here's your host, Ashley Oakley.Hey, it's Ashley and we are live
on the Cody Wyoming Podcast. Ifyou didn't know, this is Ashley Oakley,
Annie Oakley's long lost sister. We'relive in Cody, Wyoming today with
(00:49):
the Man in Tan. He's someoneI saw play at the Irma last night
and he's become a local legend.Welcome, sir, Hello. Tell me
about how you got to Cody.Well, that really has to back up
and ask a question. How didI get to Wyoming, the state that
saved my life? Oh? Well, you're not even from here. I'm
(01:10):
not even from here. It tookme fifty years to get here, but
I got here as fast as Icould, and they'll be burying me here.
I'm not leaving. This is myhome. So tell me a little
backstory. Well, I've been aprofessional touring musician for over twenty years.
And when COVID hit, I wasin the twelve days in of a seventy
two run tour that was going topay me really, really, really well.
And then I was going to beable to take some serious time off.
(01:34):
And COVID hit twelve days in andwiped everything out. And so now
I went from making a lot ofmoney to no money instantly, And I
mean just in five minutes, youknow. And I put up an ad
on Facebook. I just put upa post, anybody got any work,
you know? And the universe respondedback in five minutes. And I heard
from a guy that I haven't heardfrom since we graduated in ninety two,
(01:57):
and he just asked me if Icould still weld, and I said,
well, anything but the crack yourass and a broken heart. And he
said, well, get on downhere because I can't keep anybody on the
job site. So and where wereyou then? I was in Colorado.
I've been in Colorado since since ninetythree. So I moved up to Colorado
from Arizona right after I graduated. So I went down there to Arizona,
and it was a real profound momentfor me. I left Arizona because one
(02:23):
I couldn't take the heat, nevergot adjusted to it, and two I
just didn't want to end up likeeverybody else there. It was. It's
a real down or state, youknow. We kind of grew up in
a little bit of poverty for sure, you know. And I just didn't
want I didn't want a bunch ofunworking cars in the front yard and my
house up on blocks. I justI knew that if I stayed there,
(02:45):
my chances of ending up like thatwere that. And so as soon as
I graduated, I just moved toColorado and bought a house there and had
two wives in that state, notat the same time. They were two
separate marriages, you know. Igot married really young, like like at
twenty two or something like that. When COVID hit. I was down back
(03:07):
in Arizona and I was doing whatI said I would never do. I
made a deal with the universe ata very young age that if if I
leave at you know, Arizona,I'm never coming back. And as long
as I could always make a livingwith my music and not work for somebody
else, I'd never seek fame orany of that other stuff. I just
wanted to be able to pay mybills. To me, that was a
blessing and of itself. So thatwas the manifestation that I started with very
(03:30):
early on, and that's exactly whatended up happening. And then when COVID
hit I was down there. Iwas back in Arizona. And now I'm
digging holes and welding and doing allthe stuff I said i'd never do again.
And you can take moments like that, I call them challenge sections.
I learned to kind of read theuniverse a long time ago, and it's
(03:51):
gotten just stronger and stronger as I'vegone. And I've really hired my vibration
considerably in the last six months.Every once since I got to my owning,
thing started just vibrating. When youwere in Arizona, win was that
that was twenty twenty. That wastwenty twenty, and you realized that you
were doing the exact same thing yousaid you'd never do. Having a challenge
section, yeah, A challenge sectionalcatfult To to Wyoming. Well, what
(04:13):
it ended up happening was I,Well, I was down on my knees
digging holes and sweat my ass off. I had a moment and I said,
oh, I see what's happening here. This is a this is one
of those challenge sections. So Isaid, okay, well here's the deal,
and I'm speaking to the universe Ican normally do. And I said,
you know what, the first statethat calls me up to go back
to doing what I was meant todo, I'm selling my house in Colorado
(04:35):
and I'm moving to that state, and that's where they're going to bury me.
And when I got up off theground, another thing I decided to
do was I was going to outworkhis entire crew. I was like,
if I'm going to do this, then I'm gonna do it like I do
the level of the man in tanYou know it's going to be full hundred
and ten percent. And so Igot abof the ground and I started running
(04:56):
everywhere I went. I worked hisboys into the ground. He could not
believe that they could not keep upwith a fifty year old man. I
had four twenty one year olds outthere fit in front of me and keeping
them hall going. And when Igot done, he was great. He
wrote me a big giant bonus checkand said, man, you made me
a ton of money, Thank youvery much. But when I got up
from the ground, when I hadthis, my phone rings and there's a
(05:18):
text and and it was a clientof mine in Wyoming. That says,
Helly Harley, We're not falling forthis bullshit to get up here and do
your show. We're not We're notdoing the COVID thing. And the angel
spoke, and the angel spoke justlike that, and uh. And so
we set a date and I hadtwo more weeks to go. So I
finished out two weeks from my buddyand h and I basically did exactly what
(05:41):
I said I would. I wenthome to Colorado. We sold the house.
I made sure my former wife wasset up really nice where she wanted
to be in a mountain town, and my daughter wanted to stay in Fort
Collins. So we just made sureeverything. We sold the house right,
we did the divorce right. Everythingwas super great. Everybody wasn't really jealous
of how they're like, you guysare actually having fun in your divorce and
(06:02):
we're like, we will love eachother. You know. It had nothing
to do with that. It wasjust said I could not be in Colorado.
I had a different future, andI knew that we did everything right
and bought a truck and a traveltrailer and went to Wyoming because then I
didn't know if I was going tobe able to keep touring, and if
I did, I'd have to probablybe Freedom States. Okay, so where
(06:23):
did you end up in Wyoming firsttime? Oh, that would have been
Rollins and I can tell you yeah, my client, Yeah, yeah,
my client was buyer chief or hewas a fire chief for a long time.
He was really what really catapulted thewhole man in Tan thing that that
thing just happened once I met Autumn. I met Autumn and things for me
instantly changed. So let's kind ofdo a little tighlight listeners. So you
(06:45):
moved to Wyoming and go playing Rollins, and then how do you meet Autumn?
I actually met her at a showshe was I was performing in touring
ten or something like that on aTuesday night for a buddy of mine who
I was one of those all inone shops. It's the truck stop,
the mechanics shop, the bakery, that liquor store. They all got liquor
stores, and so he would neverlet me come through town without performing form.
(07:10):
So it was a Tuesday night, you know, just doing a dinner
show, and she was there onwork and I met her. And that
was an interesting thing because when shewalked through the door, it was like
I had a flash in my headof her face and her eyes and her
smile, and it was of thisthis person that I built in my head
(07:30):
when I was a young, realyoung man and started thinking about being interested
in the opposite sex when I foundout about women. You know, So
your dream girl walks through the store, she does, and she has this
she has this smile and it's justcaptivating. And you know, nature took
care of its course after that, you know, and she fufilled your career
took quite an interesting place, Ican see. Yeah, And the reason
for that is is because I neverever felt worried to play in front of
(07:54):
her. She was the only personin my life ever ever that I could
just do it or sing or trystuff out and not and not have any
um. I wasn't judged in herpresence. Yes to let you feel free.
Yes, she gave you feel toliberty. Absolutely. Liberty is actually
the ultimate form of love. Appabsolutely, and it changed everything for me.
(08:16):
And it was such a unique feeling, like feeling for a musician.
You know. I didn't realize howmuch stress I would put on myself from
trying to live up to other people'sexpectations. I think that's something that I
hid really, really well and justBut when I got in her presence and
I just didn't feel like I hadto do anything like I could if if
(08:39):
I played a five wrong notes ina row. It didn't feel like I
was judged on that with her,And I don't know what that was about,
but I knew that it was somethingnew and it was something that I
really really liked and I gravitated to. So tell me the name of the
song that you wrote for her withoutit's so cool, because this story is
so amazing. So the song wasnever written. He literally knew. He
said I'm going to write you asong right now, and he opened his
(09:01):
mouth and the song came out,and it's beautiful. He plays it in
his shows. I would encourage you, if you're listening to this, make
sure you go see the Man inTan if he's in your area or seek
him out. So what's the nameof the song. The name is song
as I Do. You can findit on YouTube. Just look up the
Man in Tan performs I Do forhis wife or something like that, and
you'll see autom sitting there. Okay, but you're on iTunes too, right,
Yeah, I'm on iTunes and Spotifyand all that. It's an album,
(09:24):
but I haven't. I have songscoming out. I don't have a
full album completely pressed, but there'sfive there's five songs that are out there
for people. Okay, yeah, yeah, and I keep releasing them one
song at a time because it takesabout three months to do a song with
all the production and my producers outin Sweden, so we have that whole
thing we have to deal with.Well, that's exciting. So it sounds
like you have a lot of libertyand freedom right now and you're feeling a
(09:46):
lot like there's some more for you. Yes, absolutely, absolutely, Once
everything just rapidly started progressing once Imade that decision in my mind when I
was on the ground and zone anddig in the hole. From that moment
on, I always tell people outmy shows, you know, you're always
one decision away from a completely differentlife, and it's up to you.
(10:09):
Yeah, good advice for the listenersbecause right now that a lot of people
that are listening are struggling and theydon't know how to make that decision.
So how would you encourage someone tomake the hard decision? You know,
for me, if it's something that'salways on your brain, it keeps coming
back to you, and it's somethingthat no matter how much space or time
you put between it, you stillsee yourself thinking about being there in this
(10:31):
situation. Then that is your innervibration, your inner spirit, inner being
telling you, hey, this iswhat you're supposed to be doing. And
a lot of people, like yousaid, do I have a really hard
time and just are scared to makethat jump? I fortunately was. I've
been coming back to the earth forseveral lives now, you know. And
(10:52):
I was born with no fear asfar as risk taking, Like I had
no problems leaving home with no money, nothing, and I knew that I
was going to make I was goingto be okay. So I've always had
that inner confidence to be a risktaker, and I think that you give
that to people at your show.So I've seen several young men come up
(11:13):
to you and first really thank youand tell them that you've changed their life
significantly by simple words that you've said. And I know it's fun to get
you a little bit emotional. I'ma really fun entertainer because what I know
is that you have a gift togive the world. And yesterday when I
saw you at the IRMA, everyonein the room cried at least one time
during the show. Everyone in theroom moved their whole body at least one
time in the show. And youwere able to transfer this feeling of freedom,
(11:37):
liberty and sovereignty, the ability tomake your own choices, the ability
to believe in yourself. Absolutely,So I admire you for that and I'm
so grateful that I got to knowyou. Thank you. So, where
can we find you next today?Or at the country club? And why
actually I'm right now. I'm atthe country Club. I go on stage
right after this interview. And thenI just found out that this Thursday,
(11:58):
this coming Thursday, I'm doing somethingat the IRMA again for a rodeo or
or a yeah, and it's afamous horsale. Okay, shut down the
street and they put the auction ringin the middle of the street and of
camera crews actually coming and they're goingto film the whole thing. But they've
I've been coming since I was threeyears old. Oh okay, and it's
(12:18):
something that they do every single year, so I know that it's t J.
Clark is putting it on the shirtto Jake and k Clark's usually and
they've transferred it to their son, which is super exciting. So they'll be
beautiful horses out there. Austin isgoing to be doing live art on the
porch and I know you're going tobe singing and it's going to be so
fun. That is going to bean incredible event. Yeah, I'm excited
to be a part of the wholecommunity. And I found my tribe.
