(00:27):
we explore the stories of the pastand present. The Cody Wyoming Podcast is
your guide to all things that makeCody, Wyoming truly special. And now
here's your host, Ashley Oakley.Hey, it's Ashley Oakley, Annie Oakley's
long lost sister, and I amlive on the Cody Wyoming Podcast. I've
been shopping up and down Main Streetand there is this one store that I

(00:49):
have to tell you about. SoI found the owner, Courtney, and
she's here with me today. It'scalled the Village Shop, and I'm so
excited. Welcome Courtney, Thank youfor having me. You're welcome. So
how long has the store been inbusiness? So the store was around around
nineteen fifty. There was a ladywho owned it and then she sold it
to a friend of hers and thenmy grandma bought it from her in nineteen

(01:12):
eighty eight and she has owned itever since. My aunt took over in
twenty fifteen, and I took overin twenty twenty. Okay, that's amazing.
Actually that's in twenty one. That'sunheard of anymore. Most people have
let the stores go out of theirlineage. First of all. Yeah,
I've closed the stores across the wholeentire nation, so I do know.

(01:33):
And that's interesting to think that youSo you're the general fourth generation, third
generation. They actually had similar names, so a lot of people around Cody
get confused that maybe we're all related. But yeah, so a third generation
of my family since nineteen eighty eight. Awesome, And tell me what you
sell here? What's your primary Sowe sell a lot of business casual We

(01:57):
have se Lauder cosmetics, and wedo a lot of designer fragrances as well
as casual in business wear, solots of prom formals and tuxedos. So
we really do call ourselves the littlethe little Store of Cody that has a
little bit of everything, including afew things for men and mostly women.

(02:19):
And you have some baby stuff too, I d see. Yeah, so
that came in New twenty twenty one. That fall after picture day, my
son's class had three kids wearing thesame Walmart shirt, and I said,
that's it. Never again. You'relike, I will dress yeah so well,
and he wasn't the one in thematching shirts. So it just ended

(02:39):
up being something that I thought weneed somewhere that isn't ranchy for us who
don't own cattle or live on aranch. But we don't necessarily want the
animated Walmart teas either, So that'swhy we started carrying super Cool. Yeah,
I see that you cater to alot of women who are going to
have a baby as well, likethey came and given her ras. You

(03:00):
can get anything that has to dowith maternity. Also Lingerie if you're listening
out there and you're like on abecause a lot of people listen to this
are traveling and they find the podcastand then this shop reminds me of my
favorite grandma's shop that existed back innineteen fifties that you don't see anywhere else,
So it's like a It definitely isa treasure hunt, and it's like
a stagecoach stop. It's where youwould get like I wish you had Boostieri's

(03:23):
right, but it reminds me ofthat. You do, Oh you do
have bost We do, yeah, yeah, So we call it the little
department Store because we do. Wehave everything from lingerating or basics, underwear,
bras Boustier's panty hose, which isalmost a gone thing, but we
sell so many. Is still thentwo shoes and sandals? Do you sell

(03:44):
a year? That's wild, likeat least one hundred pairs, which is
wild because I always thought this isnot even a thing anymore. Nobody wears
these, you know. You seea lot of bankers and businesswomen who just
throw on jeans and they look great. But not everybody is wearing pantyhose underneath
their clothes anymore. But we stillsell quite a few. That's really interesting.

(04:06):
Prom dresses, correct, So wedo prom. So we do tuxedos
with the boys rent or buy,and then the girls can get their dresses
here, which we only order oneperse style per color, so that nobody
at prom is ever wearing your samedress, and especially not from us.
We keep jock of every girl whobuys a dress, what size and color

(04:28):
and what brand it is, sothat if she is going to pal in
Cody's. Then we make sure nobodyin pal has anything similar to Oh,
that's so nice of you. Ifyour friend you're like helping the girls look
all different and feel good. Yes, And I think that's really why you
do it. So why do youlove what you do? So? I
grew up in this store, runningaround as a kid. My grandma took
over in nineteen eighty eight and Iwas born in ninety one, so my

(04:49):
crib was actually upstairs of our store. My mom just had a baby monitor
and would come up if she heardus cry. My brother's eighteen months older
than I am, so we justgrew up in this store. So actually,
I feel like this is my firstreal home. I spend every sixth
day from school here and every weekend. And we're actually the basement now,

(05:11):
which is probably where you spend alot of time as a kid. Yeah,
did you spend a lot of timedown here? It's really cool.
These are neat old buildings. Soif you're coming to Cody, you have
to stop here. Tell me howyou get to the store if you're coming
from the park. So if you'recoming from the park and you've passed the
Chamber of Commerce and the museum. We're downtown, just right on the corner
of twelve and thirteenth Street, rightoff of Sheridan And what's your address,

(05:33):
twelve eighty four Sheridan Avenue. Okay, perfect, we'll put that in the
show notes. You can link itto your website, which is the Village
Shop dot org. Okay, perfect, the Village Shop and it's ppe yep,
pbe. So it's just the originalshop. It's like the professional way
of spelling shop. And it waslike that in the nineteen fifties as well,

(05:53):
which we have the old nineteen fiftiesmetal siding that was on the original
building we had founded in the basementwhen I took over in twenty twenty one
and I took it home and spraypainted it. My husband actually hung it
inside of our store since they wouldnot let it put it on the outside.
Oh. So it was like no, or somebody was like yeah,

(06:14):
city council. I was like,no, not Earth. It was probably
the firehousing owner. Yeah, soit used to be the glass led light
bulbs, and so now I'm thinkingof just running the led lights on the
inside, so it would be funon the inside of the building. Yeah.
Sure, And it's definitely window shoppingin Cody, Wyoming. I am
going to France soon and I lovegoing overseas because there's a different kind of

(06:36):
shopping that exists, and it doesexist in Cody. It's very charming,
very boutiqueish. Everybody knows everybody andCourtney has the most fantastic shop ever.
So if you're listening to this, make sure you visit the village shop when
you come. This weekend is thefamous horse sale. Yes, so this
weekend is the horse sale. TheIRMA puts it on right outside the steps

(06:59):
of the deck and the porch andyou can eat lunch at the IRMA watch
the horse sale. Last year theone of the highest bidding horses were around
one hundred and twelve thousand, andeverybody just has such a fun time.
But I know those kids need abreak every now and then. So this
year is the fourth annual horse anda Round event for children and we offer

(07:19):
that as business owners in the communityfor the kids and the families to come
down, play bingo, play games, win prizes, and then when they're
all finished, they turn in theirbingo card to the Chamber of Commerce downtown
in the log cabin across from themuseum and then they have chances to win
cool prizes, like we have abike that was donated from Mountain Girl in

(07:43):
the village shop, a boy anda girl bike. There's a coloring tablet,
some stuffed animals, lots of funlittle Lego pieces that you can win
for finishing your bingo bored cool.Yeah, so a fun game and it's
definitely a family adventure. If you'venever seen a horse sale before, this
is the time to come. Theyhave Mother's Day horsedale every single year,
so if you catch this episode afterMother's Day, don't worry. Next Mother's
