Ashley Oakley is the host of the Cody Wyoming podcast, catching up with Wendy from the Dollar Tree on the weekly Catching Up with Cody!

Wendy informs Ashley that the park is opening Friday morning, and people are already lining up to try to see the baby grizzly bears. Wendy also mentions that Raspberry and Jam will be easy to spot.

This conversation serves as a reminder that Cody Wyoming is a great place to live in the west, and an exciting place to visit. It offers a variety of attractions, such as the park, and bears to view. Additionally, the Dollar Tree is offering a pancake breakfast may 5&6.

This conversation is about the bears of Cody, Wyoming. The speaker has lived there for over 50 years, and knows of at least six bears in the area. These include Raspberry, Jam and Snow on the east side, and two bores towards the north central. 399, who has been followed closely on social media, has recently emerged from her den. There is a warning to not camp at Three Mile Campground, as it is where bad bears are often dropped off.

The speaker then talks about the gunfight that takes place in Cody every year, where the street is shut down and people are shot on purpose. The Cody Gunfight is a popular melodrama entertainment that happens in Cody, Wyoming every night from June to October. It is a great way to contribute to local charities as those who buy chairs to sit in for the show have their money go to a local charity chosen by the play actors. Those who don't buy chairs can still watch the show for free. The play actors do not actually shoot anyone and the whole event is a fake gunfight. Additionally, the play actors occasionally ask those who are standing around to join the play.

There is also a firearms experience in Cody, Wyoming, where one can shoot historical firearms such as a Gatling gun. There is also axe throwing for those who want to take out their frustrations. Seating for the Cody Gunfight starts at 5:30 PM and the show starts at 6:30 PM. This conversation takes place between two people discussing the best things to do in Cody, Wyoming.

Wendy suggests that any trip to Cody should include a visit to the museum, which is the second largest in the United States. They also suggest attending the rodeo, which starts on June 1, and the Cody Cattle Company, which offers a dinner show with western music spanning multiple genres. They also suggest joining in on the Calf Scramble, which is free for children twelve and under, and watching the 4th of July parade, which last year was led by Rip from Yellowstone TV!

your guide to all things that makeCody, Wyoming truly special. And now
here's your host, Ashley Oakley.Hey, it's Ashley at the Cody Wyoming
Podcast and we are catching up withCody and Wendy is here again today from
the Dollar Tree. Hi, Wendy, how's it gone. How are you

(00:49):
today? I'm so excited that you'reback with us. Yes, Saturday,
you're flipping pancakes Saturday. We areflipping pancakes from eight and Friday from age
to eleven morning. And the bigday is Friday. The park opens Friday.
Park opens at eight am Friday. There are people already getting in line.
Oh, oh my gosh. Okay, so people already getting in line.

(01:11):
Yeah, there are people up atPahaska right now. They're just sleeping
on the side of the road intheir cars. Heck yeah, because they
want to see the baby buffalow orwhat they want to see. Grizzlies.
Oh cute. There have been grizzliesspotted, so everybody's lining up to see
them. Okay, So if you'recoming to Yellowstone and you want to see
the grizzlies, you better get herequick or they're going to be hiding because
all the tourists are going to runaway. Well, Raspberry and Jam will

(01:34):
be easy to see. Yeah. How many bears do you know about?
I know of at least six.Okay, Raspberry and Jam. Raspberry,
Jam and Snow are on the eastside, and then there's two boars right
towards the north central as you goup from Fishing Bridge towards Canyon. Yeah,
and three ninety nine. He hasemerged from her Dan if you're endy
nine. With all the cubs thatshe's had over the years, we don't

(01:56):
know how if she's had cub jep, but she has been spotted emerging from
her That's so exciting. I followedher on Facebook and social media for so
long it's like it's the most it'sso iconic. I know, it's fun
to have that. A lot ofpeople don't like the bears around here because
they kind of dropped bad bears offthe Heart Mountain, right, they dropped
bad bears off at three Mile Campground, which is three miles down from Yellowstone

(02:20):
Park. Don't camp at three MileCampground. Oh good advice. Look,
see, if you listen to theCody Wyoming podcast, you won't get eaten
by a bear or attack that one. Hey. Great, And there's already
been one bear shot um on thenorth wark up by three Mile Campground because
somebody mistaken we assumed it was ablack bear. Oh this black bear season.
Oh no, so watch out forbears. Yeah, that's not a

(02:44):
good This is a ton of yearwatch out for bears. Okay, so
we're watching out for bears. Iknow that you lived here. You've looked
here for fifty years, right, fifty plus years. Fifty plus years.
And every year in Cody they havea gunfight. Oh and it's in the
street. They shut the street downat now and tell me about the gunfight.
Well, we shoot people on purpose, and Cody, unlike Chicago,

(03:05):
in La, we actually shut thestreet down and shoot people on purpose.
Every night. It starts the firstpart of June, depending on the weather,
if it's going to be the firstof June, the last week of
May. It all depends on theweather because the play actors do not want
to lay in the street yet ifit's snowing on them, right, and
it'll go through October. It isa great by entertainment. You can either

(03:30):
fit and if you buy a chairto sit in for the show, it
actually goes to a local charity thatthey choose every year, so you're actually
contributing to a local charity if youbuy it, or you can stand there
and watch it totally for free. And it's every night, every night.
I remember I came here rerobably tenor fifteen years ago, and they asked

(03:51):
me to be in it during themiddle of the thing. So apparently they
enroll people that are standing there tobe in there. Oh yeah, and
no, we don't shoot anyone. No one actual dies. It's all fake
yake guns. But that's amazing. So you were involved in it though as
a child or as an adult. We were in our thirties, so I
would say young adult because well I'molder than that now, and we play

(04:15):
acted in it when it was morebased on actual historical events than the melodrama
that it is now. It's morea fun melodrama now. We had it
more back when the group that Iwas with did it. We based it
on local events, like the onesingle time that a banking Cody got robbed
in nineteen oh one, where theShanda name Er Jewelry story is now,

(04:40):
Wow, the bank got robbed. They chased the robbers to Red Lodge where
the Bank of Red Lodge was andis now an art gallery, and we
cornered him in there. And JeremiahJohnson that you hear about was the sheriff
of Red Lodge and he single handedlyapprehended the criminals. Oh my gosh,
that's a great story. You werehere for that, well not nineteen oh

(05:03):
one, but it felt like it. You have a good doctor, you're
three thousand years odow. That's something. So that's fun. So if you
want to go to the gun shootout, what do they call it now,
Cody gunfight is a melodrama that isevery single night except Sundays because they have
to wrest their throats sometime and nobodyactually gets hurt. And they actually tell

(05:27):
people about guns safety, so you'renot worrying about your child if you live
in the big city, your childpicking up a gun, going oh,
I'm going to be a Cody gunfighter and do this. No, they
tell kids how to handle guns ifyou see one on the sidewalk, or
you see one, what not todo, so you're actually going to learn
something when you go there. Ilove that firearms safety than Cody, Wyoming.

(05:50):
I know, they have a bigfirearms building here where you can go
shoot. We have the firearms experience, and honestly, who doesn't want to
shoot a gatling gun? Yeah,I mean you can shoot a gat one
gun and you can shoot any kindof gun they have there. Most of
them are historical guns. And waitthere's more. We have axe throwing.

(06:15):
Oh wow, so that's even morefun. Yeah, you can take out
all your frustration and still be nice. Lease have a room. We know
I'll break everything. Room. I'mgonna go without because I haven't. I
have not actually thrown axes, buta lot of people go do it and
have such a good time. Idon't think you have that much aggression.
I think you're a really nice.First thing to get my aggressions out.

(06:39):
Oh my gosh, Wendy, Ilove you. Okay. So, if
you're listening to this podcast and youwant to go to the gun fight,
that's at night. It starts around, it starts seating starts at five thirty
six. If you want to geta good spot, be there at five
thirty six. Issues, because thegun fight actually starts right at six thirty

(07:00):
Okay, awesome. So and thenit goes for about an hour, half
an hour, half an hour, half an hour, and they starts a
gunfight with Buffalo Bill's shotgun that heopened all of his shows with. It
is fired straight into the air.You can hear it everywhere and Cody.
Cody's one of the few towns inthe world that if you hear gunfire,
people run towards it. Yeah,it's true. We shoot people for fun

(07:20):
here. Okay, I love this. What would you suggest if someone has
never been to Cody, Wyoming andthey're coming here for the first time,
what are the three things that theymust do? Okay, come after the
first of June, because you wantto go to the museum, and that's
a two day past second largest museumin the United States. You're gonna want

(07:44):
to go to the rodeo. Itstarts June first. It is every night,
starts at eight o'clock. And it'snot just fun for adults. It's
not just the rodeo events you seeon television. It is junior steer writing,
which is generally the kids are betweenthe ages of five and ten.

(08:05):
You can join from the crowd, right. The fun one is you can
join from the crowd is the CalfScramble. Every child twelve and under can
join the Calf Scramble totally for free, and you don't have to be a
kid to have fun at that. That is the most fun event to watch
all night long because you're hanging offof your seat or off of the fence,

(08:28):
laughing your tail off, watching hundredsof children try to chase two calves,
and well, those poor two littlecalves are overwhelmed when they open the
gate and they see these thousands ofchildren coming to chase them. I've seen
it before. It's freely entertaining.Okay, So come after the first of
June, go to the rodeo,go to the museum by the museum,

(08:48):
and go to Cody Cattle Company.Cody Cattle Company is great Pendley and Pendley
and the Three ce Wranglers performing. It is a dinner show. Not only
do you get dinner you come in, you get a buffet dinner which is

(09:09):
a chuck Wagon style with beef orchicken, you know, all the fixings,
and to die for chocolate brownies,to die for. You will go
back for seconds and fifths for theyto die for chocolate brownies. Then they
perform and it is a full blownWestern music performance and it covers all genres

(09:33):
of Western music clear back from thenineteen twenties clear through modern day. The
best part is it's right next doorto the Cody Knight Rodeo. You can
park it's a Cody Cattle Company, walk over the Cody Night Rodeo. You
don't even have to worry about thecrowds getting out of the rodeo because you're
gonna walk back over to the CodyCattle Company and get right back on the

(09:54):
road. That's a great idea. What time does the show start? Cody
Cattle Company dinner starts at five thirty, They start serving dinner at five thirty.
There at five, okay, Andwhat time does the rodeo start?
Eight? Eight? Okay? Soyou can go to all of it.
You can do museums, the wholeGoody Cattle Company, and rodeo in one
day exactly. Well that would bea lot though. And then fourth at
July weekend. Well, well, last year you had Rip as your Yes

(10:20):
parade leader. We have had wehad John Wayne, who's this year.
You know, Wendy should be theleader. He is not going to be
a ride in the parade. AndWendy does not do parades anymore. Wendy
flips fancakes on Saturday. Phlips pancakeson Fridays and Saturday, Friday and Saturday.
This week, Oh heck, yeah, okay, I'm excited, Okay,

(10:41):
good advice. So I'm excited becausethere's a horse sale coming up next
weekend. Yes, that's the horseIt's been going on for years at this
point. Best to the Rockies horsesale. Yeah, and so what happens
They closed down the street, literallyclosed down the street where they have the
gun fights. We have a horsesale in the middle of town. No
other town in the United States closesdowntown. You have a horse sale in

(11:05):
the middle of town. Yeah, and well you can go for the horse
sale. To buy a horse. You go to horse sale to sell a
horse. You can go just tosee all the horses before the sale.
After the sale, they're on thestreet or in the ring or the best
part you can go watch it andhave drinks outside of the arma because they're

(11:26):
serving drinks on the porch. That'sperfect. And I heard Austin Ratslaff is
doing live art on the porch anddrawing horses every year, which will be
super cool. I love the arthere in Cody. There's so much art.
We have a huge art scene.Yeah, and a huge art There's
an older crowd here that they doart. They're actively involved in doing art
every single day. We were actuallywhere the Cody Cancer Center is now was

(11:48):
actually an art commune in the nineteentwenties and thirties. Jackson Pollock was actually
born in Cody, Wyoming. Ohwow, so in the art commune which
is where the Cody Cancer Center isnow. That's really interesting. That's a
really powerful man. Yeah, ohI never know these things. Okay,

(12:09):
So when men might be little butwe're mighty, you are mighty. It's
This is one of the most Ithink nostalgic, iconic towns. It was
voted best place to live. Yes, my best of the West magazine and
True West magazine and USA Today.Well, so we don't. I mean,
I don't know. Some of thelocals are like sad because they don't
want it to turn into Jackson. But I really believe that this town attracts

(12:31):
people with a sense of freedom,a sense of adventure, and a sense
of perseverance and a sense of kindof cut off from the world. I
would I would say, everyone thatI've met here, none of them say
I love TV and watch it regularly. Most of them say I don't own
a TV, and I usually doart. I have a TV so I
can watch sports in the falling winter, okay because it's really cold, because
well I like football and hockey.However, I don't think I even turn

(12:56):
it on in the summertime. Yeah, because there's just such an adventure and
a sense of you can do anything. We have wildlife in town. If
you sit and watch the wildlife intown, you will notice that the deer
actually obey the traffic lights. Isaw this. It is the weirdest thing.
They literally go across the sidewalk andobey the traffic lights. I was
like, are they talks like, what is they actually obey the traffic lights

(13:18):
and the Chinese restaurants. It's righton Main Street. You can watch this
from their picture window. They're actuallyyou can actually just sit there and watch
the deer outside window and go,that didn't just happen. So you'll go
down to another store and watch. And they're doing it there too. The
deer walk around town like it's theirown personal playground. Yeah, that's because

(13:39):
it is. So if you're listeningto this and you are wondering, gosh,
is there anywhere left in the worldthat is free and that feels like
freedom and liberty and the actual essenceof the wild West? Cody Wyoming,
is it. There's still a littlebit of Mayberry in Cody, Wyoming.
Yeah, there is still a lotof Mayberry. Yeah, people, what
do you mean by that? Becausea younger generation will understand most people don't

(14:01):
lock their doors. Most people leavetheir windows open at night. You don't
lock your windows. You don't havea security system because nobody's going to bother
you. Well as you have guns, well that too, and you know
you're gonna die, well that too. But I mean, and most of
us used to. We don't anymorebecause well, there has been cars theft,

(14:24):
but most of us used to leaveour keys in our ignition, so
we didn't lose our car keys.Yeah, I've seen this right still,
some of the older people they leavetheir keys in their car. I take
one of the ladies and get hersome groceries, and she leaves the keys
in the car, and it's normal. Yeah. Around here, that's normal.
Yeah, and most cities that isnot normal. But around here that's

(14:45):
normal. Or if you live ina small you know we live up by
a cul de sac. We don't. We don't live in the cul de
sac, but we live inside acul de sac. Somedays you'll walk out
your car and find somebody sitting inyour pastorcity. This has happened more than
once. It's happened for years, because if there's an older person, Oh,

(15:07):
they'll just come sit in your carand wait for you, not call
you, not knock on your door, anything, just from sit in your
car. You go out to getin your car and they say, would
you give me a ride? Account, So you just give people ride to
wherever they want to go. That'sprobably how they did it in the old
days. I mean, how elsewould you get a hold of somebody?
We all do, and we're soused to what's it. It's like,
Oh, somebody in the car.Oh no, okay, Oh, somebody's

(15:31):
in the car. I guess theyneed to ride. Well, maybe wants
to go somewhere. And nobody listeningto this is going to believe you.
But I believe you because I knowthat it happens here, Cody Y.
Weird things happen here. Well, weird things to the rest of the world,
they're normal to Cody. It isnormal to Codey. There is a
sense of sovereignty here and freedom andan adventure and curiosity that lends itself to

(15:52):
being really open to figuring out allsorts of people. And if there's someone
in your car, they probably needto ride to town. Did you need
grocery store? So cute? Well, thanks Mondy for being on today.
And make sure if you're coming toCody this weekend you go see Wendy on
Friday and Saturday. She's flipping pancakesat the Dollar Tree. And your only
admission, do you buy pancakes. You have to give me your receipt.

(16:12):
Oh, yeah, that's it.You have to give me your receipt.
You don't have to give me anythingelse. There a little piece of paper
that says I've been in the DollarTree. Awesome, you've bought something from
the dollar Tree. You can getfree pancakes. This is Ashley was catching
up with Cody. Thanks Mondy forbeing on today. Thank you, You're
welcome. Did you want to camp? Yes, and we'll come back to
