Speaker 1 (00:01):
We're broadcasting from the Fox Sports Radio studio in Paul Springs.
It's time for the show that brings you everything local,
a local power house, everything Coachella Valley, one of the
most beautiful places in the country. This is Coachella Valley
Sports Reports with your host, Coach B. Bringing you the score, stories,
(00:22):
and spotlight moments from the teams and athletes that make
this valley proud.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Proudly covering these young men and women.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
All local, all the time, covering the valley. Now, Coach B.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Coach B is the man.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Let's get started.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach B on Fox Sworts Radio heard in Southern California,
Fox Sports twelve seven AM. And I am heard in
Las Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point nine FM.
And as always, we are streaming twenty four to seven
on the iHeartRadio app. Now, this is the first ever
youth football media. I don't know if I can call
(00:59):
them you football. They're bigger than me, so I was
a little nervous there. They were intimidating young men. I
tell you, the valley has got some players coming down
the pipe. But we have our first ever youth program
in Palm Desert, Lacitta running Rebels. Now, coach, did I
get that right? All right, I'm gonna have you come
up on the mic and then do me a privilege,
(01:21):
do me the privilege of introducing yourself to the Fox
Worst radio audience.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Well, my name is Coach Frankel. I've been coaching here
in the valley for many many years now. I'm doing
my best to help these kids develop where they need to.
You know, not many people out here in the valley
are about player development. Mostly people about those wins and
the losses.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Come up a little bit closer to the mic.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Coach, at the end of the day, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Now we get here.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
As long as these boys are getting better, you know what,
that's what matters. That's what makes the difference, you know
what I mean?
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
And then to tell me a little bit about about
your team. Tell us the age group that you are with,
division you're coaching at.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
It's fourteen U fourteen. You I believe we're d one, right,
Terry PDLQ. Out here there's a looking thits together, a
combination of it, you know what I mean. So anybody
from eleven to fourteen years old could join and get
in the mix. Those who want to be a part
of it with our unlimited weight. Not many kids here
in the valleys. They hear unlimited weight and they're scared.
They don't want to get in that mix. Everyone wants
to be a part of something different, you know. But
(02:17):
when you go to high school, it's unlimited weight already,
So it's best to get prepared now and by the
time you get to high school year, you know what
to expect.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yes, indeed, and you appreciate you to the choir.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
They called me Coach B because I used to run
a team called the Fontana Lanswers and we were AAU
And that's what I would always tell parents. You know,
when your kids get to that high school level, there
is no weight limit, so you have to be out
there and play. And this is one thing I know.
When kids get out there, that's usually when the heavier
kids couldn't play youth football. When the get to high
school's when they start to dominate. So but tell me
(02:46):
a little bit what made you want to get involved
with coaching.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Why are you involved with PDLQ.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
Well, growing up, I didn't have those father figures who
were involved with me in my sports. You know, if
I would have had someone there to help guide me
and take me where I needed to be, I would
have been something special, something great as well. But you know,
there was just too much distractions in my world of living.
I just didn't have opportunities. So I've tried to make
myself a mentor for these young kids, these young men
who they will be soon, and make sure they grow mentally, physically,
(03:14):
and they're available to be who they want to be. Yes,
there's not that many people out that that will do
that make that sacrifice.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yes, and I took my cap to you. I commend you.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
You know, I appreciate what you're doing because I know
the feeling the same thing. I had the dad issues,
so I know what it's like to not have a
father in the home and being around. I grew up
when I was a kid until I moved. I graduated
from Downe High until I was thirteen, I lived in
the city. Not many people heard of it. It's called Compton, California,
but that's where I was from. So that's where I
grew up as a kid. So I know what it's
like to have the opportunities because a lot of times
(03:45):
people don't realize this. What stops a kid from becoming
a gang member's usually choices. And if you have a choice,
if you have a mentor and someone positive in their life,
they can help direct them.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
So you hit a key.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
So you said something that it really struck me because
I know the exact feeling had I've had that mentorship
as a kid. Who who knows what my life could
have gone as exactly. So, but I sucked in sports,
so I wouldn't have been too good. But so that's
why I always tell these young men they're coming up, coach,
let me know who you have. But I'm gonna tell
them be nice to you bench warmers because I was
a bench warmer and they might become a Fox radio
one day.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
So, but who did you bring with you today, coach?
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Well, I got jeff O come pos with me. I
got my theol Rios. I got Vega right here, Fernando Vega,
and we got Brandon right here. All right, let's go
my boys right here.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
There you go. Let's so let's bring the first young
man up.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Come on, if you want to be right up on
that mic and talk right into it, go ahead and
introduce yourself to the Fox Sports radio audience.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
My name is Jeff o'compo. I played for the road Runners.
I've been playing tackle football for three years.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
At what position do you play?
Speaker 5 (04:50):
I play running back and linebacker?
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Okay, so what do you like better? So you like so?
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Since you were so, here's the interesting thing about a
running back. A running back is trying to run over
the linebacker. The I'm back us try to run over
with and running back. So what do you prefer to play?
Offense or defense?
Speaker 5 (05:04):
I prefer to play offense.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Okay, So when you so, how many do you know
how many touchdowns you have this year?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Don't tell me seven hundred and ninety two. But how
many touchdowns you got this so far this year? Young man?
I think five?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Okay, there you go. That's five more than I ever had.
But what is it about about your team that you like?
Pd LQ road Runners.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
I like the teamwork and the heart we put into
the game. I like cow what is called we all
work as a team?
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Uh huh?
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I like the coaches. Okay? And are you in the
eighth grade? Yes? Do you know what high school you
go to next year?
Speaker 1 (05:37):
No?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I don't, Okay, Okay, well.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
You know if you guys, I don't know if they
make announcement yet, but when you guys get ready to
let me know. So congratulations on your season, young man.
Thank you so much for coming into Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
All right, let's bring our next young man up, number
pick twenty six.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
What's going on, young man? Go ahead and introduce yourself, Terrios. Okay,
what position do you play?
Speaker 4 (05:57):
I play left tackle?
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Okay, come up on the mic a little bit. There
you got left tackle.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
I play.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I play wherever my coaches need me.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Okay, there you go, because I want to make sure
you're on the mic. You could be hurt. I know
your parents are here, but you know, girls at school,
you know you want to sound smooth, you know, so
they know you know what I mean, what it's about.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
So, so you said, what position do you play? Again?
Speaker 4 (06:15):
I play left tackle?
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Left tackle? What do you do now?
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Like I said, I coach football, and people don't realize
that if you don't have do your teammates know this.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
If you don't have.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
A line, you don't have an offense. Have you educated
them on that fact?
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, Okay, what do you like about playing left tackle?
Do you like the pancakes. I mean, do you bring
syrup out there when you're out there pancaking the defensive players?
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Yeah, I like that pancakes. I just I just love
being on that line. Uh huh. So I love protecting
my running backs. I love doing my job out there.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Now do you run it? I know your running back
just came up. Now when he gets to the to
the end zone. You know, let's say it's it's first
and goal and he gets in that ending zone and
he comes on the left side, did he come back
to you and say, hey, thank you because I wouldn't
have got here without you. Does he not say that?
Speaker 5 (06:56):
He didn't say anything. He just like thank me for that,
for that blox.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
There you go. That's what I'm talking about. I love it.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Well, congratulations you you're in the eighth grade as well, right.
Do you know where you'll be going next year? Lakita okay, excellent. Well,
congratulations young man. We're looking forward to you the rest
of the season. We got another number, big number sixteen
coming up.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
There.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You go go ahead and introduce yourself to the Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Radio art arm.
Speaker 6 (07:18):
I'm for not a viggag junior. I play a quarterback
and I'm number sixteen.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
That's smooth voice. He's ready to do the midnight show.
What is your name?
Speaker 6 (07:25):
Young man? For now?
Speaker 2 (07:27):
You did say that? I did.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I'm getting old. My my ad starts with a five,
So I'm getting old, young man. I'm still alive at fifty,
I'm still alive. But what do you like about being
QB one?
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Definitely like throwing into Jeff over here?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Okay, I just.
Speaker 6 (07:40):
Love my line. I love my teammates.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Oh see you get propped tot's see.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Being the quarterback, you know that if you get hit
blind side, you know your lineman's gotta gotta protect you. Right, Yeah,
So what do you like better? You like throwing the touchdown?
You like running the touchdown?
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (07:55):
Definitely throwing. I'm a pocket pascity.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Now, now, who's your favorite NFL tea? Because you're wearing
number sixteen. That's your favorite NFL teams?
Speaker 2 (08:01):
The Raiders. You hurt my heart? Why number sixteen?
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Did you?
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Is there a like sixteen?
Speaker 6 (08:06):
My uncle warret when you are when you went to
high school?
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Oh there you go play quarterback? What's uncle's name? There
you go? I love it?
Speaker 3 (08:15):
So does he help help mentor you? And say this
is what I do. This is how I break it down. Yes,
that's I love it, man, I love it. With congratulations
number sixty. It has meaning to it.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
This young man's got character so in Miss Vega, thank
you so much. But those are quarterbacks. Quarterbacks just think different.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Man. You guys are just just different. But thank you
so much.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Congratulations, and we're going to continue watching you this season.
And then we have one more young man coming up,
number fourteen. He was a little bit bigger than me,
looking down on me. Come on, now, you ain't gotta
do me like that, all right, Come up on and Miken,
introduce yourself to the Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Name is Brandon Diaz.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
I'm number fourteen, okay, and I like the name Brandon
because my youngest the name is Brandon.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
So I love the name Brandon. So what position do
you play? Brandon?
Speaker 5 (08:54):
I play linebacker and a little bit of online.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Okay, So when you play the line back or do
you play the mic linebacker? Or do you run the
defensive line?
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
So when you're out there, are you in the quarterback
and looking at each other because he's trying to see
if you're figuring out the defense and this and that
you guys, So, do you guys laugh if he calls
the wrong play? Do you sit there and laughing like
this is the formation? I know I'm about to lay
you out. Do you get excited about that?
Speaker 4 (09:20):
I mean, yeah, I want to see.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yeah, so this young man, I tell you he will
run you over and laugh about it.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
So when you get a good crack on the quarterback,
do you say, I'm gonna be here all day?
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah, there you go. I love it. I love it.
So and then you play on the line as well. Yeah,
so do you bring syrup as well? And you put
the bag cakes?
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
So you're quiet, but I bet you when you're out there,
you become a different animal.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Right, Yeah, I'm animal.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I love it. I love it. And you're an eighth
grader as well. Yeah there you go. So congratulate. Do
you know what high school you're going to?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
LQ?
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Okay, Well, congratulations, young man. Will continue to watching you.
Like I said, I love the name Brandon because my
son's name is Brandon. So congratulations on your season, and
then we'll bring your coach back in so great, thank you,
great young men, you got here.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Coach. I absolutely love it.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
I'm trying to shape the future for them, man, you
know it's the best thing to do.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Yes. Do you know how many more? How many more
games you guys have this year?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
We got about four more, okay, and you're hopefully playoffs.
We gotta make that.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
And you said you're unlimited, way, so what what what
conference or what what organization do you guys play with?
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Is it not a EU? Right?
Speaker 4 (10:23):
No?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
J w A f okay, okayj okay, so so so
cal Joss.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
They're they're unlimited now huh.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yeah, I did not know that, okay because when when
I was years ago, when I was, I was with
the Fontana Titans, they weren't unlimited.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
So they've made that change.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
Things are always changing. Yes, it's the funny thing about it.
Everything's always changing every year, something new.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yes, yes, And I'll tell you I'm a proponent of
the unlimited weight because then you can have kids that
are heavy and younger playing against kids that are there
their age, not necessarily a ten year old playing with
the fourteen year olds.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
So that's that is that. I love that.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
That is great to hear. So tell me a little
bit about your season. Was there anything this year when
you guys start, Hey, we could be a special team.
Let me know, let me name drop, let me know
what's going on out there with PDLQ.
Speaker 4 (11:09):
Well, you know, they started off slow. We do have
some players that are barely getting in the mix, belly learning.
So there is a learning curve in any organization, any
team with all the freshness going on. But it's our
job as coaches to get them up to level, get
them up to speed right, get them where they need
to be. So we started off slow, We started off slow,
but they're picking it up. You know, just like that
freight train. Once those wheels start to go, you ain't
(11:29):
gonna stop that train. You right to move out the
way or you're gonna get ran over. So those wheels
are starting to move right now, they're starting to move.
So we're hoping for big things. We're hoping to be
blessed and make sure we stay healthy unto the end
of the season and we're able to accomplish our goals
and what we need to do playoffs first and then
hopefully a championship. But these boys got to get it
pick it up, and us coaches got to do our
job as well. We got to make this happen.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Well, I tell you, coach, You've got me feeling like
I can be a bitch warmer again. You just motivated me.
You got me hype name drop because I know it's important.
You have your assistant coaches.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Yeah, I got my assistant coaches. I got Gilbert Olivadees
and they got Chris Godman is out there helping me out.
And they're very good guys. You know. They step in
and help me wherever I need. If I have something
going on, they step in and do what needs to
be done. And just you know, put my shoes on.
Even though sometimes we have bigger feet or who someone
has smaller feet, But they're in my shoes making it happen,
you know what I mean, the best for the team,
(12:20):
best for the boys. There's no how you say, daddy
ball going on in my league. I make sure all
my boys get a fair shot to do their part.
I got no kids, no cousin, no family on this team,
and people ask me, hey, why do you coach? Why
are you out there? You got no kids? I go
why not? I love football. I don't have to have
kids or family members on my team for me to
be involved in my community and make a difference. I
(12:40):
love football. I love seeing the kids' faces when they
develop and do something great. They go on to high
school and they do something great. Hey, you know what
my coach helped me get here, right, that's a blessing
right there.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
And I'll tell you for anybody out there that's looking
to sign up their kids, that's special. And I'll say
this is why. Now, my son was my quarterback, but
he was gifted. He played high school quarterback. My son
was really good. He's not like me because I was
terrible at athlete, but he was really good. But but
I've seen that with the Daddy ball and it's kids
that should not be in those positions.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Yea, for many years ago, I've coached him, but I've
never favored him, right, But I've never had that issue
because my son, he's always been one of the best. Yes,
little Alfred Franco he plays d line for looking at
the high school right now, and he's one of the
best in the valley. And that's you know, thank God
that I've allowed other coaches to be able to coach
him and he's a coachable player, yes, And what I
coach him, I never favored him. I told him. Hey,
(13:29):
you don't under spot, you don't un the spot, you're
gonna be on the bench. It is what it is.
But I've never had that issue with that boy.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
And it's it's tough because when you coach your son,
you have to be harder on your own kid than
anyone else. So so sometimes I wish I hadn't coached
my son, but it is what it is. But he
you know, he's he's almost six feet tall. I don't
where he gets from. I don't know, not me because
I sucked. Yes, yes, but it's but it's all good.
But like I said, that's specially when you have someone
that does that, that gets involved with the kids. Oh
(13:56):
and then your administrative staff, your AD, your coach's mom,
what are their names as well?
Speaker 2 (13:59):
One always give them the love as.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Well, well. David Penya, Marina Pena, you got Freddie Rios
has my medic you know what I mean. They're there
to help us out and they do a really good job. Man.
I've had some some ads in the past that didn't
really be involved much. They were always shy and embarrassed
of being in the mix. But these ones are, they're there, man,
They're there to go and make it happen. I have
less stress about paperwork and players and contacting parents because
(14:23):
that takes away from the game plan, the system, what
I gotta do and being having having less worries, Man,
it helps everything be great.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Absolutely well.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
That's that's always important, Uh, when you have a support
staff like that.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
And that's why I always like that.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Like I said, for years, that's why they called me
coach be because I coached youth football for years and
I know what it's like because you're all volunteers out there.
No one's getting paid to be out there. You're volunteering
your time. You want to be involved in healthy kids.
And at the end of the day, that's that's the
greatest thing. Once they go off the high school, I
know your son's there. Once they go off to the
high school and you see them develop and become players,
that's that's special.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
That's good.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
That's the blessing right there. Being able to see that
they made it and that they're doing better than where
they started at. YEP, that's a big difference, you know.
And I do coach multiple teams out here in the valley.
I also do grow softball. I'm not just a football coach.
I do grow softball, I do flag football sans FNL,
and I also I have my own seven on sevent
team called the seven six Soul Valuaboys. You guys might
(15:16):
have seen them on Instagram. Yes we are. You know
the number one seven on seventeen out here and hold.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Hold up saying that one more time.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Let's see seven and six Sould Value Boys is the
number one seven on sevent team in the valley. And
we proved it last year. We came home with four championships.
Last year. We beat everybody out here in the valley,
and we had teams that had to cheat us just
to beat us. You know what I mean. They were
over there putting eighteen year olds in the fifteen youth division,
putting fifteen year olds in the fourteen thirteen year division
just to beat us. Yes, and I'm like, wow, you
really have to cheat us to beat us?
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Yeah, yes, yes, I were trying hard to.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Come at us last year, but we came home with
four championships last year.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
I've seen that before.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
My youngest son was on the five and six team
and I was coaching the seven and eight and the
kid that played against us in the seventh and eighth.
All of a sudden in the playoffs, that kid was
playing against the five and season.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
And it's sad.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
I mean, because at the end of the day, this
is youth football. If someone gets hurt or something happens,
I mean, what did you win? What did you accomplish?
It defeats this. You're teaching a child how to cheat,
and it defeats the spirit of the game. But I
tipped my cap to you for being honest and honorable.
That's really good. So we'll continue to watch Palm Desert,
La Keita road Runners. As you guys go along, keep
(16:22):
in contact with us. Is you young men partriculate on
the high school and you do your thing. Just remember
to do that because I remember I've been doing this.
I was in Riverside for ten years and it was
this kid that went to Cahone. He was a quarterback.
He came on my show in the ninth grade, went
to Arizona State LSU. I think he plays with the
Commanders now. I think his name is Jaden Daniels. I
don't know what ever happened to him, But don't do
(16:42):
me like Jayden did. Now he doesn't return my calls,
So don't do me like that. But thank you guys
for coming in. We certainly appreciate you all. Congratulations on
your season, and we're gonna take a quick commercial break.
This is the Coachella Valley Sports Report. I am your host,
Coach B on Fox Sports Radio, heard Southern California on
Fox Sports twelve seventy am, and I'm heard in Las
(17:03):
Vegas on Fox Sports ninety eight point ninety am. And
as always, restreming twenty four to seven on the iHeartRadio app.
