have the Xavier Prep in studio
and their their boys football team had a pretty big
(01:19):
game last night, really the Battle of Cook Street. So
Xavier Prep Girls volleyball is in the building, Coach Bailey
is here, and then we have the young men. We
have Banning Football in the building. Coach Nisso. I've known
coach Nisso for some time. He graduated from Edwanda, So
(01:41):
I know coach Nisso. I've seen his journey as he's
progressed now he's out here in Banning. And then we
have a great interview from Yusef. He was from Desert
Christian Academy. He was the MVP of the inaugural Coachella
Valley Basketball All Star Classic. So, as I said, we
(02:02):
have a jam packed show today. But what I wanted
to make sure that we do is I want to
make sure that we give you some information about your
top ten out here for volleyball, since we have the
young ladies in the house, and that is none other
(02:23):
than Xavier Prep, the number one ranked team in all
of the Coachella Valley. So if you go to the Instagram,
make sure you go to Fox Sports PS go to
the Instagram, and I'll tell you the very first pole
that we did. If I said it blew up, I
(02:44):
would not be doing it justice because that first pole
that we did for the Coachella Valley Girls Volleyball this
is I mean, when you look at the poles that
we produce, that first pole that we produce on Instagram,
I am pretty excited about this. When you look at
the traction, you look at the views. Last time I checked,
(03:05):
it was over eighteen thousand views. So congratulations to the
young ladies. I'll tell you that. Lets you know there
is a huge appetite tight out here in the CV
for the volleyball And I'll let everyone know because everyone's
asking now when you put these things out, people want
(03:26):
to know whether they're going to be able to see
a new one. The new one will post on Monday,
So the new Girl's Volleyball poll will post on Monday.
We wanted to make sure some things shook out first,
like there was a big game Xavier Prep as they
defeat it. Xavier Prep defeated Palm Desert and Xavier Prep
(03:47):
was ranked number one, Palm Desert was ranked number two.
First of all, let me make sure I do this
because coach Walker from Xavier Prep called in last week
the Coachella Valley All Star Volleyball class. It's coming up,
and that's going to be November fifteenth. We're looking to
tip that game off at two o'clock location. We're still
(04:08):
looking to confirm the location. We will have that location shortly,
but every young lady that participates in that game will
get a free jersey that they will be able to
keep for a lifetime. If again, if you go on
to the Instagram, that's Fox Sports. Ps. Go to the
Instagram and I think we put the jersey up there.
(04:31):
The design if you're familiar with the Coachella Valley Basketball
All Star Classic the Baseball All Star Classic, it's pretty
much the same theme. On the front of the jersey,
you have the logo of the Coachella Valley All Star Classic,
very similar to the Coachella Valley Sports Report. Ah, that's
called marketing, folks. You want to tie everything in because
(04:54):
we are fairly new to the market. We took over
twelve to seven AM in January and our goal was
to get involved with the community. The first layer was
the All Star Games because we wanted to get involved
with the young people. If you don't know about me,
I was on Fox Sports thirteen AM thirteen fifty for
the past ten years and then I transitioned out here
(05:14):
to the Coachella Valley in Palm Springs to launch twelve
seventy a m. And we did the Riverside County Game,
the San Bernardino County Game, and we did the Empire Game.
We did those for about ten years. They were very
successful in the community, a great way to give back
to the kids. We never ever ever charge a student
(05:36):
athlete to participate in the game. Now, the parents, you
do have to pay to get in there, Like we
always say if you go to one of your kids
high school athletic events, you do have to pay to
get in. We use those funds to help take care
of the game and put the game on so that
there's no charge to the student athletes to pay to
pay to play, and then we give away a partial
(05:56):
college scholarship to the MVP of the game. So I
say that to say we're excited that the Palm Desert
coach Coach Walker will coach one of the teams, and
then Coach Bailey from Xavier Prep will coach another team.
Now I went off on the soapbox. I've told you
all before you got a real me in. You gotta
say Coach b Let's stay on task. I was giving
(06:19):
you the top ten in volleyball. So the last pole
we did, like I said, the new pole will drop Monday,
So number ten and that this is the Coachella Valley
Volleyball rankings. Number ten was Rancho Mirage. Number nine was
Shadow Hills, Number eight was Banning, Number seven was Desert Christian.
Number six was Yaka. Number five was in the Yeo.
Number four is Coachella Valley. Number four, number three Palm Springs,
(06:42):
number two, Palm Desert, and then number one. And I'll
tell you know, if I was a Gambley person, I
would say there's a good chance that Xavier Prep will
hold on to that number one spot with the week
that they had taking on their league rival Palm Desert
and getting that victory. Now they have to play them again.
So we're still up in the air, still up in grabs,
(07:04):
and we'll see how that goes. But that that pole
will drop on Monday, and then we'll go ahead and
give you a look at the Coachella Valley Football poll.
Bannings in the house, Bannings number seven in their pole.
So it's good to see them in here, good to
talk to them. Oh one thing I was going to say,
I know, I go off of my soalboxing, my tangents,
(07:26):
but in volleyball I had people coming for me. I'll
say this, the polls are a living, breathing work in progress.
So it's based off the rankings, it's based off the
teams that are played, and all those factors go in. Well,
we do those poles and we put everyone in there.
So now once again, this is Fox Sports twelve seventy M,
(07:49):
Fox Sports twelve seventy AM, the Coachella Valley Sports Report.
I am your host, Coach B and now the football
pole coming in at number ten. You had Coachella Valley
coming at number nine. You had Yukava coming in number eight.
You had Desert Christian coming in at number seven. You
have Banning coming in number six. You have Rancho Mirage
number five, year Shadowhills number four, Xavier Prep. And after
(08:11):
their big week, you know there's gonna be some movement
because Xavier Prep just took down Palm Desert again. The
new pole will drop money, So don't come for me.
There's no need to come for me. The new pole
will drop Monday and we'll get that out. Palm Desert
was ranked number three. At the time of this pole
coming out coming number two was Lakita and it coming
(08:32):
in number one. And I'll tell you when Palm Springs
became number one in our pole, people they came for me.
They said, oh, I don't know about that. Palm Springs
six and Donut six and zero six and zero, however
you want to slice it. They are undefeated and you've
(08:54):
got to put some respect on what Palm Springs is doing.
I'll tell you right now, they're balling because Palm Springs
last night they won a game of thirty two to
thirteen over Lakina, and Lakina was ranked number two in
the poll. So are you still are you still questioning
what Palm Springs can do? Like I said, there's going
(09:16):
to be some movements. So number two Lakina feil the
Palm Springs. Number three, Palm Desert fell to Xavier nineteen
to fourteen. Shadow Hills beat Rancho Mirage eighteen to fourteen.
Yuka Valley beat Banning sixty two to forty two. And
I'll tell you right now, I want to tip my
cap to coach Nisso still came in, Still brought these
(09:40):
young men, made sure they showed up. So I appreciate
that so much because sometimes we schedule these interviews weeks
in advance and you don't know how the season's going
to shake out. But I appreciate Coach Nisso coming in
and making sure these young men were able to honor them.
And that's what this is. That's what we're trying to do.
We're trying to honor these young men. Desert Christian won
forty six to zero NewView Bridge, and then Yucca Valley
(10:02):
beat Desert Hot Springs twenty eight to seven. So those
are just some of the few, just some of the
scores that we have here. We're gonna take a quick
commercial break, and when we come back, we're gonna have
the young ladies of Xavier Prep Volleyball. And I appreciate
coach Bailey coming in because I know she does a
lot of the activities on her school campus and this morning,
(10:25):
I think she was working on the homecoming So just
tip my cap to her. Imagine all the things that
she's got going on. But when we come back here
on Fox Sports Radio, we will have Xavier Prep girls
of volleyball in the building. So let's go ahead and
take a quick commercial break. This is the Coachella Valley
(10:48):
Sports Report. I am your host, Coach B on Fox
Sports Radio. Heard in Southern California on Fox Sports twelve
seventy am. And I am heard in Las Vegas. Oh
excuse me, that was I feel like a teenager right there.
And I am heard in Las Vegas on Fox Sports
ninety eight point nine FM. And as always, we are
streaming twenty four to seven on the I Heart Radio app.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report on Fox Sports Radio.
Can't get enough of the Coachella Valley Sports Report, then
make sure you follow us. We're on X and Instagram
at CBSR Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach BE on Fox Sports Radio. Heard in Southern California
on Fox Sports twelve seveny am. And I'm also heard
in Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine FM.
And We're streaming twenty four seven on the I Heart
Radio app. And I'm pretty excited right now we have
the number one girls volleyball team in all the Coachella Valley.
(11:49):
You guys just had a big win. But coach, please
do me a favorite. Introduce yourself to the Fox Sports
Radio audience.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Hello, I am coach Bailey Bailey Dashner, and I'm here
with Fox Sports Palm Springs today.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yes, and we thank you so much for coming in.
Tell me a little bit that big game that you
just had no bulletin board material. I always say that
because we want to make sure. I don't want to.
I don't want someone say, hey, we heard you on
the show saying this. But tell me a little bit
about that, because I know that was a big contest
league play for you all to get that. You were
ranked number one in the in our poll in Palm
(12:23):
Desert number two.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Yeah, I definitely was a big game. There was a
lot of pressure leading up to it and a lot
of tension, but I think overall, we really just focused
on what we needed to do on our side, and
I think energy and confidence and just like being fierce
was our biggest focus. And also like we thrive when
we play disciplined volleyball, so I think our biggest thing
(12:45):
is making sure we're practicing what we're preaching, so then
we fall back on those what we train, you know,
when we're in stressful situations or long sets, And I
think we totally prepped ourselves well, and we were ready
to go when it came to game time.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
And one thing, Coach I joke about because when you
first came in, I wish I could have seen my
face because I thought you were a player at first
and I had to realize, no, that's coach, yeh. But
I know you were a great player. You play college ball.
So tell me a little bit what was that transition
like for you. We talk up a little bit about
this off air. Great players don't always make the best coaches.
They always talk about Jordan and Larry Bird, they didn't
(13:19):
make the best coaches because you think everyone should be
able to be as good as me. But you have
a god given talent. But what is that like when
you have to manage a team and now get everyone
get more out of everyone.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah, I think it's definitely been a perspective change. But
I think it's made me really love and appreciate the
sport overall just so much more. And like I was
kind of telling you before we went on air, it works.
Volleyball is like a machine and you need all parts
working and doing their job in order for us to thrive.
And I think I've just like really been able to
(13:52):
see how much contribution that each role has and how
important that is and how teamwork really applies. And I
think just as a player, it was easier, you know,
to do your own job, and now it's like, how
do I make sure we're all on the same focus
twenty four to seven and that we're playing as a unit,
you know, right right?
Speaker 2 (14:11):
And you know when I look at your team, great,
great commaderie, you could see they really like each other.
What is the energy like on your team? But that's
got to be like refreshing because they genuinely look like
they enjoy being around each other.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Yeah, the energy is insane, It's amazing. I feel like
at practice it's great, we practice what we preach, and
so I just feel like they're constantly upping up competitiveness,
Like it's it's fun at practice, it's competitive, it's fierce,
and it makes it really easy to carry that into
the game because we're constantly practicing that and they just
(14:45):
genuinely love the game. I love the game. So I
just feel like it's just this big group of people
that just love volleyball, and it just makes the environment
super exciting and fun every single day.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
And the support you get from the administration you have
President Campbell. I mean that's a great thing that have
the support. I mean Xavier Prep. When we said we
were going to do the games for football on radio,
they were all in, what is that like to have
because there's some schools that don't really get behind athletics.
I mean, you are a school that focus on academics
and athletics. I mean that's a beautiful thing. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
No, the support there is amazing. Especially I am young,
as you were saying, I look like the girls, so
you know, I'm trying every single day to be the
best coach that I can be. And I think they
are very open with like me having questions and giving
me feedback, and they're very much like here for the
whole program and the whole school itself and whatever they
(15:39):
can do to help everyone thrive is just kind of
the mindset at Xavier. And I feel super supported, like
I can ask and reach out for anything if I needed,
and super blessed with that for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
And you said you made a great point because there
are some schools that may be bought in with maybe
the football team the basketball team, but it's equal a
representation and that's a really, really great thing to have that.
But I'll ask you this, was there a point because
you guys are dominant right now, you guys are playing
some really really good volleyball. Was there a point in
(16:11):
practice or preseason are when you were getting ready for
the season you said this could be a special team
and you are, like you said, you're not senior heavy.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Yeah, yeah, we definitely have a young team, which is
so exciting. But I definitely think honestly, from probably the
first week, I was kind of like, oh my gosh,
like this team is just really special. And I really
think it's so special because we have such good leaders
and it's not just like there's one or two people.
I feel like it's a lot of girls feeling like
(16:41):
they can feel comfortable to speak up, and we try
to create that environment where I try to make it like,
let's all share our opinions, what are we feeling right now,
and that way, you know, those younger girls like can
start practicing that leadership role and by the time they're
juniors and seniors, they're ready to lead.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
So yeah, that's a great job. And you have some
young ladies with you, we're gonna we're gonna bring them
in who did you bring in with you today, coach.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
I've got Grace Thompson, a senior. I've got Lila Barquette,
a senior, Brent Campbell a junior, ariana Padilla junior, and
Annabel Frederick a junior.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Excellent. So we'll bring the first young lady up and
by all means, introduce yourself to Yes, make the adjustments
as the are. You could just swing it up if
you need to, whichever is easiest. There you go, and
you can just hold it back. Go ahead and introduce
yourself to the Fox Sports Radio audience. My name is
Oh let's go ahead. So I'm sorry I didn't have
your microphone on. Bad radio hosts do that one morn
(17:37):
time for me. Sorry by that.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
My name is Grace Thompson. I'm a senior and I
played volleyball for zaber Putt and.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
I have Okay, I just had to make sure that
I got your questionnaire. So let's see what So this
is what I love to do because I love to
go beyond just the sport. Now, you have not committed yet.
Do you have a dream college or anywhere that you
would like to go.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
I don't have a dream college necessarily at the moment
right now, it's very busy with the college application process,
but I'm just gonna apply to a lot of different
schools see where I get in, and just see where
I think the best fit for me as a person
will be.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
And I tell you that's one of the beauties of
going to Xavier Prep. You have choices. You have because
there's a rigorous academic so you can go in on
an academic scholarship. I'm sure are an athletic scholarship. So,
but this is your senior year, the final ride, right?
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (18:27):
How fast did that go for you?
Speaker 4 (18:28):
Oh? My gosh, so fast? What's already basically our first
quarter done of my senior year. We have senior night
coming up. I honestly just can't believe it. I think
I've changed so much since I was a freshman, but
it really doesn't feel that long ago. But I'm just
so grateful to have had such an awesome high school experience,
and I'm really excited for what the rest of senior
year is gonna Hold.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Here's the most important thing. It's tonight's homecoming, right, Yes?
Are you going to homecoming?
Speaker 4 (18:51):
I am?
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Okay, So let's know, how excited are you about homecoming.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
I'm so excited. Yesterday was so fun at the homecoming game,
and I'm so excited for tonight.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Yes, yes, And then you said you played club with
some of the Palm Desert girls as well, right, and
do or.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
I haven't really played too much club, but I played
for about a month last season.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Yes, So that's got to be interesting because because the
valley is so small and what knows everyone?
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Yes, for sure?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Absolutely, all right, excellent, Well, thank you so much for
coming in. We wanted to thank you congratulations on your
senior year, and then we'll bring in, bring in your teammates,
so we'll bring the next young lady up.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Thank you. So I tell you that your students are
just a next level, so polite, so kind. I love
that you're the first person to say that on air,
So thank you. So go ahead and introduce yourself to
the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
Hello, my name is Lila Barquette and I'm a senior
at Xavier College Prep.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
So you're a senior as well.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
Went fast, right, Yeah, it went by so fast.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
So what's been the difference when the first day you
stepped on Xavier till now?
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Oh, my goodness. I mean, there's definitely been a lot
of changes, especially in volleyball, Like last season we lost
all of our seniors and we were very senior dominant.
But I feel like there has been no significant change
from like freshman year to senior year, just because Xavier
volleyball has remained so consistent and it's just been great
(20:12):
to be a part of the team.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
So let me ask you that. So you said last year,
you guys lost a lot of seniors. Was that something
scary for you to think that now I have to
fill in and I have to do this.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
Yeah, it was definitely a big change, and I wasn't
really sure how it was going to go losing I
mean a majority of our starting lineup. But I mean
after the first tournament that we had, I realized this
truly is a special team and it is going to
be a fun journey.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Right. And you said your sister inspired you to play.
Did she go to Xavier?
Speaker 5 (20:39):
Yes she did.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Was she one of the seniors or no?
Speaker 5 (20:42):
No, she graduated in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Okay, so that was so long ago? Yeah, wow ago?
So what are your goals for the season? It would
would I know you guys want to get league. But
do you have any other goals, the personal goals for
yourself that you wanted to accomplish.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
Nothing personal. I'm really just focused on my team and
doing what we can do to better everyone. But I
think definitely a main goal is making it far in
CIF because last, you know, last season, we've been able
to do well in league, but we really want to
transfer that into CIF this season.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Excellent, Okay, how excited are you about homecoming?
Speaker 5 (21:16):
I am really excited as well.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Excellent, excellent, Well, congratulations, young lady, have a wonderful homecoming tonight.
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. We'll bring
our next young lady up and please introduce yourself to
the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
Hi, my name is Brinn Campbell and I'm a junior
at Savor College.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
Path So you are one of the underclassmen. So, so
how excited do you because you were you on the
team last year? I was so were you nervous when
you when you had because the leaders were the seniors
and I'm sure they gave you guys a lot of leadership.
Were you worried about stepping into the role of being
a leader this year?
Speaker 6 (21:52):
Honestly, I wasn't not worried. You know, I had some
experience in the past with my club teams and the
years prior to the year, and then I also had
my sister as a senior last year, so she also
really helped me find that leadership role.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
So are you the youngest, No, I'm a middle child.
Speaker 6 (22:10):
I have a younger brother who's a freshman savior.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Okay, excellent. So you guys all went to Xavier. So
tell me, was there a time in this season when
you thought to yourself, you know, those seniors were important
last year, but you know we're going to be a
special bunch this year. Was there a moment for you?
Speaker 6 (22:28):
I definitely saw that at the beginning of the year
in summer volleyball, because we definitely have three very leadership
like leaders as seniors this year. And I was really
confident with this team because these seniors just really showed
the underclassmen how to come into the varsity team with
(22:50):
confidence and leadership.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
So the two things you took your sister spot when
she graduated, and you've been playing varsity since you were
a friend I have, so you you really experienced. Do
you think that's something that that experience has helped you
carry this year where you could step in and maybe
your leader role and you could help motivate the the
the underclassmen for sure.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
You know, I had two years of seniors to look
up to in my volleyball career. So this year I'm
really going to focus on taking some skills from them
and really like learning how to step into those leadership shoes.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
And that's wonderful. And you said you're you're a junior,
your your brother is a freshman. Yes, so my daughter
was the same way. So when you see your little
brother on campus, just be nice to them, just say
because my my daughter will walk the other way. But
thank you so much, young lady for coming in. Congratulations
on the season. And then we'll bring in your your
next teammate, So please introduce it. Yes, if you need
(23:50):
to adjust it, there you go. So please introduce yourself
to the Fox SFORS radio audience.
Speaker 8 (23:58):
Hello everyone, my name is Oriana. I am a junior
and I go to Xavier College prep excellently.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
And you said like you're the energetic one. Uh yeah,
I would consider myself that you're the what great are
you in? I'm a junior, you're a junior. Okay, so
are you so your sister you said your sister and
your mom inspired you.
Speaker 8 (24:16):
Yes, my sister. I played with her last year on
the team, and she really helped me like find out
like where I stand as a player, and like we
definitely had those talks where it's like next year, I'm
not gonna be here, so you need to be ready
to step up and stuff. And I also just feel
like our seniors last year played like an important role
on the team, right and they definitely just like help me,
(24:38):
like again, like find myself and like who I am
and like what I'm supposed.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
To do right now. Now, my age starts with the five,
so I'm a little bit older. You say you're a
lib Oh yes, okay. My generation says, like, my daughter's
twenty five and she'll text me something sometimes like and
she gets mad. So if your parents do this, if
you text your and they call you back, do you
get upset?
Speaker 6 (25:02):
No?
Speaker 8 (25:02):
I love my mom, dear, Okay, I love my okay.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Okay, yeah, yeah right, because my daughter she gets mad.
She'll text me and then she said Dad's calling, Like yes,
because I don't understand what you just like, I don't
I don't understand that. So it's guilty confession. I go
to chat GPT sometimes what my daughter is saying so
because I don't get it. But tell me a little
bit about that. You have two older sisters and they
(25:25):
helped you with the game as well. You said your
sister was a senior last year.
Speaker 8 (25:28):
Yes, so I have two older sisters. My older sister
goes to u C I and the middle child, which
was the senior last year, she goes to UCSB, so
Santa Barbara. But yeah, so she just helped me like
find who I am.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
And I'm genuinely.
Speaker 8 (25:41):
Grateful for them and all the seniors that helped me
like decide like what.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
I'm supposed to do on the team.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
And you're the baby.
Speaker 8 (25:46):
Oh yes, I'm the youngest.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
So is I? So is I? I love it? I
love it? So do you do? I'll ask you this,
do you ever do like me? I usually look at
all the dumb stuff my brother did and I say,
I don't. I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna do that.
So yeah, okay, so was it just me?
Speaker 6 (25:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (26:00):
Okay, excellent. Well, congratulations on your season. We look forward
to continue to watching you. I think we have two
more young ladies? Are one more? Okay, we'll bring one
more young lady. Come on up and introduce yourself to
the Fox and I'll tell you, coach, these are some
nice polos. I really like the polos that you all have. Yeah, Oh,
the game days nice nice? I love it. Go ahead
and introduce yourself to the Foxworts radio audience.
Speaker 9 (26:22):
I'm annabel Frederick. I'm a junior and I go to Xavier.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Okay, so you you guys really are underclassmen heavy, so Annabelle,
so tell me what is it about volleyball that Annabelle correct? Okay,
because the way you looked at me, I was I
want to make sure I'm known for mispronouncing my own days.
I want to make sure I got that right. But
what was it about volleyball that got you excited and
wanted you to be a part of this?
Speaker 9 (26:45):
I started volleyball when I was about nine years old,
and I started a club, and I was homeschooled for
a long time, and I realized like how much I
loved volleyball, and so I wanted to like continue in
high school. And so I found Xavier, and I just
I had news I had known some girls on the
team before, like Juju and Jillie, some of the seniors
from last year, and they really like inspired me to
(27:06):
want to go to Xavier and continue my volleyball career there.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
Okay, and you said, so you came into this year
as a junior and you were the starting setter and
you guys last year, what it was it last year?
This year twenty six and five, and you want an
MVP at a tournament.
Speaker 9 (27:20):
Yes, it was. I was scared up first to start
this year as a setter, especially like last year, I
didn't really start my position. I started as the right side,
and so I was excited to step up, but nervous.
And then in my first tournament, we really got into
our rhythm as a team and I just felt like
so united with everybody on the court, and it was
just yeah, it helped me realize that I'm gonna be okay.
(27:43):
Like everybody all on the team has got my back,
and that's the great thing about our team, as we
were all there for each other and so I.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Just feel very supportive, excellent. And then one thing I
always asked, I love the ass this of setters. Uh,
when you see that ball coming up and you know
you're about to set up a teammate and they're just
about the spike and on someone's head. Can I say that?
Can I say? You know and you know that this
is this is this is the kill shot, this is it.
We're done, we're getting out of here, we're getting our
bags and we're gone. Do you ever laugh at yourself
(28:10):
and say it's game time? I mean, yeah, I love it.
I love it. I love I always like to ask
the centers that is that something that brings you joy
when you know that you set up a teammate because
it's it's it's one of those things. Without you setting
it properly and getting it there, it's not gonna happen.
So is that, like, is that a joy of yours? Absolutely?
(28:32):
Such a rewardinging there you go. I love it. Well,
congratulations on your season. We'll continue watching you all, and
then I'll bring coach back in Coach Bailey. Okay, what
a team you got right here, great young ladies. Yes, yes, yes, yes,
so and and then so you guys have a few
more games in the league. Yes, I know you have
another big matchup with Palm Desert, but a few more
(28:54):
games in league.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Yeah, we got four more league games and then we
actually have one non league game this Friday against Desert
Christian Academy.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Okay, okay, and then playoffs yep, yes, yes, so we're
going to continue to watch you. Yes, we'll continue watching
you and look forward to seeing all the great things
you will do this season. And thank you again for
coaching the All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Of course, I'm very excited about it.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Yes, hopefully soon we'll have the location and we'll be
able to announce that. But we're looking forward and that's
going to be November fifteenth, once and we got you
your polar shirt.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Yes, ready to go.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
For all the young ladies that will participate, they will
get a custom jersey for a free, no charge to
the players. They'll keep for a lifetime. We will charge
the Paris to come in. We have to do that,
and then the MVP will get a partial college scholarship,
but we're looking forward to that. It'll be coach Bailey
and Coach Walker from Palm Desert and we're looking forward
to doing And I just appreciate the love and support
(29:48):
you guys have for this and being so involved because
you understand volleyball. You know volleyball. You're from the area.
You graduated here, so I appreciate all the time and
effort you're giving us.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Yeah, I appreciate you putting all together. I mean, I,
like you said, as a local high school athlete, I
would have killed to have an Ault Star game. So
I love that you're doing this for them and to
bring them that just more people to come love volleyball
and celebrate them.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
So absolutely, very cool. Absolutely well, thank you so much, Coach.
We're gonna go ahead and take no thank you. We're
gonna go ahead and take a quick commercial break, and
we have banning outside patiently waiting, so we will be
right back on the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am
your host, Coach B on Fox Sports Radio Herd in
Southern California on Fox Sports twelve seventy a m. And
I'm heard in Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight
(30:34):
point nine FM, and we are always streaming twenty four
to seven on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report on Fox Sports Radio.
Can't get enough of the Coachella Valley Sports Report, then
make sure you follow us. We're on X and Instagram
at CBSR Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach B on Fox Sports y'oh. Heard in Southern California
on Fox Sports twelve seventy a m. And I'm heard
in Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine FM.
And it's always We're streaming twenty four to seven on
the iHeartRadio app. And I want to thank these gentlemen
for patiently waiting. We ran over a little bit on
the last last interview, but that's the beauty of running
(31:19):
the station, because if we want this show to go
to twelve o five, twelve ten to twelve twenty, we
can do it because I answer to myself. So but
I'm excited. We have a gentleman astu Yo. I've watched
his career back in the Arroyo days, Edewanda Eagle. He
and my kids are all eagles. All three of my
kids are eagles, so I know a little bit about
(31:41):
his his story. I was so happy when I saw
because I think you for you were with Beaumont first
and then you made the transition over to Banning. Oh
let me let me let me get your hot coach.
Uh said that one more time.
Speaker 10 (31:53):
Yeah, I was there for a year.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Yes, yes, but I know you live in the area,
so it's it's good. And I'll tell you this. Coach.
First of all, please introduce yourself to the Fox Sports
radio audience.
Speaker 10 (32:03):
My name is Jake Nisil. I'm the head coach at
Banning High School.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
You don't have to come in with a smooth voice
more than me, coach. I mean, like the coach came
in like he about to do Midnight Love. I've been here.
Take a request. But the one thing, Coach, I some
of it. I have to ask a questions. I know
you went to Edawanda and then you moved out to Banning.
So when we bought the station out here, we still
live in Fontana. I tried to get the wife to
move out here, but I brought her in the summer.
I mean, what what's the way? And I brought her.
(32:28):
I made the mistake of bringing around here in July
and she said one word no. So but but how
do I get her to move out here? Coach?
Speaker 10 (32:36):
Well, I don't live out here. I live in Banning, Okay, okay, okay,
the middle ground, so we don't We don't get the
heat as much as out right.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Even I tried to get her to Cherry Valley. She said, no,
but it is what it is. But tell me a
little bit about with banding like we talked before, because
like I said, I've known you for years, coach, and
we've I've interviewed you many times and I was in Riverside.
Tell me a little bit about one team, one town.
I mean that's got to be great, you know because
(33:05):
we live on the in Fontana. We live on the
border and we live in Fontana. But my kids went
to Rancho in Needawanda. Yeah, but I mean there's five
schools that service that city. But is that great just
having one school?
Speaker 10 (33:15):
Yeah, it's cool because everybody knows everybody which there. I
mean there's pros and cons to that as well, but no,
it's cool. Like when you walk around town, people know
who you are. They watch the kids grow up, they
watch them, you know, all play Pop Warner all the
way up. So a lot of the businesses are locally
owned and they know, you know, they're either related to
somebody or so we do have a lot of support
(33:37):
and it's cool. Yeah. I like that because I grew
up Fontana as well, right, And like you said, a
ton of high schools I went to Towanda. There's Rancho,
there's lots soos. So there's there's so many schools right
around there. And you know, we do have one school
that we don't really talk about that's kind of close
to us.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
But right, right, right, right, right, yeah, and then tell
me a little something about about Banny. What has it
been like? And they said, one team, one town? What
has that been like for you?
Speaker 10 (34:02):
Coach?
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Now you're you're getting integrated. How many years have you
been there? Now?
Speaker 10 (34:06):
This is my third year, this is your third year.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
So now you have players that have been with you
for a while. They know what to expect, they know
the expectation, they know how you're going to coach, they
know what you're gonna do. They're running your office. They've
known it for a while. Is that why now you're
starting to see the success with what you got going?
Speaker 10 (34:21):
Yeah? So the first year it was rough. You know,
we were one and nine and I was trying to
get a feel for everything, and I had new coaches
with me, and we were playing a lot of freshmen.
So Jacob who's here with us right now, he was
our quarterback as a freshman and he went through it
right right, So you know, he freshman shouldn't be playing varsity.
It really shouldn't be, but due to the circumstances, we
(34:44):
had no choice. So we basically had a JV team
out there playing varsity games and the experience was great.
And I think that's why the success is showing now
because we're battle tested now, right.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
And last year it clicked. You went nine and two,
three and zero in league, and that's something that you
could build upon. Do you think that having that success
last year, now your players are starting to say, coach
knows what he's talking about. He understands it, he gets it.
And now you when you look at what you're where
you're at now, you guys are foreign to Now are
you starting to see that the fruits of your label
(35:15):
labor are starting to reflect?
Speaker 10 (35:17):
Yeah? Well I've been telling them them right this whole time,
so it's about time they started listening.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
I forgot to mention Jamari.
Speaker 10 (35:22):
Also played as a freshman, so we have both of
them here. They're both juniors now. So Jacob and Jamari
both played as freshmen and they went through the toughness
and so they went through it right.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
And and I'll ask you this, because they went through that.
Do you think that's something when it comes their senior year,
because that's four years of of varsity football, do you
expect them to take another leap if that's possible.
Speaker 10 (35:46):
Yes, No, absolutely, I think it's only it's only gotten
better and we're adding to it. We have more guys,
you know, just the guys we have here in the
studio today that are adding to it, and they're the
the understanding of the offense. I think they totally know it.
So they helped me out just as much as anybody.
We're on the sideline looking at stuff and they're telling
(36:07):
me adjustments that need to be made. So that's great.
They know the system and you know it's it's I
trust them. They trust me, so I think, you know,
we have good conversations and we come up with the
right game plans.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
And are your players because you stepped down for baseball
completely right, yes, yes, and you coached, and first of all,
let me say thank you for coaching the baseball also
class aah. We did it at the Palm Springs Stadium
that was built by the Angels. Geene Autry built that,
so it was it was like a professional stadium and
you you would hit me up and you said you
(36:38):
wanted to coach at your last Hourrah, What was that?
What was that experience like for you? Coach?
Speaker 10 (36:42):
It was awesome because we had I think four or
five seniors in that game as well, so it was
kind of there. And there was the whole reason I
was coaching. I didn't come to Banning thinking I was
going to coach baseball. Obviously I was there for football,
and then there was some circumstances that happened with the
baseball coaching and I stepped in and I was only
going to do it for a little bit, and then
(37:02):
they told me. I asked him. I was like, if
you guys want me to stay for your senior year,
then I'll stay one more year. So I was kind
of close with those seniors. So that was why I
wanted to coach that All Star game, to kind of
give him their their last thing, because they deserved.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
It right And I appreciate it. Coach, you did an
outstanding job. It's really good. And Coach Bailey, who's here,
She's going to coach our volleyball game, and I really
appreciate you coaches getting involved with that. We just try
to do the operation sides. You guys could just simply
go out and coach, it was a good game. It
was a really good game. So he's exciting to see
those young men do their do their thing. But you
(37:34):
have your football players in studio. Who did you bring
with you today? Coach?
Speaker 10 (37:38):
All right, we'll go down the line. We got Elijah,
we got Cecil, we got Jacob, we got Jamari, and
we got Kamari.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Okay, all right, excellent, and then we have one young
he's ready to go. He's like, hey, man, get me
on this mic. I need my moment. I love it.
Go ahead and introduce yourself to the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 11 (37:57):
Oh, I am Elijah human Is. I play outside linebacker
at Benning High School.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
So are you trying to be a DJ? I mean
he kind of be in smooth I watch out now.
So tell me a little bit, Uh what do you
What are your thoughts for this season? Because you've been there,
you started as a freshman. Correct, Oh oh no, I'm wrong, okay,
but tell me a little bit, my bad, my bad, coach,
grown player, But tell me a little bit about this season.
(38:22):
What are your thoughts of where you guys are going
and what you guys are doing.
Speaker 10 (38:28):
Currently?
Speaker 11 (38:28):
I think we're we're looking good right now. I mean,
we had a few battles a few weeks ago, we
had a comeback game that was actually that was really
good for like our team spirit and morale. As you
know about last night. That was a great game. They
played a little bit better football than us and just
(38:48):
felt like, I mean, we should have came out on top,
but they played better ball.
Speaker 10 (38:52):
And I just think this season is gonna be good.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Though. Now, I tell you, that's a polished young man.
I mean, what a response for this young man. I mean,
you are wise beyond your years. But when you're in
a game like that that's an absolute shootout, do you
ever think to yourself, man, can they just stop scoring?
I mean, hey, what's going through your brain when you
see something like that.
Speaker 11 (39:12):
I'm just like, man, offense, come on, you gotta give
us a little bit breakout here. Man, we gotta go
out there. They scoring, we scoring. It's just back and
forth and sometimes it's tiring, but it's fun at the
end of the day.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
And you know what's funny. I think it was Lincoln
Riley who says this. You said something that just stirred
a feeling to me and they said, sometimes when you
have a high powering offense, a high scoring offense, it
goes out there and scores quick. It's tough on the defense.
I mean, so if your team goes out there and
scores at two or three minutes, you're like, man, can
we get a breather? Is that something you think to yourself,
like slow it down? Brother?
Speaker 11 (39:44):
Yeah. Earlier in the season we had a game like that.
It was just bad.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (39:51):
They all go out there, like a few plays, score,
then defense gotta go back out there stop them. Then
they go and we don't really get a break. But
it builds care there. Yes, crazy dogs really.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yeah, And that's one of those things where it's it's
it's at those times when you're tired that you see
the real person comes out. But congratulations, young man. We
appreciate what you're doing this season. And then we'll continue
to watch you and then just bring up one of
your teammates. And then please come up and introduce yourself
to the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 12 (40:20):
My name is Jacobsladu, quarterback for Benny High School.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Okay, QB, All right, so were you? So were you?
How many years have you played varsity?
Speaker 10 (40:29):
All?
Speaker 12 (40:29):
Three years?
Speaker 2 (40:30):
So far, okay, and you're a junior so so now okay, okay,
I'm an old guy man, Like I always say, my
age now starts with a five. So I'm oh, so
sometimes you gotta you gotta forgive me. But what was
it like? Do you think playing as a freshman quarterback
has given you the experience where now you're seeing things
like my son played football, he played quarterback, and he
(40:50):
said the game slows down. Have you got to that
point where things seem like they're slowing down for you? Yeah?
Speaker 12 (40:55):
I feel like I see the game slower and like
just like the defense isn't moving us as it was
freshman year, and like I understand it better now, right?
Speaker 2 (41:04):
And are you are you telling coach hey, we need
to adjust this. So we need to do that because
you've been the quarterback, you are the coach out on
the field.
Speaker 10 (41:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (41:12):
If I see something I like, I'll signal to my
coach Neil and we'll run it.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
There you go.
Speaker 12 (41:17):
He trusts me and I trust him, all right.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
And you said your older brother got you to play football, Yes, sir,
what position did he play?
Speaker 13 (41:24):
Uh?
Speaker 12 (41:24):
He played quarterback as well.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Okay, so do you ever tell him hey, I'm doing
a little bit better than you.
Speaker 10 (41:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
No, do you the younger youngest brother.
Speaker 12 (41:31):
Or I'm younger than him, but not the youngest.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
Okay. I always asked because I am I am the youngest.
So you got the MVP last year of offense, sir?
How was that for you?
Speaker 10 (41:40):
That was amazing?
Speaker 2 (41:41):
Yes? So what are your goals for the rest of
this season?
Speaker 12 (41:46):
Coles personally is go back when league offense VP again,
but then for as a team when wins more games
in playoffs.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Yes, and I see now, I see you said five siblings,
So what what what number are you? And those five siblings?
You're number three? Okay, okay, So the funny thing I
always ask because it's funny because my dad it was
nine of them and my dad was number eight, and
I'm like, my goodness, was there food?
Speaker 3 (42:08):
You know?
Speaker 2 (42:08):
But congratulations young man, and we'll continue to watch you
as you go along with the season.
Speaker 10 (42:13):
Thank you, all.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Right, and then we bring our next young man. I'm
gonna call you the drift. I mean, my man came
up with the I like the can I borrow the chain?
Speaker 13 (42:21):
Man?
Speaker 2 (42:21):
I mean, let me look for aw the chain, but
go ahead and come up on that Mike and introduce
yourself to the Fox Sports Radio audience. Introduce yourself. Sorry, no, no,
you're good.
Speaker 14 (42:30):
My name is Cecil Anderson and I'm a cornerback for
Benning High School.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
Okay, excellent. So you're a corner and I always like
to ask corners this. Uh, who is the goat when
it comes to corners? Who's the greatest of all time?
Speaker 14 (42:41):
Jaylen Ramsey?
Speaker 2 (42:42):
Jalen Ramsey. You don't like Dionne. You don't like Prime Time?
Speaker 10 (42:45):
I do.
Speaker 14 (42:45):
I watched this highlights, but I think I like Jayleen
Ramsey the most.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Jayalen Ramsey, legit. I'll give you that. I'll give you that.
So what do you like about playing corner and what
was it? What was your thought for playing that?
Speaker 14 (42:55):
I thought about playing corner? Uh, I love it. I
think it's way better than our receiver. I think you
get to show your talents way more play play one
on them, one man coverage, right, so way more talent.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
So when you do that, So when you go because
a lot of times in high school they play zone,
but when you're when your coach trusts you and put
you man to man, do you see that as a
personal challenge and you said, I just got to beat
this guy.
Speaker 14 (43:20):
Yeah, of course I think I just gotta beat him.
I think just one of you, one me and you
out here, nobody else.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Yes, I love it. And the reason I said I
because Dion had to drip. You know, you look good,
you play good, they pay good. Uh, but tell me
a little bit about your season. Do you have goals?
I know you got a stat that you're trying to
get to or you want to break because everyone every
good corner knows the stats.
Speaker 14 (43:40):
Of course, you know. I want to be a ball
howk I want to have five picks. I don't to
have as many picks as I want as many tackles.
I just want to help the team.
Speaker 2 (43:47):
Okay. Is it better to break up a pass or
do you like to snatch it to look back at
the receiver.
Speaker 10 (43:51):
I like to snatch it.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
I love it. I love it. And then you said
your your big brother wanted you to play in high school? Right, yes, okay, excellent?
And then you like spending time with your nephew. What's
your brother and your nephew's.
Speaker 14 (44:03):
Name Christian, and my nephew name is Cary.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Okay, there you go. Well, congratulations, young man, you got
mentioned in leagues. Okayngratulations, we know you out there getting it.
But I tell you what the drip man, You gotta
look at Dian and you're bind me of a pride,
you know what I mean? So I love it. So
we'll bring the next young man up. He's got the
drip going to I like it. I like the man.
Let me borrow some of these chains. Man, I'm broke.
I'm broke. I need some change. And then he got
(44:27):
the good hair going. Man. I remember me and my
hair broke up. But it's all good. But go ahead
and introduce yourself to the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 7 (44:33):
I'm Jamark Garlington. I played receiver.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
I've been in high school. Okay, excellent. And what do
you like about playing receiver?
Speaker 7 (44:39):
Just a playmaker?
Speaker 2 (44:41):
Okay? Is there a time I'll say this when you
know you're going on? So you practice? Do you guys
see each other in practice?
Speaker 6 (44:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (44:49):
He can't go me though, Okay, Okay, I like it.
I like the confidence. That's what I'm talking about. Man.
So you said you started playing because your big brother
played before you as well. What position did he play?
Speaker 7 (44:59):
He played right back in linebacker.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Okay, So you think you're underrated?
Speaker 7 (45:03):
Why is that because I'm small and I'm just overlooked
by everybody.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
I know, I know what it's like. Man, I'm but
but but you you your top twenty in receiving in
the state. What does that say for you?
Speaker 7 (45:14):
I'm just better than other people?
Speaker 2 (45:15):
There you go? Who's your favorite? Who's your favorite receiver?
Speaker 7 (45:18):
Jamiah Smith?
Speaker 2 (45:19):
Jamiah Smith? There you going? Why do you like that receiver?
Speaker 7 (45:22):
He just a dog on the field, He got speed hands,
just nobody could guard him.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
There you go? So when you what goes? Do you have? Receivers?
A cocky? Now? You know, if be a receiver, you
gotta be uh because you want to You're gonna go
out there and beat everybody out there. So but what
are your personal goals for the rest of this year?
Speaker 7 (45:40):
Reach a thousand yards and hopefully once all have.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Now I know you know your numbers. Where are you
at on the yards right now?
Speaker 7 (45:47):
I'm six forty nine? But what up the stats in
from last week?
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Okay? So yeah, so you said you standing on business saying, hey,
they need to update my number. So how many of you?
So you got four games left? Yes, sir? So you
need the average about what eighty yards? To get to
that thousand.
Speaker 7 (46:02):
Well that's not like at least like three hundred.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
So watch out, excuse me, this young man is standing
on business. That's what I'm talking about. Man receivers. You know,
you know your numbers. So congratulations young man, and we're
gonna continue watching you this season. Thank you. They three
hundred men, he putting them down. And we got another
young man. Now I've known this young man for some while.
We do the like I said, we do the Inland
(46:25):
Empire All Star Games, and he was the MVP, not once,
but twice. He was the eighth grade MVP in football,
and he said, hey, just hold my pepsi. He comes
back and he's because he's a miner, I'm gonna say
hold my pepsi, you know. But he comes back and
gets the MVP of the basketball game and says, I
do this. But go ahead and introduce yourself to the
(46:45):
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 15 (46:46):
Audience, Kamary Horseman receiver banning high school.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
And tell me a little bit. How's the transition being
you're a freshman, No, no, you're sophomore. Now you're a sophomore. Now,
how has the transition been for you from you football
to high school? Football everything you expected.
Speaker 15 (47:02):
It's just kind of getting a feel to the game.
Because freshman year, I was a quarterback on jv I'd
even play receiver. So just making that switch from quarterback
to receiver, especially being on varsity and starting, it's just different.
Speaker 2 (47:16):
I hear you. Now, you said the reason you play
sports it is in your blood line. Man. Now, now
actually is your Is your younger brother still play a
youth Uh?
Speaker 15 (47:24):
No, he is a freshman currently.
Speaker 2 (47:26):
Okay, So so let me ask you this. It's in
your bloodline, man, I mean, some things have just got given.
Speaker 6 (47:32):
Man.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
But what is it like when you for you, when
you get out there and you see and you're playing receiver? Yes,
and you see that corner? Do you laughing like they
don't know who I am?
Speaker 15 (47:41):
Yeah, to be honest.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
And your uncle played in the league, right, yes, sir? Okay?
So what are your goals for you? I know, I
know you you want to get to the next level.
What are your goals for not being a sophomore for
your next Uh? You still have this your four games
this season, But what are your goals for the rest
of the season and in the next two years after that?
Speaker 15 (48:00):
The rest of the season is just to show out,
do what I can do to help my team the
most and be a leader. And then for as long
as the next two years ago just shoot, sohow college
is what I can do?
Speaker 2 (48:14):
Yes? And then you I mean as a freshman, you said.
I just realized. You say you play both ways as
a freshman. Yes, sir, my goodness, what do you like
doing better? Offensive? Defense?
Speaker 15 (48:23):
Offense?
Speaker 2 (48:23):
Offense and then the receiver. And then on defense you
play you said, corner, safety, safety, safety, you don't like
come down and crack and somebody.
Speaker 15 (48:30):
Well, every now and then I'll switch off from like
corner to safety.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
Yeah, and you know, I saw, I seen your highlights.
I mean, it looks like you made the transition pretty well, man,
So congratulations on everything you do can And I got
a chance to hang out with you last year at
the Baseball All Star Games where you were chilling out, man,
But congratulations on everything you do. Like I said, you
were the MVP of our All Star Game or eighth
grade All Star Games, so I knew you were going
to be a special talent at the high school level
(48:55):
as well. So we'll continue watching you as you progress on.
Thank youslutely. And then coach, we'll bring you back in.
You've got some players here.
Speaker 10 (49:04):
Absolutely, they made me look good man.
Speaker 2 (49:06):
Yes, yes, And that's one of those things. Do you
think that because you are such a small, small school
in small area, having all these players that play freshman,
you know, five to six years from now, I mean,
you're gonna have some some hogs out there.
Speaker 10 (49:20):
That's the plan. Yeah, I guess.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
You know.
Speaker 10 (49:22):
I'm always told about the history of Banning, and there's
some some deep roots, and there's the history of really
good football, really good athletics in general. And the big
thing when I got there was we got to keep
guys at home, right and right. So that's what we're doing.
And you know, we're putting a good product up.
Speaker 2 (49:39):
And I know you have your upcoming schedule. You have
twenty nine on the tenth, twenty nine Palms and then you
have Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City and then Desert Mirage.
Last year in Sun Valley, you guys had a phenomenal year.
Leak still leak starts next week. So YUCKA was a
non league.
Speaker 10 (49:58):
Yeah, twenty nine is also a non league.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Okay, okay, so three games so the Desert so you
guys won the league last year, so I know that's
got to be a goal to repeat that league again.
Speaker 10 (50:07):
Yes, absolutely, that's always the number one goal when the league,
getting the playoffs and see what happens and make noise.
Speaker 2 (50:13):
Yes, yes, So you guys are doing well for and two.
That's a really good start. Do you do you this
is your third year, are you starting to think to yourself, coach,
this is really starting to take shape and it's it's
and you're starting to see the foundation. You're starting to
see it all come together.
Speaker 10 (50:28):
For me, absolutely, I think next year, I mean we're
still this year, so, but you know, next year will
be the first year where everybody in the system is
only coached by me. Yep so, and not only by
me and by my staff, by everybody else. I'm not
the great staff, so I want to give them a
shout out as well. But you know, they don't have
any past coaches that are in, you know, that are
(50:48):
influencing them.
Speaker 2 (50:49):
Right.
Speaker 10 (50:50):
So the seniors now some of them actually a lot
of them played for a different coach, so they have,
you know, they have a little bit of experience with
a different coach. But after this year, then it's four
years of me.
Speaker 2 (51:00):
So it's all you. It's all you. So yes, I
love it. And I remember talking to Coach Davis and
he's saying that thing. Once you get to that mark,
then it's all you. It's all your influence, and that's
going to make life easier for you because they know
your offense, they know you. There's no more installing. You
may have different coordinators here and there, but it's your philosophy. Yes,
it's an in your freshmen and JV, they're running your
(51:22):
same offense.
Speaker 10 (51:23):
Yeah we only have two. We only have a JV.
We don't have a freshman okay, so but yes, absolutely
run the same system. So yeah, everyone's gonna know the
same system for all four years.
Speaker 2 (51:31):
There you go. You can't beat that. So that's good stuff.
So coach, want to thank you so much for coming
in and being a part of the Coachella Valley Sports Report.
Like I said, you you've you've visited me many times
when I was in Riverside. I know this isn't the
same you know.
Speaker 13 (51:45):
It?
Speaker 2 (51:46):
Yeah, a little bit closer. He's your drive for you.
You're going against traffic. So so yes, but as we said,
we'll continue to watch you and we continue to see
as you go along. Thank you always be but for
being so gracious. Uh you actually asked me if you
could coach the All Star Baseball Game, so I appreciate that.
And then when I asked you to come into the studio,
you were gracious to do that. So always been nice
(52:08):
to us. I appreciate it. Thank you so much, coach.
Speaker 10 (52:11):
Oh, thank you, thank you for everything you do. We're
happy that you're out in Palm Springs doing this now.
It is awesome. People out here need to get some
love too.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Yes. Absolutely, we're gonna take a commercial break, and then
when we come back, we have an interview with Yousef.
He was the MVP speaking of the All Star Game.
He was the MVP of the Coachella Valley Basketball Classic
last year, so we have an interview with him coming up,
so we'll go ahead and do that. Once again. We
had banning football in studio. We're looking for great phase
(52:37):
for them. If you get a chance, they're going to
be at home against twenty nine on the tenth, so
go out support them, get your tickets. It always helps
the athletic department. We're gonna take a commercial break. This
is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I'm your host, Coach
B on Fox Sports Radio, herd in Southern California on
Fox Sports twelve seventy eight M, and I'm heard in
Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine fas
(53:00):
as always, were streaming twenty four to seven on the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (53:04):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report on Fox Sports Radio.
Can't get enough of the Coachella Valley Sports Report, then
make sure you follow us. We're on X and Instagram
at CBSR Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach B on Fox Sports Radio. Heard in Southern California
on Fox Sports twelve seventy AM, and in Las Vegas,
I'm heard on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine FM.
As always with streaming twenty four to seven on the
iHeartRadio app. As you know, it's been a journey. We
took over twelve seventy AM at the beginning of the year,
(53:42):
flipped it over to Fox Sports Radio, and before we
even had any programming to get started, we wanted to
get into the community, so we created the Coachella Valley
All Star Classic, and then the next phase was the
Coachella Valley Sports Report. So when we did that, we
did a boys and girls All Star game, and we
did a boys baseball game. Now I'll tell you right now,
(54:06):
DCA showed up, showed out. That is Desert Christian Academy,
of course, because they swept. All of the game's MVP
Indie Girls game was from DCA, the MVP from the
boys game was from DCA, the MVP from the baseball
game was from DCA. And we are fortunate. This is
what we love to do. As players matriculate on to
(54:29):
the next level, we want to reach out and see
how their life is going and see where they are now.
So we are fortunate we have a young man on
the line. He was our MVP of the boys basketball game.
Speaker 1 (54:40):
Someone's calling in on the Fox Sports Radio Celebrity Hotline.
Speaker 2 (54:44):
By all means, let's see are you there call it
first or for boss, Let's make sure you're there.
Speaker 13 (54:47):
I'm there.
Speaker 2 (54:48):
I'm there, excellent, and please do your hometown a favor
and introduce yourself to the Fox Sports Radio audience.
Speaker 13 (54:55):
My name is Augustine Ustef. I grew up in the
Cochella Valley.
Speaker 10 (54:58):
I was born in.
Speaker 13 (54:59):
India, California, and I attended Desert Christian, calling me my
whole life from preschool all the way up until high school.
And I graduated from there.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
And that's and I'll tell you what a player you
became when you were in our All Star game. You
were highly recommended. And I'll tell you what typically what
we do, so people know, you know, Fox Sports rated,
we do not pick the MVP. What we do is
we go talk to the coaching staff. And it was
not it wasn't your coach though it wasn't partial. It
was a legit vote from the coach who let us
(55:28):
know that you should be the MVP. And he said, hey,
there's no one else who's done what he did. And
I'll tell you this, both coaching staff said that both
coaching staffs agreed that you should be the MVP. Tell
me a little bit about your performance the best of
the best of the valley and you were, without question,
the shiny star of that entire game. Tell me about
your experience with that game.
Speaker 13 (55:49):
That game was so much fun. I mean playing around
guys that I've been playing with since some some of
them middle school and then all over like we would
go play at the local rec centers and for our fitnesses,
Like even though we all didn't go to the same school,
we'd all be around each other. So finally being in
one game together that was so much fun. And then
we also as DCA, we never competed with the other
(56:11):
teams in the valley for the league. We were always
in a separate league. So finally playing with some guys
that are local, that was definitely a good experience.
Speaker 2 (56:18):
And do you think that it gave some uh some
confirmation at DCA is a legit school, a legit squad
because you are a special talent and and and do
you think you had the uh you carried d C
A on your back to show hey, we can play
as well.
Speaker 13 (56:35):
I wouldn't say I carried my team in my back.
But what makes DCA specials that obviously we're a Christian
school and we all put God first at the center
of everything, and everything that we do is done with
love towards one another, and it's more of a sacrifice culture.
So I think DCA was really helpful for me and
just it's it's great for the whole valley to see
(56:56):
how we play, because we want to sign we want
to sign the light of and shine bright and we
do it for each other. So that's what I think
makes DCA specially in every other school.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
And I'll tell you, DC, you guys are special student athletes,
and you guys are so grounded, so humble, and I
love it. But I'll ask you, what are some of
the moments you miss most about playing at d C
A d c A you went to DCA your whole
life or is there something that you missed from the
valley that you just can't get out where you're at now?
Speaker 13 (57:26):
Oh yeah, man, countless of fun experiences that I've have
with my teammates and and just the guys. The community,
the Coachella Valley community is so special because we're all
sets like one big family. It doesn't matter if you're
you know, from Coachella, Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs. Everyone
knows everyone. So that's what I definitely miss about the valley,
(57:47):
that everyone helps each other and we're all just a
big community. And then as far as DCA, what I
miss about that school, I mean the basketball program we
were we were again one big family, like we we
played with each other since middle school, so playing with
each other, I definitely miss all the all the connections
and the chemistry that we had.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
It was so much fun right and I could I
could certainly confirm that everyone knows everyone out of here.
I'm new to the market and I'm learning that, but
let everyone know now. So for those who do not know,
you graduated from DCA. You were the MVP in the
All Star Game, and I love it. You reached out
to me, you said, hey, I got an offer. I'm
(58:25):
going to school and let everyone know where you're at
now and just what you're doing because you're busy, you
are super busy. We had to work around your schedule
to make sure we.
Speaker 13 (58:33):
Got this later in the summer, right after. It was
about a couple months after the All Star Game and
after graduation happened. I ended up getting a call from
like one of the coaches over here at the University
of Texas at Arlington, and by the grace of God,
it all worked out and I was able to become
a part of the program and start establishing myself as
(58:54):
a Collusia asset. So it's been it's been fun learning
and growing as a player and texting myself, especially being
all alone here in a different state, away from family,
just by myself. It's been a great test and it's
it's truly what it's taught me the most out of
everything is that no matter what you do and if
you work, put your head down and they just work, work, work,
(59:16):
every single day, something will, something will come out of it,
like it's a guarantee. And my story is is a
is basically a perfect example of that. I had a
few offers graduating out of high school, but nothing that
I was I was planning on pursuing. But I mean
I just kept my head down, kept working, kept keeping
(59:37):
God first, and this happened. So it's definitely been a
very crazy past couple of months. But that's where I'm
at right now.
Speaker 2 (59:45):
I could imagine and I'll ask you now, now that
you're fully out there and you said you're you're you
go from being a part of DCA where you know everybody,
You've been there your entire life, the Coachella Valley knows everybody.
I would say you, what has been in college? Campuses
are huge and we know it, like they say, everything
is big in Texas. But now that you're at the
(01:00:06):
University of Texas Arlington, what has been the biggest adjustment
for you?
Speaker 13 (01:00:11):
I would say there's been a few adjustments have to make.
We can start off with like the non basketball park.
So the biggest adjustment obviously is the campus life. I
mean over here, I want to say there's forty plus
thousand students, so compared to DCA where I graduated from,
I think our whole high school had one hundred and
(01:00:32):
thirty kids. So I mean, if that isn't a big difference,
I don't know what to tell you, man, But the
different The second different thing is just college being a
student athlete. It's a lot different in college compared to
high school. I mean, teachers will definitely help you in
high school a lot more than they will in college.
(01:00:53):
And then the third thing I've had to adjust to
is time management. Just figuring out what I'm doing with
my time and making sure every every hour of the
day I'm being efficient with my time. There's no time
was set up right. And for the back twelve piece,
I would say the biggest difference is the physicality, athleticism,
(01:01:13):
the height, everything is like you said, everything is bigger,
but I mean at the Division one level. I mean
it's been it's been an adjustment for sure. You have
to pick up and and it's it's very much one
like you have one chance to understand, have to be
open to learn, and it's like a classroom. You have
(01:01:33):
to pick it up quickly because it's it's at this level,
everything moves so much quicker, so you have to be
more attentive when you're when you're playing.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
For sure, I totally can understand that. And I'll ask
you one quick question. I know you said you had
a couple of things that were panning out, But what
was it about uh University of Texas Arlington that you
knew this was the fit for you both academically because
DCA has a very difficult curriculum. What made you know
this was good for you academically and athletically, that this
(01:02:03):
was a place for me.
Speaker 13 (01:02:04):
I knew this was a place for me academic and
athletically because I looked at how my courses were going
to play out. What, especially my major being kinesiology. What
classes can I take that are going to help me
balance being a student and an athlete. And I think
the schedule here is very flexible, as you can do
online in person. A lot of the other schools, it's
(01:02:26):
hard to balance basketball with the classroom and the program
here that the counselors were able to help me balance
everything out. And then how I knew this was the
place for me on the basketball piece was I knew
coming here was going to be one of the biggest
opportunities in my life and I had to take it.
And just surrounding myself with high level players is going
to make me a high level player as well. That's
(01:02:48):
why I chose this place.
Speaker 2 (01:02:49):
We love that challenge yourself once again. This is Fox
Sports twelve seventy eight m and we have yourself on
the line. He was your MVP of last school years,
the inaugural Coachella Valley All Star Our Classic, the Boys
Basketball Game. And I'll ask you now that you've you've
transitioned and matriculated over to the college level, what are
I know? I know who you are, just talking to you,
(01:03:10):
being around you. I know your character. I know you
have goals for yourself. What are your goals this year
for your first year freshman year with the Mavericks?
Speaker 13 (01:03:18):
My first year this year, I want to be a
player that's going to be willing to learn and continue
to keep growing and understanding more about the game of basketball.
I I know my role now as a freshman coming
in playing behind a much older guys, much more experienced guys.
I want for myself to be able to come in
(01:03:38):
every day with a with a mindset of determination. I
don't want to give up even if things get hard.
I want to keep going, keep going as a player,
and then get as good as I can for even
if Like I, of course I want to play this year,
but if that doesn't happen, I want to just keep
going as a player, so by whenever my name gets called,
(01:03:59):
I'll be on hundreds, ready to go out there and compete.
Speaker 2 (01:04:01):
Yes, And then one thing I want to ask you.
We talked a lot about you starting out here in
the Coachella Valley, born and raised, local kid, made good
Division one basketball. But what do you do off the court?
What's your favorite part of college life? Like you said,
it's like you're in a big college campus. Is like
a city, forty thousand people on a college campus, and
(01:04:22):
that is bigger than most cities in America. What do
you do for fun? What have you learned? Have you
fallen in love with? With the barbecue out there? What's
going on?
Speaker 13 (01:04:32):
To be honest, man, I haven't tried any Texas barbecue.
Yet it's crazy, man, I mean, I've been missing out,
but definitely will try and I'll let you know for sure.
But I would say my favorite thing to do off
the court right now is just genuinely talking to my family,
like since I can't see them, facetiming my family, catching
(01:04:54):
up with them, you know, lapping over the phone, talking
to my level ones, all the people that I missed
back home. That something I've been I've been taking seriously
off the court, just since I can't spend time in person.
My family is doing a virtuity, so I'm big on
doing that. And then I found a nice church out
here that I've been going to and I have made
some good friends out here that are helping me off
(01:05:16):
the court, going to church with these youtubs and stuff.
So that's that's what I've been meanly doing them off.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
Well, we love it. I'll tell you this, Texas got
a really good one. One of your time is that remember,
don't forget about the valley. Come back home. A lot
of times people go and they don't come back. We
want you to come back home. I'll tell you this
to make to bribe you to come back as soon
as you get off that plane. I'll have an in
and out double double waiting for you, but they won't
have them in Texas. Now back home, right right, So
(01:05:43):
as soon as you get off that plane, we will
take care of you. We can't wait. We're so proud
of you here. Like I said the first, it was
the first event I did in the Coachella Valley, and
you just dominated. I looked at the highlights and all
the film and footage we saw, and you can see
above and beyond you were. You were one of the
best players on the courts. And when you let me
know you got that Division one offer, I knew it,
(01:06:04):
and I knew that you had the talent to do it.
And we're just so proud of you, yousef, and we
look forward to continue watching you as you continue on
your journey at the Division one lest Thank.
Speaker 5 (01:06:14):
You so much.
Speaker 13 (01:06:14):
Thank you so much, and I'll guest our game for sure.
I'll be watching that one.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
I appreciate it and we and we will be watching you.
Thank you so much for the call in. Continue to
celebrate yourself because you've done in a phenomenal job. I
know your family and DC are really proud of you.
Thank you so much. Man, all right, you two, you
have a great one, and this is the Coachella Valley
Sports Report. I am your host, coach be on Fox
Sports Radio. Heard in Southern California have Fox Sports twelve
(01:06:41):
seventy a m. And I'm heard in Las Vegas on
Fox Sports ninety eight point nine FM. And as always,
we're streaming twenty four to seven on the I Heart
Radio app. Thank you so much for hanging in with us.
I know we ran a little bit over today on
the Coachella Valley Sports Report, but that's the way we
love it. If we get more pro we will expand
this show. Our ultimate goal is to make this show
(01:07:04):
a two hour show, and when we get people like
Yoursef calling in all the way from Texas, it lets
us know that we will eventually reach that goal. So
once again, thank you so much for listening to the
